Book Description
No Other Way Out provides a powerful explanation for the emergence of popular revolutionary movements, and the occurrence of actual revolutions, during the Cold War era. This sweeping study ranges from Southeast Asia in the 1940s and 1950s to Central America in the 1970s and 1980s and Eastern Europe in 1989. Goodwin demonstrates how the actions of specific types of authoritarian regimes unwittingly channeled popular resistance into radical and often violent directions. By comparing the historical trajectories of more than a dozen countries, Goodwin also shows how revolutionaries were able to create opportunities for seizing state power.

Book Description
New York Times bestselling author Andrea Kane creates a sizzling mix of emotions, white heat, and pulse-pounding suspense in one of the biggest knockout thrillers of the season. With a child's life at stake, a woman's deepest fears and desires careen toward an explosive climax where there is no time to hesitate, no going back, and
NO WAY OUT
Something is wrong with teacher Julia Talbot's favorite second-grader, the mayor's son Brian. Seeing the outgoing little boy become increasingly anxious and withdrawn, she suspects problems at home, inside the mansion of a high-profile political family. But even Julia doesn't know the real truth. Venture capitalist Connor Stratford, the boy's powerful uncle, does.
Intrigued by Julia, Connor plans a campaign of seduction designed to keep her from snooping -- and to get her into his bed. Yet Julia has already learned too much. As danger bears down on her like a runaway freight train, Brian vanishes, and a desperate hunt to find him draws Julia deeper into a family's secrets and an irresistible passion -- and closer to a place where a child's future, and her own fate, hang in the balance.

Customer Reviews:
Drawn out and predictable.......2007-05-08
Concerned teacher Julia Talbot wants to know why her student Brian Stratford is pre-occupied and no longer his exuberant self. Brian is the son of the upstate NY town's mayor, Steven Stratford. When her inquiries with the Mayor fall on deaf ears, she continues to probe to find out what could be the cause. Enter Brian's uncle, Connor, a Manhattan venture capitalist who's used to cleaning up the messes caused by his older brother. Upon meeting Julia, Connor decides to seduce her to keep her from interfering when Steven's gambling addiction gets the family into hot water, and Julia only becomes more inquisitive. When Brian vanishes, Connor's game plan changes to finding the young boy and holding onto the woman he's wooed under false pretenses.
An early effort by Kane, her writing style has only gotten better, and her suspense, tighter. "No Way Out" suffers from far too much attention to detail and a long and drawn out plot that could've been at trimmed least 100 pages and still retained the plot. Better to skip this one and check out some of her later novels like her vastly superior "I'll Be Watching You."
It was okay but ..........2005-07-20
... several unnecessary errors caught my attention. Two-week-old babies can't smile, even at special uncles. Seven-year-old boys aren't old enough to play in Little League, and are not coordinated enough to throw curve balls well enough to win game after game. And any seven-year-old who had gone through what Brian did would be a basket case, totally unable to turn on a dime and be his old self within minutes of being reunited with his parents. Then there was the sentence, "Conner frankly admitted how much he'd agonized during the hours she'd remained unconscious and his INEXPLICABLE relief when she opened her eyes." (Capitalization mine.) What's inexplicable about that? Where was the editor while this wrong word got by?
And yes, the epilogue was dopey.
Liked it even if..........2004-01-02
I'll begin by saying that like many of the other reviewers I found part of the story very hard to believe. However, I did enjoy the book.
The parts I had the hardest time with were with Julia Talbot (2nd grade teacher and highly educated) she is a favored teacher among her students. However, she is over emotional when it comes to one child in particular Brian (the mayor's son). I understand a caring teacher that wasn't the problem. The problem was that she was overly involved with this child before his problems ever surfaced. He wasn't from a broken home or anything so her attachment to him seemed odd. He seemed more like he should have been her child rather than the Mayor and his wife. Perhaps that is what I was supposed to take from the story I don't know.
