I took it on vacation with me and I couldn't put it down. A great book for aspiring athletes and coaches as well as your average Joe who works 9-5. The coaches discuss a variety of topics from their childhood to how they motivate their players. Any easy read for all ages.

I've read through Game of Life and I enjoyed it very much. There are so many things to take from this book, not just into sports, but also some reflections on life. I would recommend this book to everybody.

3 out of 5 stars Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Anyone looking for inspiration, either for their own life or to share with others, will find a gold mine of quotes here. This book isn't just for sports fans.

4 out of 5 stars I generally don't go for books of this type...........2005-03-01

But when all things are considered the book is not really that bad, in fact certain quotes are very uplifting. I would rather read this then one of the 5 thousand Chicken Soup for the Souls any day of the week.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Motivational.......2003-10-01

You can make a significant, positive difference! That's the message of this book. It is filled with quotable insights from a wide variety of sources. "Great success demands great sacrifice" we're told on page 16 and many of these contributors have paid their fair share. This book inspires one to give. We're reminded on page 21 that "Ultimately we are remembered for what we give, not for what we take." In terms of cultivating the relationships in our lives, we're told "The quality of your life is determined by the quality of the people in your life." There are so many good quotes throughout this whole book that it is a delight to go through and try to select a few to give a flavor of what one will find. Consider the quote on page 32, "Everybody works hard when they feel like it, but only the best do it when they don't feel like it." In summary I'd just say "buy it and read it." It's well worth the money and effort.

Book Description

Pax Beale started lifting weights at the age of 53 to strengthen a bad back. He loved it so much that within a year he was competing in bodybuilding contests. Then, at the age of 61, with a national bodybuilding championship and a Mr. U.S.A. title under his belt, he was diagnosed with crippling heart disease.

After less-than-desirable results from a five-way coronary bypass, Pax's prognosis was still dire. Although his symptoms stabilized, he was essentially a heart cripple with only 25% of his maximum heart efficency, allegedly irreversible dead heart tissue, and the danger of an enlarged heart. He needed a miracle and ultimately got one. Now, with a body of his dreams in his 70s, Pax has quite a story to tell. Not only did he manage to recover from surgery and completely reverse his heart disease, he went on to win yet another national bodybuilding championship.

This book tells his inspiring true story and outlines the specific step-by-step program and philosophy that made his miraculous journey from heart surgery to national bodybuilding champion possible. He explains the four steps - nutrition, training, supplements, and the principle of total commitment - in great detail and presents important research into the cardiac benefits of weight-resistance training. He also introduces the nutritional supplement Creatine/Pyruvate, which his research supports was the pivotal component of his remarkable recovery.

One quickly realizes that Pax's comeback isn't a miracle after all. It was a result of hard work, research, and resourcefulness. Now he offers the knowledge he gained and the proven results of his experience in order to help others prevent or reverse America's number one killer - heart disease.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative.......2004-07-13

This book altered my perceptions on heart disease and the way I approach my life in general. The author, Pax Beale reversed his heart disease; I previously thought this was impossible. You internalize Mr. Beale's teachings because he speaks from the heart figuratively and literally using eccentric quips and his own earned life truths. I would recommend this book for anyone struggling with health, heart disease, and for anyone wanting to excel in life. He lights a fire under your ass, plain and simple.

I no longer choose to be a spectator.

This is a great read and I strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A review from an "old friend".......2004-07-06

It's been my pleasure to have known Pax Beale for 35 years. I knew him "pre-body for the ages", when he simply had what we used to refer to as a "good build". He & I were running buddies, and his coaching & companionship helped me to achieve many of my running goals. He has certainly had an incredible life of "experience". I can attest to the many zany challenges that he took on, which were held as crazy endeavors by his friends (& with which he now agrees). His book is a great deal to digest, but it certainly can motivate anyone who reads it to do SOMETHING to improve their life, both mentally & physically. So Pax, my friend, when will you be conducting your 1st Body for The Ages Seminar?

5 out of 5 stars Body for the Ages; From Heart Surgery to Bodybuilding Champi.......2004-03-25

This is a very readable and enjoyable book. Not only does it tell the tale of an amazing life but really gives great advice of what to do and how to do it. I appreciated the pictures of how perform certain excercise routines but some of the pictures could have been better.... I enjoyed it and derived a great of information on how to change my workout routines. And it clearly show that that there can be a great life after a heart attack. I would be curious to see if there is a follow up book.

