5 out of 5 stars Very depressing.......2007-10-16

This book resonated so strongly and was the most informative of any I have read (and ive read them all), but it lacked all hope. You really have to personally have experienced all the situations described to understand how words like "manipulative" and the characterization of bp in general would impact someone struggling so hard to make sense of irrational behaviors that in fact do seem to conform to such motives. I felt so demeaned and hopeless, completely objectified. It was overwhelming.

1 out of 5 stars Chapter 1.......2007-09-26

I don't know if this book will be any help to you but it was NOT to me...

My wife only read the 1st chapter, "I HATE YOU..." and then she stopped...

I think she found her answer :)

4 out of 5 stars Great Insightful Book.......2007-08-29

This book was received in the requested time frame. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to get this book, read it, review it and tell others what I discovered.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-08-28

I wish I had known about this book years ago. Knowing how to put up boundaries with a BPD is very valuable. It is right on target.

4 out of 5 stars I Hate you, Don't Leave Me.......2007-06-10

When I first read this book, I had to stop after each chapter..sometimes after each paragraph to cry. At last, there were people who understood and felt what I had been going through my whole life. It was such a relief. The only down side is that the book is a bit dated.

After a few weeks, I got up the courage to show the book to my husband and suggest that he read it. After all, I'm the one with BPD. When I showed him the book, he said, "Oh, our marriage therapist gave me this book to help me understand you better." My only regret is that I didn't learn about this book sooner.

Praise for Book Yourself Solid

"Lead generation and conversion is the heart of any marketing enterprise, and Michael Port's ingenious and practical system is among the best I've seen. Read this book and transform your business!"
—Michael E. Gerber, founder and Chairman, E-Myth Worldwide, author of The E-Myth Revisited

"Do your homework! This is not a conceptual, theoretical look at how to succeed as a service professional. Instead, it's just what you need if you're stuck and you'd rather invest in your future (by doing the right kind of work) than complain about it later."
—Seth Godin, author of All Marketers Are Liars and Permission Marketing

"Going out on your own can be scary. But this book is a welcome antidote to that fear. It brims with savvy advice and nearly overflows with practical, hands-on exercises. Once you absorb the wisdom in these pages, you'll be ready, willing, and eager to fashion a more rewarding work life. Michael Port is the guy to call if you're tired of thinking small."
—Daniel H. Pink, author of A Whole New Mind and Free Agent Nation

"If you're even slightly uncomfortable with the idea of networking, marketing, or selling, this is the book for you. Book Yourself Solid gives you everything you need to fill your business with ideal clients. Before you're even finished reading the book, you'll be inspired to take action!"
—Ivan R. Misner, PhD, founder and CEO, BNI, coauthor of Masters of Networking

3 out of 5 stars Not for salespeople but for consultants and other business people who need to get "projects" booked.......2007-10-07

This book isn't as bad as some reviewers have written or as good as others have raved about. This book isn't for salespeople and because of that I was disappointed. This book is for professionals that have to "book themselves," such as public speakers, lawyers, accountants and the like. In some ways if you don't already know what this book teaches you better get a job. However, as the E-Myth points out there are plenty of people that are good at what they do but are clueless about how to get themselves business. If you fall into this category this is a good book to read and implement.

Port's book is long and at times wordy but a fun and easy read. There are diamonds here but you have to mine through a lot of ore to get at them. The book is well written and conversational. I can see why Mr. Port has a successful career. This book is perhaps a good first read if you're considering starting your own business or want to get more clients. For a solid and measurable program I recommend "Get Clients Now" by C. J. Hayden or "Get Business to Come to You" by Sarah and Paul Edwards.

5 out of 5 stars Solid marketing book!.......2007-10-05

This book provides a great marketing overview. It leads the reader through finding a target market, branding, being selective in choosing clients (some fresh insights for many readers here!), presenting yourself and business to prospective clients, web marketing, networking, publicity and more. Your marketing structure and systems will NOT look the same - and thus your results will not be the same - if you read this book and put its numerous tips and advice to work for you.

Beyond sales and marketing professionals, this is a great resource for any business person who markets their service or products themselves - including small business owners, consultants and trainers, and small professional firms (financial planners, lawyers, dentists, etc.). This is especially true for those who are just starting out and those who do not like to market themselves (you know who you are!).

Michael's emphasis on personal integrity really appealed to me (if you don't like a client, you will sacrifice your integrity by putting yourself in a position of not being able to give your full effort). His process is about building a steady pipeline of highly-qualified prospects that you will ENJOY working with and to whom you can provide full value.

