Book Description
Patriotism or practical joke?
Harrison, NH -- Ninth-grade student Philip Malloy was suspended from school for singing along to The Star-Spangled Banner in his homeroom, causing what his teacher, Margaret Narwin, called "a disturbance." But was he standing up for his patriotic ideals, only to be squelched by the school system? Was Ms. Narwin simply trying to be a good teacher? Or could it all be just a misunderstanding gone bad -- very bad? What is the truth here? Can it ever be known?
Heroism, hoax, or mistake, what happened at Harrison High changes everything for everyone in ways no one -- least of all Philip -- could have ever predicted.

How the media frenzy can interfere with the truth.......2007-06-18
Nothing but the Truth provides an interesting perspective on high school and the media culture that we live in today. As a young adult novel, this book deals with issues that teens can relate to: disenchantment with school, challenging of authority, disconnection with parents, and trying to carve out an identity. Philip has three conflicts in this story: one against Mrs. Narwin, one against the school system that was caused by his behavior, and ultimately with himself. The author provides a realistic portrait of a teenage boy. However, readers are not given any true insight as to why Philip behaves as he does. Suggestions for the behavior are made, but never explored. The reader never can understand how and if Philip has changed because of this incident. The other characters are given superficial development. They are mainly used as foils to interact with the main character. The actions and events are believable given today's media culture. The readers mainly see the story through Philip's eyes although the school administration and Mrs. Narwin do have some input. From Philip's viewpoint, the story is skewed in his favor. A strength of this novel is the issues that it raises. The media culture, challenging authority, and teenage angst all are presented in a fashion that would appeal to a teenage audience. This is an excellent resource for high school teachers. The realism of the novel could provide lively discussions for high school students. The issues that the story raises might make for some lively debates.
A waste of time..........2007-06-01
Okay this book was REALLY BORING! It had an ok plot when we read the back of the book but when we started to read it it was not written in a way that was interesting to us. Avi has some good books but this was not one of his better ones. Miss. Narwin sent to many letters to her sister, and there was barely (if not no) any reason for her to write to her sister. The memos were boring and we think Avi could have told us the information in a different way. Really bad.
Disturbing the Peace.......2007-03-28
I recommend this book for kids who like books that never get boring. I think Avi is a great author and I am glad that the book won the Newbery Medal. The book was really easy to read and not hard to understand. I like imagining the real thing, like what he character looks like. I learned that you can get suspended for little things! I like how the book had the names of who is talking before the character actually talks. Almost throughout the whole book I found many interesting surprises. As one can see Nothing but the Truth by Avi is a great book to read and enjoy by the fire.
Nothing but the Truth.......2007-03-23
Nothing but the Truth is a really great book. It is buy an author named Avi. This book is about a middle school kid name Phillip. Phillip got suspended because he was singing the national anthem in the morning. So the teacher got mad at Phillip and wrote him up. The characters are: Phillip, mom, dad, Mrs.Nawrin, principal, and Phillip friend named Jake. This book was probably written for anybody. There are no certain ages. This book could be for males and females.
The whole book was good. It was also conversably. I liked this book because it had to deal with school relationship. I didn't dislike the book because the setting was great. The characters played their role great. Everything was great. Some parts took place in his home with his parents. Some parts took place at school in Mrs.Nawrin room. It also took place in the principal office.
I liked this book a lot. The reason why I liked this book because it was enjoyable. I would recommend this book to anybody who like long and awesome books
Track Tryouts.......2007-03-15
My review is about Philip Malloy who wanted to try out for the track team. He wanted to try out because he was a very fast runner, and the coach and other students thought he could help them win a championship. But it turned out that he could not try out because he was failing in his English class. He soon got in trouble for humming in the classroom. The school was doing the National Athem and philip began humming. He eventually was kick out of the classroom. Right now the Princpal is talking about suspending Philip and Jennifer is wondering why.
They all figure it was a silly rule that you can not sing when The Star Spangled Banner was playing, it's a sign of disrespect. Philip was eventually transferred to a different homeroom. He was transfered from Mrs. Narwin class to Mr. Lunser class but he was suspended for 2 days for not apologizing to Mrs.Narwin. This situation became so popular that Jennifer decide to plublish it in the newspaper. Jennifer was an Education Reporter. This situation had the whole town talking and seems that Philip was getting alot of attention.Philip was getting so much attention and the coach did not want him to try out anymore because he wasn't a team player and Philip was upset. He truly wanted to be on the track team but the coach told him maybe next year. Philip decide that he did not want to go back to that school anymore and he tansfered to Washington Academy from Harrison High. It was also time for the school budget at Harrison High and everyone was hoping it would pass. When that day came they were defeated. Philip went to his new school and when he meet his new teacher , they were preparing to sing the national athem and Philip started to cry. He was asked why and he said he did not know the words....

