"A life without direction is a life without passion," says motivational specialist, therapist, and career counselor Barbara Sher. In I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was, a sort of broader, less dense, and less intimidating version of What Color Is Your Parachute?, she reveals how to "recapture long lost goals, overcome the blocks that inhibit your success, decide what you want to be, and live your dreams."

This is a perfect book for new college graduates or anyone sick and tired of languishing in a dead-end job or relationship--yet reluctant to make drastic life changes due to uncertainty about what would actually inspire them. I Could Do Anything combines the I'm-not-buying your-excuses inspiration of Dr. Laura Schlessinger with the soothing, analytic encouragement of Dr. Martin Seligman in his classic Learned Optimism. In other words, Sher will pick you up off your butt and get you moving. She's included enough self-analytical exercises in here to save you hundreds of dollars in therapy.

Whether you're looking to make improvements in your job or personal life, Sher will teach you how to determine what your goals are, and how to successfully reach them--even if right now the only thing you know is that you're vaguely to very unhappy and haven't the foggiest idea what to do with yourself.

Book Description

If you suspect there could be more to life than what you're getting...if you always knew you could do anything if you only knew what it was, this extraordinary book is about to prove you right!

5 out of 5 stars MyBestLifeCoach Applauds this Book.......2007-10-05

As a life coach, I find that most people really do know what they want in life. There is a subset of folks who truly have no clue; this is an excellent resource for them. I find that most confusion about life goals does come from resistance to declaring, "I want this". Ms. Sher deals with these issues beautifully in her book, and I use many of her ideas in my coaching work with clients. All of Barbara Sher's books are an excellent vehicle for stimulating change, but many people will need a life coach to move through the change process.

5 out of 5 stars "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was" might be your answer.......2007-08-06

Steve Jobs' commencement speech at Stanford University. In it, he says the advice we've all heard a thousand times:

"You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." - Steve Jobs

Barbara Sher has some excellent books, DVDs, CDs and seminars on helping you to find your passion. Get your hands on everything that you can until one of them turns on that light bulb and you discover what that passion is and then do everything in your power to follow.

One example she offers: You have a passion for ice skating and competing, but you are not quite good enough to make it professionally. Well, there are still alternatives. Go to work for the Ice Follies in some capacity that keeps you close to your passion. Take a position in sales with a manufacturer of ice skates, etc. You get the idea.

You have to work hard at this and try to think out of the box. Let Barbara Sher help you step by step.

If Barbara is not the answer for you, don't stop looking or you may follow my true story below.

In my youth, after leaving my hometown, I read all of the books and listened to all of the tapes PMA, success, motivation, sales and on and on and they helped.

But, "If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be and what would you be doing?" Traveling on a sailboat through out the South Sea Islands didn't seem like it was going to make me a fortune or support my family. It is still necessary to be pragmatic.

So, what do you think happened? I did what probably 99% of the population does. I went to work for a large corporation and at the end of nearly 5 years I realized this wasn't for me. I had been transferred 5 times in 5 years, San Francisco to Houston to Philadelphia to Houston to Los Angeles and finally to San Diego. But, the reality set in. What was I trained to do? The answer was, since I had been the general manager of a national collection agency with branches across the United States, I would open a collection agency. That's what I knew and I knew I was good at it. And, I knew I could make good money doing it.

And, all of a sudden, I was the President of my own company, small though it might have been at the time.

But, then the frightening reality set in, I hated what I was doing. I didn't look forward to getting up each morning and racing into the office and I hated the overwhelming stress that came with being the President of my own company . But, of course, now I was in my late forties so what was I going to do? The only practical thing was to continue going in to a job I hated and tough it out until retirement time. My life had flashed before my eyes and twenty five years had gone by, unfulfilled, unsatisfied and day by day.

The point is that this is what happens to most of us in life. We get rapped up in the day to day routine, the need to make enough money to pay our bills and raise our children and then all of a sudden, it is over. The children have grown and there we are.

I had essentially done the same thing, but I left Spokane, Washington after high school and had been introduced to a whole other world, one with goals, goal setting, big dreams, Zig Ziglar`s, Brian Tracey`s, etc.

