5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining, but Sad.......2007-04-25

This is a true story of a teen who was raped. I really enjoyed reading her life story. I felt like I was actually there in her life. She had a wonderful relationship with her mother and her best friends. Nancy was a girl who loved life. The ending of the book was very sad, especially when Nancy became very sick and suffered a lot.

i am 20 years old and a victim of date rape at age 12. I am reading this book now and only half way through and im in tears, in tears because i ave been where she is in her darkness and it has taken me 8 years to over come most of my fears and my ticks with men.. as far as the book being shameful.. hardly... i have 2 sisters under 15 and i dont care if beatrice sparks invented this story after a bad date or if no such "nancy" existed. because i was nancy 8 years ago.. i was lucky enough not to have been infected with HIV but girls her age need to be warned and they need to know that no matter how old or how sweet every body is capable of hurting them. to be careful and to always trust in their parents because for all they know they were a victim like nancy and myself and thousands of other under age girls and even thousands of age women.. this is a tragic honest tale of all that we have been through but were to afraid to share.. i would recommend this book to anybody with eyes..there is truth in everypage.. please read this book and every other book edited by beatrice sparks and have your children read them too.. i wish i would have read it before it happened to me.. thank you nancy for being so strong and giving millions of girls like you courage to fight.

with love

1 out of 5 stars Shameful.......2007-01-06

Beatrice Sparks is the author/editor of a serious of "anonymous" teen diaries. They are meant as "warnings" to children. In fact, they are not based on real diaries and the only one that actually was, she used about 10% of the journal entries and added a Satanic theme which horrified the family.

Now I am aware that children should be taught such things as drugs are bad, teenage pregnancy is not preferable, don't kill yourself etc. However, I take offense when presented in this manner. Children learn best from the truth not extreme propaganda. I also take offense that many libraries (especially school libraries) list this book as non-fiction, when in fact it is a work of fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Away Laughing on a Fast Camel review.......2007-04-25

Away Laughing on a Fast Camel is the fifth book in the Georgia Nicholson series. Georgia, a British teenager full of gorgeosity and attitude continues the cunning chronicles that are her diaries, full of red-bottom-osity, love-stricken cats, and a tres mad toddler. On top of all that, Georgia's love interest, the lead singer of the "Stiff Dylans", Robbie, (aka the Sex God) is off to Kiwi-a-go-go land, and Georgia's got the Cosmic Horn for their new singer, Masimo.
Libby, Georgia's toddler sister, is quite literally mad. One minute she's trying to kiss you, the next she's hitting you and calling you "cheeky monkey". You never know what's going to happen with that crazy bugger whether she's snuggling a turnip or running around in the nuddy-pants. I love the absolutely outrageous antics she gets up to, and it's always laugh out loud hilarious.
I totally recommend this book for girls in their teenage years. Some topics may be too awkward for younger girls. I love this book because there's a laugh on every page. Also, it's a great source for outrageous British slang. Georgia is always on a wacky adventure, so you can never put it down or else you will have tres snog withdrawel. This book is fabbity-fab-fab and you won't be able to read it just once!!

5 out of 5 stars True Confessions of Georgia Nicolson is FAB!.......2007-01-20

I love these books. I started getting them on book on tape at the library and I enjoy them sooo much. I really want to get them at the book store so that I can read them over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars Away Laughing on a Fast Camel.......2006-11-30

While S.G.(Robbie) is off in Kiwi-a-gogo,to snog the local sheep, Georgia is left on her all aloney, on her owney! But never fear, a new, and BETTER S.G. is on his way! And this one has an Italian accent! Eith Georgia, who knows what could go wrong? Oh, yeah! EVERYTHING! With Dave the laugh coaching her along, this is one of the funniest books in the searies!

4 out of 5 stars Another entry in the fabbity-fab life of Georgia Nicolson.......2006-10-29

With the Sex God away in Kiwi-a goo-goo land snogging marsupials and only writing to Georgia about thermal activity, Georgia is fully into her sadosity phase. That is until the new gorgy singer for the Stiff Dylans shows up. Suffering from a flash return of red bottomisity Georgia pulls out all the stops to snare the Sex Meister. Unfortunately this includes having her eyelids accidentally glue together with her boy entrancers at a most inopportune moment. Lucky for Georgia she always can turn to her Master of the Horn instructor, Dave the Laugh for a bit of advice (and a happy round of snogging).

The more I read of Georgia Nicolson's adventures the more I find myself chuckling. I did miss Angus' input a little, but the parts featuring the new little addition to the family in the form of Angus' cross-eyed offspring made up for it. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am anxious to see what will happen to Georgia when she reaches Hamburger-a-goo-goo land in the next book.