Book Description
This isn't just "someone's opinion"...It's the first, definitive, evidence-based guide to effective management. In The Truth About Managing People...and Nothing but the Truth, Robbins delivers principles you can rely on throughout your entire management career--regardless of your organization, role or title. This is a management book that cuts through the soft opinion and conjecture books that have dominated the business shelves in recent years and shows what management researchers know actually works, or doesn't work, when it comes to managing people.
Drawing on the author's 30+ years of research and textbook writing experience, Robbins has distilled the results of thousands of research studies on human behavior into over 60 proven "truths" that can transform how you manage people--and the results that are achieved. The author provides guidance to you organized around key, human-behavior-related problemareas that managers face (hiring, motivation, leadership, communication, team building, conflict management, job design, evaluating performance and coping with change), along with guidance to help you apply the information and improve your managerial effectiveness.

Simply the truth.......2007-08-16
This book is good! I recommend it to all managers and supervisors. it's worth the time to read.

Truthfully, This Book Will Help You Do More Than Just "Manage".......2007-08-15
Robbins's book is a pleasure to read. He presents multiple topics in a short, easily digestible modular format and then allows you to learn more by providing you with references that go into much further detail. Let's face it - most management books are worse than worthless and are either New Age fluff or bluster and swagger. Robbins instead avoids the know-it-all approach by supporting each of his 'truths' with empirical evidence from sociology, organizational psychology, assertiveness training, and literature on leadership and group dynamics.
Unless you already have a Ph.D in Social Psychology, an MBA, and 10 years' worth of corporate experience, you will learn something new with this book. You'll do more than just 'manage' - you will succeed. Use this book as a springboard and a guide, as Robbins suggests, and you will almost certainly improve your workplace performance.
Good primer on managing.......2007-06-30
This book provides some basic information on how to manage and interact overall with people in the work place. It has helpful refresher information on group dynamics and motivation. The book is organized in 63 numbered "truths" that I thought were interesting and insightful. Each "truth" was about a page or two, so there wasn't as much detailed info on how to handle all of the situations discussed.
Some Good Some Bad.......2006-07-09
This is a pretty good book for learning for things to look out for when managing people, but not being pro-Christian it does have some seemingly immoral suggestions, one for example is to make people dependant on you by doing things as extreme as destroying instruction booklets on how to do certain things at work, so that for someone to learn what to do they must go to you.
There is also the strange advice, "Truth 19", to not criticize the employees when they mess up but rather their messed up behavior (which seems to have something to do with the "do not judge" concept, which is often taken out of context in the Bible.) Ironically on the same page the author says to say something like this to the employee, "Bob, I'm concerned with your attitude toward your work. You were a half hour late...". Notice how the criticizing is on Bob, not his behavior?
I don't recommend this book for a newbie Christian who is a manager or who wants to be one, but for one who is solidy grounded in the Bible I wouldn't mind giving this too them. I might point out it isn't perfect in a note or something however, like the don't criticize the person contradiction, so that they don't think you're endorsing the whole book.
A summary of diverse aspects of management thought.......2005-08-03
Mr Robbins' best-selling book is packed with briefs on effective management thinking and examples on diverse topics. An excellent, useful, and well-organized book comprised of 63 sound nuggets of management wisdom collected from many credible sources. The 10 categories make it easy to locate an item of particular interest. The small easy-to-digest `truths' make it easy to read a different truth each morning or to devour the book in one longer sitting. Each `truth' is also well documented if you'd like to explore the item in more depth. This book makes a great refresher, introduction, or point of embarkment on further research.