Then add in that we are told several times that she was educated very well and yet she is so naive. The boy is having problems so she automatically assumes he's being abused. This aspect of the story was way overblown. I don't want to give away the story so I won't add much about what the storyline is about simply that his family is going through some things and the boy doesn't understand. I do understand that she would be concerned she's his teacher and she notices changes.
However, she's a teacher! She had to have more than one child in her class and this boy is the only one she's worried about. She starts asking questions, etc about what is going on at home. (Secrets of course) I believe she tells the Mayor's brother Connor Stratford later in the story she is a psychologist and yet she is very high strung about one boy. She's investigating what is going on with his family because she's worried about him. At no time did I ever feel that she was thinking as an educator or even a psychologist would. Had I not known otherwise I would have thought she was his mother/aunt/sister because of the concern she showed over him.
Now my next issue is Connor Stratford the attractive corporate mogul brother of the Mayor Steven Stratford. He swoops into town to keep the problems the parents are hiding from the boy and Julia (even though they really are none of her business) under the rug via seducing her. She falls right in after a little banter. This woman who is highly educated and is supposedly looking after the best interest of the child is allowing him to sidetrack her at every chance he has. The reason I even mention it is that she is so set on finding out who is "Abusing" Brian. I found Julia very annoying and that she was jumping the gun about Brian.
Now for the reason I gave the book 5 stars. The story is the story within about Mayor Steven Stratford, his wife Nancy, Brian and their family legacy of politics that Steven/Connor's father wants to lead Steven into. The underlying story is what takes the book on and allows it to fly out of the dull over dramatic effects of Julia searching for who's hurting Brian. Brian's having trouble because tensions at home have him misunderstanding what is going on. The problems are those caused by his father. Steven's demons are coming back to haunt him and that's where the story is. This part of the story was what I loved. Steven is a weak charcter who has made a lot of mistakes that are about more than money. Even though I didn't like him I could understand him better than Julia.
Julia and Connor have great passion together in the bedroom, but the rest of their story doesn't really come together for me until later. Which is why I ended up really liking the book. The ending was a bit Mary Poppins with some erotic moments thrown in.
Overall though the best advice I can give in relation to this book is to suspend your beliefs of what you'd do in that situation and try to hold out for the juicy part of the story when the secrets begin emerging.
What the book gives you is an intricate story(once you get past Julia's obsession/mothering over Brian since he's not her kid). There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing who did what and when.
I still give it 5 stars because it kept me entertained whether I was screaming at Julia or wondering what would happen next:)
Still trying to figure out..........2003-08-14
Where the romance and suspense were in this "romantic suspense". It took me over a week to read this book. The problems that happened in the plot were about as dangerous as a papercut. I just couldn't get involved with the characters. The mayor and brother of the hero (I use the term loosely) was an idiot, the heroine and hero weren't really in the book, I don't know why they fell in love because once they slept together, their relationship (if it could be called such) was nonexistent. The dialogue was like reading a soap opera. Bad guys are referred to as "goons", the word "shebang" was used, and I believe the one "bad guy" was a "slimeball" and "crook". The element of danger was never there for me, there was no romance, and the plot lacked everything. I'm very disappointed. I knew who the "bad guy" was from the start. The "climax" was over in about one paragraph. You knew they weren't going to get away with it, and the child had already been saved. As if you were ever in any doubt.
All in all, I had no idea what was going on half the time because the plot was so loose and I couldn't see because I was laughing so hard over the dialogue.
No Way Out? That's how I felt as I was reading. I skimmed the last few chapters. I didn't miss much. I've read other Andrea Kane...I'll keep reading, and hopefully find something better.
Just skip the epilogue.......2003-04-10
This is the story of a child who perceives the problem of his parents an that keep him down, is a different kind of story because of course that could be real, but in the other hand, as it says in the book "Marriage is not an eternal romance in a path full of roses." Anyone who is married knows that this is true, the problem is that when your children just see the problems, is when they have serious problems.
In the other hand, who wasn't in love with his/her teacher in second grade?
The book will keep you reading and it won't be out of the story at any time. but don't read the epilogue, don't worth it.