What I lacked was the single most important thing of all, finding my passion and following it. And, finally I discovered "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was" by Barbara Sher which was recommended by a close, successful friend. Now, I am recommending it to you.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I Ever Read!.......2007-07-15

This book covered every question I could think of about life transition like: (1)What do I really love and what do I want to do with the rest of my life? (2)What's keeping me from moving forward in my life? (3)What is resistance and where does it come from? (4)What part of me is my real-self and why has it been in hiding so long? (5)Why action is better than analysis when I'm in a low mood? (6)How to move beyond a hurtful past. (7)How to overcome narcissistic tendencies. (8)How to claim and create a new life for myself.

Barbara Sher demonstrates how understanding that there is a reason for everything and finding that reason, can literally transform one's life. She encourages compassionate understanding as opposed to deep analysis of problems. She supplies creative, fun exercises that help target and clarify the answers to a myriad of questions. Her suggestions are priceless, like how to create your own support system.

This book is an artful fusion of creative career counseling, wise therapy, motivational inspiration and plain old common sense teaching. I've never seen so much information given away in one book. You'd think it would have taken her a lifetime to write. Thank you Ms. Sher for the best book I have ever read!

Inspiring. Soemthin to keep you thinking about your life choices. You have to do the work though. There is no book out there that will do it for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great read & I also recommend..........2007-01-04

I credit Sher's book with my new successful career choice. Her book was recommended by my career counselor. I dug deep, poured my heart into the exercises and came out with a career choice of sales & marketing. (I work for a leading environmental consulting company & my choice has been financially rewarding).

Another book also recommended by my career counselor and one I highly recommend is
The Sales Adventure Guide. Since I used Sher's book to make the sales career choice - I needed a book that would provide real insight and teach me how to go about "sur-thriving" in the sales world. If you are considering working in sales or marketing - definitely consider this (The Sales Adventure Guide) book.

All the best.

Book Description

Listen Up, Dads! Your Teen Is Talking to You!

As exasperating as parenting can be during these volatile years, your teen is depending on you for steady faithfulness, love, and guidance. And because teens often find words elusive and expression difficult, they probably haven’t told you the things they wish you somehow automatically knew. So let Dad, If You Only Knew... be your guide. Josh Weidmann, just out of the teen years himself, joins his father, James, to help dads understand where their kids are coming from. It’s a messy world they live in, and meeting them in it is no simple task. But knowing these essentials now makes fatherhood eight times easier!

Welcome to Your Teen’s World

It doesn’t matter if you have the most picture-perfect, ideal-in-every-way teen or one who’s in full-swing rebellion. That teen you love is a “riddle wrapped in a mystery.” No father can know what his teen is really thinking.

That’s why youth communicator Josh Weidmann teamed with his father, Jim, to help you bridge the gap. In Dad, If You Only Knew…you’ll get an open, honest glimpse inside the teen mind. Josh’s extensive research, combined with pointed direction from a father’s heart, provide you with the practical guidance you need to establish a healthy, thriving father-teen relationship. It’s one you desire, your teen needs, and you both can’t afford to miss.

Story Behind the Book

“The resounding cry of teens for their fathers rings in my ear. I have been speaking to youth for five years and the greatest void I see in teens’ lives is the one left by their dad. I am only twenty-three years old myself, and to this day I can say that my dad is the most influential man in my life. Because of his impact, I have asked him share in this book. We have written this message in hopes of helping dads reengage in the vital father-teen relationship.” —Josh Weidmann

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dad, If you only knew.......2007-05-14

A light weight reminder of important things a growing daughter needs to see in and feel from her Dad.

5 out of 5 stars Simple wisdom. Profound imact........2006-06-28

Well, I'm no dad, but I was once a teen, and I have a dad. And this is a message every father today needs to hear. Josh and Jim collaberate to offer us simple truths and guidance. Josh's work with youth all over the country, and his life of integrity, make him an insightful, powerful voice that's worth every father's listening ear (or, reading eye!).

4 out of 5 stars Good Info.......2006-03-11

Josh Weidmann and his dad did a very nice job reminding us what it's like to be young and have questions about our dreams and nightmares in relation to our fathers. The large info is that we, as fathers, frequently go through parenthood oblivious to the real thoughts and fears our kids have. This book is a plain fact educater of those issues with good ideas on how to be a friend instead of a foe to your teen. I recommend the book with a caveat not to stop there but be willing to spend the time while it's still available with your kid and invest in that special love account so they may make withdrawals when the time needs.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamic word for all Dads.......2005-08-11

If you're a dad, this book by Josh and Jim Weidmann is a MUST have for you. You will find the heart of your teen and the path to relationship with that teen. If you feel you are losing touch with the teen in your life (or if your just facing the teen years ahead), you NEED to read this book so you can meet your teen on first base and run the bases of life with them - not against them.

