Book Description
Though management expert Margaret J. Wheatley works with an unusually broad variety of clients, from Fortune 100 CEOs to ministers, she points out that they all struggle to maintain integrity, humanity, and effectiveness in a relentlessly fast-paced, technology-driven world. Credited with establishing a fundamentally new approach to leadership based on living systems theory — or, as she puts it, "how Life organizes" — Wheatley shares her first-ever compendium of essays about her real-world experiences helping clients introduce more authentic, life-affirming practices into their organizations. Essays cover a wide scope of topics including leadership strategies, raising children in turbulent times, and the role of communities in the lives of organizations. Finding Our Way is filled with a wealth of practical advice on applying the ideas in Wheatley's groundbreaking books and has particular relevance for managers, administrators, and leaders who are trying to run their organizations in more progressive, egalitarian, and effective ways.

Reaching toward holism.......2007-10-06
Margaret Wheatley offers reflective essays that are both intellectual and heartfully personal. She reminds us that organizations are full of people struggling to be whole, and hence the best way to create healthy, well-functioning organizations (be they companies, schools, or community groups) is to adopt a holistic approach. (Holistic is actually my word, not Wheatley's, but the text speaks in that way to me). Holism in this context is about inclusion, respect, accepting the messiness of relationships, and always thinking in a larger context rather than getting burdened with trivialities. Life actually knows how to solve problems just fine -- it is usually our own attempts at controlling and planning that interfere with the natural process. Wheatley's essays offer relief to the anxious minds of leaders who think they have to know everything, be fully in charge, and "create" the future.
Visionary.......2007-05-12
Margaret J Wheatley beautifully weaves the compassion of a wise woman with the insight of a true visionary to deliver a very moving message. The new paradigm of leadership Ms. Wheatley describes embraces all citizens, creates harmony, and compels each member to become their best authentic self. Regardless of your structure: business, family, corporate, or government, your environment will benefit from this philosophy, individually and collectively. I found a shift in my perspective and the tools to take it to the streets. Ms. Wheatleys elegant writing inspires us to be better and do better.
refreshing honesty.......2007-01-31
Some reviewers have called for a "management book" -- that's the last thing we need. What I love about Wheatley is that she goes where no one else goes, and creates a path. For that reason, I use this book with my senior seminar leadership students in an effort to send them out into the world to do the same.
Disappointing.......2006-06-02
I was all set to fall in love with Finding Our Way: Leadership in Uncertain Times by Margaret Wheatley. A friend had recommended Wheatley, and I have spent the last several years researching the interplay between systems thinking, connectionism, quality, leadership and learning. I've been reading Deming, Keynes, Bateson, Prigogine and Karl Polanyi. I had just come out of a three week period of intensive training, leading and facilitating a group of software users in gathering user requirements and system modeling. The book was brand new and available at the library.
Finding Our Way is, unfortunately, a compendium of nebulous generalities. In trying to make the case for self-organizing systems as models for human organization, the "new story" falls short. I can't help but note that mobs, riots and panics are self-organizing.
The ideas may be relevant and Wheatley's descriptions of current conditions seem accurate, but the presentation and writing style make for a rather mushy, second-rate management book. Maybe I've been spoiled by the fabulous work of the writers cited above. I fear the author misses the irony of Thera, her model "nature-based" civilization, being destroyed by a volcano.
I had been hoping for a more specific, detailed, and perhaps case-based book on how to actually lead in the midst of chaos. Perhaps, as other reviewers have indicated, her other books are more serious, and I will certainly take a stab at Leadership and the New Science. Finding Our Way does have this to recommend it: it's so fluffy, one can probably get through it at one sitting.
Good!.......2006-02-06
This book is very impressive because of the writer's attitude towords the world. Good for everybody who read this book!
Book Description
Is praying a duty or a delight?J. I. Packer and Carolyn Nystrom say that it's both; an essential, expected practice as a follower of Christ, but also a privilege and joy. As we start out learning to pray properly, however, the delight often seems to be missing. Here is practical help for active, honest praying that involves all of who we are--heart, hands and head--and moves us to deeper obedience, joy and intimacy with our Father.