Amazon.com Reviews
Fans of John Lescroart's series hero Dismas Hardy, the thoughtful and likable San Francisco lawyer, will welcome this meditation on marriage served up as a murder mystery. In previous outings, Hardy has been a cop, a bartender, and even an assistant prosecutor, so he knows that, "Sometimes the whole truth is the last thing you want to hear." But then his wife Frannie goes to jail for refusing to tell what she knows about the husband of a murdered environmental activist. The Hardy's children are classmates of the victim's youngsters, and Dismas must confront the secrets in his own relationship that have been concealed by the all-too-familiar pressures of trying to balance work and love in the modern family. The plot, which involves oil, gas, ethanol, and gubernatorial politics, doesn't take center stage in this carefully written and deeply compelling novel; the real action is the series of revelations about the crime in question, which uncover the more interesting story of how even a good marriage can deteriorate despite--or perhaps because of--the daily work of trying to keep it going. Lescroart is in Scott Turow territory here, and he explores and conquers it with the same keen talent for describing the distance between private life and public trust. Nothing But the Truth represents a major step forward for Lescroart, who expands the mystery genre with every Dismas Hardy outing. --Jane Adams

It has: Frannie Hardy is in jail. Called before the grand jury in a murder investigation, she refused to reveal a secret entrusted to her by a man whose children attend the same school as hers, a friend who is accused of killing his wife. But now he has disappeared. Hardy knows there's only one way to get Frannie out of jail: clear her friend of murder. That is, if he can be found. As he moves through a labyrinthine world of big business and San Francisco politics, looking for a man he half hopes never to find, a furious and frustrated Hardy is struggling to understand why his impeccably faithful wife is being so loyal to another man. With an unparalleled ability to illuminate the complexities of relationships while weaving a story of breathtaking suspense, Lescroart has never been in finer form. And
Nothing But the Truth is his finest hour.

A Perfect Whodunit.......2006-06-02
Lescroart is a master of the complicated criminal novel plot. Furthermore, he keeps the story under control, not letting it spin off into unbelievability or triteness as so many other writers do. Lescroart is a true master of the genre: Nobody does it better. His characters are stunningly believable, his courtroom dialog is sharply authentic, but most of all, his intricate plots are masterpieces. And just when you think you've identified the villain (after changing your mind about five times) Lescroart pulls the rug out from under you and you find it was the guy standing quietly in the back behind the scenery. When completing a Lescroart novel, I always have a strong feeling of satisfaction, knowing that I had just completed a good read and had not wasted my time. Many authors fail to deliver, but Lescroart bats 1.000 in my book, which translates in this case to five stars.
Like Sitting in the Dentist Chair.......2004-09-05
I've been a fan of Lescroats for a few years now. I really did enjoy reading works like The First Law and The Hearing. However,I just couldn't get excited about this work. The plot was a bit unrealistic while a great chunk of the novel was void of intense dialogue and a few action scenes for good measure. Lescroats disappointed me in this one. Fortunately, I bought this book at a used book sale for a buck thirty and do not feel too cheated.
Best Book EVER!!!!!!(Holes).......2003-04-03

This book is about a 14 year old boy named Philip Malloy. He goes to Harrison high in new Hampshire.Philip is in the 9th grade when
he starts to be disrespectful. He tells a lie and it turns in to a big mess.I like this book and I think if you read it,you will
like it too.
A really super story!.......2002-10-17
Nothing but the Truth is the first John T. Lescroart novel I've read, but it certainly won't be my last!! I will definitely explore the rest of the Dismas Hardy series, and go from there.
In this book, Hardy is an attorney whose wife somehow gets "involved" in a murder investigation of their children's classmate's mother. In order to clear her name, as it were, Hardy works with a friend in Homicide and undertakes his own probing, and as it turns out, dangerous, investigation of the murder.
The book is a compelling read from page one. Although I freely admit I'm not the best at guessing "who done it", the twists and turns the investigation takes really blew my mind. The clues were there, but there was no way I could put it all together. I guess that's why I'm a reader and not a crime investigator ;)
I really can't recommend this book highly enough. I'm certainly looking forward to reading more of Mr. Lescroart's writing. Hopefully, you will too :D

