Book Description

Winning by not competing: a fresh approach to strategy Since the dawn of the industrial age, companies have engaged in head-to-head competition in search of sustained, profitable growth. They have fought for competitive advantage, battled over market share, and struggled for differentiation. Yet these hallmarks of competitive strategy are not the way to create profitable growth in the future. In a book that challenges everything you thought you knew about the requirements for strategic success, W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne argue that cutthroat competition results in nothing but a bloody red ocean of rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool. Based on a study of 150 strategic moves spanning more than a hundred years and thirty industries, the authors argue that lasting success comes not from battling competitors, but from creating “blue oceans”: untapped new market spaces ripe for growth. Such strategic moves—which the authors call “value innovation”—create powerful leaps in value that often render rivals obsolete for more than a decade. Blue Ocean Strategy presents a systematic approach to making the competition irrelevant and outlines principles and tools any company can use to create and capture blue oceans. A landmark work that upends traditional thinking about strategy, this book charts a bold new path to winning the future.

5 out of 5 stars Question the status quo.......2007-09-25

The book forced me to rethink the way I normally would look at business developments for my companies: either value based or feature based. The idea of a creating new space in a crowded market and making a leap in growth through the blue ocean strategy stirred up my thinking juices. Personally, I don't like how to books with "three simple steps" This book was great; a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-09-24

1. This is NOT a marketing book
2. There is no such thing as a fail safe strategy
3. This is a tool and is only as good as the user
4. Applicable in different situations
5. Good companion to Competitive Strategy written in the 80's by Mike Porter which is THE industry book
6. The book is NOT a pioneer and is NOT proported to be. It is a study in those companies who seemed to have created new markets such as Cirque De Soleil. The authors did NOT set out to create a new "theory" and then retroactively "fit" companies but rather study an emerging pheonom. and try to locate patterns.

I think that pretty much covers all the gripes of the previous entries. I first came across this book in a competitive strategy class in a business organizational change degree. It is an excellent text and gives another viewpoint to the old study of competitive strategy. I have used the strategy canvas tool located in chapter two AS A TOOL to assist me in both departmental and industry situations to locate existing patterns of competition.

Worth the money.
But then, I am just a "mere" academic (albeit with many years of industry experience) so if you truly do not like the book I suggest returning it. :)

5 out of 5 stars What is your greatest challenge?.......2007-09-13

The greatest struggle for most business people is to come up with a truly original and valuable idea. Close behind that is how to get employees to work together. This book makes me want to cry, because it actually, simply, lays out how to do both. Beautiful.

3 out of 5 stars Academics rarely demonstrate how to do it!.......2007-09-11

I bought this book. Their identifications are valid enough. Great companies have always created uncontested market space while making their competitors irrelevant. This is not in dispute. However...

The authors Chan Kim & Renee Mauborgne are just mere academics. And what is annoying is that they haven't battle tested their Blue Ocean model from hard knocks in the trenches business wars to find out what works and what doesn't for themselves! Again, this is what I find annoying with academics. They say a lot but never prove it themselves! Remember Merton & Scholes and LTCM?

For an example...in the book, the authors have an interesting strategic canvass graph approach that supposes to prove how Blue Ocean events come about. That's fine, but how do you prove it? Moreover, the 'values' are different for each company, so there is nothing consistent to glean from this.

What I'd like to have seen is a Dash Board type matrix template that allows any company or budding entrepreneur to carry out Blue Ocean due diligence on any industry or market niches...proofing these Blue Ocean catchments from a zero learning curve application! The book does have important points but lacks the cutting edge tools to unify Blue Ocean diligence and proofs for any company!

Thus, what this book lacks is a more honed processing of enquiry from the authors. And I suspect this to be the case because like many academics they haven't proven the unifying dynamics that goes into capturing Blue Ocean strategies for themselves with businesses they have built through their own mindset!

Again, this book is a case of 'do what I say, because I don't have to prove what I say'.

There are great industry shapers out there who can shift and move whole industries and markets in their favour...but the authors of this book are not one of them.

However, there are great positives the authors have identified. The book contains a very interesting 'Strategic Grid' technique. From this simple grid technique any one can mentally survey how to change one's industry or market from a macro-vantage point. But shifting and moving your new found Blue Ocean grid at a tactical level to rule your competition making them irrelevant is another matter entirely. The chapters that explain this grid are worth the book, but don't expect any thing else.