Book Description
Political institutions and ideologies are the warty outgrowth of the religious thinking of the man; in a way responsible for the tragedy of mankind. We are slaves to our ideas and beliefs, and we torture ourselves in the hope of achieving something. All our experience, spiritual or otherwise, is the basic cause of our suffering...the body is not interested in anything 'you' are interested in; that is, the battle that is going on all the time. There seems to be no way out, says UG.

response.......2006-02-25
The only disagreement I have with the above review is that I believe U.G. should get *** ** stars. Also I agree with what was
said about Nigargadatta Maharaj. Add in Ramana Maharshi and his direct disciples and there is much to consider that is totally outside the envelope of strive, practice and despair. How truly lucky we are to have such teachings at such a difficult time for the collective. Amen for this great grace.
The Teachings of a man called UG........2005-11-29
The UG. books are all dialogues between UG and others that were recorded on various topics. U.G. Krishnamurti is definately a character in the "spiritual" (he dislikes that word associated with him)community.
It is quite difficult to describe him and his system of thought since he doesn't really have one. I will attempt to do so only for the sake of the reader, not that it will be totally accurate since it will still be a label which he would probably himself disagree with. He's part philospher, guru, social commentator, and ironically-an anti-guru.
He seems to be a self realized man. His main attitude about spirituality is that of pointing out the traps of all these spiritual systems and the gimmicks, money making, scamish guru businesses that have existed over time. In short, pointing out the stranglehold that society can create in an individual who has been sucked into the system of always trying to fix yourself, change, improve or naively following a false spiritual teaching only to become more confused than when you started. His books do a lot of bashing. He's not a gentle, passive kind of guy, he's more a negator of man made concepts and their many traps. Mostly he's tearing down ideologies not creating them.
Most of what he says makes for stimulating contemplation. You may not agree with it at first, but he plants a seed in you that germinates later, and makes you question. He even can come across a bit repulsive at first because he's so on the attack always.
UG Krishnamurti is not to be confused with the famous J. Krishnamurti who UG personally knew and criticizes because he felt that although J. Krishnamurti kept claiming the "no guru is necessary" philosophy, UG. felt that he was being hypocritical since his teachings became a bit of a system that was very institutionalized and JK came out with dozens of books and got trapped in his own following, so U.G. Krishnamurti argues that JK. was in essence another self-inflated guru with a gimmicky system.
It's a bit difficult to get a direct positive outcome of U.G. Krishnamurti's teachings because most of the time he's on the negative, discarding mode, however in the discarding process, one can be forced to give up these gimmicks and sytems and learn to just BE once again. Function from a more natural state of BEING instead of DOING practices all the time and always projecting an idea of fixing yourself in the future-which ironically never arrives.
My slight gripe with UG. is that while I on the whole agree very much with what he is saying, there is a way to move in the direction of Self-Knowledge without falling into gimmicks and sytems that trap us. There have been a few very good teachers along the centuries that have warned seekers to investigate their true nature without falling prey to systems and concepts but also gave students more concrete pointers, which UG never really does. However, in his defense he is not claiming to be a Guru. With that said, I still find him to be a very interesting character for ripe seekers who can handle his very iconaclastic, irreverent style.
For "no-nonsense" type "seekers" that enjoy these types of teachings I recommend Nisargadatta Maharaj. His teachings are also very direct, especially the books of his talks that came out after I AM THAT, like 'Consciousness and the Absolute', 'Prior To Consciousness' and 'The Ultimate Medicine' to name just 3. Nisargadatta Maharaj while also being a annhilator of mind made concepts for the spiritual seeker, offers a slightly different tone that is direct yet a bit more practical than UG. He also taught seekers to tenaciously avoid sytems, gimmicks and the trap of creating a web of spiritual concepts that trip you up in the end. He also never quotes from any scriptures or parroted anybody and encouraged you to do the same. However, he did teach that after all the discarding of concepts one can come to the place of Self-Knowledge, so he does have a bit of a "teaching" however it comes more from rigorous self-investigation, not a system.

Book Description
Christopher Lee Nutter came out of the closet in 1994 with a bang in a brutally honest essay for Details magazine, thrusting him into the spotlight as an unofficial mentor to gay men across the country.