3 out of 5 stars An okay book, not exciting........2006-10-21

Away Laughing on a Fast Camel
By Louise Rennison
Realistic Fiction

This book, Away Laughing on a Fast Camel, is a story about the feelings and thoughts of a girl named Georgia Nicholson, who lives in Britain. She has a crazy family consisting of a mom a dad and a 3-year-old sister. Georgia seems not to get along with her family for the most part, and relies a lot on her friends. The book states all of her feelings toward school, family, friends, and the world. As Georgia grows into adolescence, hormones often take over and make for a funny scene more than once as the story progresses. In this book, Georgia is writing a diary. Diary form fits this story very well because the author can go into more detail about Georgia's feelings than if it was told in 3rd person. The journal entries are entered at completely random times, Georgia might write 10 days in a row, and then not write another for a week or so. That, I think was my only problem with the authors writing style. Because of the randomness of the entry time, if I missed one or two dates, I might think it was September and it would turn out to be November. I wish the author had written in a more clear, organized way. I didn't enjoy this book a ton, but I liked it okay. I feel like the plot is not complex enough to captivate the reader, or grab their attention. In the previous books in this series, a lot went on and a new problem occurred each time. In this novel however, I was often bored and felt like many pages were there just to make the book longer. Over all, I'd give this book, three and a half stars.

The fourth volume in Meg Cabot's popular Princess Diaries series, Princess in Waiting begins in the tiny country of Genovia, where 14-year-old Mia, the unlikely royal, is on winter break trying not to bite her fingernails. Being a princess and fighting for the installation of parking meters is tough, when all you really want to do is go back to your regular life in New York City and see your dreamy boyfriend Michael. Of course, Mia is soon back in the city, trying not to fail Algebra II and trying to stay afloat in a sea of self-doubt. Could it be true that she is merely a "massive reject" covered with orange cat hair? For that matter, is finding her missing lucky Queen Amidala underwear as important as finding her secret talent? Mia's frank, funny diary entries range from "Things to Do" lists ("Stop obsessing over whether or not Michael loves you vs. being in love with you"); lists of the valuable lessons of romantic heroines ("3. Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice: Boys like it when you are smart-alecky."); transcripts of instant-messaging rounds with Michael; to poems ("Like the Millenium Falcon in hyperdrive/ our love will continue to thrive and thrive") and general irrational tirades. Whether or not Mia ever achieves her much-sought-after "self-actualization," teens will enjoy reading her over-the-top, up-to-the-minute-hip diary. (Ages 12 and older) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Never before has the world seen such a princess.

Nor have her own subjects, for that matter. But Genovian politics are nothing next to Mia's real troubles. Between canceled dated with her long-sought-after royal consort, a second semester of dreaded Algebra, more princess lessons from Grandmére, and the inability to stop gnawing on her fingernails, isn't there anything Mia is good at besides inheriting an unwanted royal title?

The book was good it told alot about princess Mia she was a princess of Ginovia she did not know she was a princess at first until her grandmother came and told her and took her on a journy to become a princess and she tryed her best and she did great.

5 out of 5 stars Princess in waiting.......2006-11-06

This book is definitely one of those books that i could read over and over and over again without getting bored with it. I really enjoyed reading this book because its a great plot and i think that alot of girls can relate with Mia and what she writes about in her diary. This book is about when Mia goes on christams break in genovia and how she has to deal without talking to or seeing her true love Michael for days. Then when she returns home she starts obsessing if Michael loves her or is in love with her. Mias mind is like a tornado, she's always thinking and worrying about new things that she doesn't need to worry about. With this type of story-i couldn't put the book down!

5 out of 5 stars Princess in Waiting.......2006-09-02

This was definitely worth the 2 weeks I waited for it to be in the library!
Mia is spending her Winter vacation in Genovia, and when she comes back she continues to obsess over whether Michael loves her or is In Love with her (her mind is getting warped after reading Jane Eyre) and she really wants to get over the feeling that she doesn't have a talent and that she doesn't know how she can be so lucky to have Michael.
So fun!

5 out of 5 stars awsome!!!!!.......2006-05-10

the princess diary books are awsome! I just finished this book like ten minites ago and the ending is the best ending of al the princess diary books I'v read so far! defenetly recamend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Princess in Whining.......2006-03-24

A disgrace to the previous "Princess" books, this is possibly the worst of them all. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the previous novels in this series, eager for the next. I was drinking these books up as though I'd just ran miles. But this book I almost literally snored through. Mia was turned from a funny, clumsy princess into a whining brat. All she worried about in this book was whether her dream boy was truly "in love" with her or not. Hey, she was his girlfriend -- what more can you ask for? In Mia Thermopolis' eyes, plenty. She just can't get enough. I thought she got over complaining about her princess lessons -- my mistake. She's also an ungrateful little snob -- her boyfriend, Michael, is so sweet and always doing such nice things for her, like coming into Algebra to say hi to her every morning even though he rode with her to school, and dedicating songs to her. And I've noticed that not once does she repay him. Mia is just a bad character to mess with!

5 out of 5 stars She's maaaaaaaad!.......2007-06-10

The Georgia Nicolson character IS truly MAAAAAAAAAD and this makes for some really good laughs. Actually, I laughed myself so hard I was literally crying and had to hold my belly. Boy Entrancers is hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing in a long while!

5 out of 5 stars It is what it is - too funny!.......2007-02-27

Oh, how clever Louise Rennison is. This hilarious novel reminds me a bit of a stand-up comedian's routine with a plot - of sorts. English teenager, Georgia, (the main character) has her own combination of slang and made up alterations of words that take a bit of getting used to at first. But her descriptions of events, friends, her own family, and life in general are so fast, funny, and furious, I could hardly stop laughing. Of course, it's all very silly, and Georgia comes across as perhaps a little to obsessed with snogging boys, or a bit too dim-witted at times, but then maybe not. In any event, if you like novels that are clearly intended to make you laugh, and you aren't looking for any deep messages except that there is always humor to be found in the strange and sometimes unbelieveably wacky things teenagers do, then this book is for you. Highly recommended for kids over 13 and anyone else who enjoys a good laugh.