All in all, a solid book. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars marketing made easy.......2007-09-01

Michael Port gets it. His plan is practical and visionary. He has created a way for any service business to get results. I have been telling everyone I know about this book!

5 out of 5 stars A Essential Book For Serious Business People.......2007-08-28

Book Description

Is this the way love is supposed to feel?

• Does the man you love assume the right to control how you live and behave?
• Have you given up important activities or people to keep him happy?
• Is he extremely jealous and possessive?
• Does he switch from charm to anger without warning?
• Does he belittle your opinions, your feelings, or your accomplishments?
• Does he withdraw love, money, approval, or sex to punish you?
• Does he blame you for everything that goes wrong in the relationship?
• Do you find yourself “walking on eggs” and apologizing all the time?

If the questions here reveal a familiar pattern, you may be in love with a misogynist — a man who loves you, yet causes you tremendous pain because he acts as if he hates you.

In this superb self-help guide, Dr. Susan Forward draws on case histories and the voices of men and women trapped in these negative relationships to help you understand your man’s destructive pattern and the part you play in it.

She shows how to break the pattern, heal the hurt, regain your self-respect, and either rebuild your relationship or find the courage to love a truly loving man.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not only applies to heterosexual couples...........2007-09-11

This book was especially fascinating for me because it describes the same dynamics that can occur in gay relationships. Unfortunately, abuse and humiliation goes beyond heterosexual men.

5 out of 5 stars Helped me........2007-09-10

Fantastic book, helped me to understand what I am currently going through in my life. Would recommend to anyone in a relationship who feels they just can't seem to get thier point across to thier significatn other.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but there is one better.......2007-03-31

This is a good book about men who hurt women. I found it very useful, but I did find one better (on Amazon, in fact) called "Why Does he do That?" The subtitle is "Inside the minds of angry and controlling men." I think, for the experience the author (of "Men Who Hate Women...") has had, she does quite well and it makes a good pre-read for the other one.Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men

5 out of 5 stars HELPED ME UNDERSTAND.......2007-01-10

This book is excellent, giving women (who have or are being abused emotionally) an understanding of the thoughts and motives that direct this type of abuse.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me realize that I wasn't crazy!.......2006-08-11

My relationship with my ex-husband was abusive, to say the least, but did not seem to manifest the typical patterns of domestic violence. At the time, I was a graduate student with strong ambitions, and an even stronger will...but I couldn't understand why my ex-husband seemed to take pleasure in humiliating me, undermining my accomplishments, and trying to convince me that I was crazy (traits that he only began to exhibit after we were married)! Forward's book gave me the strength to heal, and the courage to pursue a divorce from my abusive ex-husband. This book provided me with, not only theorietical explanations for my ex-husband's mood swings and bizarre behavior, but also a foundation for me to attain some clarity about my toxic relationship patterns. The symptoms and case studies of the "misogynist" eerily described my ex-husband, as well as, every man that I have had a romantic relationship with! Thus, some of the material can be difficult to accept about yourself and your relationships, but this book is essential if you are ready to put an end to the abuse

If you are a mother and many of your conversations with your teenage daughter begin with a rolling of eyes, move into shrieked insults, and end with a door slam, I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You! could save you both. As Roni Cohen-Sandler and Michelle Silver illustrate, even if you often seem to be living on two different planets, conflict does not have to define your relationship.

Cohen-Sandler, a clinical psychologist specializing in issues of women and adolescent girls, and Silver, senior editor of Girls' Life magazine, have done mothers a great service with this thoroughly researched book. Their main point is simple: arguments are bound to occur, but if approached correctly, confrontation can actually lead to deeper mutual understanding and a stronger mother-daughter bond. Consistently working through battles also demonstrates a sense of constancy that will offer good lessons for future relationships. Through case studies, exercises, and detailed scenarios, the authors describe the most effective ways to communicate about such loaded topics as dating, sexuality, drugs and alcohol, and peer pressure, paying particular attention to the "classic battle starters": the state of her bedroom, her clothing, and her makeup and jewelry choices. Other in-depth chapters focus on the right and wrong ways to respond to verbal attacks and the importance of choosing battles wisely. Some of their advice will not be easy to follow, especially when the fight is on, but if some effort is exerted, these tips should help mothers and daughters not only survive, but even enjoy, the teen years.

