Critics have compared Richard Morgan's first novel, Altered Carbon, to the classic hardboiled fiction of Raymond Chandler. The comparison doesn't accurately describe Morgan's second novel, Broken Angels. Morgan's prose never approaches Chandler's metaphoric excess, and Morgan's antihero, Takeshi Kovacs, doesn't wisecrack nearly as often as Chandler's hero, Philip Marlowe. Also, Kovacs's far-future universe is considerably darker than Marlowe's noir world. In Kovacs's universe, high-tech implants called "stacks" record memory and personality; this means soldiers can be sent to their deaths, have their stacks implanted in new bodies, and be sent to their deaths again, and again, and again. Generals needn't quibble about wasting lives in massacres or nuclear explosions. The slaughtered soldiers will soon be back in action--unless their stacks aren't recovered. Then their consciousness will go mad, isolated in an indestructible, inescapable virtual reality. The proper term for the Takeshi Kovacs novels isn't "hardboiled." It's "brutal."

The Martians disappeared long ago, but they left behind their star gates, which have allowed humanity to spread across the galaxy--and bring warfare to the stars. As Broken Angels opens, Takeshi Kovacs is a lieutenant in humankind's most feared mercenary company, but rumors of an astonishing archaelogical discovery inspire his desertion. Humans have never found a Martian starship until, perhaps, now. If the rumors are true, and the ruthless Kovacs can take possession of the unprecedented relic, he will make his fortune. But if he fails in his quest, he may find himself imprisoned in high-tech hell for eternity. --Cynthia Ward

Book Description

Welcome back to the brash, brutal new world of the twenty-fifth century: where global politics isn’t just for planet Earth anymore; and where death is just a break in the action, thanks to the techno-miracle that can preserve human consciousness and download it into one new body after another.

Cynical, quick-on-the-trigger Takeshi Kovacs, the ex-U.N. envoy turned private eye, has changed careers, and bodies, once more . . . trading sleuthing for soldiering as a warrior-for-hire, and helping a far-flung planet’s government put down a bloody revolution.

But when it comes to taking sides, the only one Kovacs is ever really on is his own. So when a rogue pilot and a sleazy corporate fat cat offer him a lucrative role in a treacherous treasure hunt, he’s only too happy to go AWOL with a band of resurrected soldiers of fortune. All that stands between them and the ancient alien spacecraft they mean to salvage are a massacred city bathed in deadly radiation, unleashed nanotechnolgy with a million ways to kill, and whatever surprises the highly advanced Martian race may have in store. But armed with his genetically engineered instincts, and his trusty twin Kalashnikovs, Takeshi is ready to take on anything—and let the devil take whoever’s left behind.

Gideon's Fall: When You Dont Have a Prayer, Only a Miracle Will Do The second book in the Kovacs saga it is my favorite and arguably the best. The sleeve concept is explored to the fullest as well as the military bio tech. The story is lean and fast moving with tight dialogue and crisp story lines. Where Altered carbon left me wanting more and Woken furies tied up loose ends. Broken Angels seemed during the reading, limitless..... think of that

In the second Takeshi Kovacs novel, we have some cover military fun and games and mayhem, especially of the one man variety.

Add in some drugs that are really, really useful for infiltration, and some rather nasty class conflict to spice things up.

Another excellent book, even though a different setting.

The first copy of this book arrived damaged, but thanks to Amazon's incredible staff my husband had his replacement before he got the damaged one in the nail to return it. Thanks!

Oh, about the book--he loved it, recommends it highly along with everything else by Morgan "even he is a bloody Scot."

4 out of 5 stars As long as the stack's intact.......2007-04-17

"Broken Angels" continues the story of ex-envoy Takeshi Kovacs. The opening finds this lieutenant gravely wounded in a war being waged between Carrera's Wedge, with whom Kovacs has thrown in his lot and the revolutionist forces of Joshua Kemp.