4 out of 5 stars More of the good stuff.......2007-01-10

another amusing Georgia Nicholson story -- nothing too new, but hilariously funny as always

5 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK.......2006-09-26

America and London are two different worlds. The people speak differently, eat differently, and drive on different sides of the road. So it's a big transition when someone from either country goes to visit the other one. Then He Ate my Boy Enrancers, by Louise Rennison, is the sixth in the Georgia Nicolson Series, which was kicked off by Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging.. In this teen-fiction story, British 16 year-old Georgia Nicolson travels to America. She's not exactly what you call a typical teenager, as she makes up creative words, such as "hamburger-a-gogo land" (America), and loves getting into trouble. Despite her outgoing and comical personality, Georgia may have trouble keeping her wacky family in line. Vati, her loony father, has Georgia begging him not to wear his overalls in public. There is also Mutti, (her mother), and Uncle Eddie, who humiliate her at any given moment. Her 4-year old sister, Libby, is just as crazy as all the rest of them and emphatically loves to sing, er, interesting songs. Thank god Georgia's best friend, Jas, is also tagging along. She may regularly complain about missing her boyfriend and have annoying bangs, but she is the sanest person accompanying Georgia on this trip. The good news is, Masimo, gorgeous Italian-American singer of the band, The Stiff Dylans and Georgia's nearly boyfriend, is visiting his family in Manhattan. He thinks Georgia is still back in London, so imagine his expression when she pops up out of nowhere and says hello! This, however, may be a bit more difficult to achieve then Georgia pictured......

Georgia and her friends were hysterical! I couldn't stop laughing the entire time I was reading. The language and expressions used in this novel were an original blend of British slang and creatively made-up words. I also found that the characters were all well-developed, and of course, hilarious. I appreciate the way Rennison put together a diverse cast of characters. Their personalities were all varied and unique. I especially liked Georgia's cats, Angus and Gordy. They were the most psychotic animals I have ever heard of, and I loved to read about their comedic antics. They were relentlessly torturing the poodles next door and decimating Georgia's stockings. I think it was amusing how nobody had any control over them whatsoever.

Furthermore, you could always powerfully hear Georgia's voice. She sounded like an actual 16-year old. I felt like I was there with Georgia in every situation, comprehending every thought that went through her head. I recommend this book to fans of teen-fiction authors that incorporate comedy into their stories. Abstain from reading this book in public areas, as sudden explosive laughter is imminent!

4 out of 5 stars Then He Ate my Boy Entrancers.......2006-05-16

One of the hilarious tales of the British teenager, Georgia Nicolson, est tres amusant. Now that the "love god" is "out of her thoughts, and never to return", there is a new man on her mind. The Itallion Stallion, Masimo. Georgia is very impatient about his return from "Hamburger-a-go-go"(America), and is extatic when her family informs her that this is their new destination for vacation.

The sixth story of the Confessions of Georgia Nicolson is quite funny. I was not surprised it was though. The whole series is. I say, more prays for Louise Rennison, for creating the book that made tears stream down my face with laughter. The story is appropriate for, preferably, the "young adults" out there. The plot was brilliant and so were the characters. Bring on the next story!

unlike all the ppl that says that this book sucks, i say that this book is probably the 2 best. if u dont like this book then why bother writing about it in the first place?!!!?!?!?! this book is about a fourteen year old girl named jennie who was seduce by her substitute teacher named Mr. Johnstohn(if that is how u spell it) he would give comments to get jennie to like him. jennie never relize that he was using her for pictures of hwer partly naked.
if u where disappointed that this was written by beatrice but not an unknown girl well go get a f***** life!!!

3 out of 5 stars bearly there.......2006-03-10

Despite the fact that I'm VERY disapointed Beatrice Sparks wrote this and not an "anonomous teenager" I still found it pretty good. It shows how you can get sucked into that kind of thing, it also makes you aware of that [frustuated] teacher( there's at least one). I say it would have been better if it REALLY written by a teenager!

3 out of 5 stars umm...........2006-02-14

I had buy this book because it sounded very juicy when i read a little info of what it was about. i didnt mind the ratings, so i just baught it; a dissappointment to say the least. [sigh]

1 out of 5 stars The original James Frey .......2006-02-02

Brought to you from the author of Go Ask Alice... yeah, right.

This is probably not the first great hoax in publishing history, but I'm sure it's one of the most successful.

In spite of the fact that the actual source of this book has long been revealed and known, the publishing company continues to brazenly assert that this is a genuine document. It's as ridiculous as the continuing insistence that The Amityville Horror is a true story, too.

It should take any literate adult no more than one and one half pages to determine that this is neither the language nor the syntax of an adolescent/young adult.

It is a known fact that this shameless propoganda was the work of Beatrice Sparks, a Mormom activist who created an entire series of these books, in which children are destroyed by the evils of homosexuality, premarital sex, drug abuse, satanism, etc.

Without diminishing what positive impact this book, or any of the others, may have had on impressionable youth, and without condemning its good intentions (is anyone in favor of having AIDS?), these books are complete rubbish.

