Beating to Our Own Drum!.......2006-03-04
I bought this for my daughter in England as a surprise gift. From the moment we put it on, she loved it! Almost every day she asks for the "Bop Book" and I happily oblige. It's a wonderful book and CD to get your preschooler away from the t.v. and into some exercise!

It would seem a riddle worthy of the sphinx: how do you give children a sense of jazz music without playing a note? Chris Raschka answers loudly and clearly with the illustrated, syncopated Charlie Parker Played Be Bop. This sparse, rhythmic, repetitive text (inspired by a recording of Parker's "A Night in Tunisia") embraces and reflects the sound and feel of jazz when read aloud: "Charlie Parker played be bop. / Charlie Parker played saxophone. / The music sounded like be bop. / Never leave your cat alone." Whether in complete phrases or in nonsense refrains that taste like music in your mouth ("Alphabet alphabet, alphabet, alph, / Chickadee, chickadee, chickadee, chick, / Overshoes, overshoes, overshoes, o, / Reeti-footi, reeti-footi, reeti-footi, ree."), Raschka brings melody to the page, and rhythm to eager ears.
Raschka, whose Yo! Yes? won a Caldecott Honor, and whose Mysterious Thelonious--another ebullient, musical exploration of a jazz legend--was named a 1997 ALA Notable Book, proves once again that he is just as at home with a paintbrush as he is with a pen. His bold, quirky illustrations add movement and light to the words, buoying their already lyrical effect. Charlie Parker Played Be Bop is a colorful, whimsical romp through the world of jazz, sure to set young and old toes a-tapping. (Ages 4 to 8) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
Ever hear of Charlie Parker? The great jazz saxophone player? If you have or if you haven't, it's okay. Look at this board book and you'll hear Charlie Parker; you'll hear music in your mind. "Be bop. Fisk, fisk. Lollipop. Boomba, boomba." Look. That's Charlie swinging and spinning all over the pages. And that's Charlie's cat, waiting, waiting for him to come home....

My baby loves Charlie Parker.......2007-09-18
I wasn't sure how my little one would respond to this book even though I love it. If I ask, "Do you want to read about Charlie Parker?," she lights up and starts literally starts to bop. The baby digs it. Just more evidence that the jazz is a universal language. I like the introduction to poetry, rhythm and randomness ("Never leave your cat alone"). I bought two other copies and gave them to my friends for their babies.
What a great book.......2007-08-16
My daughter loves this book. Started reading it to her at about the age of one and she quickly started repeating the catchy phrases. She is now 20 months old and is able to mimic what I read verbatim and has such a good time. I highly recommend this book to any parent as it not only teaches catchy phrases but keeps a tempo going.
Great Book!.......2007-07-18
If you're looking for a book for Any age child, this is it! My little ones Love it and have been quoting it since they were 15 and 28 months old. They will break into "Bebop, Fisk Fisk" at the drop of a hat, quoting the whole book.
It's a great book to get them into reading as well as get their love of rhythm and music going.
I need to get some cd's of Charlie Parker now so we can listen to him as we quote the book.
Rhythm and blues for the toddler set.......2007-04-14
My son is 18 months old and it is truly one of his favourite books. He loves to have it read to him over and over again. You can't help but get into the rhythm of the words and make up the sound of be bop as you read. It becomes a song in itself to your child. I strongly recommend it to any parent who wants to introduce music to their children at a young age beyond the joys of "Wheels on the Bus."
My son's favorite book.......2007-01-19
This book has been a favorite of my son since we first read it to him as a six month old. Some how, we "lost" it in our house around Thanksgiving and after a couple of weeks of fruitless searching, I ordered another. J squealed with delight when it arrived and had me read it to him over and over. The sing-song rhythm and repetition of words captured my son's attention. It is like reading a jazz performance.

