Book Description
Miss Juliathat Southern spitfire of a certain age who is never less than charming, even when she's at her most opinionatedhas been praised by Fannie Flagg as one of the most delightful characters to come along in years. In Miss Julia Hits the Road, she is becoming increasingly concerned about her gentleman friend, Sam, who has suddenly started wearing cowboy boots, sending her flowers, and writing bad poetry. And when he shows up on a Harley-Davidson Road King and asks her to hop on, she's convinced he's lost his mind. Meanwhile, her invaluable housekeeper, Lillian, has been evicted from her home by her greedy landlord. Deciding that Lillian's need is greater than her own fear (not to mention loss of dignity), Miss Julia takes Sam up on his offer and sets off on a motorcycle Poker Run to raise some fast cash. She's ready to risk life and limb in Sam's sidecar to save Lillian's home from the bulldozer, but will Miss Julia's scheme work?

Hackneyed tripe.......2007-05-15
Although Miss Julia is not bigoted, her creator is. I hated the way the maid's speech was rendered in Step-n-fetch-it dialog while Miss Julia, who surely has a heavy Southern accent, is depicted as speaking standard English. The character of the maid is also trite. She could have stepped straight out of Gone With the Wind.
I may have disliked the book because I dislike Miss Julia, who is prissy, prickly and acts with the unthinking arrogance of someone born at the top of a very small social heap.
Miss Julia is a HOOT!.......2007-01-11
Maybe I'm biased because I've lived my life in the South, but Miss Julia is a great character. Ann Ross's writing is fresh and funny and moves quickly. Ms. Ross had me laughing out loud.
MY second favorite Miss Julia!.......2006-11-25
Besides the original Miss Julia book, this is the best! It has the humour and the Southern charm that the original captured. Some of the other Miss Julia books are a litte strident and formulaic, but, in this one, Miss Julia shows her Southern etiquette and her spunk to the reader's delight. The description of the race is very funny and her thoughts are clearly those of a woman trying to move with the times in spite of her better judgment. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Okay filler.......2006-07-29
The phallic jokes were kind of jr high to me. However, I liked that Miss Julia was encouraging the pastor's wife to defy her husband, and have some fun.
Miss Julia rides a Harley.......2005-08-16
Miss Julia is devoted to her housekeeper Lillian, so when Lillian's landlord threatens to evict her, along with the rest of the neighborhood, the prim Presbyterian jumps into action. She and her friends begin a campaign to raise enough money to purchase the threatened neighborhood and to refurbish it for its tenants. The major fundraising event is to be a Poker Run for motorcycles. Miss Julia refuses to participate until she is offered a large sum of money to ride with her friend Sam. Throwing caution to the wind, Miss Julia persuades her prominent friends to participate in the motorcyle ride, and she herself climbs into Sam's sidecar. Thus begins one of the most hilarious and star-crossed motorcyle events ever. Despite the disapproval of her pastor and the sabatoge tactics of an enemy, she dons a pair of black leather pants and rides into the sunset. What will author Ann B. Ross think of next? I can't wait to find out!

Customer Reviews:
Playing cards; not a book!.......2007-08-04
I thought this was a book until I received it in the mail. It's 50 "playing cards"; stiff paper looseleaf cards. I would have preferred a book and will have to be more careful next time I purchase from Amazon.com.
Free AAA Guide Book Better!.......2007-02-09
I love watching the Bay Area Backroads TV show. I thought the card deck would be as advertised, toss in your glove compartment and off you go!There are lots of cards of individual landmarks to visit and one fold out card with a very simple map, but you will still need a real map, lodging book and a restaurant guide to make a nice trip out of any one of the destination cards. I think I will stick to cutting the weekend trip guides out of Sunset and Via magazines. I was dissapointed with the card set.