Book Description

Almost without exception, the teen years are tumultuous for both girls and their mothers. Teen girls, who are socialized to stifle their anger and avoid confrontation, frequently take out their frustration on their mothers as the only safe and available targets. The good news is that with patience and the right guidance, mothers can transform the teenage years into positive ones and enrich the mother- daughter relationship. "I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You!" combines the expertise of a clinical psychologist (who has worked with women and adolescent girls for more than twenty years) with that of a senior editor at a leading teen magazine. The book demonstrates how mother-daughter friction during adolescence, managed creatively, empowers girls by teaching them invaluable skills and can even foster intimacy. Discussion of social, emotional, cultural, and psychological issues is interwoven with the voices of mothers and daughters in case studies that are illuminating and reassuring. In the wake of widely popular books exposing the perils adolescent girls face, "I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You!" provides mothers with much-needed practical strategies to help their daughters grow into emotionally healthy and capable adults. At the same time, women will encourage loving and lifelong connections with their daughters.

5 out of 5 stars What a relief!.......2007-03-28

This past summer my husband and I were devastated with our 16 yr old daughter's sudden behavior change. It was horrible. I went on Amazon to try and find some books on parenting teens in today's day and found this one. What a relief! As I was reading the case studies I cried, I swore they were some of my experiences word for word. If anything this book gave me comfort in knowing that I was not crazy and I was not alone. It also gave examples of the appropriate way to respond to different situations(in addition to counseling and a lot of praying). I've since recommended this book to our pastor and two other mothers who had sudden similar experiences. This is a must read for any mother with a teenage daughter!

4 out of 5 stars highly recommended for parents of teen girls.......2006-06-03

I really learned alot from this book & plan on reading it again. It helped me adjust my parenting techniques with my 13 year old daughter and also made me feel better about myself. I have told many people to read this book, it is very well written and really helps a parent with the adolecent girl.

1 out of 5 stars Great advice if your kids perfect already!.......2003-02-19

I wouldn't have bought this book if I wasn't dealing with a VERY defiant, and manipulative teenage daughter--so when this book assumes that I can just say the right thing and everything will be fine, is an absolute joke! This advice would be great if it worked as simply as the book says. But if you already have a tough kid, these tips are NOT going to suddenly make her see the logic in my rules. Kids don't care about the explaination of why it's wrong to dress trashy or wear too much makeup...they want what they want. This book assumes that your kid obeys you in the first place! The title really drew me in--I thought that I had finally found a book that understood what I am going through. But it's just another below-average parenting book with a catchy title!

5 out of 5 stars No, I'm not going crazy!.......2000-12-20

I thought I going was nuts, not knowing how to parent my pre-teen. At last, a book to let me know I was not going crazy by myself, that it is perfectly normal what we are going through, why I as the mom am the target and spring board for her growing up. It also gives ideas on how to rethink parenting, your responses to issues. It shows why "I" the mom am the only one, cuz I'm the closest one to her, that she is 'experimenting with life' off of. I don't feel so alone, I'm okay, and can see why I get the backwash, and the testing. I highly recommend this book to other moms and also dads too, so they can understand the battle while they watch from the sidelines.

4 out of 5 stars best book re teenage girls.......2000-03-08

At a time when I was ready to give up on being a mother till my teen "grew up", this book was a godsend. My feelings of desperation, confusion, loss, and wondering where I went wrong were all validated. I have already started trying techniques recommended. Even if it doesn't change my daughter, my perception has changed so that I'm better able to cope. Very readable (not a bunch of jargon) I'd recommend it to any mother of a teenage girl. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because there were no illustrations. Of course, as an adult I don't have to have them, but I like them. Sometimes a well-placed cartoon helps to illustrate a point. It may be the authors thought illustrations are inappropriate for their book.

Book Description

Target. Observe. Ridicule.

You run into them every day—the striped-shirt guy, the karaoke master, the dude with a pencil-thin beard, the guy who won’t shut up about his fantasy football team—characters who annoy, irritate, and incense us all. Based on the wildly popular essay on ThePhatPhree.com by Mike Polk, this book is a look inside the heads of the most infuriating douchebags on Earth.

It’s the best of ThePhatPhree.com plus more than fifty all-new, hilarious pieces written by some of your favorite writers from this site.

Everyone’s (Least) Favorite, The Striped-Shirt Guy …
I will valet tonight! I will treat the valet with contempt and make sure that he knows that I am superior to him. I will tell him, “Take it easy on the brakes, champ”! When I do not hook up with a girl at the club, I will say that the place is “full of skanks” and wait in line at another bar, only to strike out again!