What is unusual about The Truth about Managing Your Career...And Nothing but the Truth is that readers at different levels in their careers will find this book useful. Someone graduating from school or someone aiming at the executive suite will benefit from reading it.
The underlying messages in the book are profound yet simple ways to develop the most effective mindset, behaviors and approaches to use in the workplace. The 60 chapters are truths which help you excel in your current job as well as pave the way to the next level in your career. One of the most practical aspects of this book is the way it unveils the causes and reasons for mistakes you have made without being aware of them until later when you are puzzled. Judaism is in danger of compromising the core values which have made this religion so resilient and enduring through the millenniums, according to author and NPR commentator Douglas Rushkoff. The strength and longevity of Judaism lies in its original valuesiconoclasm, media literacy, its ability to encourage inquiry instead of obedience. But Rushkoff argues that these values have become dangerously compromised to the point where Judaism is now more concerned with adherence to a righteous path and unquestioning assimilation. Unless the Jewish community restores its emphasis on "inquiry over certainty and fluidity over sanctity," he believes it will be impossible to reach the numerous disaffected Jews who are struggling with the intense and sometimes terrifying challenges of modern life.
As a media watchdog and social commentator, Rushkoff (Coercion: Why We Listen to What They Say) is especially attuned to the negative affects of globalization and media technologies. One of his main gripes is that Judaism is starting to function more like a global corporation. For instance, instead of challenging the market culture's influence over children, "Jewish outreach groups are hiring trend watchers to help them market Judaism to younger audiences," he writes. The good news, notes Rushkoff, is that Judaism also has a "Renaissance Tradition," in which it has faced similar crises in the past and successfully reorganized itself according to its original tenets. He sees the potential for such a Renaissance now, and even offers ideas on how this could come about. With its inflammatory premise and hard hitting message, this book is destined to stir enormous controversy and, ironically, a good deal of inquiry and debate within the Jewish community. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Acclaimed writer and thinker Douglas Rushkoff, author of
Ecstasy Club and
Coercion, has written perhaps the most important—and controversial—book on Judaism in a generation. As the religion stands on the brink of becoming irrelevant to the very people who look to it for answers,
Nothing Sacred takes aim at its problems and offers startling and clearheaded solutions based on Judaism’s core values and teachings.
Disaffected by their synagogues’ emphasis on self-preservation and obsession with intermarriage, most Jews looking for an intelligent inquiry into the nature of spirituality have turned elsewhere, or nowhere. Meanwhile, faced with the chaos of modern life, returnees run back to Judaism with a blind and desperate faith and are quickly absorbed by outreach organizations that—in return for money—offer compelling evidence that God exists, that the Jews are, indeed, the Lord’s “chosen people,” and that those who adhere to this righteous path will never have to ask themselves another difficult question again.
Ironically, the texts and practices making up Judaism were designed to avoid just such a scenario. Jewish tradition stresses transparency, open-ended inquiry, assimilation of the foreign, and a commitment to conscious living. Judaism invites inquiry and change. It is an “open source” tradition—one born out of revolution, committed to evolution, and willing to undergo renaissance at a moment’s notice. But, unfortunately, some of the very institutions created to protect the religion and its people are now suffocating them.
If the Jewish tradition is actually one of participation in the greater culture, a willingness to wrestle with sacred beliefs, and a refusal to submit blindly to icons that just don’t make sense to us, then the “lapsed” Jews may truly be our most promising members. Why won’t they engage with the synagogue, and how can they be made to feel more welcome?
Nothing Sacred is a bold and brilliant book, attempting to do nothing less than tear down our often false preconceptions about Judaism and build in their place a religion made relevant for the future.
From the Hardcover edition.