Another great one.......2007-08-14
Love Nicholas Spark and most of his books. This was a good one, easy to immagine what is going to happen, but still a very good love story with some mistery.
I really wanted to love this book.............2007-07-23
Okay, so I fell in love with the characters in this book immediately. I cared for them and was interested to see what would happen as the story progressed. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the writing about halfway through. I just did not dig this book....just not enough punch, I guess. I have loved other stories by this author and will try another.
A great beach read.......2007-07-20
I just finished this book in two days while lying on the beach. I had no idea what it was about- I just picked it up on the best sellers at Books-A-Million (just wanting a book for the beach). I love Nicholas Sparks so I new it had to be good and I was not dissappoited with this book either. If you want a great read with a few twist then this is a great book to read. It will keep you reading and wanting to know more.
I'm hooked!.......2007-07-04
As an early childhood teacher I don't really read many "grown up" books. Once in a blue moon I have the time and come across a book that really grabs my attention. This happened with this book. I had seen the movie "The Notebook" and when I found "The Wedding" at my sister's house I couldn't put it down. I finished it in just a few days (a really big deal for me). The day I was done I bought "A Bend in the Road." As much as I love Allie and Noah from the other books, this one was my favorite. It takes hold of your heart right from the beginning. This is one of those that you don't want to end. I think the fact that Sparks' stories are set in NC is one of the big draws for me, being from the south myself I'm naturally a hopeless romantic. I finished "Message in a Bottle" this morning and I've started on "True Believer". I guess this makes me an avid reader, well almost. The point being, if you love a love story and a good cry mixed with tons of other emotions....this is a book you'll want to read. Sparks certainly knows how to draw in readers with his vivid details and breathtaking descriptions! It's easy to identify with his characters because at some point we've all been in love and most of us have been burned by our feeling in some way. This story is just a FEEL GOOD love story even though it has a somewhat sad backdrop.
A Bend in the Road.......2007-06-13
This was my favorite book. I have read all books written by Nicholas sparks. The mixture of tragedy and romance was perfectly balanced. I love the way that all of his books teach a life lisson. This teaches to not take anything for granted. At any moment you can lose something that is close to you. Also taeches that while driving, eventhough you may think you are aware of everything that is going on there still can be more that is not visable to the eye. and it may jump out at any moment just as the dog did. Also you must never run away, you must face that reality of life. If you don't face up to your realityyour life may be chamged for the worse just as Brians was.

Got the "blahs" - is it snowing - is it cold - are you stuck on the couch and bored to tears? Travel Tales ... An Old Retiree, His RV, His Dog, and His Woman (not necessarily in order of preference) Hit The Road by Ken Halloran could provide the antidote for these all-to-common ailments. It focuses, in a humorous way, on everyday events that happen to everyday people while touring and traveling in a Recreational Vehicle (RV). If you are an RV enthusiast, perhaps retired and a current "snowbird", you will readily relate to the adventures in the book. If you're sitting at home wondering what you're going to do when retirement comes knocking, you will receive a bit of insight into an RV "snowbird's" lifestyle. Travel Tales... wants to make you smile and wants to get you up and get you going!

LOL fun!.......2007-06-11
A wonderful book! I was not in the trailer with this couple...but I felt like I was. Frequently, on the trip (my trip with them when I was reading) I had to stop and laugh...a big belly laugh. The way Hollarn wrote the book was so greatly enjoyable. Thanks for a wonderful read and a fun, fun adventure.

Enjoy The Ride.......2007-01-09
Even readers who have never traveled by RV will find this book engrossing, highly entertaining , informative and hilarious. It is a wonderful mix of humor and great facts about places to visit in the U.S. I felt like I was there traveling with the author and his wife--and loving every minute of it. This is one of those books where you can hardly wait to see what happens next.