Of course, a cartel of corporations is all too happy to sit back and use the war for advancing their profits and power. As bad as the combatants are, the corporate brass are more reviled in this dark, bleak future.

The premises Richard Morgan has set up in "Altered Carbon" inform and shape the reality of this sequel. The basic construct is that human consciousness can, in essence, be decanted into a "stack," a mobile memory core (think the ultimate "thumb" drive but substitute "mind"), making it possible to survive all manner of death and dismemberment as long as the stack's intact.

This hellish vision of reincarnation forms the backdrop for an expedition to reach an intact, functioning Martian spaceship. Kovacs is eager to join the fun and once corporate sponsorship is secured, assembles a hand-picked team for the mission.

The fun revolves around a navigating web of double-crossing, dealing with killer technologies, trying to survive radiation poisoning long enough to complete the mission and the be "resleeved" into a new body, and coping with the residual supernatural presence from mass death of the Martians.

Mr. Morgan uses a high octane prose, heaped with ample violence, political debate, corporate double talk, graphic depictions of stomach-churning violence and blood drenched wounds. Not ever thread resolves as expected, and the twists and turns require focus on detail and rereading crucial passages to keep from being lost.

Book Description

Charles Graybar had all of the trappings of a financially successful existence; literally, living the American dream. As he reached his late 30's he was stunned by the realization that his life felt incredibly empty and seemingly without purpose. While experimenting with a self-designed combination of meditation techniques that he used to escape the stresses of corporate life, he stumbled upon a perceptional gateway of sorts in 1993. Through this gateway Graybar learns that communication with three advanced souls is possible. Beyond the Broken Gate is a chronicle of Graybar's search to find meaning in his discovery and the very purpose of life.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2006-09-06

Religion and spiritual enlightnement are extremely personal. We each seek answers to the same questions; we differ in what answers we accept. Charles Graybar has some incredible insights that many of us can relate to, that we can incorporate into our own personal system of beliefs. His path to spirituality and understanding was an intersting one. He had everything that most Americans believe they want: wealth and material trappings. He also had power and prestige. When he found his answers, he abandoned the lifestyle that was inconsistant with his spirituality. A braver, more honest man you'll never find. His spiritual journey is shared in this easy to read, easy to understand book. He shares his insights and his discoveries with his readers with candor, honesty and generosity. No matter where you are in your own spiritual journey, no matter what your religious beliefs are, you can incorporate Mr. Grabar's messages into your life.

2 out of 5 stars We Have to Give Him Credit for Trying.......2005-11-30

This a painful read. I am not referring to the subject matter. It is Charles Graybar's (Chuck to his Spirit Guides)(the use of this nickname seems to take him by surprise more than once) laborious monolog. Very nearly every single sentence begins with using the given name of each member of the seemingly spontaneous group. "Chuck" Kalista frowned, "You must pay attention now, as this is very important" and "Kalista" came the answer, "I hear you and will listen" and "Ok, then, Chuck", she said. "Here it is in a nutshell." And, again, "Yes Kalista" "I am waiting breathlessly for the explanation." I am not kidding here. I mean he does this with probably 90% of the book. He is almost child-like in his enthusiasm for his newly awakened self, describing every little new idea and then the whole thought process while his guides look on with a "fond, but tolerant smile". I may be really sticking my neck out here, because basically you can't help but like the guy, and appreciate his honesty, but I think he found a long forgotten bag of something tucked under and taped to, the flap of his old college gym bag. His descriptions of reserving his week-ends from early Friday evening to late Sunday, just to be alone and meditate, then the mind-boggling over the top "beyond human description" trips in "Kalista's garden" were just... sad. I ended up actually feeling something very nearly like love for this guy. He apparently had had a horribly abusive childhood (his words)yet came out a winner for breaking the cycle. He deserves applause for that. But it gets pretty darn old rather quickly to go through his agonizingly over simplified concepts such as "the God-Source is in everything" and "the God-Source is everything". Ok, Chuck, we get it. Problem is, we got it already and there is nothing new or different about this book that I can enthusiastically pass on to another reader.