The DeJudaized Jewish Militant.......2007-10-16
Rushkoff is the latest in a ages-old line of Jews who despise Judaism and their Jewish identity, but are still strangely attracted to it even as they try to run away from it. Rushkoff is right when he criticizes the de-Judaized liberal Jewish movements who can't provide any real Jewish content to their followers and yet are constantly exhorting them the remain affiliated, just so the Jewish people can continue to survive, for some reason. This might be called the "come along and survive with us" mentality.
Rushkoff reminds me of the joke that tells of an American Jew who has finally had enough of being different so he goes to the pastor of a church and asks to convert. The pastor teaches him and then baptizes him. The pastor then asks if he would get up in church on Sunday and give a few words to the congregation. The now ex-Jew agrees. Sunday comes along, he puts on his "Sunday finest", and he goes to church. The pastor introduces the new member to the congregation and asks him to come forward and say a few words. The new member gets up, nervously looks around and begins: "Fellow gentiles......".
Rushkoff is the same. He artificially redefines Judaism to make it palatable to his "universalist, progressive, environmentally sensitive" agenda, emptying of its content and leaving a bland pablum of well-meaning sentiments and then he calls this his new, improved "Judaism".
But why call it "Judaism"? Rushkoff himself opposes "tribalism" and "parochialism". Why tie his personal preferences to a Jewish identity? He ends up with the same "come survive with us" emptyness, which he himself decries, because there is nothing unique in his artificially truncated Judaism. WHY BE JEWISH? Judaism DOES require social justice and looks forward to universal peace, but all of this is within the framework of belief in G-d and his laws. History has proven that throwing out belief and G-d's laws ends up meaning the part that Rushkoff likes gets thrown out as well.
We can summarize Rushkoff's confused view of himself and Judaism by the famous comment: Rushkoff believes that the Jews are a divinely chosen people whose mission is to teach the world that there is no deity and the Jews are no different than anyone else.
Nasty and Profane.......2006-08-22
This is a horrible book written from a very nasty point of view. Basically, this is a systematic dismantling of everything sacred about Judaism - to the point where the author actually uses the sacred name of God in the book. Obviously, the author knew that his use of the name of God would deeply insult those devoutly Jewish, and just as obviously, the author did not care if he insults deeply held beliefs.
It's important to understand that this is coming from a man that feels that what is now Israel will soon no longer exist as the Jewish homeland - and he demonstrates absolutely no concern for that, either.
No concern for the basics of the Jewish religion, disdain for the Jewish homeland, and disdain for the future of the Jewish race. Anti-religion, Anti-Judaism, Anti-Israel. There's a word for that.
What was he reading?.......2006-07-18
Mr. Rushkoff...what were you reading? The view you hold of the Scriptures, of Kadosh texts founded on revelation, and study..The Torah--the Navim - the Writings- seems to be another one than we have had as a people for these thousands of years.
I can not recommend this book!
Engaging read, even for the non-theologically inclined........2005-04-29
One of my oldest friends is a practicing Jew, despite being an Atheist. Judaism to him is a set of cultural practices handed down and revered from generation to generation--much like High School football in West Texas. He suggested, very strongly, that I read this book.
I knew I had to read it when I realized that the Amazon reviews of this book primarily boiled down to two types:
"LIES, LIES, LIES. (Even though the only lies I can point out are in intellectual details, not the core substance of his book.)"
"THIS BOOK OPENED MY EYES. I CAN'T BELIEVE A BOOK ON RELIGION IS SUCH A PAGETURNER."
While Rushkoff's work has a few flaws that I noticed, and probably a few more I didn't, this book is a very, very strong critique of not only modern Judaism, but of religious traditionalism in general.
While I disagree somewhat with his state intent and the leap he makes from his critique to get to his conclusion, he writes a very compelling case against what is held as established Jewish tradition. Many of the spears of hypocrisy that people throw at the religious right are melted down and reformulated into bullets which Rushkoff shoots at modern Judaism with alarming ease and accuracy.
His core point is that modern Judaism is in crisis. Essentially, his largest criticism is that Judaism is more about the preservation of traditions and the concept of a "chosen race" than it is about the preservation of faith. It is more about ensuring intermarriage and raising Jewish families than it is about understanding or debating the core precepts of Jewish faith.
While I believe he diverts slightly from what I picked out as his core point, the book is nonetheless an enlightening read from any standpoint of the situation. The book is has funny moments, heavy moments, and is quite the page turner for a non-fiction work. He writes in an engaging, anecdotal style that is clearly intended for a younger, more cosmopolitan audience.
What he presents is not something I can reformulate here, but think of all the books you've read that really angered or enlightened you. Why did they anger you? Why did they enlighten you? If you can see why the books that enlightened you seriously angered others, then you'll understand why this book is very meaningfully powerful and controversial.
Worthless.......2005-03-14
It is ironic, Nothing Sacred : The Truth About Judaism is nothing but lies.
Rushkoff's understanding of Judaism and scripture is hugely limited and flawed. Not sure what his point is, save to say it is quite wron