What you really want is a knowledge base that allows you to dig out Blue Ocean criteria from a template of enquiring tools STACKED PROCESS BY PROCESS UNTIL YOU PROOF YOUR OWN BLUE OCEAN POWER. This book fails on this!

I would suggest that any one buying this book should read 'Blue Print to a Billion by David Thomson to understand how real Blue Ocean executions are carried out correctly. In addition, Chet Holmes' Ultimate Sales Machine' gets you to understand how to carry out big frame strategies at the tactical level.

Both these books will plug the holes lacking with Kim & Mauborgne's work.

I like the non text book clear presentation. You do not have to have an MBA to enjoy and learn from this book.

Book Description

Reviving Ophelia meets The Mother- Daughter Book Club in a book that offers a proven model for staying connected through adolescence

There is no comment more troubling to the mother of a young girl than “she loves you now, but just wait 'til she's a teenager.” Ten years ago, SuEllen Hamkins and Renee Schultz, psychotherapy professionals with a combined forty years' experience and both mothers of then seven-year-old daughters, created The Mother-Daughter Project with several other women in their community, with the hope of disproving this damaging assumption. With their young daughters, the group met regularly to speak frankly about such issues as girls' friendships (and aggression), puberty, the media's influence on their self-image and esteem, drugs, and sexuality.

As their daughters matured, the mothers marveled at the strength and confidence with which the girls thrived through adolescence. The Project had succeeded in creating a haven from the many perils of teen culture. Equally important, it helped the mothers navigate their own fears and concerns about adolescence with integrity and grace.

At once simple and revolutionary, this book details the success of the Mother-Daughter Project's groundbreaking model, providing the reader with a road map for strengthening her bond with her own daughter, and providing strategies for staying close through adolescence and beyond.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Useful and Beautiful.......2007-10-09

The Mother-Daughter Project is a most practical, theoretical, and hopeful guide to dealing with our predator culture -- a culture that expects and even thrives upon mothers and daughters becoming separate during the daughter's adolescence. My mother-daughter group, just begun with help from the book contains 11 & 12 year old girls and their mothers and is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic group who have various economic backgrounds. We did one of the exercises ("our perfect day") from the book and it elevated us to a surprising new level, created an introduction to community within the group and highlighted some marvelous differences and similarities between the generations. My own 11-year-old daughter said, "I noticed that everyone in our group had something going for mangoes AND liked climbing...also that we all wanted to get up really early so that we could really live large during the day!"

This is an incredible book for anyone interested in women, girls, psychology, spirituality and community. The extremely readable information about our culture's approach to girls and women and the valuable stories about the mother-daughter pairs in the authors' M-D Project make "The Mother-Daughter Project: How Mother and Daughters Can Band Together, Beat the Odds, and Thrive Through Adolescence" truly a book to read, re-read and USE.

3 out of 5 stars good for rich white people.......2007-09-13

Three years ago, you could not have convinced me that my mother and I would have a functional adult relationship. In addition to a life crisis that brought us back onto speaking terms and into each other's lives, we learned to set aside most of our differences because life is too short to do otherwise. When I heard about The Mother-Daughter Project, a book that promises "a proven model for staying connected through adolescence and beyond," I felt a glimmer of hope that young women would no longer spend their twenties overcoming the verbal scars of youthful wars with our parents. Maybe my expectations were quite high, but this overly self-referential, self-help book in disguise is written in such a fluffy, insulting way that I found it hard to accept any of its legitimate advice.

It should first be noted that the ten-year group experiment on which this book is based took place in greater Massachusetts, where I currently reside. While that doesn't immediately lend itself to a myriad of privileges, two educated, white women wrote this book from their own experience. They do make a cursory acknowledgement that mothering is more than their version of the status quo, but this recognition simply doesn't show through in their analysis or supposedly practical application, and I just can't get down with that kind of written tokenism.