3 out of 5 stars Not too sure.......2005-08-13

THe book was pretty far fetched but I did try to keep an open mind. I really hope that his experience was real and he isn't a phoney.
I guess experiencing it for ONESELF would be the ONLY way to truely believe.
The book did get my attention and it WAS a good read.

Review

"Beyond the Broken Gate - An Ordinary Man's Extraordinary Journey In Learning Who We Are, Why We Live, And Where We're Going" by Charles Graybar is a Spiritual book. The author had questions which trouble many seekers, viz., what is the purpose of life, where are we going spiritually etc., and got answers from advanced spirit guides. In about 360 pages, Charles or Chuck as he is referred to in the book, shares with us his extraordinary journey into some advanced spiritual realms and the answers that he got. Obviously his spiritual encounters have affected his career and personal life very extensively, so that his prsent life is in better tune with the original purpose.

To many westerners, the ideas presented in the book may be new and may thus challenge their beliefs. To eastern believers, much of what Chuck describes is already known. The Upanishads, The Bhagavad Gita and of course Buddhist teachings (which Chuck is aware of slightly), present similar teachings. However, his attempt at explaining esoteric concepts is laudable and will appeal better to he 'rational' minds. Chauck comes through as an extraordinary man. In fact, since each individual is unique, no one is really ordinary.

There is an interesting perceptional block in Chuck's understanding. While agreeing that the life on earth plane is similar to a dream and thus all events that take place here, good or bad have no real significance in the higher planes, except for their value as educational lessons, Chuck is still distressed about the negative atmosphere prevailing on earth in his life time. Chuck seems to have missed one important spiritual lesson that life has several cycles and the world too goes through several cycles of war and peace. A great war always cleans up the atmosphere and love, peace etc. start
growing. But again as the decay keeps piling up, as the negativity keeps building, another war or earthquake, a flood or some other natural disaster comes up. In Hindu philosophy the Trinity of Creator, Preserver and Destroyer are three different aspects of the same Source. Much before the Crusades and the World Wars, two major wars were described in detail in Ramayana and Mahabharatha. But since Chuck's lessons to be learnt include compassion, empathy etc., his feelings are as per the programmed script.

The book has a fair number of editorial glitches, but thankfully the message comes through quite well. The book is strongly recommended to all spiritual seekers.

5 out of 5 stars One guys opinion of the violence in this book........2005-03-12

Broken Angels is the story of a combat zone. If you think that the carnage described with in it is some type of ridiculous distortion (as some reviewers seem to think) of real life in war, then you may need to read up on your military non-fiction. Try Dispatches, by Herr or for something closer to our current era check out Black Hawk Down, by Bowden. These are not Sci-Fi but display a lack of humanity in war that rivals anything in Broken Angels.

Do not make the mistake of thinking Broken Angels is glamorizing war. It merely shows it for what it is and always will be- young and old, men and women, solders and civilians dying for no other reason than the whims of the ruling class, for profit and power.

Finally, for any reviewer opining on how Morgans writing is so violent and sexual; let me remind you that shows like 24 and Desperate Housewives are not about math and baking cookies. Whether you realize it or not, sex and violence are just as popular in the Blue states as in the Red. What I'm getting at is, at least in Broken Angels the writing is somewhat erudite with some form of intelligent dialogue on the nature of war, and the violence illustrated in the book makes you sick and angry (as it should). The stuff on television has no such qualms. Its only purpose is to get you to tune in next week.

    Tia can do this.

She should say good-bye to Angel, the love of her life.

She should say, "See ya later! Have fun at college. Don't forget me!"

But it would be so much easier to say, "Stay."

And maybe he would. Maybe he'd give up everything for her....

But is that what she really wants?