5 out of 5 stars Great book by a great guy.......2005-08-05

Josh and Jim Weidmann have written one of the most challenging and encouraging books for dads. It's one thing to read a book from a young guy telling you how to parent, it's another thing to read a book written by an amazing father-son combination. As a youth pastor I highly recommed this book to any dad that wants to have a better relationship with their teenagers Great job guys!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Romance.......2007-02-10

Carlton Harrington III is the interim CEO of Harrington Enterprises, a large import-export business with headquarters in Miami and Nassau, Bahamas. Latonya Stevens, an employee within Harrington Enterprises, is his nemesis. As a defense mechanism, Carlton uses intimidation as a way to control his growing feelings for Latonya.

As a child Carlton witnessed a destructive relationship between his parents, which resulted in their deaths. Latonya, on the other hand, was raised in a dysfunctional home, in which the outcome was her father leaving and her mother dying of a broken heart. Shipped to live with her grandmother, Latonya took on the role of provider, attended college and secured a job to care for her ailing grandmother and finance her younger sister's education.

Carlton and Latonya's employee-boss relationship turns into a domineering romance that results in marriage and children. The marriage brings drama, ripe with jealousy and meddling by Carlton's grandfather; who vows not to see his grandson repeat the sins of his father with the likes of a manipulating, low-class African American woman.

With IF ONLY YOU KNEW, Gwyneth Bolton has penned a romance that features members of the African Diaspora. She highlights the distrust and dislike between Caribbean blacks and African Americans; this made for an interesting and educational read. The story does not boast the classic romance blueprint. Carlton is verbally and mentally abusive and while Latonya appears to be submissive, she is anything but. The typical boy meets girl and falls in love scenario is absent but the story is filled with the pain of the past and the effect of the future. The secondary characters add an enjoyable element of humor to a rather complex relationship. Added to this mix are several incidents of miscommunication, the attempts to right the wrongs of the past and finally, self-discovery of both protagonists.

4 out of 5 stars I Love A Good Ending.......2006-12-17

This story was so engaging starting on page one. Not only was it a sweet, romantic read the author also managed to get you thinking about racism among the various black cultures, and as sad as it is to believe it still rings true. As if black people don't have enough issues to deal with already. I loved this book and all that the characters went through to get back to each other. I could have strangled the grandfather with his antiquated views and wished Latonya's character was a little stronger in the beginning, but then that would have changed the whole story wouldn't it?

5 out of 5 stars Romance Worth Reading.......2006-11-07

In Gwyneth Bolton's If Only You Knew, Latonya Stevens has worked hard all of her life. After her mother died, she helped her grandmother take care of her sister while putting herself through college. Now that she has graduated, Latonya has landed a good-paying job at Harrington Enterprises. Latonya is confident this job will ensure her ability to put her sister through college and pay the mortgage on the house that she shares with her ailing grandmother. Her confidence soon dwindles when Carlton Harrington III, the boss's grandson, takes over the Miami offices where she works.

From day one, Carlton starts giving Latonya grief. From insulting her in front of her peers, to making her work long hours, Carlton leaves no stone unturned when it comes to humiliating her. Just when Latonya refuses to take the abuse any longer and q ui ts, Carlton kisses her and things between them are forever changed.

The author's ability to immerse her readers into the lives of her characters and emotionally hold them hostage is uncanny. While reading this story I constantly whispered, "Something is missing, I do not feel this connection," despite Latonya and Harrington's undisputed devotion to each other. Just when I felt the story had run its course, the characters parted over the very thing that I realized was missing. To me, Bolton's ability to convey this so subtly was amazing. Very few authors have the ability to show a message so strongly without tel ling you. I commend Bolton for her ability to do just that. In addition, Bolton's exploration of prejudices inside the African race is to be commended as well. The prejudices Latonya, an African American, endured at the hands of Carlton's grandfather, a Bahamian, were realistic. As a native of Miami I have seen these very same stereotypes play out all too often.