Most helpful for their references to other similar, more groundbreaking works, this is a good book for mothers who literally have no clue about how to start relating to their teenagers. The overly simplistic solutions and embarrassing language do not make it an effective read for teens, however. If my mother had handed me this when I was in middle school, I'd have laughed in her face despite my strong desire to heal our relationship even then. An overly indulgent attempt to debunk myths like the "perfect girl" or the "supermom," this book is mainly a solution for upper class white folks who have a built-in support system ready to consciousness-raise and spend long hours dissecting how to best grow their relationships.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful resource for parents.......2007-08-31

I think "The Mother-Daughter Project" is a terrific book. I have recommended it to parents that I see in my practice as a child psychiatrist, to friends who have daughters, and to anyone whom I meet who has daughters! I believe this book is a rich tool, from the perspective of understanding and, most beneficially, from the perspective of practice: on how to foster strong, nurturing, and enjoyable bonds between mothers and daughters and between mothers and mothers. The common experiences and challenges that different generations of females encounter in our society, and life itself, as well as the resources needed to meet those challenges, are richly explored in this book through the discussion of the evolution of the mother-daughter group.
With detail and humor, the authors share with the reader the journey of this group of mothers and daughters over 10 years, as they start meeting monthly when the daughters are seven years old and continue up to the time of college. We learn about the very rich array of activities that these very thoughtful and intentional mothers used to educate their daughters about the tasks they will encounter in each coming stage in their development. Age specific challenges to mothers and daughters, together and separately, are covered in an overview level and in the very rich detailed activities the mothers and daughters used to prepare for, practice, and develop the skills and abilities to deal with all that is involved in moving from protected childhood into adulthood. This book is a wonderful resource to all parents-whether or not they are in such groups.

4 out of 5 stars great message for mothers and daughters!.......2007-05-20

I bought this book earlier today and am over halfway through it. I am the mother of two daughters, age 9 & 12. While I wish I had this book five years ago, it doesn't feel like it's too late. A great resource for years to come, with positive self, daughter and relationship building ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly simple way to understand a complex subject.......2007-08-28

I took a class on the Enneagram and was made aware of a couple of other books I purchased, but these were very difficult to get through and pretty involved. I am a slow reader, so when I purchased this book, I was thrilled that it was so "Easy" to understand. It was written in such easy language, had comic pictures, and was easy enough for my kids to read and help them understand what number they were too. This whole Enneagram concept has really helped our family better understand why each of us is the way we are. A very helpful tool!

5 out of 5 stars The Enneagram Made Easy.......2007-08-05

This is an accurate, funny and engaging look at the enneagram which includes a lot of practical advice, not only for learning more about your own personality type, but also helpful hints for dealing with other types.

5 out of 5 stars The concept and this book are awesome.......2007-04-12

I read this in conjunction with a few other (perhaps more serious) books on the Enneagram. WHich, by the way, is awesome. If you have ever read your horoscope, or the birthday analysis book, or for that matter have had your Myers-Briggs personality type analyzed, you will LOVE this book. I find this to be better than any personality inventory, much more accurate and actually takes into account the very, very complex nature of our personalities as human beings. It is spiritual and helped to change my life, actually. This particular book takes a light-hearted yet educational approach to the 9 types outlined in the Enneagram. Fun to read, actually humorous at times. I have to say that everyone I have showed this to is amazed at the accuracy. A good intro to the Enneagram.

5 out of 5 stars Getting Along is Matter of Type.......2007-02-14

This is an easy read into the world of the Enneagram ... and its concepts of 9 basic personality types and their core drives and key characteristics. While most other books on the subject are more in depth this is a quick study into the notion that being you CAN make sense. Even more important, the Enneagram book tells us HOW to get along with one another with its insights into the various types and their "wings". Knowing tendancies along with basic character and temperament are fascinating and helpful in a sea of personalities we must deal with. Check out this guide and see what you discover about you.

3 out of 5 stars OK Book.......2006-11-08

Vague, rather scattered information, but interesting concept with general overview given - should probably read another more detailed book if more serious infomation regarding this theory is desired.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive work.......2007-08-31

I had read that the book was "the Bible" of backgammon. But I think it is more than this, it is the definitive book on the game, it is the Bible, the Torah and the Koran all together. Other books simply repeat - sometimes with other words - what Magriel has said.
Besides he goes deep in his comments on various aspects of the game like "builders", flexibility and so on.
If you are interested in the game or want to improve this is THE book!