3 out of 5 stars Baseball and Friendship.......2007-07-04

Seth thinks that if his father hadn't died when Seth was seven, Seth probably would have become a golfer. His father was an avid golfer, even though he said he wasn't all that good at it. But Seth's father did die, so instead of golfing with him on a Saturday afternoon, Seth ended up meeting Jimmy and his father at the park. Jimmy is a natural baseball player and his father is incredibly hard on him, yelling at him and making him practice the fundamentals over and over. Seth isn't very fond of Jimmy's dad; he doesn't like how the man yells at his son and how he sometimes seems to drink too much. Jimmy, though, defends his father and talks about how because his father is hard on him, he will someday play major league baseball.

Almost immediately, Seth is brought into Jimmy's baseball fantasy. At the age of eight, he is a little old to just start thinking about baseball, but Jimmy and his father manage to teach Seth enough for him to get on a little league team. He is so eager to catch up with his new friend that he practices hard and eventually advances through the Little League system.

Seth and Jimmy have an on-again, off-again relationship. They sometimes go years without seeing each other, such as when Jimmy's parents divorce and Jimmy goes to a different school. But when Jimmy comes back for high school, it's like they were never apart. As they grow older, though, their friendship becomes more difficult. The first problem is that Seth isn't nearly as good a baseball player as Jimmy. He tries hard, but he begins to suspect he simply doesn't have the raw talent necessary to make it like Jimmy could make it.

The second problem, and the one that worries Seth more and more, is the fact that Jimmy seems to be drinking more and more. He isn't sure how to stop his friend, and he finds himself backing off rather than starting a fight.

I liked that this book followed Seth and Jimmy through so many years; I felt like I could really see their friendship develop and change. I also liked that things weren't smooth for the characters. Each had his own problems and had to figure out how to deal with them.

It seemed odd to me, though, that there was never anything on Seth's mind except baseball and Jimmy. He never had any feelings for any girls that he mentioned and never seemed to have a single other friend except for Jimmy.

4 out of 5 stars Heart of a Champion.......2006-12-22

There are millions of books out in the world. But not all of them people like. I don't like sad books or girly books. I like sports books like baseball, basketball, and football. I also like action books. But one baseball book I really liked was Heart of a Champion. This book was written by Thomas J. Dygard. The book is about two kids in high school who have been friends since elementary school, and have a friendship that was meant to last forever. Jimmy is well on his way to being a Major League Baseball star. He made his school varsity team easily. Seth on the other hand, is struggling just to make the team. Both of them go threw some good and bad times. Like dealing with drugs, meeting new people, dealing with family members. But both of them finally figure out the consequences for doing bad and stupid things.
This book is a sad but a very exciting pulse-pounding book. But, it is also a book that sends a great message to high-school kids who love to play sports like Jimmy and Seth not to do drugs, or to drink and drive. This book is one of the best I have ever read. I like this book because I love baseball books. It has a great life lesson to teach all kids the good and bad things in life. This book had a big impact on me. Maybe it can have one on you too.

A little kid named Seth was hanging out at a park all by himself. Then he met Jimmy, a boy who changed his life. Jimmy got Seth into baseball and they played with eachother until high school. You will stay addicted to this books from all the suspenseful twists and turns. I think this is a good book because it's about an athlete who is very determined and builds up his skills. He goes through the obstacles of life and friendships. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports.

2 out of 5 stars There should be a rule against teenagers writing autobiographies.......2006-11-14

There should be a rule against teenagers writing autobiographies. Even teenagers who have achieved as much as Michelle Kwan had by the age of seventeen.

There was, admittedly, an obvious commercial reason for bringing this book out in 1997, just ahead of the 1998 Winter Olympics at which Kwan was expected to win a gold medal. She was fortunate to come into her sport immediately after the notorious Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan affair in 1994. The skating authorities had feared that this affair (variously known as Waterskate or the Battle of Wounded Knee) would damage their sport, but in fact it had precisely the opposite effect, thus proving conclusively that there is no such thing as bad publicity. Public interest in figure skating was therefore at its height in the mid-nineties, and much of this interest centred on Kwan, Tara Lipinski and Nicole Bobek who had succeeded Harding and Kerrigan as America's leading female skaters. Bobek, another pretty blue-eyed blonde with a troubled history, was immediately crowned Queen Tonya II, leaving Kwan and Lipinski to skate off for Kerrigan's role as America's sweetheart (a role in which Nancy herself had often seemed ill at ease).