Book Description
In this companion book to the bestselling I Love My Hair, a young boy, Miles, makes his first trip to the barbershop with his father.Like most little boys, he is afraid of the sharp scissors, the buzzing razor, and the prospect of picking a new hairstyle. But with the support of his dad, the barber, and the other men in the barbershop, Miles bravely sits through his first haircut.Written in a reassuring tone with a jazzy beat and illustrated with graceful, realistic watercolors, this book captures an important rite of passage for boys and celebrates African-American identity.
Customer Reviews:
My son and I love this book!.......2005-12-01
Ms. Tarpley has written a beautiful ode to a father and son tradition - going to the barbershop. She captures the nuance of this treasured neighborhood gathering spot for men. My late father was a barber and I believe my fondness for barbershops stems from that. Thank you for a beautiful book. Mr. Lewis, thanks for the awesome illustrations!
A treasure to be shared with the family, present and future.......2004-12-11
My brother-in-law is a professional barber and he, like the fictional character in the book, has a three-year-old son. When I saw this one on the shelf, I was automatically drawn to its pages. Because I was familiar with the author and illustrator, having purchased several years ago their "I Love My Hair" for my then-three-year-old niece, I knew that this book had to be one of great quality.
I was not disappointed. Like its predecessor, the illustrations are lifelike and the simple story of the preparation and visit to the local barbershop for a boy's FIRST haircut is engaging and realistic.
This is a book that I'm sure that my nephew, and all little boys, can pass down to their progeny and future generations to come.
Like Father Like Son.......2003-02-16
Natasha Anastasia Tarpley introduces us to Miles as he gets ready for his first hair-cut. As most small children are, he's a bit nervous while at the same time excited as he takes this journey into the world of the "Big Boys." The scene of the barbershop shows that of encouragement and support for little Miles and depicts the relationship between father and son and the way men interact with one another.
With the use of watercolors, E. B. Lewis illustrates the characters in a way that brings them to life and complements the story perfectly. They are warm, colorful, and do an excellent job of conveying Tarpley's characters along with the different scenes portrayed in barbershops in the African American community. This story speaks volumes and I highly recommend it.

A book only a toddler could love.......1998-04-21
No, Barney & Baby Bop at the Beach is not great literature deftly composed by a renowned author. No, the illustrations are not superb works of art rendered by an inspired artist. An furthermore, in this book there is no depth of story line, development of character, nor spine tingling suspense. And, yes, this book deserves a ten exactly because it lacks all of the above. This is an unpretentious chunky, clunky board book based on the two outrageously purple and green popular television characters, Barney and Baby Bop. In the simplest of prose and the brightest of colors, they spend a delightful day at the beach doing just the ordinary, mundane things that any toddler delights in - playing with a sandpail, a beach ball and a dog, wearing sun glasses, building a sand castle, etc. And best of all, the book is tactiley interactive with cutaway sections of a squishy plastic beach ball, shiney sunglasses, furry dog, rough sand castle and more, for pudgy hands to explore! Summer's just around the corner. The annual family jaunt to the beach beckons as temperatures rise. Don't think twice about snapping this one up so your toddler can anticipate future fun by spending the day at the beach with Barney and Baby Bop.

best book ever.......2003-07-07
This is my favorite book ever. The deep, tense plot, and the intriguing and multi-dimensional characters kept me reading non-stop from start to finish. Barney is good for all ages, especially the over-50 crowd. For those of you tired by the mindless action and violence, this is for you. This is unlike the TV show Teletubbies.
Barney may be annoying but the books are great!.......2002-03-28
I am NOT a Barney fan (can any adults stomach that show?), my son is though so I got him some of the books. I love how positive they are and how they influence good behavior and don't reinforce any bad. It's worth putting up with Barney to end up with a well mannered kid!
bright life-like photos.......2002-03-16
A nice book for young children, encourages good behavior in resteraunts.
Excellent reference for kids.......2000-10-04
My daughter got this book when she turned three, about six months ago. Whenever we take her to a restaurant, about once a week and always to a very kid-friendly restaurant (I don't see the point in taking her to anything else!), we read through this book just before we go, and she now knows how to behave when she's ordering a meal etc. By the way, in case parents of younger kids were wondering --- before she was three she was impossible to take out for a meal. She'd kick and scream and generally make it known she wanted to get down!