5 out of 5 stars It's not the delivery; it's the content.......2007-09-25

Blue Ocean Strategies are responsible for HUGE amounts of wealth having been generated by many people and many companies.

However, these CD's are delivered with NO Narrative and since the concepts in the book are shared using diagramatic tools which clarify the text; listening can some times be trying and laborious.

Getting past that will reward you with a whole new way to think of markets and marketing.

I recommend them for those interested in the subject for more than just entertainment. You'll want to read the book to get the part you miss.

4 out of 5 stars Several chapters too long.......2007-09-23

Overall this is a fantastic title but condensed it is not. The authors could have written it in half as many pages without losing any useful information. In terms of content its a solid 8 our of 10.

2 out of 5 stars Game show host voice with many mispronunciations.......2007-07-09

I must say that there were some interesting observations conveyed throughout the book, but the 'Game Show Host Voice' of the reader, the many mispronunciations, and the shear repetition of only vaguely interesting business examples from 100 years ago leads me to giving this book a low score.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-06-27

I have read many management books and was looking for a good book on strategy and strategic planning. I bought Strategic Planning for Idiots and it is just that. By contrast Blue Ocean is insightful, applicable and gives a frame of work to get an organization to think about value innovation.
The audio CDs are great! The reader is really good.

3 out of 5 stars Blue Oceans Okay.......2007-05-30

The CD version of the book was okay. Some good ideas sprinkled throughout the book but a fair amount of repetition of the same ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the uninitiated (to a raw food diet).......2007-09-30

I am just exploring the raw food lifestyle for health reasons. I purchased 4 recommended cookbooks, and found this one to be heads and shoulders above the rest. It has great recipes, that go as far as to describe the texture you should be looking for as you process the food. She goes into detail about sprouting and making nut milks, which I was greatful to find at last. She opened my eyes to the variety of foods I have overlooked, and to the amount of food I waste, for example taking seeds from my squashes and broccoli for sprouting instead of tossing them, and using the pared scraps from food for juicing. I highly recommend this book, expecially for a beginner.

5 out of 5 stars BEST Raw Book!.......2007-09-24

This book is AWESOME - I've made tons of things and they are so tasty and satisfying, that it's completely transitioning me away from cooked food and wheat/grain products effortlessly. I've lost almost 20 lbs in 6 weeks, just a bi-product of adopting a pure, healthy, vegan way of eating. I don't feel any deprivation or pine for anything, mostly due to her book. I have other raw books that I found either too complex or just so-so in the taste of the end result - her recipes, to me, are mostly simple, with accessible/common ingredients, and with an end-result of gourmet perfection. The Pear Torte - oh, my! - my 8 year old son just couldn't get enough! (and I can hardly wait to make the Choconot Mousse Pie!) I look forward every day to making her recipes, and for years to come because there are so many in here.

I disagree with some of the other reviewers that the food index is a waste of time. I think her point is to open your eyes to the plethora and abundance of the plant food kingdom - to focus on the amazing variety available to us. No one can ask "Well WHAT do you eat??" with an index like that available for you to learn about and make your new pantry. The colorless bread and potatoes on my counter top have been replaced with a beautiful and vibrant array of fruits and vegetables: bananas, avocados, strawberries, tomatoes, coconuts, dates, nuts and so much more - my new staples. I feel inspired every day to cook and eat! (And of course so much healthier.)

I also love that there's a tad of steaming/blanching, etc, because for me, eating raw broccoli and asparagus, etc. is just not an option. I think with that slight adjustment this way of eating is not only doable, but WAY preferred over my old way of eating (vegetarian version of the SAD diet). Many kudos to Renee - thank you, thank you!!

5 out of 5 stars Best raw bang for your buck!.......2007-09-23

What a lovely book. It's big and very useful. Even the layout is soft and engaging.

The first roughly half of the book covers an extensive description about every type of utensil you will need to make these dishes. I read that this annoyed one person, however I feel that breaking down all the different types of juicers would be of benefit to those that don't have one.

Renee also gets into lots of detail on things like good oils and salts, sprouting and even cutting techniques.

With over 300 recipes I think has got to be the best value for money. It covers a wide range of topics so you are going to find plenty of foods you are going to love. Plenty of nut / seed milks and cheeses, pies, quiches - it's got them all.