"Written to make you think and consider why we speak to God".......2006-09-06
One cannot help appreciating the seriousness with which the authors address our need to pray. The material presented is not so much new material (it's prayer, you know) as it is material arranged in a manner to make you THINK.
Although I prefer "God, Help Me Pray" (because of the format) this book will appeal to those who see prayer as more of a science than an art. But make no mistake, you will pick up some interesting tidbits if you're willing to read and study this book carefully.

Book Description
This book is about change. It is about the change teachers create and experience as they move toward a more flexible, interpretive view of their roles. The articles were written by practicing teachers who have examined some of the uncertainties and problems they encountered when moving from a traditional to a holistic perspective in their teaching.
These teachers have written in order to share their questions, the conflicts they have undergone, and the change in beliefs that are part of becoming learner-directed teachers. The binding thread of the collection is the realization that teaching is a learning enterprise, and that teachers learn from their students, from each other, and ultimately from themselves.

Finding Our Way.......2004-07-27
Whether they take place in a Georgia town or in Texas on the Mexican border, the short stories in FINDING OUR WAY will introduce readers to some very interesting people. Among them are Chuy, who is determined to get kicked out of school; Melly, who is determined to be the first girl to take the Dive; and Andy and Ruthie, who find that being a couple takes on different meaning on the night of their school prom. The last story involves a shocking and unfortunate tragedy that will bring everyone in the community closer together.
These educational and bold stories take twisting turns, and they always seem to have a lesson. You should read this book because some of the lessons you will learn could be very useful later in your life.

