Customer Reviews:
Good, but I liked previous editions ..........2007-01-15
I have an older version of this book. I found this most recent version good because of the color pictures. The CD that comes with it is also a nice edition as it walks you through the principles presented in the book using Flash. However, the older version seems more clear in the area of writing and vocabulary. I'm not sure why you need to change an edition by making it wordier, but that seems to be the case here.
So, overall, it's a good book because of its pictures and CD. If you don't have earlier versions of the book you won't be missing anything so I'd recommend it wholeheartedly. If you do own an earlier copy and want this one as well, try to find it cheaper on another site.
Art Fundamentals.......2006-02-27
This book was exactly what the teacher wanted and it got to me in a timely manner!! Thank you so much.
The Standard Text Now Greatly Improved.......2005-09-14
This new tenth edition of this classic book has been expanded and changed in two significant ways.
First the CD-ROM that comes with the book has been extensively enhanced under the direction of Bonnie Mitchell of Bowling Green State University. The CD-ROM now opens with a menu of five major areas:
Elements and Principles of Art
Art Techniques
Chapter Resources, reviewing each chapter in the book.
Study Skills Primer
Internet Resources (aimed at those new to the web).
The book itself has been brought up to date with a broader array of media and represents more diverse artists than previously. New sections have been added on video art, contemporary photography, and global art. In addition the entire text has been reviewed and changed to increase the readability.
Finally the book has been integrated with the publishers Online Learning Center which has quite a bit of additional material including trial quizzes, flash cards, crossword puzzles (to assist in the vocabulary development), and a link to McGraw-Hills Art Supersite with additional more general information.
This book has long been a standard text in the field. The new edition brings it completely up to date.

Launching the Imagination is available in a comprehensive volume treating 2D design, Creativity and Problem-solving, 3D design, and time-based (4D) design; or in split volumes containing either 2D or 3D design, plus the material on Creativity and Problem-solving.
Launching the Imagination’s
Core Concepts in Art CD-ROM, version 2.0, which engages students interactively with the elements and principles of art through numerous interactive exercises, has been re-organized and expanded. "I have found the text very clear and concise with fabulous, diversified examples and illustrations."
--Kelly M. Nelson, Longwood University
"It is clear, concise, and visually appealing. My students responded immediately to its visual impact. I also appreciated the artist views for each chapter. They gave the sections more meaning."
--Danielle Harmon, Valdosta State University
"This text is excellent for developing projects that stimulate creativity, challenge students set in convergent thinking to open up, realize the ability to be creative when they are not visual artists."
--Carolynne Whitefeather, Utica College
"Main reason [for adopting LTI]: chapters on narrative and time. Helped to bridge the gap between fine arts and graphic design. Helped/introduced students to these elements/topics and reinforced 2D/3D concepts learned in other classes. Students enjoyed the book. Problem solving chapter is great."
--William Britton Rowe, Ohio Northern University
"Launching the Imagination is both simple and in-depth in its scope. It is thorough without being overwhelming. It is clear and succinct without losing the essence of meaning or concepts. Also the color examples and the accompanying CD is great."
--Rob Tarbell, Piedmont Virginia Community College and James Madison University
"I have not had a really good text for 2-D Design since Roy Behrens' Design in the Visual Arts, which is now out of print. While there is much to like about Launching the Imagination, I was most happy with the sections which talked about critical thinking and strategies for problem solving which can be employed by visual artists."
--Reid Wood, Lorain County Community College
"The engaging writing and variety of visual examples make this design text the most user friendly guide for both students and instructor that I've found yet. The artist profiles give an applied art/life perspective that is unique in foundations texts. I've used the text at two colleges and my students LOVE this text. The thin 2D volume is also a plus. Students do Not want a heavy book to lug around."
--Tracy Doreen Dietzel, Edgewood College