Like Mr. Frey, the intentions are not the point.

The point is that these books are being published as nonfiction.

And they are lies.

3 out of 5 stars Okay..........2005-03-07

I have read the following diaries by Beatrice Sparks: Go Ask Alice, Annie's Baby, Kim: Empty Inside, It Happened to Nancy, and Jay's Journal. I didn't think this book was going to disappont me like Kim: Empty Inside did.
This is probaly the 2nd worst book of the series that I've read. The character is boring and it doesn't seem there much character development, for her its sort of like an emotional rollercoaster. She scolds herself for being bad and sad that the teacher is gone, then when he comes back shes all cheery, it just doesn't make sense. I wish I could have seen this diary in its full form and not edited. This book seemed to say the same thing over and over, "I met her Johnstone, we had to act like we didn't like each other..." stuff exactley like that everday when she helped him in summer school. I found it boring. At some point while I was reading it felt as if a chore to just get through it. The most suspenseful part only took me about 7 minutes to read. I would not recommend this, I would get Go Ask Alice, It Happened to Nancy, or Annie's Baby.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Teen Book.......2002-12-09

This is by far the best book that i have read in a long time. It contains all the aspects of the life of a teenager. It is about a Junior/Senior named Jonah and its about how he goes about his everyday life and how different people influence him. He makes a lot of new friends like Posie and Sophie, and many others. The author uses great imagry to describe the characters and it almost feels like u know them personally. After i had read the first book of this trillogy i imidiately ordered the next to see what was going to happen to Jonah. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO IS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 14 AND 17.

5 out of 5 stars Will Jonah get to walk his doggie?.......2002-06-20

I didn't like Thorne's attitude toward sex and girls (he made relationships seem like nothing - a great big soap opera or a game of some sort that he would "win" when the girl agreed to sleep with him) and wondered if he'd get Jonah to change the way he looked at girls. I was worried that book would turn into nothing more than a meaningless string of conquests that left hearts squashed in the dust. But this didn't happen. Instead of copycatting Thorne, I liked how Jonah's views stood in stark contrast to his friend Thorne's. I didn't dislike Thorne quite so much when he and Jonah found a way to continue their friendship. Exposing Thorne's nonchalant girl-hopping and then following it up with Thorne's secret (wouldn't you like to know? Read the book!) and then some of Thorne's feelings (which you'd never guess about) made the story deeper and more real. I think I have it figured out who Northgirl999 is... I wonder if I'm right? I'm worried about Jonah doing the same thing to Posie as his buddy Thorne did. Not that I don't like Sophie, but considering Jonah's fury at how Thorne treated Posie, you'd think he'd be more careful of what he's doing... Also, what is up with Posie? She jumps from guy to guy as easily and quickly as some of the guys in the story, only she has never been portrayed as a cheater. What is she really feeling? Does she really love Jonah, or if another guy came along and got Jonah into trouble with her, would she latch on to the new guy? Hhhhmmmmm...

5 out of 5 stars The Black Book vol 2 Stop, Don't Stop.......2002-05-31

This book is a great book about a teenager dealing with normal teen problems. He goes through a lot of stuff in this book and one of them is that he has to repeat 11th grade. He also just wakes up from a BIG accident that almost killed him. He also gets the girl,(if u read the first book)and Sophie finally calls him. How is he going to juggle them? This is extreme pressure on him, dealing with other teen things. He also does a lot of daydreaming and fantasizing. It is a great book and i suggest all teens to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Jonah Black is back and with more to tell........2002-04-05

Yet again we meet Jonah Black and start to learn more about his life and what problems he has in it.

Jonah is just getting out of the hospital and while he is there he finds that someone has giving his roses there, at first he thinks is Cecily but later on he finds out it wasn't.

Jonah is now having to deal with the fact that Posie is going out with Thorne and he hates that. But Jonah does manage to figure out a way to get Posie and he trys to do that. All the time while he is doing that he still thinking about Sophie.

Finally after Jonah learns some shocking news about Thorne does he tell Thorne about the true reason why he got kicked out of the school.

But the true question still is who is NorthGirl999 and will Jonah ever find out.

This book is a great second book and I can't wait to dive into the 3rd and 4th ones and find out much more about Jonah Black and his life.

It was only a slap. Well, maybe more than one. And maybe Nick used his fist at the end when the anger got out of control. But his girlfriend Caitlin deserved it--hadn't she defied him by singing in the school talent show when he had forbidden her to display herself like that? Even though he'd told her that everybody would laugh at her because she couldn't sing and was a fat slob? Both were lies. Because Caitlin was so beautiful, the only person who understood him. Out of his desperate need for her came all the mean words and the hitting. But now Caitlin's family has procured a restraining order to keep Nick away, and the judge has sentenced him to Mario Ortega's Family Violence class, to sit around every week with six other angry guys who hit their girlfriends. And to write a journal explaining how he got into this mess.