If romance is your thing, you will definitely want to be in the know with Gwyneth Bolton's If Only You Knew.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2006-08-15

I had heard varying opinions on this book so I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I'm glad that I did b/c I really enjoyed this book. Romance books cover a large spectrum and no this book was not you "typical" romance story. It was still good none the less. To me it dealt with the real issue of how kids who grow into adult and how they are effected by their parents' bad marriage. This was the case with Tonya and Carlton. They loved each other so much they were afraid that the past would repeat itself in their own marriage. The story had its H-O-T moments as well. The other characters in the story were great too. They made you laugh or made you want to fight. The stroy also dealt with black on black issues that are very relevant today. The reader is taken on a emtional roller coaster with this story. Again romance is very broad which this story demonstrates very very well. This was my first book by Ms. Bolton but it will not be the last one. Definie Recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars great romance book dealing with black on black prejudices.......2006-07-31

I just got around to reading this book and could'nt put it down!! Very well written. I really enjoyed that it wasn't the typical romance novel because it deals with a subject that's hurtful. That there black on black racism.
Carlton's grandfather and those within his social circle looked down on black americans. I know personally of such. A few years back a co-worker husband's family was in an uproar because his wife was a black american. His family was from Jamaica and rather well off. They could accept anyone else(white, latino, etc) but a black american. There view was just like Carlton's grandfather. She was a product of a lower income single parent home and they figured that she had little or no values and her family wanted to stay that way.
This book makes a great book club read.

This book has some heartbreakingly beautiful photos and I love the title, but watch out, especially if you're buying a gift for a sensitive dog lover. There is a page where a yard-dog, the kind who lives his life chained outside, is wondering why he's always chained up. It is too painful for a lot of people to see this.

And all Jessica Wakefield had to do was smile.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!.......2003-02-02

This book was really good, except maria needs to get over conner because she is just sad and it's getting annoying. I think she and ken should hook up. conner and liz make a really good couple. ever since the 1st book i thought they should hook-up. i think that they will last a long time. and jeremy seems like a really sweet guy.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2002-07-04

This is one of the best SVH Senior Year books written!I am glad to see that Jessica got over the rumors...Connor and Liz+Perfection!

5 out of 5 stars The Best So Far..........2002-05-01

I think "If You Only Knew" is the best book in the series so far, even though the "Melissa Loves Will, Will Loves Jessica" thing is getting old. But it's cool that Ken's back.

At the beginning of the book, here's what's happening:

    -Conner is confused about Liz.
    -Liz is confused about Conner.
    -Jeremy thinks Jess hates him.
    -Jess thinks Jeremy hates her.
-Maria thinks Conner wants her back.
-Melissa thinks Tia and Jess told on her.
-Will never wants to leave Melissa.

At the end of the book, here's what's happening:

    -Conner has kissed Liz again.
-Jeremy has found out about Jessica's reputation and something bad has happened to his father.
-Maria saw Conner and Liz after they kissed and knows something's up.
    -Will wants to leave Melissa.

    Confused?

5 out of 5 stars Not the best but oh so close!!.......2002-03-02

The fifth book in the SVH Senior Year series will not leave you disappointed.I love the way the book has been set out with diary-like excerpts,lists,e-mails,senior polls, stories and homework all done in a certain handwriting font for each character. It is seriously cool and helps make Senior Year that much cooler than all other teen series.
In this book Melissa did not get the cheerleading captaincy she so desired. Will instead of feeling the need to comfort his girlfriend feels like a trapped animal. The absolute best part is when he goes to see his friend Angel(I know you're thinking'what were his parents thinking?')who says the most hilarous thing on Page 69.It is so funny.
Anyway this book mainly focuses on Jessica and Jeremy.Jeremy really likes Jessica and Jessica likes him(and I think they're the perfect couple)but everytime Jeremy asks her out she refuses because she doesn't want to fuel the rumours that are going around. She finally agrees and goes to a party but unfortunately for Jess,Melissa and her obnoxious friends appear and try once again to ruin her reputation. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens and it ends up as a bit of a cliffhanger.
Elizabeth and Conner can't hide their attraction to each other but they might have to because even after being brutally dumped by Conner,Maria still has feelings for him and is trying to get him back-with the help of Elizabeth. You'd think friends would be more honest as it saves all the silent treatment they have in Book 7.But once again you'll have to read the books to find out who's ignoring who.
As a another addition to the story Maria has to work with Ken on a project but Ken's still moping over the fact that his girlfriend Olivia died.In the most unexpected turn of events Maria succeeds in getting through to Ken.
I really love these books. They are great!!!They look every part the teen drama they are but you have to read them.If you like this you'll be sure to love the rest of the series.I think that reading about the lives of melodramatic teens is the best medicine.Pretty soon you'll be wanting to know everything about Elizabeth,Jessica and the whole gang.
It'll be interesting though to see how they tie the end of this series to Sweet Valley University as it is already so different!
    Happy Reading!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fifth Book in the SVH Senior Year Series.......2002-02-26

