If you are interested in an approach to biology through the cell, natural selection, and genetics, this is for you.......2007-07-03
This is a text on biology that emphasizes the cell, evolution through natural selection, and DNA. These are all important and lead to a much better understanding of life on earth, but if you want a text that emphasizes the classifications of life forms on Earth, this text will likely not be what you want. However, if you want to get a handle on how cells work, how the various forms of cells are similar and different, what the very important chemical processes are in the cell, and how these are used by the various life forms on Earth, and how these life forms fit into and influence the ecology of their environment, this is a very solid text. It will help to have some basic understanding of chemistry because the book is based on that approach and doesn't bother to explain the basic concepts (if it did, it would become a chemistry text).
It is wonderfully illustrated and well organized text and its writing is clear and helpful. Yes, it necessarily simplifies the more detailed aspects of atomic structure and chemistry, but it does so in a way that the student knows that more study will be required to dig into that topic more fully.
It has 55 chapters that are organized into 9 large units (the book as about 1,300 pages long). The units are:
1) The Origin and Early Evolution of Life
2) Cell Structure and Function
3) Gene Structure and Expression
4) Developmental Biology
5) Evolutionary Processes and Patterns
6) The Diversification of Life
7) How Plants Work
8) How Animals Work
9) Ecology
I have found reading it to be helpful and informative. Again, the writing is quite clear and it uses illustrations very well to help the text make its points. The important thing to know is whether this is the kind of biology text you are looking for. I think it can help its readers learn to think about life and biology in a scientific way and help them develop the mental tools necessary to tackle deeper biological issues, and that is a good thing. The authors ask the students to check their understanding every step of the way with in chapter articles illustrating the point being made (and often asks questions to help focus thinking). Each chapter starts listing the most important points the chapter will make, and summarizes those concepts at the end. There are also a few multiple choice problems to help the student verify that he or she understands the big concepts of the material.
Each chapter also provides a concept review and topics for group discussion. There are also many online helps for the students that supplement what is given in the book. In the body of the text it points to the online supplementary material so the student can get additional insight to the material being studied.
Exceptionally quick response from vendor.......2007-03-09
Product delivery was held up due to bad weather. Unaware of this, I emailed the vendor to ensure the product had been shipped; vendor response was very prompt, professional, and polite. I received the product shortly after, which was exactly as described. Please note that the actual delivery time was not outside of the time guaranteed; it was just later than the time period to which I had become accustomed regarding other purchases from Amazon.

The Tracker.......2007-09-30
This is a "don't miss" book for anyone who wants to observe anything in nature. Tom Brown is a legend in the worlds of search and rescue, tracking, and survival. Brown is one with nature and he brings you along on his exhilerating journey from boy to man of nature. In this, his first of many outstanding books, you accompany him as he learns his skills from his Indian grandfather.
FYI. Brown continues to share his skills with new through advanced students at workshops. A friend who has attended his classes, swears Brown is everthing you will see here and much more. It is a fascinating story.
A journey through the eyes of a Lipan Apache holy man........2007-06-26
All of Tom's books are required reading for anyone seeking to sustain our lives in honest practice of a set of propositions not predicated on left brain hegemony. Brown offers the story of his mentorship under the tutiledge of this Lipan Apache Holy Man, Elder, and Sage, showing us how to reaquaint ourselves with a wisdom tradition long lost to Eurocentric peoples. This journey takes place on multiple levels and within various contexts purporting to awaken spiritual awareness and an ancient way of knowing. For modern man or women this awakening may provide a jolt or be met with suspicion or even derision. But for those capable of going deeper into these mysteries, the rewards can be life changing.
This is the first book in Tom Brown's series on a way-of-knowing that was practiced by First Peoples long before rationalism took hold as a religion of the mind. If you are seeking a way to go deeper into the core of your being recognizing that your culture no longer speaks to your soul, then these propositions may provide healing water. Enter at the risk of transforming your life and braking the chains that bind you to a cultural cage.
Great book.
Definately the worst book involving Tom Brown.......2007-04-20
this book is the only one of Tom Brown's books that i read through but didn't completely enjoy. I think mainly because it is the story of Tom Brown Jr. as told to William Jon Watkins. I think Watkins tries to make it sound a little too poetic and loses a lot in his "translations" of Tom's stories. If you just want a good book about Tom Brown Jr., and not a field guide or a poor interpretation of his life, I would strongly recommend "Case Files the Tracker." it tells some of the same stories and many different, but i find it remarkably more interesting.