Other teen novels--most strikingly Dreamland by Sarah Dessen--have shown dating violence from the point of view of a young girl trapped in an abusive relationship, but in Breathing Underwater, first-time novelist Alex Flinn tackles the difficult task of making us understand, if not sympathize with, the motivation of a violent young man. The story, like Rob Thomas's stylistically similar Rats Saw God, proceeds in two different time frames: the journal in which Nick relives the course of his tender but stormy love affair with Caitlin and the time after the restraining order, in which a desperate and friendless Nick struggles to understand and overcome his anger. This extraordinarily moving novel is highly relevant reading for all young men in our violence-prone society. (Ages 13 and older) --Patty Campbell

Book Description

Like father,
like son

Intelligent, popular, handsome, and wealthy, sixteen-year-old Nick Andreas is pretty much perfect -- on the outside, at least. What no one knows -- not even his best friend -- is the terror that Nick faces every time he is alone with his father. Then he and Caitlin fall in love, and Nick thinks his problems are over. Caitlin is the one person who he can confide in. But when things start to spiral out of control, Nick must face the fact that he's gotten more from his father than green eyes and money.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "I Think It's About Being a Loser".......2007-06-27

The first novel by Alex Flinn tackles a somewhat normal subject in an abnormal way. She takes the road less traveled: Writing about dating violence through the eyes of the abuser. Nick Andreas is a teenager who seems perfect. He's a football player, he lives in an upper-class neighborhood, and he's got a beautiful girlfriend, Cailtin. He's got perfect, popular friends and a perfect life, right? Wrong.

Atleast, most of this seemed true until he got out of control one day with Caitlin. And another day, and another day. Finally, Caitlin has enough when Nick beats her badly for participating in a talent show against his will. She calls the relationship off, and files for a restraining order against Nick. He's not to talk to her in any way. The judge orders him to attend anger management classes for six months and keep a journal explaining how things went from when he first tried to get together with Caitlin to when she broke up with him. Each entry was to be 500 words per week.

At first, Nick didn't think he really had a problem. He doesn't belong in the anger management class with the other psychos. But as Nick takes the classes and writes in his journal, he begins to realize that he does have a problem. Through listening to the other guys talk in class, he learns that he's no different than them. He's quick to assume his girlfriend is cheating when she doesn't show up on time and he tries to control aspects of her life. He finally accepts his problem and even goes back to anger management classes even when his time was up.

I think the best thing about this book is the POV through which it's told. Telling the story by the abuser and not the abused is a unique twist. You see firsthand how he is affected by his own actions and how he comes to terms with losing Caitlin. You also see how he reacts to his father's constant abuse and controlling behavior as well. Flinn's job was to make the reader understand why Nick was abusive without excusing his actions. In my opinion, the job was well done.

I would recommend this book to any teenager looking for a good read. It has a good plot, believable characters, and an ending that's not so happy, which adds more to the reality of the story. I even think some teenage boys would be able to learn a little bit from it. It's an excellent novel for both genders, however. Go ahead and pick it up.

3 out of 5 stars Breathing Underwater.......2007-06-14

By Alex Flinn

Nick is rich and popular and gets along with just about everyone. But no one sees what is hiding behind those traits; his father hits him. When he meets his g/f Caitlin he thinks that she will solve all of his problems, but little does he know that his possessiveness and jealousy will quickly turn into control and rage. Heir relationship quickly results in a restraining order and mandatory sentence to attend a family violence class.
My favorite part was when she was fat and became skinny, and Nick uses her low self esteem on his raging outbursts.
You have to take responsibility for your own actions even if that means giving something up in return. Nick has to learn that he does have an anger problem and he let it go too far. Now he has lost his girlfriend.
The author retells the actual story in a different perspective and tells the true story and what is going on in the present. It has really good dialogue as if it were a true story. Anyone should read this book because it really sounds like a teenager wrote it.

3 out of 5 stars Abusive Relationship.......2007-04-23

Nick is in a courtroom, sitting with his father, who is exceptionally angry. Nick is there because his ex-girlfriend, Caitlin, wants to get a restraining order against him. He doesn't really understand why she is doing this. He really only hit her once, not like his father hits him on a regular basis. It's not like he really abused her or she should be afraid of him or anything. After all, he loves her.

Caitlin is granted the restraining order, and Nick is ordered to go to anger management classes and to write a journal of his thoughts about himself or his relationship every day. He is reluctant at first, but then he misses Caitlin so much that he really starts to enjoy writing about the good times that the two of them had when they were dating. But through his journal and by interacting with the others in his anger management class, Nick begins to see things in a whole new light. Will he finally see the error of his ways, or is he destined to treat women poorly his whole life?

I liked the evolution of Nick's character, and the ways he saw himself through the eyes of others when he started hanging around with Leo and saw the way Leo treated his girlfriend. I was frustrated when Nick acted like he hadn't done anything wrong, though, and he couldn't even see a problem when he was writing about the awful things he had said or done. I also didn't like the character of Tom; I thought he should have been a stronger force in Nick's life all along, trying to figure out what was going on with him instead of dropping him.

4 out of 5 stars Generations of anger.......2007-04-11

What goes around, comes around. Nick's father hit him. Nick hit Caitlin. Caitlin got a restraining order. Okay. So it seems simple, but that's the basis on which this interesting book is built on. We see that Nick is troubled by everything that's happened and through his stories of the past and what he deals with now, we see that he's struggling to cope.