Your “Cool” High School Teacher …
Here are some things I allow in my class that other teachers don’t: eating, drinking,
swearing, dancing, smoking, fighting, cell phones, Texas hold ’em, iPods, and
sex. Like my Goo Goo Dolls tee? Anyone else here down with the Dolls? No? Me
either. I’m just wearing it as a goof.

The Guy with Amazing Taste in Music …
Personally, I haven’t listened to the radio in fifteen years. If you have ever heard a band
on the radio, then I can assure you, I am not a fan. I stopped listening to American music about ten years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Laughed till it hurt.......2007-09-13

There are people in this world you hate to bump into; some you hate just for the pure enjoyment in mocking these jerks. Most of the sections were right on the money and it makes your dislike for some people, highlighted. Excellent read

5 out of 5 stars Look at this review. LOOK AT IT!!!.......2007-05-14

This book has finally brought high comedy to toilet time, and I couldn't be happier.

4 out of 5 stars Poser Smackdowns.......2007-04-27

This is a spin off of the Jerry Seinfeld sly shtick; observational humor, as in pointing out the idiot posers and annoying things in life that we all love to hate. The look at me crowd wants attention, and these writers are more than happy to satisfy their narcissist craving, and spew endless hilarious comments behind their back. I recognize a bunch of characters in here that I also have a field day talking about in clubs over the years. This has 73 essays written, some are great, some fall flat, some are written from the female point of view. A great bathroom book, along with I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell.

5 out of 5 stars To be Read Aloud. In a Group........2007-04-22

This is a rare breed of book that can be group activity. If taken as monologues of characters, then it may be read aloud in a circle of friends around a coffee table.
With the proper 'cast', the humor is amplified tenfold. Highly recommended, and completely hysterical.

4 out of 5 stars Accurate and witty!.......2007-03-28

This book is a quick read and then can remain on your shelf as a quick reference to help you identify the various jerks you encounter on a daily basis. Each "person" is described by a title that covers either all or the most ridiculous aspects of their character: "The 'Cool' Teacher" and "I'm the Karaoke Master!" for instance. Each character takes two pages for their own dialog with the reader, exhibiting everything you love to hate about them. This book will provide you many great laughs.

ASIN: 0814409156

Book Description

Quietly seething...secretly resenting...and ultimately affecting performance, employees' negative feelings toward their managers can lurk beneath the surface of even the most pleasant-seeming work relationships. These issues, if gone unchecked, can result in organizational catastrophe. To find out what's really going on, the authors surveyed more than 50,000 employees in 65 organizations of all types and sizes, and discovered the 30 main causes of ill will. This book provides solutions for these fundamental symptoms of employee-manager discomfort, including employees' sense that:

* they're being treated like children

* their contributions aren't respected

* their manager doesn't listen to them

* senior managers are incompetent

* they lack the resources and training they need to do their jobs well

* they get insufficient feedback

* their pay isn't fairly linked to job performance

* they are burdened by heavy workloads or inflexible schedules.

Featuring real-life examples, this eye-opening book empowers managers to make their workplaces more productive, congenial, and satisfying for their people and for themselves.

Over 50,000 employees tell why company morale and productivity are low and loyalty nonexistent in 30 Reasons Employees Hate Their Managers: What Your People May Be Thinking and What You Can Do About It. In synthesizing the surveys of over 50,000, this book helps pinpoint common problem areas, solutions which apply to the real world and work, and insights on the psychology of these solutions. A focus on each issue and how to resolve it lends practical analysis to the matter, making this a top pick recommended for both managers and business libraries seeking to quickly identify problems and enact changes based not upon time-consuming trial-and-error, but tested real-world experience.

This book will be helpful to any manager. Bruce Katcher identifies organizational vulnerabilities that are often unknown to managers and executives. Each of the 30 chapters offers psychological insights and practical solutions to management problems from an outstanding organizational psychologist. I believe that Bruce Katcher's book can be a spring-board for the careers of readers. It presents valuable lessons that could take a life time to learn.

4 out of 5 stars sensible workplace solutions.......2007-06-11

The fact is that most employees don't really hate their managers. But lots of them are frustrated. In this glass-half-empty book, veteran organizational psychologist Bruce L. Katcher plumbs the survey research he has gathered over almost two decades to distill the 30 biggest frustrations of working men and women, including managers. More importantly, for each frustration he cites, Katcher offers up solutions that are as easy to implement as they are sensible. The wonder is that solutions like these are not more widely practiced. With books like this pointing the way, maybe one day they will be.