Stop and Smell the Roses.......2007-04-12
Learn to appreciate nature and the great outdoors with this adventure. A boy is inspired by the adults around him to change his outlook.
A good read especially for scouts.......2007-02-06
This is a good book especially for outdoor-oriented people or people involved with scouting. It really shows how a boy can be inspired by the adults around him and ultimately change his whole outlook on life.
Book Description
In a typical organization, there's always plenty that to do such as: pay vendors, invoice customers, answer customer inquiries, and fix bugs in hardware or software. You need to know who wants what and keep track of what is left to do.
This is where a ticketing system comes in. A ticketing system allows you to check the status of various tasks: when they were requested, who requested them and why, when they were completed, and more. RT is a high-level, open source ticketing system efficiently enabling a group of people to manage tasks, issues, and requests submitted by a community of users.
RT Essentials, co-written by one of the RT's original core developers, Jesse Vincent, starts off with a quick background lesson about ticketing systems and then shows you how to install and configure RT. This comprehensive guide explains how to perform day-to-day tasks to turn your RT server into a highly useful tracking tool. One way it does this is by examining how a company could use RT to manage its internal processes. Advanced chapters focus on developing add-on tools and utilities using Perl and Mason. There's also chapter filled with suggested uses for RT inside your organization.
No matter what kind of data your organization tracks--from sales inquiries to security incidents or anything in between--RT Essentials helps you use RT to provide order when you need it most.

Dissappointing.......2007-01-11
I was very dissappointed with RT Essentials. I had been using and administering an older version of RT for some time, but when I upgraded to the current version I thought I would benefit from reading this book. There are a lot of new features in the later versions and this book just barely mentions them. I had the feeling that it just almost told me what I wanted to know, but not quite. I would very much like to see an expanded, more detailed more comprehensive edition. I think it would take a book twice the size of the current edition to do RT right. I want complete tutorials on writing scrips, using templates, using custom fields, using saved searches, etc.
Helpful, but already dated.......2006-08-07
Request Tracker (RT) is a great product. I am the only sysadmin at a small company, and having an automated tracking system is going to be an immense benefit for me. I bought "RT Essentials" to help me get up to speed on RT3 really quickly. And, since it was written by the programmer who's responsible for RT, the book had lots of detail and tips.
However, when it came down to implementing some of the code in the book, I found that it was already outdated. For example, I tried to set up the Autoreply template with Password by copying the code straight out of the book. It didn't work because the program codebase has changed too much since the book was released.
I was able to fix my template problem by hooking into the great RT user community, where the author contributes frequently.
All in all, I thought the book was really helpful for getting RT installed and getting me up to speed. For the nitty-gritty, I'd rely on the online wiki and great user community.
Excellent Software, but Average Book.......2006-05-01
We've been using RT for several years. As one happy customer mentions at Best Practical's site, managing a project or service driven organization without RT is like watching TV without a TiVo. The software is powerful, flexible, and above all, adaptable to many styles of management for more than just technology projects. No question, the software gets 5 stars.
This book, however, is largely a reorganization of the information provided with the software. If you prefer to read printed materials instead of PDFs or HTML, this book will save you money on printer paper. But if you're looking for best practices, recipies, or enhancements such as those you'll find in the RT Wiki, you may be disappointed. In fact, for most of the advanced capabilities, you are referred by the book to other resources. The book does contain the occasional nugget, such as a half dozen lines of code to truly delete a ticket and related data. With some searching, you'd be able to find those, and better, at the RT Wiki, such as the particuarly valuable contributions from the University of Oslo (do an A9 search for "RT prosjektgruppen").
Compared to most O'Reilly books which set the bar for excellence, this one is merely average. However, I do recommend this book as an introduction for those considering whether it's worthwhile to move to RT from some other enterprise ticketing system, and for techs to give to managers who are more comfortable with hard copies than electronic documents. For any RT admin, it's certainly worthwhile to have documentation printed and organized in an easy reference, considering how much you've saved on the excellent software itself.
QUITE THE TRACKER!!.......2006-02-21
Are you an end-user, system administrator or developer who interacts with RT on an occasional or regular basis? Authors Jesse Vincent, Robert Spier, Dave Rolsky, Darren Chamberlain and Richard Foley, have written an outstanding book that is for everybody who has to use RT to manage tasks.
