A mother tiger wants her baby to go to sleep, but the little tiger resists. "'If I close my eyes,' he said, 'I can't see the sky.'" She assures him that he will not only see the sky when he sleeps, but will float among clouds and be cradled by the moon. Not in the least assured, the little tiger complains that if he closes his eyes, he will miss seeing the tree and the bird with blue feathers. With each concern, his mother consoles him with a comforting thought. If this gentle give-and-take were not calming enough for a bedtime story, Hallensleben's lovely dreamscapes (And If the Moon Could Talk) will surely do the trick. Double-page paintings of cloud animal shapes (with the little tiger cozying up with the moon), the "big mountains where the rain lives," and of mother tiger licking her baby are utterly hypnotic. Young children who are afraid to go to sleep will learn that "Dark is just the other side of light. It's what comes before dreams" and that mom is never very far away. (Ages 3 to 6) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
A little tiger takes an imaginative journey
The little tiger lay on his back in the tall grass.
"Close your eyes, little tiger," said his mother, "and go to sleep."
But the little tiger is worried about what sleep might bring.
His mother reassures him that once he closes his eyes, he will dream of magical places. And when he awakens, she will be right there, waiting for him.
Alternating between real-life scenes with the baby tiger and his mother and enchanted dream scenes of sleep's possibilities, Kate Banks's simple, comforting text and Georg Hallensleben's bright, colorful illustrations make this a charming bedtime story for small children.
A Junior Library Guild Selection
Customer Reviews:
Great Illustration.......2007-08-22
I first discovered this book at the library. I liked it so much that I've checked it out multiple times and have now purchased it.
Kate Banks' writing is a parent telling a story to a child. The words are soothing, but become more poetic with each reading.
Georg Hallenleben's art fills the page and takes you into the imagination of the writer.
I am a new mom and have received lots of books as gifts. I buy books used or on clearance as I see them. This is the first book I have purchased for my son at full price - I love it and would recommend as my top choice to anyone. I like it for naps.
Wonderful bedtime story...........2007-07-04
This book is one of my daughter's favorite bedtimes stories and mine. The little tiger is adorable and I love how all the illustrations complement the storyline. I absolutely LOVE this book and recommend it highly.
Purrfect for putting your little one(s) to sleep!.......2007-03-09
The beautiful illustrations and words of comfort help our two children, ages 2 and 4, at bedtime. The baby tiger expresses his fears of bedtime while mommy tiger provides words to calm and soothe.
Simply Wonderful.......2006-05-31
The writer and illustrator of "The Cat Who Walked Across France" team up again in another simple yet totally winning story. This time, our protagonist is a baby tiger--so innocent looking that he resembles a cuddly soft toy--who just can't go to sleep. With the enormous curiosity of any infant, this little tiger doesn't want to close his eyes and miss the sky, the trees, abright blue bird--all the wonderful, wondrous things around him.
In time-honored style, his wise mother counters all his objections with a parallel in his "mind's eye." In fact, she suggests that closing your eyes can bring you an even more varied and rewarding experience:
"The little tiger rolled onto his belly and listened to the leaves quiver overhead. 'If I close my eyes, I can't see the tree.' he said. 'But you can, said his mother. 'You can see many trees, where you can play hide-and-seek until the night finds you and brings you home."
This book was just made for quietly reading to your child as he or she gets into bed! ALong with the quieting possibilities offered in the book's beginning, Kate Banks also soothes the "what ifs." WHen the tiger imagines he's a bird, he suddenly acquires a fear of falling. The mother, who may have read some kids' books herself, answers "I will be there to catch you." IF he gets lost, "then I will find you." Banks knows no fear herself, she even tackles the dark: "'Don't be scared,' said his mother. 'Dark is just the other side of light. It's what comes before dreams.'" (Awwwww...) The sleepy tigers imagines what he might dream of, and illustrator Hallensleben shows us a panoramic view of snow-capped mountains shaded blue and purple, sand dunes with purple-topped palms, and a giant orange fish jumping out of a deep blue sea, a seagull, an orange-billed penguin-ish bird, and the tiger dancing merrily on its back.
Hallensleben draws his typically rich oil colors here, and brush strokes and saturated, unusual color schemes (there's a bit of the Fauve here) are almost too visually exciting for a bedtime book. Still, a darkened room will dampen the colors, and Banks' ever-present, always reassuring mother tiger will undoubtedly work as well with your young audience as it did with her tiger cub.