Book Description

This book reveals the origin of self-hate, how self-hate works, how to identify it, and how to go beyond it. It provides examples of some of the forms self-hate takes, including taking blame but not credit, holding grudges, and trying to be perfect, and explores the many facets of self-hate, including its role in addiction, the battering cycle, and the illusion of control. After addressing these factors, it illustrates how a meditation practice can be developed and practiced in efforts to free oneself from self-hating beliefs.

Cheri Huber has put into a clear, understandable book everything I've been trying to teach my psychotherapy clients. It's one of the books I've been recommending on a regular basis ever since I read it. 5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read.......2007-06-15

I bought this book from Amazon a few years ago and it is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I keep referring to it again and again. This book never fails to make me feel better when I am low or when I am being hard on myself. The message is so simple - be your own best friend, realise that your family is not able to give you what you need (if they could, then they would have) and instead give yourself the love and nurturing that you missed out on as a child. The layout of this book makes it so easy to read and I love the narrative style, it's like having an old friend who is always on your side. By the way, I'm from England and purchased this book from the US, but the messages contained here are universal and applicable to us all. Only you can give yourself the love and acceptance you crave - buying this book is a great first step.

5 out of 5 stars She's right!.......2007-03-05

I borrowed this book from a friend after I realized the committee of a**holes yammering in my head was anything but loving and compassionate. Somehow I had to learn to love myself. I signed up for a Debbie Ford telecourse (Love Beyond Belief--excellent course) and supplemented it with this book, and Be the Person You Want to Find, also by Cheri Huber. Both books are excellent but this is my favorite. It's simple, it's fun, it's brilliant. It got me back into meditating which has been wonderfully calming and enlightening. Reading this reminded me that it's not about what I do or become but about who I am BEing right now in this moment. I dont have to prove anything! I started taking notes as I read my borrowed copy and quickly realized I needed to buy my own copy and did. Now I can scribble in it and read it whenever I need a reality check. I can honestly say now, there is nothing wrong with me! I also plan to read The Depression Book since I have been thru some depressions in the past and believe it is hereditary in my family. These books are good medicine. Since taking the Debbie Ford course and reading Cheri's books I have been able to wean completely off the Lexipro antidepressant I'd been taking for over a year. I feel great and my libido is coming back from the dead. Thank you Cheri!!

5 out of 5 stars Don't be deceived by what appears to be simple, Cheri's simple approach is extremely powerful and effective.......2007-02-26

Cheri Huber is an excellent speaker and author. I have read most of her books and I always get a lot out of them. In fact, I frequently recommend them to my clients because they are simple, straightforward and easy to relate to. They are written in an upbeat fasion and they get practical very quickly.

Cheri Huber is actually a founder of a Zen monastery and a big advocate of sitting still and listening to the wisdom within. Her general approach is to get quiet and experience the layers that are beneath the everyday mental chatter. She advocates staying with difficult emotions including shame and approaching your areas of discomfort with love and compassion.

Krishamurti once said, "Seeing the truth deeply is what liberates, not your efforts to be free." I suspect Cheri would add that what limits your ability to see deeply so that shame and self-hatred unravels is self compassion. Without this quality of acceptance, inevitably defense mechanisms will kick up.

This booka and many of Cheri's other books combine the insights of Buddhism with some cognitive therapy techniques. This particularly evident in her Self Acceptance course which I highly recommend as an accompaniment to this book.

You really can't go wrong with any of Cheri Huber's books. They are filled with compassion, practical wisdom and are characterized by a simple, direct and powerful way of moving through the world.

5 out of 5 stars If you are reading this consider yourself one of the lucky ones- You have disovered gold- The end of suffering........2006-11-23

Over my the past ten years, I have done a great amount of reading, research and soul searching in the effort to find treatment to my OCD, anxiety disorders, depression, blocks ETC. I have been to many psychologists "specializing" in anxiety disorders. I have established relationships with the top and most cutting edge specialists in the field of the treatment of anxiety disorders.
The common denominator that the world of psychology is just starting to understand is that these disorders are, in truth, just the tip of the iceberg of a deep seated rejection of self. The ONLY way to end the living hell of a life full of anxiety is acceptance. Acceptance is the key. A deep comprehensive acceptance of self. The "new wave" of the psychology world is just beginning to get it.
Cheri Huber's book is a very important and fun read to get the basics of the dynamics of the root to these disorders. What is important to understand is that the ideas given over in this book are the same ideas that people are paying $250.00 an hour to hear from the top-anxiety disorder therapists in the country. I recommend buying this book and doing some more Amazon searches under "self-acceptance" and beginning a library to educate yourself on these fundamental truths. If you are among one of the lucky ones-You will begin a life changing process of self restoration, one of spontaneity, intimacy, and life.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious, Tough and Insightful.......2007-01-12

Readers of Objective Hate: The Prequel should be warned to hold onto their seats and prepare for the roller-coaster read of a lifetime! The book is a breathtaking chronicle of one man's journey and lessons learned along the way.