Book Description
Brit has had her driver’s license only 11 days when her parents drop her off to stay at her grandmother’s house for two weeks while they go on vacation. Little do they know Brit is headed for a three-state road trip with Nannie to pick up her college roommates, Florence, Aurelia, and Daisy, and bring them to their alma mater for their 65th—and most likely final—reunion.
A reluctant recruit at first, Brit is anxious as well as annoyed when she finds herself responsible for her fragile passengers. But things change as she sits behind the wheel up front and listens to “the girls” in the backseat laugh and reminisce about their 65 years of friendship. Inspired by their lifelong loyalty, Brit is willing to do whatever it takes to get the former college roommates to their reunion safely.
From bestselling author Caroline B. Cooney, a heartwarming look at friendship, both young and old.

Very good book.......2007-09-04
This is a very good book that I have read!! It is very good for teenagers!!!!!
WONDERFUL!.......2007-02-25
This story by Caroline B. Cooney was delightful. I could not put this book down and read it in a day. The book is written using relatable context and has a similie so adorable, that I can't get out of my mind:
"Nannie was wearing a mauve silk suit and looked rather like a tulip."
I simply loved this book and hope there will be more adventures with Brit and "the girls"!
BUCKLE UP FOR A FAST-PACED READ!.......2006-08-12
Caroline Cooney is a master at rapid paced action that takes your breath away.
When I bought HIT THE ROAD, I thought this one looks kind of tame and will be just a light read about a girl helping her grandmother -- NOT! There was nothing light or tame about this exciting adventure. The heroine's downhill race into danger and risk is thrilling. Just when you think things will get better, the danger increases. Caroline Cooney doesn't hold back with consequences, turning a simple drive into a perilous journey.
I couldn't stop flipping pages, eager to find out what happened next, surprised by a few plot turns, and completely satisfied when justice finally prevailed at the end.
It's no wonder that Caroline B. Cooney is one of my favorite authors. Next book I plan to buy of hers: CODE ORANGE.

She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain..........2006-08-02
Caroline B. Cooney's latest novel, HIT THE ROAD, is without a doubt one of the funniest books I've ever read. Britanny is in for quite a surprise when she arrives at her grandmother's house to 'babysit' her while her parents are on an Alaskan vacation. You see, Nannie has plans of her own--none of which includes staying home and watching tv--so Brit, relunctantly at first, joins her schemes little knowing how those adventures would change her life.
The plan? To pick up her former college roomates Flo, Aurelia, and Daisy and head to their 65th college reunion in Maine.
The problem? All of these ladies have been told by their adult children that they are NOT going to be allowed to go because they are too sick, too old, or too senile. In fact, Aurelia is in a facility for Alzheimer's under constant guard.
The solution? Using a rental car, and a newly licensed 16 year old...drive across New England, pick up Flo, and kidnap Aurelia, etc.
But Plan A is always being revised...you see it's not easy for Brit to follow the plan when her Nannie can't remember which town, which street, or even the last name of her best friend, Flo.
What happens along the way is both hilarious and bittersweet, as Brit gets to know these "girls" she learns some life lessons of her own.
Full of humor, action, adventure...HIT THE ROAD is an amazing novel.
A fun-filled road trip adventure.......2006-06-22
Sixteen-year-old Brit has only had her license for 11 days when her parents drop her off at her Nannie's house while they go on vacation to Alaska. Little does Brit realize, but she's about to get the driver's education of her life. Nannie doesn't plan on sitting in the house for the next two weeks; she has bigger things in store. Nannie and her three best friends from college --- Flo, Aurelia and Daisy --- have gone to every single reunion since their college graduation up until last year, when their adult children won. Their children deemed them "too old and sick" to attend. Nannie has decided, however, that this year "They lose. I'm the driver."
Brit knows this is a problem. Not only is Nannie's eyesight poor, she also can't reach the gas and break pedals. That's why Brit's mother sold Nannie's Cadillac and cut up Nannie's license. But that still doesn't stop the plan to go to Reunion. Nannie gets a replacement license and a rental car. Now Brit is faced with a dilemma --- either let her grandmother drive and risk injury to herself and others, or Brit will be the driver. Even though Brit has her driver's license, it's illegal for her to drive a rental car, plus she'd get in big trouble with her parents. Nevertheless, Brit loves her grandmother and feels sad that Nannie and "the girls" won't make this special Reunion without her. Putting her best judgment aside, Brit reluctantly agrees and begins the tri-state road trip of her life.
But there are many bumps in the road. Brit has to drive crazy and scary highways from Connecticut to Long Island where they pick up Flo. Her cell phone is ringing off the hook and she's repeatedly lying to her parents concerning her whereabouts. And they have to kidnap Aurelia from the nursing home that her evil son Aston III has put her in without her consent. Aurelia insists her son is just out to get her money, but Aston argues that his mother has Alzheimer's and doesn't know what she's doing. When he finds out that Brit has taken his mother out of the home, he threatens the teen. The action comes to a head when Brit and Aston come face to face.
HIT THE ROAD is a very different type of road trip story. Brit realizes that the more time she spends with "the girls" the more enlightenment she has on her own life. While Brit's life is truly just beginning, the girls spend their time reminiscing about times in the past. The friendship and bonds between these old women inspire Brit to help the girls get to their beloved reunion despite all the bumps they encounter. Brit's cell phone plays a key role in the story, which is refreshing to see in modern YA fiction. Her phone gives her a link to the outside world where she can connect with her parents, friends, and her crush/helper/friend, Coop. Coop does all sorts of Internet research to help Brit as she is in the midst of her journey. While the story may start out a bit slow, it snowballs into a fast-paced adventure with some great characters you just can't help but love.