After their first kiss in "I've Got a Secret" (#4), Conner McDermott and Elizabeth Wakefield are struggling with their emotions for each other, especially since Liz's friend (Maria Slater) is still hung-up on Conner, even though he dumped her a week ago. Nevertheless, Maria aims to win him back no matter what.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Aames is still infatuated with Jessica Wakefield, but she's trying to brush him off. That's not going to stop Jeremy from trying though, even though he's swamped with school activities, sports, and a part-time job that will hopefully improve his family's financial situation.

"If You Only Knew" is the fifth book in the Sweet Valley High: Senior Year series. This is another great addition to the teen romance drama that's been building since the beginning of the school year. Worth reading if you're 12+ and a fan of Francine Pascal's Sweet Valley books.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great short chapter book.......2007-04-29

It was a great book! i read it when i was 11. I could really connect with Zoe (the main character). It doesn't talk about boys. so, if you want a kind and nice friendship book you should get this one!!!! I loved it, so, so will you!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2006-05-02

I read this book when I was 13 years old. I absolutely loved it at the time. I could relate to all of the characters because they were just like my friends. And the plot completely reflected life as a preteen or how I wished my life could be. I will be 20 next month and I still remember this series of books being one of my favorites as a young teen. I would also recommend the California Diaries to anyone who enjoyed this series as they were also a favorite of mine.

4 out of 5 stars Helen's review of "If Only You Knew".......2004-04-02

"When you're the yougest of five girls, nothing's your own" that's the first sentence of the book.Zoe Grandon is the fifth child in the Grandon family. she has heroldest sister,Anne Marie's mouth, her second oldest sister Bay's hair. But unfortunately, she has her mom's behind. Zoe is friends with everyone.Even boys.Zoe is kind spirited and friendly.Zoe has a crush on herf riend,Tommy. But her almost best friend, C.J,has a crush on him too! Zoe can't decide whether to she should go after Tommy or let C.J have him. But she finally decides that since C.J liked him first,C.J should have Tommy. But does Tommy like Zoe? Or does Tommy likeC.J? What if he doesn't like any of them?

I first chose this book when I saw my friend reading it. The cover was a picture of a girl holding a tennis racket in her hand.I read the blurb and I was hooked. But I was confused too. In the blurb, there was this word, hormones. What does it mean?I asked my teacher, Mr.Carbone.I found out that hormones means something in your body that makes you act differently and behave differemtly.I was still puzzled. As I read more, I understood what it meant.I really like this book and I want to read the other books in the series. It's a very good book and I know other people would enjoy it.

When Zoe let CJ have Tommy, I was angry. If Iwas Zoe, I would go after Tommy. After all, so what if CJ liked Tommy first? Zoe KNEW Tommy first. Zoe is just too friendly to hurt CJ's feelings. Another book, "Kitty in High School" is about the same thing. Kitty likes a boy named Skip. Kitty wasn't sure if she should ask Skip to the dance, and when Kitty makes up her mind, Skip is taken by her best friend. So if Zoe doesn't go and try to win Tommy back, she'll never get the chance!

My favorite part in this book is the whole book, so there's not much to explain, is there?

I would recommend this book to people who are ready to learn about growing up. If you are like zoe and you have a crush on someone, read this book and you might learn something.

5 out of 5 stars zoe gradon is the kewlest!!.......2003-12-20

on reading this book you would seriously have the feeling that you are actually reading a secret diary of a 12yr old. anybody from age 10-14yrs can relate to zoe's character of being tomboyish and feeling clumsy & unpretty at some stage or the other.this is a must read for all the teenage crowd who have less than sqeaky clean lives.rachel vail is the best!

    5 out of 5 stars Too Good!.......2003-06-03

This book was awesome. It is about a girl who was always considered one of the guys. All of a sudden, she finds herself becoming attracted to Tommy Levit, her next-door nieghbor, and wearing tight tops to school. She asks Tommy who he likes, and it turns her life upside down, because CJ Hurley, who she wants to be her best friend, likes him too. Did she make a big mistake?
I think that Rachel Vail is an awesome author. If you like this book, you should read all the books by her.