My neck is still sore from all the positive nodding in acknowledgement and agreement from most of the points/arguments raised in Star's book. While the philosophical thinking unveiled in the book are challenging (and murky), much of the points of the book will prove insightful and filled with wisdom.

Objective Hate is the work of a expert communicator. A communicator with communicates with biting edge and humor. Prepare, it isn't for the faint of heart.

Stylistic writing and never biting, Star's book is quite a look.

4 out of 5 stars An appetizer in every sense of the word..............2006-12-08

I was anxiously awaiting The Hater's book. In fact, I had pre-ordered "Raise your own F'n Kids", but apparently it never saw the light of day [or was replaced with 'Objective Hate'] after the DJ Envy circus, which, by the way, I thought was a brilliant, gangster, 1st amendment move by Star.

In either case, I was looking forward to learning more about the philosophy that helped open my third eye as I drove to work each morning.
The book is an enjoyable, breezy read that manages to be sharp, intelligent, even gritty at times. He sprinkled in street vernacular, but at some points it was truly unneccessary and can sometimes detract from the brilliance of the writer.

The prequel was autobiographical in nature, yet suprisingly succinct in that regard. He briefly explains the various periods and influentual people in his life and quickly moves on. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A HIP HOP TELL ALL THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU!!!

The one thing that surprised and impressed me about Star's story are the periods of self reflection. In my journey, I have found myself revisiting and analyzing my past & I always thought I was going backward emotionally. But I realize now that it is an essential part of "knowledge of self".

While I appreciated knowing his backstory, I wanted to learn more about Objective Hate. It was just starting to get good, focusing on the philosophy, and I was on the last page.

And just like an appetizer, it whet my appetite. It filled me up, but not enough to make me push the dinner plate away. It evened opened my palatte to taste new things. Looking forward to learning more about Objective Hate!!

5 out of 5 stars I ride with "The Hater".......2006-11-09

I know this isn't the standard review, but I just had to be the first to comment on the triumphant accomplishments of the one and only "True Hater." I don't need to read this book to know it is a great literary accomplishment, from a man I use to listen to on a daily basis in the morning. The Hater will ride a again!!!

Star is number one, worldwide Star!!!

Book Description

Finally, a weight loss book that not only is enjoyable to read, but is also jam packed with "how-to-do-it" based on 20 years of clinical practice and obesity research. The No-Amylose Diet (bet you haven't tried it yet) is a fresh approach to a tired subject that usually features some variation on the wrong-headed ideas that "the way to lose weight is to cut back on calories, avoid fat and get small amounts of exercise regularly." Sorry, we have tried that approach for years and it just doesn't work. Just look at the maintenance rate for patients who use the "expert advice." Less than 10% of patients lose 30 pounds and less than 5% of that group keeps the weight off at 1 year follow-up. That advice is worthless, yet just look at the New Years' resolutions to push away from the table and go for a 30 minute jog. That's no way to lose weight! It won't work for very long.

And it can't. Fat storage is a complex process that is based on genetically controlled insulin levels and the response of insulin to the rate of rise of blood sugar following a meal. The controlling factor on insulin release isn't the number of calories we eat, but the effect of those calories on blood sugar. Foods that turn to sugar (glucose) quickly, like all amylose starches, corn syrup (low-fat foods make us fat), maltodextrins and table sugar (sucrose) set off the insulin fat storage machinery like crazy. Most of us with weight problems really aren't self-indulgent overeaters. Most of us hate our extra weight and wish we could eat like those skinny friends of ours who eat more than we do!

Lose the Weight You Hate takes us seriously, as well as our obesity related health problems. Cholesterol? Boy, have we been sold a bill of goods! Learn what really is going on with cholesterol (Chapters 10 and 11) before you swallow another statin drug that you might not need. How about the CDC talking about the national explosion of diabetes and obesity? They want us to think it is all because of our triple cheeseburgers and fries. Wrong! The chapter (14) on environmental acquisition of diabetes and obesity will knock your socks off. Learn what immune system factors, pro-inflammatory cytokines (yes, it is time to learn the medical terms), do to our insulin receptors (and therefore our insulin storage of the sugar we eat as fat). Look why our environmental exposures are the greatest threat to our waistlines. But there is hope when facts about the health effects of our changing lifestyles and our increasing use of chemicals act as a basis for improved weight control.