Mr. Conservative: Goldwater on Goldwater
ASIN: 0691131171 |
Book Description
In 1960, Barry Goldwater set forth his brief manifesto in The Conscience of a Conservative. Written at the height of the Cold War and in the wake of America's greatest experiment with big government, the New Deal, Goldwater's message was not only remarkable, but radical. He argued for the value and importance of conservative principles--freedom, foremost among them--in contemporary political life. Using the principles he espoused in this concise but powerful book, Goldwater fundamentally altered the political landscape of his day--and ours.
Customer Reviews:
Why the barking moonbat RFK Jr??.......2007-08-29
I was going to add a newer addition to my library, as my earlier edition is pretty worn. I'll find an earlier edition in good condition rather than buy this one. Why the forward by RFK Jr, I'll never know...
Perfect book until the new Afterword by RFK Jr. CC Goldwater what were you thinking?.......2007-08-25
Mr. Conservative explains what the job of the Federal Government was originally intended to do. It was Not created to make Pyramid schemes like Social Security, not for health care, not for Education, not for creating jobs, not for creating bureaucracy after bureaucracy, not giving over our sovereignty to the United Nations etcetera etcetera. I was so satisfied reading this book up until the end. How can CC Goldwater let a Left Wing Hack Job like RFK Jr. write the Afterword? He is for all of the Government intrusion/handing over sovereignty to the U.N. that Barry Goldwater was completely against. And then he puts words in this great man's mouth! The audacity! RFK Jr. only gets a forum to speak because of his father, he is a LOSER!! Using the Afterword Forum to rail against modern day Republicans that he despises is pathetic. Hey RFK JR., I'm still waiting for you to agree to have windmills installed by your place in Nantucket...you private jet flying HYPOCRITE!!
The Essense Revisited.......2007-08-22
This is a great statement of true Conservatism. What was the point of an afterword by a Socialist Loser. That's the only reason I didn't rate this a 5 star. I would buy an earlier edition if I had it to do over again.
All Political Leaders Need to Read This Book.......2007-06-28
Given the horrible state of politics in our nation and federal infringement on state rights and the constitution, now more than ever all leaders especially conservatives need to read this book. And most importantly after reading it, they need to apply it in how they govern and formulate policy.
Excellent.......2007-03-16
A truly enlightened book. Written by a brilliant man. It is sad that it took 16 years for his votes to be counted when Reagan one the 1980 election. A must read for all Conservative and Patriotic intellectuals.

Book Description
America's top chefs present delectable and ecologically sound seafood recipes.
Earth's oceans were once thought to be inexhaustible sources of food, but we now know that they cannot sustain the demands we are placing on them. Overfishing has led to the depletion of once abundant fish and shellfish species. Yet seafood is a healthy and desirable choice in our diets. So what is an ecologically conscious, seafood-loving cook to do?
Carole C. Baldwin and Julie H. Mounts have solved the dilemma. Rather than suggest avoiding consumption of seafood for conservation purposes, they present an array of U.S. seafood species to choose from that are fished or farmed in an ecologically sound manner. Furthermore, they have assembled delicious recipes from America's top chefs based on these species: try Alice Waters's Dungeness Crab Salad with Meyer Lemon, Endive, and Watercress; Mario Batali's Atlantic Mackerel in Scapece with Lemon Thyme and Sweet Peppers; or Sautéed Soft-Shell Crabs on Asparagus from Jacques Pepin.
By diversifying our seafood consumption, we can lessen the demand for problematic species and distribute the burden among a broad spectrum of well-managed stocksand still prepare delicious meals. Beautifully illustrated with 25 color illustrations by Charlotte Knox.

