Book Description
Is it possible to rescue your career and restore your reputation after a major professional setback? In an age when we're bombarded with press accounts of disgraced CEOs, politicians, and celebrities, this question is more important than ever. In Firing Back, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld and Andrew Ward lay out a novel five-step recovery process: "Fight, not flight" (face the difficult situation), "Recruit others into battle" (enlist the right assistance), "Rebuild heroic stature" (spread the true nature of the adversity), "Prove your mettle" (regain trust and credibility), and "Rediscover the heroic mission" (clear the past and chart the future).
Anchored in original research and decades of scholarly studies across fields, this book is packed with engrossing stories and first-hand accounts from humbled CEOs and executives from firms as esteemed as GE, The Home Depot, Morgan Stanley, Apple, Staples, and Hewlett-Packard, Firing Back offers a clear plan for any businessperson who needs to recover from career setbacks and reclaim lost prestige and reputation. The authors also identify common barriers to recovery that even seasoned executives can fall prey to, and explain how to surmount them.

Rx: give it to a young manager.......2007-09-21
A profound study of CEO career setbacks and comebacks. As we are all CEOs of our own lives, there is no one who wouldn't profit from a close read, and re-read, of this excellent volume, including the latest fallen, e.g Michael Vick, Alberto Gonzales, Don Imus, Dan Rather, etc.
Many great quotes, Eastern wisdom to Broadway, telling anecdotes and insightful studies contained herein, but more than just anecdotes, the authors lay out a five-step blueprint on making a comeback: 1) fight, don't flee, 2) recruit others to help, 3) rebuild heroic stature, 4) prove your mettle and 5) rediscover your heroic mission.
Highly recommended. Rx: give it to a young manager, may just save him/her tons of grief down the road. Review by John A. Sarkett, author, Extraordinary Comebacks.
Did An Editor Read This Book?.......2007-08-24
I'm about a third of the way through this book and have had to stop reading several times, in sheer amazement. Was an editor from Harvard Press involved in this publication at all? It's full of run-on sentences, missing words, typos, repetitions (sometimes within the same sentence) and just plain bad writing.
I've come to expect grammar and spelling mistakes in popular fiction, but these authors should know better -- they're university professors. This book is just astoundingly badly edited. The authors need to pull it off the market, have someone go through it who knows how to write, and issue a revised version. Their many good points are being lost in the debris of poor composition.
Adequate.......2007-04-15
I bought this from a magazine recommendation. The recommendation highlighted the telling of past business titans who had failed and how they rebounded. I assumed I would have chapters on each different story, a beginning, middle and end. Instead, this is more a business management book on the theoretical discussion of comebacks, why some work and some don't. The business biographies are there, but they are told in short staccato versions to prove a point and not fully explored. Nothing wrong with that, just not what I had hoped for. For others, this book will be perfect. But if you are looking for multiple business biographies as was I, this is not for you.
A deep understaning of CEOs as humans.......2007-03-08
Unfortunately, much of the literature on CEOs depicts them as either Gods , demons or idiots. I have worked with many CEOs and have found them to be human beings - just like the rest of us. Jeff Sonnenfeld is one of the few authors who has actually interacted with hundreds of CEOs. This book depicts the 'human drama' of success and failure at the top of the executive world. It also has lessons about defeat, courage and perserverence that we can all use. Lots of books talk about what we can learn from success stories - few talk about what we can learn when we fail. From my experince, most of of learning comes from our losses - not our victories. We will all face adversity. We will all fail. 'Firing Back' gives us some great ideas about how to make a comeback when that happens.
You get what is expected with minor detractors.......2007-02-21
Sonnefeld and Ward deliver a book who's title delivers exactly what you would expect; understanding failure, how to reconstruct, rebound and fire back. Though the first 2/3rd of the book great care is taken to acknowledge failure and the barriers faced in an organization on the path to recovery. These are the most poignant sections considering most people rarely see the true causes of mistakes and the barriers they face in correcting them. In the remaining 1/3rd the rebuilding of your heroic stature is approached.
This is a 4 star book on merit of its content though given a 3 star rating because of dueling writing styles among the two authors and overuse of underdeveloped examples making portions of the book an awkward read.