Finding Our Way.......2004-04-16
Saldana's Finding Our Way is a collection of short stories that relate to young adults having to mature quickly and live life as it comes. Each character develops in their own unique way when dealing with daily dramas regarding love, death, pride and ethics. Through these short stories the reader can appreciate the importance of parents and family figures. In "Chuy's Beginnins" Chuy is a young boy who constantly gets in trouble at school to draw the attention he does not get at home. Being so used to always getting his way;he is strongly disturbed and becomes a different person when he creates a confrontation he cannot solve between his principal and teacher. Having to prove something to oneself by doing something dangerous is most common when young. The tricky part is how you manage the situation. "The Dive" is a great example of what many young adults go through in life. In this story Melly is a young girl who speaks her mind out loud and feels like she must prove her self to be a grown woman by jumping off a bridge. With the help of Mama Tochi and her cuentos, "stories that somehow served as life lessons", Melly finds her way through her troubles. most characters in the collection have positive outcomes; Saldana adds a twist to the collection in the story "Manny Calls". Manny is ayoung adult who is portrayed as a mysterious, isolated person who is away from home and loses his one and only confidant. The dath of his grandfather and the lack of attention and moral support from others keep him from wanting to face reality. After two years of calling his grandfather's old phone number it finally gets reassigned and Manny finds himself trying to figure out a new way to communicate with his dead grandfather. Saldana's collecion of short stories obtain a significant message within that allow young and mature readers to discover, reminisce and appreciate the imprtance of role models and moral support.
Straight from the border.......2004-03-30
"Finding Our Way" exemplifies the true meaning of living as true Latino/Hispanics in America. The author, Rene Saldana sets the stage by talking about true stories that actually makes the reader feel at home especially in Chapter 4, "Los Twelve Days of Christmas." The true minority groups still remains with these "Latino students" who find themselves surrounded by the upper scale of minority teachers, who themselves segregate themselves from teaching these teenagers about "chances" in life. Instead, these two teachers decide that it is best "not to give these teenagers a chance" at the end.
"Inspiring" and "Worth Reading"....
Finding Our Way Review.......2004-03-26
Finding Our Way, a collection of short stories, written by Rene Saldana, Jr., presents a variety of themes and life lessons for adolescents who face many obstacles while growing up. For some teens the problems may entail misbehavior, low self esteem or lack of courage. For others it may be losing a loved one or a peer. Some may even have to confront fighting and gangs. All of these scenarios are addressed in Finding Our Way.
The book begins with "The Good Samaritan," where Rey is forced to decide between what is the right thing to do, and what is the just thing to do. He is constantly doing favors for Mr. Sanchez and has yet to receive any compensation. Rey swears he will never do any more favors for the local politico because he never comes through with his promises of payback. However, when Rey discovers Mr. Sanchez in yet another predicament he finds himself in a mental dilemma. In the end he has to decide between being a good samaritan by helping Mr. Sanchez despite his harsh feelings toward him, or leaving him stranded.
"Alternative" and "Un Faite" are impressive stories that set a worthy example for young readers. In "Alternative" Arturo is a student that was sent to an alternative school for repeated misbehavior. He blames Mr. Sifuentes for sending him to the alternative program, even though he was the one who overreacted and caused the scene in class. Even though Arturo seems to have unpleasant feelings for Mr. Sifuentes, towards the end it becomes clear that he actually likes and respects him. Arturo is obviously not an ideal student and even after the big scene he causes in class, Mr. Sifuentes still sent him the stories to finish, proving that he has not given up and is dedicated to being a good teacher. In "Un Faite" Kiko is a teenager who wants very badly to start over and reinvent himself at a new school. He has faced numerous problems and had been involved with his cousin in a gang. This is an excellent story of a teen deciding to change his life around before it is too late.
The stories "Manny Calls" and "Finding Our Way" deal with the reality of losing people in our lives. Manny has lost his grandfather whom he loved and respected greatly. Throughout "Finding Our Way" several friends have to deal with losing their classmate Danny. Death can be a very harsh reality for young adults to accept.
Those are several of the eleven short stories in Saldana's Finding Our Way, all of which teach valuable life lessons and serve as encouragement to the young readers. The book contains a wide variety of situations that young adults face on a daily basis. Finding Our Way serves a meaning full purpose that can set a great example for a young audience.
Finding Our Way feeds Teenage Pessimism.......2004-03-17
I was surprised with the level of pessimism in René Saldana's collection of stories, Finding Our Way. After all, the title of this book is optimistic: characters are finding their ways, not just looking. Yet the stories themselves reek of the melodrama we so often see in teenagers. Saldana may have intended to teach young adults to look into themselves and find their inner strengths, but instead he makes readers feel as if any emotional connection to peers and family members would only be a hindrance in this path to self-discovery.
Parents, filtered through the narrators' points of view, are portrayed as only a teenager could view them. Parents are mean, unfair, and incapable of serving their children's needs. In "Alternative," Arturo writes bitterly, "...he ain't my mother/But neither is my mother/Who turned me over to the cops" (p. 58) He never mentioned the anguish she must have gone through each time he got in trouble, or how huge the decision to send him to Alternative must have been. We only see his side of the story, so we want to side with him and believe his mother was a traitor.
This refusal to connect and empathize with others does not only apply with parents, but with their peers. Many of Saldana's characters are antisocial; others become so focused on themselves they forget their friends and significant others. In "Un Faite," only the thought of moving to Mission keeps Kiko's behavior in check. His friends not coming to his aid does not bother him, because soon he will be gone and they will not have him around to mistreat. Also to be disposed of is Kiko's girlfriend, Janie. She already thinks she is in love, but he is counting down the days until he can say goodbye. After all, "...if things went the way he wanted, she'd soon be part of his past..." (p. 72) He does not give a second thought to whether she will hurt, only about what his new life will be like.
As I read Finding Our Way, I was reminded of my difficult teenage years-a time when I felt nobody understood me. The bigger problem was, upon finishing the book, I still felt the same. At the end of each story, each character may no longer have been lost, but they were still alone. For this pessimism, I cannot recommend Finding Our Way. Parents looking for literature for their own teenager should beware that this book may very well fuel their rebellion. Perhaps in a classroom setting, where each individual story can be discussed at length, may its optimistic messages be uncovered.