Simple And Readable.......2007-09-22
Brian Edwards eloquently maintains the thesis of the book, truth, in all the relevant fields pertaining to historical Christianity. He neither seeks to manipulate or detract from the true events as they unfolded.
This epitomizes the book's thread. With equanimity he resolves conflicts and informs the uninformed reader. The scope is all-encompassing, the reading invigorating, and the views biblical.
An effort worthy of those who desire to know and defend the truth of Christianity.
Systematic Theology Clearly Explained.......2006-12-17
Edwards' book is a monument to systematic theology, Biblical hermeneutics & exegesis and Bible scholarship. There are only a few minor problems I have with it, the foremost being that it is so long. Yet, this also allowed Edwards to cover an immense menagerie of topics. The book comes with some significant praises from key apologists, theologians and so forth. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Biblical history or scholarship, or in reading a great overview of systematic theology.

She has presided over some of America's most complex and violent cases ranging from narcotics to sex crimes to headline-making murder and mob trials. Her toughness in court is legendary and she is known for frequently imposing maximum sentences (120 years each for five young drug lords). As a result, she must have round-the-clock security as her life has been marked with repeated threats from criminals she put behind bars. Now, Judge Leslie Crocker Snyder has written a riveting account of her years on the bench taking readers behind the scenes and into a courtroom whose trials and rulings have placed a permanent stamp on our legal system. Her true story will inspire and influence many more.

An Inspirational Woman!.......2003-09-10
This book is more than meets the eye. I found it so intriguing that I read it non-stop over the weekend. Snyder chronicles the steps she took to get to where she is today. Her position of priviledge and honour weren't handed to her on a silver plate. She earned it, with a combination of grace, dignity, intelligence, and tenacity. Given her relatively low salary, especially in comparison to the defense attorneys in private practice, it is a wonder that she continues to work in such a demanding, yet thankless job, especially so when she and her family find their lives constantly threatened by the thugs that she protects society from. It is a gripping tale of how criminals run rampant and destroy the lives of innocent bystanders, and how Snyder does more than her part in ending their tyranny. You might expect a book about law to be dry. Think again! 25 TO LIFE is a gripping outline of Snyder's exciting career. I would compare this woman to Rudolph Guiliani in her leadership abilities. She is a role model to all, especially young women. (It's too bad she practices in NY. We could definately use somebody of her calibre here in Canada, to clean up the urban crime). Great book from a fabulous member of society.
A Bell-Ringer.......2003-01-17
This is such an incredible story, I could not put the book down... how could any one person take on the mob, the druggies, and some of the most vicious murderers ever seen in New York City? And while, much of the time, under death threat to her self and family by these creeps who had been getting away with their murders for years... To label her just a Conservative is ridiculous -- she is also liberal, feminist, family, but above all, AMERICAN. New York City and State, and America, owe her a tremendous debt. However, as I neared the end of her incredible odyssey, I wondered why she did not give a solution for the overall "War on Drugs," obviously a losing proposition. But she does! There are hidden powers in high places that should be doing everything possible to save America from this Drug Hell that has engulfed the nation. Time to wake up, folks...
not exactly enlightening.......2002-12-29
The best biographies (and autobiographies) are those that do more than catalog their subjects' achievements -- they chronicle some inner struggle that makes the story interesting on a human level. Reading this book, you wonder why it was written. There seems to be no personal revelation, nothing below the surface. The author sees everything in black and white, and there doesn't seem to be anything more going on than a chronicling of local legal issues that have little relevance to anyone but a few insiders. Snyder's "interior" struggle seems to be her understanding that other people are bad. I guess she has always been perfect. This may be true, and if so I congratulate her, but it just doesn't make for interesting reading.
This is a "must read".......2002-11-09
It's too bad that the title "In the Belly of the Beast" was already taken because that would have been an appropriate tag for this page turner. Having spent 25 years as a narcotics agent in New York City, I am humbled by the personal danger encountered by Judge Snyder.Courage and intellect such as hers are very rare commodities in this city. The insight that this book provides into the NYC criminal justice system has been previously kept as a dark secret. She is one of the reasons that one can feel safe walking the streets of Manhattan at midnight and we all owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude. Unfortunately, many New Yorkers forget the grafitti ridden days of the 70's and 80's when the judiciary was rife with "Cut em loose Bruces". Watch a re-run of New Jack City to refresh your recollection!
An Impressive Woman and An Impressive Book.......2002-11-07
A well written book which goes into the life of a woman who should be the role model for us all. Facing down vicious drug dealers, writing date rape laws, the first woman to prosecute homocide cases in New York, just on her credentials alone, this book is worth a read.
But Snyder goes further and gives us a very personal and interesting glimpse into her life. At times humorous, at times feisty, but always without varnish, we get a real glimpse into the backroom happenings of a major part of our criminal justice system and into someone who seems to be a major player.
Having read the reviews and heard the term "real-life law and order" invoked several times, I can only agree. I would be honored to serve on Judge Snyder's jury and, in my opinion, we need more people like her.
If this helps Snyder to launch a political career, BRAVO, I, for one, would love to have her helping to put more bad guys away!
Well Done Judge Snyder. You are a Class Act.