Angel loses the money at the track by betting on horses, and his father fires him from Desmond's Auto. He doesn't know if he wants to go to Stanford University or not. He works at the Riot[a club where El Carro kids hang out, since Miller's Point,The Dairi Burger,Beach Disco, ect] most of the Sweet Valley High school kids hangouts have been destroyed in the earthquake. Melissa comes home from the hospital after attempting suicide.

i think that this book wasn't really my type of book .. although it was interesting and many ironic turns here and there .. i think that the problems they talk about in this book will be problems i will face when i'm older .. for example .. dating issues .. i think i'll use this book has a real resource when i'm in high school or something. but this book is really interesting and unique in many ways .. and i would recommend it to someone in a older grade like students that are in their highschool years.

5 out of 5 stars Book #10 in SVH Senior Year Series.......2002-09-20

After losing his college savings at the tracks, Angel Desmond is startled with yet another blow in "Broken Angel" when his father fires him from the family's car shop after finding out about Angel's financial mishap. (What is wrong with that guy's father?) Now Angel isn't even sure he can go to Stanford, no matter how hard he works at his other job at the Riot.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Aames breaks up with Jessica Wakefield, thinking it best for them to spend some time apart, especially after he caught Jess on what looked like a date with Will Simmons in the previous book, "The One That Got Away". It's now left up to Jessica to figure out who she wants to be with--Jeremy or Will. And it doesn't look like it'll be an easy decision for her either, especially after reading her "Jeremy vs. Will" comparison list on page 60 and 61--and especially after what happens in the last few pages of this book during the cheerleader-football team "kidnapping".

And speaking of writing samples, there are two humorous bits in "Broken Angel": 1) on page 122, the morning announcement Maria Slater has to read to the school about showing school spirit the "responsible and mature" way, and 2) on page 133-6, Andy Marsden's slacker essay for the Oracle on school spirit. There are additional notes and journal entries (which is standard in every SVH Senior Year book), including some e-mails passed between Maria and Ken, who, surprisingly, have not yet gotten together, if they ever will. But at least Ken's still determined to get back on the football team, the one thing (besides the memory of his dead girlfriend) that brings him a great deal of happiness.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, FUnny, Realistic, Romantic!.......2001-07-30

This book is reall great! The whole Angel thing is so realistic, and the way he's pressured with the money situation is so well- written it makes you wonder what you'd do in his shoes. Tia is also worried that she's become part of the problem. Jessica loves both Will and Jeremy. Even though Will ruined her life, she still has a thing for him. I am a fan of both Will and Jeremy, but I cracked up when I read the part where Jeremy wrote a letter to, you know, and ended it off with "If you need someone else to pick on, there's this guy Will Simmons...", I fell over laughing! I love both Jeremy and Will, but it was mad funny! Anyway, this book is great! Jess falls for Will, but is nervous to admit it cause she's afraid she's betrayign Jeremy. Liz is all depressed about Conner. COnner is having problems with his mother, who's suddenly acting strange. The whole Will/Jessica/Jeremy love triangle is well written. The Angel situation with his money and Tia is well written. ALso, the funny thing Jeremy wrote is well written. This book is great!

5 out of 5 stars Best book keep on reading.......1999-12-06

this was a really great senior year. I think that is was worth every penny. It is about Tia and Angel and how he lost all his money, at the race track and about his decision to stay or to go away to college. It makes you never want to stop reading it and it is very suspensful with Jessica and Jermey and all there problems going on. it is very good and i recomend it a lot.

Fujiwara Sunao is a rather unusual young lady. Not only does she prefer to wear her hair short and dress like a boy, but she also possesses the power to control water! One might think Fujiwara would be an odd fit at her school, but strangely, she's not. Between the destructive and demented school president, the kooky and somewhat stalker-like school nurse, and the obsessed underclassman who wants to be her apprentice, Fujiwara may be the sanest person at the school--which is a big help considering she may be asked to save it!

    5 out of 5 stars Well . . . I like it.......2007-03-30

I'm a bit surprised by the low rating!