Some dishes are quick and simple, while others are more complex, but oh what a taste.

I found the book has just enough white space in the margins for me to jot down my notes on each dish. The only thing that could be improved is a thicker card for the cover as it is a reference book. I feel mine got doggy eared quicker than normal. Only a minor issue that can be compensated for with a bit of clear sticky covering like in school.

Don't let that put you off though the content is what you buy the book for and its got plenty of that - Good on you Renee and team.

1 out of 5 stars If I wanted a kitchen inventory, I'd look in the kitchen...........2007-09-09

Approximately 175 pages of this book is dedicated to dull descriptions of fruits, vegetables, and a complete inventory of kitchen appliances and tools. I couldn't even bear to get to the recipes, so I can't comment on them.

It might not be so bad if things like nutritional value, interesting uses, or complementary foods were identified, but this book wastes a tree describing the most basic features of apples to yams.

You'll really want to poke your eyes out when you get to the kitchen inventory. If the author had focused on things that make a raw kitchen complete, that would probably be ok, but if I wanted a description of a spatula I would hand one to a 5 year old and get something more interesting.

If you are seriously looking for good information and recipes for a raw food diet, check out Raw Food/Real World: 100 Recipes to Get the Glow or Raw: The Uncook Book: New Vegetarian Food for Life. Both have provided us with valuable information and delicious recipes.

4 out of 5 stars okay book.......2007-08-17

Was any editor involved before publishing? Half of the book provide little or zero information. I mean author describe every single piece of food, like broccoli for example. Even pork chop eaters are familiar with vegetables and fruits this author describes. It is good to know your audience. And raw food audience is much more advanced. So forget half of the book and go to recipes. I found it interesting that some of the food is steamed. Now how can that be raw?! Of course the middle part could be uncooked, but that's the same as eating stir fried vegies. The nuts used in recipes--not all of them are sprouted. I did not try that many recipes, so my review is incomplete, but from what I tried, the recipes are hit and miss. Certainly they are easy to prepare and some of them are EXTREMELY delicious --these make this book worthy to buy. My complaint is that there are no pictures. Why? With digital photography and cheap printing, I should have been inspired. I looked when this book was published (2003) and I think this author-chef is pioneer and others who followed perfected, derived inspiration from her recipes. Recipes are easy to make, it is true and this is really great part. Definitely very useful book for somebody who likes raw,but is not willing to commit life to food preparation:-)

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator temperament test is given annually to millions of people, mainly business students and job applicants. But what good does it do, short of giving you a catchy-sounding, four-letter abbreviation (ENTJ, ISFP) that you can sometimes use to break the ice at cocktail parties? The aim of this book is to help you apply your knowledge to the benefit of both your work and love life--and to teach you how to prevent personality clashes by slightly adjusting your behavior around others, once you ascertain which "type" they fall under.

The four areas covered by Myers-Briggs are how you relate to the world (Extraverting or Introverting); how you take in information (Sensing or iNtuiting); how you make decisions (Thinking or Feeling); and how you manage your life (by Judging or Perceiving). If you don't already know your profile, take the fun and quick 20-question quizzes for each of the four categories. (Do you dislike routine and repetition? Do you prefer to finish one project before starting another, or does that not matter to you? Do people seek you out for warmth and nurturing?) You're then given tons of tips for getting along in this world. ESFPs are warned that they should not get involved in too many activities, lest they forget their responsibilities. INTJs need to learn to be more flexible, and are sometimes best off working for themselves. If you're dating someone who's an NF, "give them cards, gifts, compliments, hugs, adoration, and other forms of loving attention"; they enjoy romance and need this kind of doting.

There's also fascinating information about which functions are dominant in each of the 16 types, and how they're broken out by percentages, population-wide.