Valuable and to the point..........2006-03-26
If you're part of the corporate world, you should recognize that communication skills are at the top of the "must have" list in order to succeed. Lonnie Pacelli has written a compact guide that can help improve that area of your professional existence... The Truth About Getting Your Point Across... And Nothing But the Truth.
Contents: The Truth About You and Your Recipient; The Truth About Setting Direction; The Truth About Running Meetings; The Truth About Developing Effective Presentations; The Truth About Writing Status Reports; The Truth About Brainstorming; The Truth About Problem Solving; The Truth About Interviewing; The Truth About Giving Feedback; The Truth About Being A Good Listener; The Truth About Informal Communications; The Truth About Influencing Those Who Don't Work For You; The Truth About Communicating Globally; References
The book is divided up into 59 two to four page "truths" that cover an aspect of communication. For instance, in the Communicating Globally chapter, #59 is "Just Because They Can Speak Your Native Tongue Doesn't Mean They Understand Everything You Say". Oh, so true. He then relates an incident from his experience speaking in front of a Japanese group that appeared to understand what he was presenting. Only later he found out that he spoke too quickly and used a number of unfamiliar terms. From that, he came up with a number of suggestions to help you avoid that same problem. Short, valuable, and to the point. Personally, I really dug into the Developing Effective Presentations chapter. Some things I've already done right, like Truth #18 - Entertaining An Audience Breeds Effective Learning. But other things I need to take to heart, like #21 - Develop Content Once - Use It A Thousand Times. I need to make sure I have my presentation material organized such that it's easy to reuse and adapt to different audiences.
There's a lot of value in this book, and you'll walk away with a few new things to work on every time you read it. Definitely a good volume to have on your bookshelf.
A useful, practical book - a must have.......2006-03-01

The points discussed in his book are not only practical but immediately applicable, and will increase the effectiveness of any manager when applied. I highly recommend this book.

The Truth About Getting Your Point Across...And Nothing But the Truth is an experience-based, practical guide for anyone who needs to get his or her point across in just about any setting. Whether you are a first-line manager in a large corporation, a CEO of a small business, or a president of a PTA, this book will help you navigate difficult communication situations and give you some very practical tips for dealing with a wide range of communications challenges.
The book contains 59 short chapters, or "truths", grouped into 13 real-life parts, as follows:
Part I: The Truth About You and Your Recipient
Part II: The Truth About Setting Direction
Part III: The Truth About Running Meetings
Part IV: The Truth About Developing Effective Presentations
Part V: The Truth About Writing Status Reports
Part VI: The Truth About Brainstorming
Part VII: The Truth About Problem Solving
Part VIII: The Truth About Interviewing
Part IX: The Truth About Giving Feedback
Part X: The Truth About Being a Good Listener
Part XI: The Truth About Informal Communications
Part XII: The Truth About Influencing Those Who Don't Work for You
Part XIII: The Truth About Communicating Globally
You'll find that some of the parts may apply and others may not; but there is enough breadth in categories that you will likely find at least a couple of the truths relevant and helpful to you. Each of the 59 truths is focused on a specific topic and contains a number of practical take-aways that you as the reader will easily glean from the reading. The truths are catchy, easy to read, and relevant to today. Here are examples of a few truth titles:
* "Truth 12: Watch the pontificator!"
* "Truth 30: Biased facilitators torpedo brainstorming sessions"
* "Truth 47: Don't hang out a therapist shingle unless you're a therapist"
* "Truth 52: Be accessible, not open-door"
* "Truth 59: Just because they can speak in your native tongue doesn't mean they understand everything you say"
Each truth is self-contained, so you can either jump around and read only the truths which you're most interested in or read the entire book, which will take you a couple of hours to get through.
Pacelli draws upon his over 20 years of experience at Accenture and Microsoft to develop a concise and relevant guide to help you with your greatest business communication challenges. You'll find very little in the way of heady or theoretical views here. It's just practical stuff that works. You'll want to keep "The Truth About Getting Your Point Across" handy to refer back to again and again.