a little TMI but really good........2007-10-10
I was really excited to start getting the most out of my new rebounder. I purchased this book expecting just new exercises to keep the workout fun. This book went beyond every expectation. Not only does it have good moves for the rebounder but 75% of the book is all about why rebounding is the best exercise for your entire body. The contents include studies conducted by NASA and the author's own research. I was pretty blown away at how incredible rebounding can be for every cell in the body. The author goes over every system of the body which can be a little dry but the last paragraphs always bring it back to the subject. Overall, I loved it!
REBOUND EXERCISE-THE ULTIMATE EXERCISE FOR THE NEW MILLENIUM.......2007-01-09
Easy to read. Exciting information for anyone looking for an alternative to difficult exercise programs in order to stay healthy and physically fit. Pulls together research that validates the principles and advantages of rebound exercise in Chapter 14.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-04-04
Ray Wisniewski is growing up in the Polish-American town of Greenville, New Jersey. His game is basketball, but he is in the minority. All the black kids play basketball. Ray's supposed to be into wrestling like the white kids.
Basketball - Ray lives and breathes basketball. He plays pick-up games and organized ball, whatever kind of game he can rustle up. His only disappointment is that he has never been able to make the varsity team. He tries out and plays his best, but Coach Malovic never picks him. Finally, during Ray's senior year a new coach is hired, and Ray is suddenly one of the starting five.
Another surprise is the attention Ray is getting from the cutest and most popular girl in school, Stacy. He never considered even talking to her -- much less dating her -- but his luck is changing. It isn't until his first date with Stacy that Ray begins to realize that some people are bothered by the fact that he has perhaps crossed some sort of line by playing basketball instead of choosing the more "white" path of joining the wrestling team. Even Walter, his best friend, seems to be keeping his distance.
Early on, REBOUND is non-stop basketball action. Bob Krech shows Ray playing constantly in an effort to make the high school team. As the book progresses, another dimension begins to appear -- prejudice. Racial tension begins to rear its ugly head between players, friends, coaches, and parents. Ray finds out that not everyone is happy with just basketball and the competition on the court. The real world and its sometimes hateful nature cast a shadow over his success.
Readers who enjoy good basketball play-by-play action will be hooked at the beginning of REBOUND. Hopefully, they will connect with Ray as a person, too, and stick around to see what lurks beneath the surface of the basketball action.

Heart-thumpingly terrific! Fast-paced court action, and solid, credible off-court high school experiences. Krech knows kids. A real winner!
Satisfying story of sports interactions and change........2006-12-10
Bob Krech's REBOUND tells of basketball dreams, a Polish boy's determination to fight prejudice to make the team, and a new coach who allows him to compete. As Ray's game improves he uncovers truths about prejudice and appearances which will change his life in this satisfying story of sports interactions and change.

The book taught me alot. I can REBOUND!.......2000-06-07
I think George Karl wrote a very exelent book on the proper way to fight for a rebound. He taught me how to position, how to time, how to stand, and how to jump for a rebound. The drills taught to me in this book helped me do all these things and much much more. My speed and agility were increased from practicing the rebounding drills. Before reeding this book I was unable to get rebounds with any regularity or consistency. Now with techniques from George Karl's book "101 Basketball Rebounding Drills" I am a constant competitor for a rebound.

Gripping saga.......2003-11-11
The very first pages of this novel are emotionally gripping. The heroine is in shock at first and it takes some effort for the chivalrous brother of the absent groom to get some response. The storyline is interesting and well-thought out. Michelle Reid gives her characters very intense and identifiable emotions. I enjoyed this book very much.
Try another by this author.......2002-12-18
Back Cover description: INSTANT BRIDEGROOM. Shaan had been jilted! She'd been left at the alter by Piers Danvers...but Rafe Danvers was waiting to step right into his half brother's shoes. Older, darker, stronger and head of the Danvers business empire, it was Rafe who had persuaded Piers to abandon Shaan. Now, with the same ruthless determination, Rafe insisted that she become his bride instead. Dazed, Shaan accepted his proposal, but she was also confused: until this moment, Rafe had acted as if he despised her. Suddenly he wanted to proclaim her to the world as his wife and, behind closed doors, to have her in his bed!
Not her best. I didn't like this one. It was predictable and I couldn't like either character. She had no backbone, and he was manipulative/sly--not uncommon with these books, but not what I expected from a Michelle Reid story. However, I have read 5 of her other books, and this is the first I didn't like, so I will try her again.
Obnoxious s.o.b. hero, slow heroine........2000-08-20
Rafe Danvers had disliked Shaan Saketa from the first moment he met her, on the arm of Piers Dancers, his brother. When Piers jults Shaan hours before their wedding, Rafe takes over, bullying a shocked Shaan into marriage to him. As the shock wears off, Shaan begins to feel love for Rafe. Then she overhears a damning phone conversation that implies that Rafe is in love with his brother's new wife and that he has been stuck with the "leftovers".
A bit over the top as Rafe takes ruthless advantage of Shaan's shock to get his own way. Shaan lacks maturity and Rafe is obsessive. The book harks back to the early days of Harlequin Presents when the heroes could and did do whatever they wanted in the name of love, the heroine's feelings bedamned.
Fabulous read.......1999-05-31
Reid has created a hero worth falling in love with and a heroine who is his perfect complement. Shaan is left at the altar by her handsome groom, Piers, who marries another woman. Piers' brooding brother, Rafe, steps in and convinces the devastated bride to marry him instead. Shaan is determined not to see the truth---that Rafe loves her deeply---because she is in a distraught haze over Piers' desertion and over her belief that Rafe is really in love with the woman Piers has married. Rafe uses whatever means necessary---bullying, coddling, spoiling---to restore Shaan's self-esteem and force her out of her despondency. The newspapers add to Shaan's unhappiness by reporting that the wealthy brothers have switched brides, which, coupled with other twists and turns, leads to a final confrontation involving the three major characters. Why did Piers leave? Does he love Shaan? Does Shaan love Rafe or will her heart forever belong to Piers? What is the relationship between Piers' wife and Rafe? What really caused all of these problems to begin with? This book keeps you turning page after page to discover the answers. The plot is delicious, the characters are very well-drawn and the book is incredibly satisfying. I dispose of most Harlequin books right after I read them. This one is a keeper. Buy it!