Twelve years later in this edgy memoir, Nutter chronicles his journey from closeted Southern boy to gay New York bartender and party boy, sharing everything he's learned about how gay men are taught to see themselves in a fundamentally destructive way. Assaulted with programming from the "gay" and "straight" worlds alike, gay men are left to ask themselves, Am I the coolest, sexiest, trendiest thing ever, or an illegitimate cancer on society?
Nutter contests that gay men are neither, but rather conscious beings on the path to realizing that they have the power to create their lives according to their own will rather than the will of the world, or the illusion of their fears. Part memoir, part philosophy, The Way Out gives tools tailored to the reality of gay men's daily existence-whether it's in the boardroom, the bedroom or the steam room- so that they can connect to this power, and in the process, discover the love, freedom and happiness they long for and deserve.
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2006-07-31
I read this book five times and I learned something new every time. Give this book to someone you love.
Should be read by every gay man.......2006-06-20
The Way Out is a superb guide for gay men who want to achieve true freedom and peace of mind in their sexuality and relationships, and ultimately, the liberation promised by the greatest spiritual teachers of past and present. I cannot say enough good things about this book. I sincerely believe that nearly every gay man would profit tremendously by reading it and taking its recommendations seriously.
Nutter doesn't attempt to impose a new paradigm onto what it means to be gay, but rather helps us realize the importance of breaking out of ALL limiting paradigms so that we can be truly free. And yes, this is possible! Like the author, I've tasted it myself. As Nutter points out, it's only our unexamined beliefs that cause us pain and apparent limitation. Anybody who doesn't understand this has not yet taken the time to look at and critically examine his or her beliefs. And if the idea of doing this makes you uncomfortable, which it might, it's probably because you're just holding onto a belief about what it might mean.
The Way Out is NOT just another "coming out" guidebook. While it treats coming out with great depth and clarity, it the only book I know of that takes the idea of "coming out" ALL the way -- right through complete self-acceptance into self-liberation. This is the only true liberation possible for anyone, straight or gay.
Nutter has obviously navigated a challenging life road, and he candidly shares his fascinating stories with humility, honesty, humor and the clarity born of the willingness to follow one's own truth. Doing so has brought him enormous wisdom for a man still in his 30's. At 41, I've been following my own path of freedom for many years, but Nutter's book has offered me insights that I crucially needed. I completely agree with the subtitle to the book which suggests that any gay, bi or questioning man can profit from reading it, no matter how in or out of the closet he is.
In fact, if this book becomes the hit it deserves to be, the dominant gay culture, which as Nutter suggests can be as oppressive as straight culture, might change overnight. Buy this book, read it, be inspired by it, dive into your depths, find what is true before and beyond all the garbage in your mind (garbage imposed by straight culture and gay culture, but particularly our own minds), and realize freedom. Then give this book to others so that they can find freedom as well.
In closing, the only limitation I will ascribe to The Way Out is that the author does not explicitly recommend additional readings on the subject of spiritual freedom (although I realize this may have been an editorial decision). Interested readers of this book may want to consult Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" (the biggest-selling spiritual book of the century so far, and one which Nutter quotes in the text), and also Byron Katie's "Loving What Is," which would be an extremely helpful companion to the type of liberating inquiry into one's pain-inducing beliefs that Nutter recommends. The teachings of these two authors will complement perfectly Nutter's inspiring teachings on freedom in the final part of his marvelous book.
The Easy Way Out.......2006-06-09
I am a gay man but not a "book reader" (although I read a bunch of classics for school...). When I picked up this book, something told me this was not an ordinary book.. And after reading it twice I can attest that the rare combination Nutter created betrween personal journal and advice is truly magical and very easy to read. Although my own personal experiences were different than his, the way he writes allows you to apply the Wisdom he offers to your own life. It helped me a great deal.