Vincent, Spier, Rolsky, Chamberlain and Foley, begin by providing some background about what ticketing systems are and how they can help save your job and your sanity. Then, they walk you through the process of setting up an RT server and configuring sane system defaults. The authors continue by showing you how to get up and running with RT's web interface. In addition, they explain how to interact with RT from your shell or console window. The authors also step you through the basics of turning a virgin RT server into a useful tool for tracking what you need to do inside your organization. Then, the authors show you how to extend RT's standard behavior with custom business logic. Next, they provide a look inside the RT configuration at Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems, a nonexistent company that makes heavy use of RT to manage their internal processes. Next, the authors walk you through RT's files on disk; as well as, the details of its database tables. Then, they describe how DBIx::SearchBuilder works. Finally, they show you how to set up a local sandbox for modifying and extending RT without putting your production server in harm's way.
This excellent book will be considerably more useful to you if you have at least a basic understanding of the Unix command line. Above all, this book will be very useful to you if you also have a basic understanding of Unix systems administration skills, and at least a little bit of experience programming in Perl.
general inner structure of RT .......2005-09-25
The RT Essential describes the general inner structure of RT software. It mainly helps RT user to understand how to install RT and how to use other tool software ,such as perl and mason ,to develope RT for his own construct. It describes each item in RT generally.
RT has many application.many company use it to develope custumer service system,So I hope the author to write developer book on RT for programming.

Trip Tracker is Rand McNally's travel gift to parents of children ages 8 and older. Enclosed within its spiral- bound covers are pages of games, songs, puzzles, and activities guaranteed to keep youngsters occupied in the backseat of a car or the passenger seat of a train or airplane. In addition, there's a packet of colored markers, stickers, and postcards, plus plenty of space to record travel memories, doodles, and lists. A word to the wise, however: if you don't want to be driven mad by all the verses of "99 Miles to Go on Our Trip," consider quietly removing the pages entitled "Songs to Drive the Grown Ups Crazy!"

A great book for traveling!.......2007-01-11
I had hunted all over for a fun journal or scrapbook for my 2 boys to take on vacation with us to Walt Disney World. I wanted something easy enough for an 8 year old and a 10 year old to fill in on their own, yet have it be something nice enough to keep for a keepsake. I was very happy with this journal and gamebook! There were lots of games in the back of the book that I never heard "mom, I'm bored!" It was broke down into days and I loved that there was a place for them to fill in the weather and their mood for the day! I'd highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun way to record a vacation and have a great keepsake when it's done. My boys loved writing in it and took it to school for a vacation presentation to their class! The teachers loved the journals and asked where I go them!!
Are We Where Yet?.......2001-01-26
Travel can be confusing (and sometimes boring) to children, but this journal can help parents deal with that! My daughter and I found this book in the Houston airport as we were browsing stores during a long layover. I bought it out of desperation (after all, it had markers and blank pages!), but it turned out to be a wonderful investment. It is a very kid-oriented travel journal, with questions, hints, and prompts to guide the young journalist through recording their trip(s). It gives you and your child something to do together while flying or at night in the hotel, and as an extra bonus, it's a great show-and-tell item when your child returns to school. I've saved the journal for my daughter's trunk, so that years from now she can read her own thoughts about Oregon and Arizona! We highly recommend this!! (One aside: smart six and seven year olds will do just fine with this journal if you work with them.)
Don't leave home without it!.......2000-11-07
This travel journal is an excellent tool to capture vacation memories and relive them for a lifetime. The journal boasts brightly colored "topic" pages along with markers and stickers which allows the child's creativity to shine through in words and/or artwork. We've used this travel journal for three vacations and wouldn't leave home without it!
Makes 15-hour ride fun.......2000-07-25
We have used this book for three long car trips--800 miles each way. It has provided us with a wonderful journal to look back on in later years. In addition, the games, activities, and songs in the book help make a long car ride fun. I just bought four more to give as gifts. This book is wonderful for anyone, not just kids.
A great travel journal for kids!.......2000-06-07
I bought 2 of these journals for my 2 kids to take on a recent cross-country trip to visit relatives. The journals have a page to record what happens each day, plus a whole section of travel games. The kids had fun writing in their journals every day, and now we can look back and remember all the fun we had!

Arrived On time and in Great Condition. It's a little smaller than I anticipated...but pictures sometimes are a little deceiving
Great!.......2007-05-06
This is an excellent food journal and a great tool for keeping track of food, exercise, supplements, etc ....all neatly organized. Love it! It's the best I've found.
nice book.......2007-03-26
Could use a graph to chart weight changes visually but otherwise a great log.