Book Description

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the most widely used psychological indicator in the world. Millions of people take the test annually. Now a family therapist explains this fascinating system of ideas to the public in a way that is entertaining and easy to absorb. Based on the work of Carl Jung, the MBTI is a system that discusses people's individual preferences on four basic scales: how they relate to the world, take in information, make decisions, and manage their lives. Renee Baron takes on the complexity of the sixteen personality types and makes them accessible so the general reader can comprehend them, find their own type, and use the knowledge to enrich their own lives. She presents information about individual strengths and weaknesses along with suggestions for personal growth and awareness. Insightful, helpful, and encouraging, What Type Am I? is the only user-friendly guide to the MBTI--and an eminently useful step in helping individuals appreciate, and apply their strength, to work, love, and life.
Baron has co-authored two bestselling books: Are You My Type, Am I Yours and The Eneagram Made Easy

4 out of 5 stars Great starter for 10 .......2007-03-19

This is a great book if you are just starting out on your understanding of personality type and myers briggs. It gives you enough detail to provide you with understanding but doesn't overwhelm you with talk of the more advanced applications of the theory.

This would have got 5 stars if I had read it a couple of years ago!

4 out of 5 stars Very simple and helpful.......2007-03-13

The myers briggs info here is very simplified. There are a number of pages to give you a perspnality test and get you on the way to better understanding what "type" you are. Helpful info but also get other books to give you insight as to the "type" breakdowns.

5 out of 5 stars informative, accurate, and interesting.......2007-01-09

This is a good basis for the personality types, and one that seemed to be accurate and informative. It's interesting to read and will help with not only your own personality, but also with interacting with other personality types and understanding them better.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2006-11-05

This book was TOO 'easy'. I wanted a summary, but the text read more like a magazine article than a serious discussion and comparison of the personality types.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and fun introduction to Myers-Brigg Types.......2006-09-26

This short and fun book is a wonderful introduction to the Myers-Brigg types. It is written in an easy to understand, humorous style and is meant to be as entertaining as it is educational. If you want to know the basics and have a good laugh this short book will not disappoint you. It is also well-organized and contains quite a few great cartoons.

2 out of 5 stars boring.......2007-09-29

What a disappointing little book! It took me forever to finish it, mainly because I kept losing interest every 4-5 pages. Don't know why I bothered.

I can't even tell what it was about... the story was so lame. Even the "innovative" sex scenes were lame. Some of them sounded downright unpleasant and unbelievable. The characters were so shallow. Revenge for something I couldn't muster any passion for. Attraction. Sex. That's it.

Having read the other reviews, I expected so much of this book, I was sorely disappointed. Also, it is supposed to be happening in Victorian England, but it felt very Regency. I think the author didn't do any research at all. She must have read a lot of regency romance and decided, "Hey, what the heck... no one would notice anyway..."

Well, I did. I like to take something from books that I read, even if it is an idea, a description, a phrase, a word, an emotion. This book gave me nothing to take with me. A Lady's Pleasure is by far the most superficial book I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-08-16

I LOVED THIS BOOK! A Lady's Pleasure is Renee Bernard's debut novel. I have to tell you that I am waiting on pins and needles for her next book, Madame's Deception, due at the end of this month.

The sex scenes were awesome. Any book that starts out with sex in the very first chapter is a book that I'm not likely to put down until I've read it cover to cover, which was the case with A Lady's Pleasure. The story was good too. Drake Sotherland and Merriam Everett were both extremely well developed characters. Lots of description and interesting dialogue.

Each scene was set very well with just the right amount of description without giving too much. The secondary characters added to the story without being unnecessary distractions. There was just enough about two of the secondary characters to make you hope for a 2nd book (and luckily there will be one).

5 out of 5 stars HOT.......2007-08-13

This book gets right into it, the first chapter is full of very hot sex which appears quite steadily throughout the story. But typically such steam falls apart without a good story, but fortunately this noval has. In a case of mistaken identity, the lead character Merriam Everett, a shy, conservative young widow, seduces the wrong man in an act of revenge at being called a "whey faced widow". Thus begins the mingling story lines as she goes through her normal daily routines eventually learning she did seduce the wrong man, and as the man she did seduce-Drake Sotherton-tries to figure out who she was. Until they meet and the sparks fly. This book had me chuckling, blushing, and reading on! And underneath it all was the on-going story of Drake and Julian (the man Merriam meant to seduce) - their painful shared past, and Drake's suspicions that somehow Julian and Merriam are in league together. A few times I did find myself skimming through some sex scenes as I really wanted to find out what happened next as 3 or 4 pages of passion was a bit of an interuption to that story. But overall, it more than met it's purpose to entertain! Can't wait to read more of her books!