Even better, Chapter 13 will show you how an FDA approved medication, Avandia, currently marketed to help treat diabetes, actually is a fantastic weight loss aid in those folks with "insulin resistance." In an academic paper, featured at the 83rd Endocrine Society meetings this past June (2001), the author proves that avoiding amylose and adding Avandia gave the most difficult weight loss patients he treats a terrific boost in burning fat. Moreover, look where the ladies lost the weight-their hips! How many patients would like to lose their tummy safely, with a diet that is a new, enjoyable lifestyle not an exercise in self-torture.

Speaking of exercise, if you are like most of us, you don't have the minimum of 12 hours per week (that's right, 12 hours)to sweat off those few pounds. Quit being a masochist! If you want to exercise and have the time, great, have fun. But don't think that walking 3 miles an hour will do anything significant for a jelly roll. It just won't work. With 18 chapters, case studies and 50 enjoyable original recipes mixed in with hard science and an amusing outlook on life and weight loss, Lose the Weight You Hate is worth reading over and over again. 455 pages, index, glossary and appendices and a chapter on Childhood Obesity complete the text.

Good stuff - bought it for my sister and she likes it.

5 out of 5 stars Lose the Weight Actually Make Sense.......2007-05-13

This is a well written book with scientific research and insight behind it. We are so different when it comes to weight, how we got it and how best to lose it.

4 out of 5 stars Explains ingenious, cutting edge pharmacological treatment for insulin and leptin resistance.......2006-10-03

Resetting genetic expression of insulin and leptin resistence is the treatment most likely to help people lose weight, when diets, exercise, herbals and thyroid hormone have not worked. We all know someone who can not lose weight despite eating low calorie diets and exercising religiously. Hypothyroidism accounts for about 12 percent of the population, yet about 50 percent of Americans are overweight, with about 33 percent, officially obese.

Many officially obese people actually suffer from insulin and leptin resistance. Insulin and leptin levels can be measured in blood samples to test whether they contribute to preventing weight loss. Leptin and Insulin hormone tests can be ordered, by essentially any physician. Although many of the biochemical and hormonal concepts in this book seem very abstract and theoretical, they are real. Florida Detox has measured excess insulin and leptin levels, in overweight patients, while some of our lean patients had very low leptin levels.

Barry Sears, PhD explains how to reduce insulin resistance in the Omega Rx Zone, but Lose the Weight You Hate is one of the few books I am aware of, which explains how to use thiazolidinedione antidiabetic medications to reset genetic expression of insulin and leptin receptors. Shoemakers biochemical approach is solid and scientific, unlike many of the overpromoted weight loss approaches. Shoemaker provides many interesting case histories, which put a human face on the complex biochemical concepts he explains, with impressive clarity. He clearly explains the limited ability of exercise to consume excess calories. His diet is based on what actually occurs biochemically, at the cellular level, as insulin receptors assist transport of glucose molecules through the cell membrane.

The chapters explaining that cholesterol consumption only needs to be reduced in 20 percent of patients, deserve wider publication and increased emphasis. He clearly indicates the tests required to determine whether people need to limit cholesterol consumption. He exposes the fallacy of low calorie, low fat diets and recommends diets which people can actually maintain. The chapter discussing gout causation and treatment was the most informative information, I have encountered discussing gout.

The information concerning the relationship of environmental toxins and obesity is profound. Shoemaker clearly has empathy for overweight people and apparently practices what he preaches.

I think this is the best weight loss book, which almost no one has heard of. I gave this book 4 stars, because it neglected to discuss hypothyroidism, which I feel is essential, for a book with this title.

Steven Sponaugle
Research Director, Florida Detox

3 out of 5 stars Big Help.......2006-03-25

This book answered a lot of questions about why my efforts to lose weight were not working. I have begun putting what I have learned into practice and have already lost 5 lbs!

5 out of 5 stars An MD who is a chemist has great advice.......2005-03-17

I heartily promote reading Dr. Shoemaker's books. I have read his other books as well. He is so down to earth and accurate because of his background in Chemistry. Besides reading his books, I have taken his visual test on line, which proved I had a neurotoxin mediated illness. My weight gain was due to this. Then I fought for months to finally, after 12 years, to get a positive result for Lyme infection. He was too far away to go to for the problem, but my doctor followed his protocol. I also used his little less than $10.00 eye tests to monitor my recovery and also to test the rest of my household, who fortunately had no problem.