Keep track of the fat.......2007-03-08
This journal is unique in that it focuses on helping a person track their fat intake and their exercise. Fat intake is one of the most destructive ways to undermine one's weight loss efforts.
I like that there is an amount of "space" dedicated to writing down meals and snacks, places to write down calorie counts, amount of carbs, protein, fiber and the eveil "fat" grams. The other thing that is great is that there are are check lists for how much water, how many grains, veggies, fruit servings, meat and dairy. It makes the process of tracking simple.
There is also a place to write down vitamins, medicines and other supplements.
Not only is there a space for physical activities such as walking, there is a space to write down weight training. There is also a place to write down notes.
The key to success with weight loss is writing your food and activity down in a journal. Many times we are not aware of the amount of fat grams we are consuming, and writing in a journal can help to create awareness about things we are doing to sabotage our diet that we were perhaps unaware of.
I give the FAT TRACKER five stars because it is a comprehensive way to keep track, without getting locked into a dated journal. The dates are written in by the user.
Fantastic journal for weight loss and managment.......2006-09-08
I would like to recommend this journal to anyone who is dieting or has to meet daily nutritional needs. This book is compact and can easily be put into a purse or briefcase. It discusses the food pyramid and has helpful hints on keeping your daily food goals. It can be used with any diet and exercise program as a tool. I can keep track of the food I eat. The Fat Tracker also lists the fat, carbs, protein and fiber in the food list. The Fat Tracker makes it so easy to journal and see how I'm doing. I really like the fact that there is a place for physical activity, along with a place to write down my medications and notes on how I feel that day, all in one journal. It really is great to have all this information in one little book. The journal is a tool for you to see if you eating healthy and smart.

Erotic Romance burned in Adobe PDF and Ms Reader for your convenience.
"Trackers" - J.W. McKenna: Anthropology graduate student Amy Dellacroix is kidnapped by a group of wealthy men who like to hunt for sport...the naked prey they hunt is women.
"Besieged" - Jaid Black: While studying the indigenous people of Alaska for her anthropology dissertation, Peggy Brannigan is hunted down and kidnapped in the arctic by a mysterious Nordic male determined to keep her as a breeding mate.
Customer Reviews:
almost worthless... but not quite.......2007-09-28
Trapped: The story was not offensive so much as stupid. The one great selling point is that it's short. So the tedium of it doesn't last long. It's sold as erotica so you can't go into thinking it's going to be PC but come on.... We're paying good money to read your work at least put a little effort in it. A few naughty words do not an erotic romance make. What is erotic about a woman being chased by 2 old men, one with gray pubic hair (AHHHHH) and the other with low self-esteem, 1geek, 1psycho football player that date rape counselors have made a career from, the hunter from Jumanji, and a morally corrupt ethically challenged playboy. One wonders where was the partridge in the pear tree? The prize, if the boys win, is them taking turns raping her and then shaving her pubic area. ????? LOL!!!! Oh excuse me "taking her pelt". Talk about a nightmare, not so much an erotic fantasy. Give J. W. McKenna a shot of therapy and keep it coming! This is going to be a hard case.
Clearly anyone can see this is a heartwarming "true love" story. The reader figures that out right away when they read about the "hero" is one of the 6 potential rapists who paid to be in the game knowing the rules beforehand. Ummm, don't you just want to take him home to momma? That is a man to be pround of. And gosh, in the end does a girl really care if there are rapists out there kidnapping another woman if you're in love and happy? Heck no! It's every girl for herself!
And ahhh they want to have babies... it's so sweet really. Just like at the end of Natural Born Killers when you see Mallory Knox, Juliette Lewis' character has been breeding. You KNOW you want this couple to have offspring! Just like Ward and June Cleaver. They are going to be perfect parents. Well I hope they have girls so they can replenish the men's needs for victims with a capital V! Oh wait, their children will have money. Damn the luck, they are never going to be kidnapped and raped. Only poor women that don't matter socially will get that privilege.
Nice way to finish that story hon, really good job. Don't you love it when a writer ties up all the loose ends? Yeah me too... but apparently this might be a new concept to McKenna. The reader has to do more than suspend your sense of reality for this. But the biggest crime is there was nothing hot about this story it was sold as erotica and it was boring. The sex was the definition of dull.