A wonderful book!.......2005-07-18
This is a beautiful book about going to bed and having wonderful dreams! The story is simple for toddlers to understand and the illustrations are impressive. It really shows young kids' imaginations and that "mama tiger" is always there for her baby.

Customer Reviews:
A good book to read.......2006-11-10
This book was entertaining, and had enough suspense to keep one involved and guessing. I have already ordered more of this authors books and have passed this one on to my married daughters who also found it a good read. They also want to read the other books when I get them.
My favorite suspense writer.......2006-09-19
I have read several books by Carlene Thompson and she is by far my favorite suspense writer. "Don't Close Your Eyes" is a very exciting book which kept me entertained and guessing up to the last page. This is one of the few suspense writers who does not insult the reader: you won't find the usual tortured grammar or characters straight out of a Harlequin Romance novel in Carlene Thompson's books. The main character, a 29-year-old veteranarian, is intelligent and talented without being cloyingly perfect, and while it is clear she and the new sheriff in her childhood hometown share a mutual attraction, she is not swooning helplessly in his arms. I did wonder how Jeff Lindstrom managed to wear both jeans and suit pants at the same time on page 309, but this is easily excused, given the high caliber of writing that prevails in all of Thompson's writing. I have ordered every book by this author. She is really great!
My First Book by Carlene Thompson.......2006-08-25
This was a wonderful book, grabbed me on the first page & I could not put it down. I am an avid fan of authors such as J.A. Jance, Patricia Cornwell, Kathy Reichs, Ann Rule and of course, Mary Higgins Clark. I'm so glad to find another new author to enjoy.
Carlene does it again! Don't miss this one!.......2006-08-04
I have never been disappointed with this author, she is sooo good. Want a novel to keep you in suspense the entire time and not have any "dull slow moments"---then you need a carlene thompson book at your side. This one keeps you guessing on who the killer is. Travel with the main character in the whole thought process of who is the killer. Don't miss this one! If your not sure if you like mystery or not give Carlene a try before you cast it aside.
First...But Not Last.......2005-10-28
This is the first Carlene Thompson book I read, and even though there were parts of the book that annoyed me, like most authors, I enjoyed this very much. Natalie is a good character, well developed, and right away Carlene makes you want to know what's going on, who's the killer, what the connection is. I would recommend Carlene Thompson to any Mystery Reader, or some one who likes to read a good novel. I would recommend this as the first Carlene novel to read.

Book Description
Happenstance…or God’s Great Plan?
She’s the bold, free-spirited type. She’s cute, she’s fun, and she’s following God. She’s Sierra Jensen, Christy Miller’s good friend, ready for her junior year of high school! All twelve books in the popular Sierra Jensen series come together in four volumes to reveal the ups and downs of Sierra’s incredible God-led journey!
Volume Two: Paul’s voice lives in her memory, but now it’s loud, clear, and right behind her in Close Your Eyes . With summer fast approaching, it is Without a Doubt bound to be Sierra’s best yet. In With This Ring, she can’t help but ponder the meaning of first kisses and lifetime commitments.
Close Your Eyes
Sierra Jensen has prayed and prayed for the unattainable Paul, but no answers have arrived yet. She hopes a visit with her classmates to a homeless shelter will take her mind off Paul, but guess what? He’s working there! Finally they talk, and before Sierra knows it, Paul agrees to come over for dinner. Their evening together is perfect—until Randy shows up on Sierra’s doorstep! Can things get any more confusing?
Without a Doubt
What could be more fun than a backpacking expedition? Sierra can’t wait to go, especially since things in her life have gotten so…complicated. Paul has moved to Scotland, and Randy is moving into Sierra’s heart. But just when things start to make sense, Sierra is asked out by Drake—the gorgeous guy her best friend, Amy, likes. How can Sierra even think about Drake when she knows doing so will hurt Amy and Randy? When a freak snowstorm hits, Sierra suddenly realizes what really matters most—but is it too late?