One Fish, Two Fish, Crawfish, Bluefish: The Smithsonian Sustainable Seafood Cookbook.......2006-11-11
Not only is this an outstanding seafood cookbook, it is also an educational document explaining the importance of our oceans and an awareness of ocean conservation. Also, royalties received by the authors from sales of this book will support Smithsonian marine research and education.
Impressive Recipes by Impressive Chefs for Impressive Cause.......2005-04-13
150 Wonderful recipes by some of our very best chefs for the cause of "sustainable seafood"? This is one great cookbook.
Combine this with beautiful color illustrations by Charlotte Knox and this is one to get, use and give.
How about the likes of: Maine Diver Scallops in Chardonnary Sauce; Panfried Soft-Shell Crabs with a Ragout of Spring Vegetables; Lobster with Ginger and Scallions; Winter Squash Bisque with Lobster; Paprika Prawns with Tequila-Lime Mango; Pan Roasted White Sturgeon, Warm Lentil Salad and Pinot Noir Glaze; Salmon Steaks Braised in Grape Juice with Whipped Red Potatoes with Horseradish; Rainbow Trout with Balsamic Syrup and Honey-Citrus Vinagerette; Wood Grilled Louisiana Pompano with Mango Slaw.
You've got the like of an all-star lineup of chefs including Charlie Trooter, Ming Tsai, Rick Bayless, Julia Child, Thomas Keller, Eric Ripert, and many more. This is exceptionally packed well done seafood bonanza that will not let the interested home gourmet down, unless one isn't truly into serious seafood cooking or no access to fresh seafood.
The info on sustainable seafood and sources plus glossary is necessary and most useful contribution.
Good Concept, but Disappointing.......2003-12-31
I love the IDEA of this book -- what seafood is eco-friendly and how to cook it. The book contains numerous short essays about poor fisheries-management and suggestions about less harmful practices, and these are nice. But in terms of practical advice on fish-buying, the authors are trying to avoid all negativity and don't help the reader distinguish truth from fiction at the fish-mongers. And some of the fish varieties discussed can only be distinguished from look-alikes by DNA testing. Also, the recipes are all very fancy and beautiful but way too fussy (how many words does it take to say "salt and pepper"?) Overall, the book is an expensive indulgence (think coffee-table), but not too useful.
Slow Food Cooking prevealent in today's modern restaurants.......2003-11-06
Aside from not having glossy embossed photos to drool over, this book is a wonderful collection of recipes from some of the countries best chefs. What I really love is that the book dives into sustainable aquaculture and what you can do as a consumer to demand better quality local seafood that is not harmful to the environment. Here are 150 recipes that deal with what actually swims in our backyards. It's time we supported restaurants who put such an effort into Slow Food (that is food that is environmentally, physiologically, and mentally the opposite of fast food like McDonalds). I say congratulations to the authors for putting such an effort together.
Good Fish vs. Bad Fish.......2003-10-24
I'm a huge fish fan but find it confusing to know which fish are environmentally safe to eat. My grocers aren't much help and most recipes I find in magazines and books don' t mention whether the seafood ingredients called for are an eco-friendly choice. I was thrilled to find this book for several reasons.
Each chapter is devoted to a certain type of fish such as crab, basses and perch, prawns and shrimp as well as a host of species I had never heard of. Within each chapter is a "how to shop for" guide, cooking methods, and other common names the fish might go by in your local grocery store. Then you've got some great sounding recipes from numerous well-respected chefs. While some of the recipes look a little more complicated than I'm used to, most look easy enough to pull-off at home wihtout buying loads of special ingredients. I like how they throw in a comprehensive glossary to help out with all the cooking terminology. Really, the only downside is the lack of photos. While the illustrations are good, I personally like to see what a finished dish looks like.
The environmental info is easy to read -- not at all preachy (which is refreshing) and the issues section is helpful in understanding what overfishing is all about. I had no idea that up to 100 pounds of by-catch can be discarded for every pound of targeted seafood caught. The authors numbers are really eye-opening.
As far as I can tell, this is the only book on the market that combines the issue of sustainable seafood with actual recipes. Seeing so many great chefs come together for this cause is heartening and I definitely recommend this book for any seafood lover.

A stuffed toy rabbit (with real thread whiskers) comes to life in Margery Williams's timeless tale of the transformative power of love. Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'" This sentimental classic--perfect for any child who's ever thought that maybe, just maybe, his or her toys have feelings--has been charming children since its first publication in 1922. (A great read-aloud for all ages, but children ages 8 and up can read it on their own.)
Book Description
A story that has held a special place in the hearts of children for generations.
Customer Reviews:
A True Classic.......2007-08-30
I just purchased this book for my young neice. The story is beautiful and simple and introduces the concept of loving another thing to children. If you haven't had the chance, read this story; you'll understand why it's been popular for more than half a century.
Great story, flimsy book.......2007-07-17
Velv. Rabbit is one of my favorite children's stories. This book, however, is quite small and flimsy and the illustrations are not very interesting to my child. This would be a great edition for an older child to read to himself (light and easy to hold, certainly inexpensive), but it wasn't great for reading aloud.
One of the books of a lifetime.......2007-05-27
There are reasons that some books, like all things are unforgettable.
This is the wonderful story of a toy rabbit that longs to become real, but must be loved enough. It's a magical fable with beautiful pics, and a touching ending.
Being Real or Being Saved?.......2007-05-14
This book really reminds me of the salvation doctrine of Christianity. You are saved during your lifetime, but it isn't until you die that you actually go to heaven. In the case of the Velveteen Rabbit, he becomes real when he's loved by a boy, but he doesn't actually turn into a living rabbit until he's right on the verge of a fiery demise. I don't know what else to say about the book because its so short, except that its awesome.
Always believe in miracles.
A Taste of Heaven.......2007-05-12
This story could easily be entitled: How things are and how they ought to be. The insights into relationships and friendships are profound and memorable. It is and always will be a classic, and one of my all-time favorite stories.