And a side note: For those readers who might have non-consensual sex fantasies don't get excited... literally DON'T get excited and don't be fooled. This story doesn't deliver on any level, guilty pleasure or otherwise.
Besieged: This is the better story of the two but Jaid Black seems to be a bit of a one trick pony. I've only read a few her books and she seems totally obsessed with capture, humiliation, and Stockholm syndrome which is fine if that's what you are into. But every story? And the editor's claim that this is a prequel to the Death Row series? What is that about?
Besieged is a short story where the hero is one of those underground Viking type men she's written about before and the woman is supposedly intelligent or whatever but I have a hard time buying it. She's really unbelievably submissive and in the way that no one can really respect. Basically she realizes there is no reason to fight, falls in love, starts pumping out babies. Wow. Every woman's dream. Or Jaid Black's since it's the theme of every book I've read of her's so far.
I like JB books in spite of myself because I see she has talent and a rich imagination. Her books will turn you on, not this story perhaps but some of her others. So as far as erotica is concerned, give her a shot. I'm going to keep reading her in hopes that she develops her talent and gives us a different story.
So JB story is the better of two mediocre stories. Get this used or maybe electronic but not worth the paperback print price.
The Hunted Trackers and Besieged.......2007-01-16
I really enjoyed this book. It defintely has a primal edge. The thought that we as women are prey. Spicy. Defintely not the norm.
AWSOME!!!.......2006-04-07
Let me just say that I loved this book. I really enjoyed the cahse.
Trackers by J.W McKenna-Amy was kidnapped and forced to play the game. And what is the game? The game of being hunted by 6 men while your naked. But when Amy wins the hunters ask for a rematch, and Amy changes the rules. That they have to hunt her naked too. And her ally was Mr. Green(Jake).
Besieged by Jaid Black- This is a prequal story. It was just ok for me. I didn't really like it so I hope that the rest of the series is better than this one.
As you can see my preference was W.J. McKenna's story and not Jaid Blcak's. I would have purchased this book just for that story.
One great and one realy good story.......2005-11-01
"Trackers" - J.W. McKenna: 5 Stars! Amy Dellacroix is kidnapped to be hunted by a group of men who have paid good money for the privledge. If they catch her she gets $2,000 and a gang bang, if shey gets to saftey (a booth arangement) she gets $50,000. The first things that happen is while she starts on foot and unarmed (the men have a couple of tranqlulizer guns, 2 bolo guns and 2 net guns to use as well as golf carts-naturaly she is naked-she gets a gun and a golf card by out witting and out toughing the guys. This is harlious as it is what would happen with any samart woman with some intellegence and spirit when hunted by some rather dim guys.
They ask for a rematch with a $100,000 at stake but insted of getting shared if she loses the winer takes all. The change in the rules is't entirely thought through and one of the contestnts teams up with her. The results are suprising and she wins more then just the contest.
Good plot, good characters, lots of laughs.
"Besieged" - Jaid Black: 3 stars better than average for the genre. Peggy gets captured by a left over Viking that somehow got to Alaska and is part of one of 4 communites living in caves. This is pretty ridiculious to say the least. Good characters and some plot. Particularly good trick is used to get the captued woemen to go along with the program.
Not the best from Ms Black!.......2004-12-27
"The Hunted" is a two-story collection depicting two capture stories for your delectation.
The first, by JW McKenna, disappointed me greatly. I didn't like her hero/heroine by the end of the story. The plot, which revolved around a members-only woman hunt, completely withers into bits by the end. Amy, the grad student who has been stolen away, loses all of my sympathy when she embarks on a badly smiplistic romp with Jake, a guy who has paid for the privilege of sex with a woman - willing or not. The sex was Harlequin simple with a few coarse words. The assault on my morals was even worse - if you think that rapists should be punished, and that a woman should care if she's almost raped, then don't read this.
Now, Ms Jaid...my favorite...she let me down!!! The second story is about the capture of Peggy by a secretive hunter. It's pretty choppily formed and filled in with many instances of sex-after-coercion. The characters are likeable, but the heroine drops the ball and decides to happily pump out babes to please her MAN!!!! in lieu of a satisfying career in her own terms. Sigh. No good. Also? The premise that this is a Death Row prequel? Oh, just drop it. There is practically no connection between this and that venerable series.
I'm giving this three stars just because Ms. Jaid is involved. It's not as fulfilling as other Ellora's Cave offerings.