Great Reference with Easy & Practical Advice!.......2007-08-10
Wonderful book stuffed full of easy and practical advice. I couldn't put it down. It's fun writing style makes turning each page a treat in itself. It's obvious why this book won the 06 ASA Literary Work of the Year. It's a gem! ENJOY!! Joanna Keating-Velasco, Author, A Is for Autism, F Is for Friend.
Read This Book!!!.......2006-10-10
Quit reading these reviews and get this book! Every parent or professional who advocates for individuals on the autism spectrum needs to read, underline, and share this book with someone else. Parents will realize they are not alone in their feelings and experiences and professionals will gain much needed insight into the lives of the families who sit with them in IEP meetings and parent-teacher conferences.
I can't say enough good things about the practical advice in Ms. Sakai's book. For example, her chapter on tools for building a relationship with the school is priceless.
"Finding Our Way" is a unique resource that earns a spot on the "must have" list of books about Asperger Syndrome.
Truly a Major Godsend! .......2005-09-16
This is an excellent teaching tool for families with children who have Asperger's Syndrome. Kristi Sakai, the mother of three children with Asperger's provides excellent tips; explanations and vivid vignettes describing spectrum behavior. The book also includes funny little drawings that are clear and direct and people on the spectrum should have no difficulty decoding their expressions. I love this book!
Kristi Sakai was blessed with the gift of humor. Humor is one impetus that keeps this book rolling. I love her quick quips for judgmental comments people endure when their child is suffering during a meltdown or having trouble navigating on social territory. This book really is a Godsend!
One part that made me laugh was when Sakai wrote about a boy who disliked baths because of sensory issues and provided very real, very legitimate reasons for why he resisted enduring them. I also like the way she provided an alternative approach to ensure his cooperation during an unpleasant activity. The part that had me laughing was when she said her daughter Kaede, upon being needled about not liking to have her hair washed, said she didn't have to suffer that unpleasant activity - she poured the shampoo down the sink! (Sounds like the kind of thing I would have done - only I poured shampoo in the toilet at that age or in the tub and said it was bubble bath). In all honesty, hair washing is about the least favorite activity of many, myself included.
Regardless of where on the spectrum you are, on or off or someone directly involved with people who do have Asperger's, you will get a lot of mileage out of this book and will often turn to it. It is one of the best teaching guides I have ever come across.
Nothing But Good News.......2005-09-11
It takes a wise person to see the good news in the great struggles of living and Kristi Sakai has done it. Without offering any pat answers or any new "isms" she is able to show families with children with Asperger Syndrome what it means to not only survive but thrive. There is nothing in this book but good news and authentic observations. Obviously adept in the clinical and psychological issues affecting persons with AS, Mrs. Sakai takes you into her home and her heart and wants you to know that there is genuine hope and real help for you. Get it while you can. It's going fast, folks!
Full of wit and wisdom! Required reading!.......2005-08-11
This is a must read for anyone who loves or cares for a child with asperger syndrome, be they parent, teacher, paraprofessional, babysitter, grandparent, Sunday School teacher or doctor. Written by one who has been down in the trenches and knows, this book is packed full of logical, doable and compassionate systems which parents can easily master in order to facilitate a more enjoyable existence for the whole family. You will feel like you have a found a new friend as you laugh at her poignant insights and find comfort in the shared experiences of aspergers. Evaluators and doctors would do well to hand this one out to parents of newly diagnosed children to serve as a soft cushion to ease the fall from what can be a devastating diagnosis. Ms. Sakai is a true friend who will help light a path to a way through what can be a dark time and find solace on the other side. Bravo!
Book Description
Written in an intimate, personal style, Finding Our Way Home draws on powerful insights from psychology, Christian spirituality, and theology to explore the human longing for home, a spiritual place as much as a physical place where we are at peace with ourselves and with God. Mark McMinn considers the different aspects of home as a spiritual metaphor¾the environment we grew up in as well as the challenges of living well within our present realities. In doing so, he addresses the yearning for a spiritual center, a deeper relationship with God, and peace in our lives.

A Map for the Inner Journey, for Seekers and Guides Alike
Written with warmth, compassion, and deep understanding, this book offers a map of the inner journey for exploring the time-honored practice of spiritual guidance. Carol Ochs and Rabbi Kerry M. Olitzky speak both to those who seek a Jewish perspective on the spiritual life and those who wish to guide others in this search. Drawing deeply on the riches of the Torah and other important Jewish sources, Jewish Spiritual Guidance offers wisdom and insight to all religious seekers?lay and ordained, Jewish and non-Jewish.
They examine the broad principles of spiritual guidance, describing it as the journey of two people?seeker and guide?through the wilderness toward God. The central relationship is not between the seeker and the guide but between the seeker and God. The guide is a companion who helps the seeker discover patterns, articulate insights, and remain faithful. All the lessons that the guide teaches the seeker are lessons that the guide is also learning, again and again.
This much-needed resource will not only nourish the seeker-guide relationship but also inspire discussions in adult education classes, minyanim, and prayer groups. All religious seekers will find wisdom and understanding through this illuminating book.