With This Ring
Sierra is on her way to Southern California for the very best reason of all: a wedding! Tracy and Doug’s long-awaited I dos are about to happen, and Sierra is eager to join Christy Miller and the rest of their friends. As soon as she arrives, Sierra discovers that everyone seems to be in love—except for her. That’s okay…she has what she needs—a gold purity ring from her dad and a vow of her own: to save herself for marriage. But when Sierra returns home, she wonders if her best friend, Amy, has settled for less than God’s best. Can Sierra convince her that purity is worth celebrating?
Story Behind the Book
“After writing the twelve-book Christy Miller series for teens, a new character showed up on the pages of the final novel. Her name was Sierra Jensen, and she was so compelling as a teenage character that readers began asking for a series about Sierra in order to hear more about her life choices. Our family had just moved to Portland at the time, and I found it easy to picture a sixteen-year-old like Sierra shopping at the local vintage clothing stores, hanging out with friends at a garage band concert, and serving at the homeless shelter on weekends.”
—Robin Jones Gunn
Customer Reviews:
A satisfying read!.......2006-07-07
This collection includes the first three books in the Sierra Jensen series written by Robin Jones Gunn.
Only You, Sierra introduces sixteen-year-old Sierra. Flying home from a mission trip in the UK, Sierra has met several new friends, including Katie and Christy, who readers of Robin's Christy Miller series will recognize. Normally outgoing and adventurous, Sierra is surprised to feel anxiety about her family's move to Portland, Oregon during the time she was away. A new home, new school, and potential new love interest challenge Sierra to reevaluate beliefs about herself that she has long taken for granted.
In Your Dreams finds Sierra watching over Granna Mae for a few days while her family is out of town. While it's difficult for Sierra to see her Granna's memory come and go, what seems to be a simple responsibility becomes more than Sierra bargains for when Granna Mae receives a call saying she needs immediate surgery. Meanwhile, Sierra tries to find a part-time job and wonders why, when she was the most popular girl at her old school, she is having such a difficult time making new friends in Portland.
Don't You Wish takes Sierra and her sister Tawni to spend Easter break at the beach with Christy, Katie, and their friends. When Tawni hits it off immediately with Jeremy, and even Katie pairs off with Antonio, an Italian exchange student, Sierra struggles with being jealous and feeling left out. She wants a boyfriend too. She tries to have fun and even learns to surf. But when Sierra witnesses Christy and Todd, to her the perfect couple, going through a difficult time in their relationship, she realizes everyone has struggles in their life. And she learns, as 1 Tim 6:6 states, that godliness with contentment is the greatest gain.
"Have you ever felt as if you were caught between two lives? The one you're living, and the one you wish you were living?" Sierra asks Christy.
Armchair Interviews says: Readers of all ages will understand Sierra's feelings and be ministered to by the timeless truths God reveals to her throughout this collection.

Customer Reviews:
A toddler must have!.......2001-10-01
This has been my 3-year-old's favorite bedtime (and morning time, and afternoon time...) book since he was 2. The soothing rhymes are so relaxing. Beautifully illustrated. We've had the copy from our church library for so long we decided we needed to invest in our own. If you like Goodnight Moon, you'll love Little Donkey. If you don't care for Goodnight Moon, you'll love Little Donkey. A wonderful investment!
Love it, love it, love it.......2001-07-16
The sweet illustrations are nice and the wonderful rythym of this story is absolutely the best. It has a rhyming text that is peaceful and tranquil and the most wonderful thing to read your little ones (and maybe big ones) to sleep with. We love it.
A must for the 'go to sleep' library!.......1999-11-30
I love reading this book to my niece (age 3) and nephew (age 1) at bedtime--it's on their 'most requested' list! The illustrations are very beautiful and peaceful and the overall themes of love and security are just what children (and adults) need in this wild world! The soft sounds in the text of the story are very dreamy and sleep inducing. Lovely!

Customer Reviews:
You Won't Want to Close Your Eyes After Reading This!.......2007-01-19
First off, I have to take back what I said about this being the last book in my review of book #7 of the series, clearly the Mostly Ghostly series is NOT wrapped up in Don't Close Your Eyes. Clearly Stine means to write more in this series, though I'm a bit worried because Don't Close Your Eyes came out in January 2006 and nothing more since (it's been a year now). We were also unable to find anything on the "official" website about upcoming releases. So I hope we haven't wasted our time on this series that might not come to a resolution for Max, Nicky and Tara.