To start off the story is a bit convoluted, but it is designed to be this way. This is the first vol in a 5 vol series and it is supposed to begin in the middle of things. It can best be described as a Greek play where the story usually begin in "the middle". (There a latin that goes something like in medias reas but it isn't spelled right.) The rest of the vols work to unveil the character's past. In other words this isn't your typical manga where all of the facts are easily discovered. If you are a Decendants of Darkness fan, it is like trying to discover Tsuzuki's past. The end result forces you to read the vol several times before truly understanding what took place - this is the only problem with the work.

The story does take place, mostly, at a school, but that isn't what is important. The school serves as merely a meeting grounds for most of the characters. Yes some of the characters so seem to mimic characters that have been in other works. However, as the vols go on the similarities vanish. Also there is high use of gender-bender type characters and jokes. To summarize, the doctor is male but dresses like a girl and the main character is a girl but dresses like a guy. Plus there are plenty of yuri jokes scatter about.

Lastly the art is beautiful! It is on par with Decendants of Darkness and Angel Sanctuary. There is mild use of chilbi drawings but not to the point of Sunako in Wallflower. Each panel is beautifully filled with artwork. There is little use of blank or blacked out manga panels.

Overall, I really enjoyed this work and cannot wait for the release of the fifth and final vol. This work may be a more difficult read than other mangas but well worth it.

1 out of 5 stars Please Find a Better Manga to Buy.......2006-12-29

I saw this in the bookstore and with it's eyecatching art and interesting summary on the back decided to buy it and see what it was all about. I was extremely disappointed.

The story is so shaky it's extrememly difficult to understand what's going on. Characters are thrown into the plotline with little introduction or personality.

Personally I felt it was like the author wanted to establish that the main character is female, but wants to look male, and controls water. These facts were thrown at the reader repeatedly to the point of being dull and annoying. Not to mention that the supporting cast was introduced in a few pages, then treated as if they had been long since established.

All in all, I will not be picking up anymore of these mangas, and I might even try to return the volume I did purchase. If you want a manga with pretty artwork and only pretty artwork, then feel free to pick this up. But if you'd like some decent story to go along with it, steer clear my friends.

2 out of 5 stars decent art, not so decent story.......2006-06-27

The art for this is rather nice, though a little off at some times, and the chibi-blank Fujiwara is kinda creepy.

All in all, the author does a decent job of establishing a "world" - the characters enjoyably interact with each other although they are admittedly a bit of cliche character types - I'm thinking of a combo of Alec (Ceres) and Watari (Yami no Matsuei) for the doctor, and Kiri (Beauty Pop) and some others for Fujiwara.

The main problem with this book is that from page one you feel as if you are thrown into an already existing world without any initiation - as if this was a spinoff from some other series (Brand-New Angels?) Not only does the manga-ka seem to assume we know as much about her world as she, but she then follows up with a shaky storyline.

The bottom line is, if you want to buy this book, read at least a chapter or two first to make sure.

2 out of 5 stars Save your manga-bucks - pass on this one.......2006-03-01

It has some nicely drawn characters and decent background art. The character's themselves aren't too bad either. There are some nice quirky moments of humor but they are separated by lots of who-cares storyline. As a matter of fact I've seen cereal boxes with more plot than this manga. It might pick up in vol. #2 but I'm not holding my breath. It's as if the creator sat down and decided to write a little gender-bender school story, but then decided they'd like it to have a supernatural twist so the main character is given the power to control water. Not bad so far, but then the creator struggles mightily to come up with storylines that could include this power at a high school. It's really sorry stuff so far. I would like to see this creator paired up with a real writer and save his/her focus on the sequential artwork, which is where this creator excels.

5 out of 5 stars interview with an angel.......2006-10-11

It wasn't hard to figure out where Hilary came from -- you could tell that she was going somewhere else -- but you can never really know where she's going. But you have a sense that wherever she's going, we can't go, because you have to have wings because it's up in the sky. I liked the characters. I liked that Hilary could only read picture writing. And I liked that she took James and Amanda flying. (Anna, age 8)