My little girl LOVES this book!.......2001-12-14
She asks for this book to be read every night! It has great rhymes, and now she can almost recite every last word in each stanza -- and she's only 29 months old! It teaches manners, and is very colorful. The shape is great, too, with the handle just like a purse. It's hard to see, but front of the book has sparkle "jewels" attached to the front. The book is getting worn, but the jewels are still stuck on!
Sweet Book!.......2001-04-10
Nicely portable and not annoying to read a hundred times, my 2 1/2 year old daughter *loves* this book!

Barney and Booby Bop go to school.......2006-03-25
Barney doesn't. He just leaves Booby Bop there and spends his free time at the video arcade laughing at what evil plot he'll do next! Barney's a meanie...DON'T buy this book or you'll get brainwashed by the purple freak!
The World's Best-Loved Dinosaur Helps Kids Cope With School.......1998-04-23
The aging process takes us through countless milestones--not all of which are pleasant. Many of us have to think back 20, 30, 40, or more years to recall one of our most disturbing ones. At this stage a number of us felt trapped and helpless. Some became victims of insomnia or stomach disorders, and probably far more than are willing to admit it now considered packing our bags and making a late night get-away. Yet, somehow, we all survived our first day of school. For many little children, going to school is the first major trauma life offers. Seeing how enjoyable this seemingly terrifying ordeal is for Baby Bop should alleviate their unhappy confusion. This book describes the juvenile dinosaur's visit to a preschool where she partkes in one fun activity after another. Whether finger-painting, building a sandcastle, playing with blocks, or feeding the guinea pig, the story shows school as a non-threatening place to be. Through a series of bright color photographs, not illustrations, the tale presents schoolmates as friendly and the teacher as kind and supportive.
As further reinforcement, Barney is shown bringing Baby-Bop in the morning and picking her up in the afternoon. This cute narrative will make children feel secure at a very unnerving time in their young lives. Unfortunately, it came along three decades too late for me.
Over and over and over and over.......1998-04-22
I do believe I have read this book at least a million times. I have two children, ages 5 and 3, and they love the story. The pictures are beautiful and the content is relevant to this scary time in a child's life....school!
Perfect for kids that are a little scared of starting school.......1998-04-17
My son loves this book. It helped him learn about starting school and things that can occur during the school day. It also helped him getting over the fear of starting a school that he was unsure of. This is reading book that kids and parents can enjoy together.
Great for any kid who loves Barney.......1998-04-05
My two year old niece asks me to read this book every day. She loves Barney and since the pictures in the book are pictures and not illustrations, she enjoys it even more.

Barney and Baby Bop talk in stilted rhyme.......2000-01-10
Barney and Baby Bop go to the grocery store (which is actually a Tom Thumb location in Dallas) and talk about stuff to buy.
My only problem is that this is supposedly two friends chatting in the store, but their "conversation" is in a stilted, forced verse. Why the author felt it had to be rhyme like this, is beyond me. She should leave the poetry to Dr. Seuss and just let the two guys have fun in the store.
I'd choose another book in the "Go To" series if I were you.
Excellent for Preschoolers!.......1999-11-06
I'm a preschool teacher and we used this book before we left on our field trip to the grocery store. It was great! I highly recommend the series for preschoolers. Great photos and few words. Wonderful!
It's a great book!.......1997-04-23
My 3-year-old loved this book. It gives clues to certain foods that Barney needs to put in his cart, and your child, along with Baby Bop, can guess what those foods are. And they're all healthy foods, too! Great job to the authors