Inspirational.......2006-05-18
Christopher Nutter's book is truly inspirational. I am not a gay man. In fact, I am a straight woman. But the information contained in Mr. Nutter's real life stories, and his journey toward self realization is brilliant and thought provoking for everyone. I recommend this book for you to read, or, at the very least, to purchase for a gay friend or family member. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent as mysteries go - great characters.......2007-04-15
Luke McClendon, 35 and at his peak, is a quarter-breed cowboy and illigitimate son of Baxter McClendon and he runs the Montrose ranch for his step-mother, Kizzie and step-brothers, Tyler and Grant.
Tyler, about 30, we meet as the sheriff of Luma County. Neither brothers have any interest in running the Montrose.
Deanna Atchley is the girl next door. As a spoiled, indulged teenager she wanted Luke and did whatever it took to meet up with him. It was her testimony that put Luke in prison for the murder of her father. He didn't believe she couldn't remember.
All Luke wanted now was revenge on her for betraying him. It has been fifteen years since her father's murder and ten years since Luke got out of prison. All Luke could envision was Deanna living the good life somewhere. He was certain she had gotten rid of his baby.
Deanna has started having nightmares and flashbacks and now must face the past in order to get on with her life. She is also determined to clear Luke's name. Yet was the price he asked for his help too high. Could she tolerate his treatment of her?
Deanna wondered what her mother, Phyllis and her brother, Junior and his wife, Benita would say to her regaining her memory.
She was sure that one of them knew who killed her father. The man who horsewhipped Luke and threatened to kill him. He would not tolerate her having a child by Luke.
Plenty of charged emotions as hatred threatened to destroy Luke - and Deanna needing forgiveness - betrayal and mistrust - murder and vengence - wonderful characters - brutal disregard of emotions.
It has it all.
Definitely Recommended --M Maybe a keeper? you decide.
FANTASTIC.......1998-11-07
I thought this book was the best of Beverly Barton. I could not put this book down, I had to finish reading that day. Deanna was so in love with Luke, but her family stopped at nothing to keep them apart. His trial and release from prison for the murder of Deanna's father was unreal. Deanna came back into Luke's life to clear his name, but the only thing on his mind for her was revenge. I loved this book, the passion and sex, was great. But the plot and the ending of this book was unreal. I could not believe it. Keep writing those books BEVERLY!!!
FANTASTIC.......1998-11-03
This book was so good. I love every book that I've read by Beverly Barton, but this book had to be the best. They loved each other, but her family got in their way and would not let go. This book is full of passion and sex. The plot was so good that I could not put the book down until I finished it. I read it in a day. What can I say? Just read her books, you will thoroughly enjoy them.
FANTASTIC.......1998-10-30
I have read this last book of Beverly Barton's. I love this book. The passion, sex, plot and the ending was great. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to read it. It is worth you time to read this book. I have read every book I believe Beverly has written. She is a great writer with so much feeling in her books.

Helpful book.......2006-09-19
A quick background..My great-great-grandfather had 3 wives. He was also one of the founders of St. George, Utah. He also built the hand carts that the mormons used for their trek.
I am not a mormon, my mother would not alllow it. My father was baptised mormon, but did not attend the church. Because there was no church where he grew up.
I read the book and learned from it.
I loaned it to the pastor of my church. His mother was dating a mormon. He said it was a very good book, and gave him a lot of insight to the church.
I would read Judy Robertson's book, before I even concered becoming a mormon.

The 'tone' of the book bothered me.......2004-07-13
Robertson describes how her family voluntarily joined the Mormon church, her experience as a woman in the church, and her family's subsequent leaving of the church. While not a difficult read, I found myself rolling my eyes quite a number of times at the `complaining' tone that comes across. It interfered a lot with her credibility with me. For instance, Robertson complains about the different tasks and responsibilities she had in the church (which she voluntarily agreed to take on). I had the impression that she was trying to display a picture of coercion within the church. However, her complaining (or `whining' as other reviewers have described it), combined with a lack of any descriptions that could be considered significantly coercive, failed to convince me that she was made to do much against her will.