Not That Helpful.......2004-11-19
Though this book is graphically interesting (spiral bound, die-cut corners, colorful, cool illustrations), the meat of the book leaves a lot to be desired. This in no way will help you get over anyone - it will merely give you a few laughs. If it is suppose to be a guided journal, it falls short. The authors only leave about five lines per entry to write your thoughts and / or responses - not nearly enough for someone who really needs a good purge. It was a total waste of money as far as I'm concerned.
If you're looking for a similar book, I'd suggest "The Breakup Diary." I bought both of them and - though it seems that "The Rebound Journal" borrows much of its content from "The Breakup Diary" (the Breakup Diary came out more than a year earlier) - "The Breakup Diary" is a lot more thorough and helpful.
Also, you might want to consider buying your own blank journal and checking out "How to Survive the Loss of a Love," or "Letting Go." Both helped me IMMENSELY. "Letting Go" has a lot of great exercises that really helped me get over my ex. If you're looking for a funny book, I'd get "A Girl's Guide to Surviving a Breakup."
Just an opinion from a girl recently going through a breakup.
Smart, funny, and really works!.......2003-10-20
Unlike a lot of the other breakup advice books out there (and I've tried a lot of 'em!), this book actually works. It's smart and funny, and instead of making you bitter at your ex, it helps you focus on how wonderful, intelligent, desirable, and witty YOU are. And that attitude is far more healthy and conducive to getting over your ex than sitting around moping! I've been recommending this book to all my girlfriends.
Smart and Funny.......2003-10-09
Breakup blues be gone! I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard. This book is full of smarts and wit without the usual tiresome references of crying into a pint of Hagen Das. It's worth breaking up just to read!
The Perfect Gift.......2003-10-07
Breaking up just got a whole lot better. This journal helps put the spunk back in your step and the confidence in your dance moves. And, -- it's the best gift to cure a broken heart.
Fun read.......2003-10-07
Fun to read, I recommend it to newly single babes everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
I understand if you don't believe this , but :.......2005-09-04
My Mom had a type of Hodgkins Disease. Her doctor's treatments left her constantly tired and rapidly losing weight. I brought her a rebounder and had her do a gentle seated bounce,(never actually leaving the rebounder). Her energy came back, her weight normalized. The doctor's treatment-doses were immediately lowered, and soon discontinued. She was 80 at the time, and now is healthy 85. Even if it's a coincidence, it's the safest treatment ever, and for non-athletic movements, the discount-store models for as low as $25 are fine.
How rebound affects the lymphatic system.......2000-09-28
Information I just recieved; "The lymphatics are the most important part of the natural immune system. Like tubes, they rum paralel with the body's arteries. It's their job to wash, clean, and feed the cells. After "vacuming" the cells, they transport the cell food (oxygen) through the tubes using a glucose type substance. If one gets cancer, the lymphs stop transporting the oxygen and the glucose ferments. The cancer "feeds" on that fermented glucose, grows until it kills the patient. The only exercise that gets the lymphatics to working again and stops cancer growth, is "rebound". If this is true, and this writer believes it to be, anyone who uses the trampoline can avoid cancer, or maybe even heal it if one already has it, or if it's not too late and the decay hasn'lt yet reached the vital organs. I believe this book to be truly "futuristic" and a "must" for everyone who fears the dreaded killer, "cancer". I do not know the writer, but would like to meet him someday and share ideas. It's sad to watch folks suffer needlessly and die prematuraly because of a lack of free choice in medical care and because of the one philosophy medical system we have in America, and how it's become a monopoly,(without competition). The "choice" is in treatments. When we have cancer for instance, no matter how many doctors we see, they "all" treat us the same, with rediation and chemothrapy. For a free choice, we must be able to go to a doctor of a different philosophy who will give us different and safer treatments. A very viable second philosophy has existed for many dacdes in Europe, but it's not allowed in america. Why?
Rebound, the new age medicine!.......2000-07-08
I discovered 20 years ago about the medical effects of rebound. I was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer,(hodgkins desease). My doctor informed me that I must have radiation and chemo. treatments after xrays. I refused the first step that I knew would lead me down the road to my doom. I stopped eating and went on a veggie and fruit juice fast for two months. All the swelling of my lympth nodes went down, but the soreness remained. My guarding angel led me to a German Homeopathic Doctor who, with one treatment, knocked it out. The cost was $42.00. I was not cured because there is no such word as "cure." Once the symptoms appear, it's already too late, I became symptom free. I changed my eating habits and got a small trampoline, and have not only remained symptom free since, but healthier at 72 than I was at twenty. I need no other exercise. Rebounding is the only exercise that keeps my lymphatics working as it should. This book is the best of it's kind and will in time, prove to be the "Bible of new age medicine!"