It's strange to get a story where we view the abuser as opposed to the abused. It's easy to sympathize with a girl whose boyfriend hits her, but to like and sympathize with a boy who hit his girlfriend because she did something he didn't want her to do? It seems impossible, but here, in "Breathing Underwater", we do exactly that. At first it seems counter-intuitive, but by the end it's so "ohh", and I was able to understand Nick.

So what goes around comes around. And now Nick has to sit in classes that teach him why he shouldn't hit his girlfriend. It takes him a while, but soon Nick realizes what it is. He sees the situation from the eyes of an observer and he understands.

What I liked about this book was that it showed the other side of the relationship (the guy side). It made it more interesting than another victim story. I liked how it was done, but I think that it was too short, with not enough information and feeling.

Recommended.

Seeing this boy slowly become like his father is some of the most gut wrenching drama you'll be exposed to in a long time. Such a powerful book that actually brought me to tears. It really hurts, and sometimes when putting book down you reflect on your very actions in life and are inspired by the constant punches it throws at you. Very good book and should not be missed. Traditionally, series fiction for teens is light, fluffy, and more likely to be found in a beach bag than on a required summer reading list. But lately, series fiction is starting to take itself a bit more, well, seriously, a good example being The Black Book: Diary of a Teenage Stud by the mysterious Jonah Black. A projected trilogy, the true author of Jonah's fictitious journal is hiding behind the Black name, apparently not yet willing to take credit for this Twin Peak-ish, literary sex tale. In the first volume, "Girls, Girls, Girls," Jonah reveals his difficulty in separating his rich imaginary life with the real world. Between writing about his steamy, disturbing encounters with the beautiful and possibly made-up Sophie, Jonah also documents some cold, hard facts about himself: he was expelled from his Pennsylvania boarding school, his former Florida high school is forcing him to repeat 11th grade, and his mom is a scary New Age sex therapist who writes books like Hello Penis! Hello, Vagina! Who wouldn't retreat into a fantasy world? But as Jonah's writing progresses, he begins to drop hints about his sordid Pennsylvania past, and savvy readers will be able to start to put together the clues of his unexplained expulsion. It isn't likely that Jonah's quirkily complex diary will entice the usual Sweet Valley High series reader, but it is sure to intrigue teen fans of oddball writers such as Daniel Pinkwater and Douglas Adams. It's weird, but this darkly humorous mystery is definitely worth it. (Ages 14 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Inner Life of a Teenaged Guy.......2007-06-14

This is the first book in a series about Jonah, a high school student. The books are his diary, describing what his life is like. For the past two years he has been living with his father and his father's new wife, and attending an exclusive private school. Now he is back living with his mother and his sister, attending the same public school he used to attend. He was kicked out of the private school before he could take his final exams, so instead of being a senior with all of his friends this year, he is still a junior.

Things aren't great in Jonah's life. His friends have all changed but they insist that he hasn't changed at all. He isn't sure where he fits in and doesn't trust them enough to tell them what happened to cause his expulsion from private school. Jonah is upset about being a junior, but there doesn't seem to be anything he can do about it. And to make matters worse, his mother is too concerned with her new life as a sex expert for teens, with a book and a radio show, to worry about Jonah's problems. Jonah dreams and writes about a girl, Sophie, from his private school, but he doesn't ever say what exactly she meant to him. Will Jonah be able to conquer all of his problems and fit in with his classmates?

I liked most of the characters in this story, especially Honey. I thought she was really cool, although her relationship with her brother didn't seem all that realistic. I liked reading about Jonah's confusion and lack of self confidence. I would hope that in the future books of this series it will become clear that Jonah isn't the only one who feels that way.

I didn't love the character of Jonah himself; I found him a little annoying, and it was hard for me to get used to the fact that there was no transition between what was really happening and what was going on in his fantasy world. I also didn't like that this book left the reader hanging on so many points, almost forcing everyone to read the next book.

4 out of 5 stars The Black Book...........2006-09-30

Um... what can I say about this book that no one has said before? It was good, I guess. But I never met any guy who kept a diary, so it was odd. I don't know.
It was a good book though.

5 out of 5 stars Girls Girls Girls.......2005-11-02

The book starts out in Florida where Jonah Black is living with his Mom, Dr. Black and sister, Honey. Jonah is in Florida one week before school starts because he came back from living with his dad in Pennsylvania. So Jonah gets mad and starts writing letters to the school districts and to town officials, to try to see if he can become a senior since he had good grades and it was not fair that he had to be a junior all over again when he was suppose to be a senior. So through out the book he fights his way to become a senior and is able to get the district chamber to look at the situation and try to get him to be a senior again. To find out if Jonah became a senior u must read the book and follow along his "ladies man" life-style.

5 out of 5 stars Jonah Black... who are you?.......2005-08-01

The mysterious first part of this series. the book is amazingly good, keeps you guessing.