A USA Today Bestselling Author
After a murder case threatens her safety, attorney Brooke Benton seeks sanctuary in the quiet Amish community of Maplecreek. Although the locals disagree with her worldly ways, she soon manages to find a place in their lives. But when a tragic hit-and-run accident turns fatal, Brooke cannot abide by the community's belief in absolute forgiveness. She wants answers.
Customer Reviews:
Loved this book!!.......2004-06-01
This book had me from the very first page. I had trouble putting it down and read it in 2 days. I thought it was very well written and found the references to the Amish very interesting. I highly recommend this book.
Want an Amish mystery? Try "Plain Truth" instead........2000-06-14
Pretty bad novel about attorney Brooke Benton (yuck!) who flees the big city (she's being stalked by a maniac who's mad she got a killer off) and moves to Amish country. Not long after she's there, a big truck runs into a buggy full of Amish teens and then flees the scene. The teens all die and Brooke takes over the investigation. All the while, she's swooning over Daniel, a studly Amish guy, and crying a lot. Pretty badly written, not that entertaining, and a little bit patronizing about the Amish, but it takes a lot more than that to get me to put down a book once I've started it. Maybe it's a pride thing. I honestly can't explain why I bothered reading past page 35.
A far, far better mystery involving the Amish community is Jodi Picoult's "Plain Truth." Head on over there and buy that one instead!
Good informative entertainment........1998-06-18
Karen Harper seldom disappoints and this book was no exception. The story was interesting and the Amish connection was informative as well. Daniel and Brooke seemed like a "real" couple and Daniel's torment about his "Amishness" was realistically portrayed. I look forward to reading EMPTY CRADLE, which is waiting on my shelf.
Mystery and romance in Amish country!.......1997-07-25
A great story! Mystery, romance and adventure--in a quiet Amish community? Yes! Yes!
A lady lawyer leaves the big city seeking safety from a stalker for herself and her young niece. They come to Maplecreek to operate a friend's quilt shop. The peaceful community is disrupted when four young Amish are killed by a mysterious hit and run driver. The lawyer-in-hiding feels compelled to find the killer of her young friends.
Meanwhile an uneasy relationship is building between the worldly lawyer and a 'plain' man who has returned from life outside to commit himself to the Amish ways.
The author pieces together her story like a fine Amish quilt and keeps the reader guessing until the end. The characters are very well developed and believable and I look forward to reading more from Ms Harper