So...now for the actual review...Don't Close Your Eyes is the 8th book in the Mostly Ghostly Series and is about on par with previous titles, though I do believe that this is the most involved and "dangerous" plot yet...one that the reader felt Max might now be able to get out of. In this book, Max encounters Inkweek, a terrifying spirit that winds up residing in Max and waiting for the opportunity to envelop him in his inky blackness and return to this world in bodily form. Once the initial possession takes place, Nicky and Tara find themselves working frantically to come up with ways to keep Max awake...and by the time it's been 3 days, Max is delirious with exhaustion and the plot becomes more and more outlandish (and horrific at the same time)....This one keeps you guessing right up to the hilarious end! Read and find out if Max is able to say awake! You won't be disappointed in this dangerously exhausting adventure...and Max even gets invited to a party with Tracy Wayne (prettiest girl at school), you'll just die when you find out what happens!
In the end, this book, like all the other before it is done in a campy horror style that has a few genuine thrills and chills...but mostly it's horror that's so over the top it's laughable and my 8 year old daughter just adores this series. As I've said in every previous review, I don't particularly (personally) care for Stine's over the top exaggeration of Max's abusive, bullying brother and uncaring father. I do think it's nice that Max is klutzy, nervous, always messing up and is smart at school but a flop with Tracy. In the end, I recognize that despite my annoyance at Max's family life, such things are often necessary in fiction and that this to distance Max from his family and make the idea of him being the ONLY one to know about or help with all the hilarious, creepy, horrific and strange stuff going on in his life because of Phears, Nicky, Tara and their parents. Here's hoping there will be more in the series, my daughter just loves these!
Is this the last Mostly Ghostly book?.......2007-01-14
Until this past summer, my son would only read non-fiction (books of facts were his favorite). He absolutely refused to read fiction. Once I persuaded him to read "Who Let the Ghosts Out?", he was hooked. He couldn't wait to read the next book.
We looked at the RL Stine and Mostly Ghostly websites and he got psyched about what would happen in the upcoming books. This one ("Don't Close Your Eyes") wasn't listed on any of his sites, so we didn't know it existed until I stumbled across it at one book store. Then I saw it here.
Unlike the others, it does not list an excerpt from the next book, and the story isn't wrapped up like you would expect from a final book, so I am not sure if he is planning to write more or not. He seemed to be doing at least 2 per year, but nothing in the past year. This one seemed like he was pushed to write something but he ran out of ideas.
It's a fun series for kids (not scary), and we wish Mr Stine would write more, or at least write a final book to wrap up the series.

Not her best but still good........2003-11-26
This is my least favoite of Betsy Brannon Greens books but it was still a good book. The mystery was a bit confusing and the love story wasn't strong enough for me, but if you like a good book then read this one. Here is a condensed version of what the book is about. Helen Tyler comes into town on the night of a murder, she is running from her past. She starts working for the sherrif, Matt Clevenger, and finds herself helping to solve the murders. The ending was very surprising but a little confusing at times.
a great book!.......2003-08-03
I have enjoyed all of Betsy Brannon Green's books, and although this one is my least favorite, it is still a wonderful book. A serial killer is on the loose in a small southern town called Eureka, Georgia and the only clue they leave is a small white Bible beside each of the victim's beds. Helen Tyler comes into town and soon begins working for the sherrif, Matt Clevenger, and finds herself also involved with this confusing mystery. Together they work to uncover the identity of a killer and come closer and closer to the answers. The book had a very surprising ending and left me turning the pages for hours at a time. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy romantic mysteries. It is a great book!

One Of My Favorites.......2002-09-07
My aunt bought me this book for Christmas when I was about three or four, back in the late 70's when it was new. I loved it. It was my favorite book. My mom used to read it to me over and over again. I still have it, even though saddly the original cover is no longer with it. And I will never get rid of it. To this day I still every once in a while pull it off the shelf and read it, remembering those nights long ago when my mom was reading it to me. This is a great book, and if you can find a copy of it somewhere, I would highly recomend picking it up.
A book I loved to death.......2000-11-29
This was my favorite book when I was little. My father read it to me over and over again until I had it memorized! The repetition is wonderful for young readers; even if your children can't read, Jeffers' illustrations are enough to make anyone a little sleepier. I still dream of ending up in the treehouse at the end of the book. It's a pity Close Your Eyes is no longer in print.