That being said, the chapters on the temple ceremony is definitely worth reading. The LDS church considers the temple ordinance ceremony very sacred and thus keeps it quite secret. From my other readings I think the ceremony has been changed somewhat from Robertson's experience. From what I have read, the blood oath and the drama that represents non-LDS pastors as being in cahoots with Lucifer has been changed.
Finally, I think there are other books that do a much better job of describing what it is like to be a member of the Mormon church , and then to leave it. One of the best ones I have read is Suddenly Strangers by Brad and Chris Morin.
Incredible Information.......2003-12-12
I highly recommend this book to all who have an interest in finding out the truth about the seamy side of Latter Day Saints, ie, Mormons. It is a real eye opener. I read it because, several years ago, my daughter became associated with a group of Mormon dancers/performers and was one of the few Christians involved. When I would talk to other parents, who were most kind and solicitous, and ask for details about their religion, they glowed and gushed but never gave me anything really definite, nothing with strength or "meat" to it. They did offer to sponsor me or help me find out more about joining the Mormon faith. In talking to them, I found that there were a large quantity of arguments presented to me as to why Christianity didn't work, but these were very pat and almost the same, word for word, from many mouths. There were offers to give me a copy of the Book of Mormon, which I did read. It seemed disjointed and not logical. I bought "No Regrets" by Judy Robertson, because I needed more information. It confirmed some uneasy suspicions that I had, plus added new knowledge, sometimes quite astounding and frightening, that allowed me to realize why no concrete principles had been laid before me by my Mormon friends. I believe what is written and will recommend this book to any who might ask.
The Horrifying Truth.......2003-08-14
Having Dated a Very Attractive Mormon Woman for 3 months,I was very ignorant of her religion even though I considered myself a Well informed Christian. When she realized she would NEVER convert me(I KNEW JOSEPH SMITH was a FALSE PROPHET) See GALATIANS 1:8,9 she started to open up to the PROSPECT OF Questioning her religion.I gave her this book after I read it & she only made it up to the temple part & RAN TO HER LOCAL BISHOP.She will not speak to me now,Her Bishop told her to stay away. This book is a MUST-READ for anyone that wants to protect themselves and their Loved ones. This is the MOST DECEPTIVE,DESTRUCTIVE Religion of our time and will guarantee you a FAST TRIP TO HELL AT YOUR DEATH. Strong words YES, But the TRUTH must be told! The BIBLE is the ONLY word of GOD!
Alot of Nonsense.......2002-11-08
I read her book three times, so as to try to understand her direction, I had all of the material at my side so I could cross reference all her " Facts ", she truly did not know what she read, If she truly believed when she joined the faith she would not have questioned it. I myself was a " Mormon " even a held a priesthood office, I fell away for my own reasons, was excommunicated at the age of 25 and haven't been back since. Now at the age of 41 and having research and visited many other Christian denominations I still hold true to what I believe and I will go to my death never denouncing the faith nor it's direction. I found throughout my life that the things in life that most scare us, tend to be that which we don't understand. How many have read this book, and not read any of the LDS Churches teachings, There are two sides to every story. Most books that have been written against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints have been done so by people who have been excommunicated for one thing or an other. I deserved to be removed from their membership and I have made my peace with GOD. And in no way hold the LDS church at fault. Some of their membership are not as educated in church direction as they should be and we all can be misguided my man, no matter what church you attend, whether Christian, Muslim, Hindu what have you. So read with a open heart pray about it and if you truly believe you will get an answer. The LDS church is the fastest growing denomination of Christianity for a reason, and in no way can that many people be mislead at one time. My Lord and Savior have caused to many blessing in my life to make me change my heart.... I will carry my Testimony to my grave and beyond. A Catholic Cardinal once said of the LDS church, " That if the LDS church is right and the Catholic church is wrong ( which the LDS church does not teach ) then all others are wrong also because all other churchs stem from the Catholic church and the reformation " No where on this planet will anyone find a book written by any member of the LDS faith that calls any Christian denomination wrong, as all Christians have the truth in the Bible and if we follow it's teaching and call ourselfs followers of Christ we all fall short of Him who we must emulate as for those whose deny a Christ ( Savior ) I Weep for Thee