There are two main problems with this book. The first is that it came far too early in Kwan's career. Since 1997 she has gone on to become one of the great female figure skaters of all time, the winner of five world and nine American national titles. Originally criticised as a "jumping bean", a purely technical skater, she has developed into one of the most artistic skaters of recent years. (She has never won an Olympic title, but the blame for that must lie with the eccentric judges who handed the 1998 gold medal to Lipinski, a skater who throughout her amateur career never seemed to get beyond the "jumping bean" stage). In 1997 Kwan's career was only just beginning, and her ghostwriter Laura James was left with little to do except narrate a pedestrian and repetitive account of Kwan's childhood and her early skating career, leavened with occasional bits of bland philosophising. The second problem is that it the book is appallingly badly written. Ghostwriters are not normally noted for a polished literary style, but James's is dull far beyond the call of duty.

I was disappointed with this book because I have always been such an admirer of Kwan as a skater. (The second star is awarded more for her skating style than for her book's literary merits). I hope that one day, preferably after she has retired, she will find the time to produce a proper autobiography and tell the full- and doubtless fascinating- story of one of figure skating's great careers. If she lacks the time or self-confidence to write it herself (although I generally find that autobiographies actually written by the celebrity whose name appears on the cover often read better than ghostwritten ones) she should find a writer whose talent matches her own for skating.

    4 out of 5 stars reason for a champion.......2005-10-05

    . Maggie Willems
    9-29-05
    Period 4
    Story of a champion
    Michelle Kwan
I chose Heart of a Champion because Michelle Kwan is an inspirational woman in a tough sport. She explains how she gets through the sport that she loves with all its pressure. The expectations of the reporters are described. The worlds that Michelle went to are in this extraordinary book. Michelle Kwan is a wonderful ice skater. She gets through the building pressure in the sport with help from her support group.
Michelle Kwan loves figure skating. She has loved it since her older brother, by four years, joined an ice hockey team when he was nine. She would easily learn moves and then want to move on. When she got older she was told not to go into the senior tryouts while her coach was away, but she went to the competition and was advanced to the hardest level. Since she always wanted to move on, she quickly moved up, but her support group stayed with her all the way.
Michelle Kwan's support group was an asset to her winnings. Her support group consisted of her family who always told her to "work hard, be yourself, and have fun." When they noticed she wasn't doing this they would remind he, but they were careful not to put pressure on her. Her family showed her where her flaws were and gave her support when she was no doing her best, allowing her to do better every day.
"The pressure was on, and I liked it. Correction: I loved it (page 73)," explains Michelle Kwan when she was competing for her first time at worlds. She placed eighth that year. Worlds were her favorite competition, although sometimes she didn't do her best there. When people were expecting everything from her there, she would fall short, but when nobody was paying attention, she would do her best.
` Michelle Kwan learned many things. For one, she learned that she needed to work hard, be herself, and have fun. When she wasn't having fun, she noticed and she'd always do worse. She learned to appreciate everything. Her perspective of the sport needed to change after a while, so she adjusted. Nobody is flawless, but with the right help you can become as close to perfect as you can.

5 out of 5 stars Great book from a great champion!.......2004-11-17

Hard to believe that Michelle is old enough to have an autobiography, but it's a taste of her great record and the hint of promise yet to come. Ignore the troll review below me - if the person isn't a fan of skating, why did he read the book???? Skating champs come and go, but Michelle will be remembered long after she hangs up her skates. Dignified in victory and gracious in "defeat" (since when are Olympic silver and bronze medals a loss????), she exemplifies the word "Champion" both on and off the ice. A must-have for Michelle's fans and for fans of the sport.

    5 out of 5 stars Michelle Kwan.......2003-04-10

In this book it shows Michelle's life as it goes up and down. She takes us inside her life showing what it's like to be a teenage skater. It's not easy! As she wins more competitions she shines out more and more. Suddenly, the pressure is almost unbearable. Watch her as she falls and gets up again even better then she was before! This book is one you definitely don't want to miss!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!.......2003-02-24

I loved reading Michelle Kwan's autobiography. I found it to be very imformative, and I learned even more about this very talented figure skater. It was a great book, and it was so cool to find out about Michelle's first competitions, when she first started skating, her feelings about the sport, and her 1998 Olympic story. Another cool thing about this book was that you could flip the pages and see Michelle Kwan do a triple Lutz. It was cool! I would reccomend this book to any fan of figure skating or Michelle Kwan. Excellent book!