Spiritual Friendship from the Jewish Perspective.......2005-05-05
Ochs and Olitzky clearly state their purpose in the preface to "Jewish Spiritual Guidance: Finding Our Way to God." "The purposes of this book are to explain what spiritual guidance is, to encourage people to seek it out, to aid them in supporting one another, and to help prepare them to serve as spiritual guides if that is their calling" (p. vii).
They also concisely define spiritual guidance in the first line of their introduction. "We have no concern more central than to live our lives in a deepening relationship with God" (p. 1). They further develop their focus in chapter one, "Spiritual Guidance is the process that helps us to recognize God's direction, which is there for us if only we can be open to it. Spiritual guidance is a relationship between a spiritual guide and a seeker that is focused on the growth of the seeker" (p. 11). Noticing how few spiritual guides in Jewish circles were equipped for this task, Ochs and Olitzky write to fill that void.
Notice in their definitions and descriptions that they are not confusing spiritual guidance with psychological therapy. Modern therapy tends to be problem-saturated and solution-focused. "You have a problem; we'll help you find the answer." Jewish spiritual direction, like all religious spiritual direction, is God-saturated and journey-focused. "You have a longing for God who also longs for intimacy with you; together we'll explore spiritual roadmaps on your journey that help you to connect to and follow God more humbly, wisely, and peacefully."
Practical chapters on topics such as prayer, listening, recognizing the spiritual path, overcoming fears, revisiting the image of God, studying sacred texts, encountering temptation, enduring the spiritual desert, and living in community offer understandable theory and usable methods for spiritual guidance. A concluding appendix, "The God Questionnaire" is worth the price of an already worthy book.
Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Soul Physicians: A Theology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," "Spiritual Friends: A Methodology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction," and the forthcoming "Sacred Companions: A History of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."
Valuable.......1998-03-01
As a reader with no biblical training apart from being brought up in a Judeo-Christian culture, I found this book accessible and relevant. It helps make the bible seem more like metaphors for modern life than I would have expected. This book could even be viewed as a self-help book with a "god" spin on it. There is thoroughness and simplicity in the presentation, with digestible sections addressing different aspects of the topic.

Holiness and Sly Homor: Quite A Combination.......2005-11-07
I have read many in this series of "On Retreat With" books. This ranks very near the best (just below St. John the Evangelist and Brother Lawrence, but above many others).
This volume is written with insight, humor, and conviction. The author is masterful in having us immediately believe (yea, know), that we are in continuing, enjoyable, joyful, healing contact with St. Anthony. She makes him present to us -- what higher praise could I give?
I spent a week on retreat in the presence of St. Anthony. He was with me before, but he now continues with me on a deeper, more personal level.
This volume receives an unqualified recommendation.
Book Description
The ancient rabbis believed that the world rests on three pillars: study, worship, and good deeds. It is said that the greatest of these is study, for it leads to the other two. But exactly how does the modern Jewish reader go about studying the Mishnah, Talmud, and Midrash --- the great ancient and often hard-to-comprehend texts of our tradition? And how do we glean the great insights and wisdom from these sacred texts, which inspired our ancestors, and apply them to our modern lives?
With guidance from renowned author and educator Barry Holtz, these ancient texts take on new meaning for us. He provides a framework for exploring our thinking about God, prayer, and ritual, as well as social issues, such as charity, friendship, and justice. His new study guide helps readers and study groups launch their exploration of the ancient texts, posing probing questions to help them stay engaged as they pursue their quest for a deeper understanding of their faith.
This spiritual and spirited book, a sequel to Holtz's classic Back to the Sources, is a must-read for adult Jewish learners and educators alike.

Book Description
Toward Wisdom addresses the nature of wisdom, humanity's need for it, and ways and means of developing it.
The situation the world faces today is extremely complex. Long-cherished values have begun to conflict with each other: material comfort vs. an uncontaminated world; economic growth now vs. economic well-being for our grandchildren. Toward Wisdom takes the position that the only way to make the world a better place is to make it a wiser place. Wisdom is no longer an option or a frill. We, and the world, need wisdom-based analyses of our problems followed by wisdom-based action.
In the past, becoming wise was left to chance; a few people became wise before they died, but most did not. This lackadaisical approach will no longer do. Wisdom can be developed intentionally, and Toward Wisdom shows us how. The book examines some of the key impediments to wisdom; what they are, how they work, how they came to be; and introduces us to techniques for getting beyond them.