At the very beginning of the book Jonah comes back to Florida, his hometown. HE got kicked out from boarding school, becasue of an "accident". What accident wat it? Jonah keeps quiet about it. He keeps daydreaming about a mysterious girl called Sophie. He daydreams about her so much, sometimes it's even hard to tell if he's daydreaming or if it's the reality he's describing. At the beginning of the book, I was very lost and confused, I got soo many questions about this book. But that's what makes it so good. The mysteriousness of it. Keeps you guessing till.. the end of the series (lmao, jk.. but almost the end of it though)

I really got into the book. Jonah Black writes just wonderfully, it can totally absorb the reader. You just have to keep on reading and reading. I read this part in like 1 day.
AMAZING!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-06-03

Jonah Black is a senior in high school who has been forced to move back to his mother's house in Florida when he is kicked out of private school in Pennsylvania. Jonah's mother is a middle-aged "sexpert" who has her own radio show, telling people to be "nice to themselves" through sex and believes that all of Jonah's problems come from a lack of sex in his life. Honey, Jonah's genius sister, is also a senior. On the first day of school, Joah finds out that he is being forced to go through his junior year again because he didn't finish his senior year "in good standing". He has two good friends; Thorne the smooth operator and Posie the surfer goddess. It was obvious that he is in love with Posie, but hides it from her.

Fantasy and reality are one to Jonah and he switches between them quickly and easily. Most of his fantasies were easy to detect as fake and stereotypical of teenage boys, but left me wondering what is actually wrong with Jonah Black. Every few pages, he slips into fantasies about a girl named Sophie. Every time he is in therapy, he sees her come in and tell him not to tell the psychologist what happened in Pennsylvania. He answers her (imaginary) questions outloud.

But through all of his fantasies and all that is happening in his reality, he never explains what happened in private school to get him kicked out, or even who Sophie is. For a lot of the book, I wondered if Sophie was even real. I don't think this book is as light and happy as many critics have made it up to be; I think it is a dark and intimate look into a incredibly imaginative, if not slightly disturbed, teenage boy's mind.

This book was so good, I finished it in a few hours. The end of this book is a total cliffhanger. (Who is Northgirl999? What did Sophie do to Jonah? Will Jonah call Sophie? Will Jonah tell Posie how he feels about her? Will Jonah talk to the Cheese Girl again?) I can't wait to read the rest of them.

Book Description

From the winner of the Michael L. Printz Award and the Carnegie Medal, a work of astonishing intimacy and depth

Using a pillow book as her form, nineteen-year-old Cordelia Kenn sets out to write out her life for her unborn daughter. What emerges is a portrait of an extraordinary girl, who writes frankly of love, sex, poetry, nature, faith, and of herself in the world. Her thoughts range widely: on Shakespeare and breasts, periods and piano playing, friendship and trees, consciousness and sleep, and much more besides. As she writes of William Blacklin, the boy she chooses as her first lover, or Julie, the teacher who encourages her spiritual life, Cordelia maddens, fascinates, and ultimately seduces the reader. This is a character never to be forgotten from a writer at the height of his powers.

5 out of 5 stars Great read for young adults/adults.......2007-08-17

In the beginning, I started the book with no expectations, only to be amazed by the end of it. Not only is this story extremely realistic in the adolescent sense, it also had many other lessons to teach about life in general. It was beautifully written, funny, witty, and I'm glad that I picked this book up, despite its thickness (which may ultimately seem a little intimidating to impatient readers). But read it!! You will not be disappointed...

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2007-08-13

I bought this book straight out of the book store, mainly because I liked the cover (I'll admit it I'm very shallow when it comes to book covers), description and sheer size. I'm not a fan of light reading.
I honestly didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. Getting over the lenghty sexual passages, I discovered a character more real than I'd ever encountered. It was like a book made of my thoughts and emotions. Of course, this might have something to do with the fact I'm a sixteen year old girl. In short I adored it, the prose, everything. The kind of book you can open to any page and be entertained. You really have to digest it, though, if you read it from start to finish.
I cried, I laughed, it was everything a book should be.

3 out of 5 stars This is All.......2007-07-18

"This is All: The Pillow Book of Cordelia Kenn" is a collection of thoughts and recollections put together by Cordelia Kenn for her unborn daughter. Cordelia relates her experiences, her beliefs, her likes, and her dislikes, touching all subjects. She writes of sex, Shakespeare, love, books, poetry, friendship, food, and spirituality (just to name a few) with a very wise perspective for someone of her age, while narrating events in her life.

It sounds boring (and sometimes it is)--reading somebody else's ramblings about why they like this or that, but it is surprisingly entertaining. Not only does Cordelia ramble on about these things, interrupting the "plot", but she does so for 800 pages! (Now, just imagine the sheer amount of paper, writer's cramp, and pens it would take for Cordelia to handwrite 800 typewritten pages. Aidan Chambers only knows where she found the time.)

Cordelia writes like an extremely intelligent, mature person, but she almost never acts like one. Her actions and the maturity of her writing and thoughts are hardly consistent. Cordelia can be very annoying because she says one thing and does another.

There was a 200 page section in this book that was extremely irritating: it consisted of two different storylines that switched every other page--mid-sentence. I don't understand why Aidan Chambers did that: it was irritating and confusing. If he wanted the two storylines side by side, he could have at least switched back and forth at convenient times.

Also, this book is extremely descriptive about sex and periods. It got quite nasty at some points, and was unnecessary.