This book is a great resource. The points discussed are practical, immediately applicable, and will increase the effectiveness of any manager when applied. I intend to keep this book on my desk as both a reference tool and a reminder of what it takes to be an effective leader.
Product Description
Respected for getting the most from his hard-working players, Gene Keady possesses a fiercely competitive drive which he learned from his father, Lloyd, while growing up in Larned, Kan. For the past 25 seasons, Keady's Purdue Boilermakers were among the Big Ten Conference's most difficult opponents, winning 512 of 772 games, including six Big Ten championships and a pair of trips to the NCAA tournament's Elite Eight. While many know Keady for his fiery sideline demeanor and classic fist pump in a moment of athletic passion, this former national coach of the year has a softer side, which includes an honest respect for the media and a terrific sense of humor. Within the pages of The Truth and Nothing But the Truth, the recently retired Purdue coach talks about everything from his relationship with Texas Tech coach Bob Knight, who was Keady's rival for 20 seasons at Indiana, to how the Boilermakers were able to successfully recruit 1994 National Player of the Year Glenn Robinson out of Gary Roosevelt High School in Lake County, Ind. Keady, 68, explains details how his father-a boxer turned wholesale florist-instilled a deep-seeded love for athletics, which Keady parlayed into a successful playing career at Larned High School, Garden City (Kan.) Junior College and then Kansas State University. Keady was signed by the National Football League's Pittsburgh Steelers in the summer of 1958, but a knee injury cut his pro football career short. He returned to Kansas, accepting a teaching/coaching position at Beloit High School, where basketball-not football-was the only coaching post available. The rest is history. In April, 1980, Keady accepted then-Purdue athletic director George King's offer to replace Lee Rose, who left West Lafayette for a South Florida job. Keady rolled up his sleeves and put Purdue on the college basketball map in a state where Bob Knight and the Indiana Hoosiers were the high-profile targets. It took Keady only four seasons to win his first Big Ten title. From there, he became one of college basketball's icons, while never losing the common touch he learned from his hardworking father in western Kansas.

more for Boilermaker fans .......2007-08-22
A brief autobiography focusing on the 25 years at Purdue by the only coach in Big Ten history to have winning records against every other conference opponent.
Primarily of interest to Purdue and college basketball fans, this could have used a little more editing - some portions are redundant but it was a quick read to get me into the spirit of last year's NCAA tournament.
Great if you're a Purdue fan or Keady fan/follower.......2006-01-06
As a Purdue fan and graduate, I really enjoyed the book. I thought that he gave some interesting insight into player stories and other off court issues, both personal and coaching related, that were unknown to me for the most part. I also found out some interesting things about his relationships with Bob Knight, Michael Jordan, and his summer Olympic colleagues and players.
The book isn't particularly long but I felt it was a fun and interestiing read. If you're a fan, you'll enjoy it.
Dissapointing.......2006-01-03
This was disappointing. It's only 180 pages, and it's not a full sized book. It reads like a Cliff Notes of Purdue basketball history under Keady. I remember most of the big games (at Purdue) that Keady discusses in the book, but he adds little that I didn't already know. The whole thing feels rushed, like they were way behind deadline and had to get it done, or maybe his heart wasn't really into the project in the first place.