My All-Time Favorite Bedtime Book.......2000-02-29
Over the years of reading books to my children, Close Your Eyes became both my favorite and my daughter's. The lyrical story is told on two levels, perfectly complimented by the illustrations. As a father, I identify with the dad in the story. My daughter is in college now, but we occasionally recite the story to eachother in our correspondence, and still treasure the countless bedtimes that we read this book together. It is, indeed, the perfect gift for new parents.
Great words and pictures for toddlers.......1999-12-14
My son loves this book and it's a great way to prepare him for bed. Its words are simple and easy to remember. He's already memorized parts of the book (as have we). And the pictures are great. Colorful and full of recognizable objects and animals. My son actually anticipates each page. I'd recommend this book to anyone who uses reading stories as part of the bedtime ritual.
This is my children's favorite bedtime story........1998-05-23
The lyrical poem and duel illustrations make this book a treasure. Susan Jeffers' illustrations of a father and his child's bedtime struggle add a whimsical touch. We have read this book so many times both my girls can recite it word for word. My eighteen year old daughter is threatening to steal the book when she leaves for college in the fall. I am browsing for additional copies in case she follows through on it.

This RULES.......2001-08-08
arent you sick of lame dream books that dont make any sense? this one is perfect for the rest of us. everything's explained easily and completely. tucker says our dreams have nothing to do with "symbols"...they're about us, and whats going on in our brains. you GOTTA read this it makes everything make sense.
An okay book for the most part..........2001-05-23
Have you ever wondered about the history of dreams? What something meant in your dream? Or maybe even wondered about the weird dreams other people have had? This book includes all of this and some more...
I have read some books on dreams, but never really been able to get such an insight on them. It tells you everything about dreams and even special things to help you remember them. I thought my dreams were weird! Wait until you read some of the ones that are in this book! After buying this book I immediately started to read it and couldn't put it down. This book gave me a lot of knowledge such as "How come I had the same dream as my friend last night?" and about sleepwalking bizarre dreams, etc. Though I think they could have included a little more in it. I felt that somethings were missing.
I reccomend this book for anyone who wants to really get inside their dreams!
The Critics Speak...........2001-04-10
From VOYA This highly accessible and easy-to-read guide to dreams and their interpretation for young adults is arranged into three sections that are equally stimulating and informative. Some of the intriguing topics in part one include nightmares, prophetic dreams, freaky dreams, dying in your dreams, famous dreamers, sleepwalking, and sex and dreams. Part two offers a sometimes humorous analysis of nineteen different "weird dreams," such as "The One Where the Mushroom Grows Out of My Face," "The One Where I Kiss My Boyfriend, Then Get Hit by a Truck," "The One Where My Parents Throw Me Off a Cliff," and the ever-popular, "The One Where All My Teeth Fall Out." The book concludes with a do-it-yourself section for those interested in starting a dream journal, learning how to lucid dream, and developing an inner eye for self-analysis. Although teeming with fun facts, fascinating statistics, and relevant quotes, the appealing page layouts are not overfilled with cartoons and sidebars. Especially appealing is how Shaw made convenient use of his own dreams and personal experiences regarding the issues presented, infusing an otherwise flat study with a rather jovial and inviting voice. This technique not only helps give examples of the various concepts he introduces but also provides the necessary variety to the instructional narrative. With its wide appeal, this above-average and scintillating book is a recommended purchase for all public and school libraries. easy to follow.......2000-08-31
i really enjoyed this book. i've read lots of dream books that are kind of hard to follow. this one's easy to read, funny, and insightful. it answered all the questions i had about symbolism etc. i definitley recommend it.
Dreamy.......2000-08-29
I've never really been a big dream freak until I had this one dream about playing tennis against both Williams sisters at the same time...and winning! I learned a lot from this book--and for $6, that's cool with me.

Kelter's "Don't Close Your Eyes" was a fun and easy read with a great ending.
Don't Close Your Eyes.......2005-08-06
This wonderful book kept me interested from page one! Its the kind of book that keeps you wanting more. There is murder, humor, love & suspense all rolled up into one. The ending has a wonderful twist to it! There are no "dull" parts which made it hard to put down once I started reading it. Lawrence Kelter is a new author, Im looking forward to reading more of his future books.