    5 out of 5 stars What Makes A Champion?.......2003-11-21

I must admit that the only time I may have been in awe of athletes was prior to my teenage years.
Never have I pondered over the question, what makes a champion?
However, upon glancing at the table of contents of a book entitled The Heart Of A Champion: Celebrating The Spirit And Character Of Great American Sports Heroes authored by the well-known sports writer and commentator Frank Deford, I was hooked.

Deford has written twelve previous books including novels, biography, sports, social history, humour and has been called the world's greatest sports writer. If you have won the six-time Sportswriter award of the Year and are a member of the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters, being called the greatest sports writer is an understatement.

Sports fans very often treat their sports heroes like demi-gods, however, from the very onset of the book, Deford makes it abundantly clear that athletes are neither gods nor heroes. They are our dream models. As he states: "we imagine ourselves in their places in our daydreams."
Why do many of us look up to our baseball, hockey, basketball or football athletes?

According to Deford, "it is because a sports star is so visible and so beguiling, but also, classical. Athletes not only join us together in this more complicated culture, they connect us to the simpler past. In their glory, they make us feel more whole."

The book is divided into seven sections five of which deal with a particular aspect of what constitutes an essential ingredient of athletic greatness. These five are: commitment, grace, courage, team effort and perseverance.

Within each of these sections Deford refers to athletes who portray a particular attribute that contributes to his or her greatness.

Who can argue that courage is the defining quality of hockey star Mario Lemieux? This Canadian hockey star suffered from excruciating back pains and was forced to undergo two operations. However, what is more amazing is that he overcame the dreadful Hodgkin's decease, a form of cancer and returned to play hockey.

How about Jackie Robinson, who Deford describes as the indisputably single most important athlete in our culture and probably the finest.
The quality of grace is attributed to Robinson, who had to overcome problems with some of his own teammates, blatant racism on the baseball field, and threats from spectators. Nevertheless, he succeeded and paved the way for other African Americans to play in the major leagues.

These are just some of the many seductive stories included in the book along with the 250 full color and black and white photos and illustrations. A book I am sure will find shelf space in the homes and libraries of the many sports enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Tribute Book to Great Athletes.......2002-11-06

Great sports athletes really inspire us. And as I read Frank Deford's inspiring profiles of Cal Ripken, Jr., Tiger Woods, Jerry Rice, Chris Evert, Jackie Robinson, the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team, and ohers, I was again sent back to relive some of the greatest sports moments of my life. The photos enhance the categories of commitment, grace, courage, team effort and perseverance. Frank Deford has captured the enduring spirit of these amazing men and women, and thanks to Wheaties, they ae enshrined in our minds and hearts forever. If you have a sports lover in your family, this is the book to get them this Chrsitmas.

5 out of 5 stars Better than a box of Wheaties.......2002-09-28

Do you remember growing up and hearing about Wheaties, The Breakfast of Champions? We were always told that if we ate our Wheaties, we would grow up to be champions as well. Well, that part of the story never did hold true for me, but the champions that did appear on the front of the cereal box over the years have proved to be an enduring selection of sports heroes who have great stories behind their acheivements.

In this very engaging and beautifully photographed book, the front of the Wheaties' boxes that I remember as a child have come to life. The author, Frank Deford, has written great essays to allow us to better understand the underlying stories behind the athletic acheivements of these memorable champions of sports.

Interestingly enough, I am not a big follower of sports and originally purchased this book as an early Christmas gift for my brother. Sitting down for a cup of coffee, I became involved with the book and found myself enjoying the well written stories and great historical photos. I've decided to keep this copy, and I'll buy my brothers and nephews additional copies for their own use. I'm sure they will enjoy the great gift.

I highly recommend this book. Trust me, it is much better than reading the back of the Wheaties box while enjoying a bowl of cereal.

this is the greatest book ever!"Pokemon" will remain a favorite long after so-called fads like "Simpsons" and "Fairly Oddparents" have been tossed aside for better things.Who needs the so-so "South Park" junk..the ho-hum "Spongebob Squarepants" and the awfully boring"Simpsons" when you can have something exciting like "Pokemon"?Forget the dull "Futurama" garbage and the yawn-inducing adult anime schlock-if you want something exciting-stick with "Pokemon".

    4 out of 5 stars I love Tracey!.......2001-03-04