5 out of 5 stars Discover a new and passionate author who'll leave you breathless.......2007-08-08

If you've loved Lisa Valdez, Candice Hern and Elizabeth Hoyt, then discover a new and passionate author who'll leave you breathless. Merriam Everett is out for revenge against the arrogant lord who disparaged her. For one night only she'll transform herself into a captivating lady of the night and then seduce and discard her unknowing tormenter. But then, "the best laid plans.." and all that, it seems like she might have got the wrong man. Drake Sotherton, The Duke of Sussex has only recently returned to England after a self imposed exile, and like Merriam he's seeking revenge against Julian Clay. His plan is to seduce Clay's mistress to begin then path to his destruction. However though the initial encounter was fierier then he expected he and the lady never exactly exchanged names and now he has to track down the masked temptress to continue his plan. Merriam meanwhile is suffering the joint agonies of mortification and yearning, and when Drake finally finds her and offers her the position of his mistress she throws caution to the wind and embraces a passion that sweeps her up and scandalizes all who know her. Drake cannot reconcile this shy, sweet woman with the position of lover to Julian Clay, and his uncontrollable desire for her threatens to undo all his carefully laid plans. This is fantastic stuff!! Intense, passionate and erotic, Renee Bernard has created a couple beset with secrets but determined to fully embrace their incendiary bond.

5 out of 5 stars Deliciously hot!.......2007-05-13

A fine tale of mistaken identity and sexual discovery. A good story needs to have characters you care about and a good plot line as well as great sex. This is a good story.

Tracy DiSabato-Aust's Well-Designed Mixed Garden provides sound direction for plant lovers looking to free their garden from the doldrums and fashion a rich tapestry of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, vines, grasses, and bulbs. Encyclopedic in scope yet unfailingly attentive to essential details, The Well-Designed Mixed Garden effectively summarizes an array of basic garden design considerations and fundamentals. There are particularly useful chapters on color theory and on drawing up a plan, with precise instructions on what size plants to purchase and how to space them. As with her highly regarded Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting & Pruning Techniques, DiSabato-Aust delves eagerly into plant maintenance, a topic too many garden writers overlook. Though many examples are from the author's own garden or other American Midwest locations, they're largely applicable to other plant hardiness zones. Of particular appeal are a nicely photographed section on attractive plant combinations and a series of handy appendixes for plant selection. Beginners may be overwhelmed by this book's wealth of information, but its comprehensiveness renders it all the more valuable for seasoned gardeners seeking greater practical know-how and a surer grasp of the art of gardening. --Jennifer Wyatt

Book Description

The Well-Designed Mixed Garden is a design book with a difference. Written for gardeners who are passionate about plants of all kinds (hence the "mixed garden" of the title), it reflects decades of professional experience and artistic innovation. As with her bestselling book The Well-Tended Perennial Garden, master designer and plantswoman Tracy DiSabato-Aust provides not only inspiration but also scrupulously organized information on design and connoisseur plants — all from original research dating back to her degree work in horticulture.

Her new offering is a master class of design fundamentals, with an emphasis on often-neglected topics, such as site evaluation, color theory, and planning for maintenance. It is also a gallery of detailed design plans that show how ideas are put onto paper and then translated into three dimensions. Lessons learned in its first two parts are strengthened in an "Encyclopedia of Plant Combinations"; each entry notes the design considerations at play and provides tips on how to keep the combination looking its best. And the lifetime care needs and unique design characteristics of featured plants are summarized in the useful charts and lists that conclude the book. The result is a nearly foolproof guide to every aspect of designing superior gardens with superior plants. With more than 250 color photos and illustrations, this book is as much a feast for the eyes as it will be a trusted reference for the library shelf.

5 out of 5 stars A Flower Gardener's Companion.......2007-09-03

Comprehensive and very user friendly. A book every home flower gardner would want to have.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not as good as I thought it would be.......2007-05-16

I've heard other gardeners talk about Tracy's books and what an inspiration they are, so I bought "The Well-Designed Mixed Garden" expecting to learn some GREAT ideas for my gardens. It has some good information on principles of design and how to work with color, texture, and so on. But I was disappointed at how weak and uninspiring the section is on plant combinations. She calls it an "encyclopedia of plant combinations," and the section is full of photos of flowers and plants she thinks are winning combinations. The combinations mostly have no real visual appeal, the photos (in that section) are plain, and it's a wasted section of the book. I think there was only one of these combinations that actually looked beautiful. Most of these photos were from her own garden, and perhaps she let her personal affection for her own gardens cloud her judgment on what to include.