While I disagree with most of Cordelia's philosophy, I still enjoyed reading her point of view. If you intend to read this book, read it to the last page or not at all. The ending makes the book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow........2007-04-18

This was an awesome book. Read it. After that having been said,...I am a pretty advanced reader, and am always looking for good books that are interesting and entertaining, and present a good challenge. This is not easy. Also, as I am a speed demon, books that are huge. Adding that, finding my definition of a "good book" is almost impossible. This book, though, meets all the requirements. It is very different in the way it was written (the mother, Cordelia Kenn, is writing to her unborn daughter, writing in the present, and also using her "pillow books", books similar to journals Cordelia wrote in her teenage years, and the entire book is a mixture of the two, and you hardly ever know which is which), and even has one section where you have to read two different stories, or memories, or writings. Whatever you want to call them. The left hand side is not chronological, and has a couple lists, seperate memories, that kind of random thing. The right side is a chronological sequence of events in her life, as are most books. This is All has a lot about how she loves Will, but it is not how she adores him, or her huge crush on him. It is her relationship with him, and how it grows and progresses, and is nothing like the stories involving a girl's crush on a popular boy, and how hopelessly obsessed she is. Will is in the book a lot simply because he is a huge part of her life.

Also, this book fascinated me and surprised me with many very interesting little sections about things in life, that got me thinking. For instance, sleep. I can't explain it as well as the author, but it was very thought provoking and presented an entirely new view. The book is, overall, wonderful. I loved it. However, if you are not an advanced reader or an adult, I recommend you do not read this book. It is for older readers, because of the topics and the ideas. You will not understand it, and will walk away confused and thinking it is a horrible book. But when you are a better reader, definitley check this book out. It's great. I loved it, and the author showed a lot of ingenuity. I would highly recommend reading this sometime in your life!

5 out of 5 stars Utterly realistic.......2007-01-22

There are two complaints people seem to make about this book - that it is too long, and that they don't believe that what happens to Cordelia and her reactions are realistic.

To the first, if you are a lazy reader, sure, it is a very long book, but everything in it is there for a reason, is an essential part of what makes Cordelia a completely real person.

Which is my answer to the second complaint - Cordelia is completely real. If you can't realate to Cordelia I'm sorry you were never in love at a young age. I can only imagine that those critics have lost all touch with who they were as teenagers and simply can't temember what it was like. I find it remarkable that a seventy year old man could write such an incredibly accurate book about a teenage girl. This book runs eerily parallel to my life at that age, and I reacted much the same, even down to having an affair with an older man, so I can only repeat: these things happen and young girls do feel like Cordelia.
This book is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Georgia Nicolson is a blast!.......2007-07-22

Georgia Nicolson has become one of my favorite nutty characters. I love the books but this is not the best in the series. Yet it is hilarious, tremendously funny and it is impossible to have a bad day with the looney characters and crazy stories Louise Rennison brings to life. I am completely crazy about Angus, that wild and impossible cat.

5 out of 5 stars Dancing in my Nuddy-Pants.......2007-05-23

Georgia is back aqain! This series is hilarious! In this book Georgia and Robbie are still together, but Robbie isn't around that much. He's on tour with his band, The Stiff Dylans, in Hamburger-a-go-go-land, a.k.a the United States. Georgia is stuck in Great Britain. Georgia's family is still totally embarrasing, but they are really funny. You should definitely read this book and the rest of the series. These books have something funny written on every page. I couldn't put it down!

5 out of 5 stars Dancing In My Nuddy-Pants.......2006-11-01

I read the book Dancing In My Nuddy Pants, by Louise Rennison. This book is about a girl named Georgia Nicholson. She lives in England with her mom, dad, little sister Libby, and oddly large cat named Angus. This story is about the life of a normal teenage girl living in England.

There were many good parts in this book, but if I had to choose a favorite then I'd choose the time when she tripped "Elvis" with a wheelbarrow. Once Georgia was outside of "Elvis`" hut and she decided to pull a brutally mean joke on him. She placed a wheelbarrow outside of his hut and then she went to his window and screamed frantically like something was wrong. This caused "Elvis" too run out his door and trip over the wheelbarrow that Georgia put there, but Georgia got what she deserved and was suspended for a while.

I've read many books but Dancing In My Nuddy Pants was just a book that I could not put down. If you are seeking a hilarious book that you will love then I highly suggest reading this book. Georgia taught me things that I should never do, and so things that I should do. If this sounds interesting you might also want to read the first too, and then you can get this book to resume with the tale of Georgia Nicholson. But don't be sad when it's over because there are 7 books in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Georgia is back.......2005-10-06

Georgia is back with another astonishing sequel, Dancing in My Nuddy Pants. You will not be disappointed in this hilarious come back. If you are in grades 7-9 you will love the humor of this self-absorbed teen. In this novel there aren't chapters there are diary entries. My favorite diary entire is the one that talks about the neighbor's cat getting pregnant. The neighbors came over and accused Georgia's cat. Georgia's dad is hilarious and says many hilarious things about it. This is a pretty good novel except for the fact that is very confusing. She is British and speaks some British in the book. It's pretty hard to understand but besides that it is a hilarious and very exciting book.

4 out of 5 stars dancing naked?? funny.......2005-08-11

Again Georgia is back. She is still having trouble with her red bottom but she is learning to cope with it. She learns the way of the horn (how much you fancy someone) and decides she has the general horn for Dave the L. (so that explains why she keeps snogging him on accident J). She is still going out with Robbie though and later in the story to Georgia's dismay it is reviled that Robbie must go to Australia for a year L. I am so glad that there is a sequel to this story because this book leaves some questions unanswered.