His diet and advice are great.

5 out of 5 stars Life-saving psychological help with diabetes challenges.......2007-07-03

With diabetes, there is no walking away from the difficulties of the illnes; it can't be laid aside when the going gets tough. This great book helps look at and deal with the everyday difficulties that are real parts of living with diabetes. Dr. Polonsky is like a friend who understands and furthermore, has good suggestions for how to handle what you feel you can't live with any more. Great tone, helpful information, comforting message. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Diabetes Burnout.......2005-08-09

EXCELLENT book for those living with diabetes. Diabetes burnout is very common. This book is full of tips, suggestions, and even tests, to help you in dealing with diabetes.

3 out of 5 stars Golden empathy at first but it only goes so deep.......2004-05-14

When I first saw the chapter for "Werewolf Syndrome" I knew I had to buy this book. It makes for an interesting read at first to learn about others' experiences. Though one thing the author fails to do is provide instruction on the process of motivation, and only provides a very shallow surface, if any, of scientific insight into why people get "burned out". I would suggest going to the book store and skimming this book to feel better about yourself but don't take it home with you.

One chapter he could've included would have been MY GENERAL PHYSICIAN HAS MISDIAGNOSED ME! I was burned out on my diabetes type II management. I couldn't get my sugars down! I would go to my GP and get the advice of take these pills and eat right. Then come back in three months we'll see if you're better. After two years I finally went to an endocronologist, *slap-slap*, and he is convinced I am type I LADA diabetes. Sure enough after a couple of insulin shots I am feeling normal! (Well, normal feels like a drug after having hyperglycemia for two years.) This is my chapter for the burnout book, sc$&@ the GP and go to an endocronologist.

5 out of 5 stars This book tells it like it is.......2004-01-19

When I picked up Diabetes Burnout, I was truly amazed. Dr. Polonsky understands that there are "barriers to self-care," real life problems and situations that get in the way of doing what's best for our bodies.

He knows that people make a cost/benefit analysis when it comes to self-care. If the behavior is too hard or too unpleasant, and the rewards don't seem worth it, we're not going to consistently exercise, check sugars, or eat what we're supposed to.

This problem is not just true for people with diabetes. It applies to anyone with chronic illness, or really, to anybody at all. I knew about this from living with multiple sclerosis, and I wrote about it in my book. But I didn't think anybody else had developed these ideas. I was sure Dr. Polonsky must have some kind of chronic condition himself, because he knows what it's like. But he doesn't have an illness. He's just very insightful.

I really like the humor in this book. I know some reviewers accuse him of being "cutesy" or Disneyfying diabetes, but I think being able to laugh at your situation helps, even when it's really painful. His description of "werewolf eating" and "Diabetes police" are highly evocative -- they get the point across. I don't think he's talking down to anyone -- he has compassion for people's struggles and wants us to feel better.

It's true that Diabetes Burnout does not cite its sources very well and doesn't contain a lot of specific info on diets or other self-care practices. But that's not its purpose. He is giving tools for identifying and overcoming our barriers -- social, practical, psychological or economic. This is important -- some of those barriers may have been with us for decades, and overcoming them can change not just diabetes management, but also entire lives.

He also inspires by telling stories of real people he has worked with, who have made great strides in difficult circumstances. It's entertaining, inspiring and educational (just like my book :-). What more do you want?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for ANYONE with a chronic illness.......2003-04-17

He makes some really stellar points and has already helped me begin changing over to a more "problem solving" approach, rather than my previous approach to type 2 diabetes, which could best be termed "denial and despair".

I think that removing the 'stinger' from long-term diabetes care requires a bit of pseudo-professional detachment. Rather than seeing my diabetes as a great dramatic production, with me as the tragic heroine, his book is helping me to see it as a series of discreet problems needing solutions (where possible) and acceptance (where no solution is possible).

You'd have to know me to know what a drastic change this is from my normal way of being: 'Drama Queen' just doesn't do me justice!

Anyway, I recommend his book to ANYONE with a chronic illness, diabetic or not. In fact, one could just replace the words 'diabetes' with 'obesity' and instantly turn his book into the best thing I have EVER read on the subject of long-term, permanent weight control. His approach speaks to any long-term health struggle even though it is explicitly (and skillfully) directed at diabetes and diabetics.