I like the rest of the book, however, and her examples of garden designs in other parts of the book have good photos and design layout drawings that are quite useful.

5 out of 5 stars Useful no matter what your garden needs.......2007-05-13

This book is so helpful in figuring out how to mix flowers and plants in border-type gardens. It details color combinations and tells what flowers go well together. It provides pictures of various gardens in different season to provide an idea of how the landscape will look in Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

5 out of 5 stars Very good information and easy to understand.......2007-02-05

This is the first book I would recomend to anyone! Ms. Disabato-Aust compiles a vast amount of quality information in one book, and she explains abstract concepts in a way that regular people who aren't master gardeners can understand. She also includes insights from her vast experience; it's not a dry recitation seen in other sources. She explains when and why to break the generally-accepted guidelines.

I've been a hard-core gardener for about three years, and I've already gleaned some of the information from other sources. But I had to read a lot of different books and articles to get it, and it was often contradictory. The book not only ties it all together in a cohesive manner, but gives very detailed examples.

I particularly enjoyed the section on combinations, where Ms. Disabato-Aust explains why certain things work together in a converational tone. Far from being a preening dilletante, the author's manner is friendly and warm.

I only had two complaints, and they are possibly unique to me. As you might expect, the "example" gardens shown used Ms. Disabato-Aust's style of gardening. It's wonderful, but I have a different style, and would have appreciated seeing the gardening principles illustrated using different styles. Second, I garden in North Florida. A fair number of the plants that look so beautiful in her Ohio garden wouldn't make it in North Florida.

5 out of 5 stars Destined to be a classic garden reference........2006-03-24

I'm a master gardener from Illinois, and have heard Tracy Disabato-Aust on a number of occasions. Her book The Well-Tended Perennial Garden has long been our bible for perennials. In this new book, she makes accessible for all gardeners the depth of her experience and research in incorporating many kinds of plants in a mixed border. The book is worth buying for the appendices alone: plants by design and maintenance characteristics as well as common/scientific name cross-references. A must-have garden reference book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Primer.......2007-02-16

I am new to the Customer Service arena and I found this book to be very useful. The information goes beyond the common sense approach to customer service (treat people the way you want to be treated).

It is a training manual for those who what to learn about cusomer service or to use to teach others customer service. It also includes checklists and worksheets you can use to train customer service.

It is easy to read and very interesting, meaning it wasn't written like a text book.

As I said, I am new to customer service and I found the book very helpful to me. This was my first customer service book I read, and I have since read a couple more books and they essentially say the same things as Customer Service Training 101.

I have been recommending this book to others as a good customer service primer.

5 out of 5 stars Customer Satisfaction.......2005-09-16

Renee Evenson's first two books ("Customer Service 101: Basic Lessons To Be Your Best" and "Customer Service 201: Managing Your People To Be Their Best")were invaluable in training our information desk staff how to meet and greet the public. The two books contain a wealth of practical, good-sense suggestions and information about how to provide exceptional customer service.

"Customer Service Training 101" covers much of the same ground, but is presented in a format that enables a trainer to effectively and efficiently teach employees the customer care concepts necessary to "get great results." Evenson covers everything from communication and ethical issues to relationship building, difficult customer contacts, and e-commerce.

"Customer Service Training 101" is the best and most thorough publication on the subject of customer care that I've encountered to-date. The book is packed with valuable information. In each chapter, Evenson includes general information on the topic at hand, presents a brief scenario of a situation not handled well, outlines the key points covered in the chapter and explains each point in depth, step-by-step. She follows that up with a scenario where the situation is handled correctly, a summary of key points and steps, an interactive training lesson, and excellent "quick quotations for memory joggers." Tips and topics for group brainstorming sessions are also included.

The book is well-written, thorough, and easy to understand. If you've been searching for the definitive work on customer service, search no more. This is it!