Helped me get my hunk o junk runnin good!.......2007-03-19
Woo, hoo, what a fun car.
Absolutely Brilliant and Essential.......2006-06-01
This manual came with the 1964 MGB that I bought in Missoula, Montanta (western edge) and promptly drove across the country to Oakton, Virginia. The critics of this manual live on some other planet. This is the original repair manual, I could not live without it, and it is as historic as the MGB to which it pertains.
It can certainly be complemented by other books. The two that I chose and am very pleased with are the Original MGB with MGC and MGB GT V8 by Anders Ditlev Clausager, and the Haynes Restoration Manual MGB (2nd Edition). The first is NOT a restoration manual as it advertises itself to be. It is more like a coffee table book, a showroom "this is what perfect looks like" book. The second, by Lindsay Porter, is a really superior piece of work that brings complex photographic illustrations, detailed descriptions, and context. See my separate reviews of these latter two books. All three are essential.
The value of this book, the original MGB 19962-1980 guide, apart from its substance, is how well is conveys the idea that the MGB, the last and only car I have every been able to understand, was in fact intended as a racing sports car that could be both maintained and restored by its owner.
Save your money!.......2005-08-24
This is not the manual for a DIY restoration. The manual, while a good source for technical specs, is short on actual repair information. The disjointed manner in which it is written is confusing and tiring. For example, disassembly instructions in one section of the book, and reassembly instructions three or four pages away. In many cases critical information is missing or misrepresented, the drawings are often out of context or just incorrect, i.e. a photo of the correct application of a part for one set of model years but no information for following model years with the same part but different location. If you must buy consider also having a Moss Motors Catalog for correct drawings with the name and location of the part.
Haynes MGB book.......2004-09-30
I'm not a big fan of Haynes books but they are better than nothing. The MGB book lived down to my expectations. While there is enough information to get work done, several procedures did not apply to my car even though they are stated to. For instance the pictures and procedures for servicing the cooling systems did not match my vehicle at all.
This has been my experience with other Haynes books as well. I recommend getting them only if there is no alternative such as Chilton or the "factory" manual.
Must have repair manual -.......2002-11-03
Typical Haynes manual -wonderfully detailed "how to do it" A bit of the British terms can be confusing, but the exploded diagrams have saved us time & again. I disagree that this book is just for novices, we have several MG's and a copy always accompanies us in the boot during long trips. If you are looking to put a MG back together - spring for Haynes Restoration Manual by Lindsay Porter. Both will save you hours of headaches!

Book Description
This issue of New Directions for Community Colleges presents practical models and new strategies for creating powerful programs in concurrent enrollment, a rising trend in providing educational opportunities for college coursework to students in high school. The contributors draw from strong statistical data and demonstrate the effectiveness of seamless education with models of successful collaboration in existing programs including the Virginia Plan for Dual Enrollment; the Salt Lake Community College model of curriculum design, faculty development and student success; Ohio's Postsecondary Enrollment Options program; Miami's nationally acclaimed New World School of the Arts; and Columbus State Community College Model for Successful Implementation. Incorporating a comprehensive overview with detailed account of positive legislative actions as well as a valuable sampling of literature in the field, the contributors also explore the core tenets of collaborative education-the view that such education is a continuum; that program course offerings complement the high school curriculum rather than supplant it; and that accessibility, financial support, and academic support services for dual enrollees is crucial. In step-by-step approaches to creating valuable programs, the authors detail all the components necessary for the success and credibility of concurrent enrollment with a focus on the faculty liaisons from appropriate disciplines - along with active involvement of community college department chairpersons, academic deans and chief instructional officers - that provides the framework for an ever-improving concurrent enrollment program. This is the 113th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Community Colleges.

Book Description
In its fourth edition Gilbert's
Living with Art won a first-place award for outstanding design and production at the 1995 New York Book Show. The new sixth edition is even more luxurious and beautiful. Not only a book about art, but also an artfully made book, Gilbert's
Living with Art has earned a reputation for elegance and the highest standards of quality.
Living with Art supports student efforts to develop an appreciation of art by clearly communicating the ways one can approach various forms of expression - offering a comprehensive introduction to the visual arts from several perspectives: themes and purposes of art; the vocabulary of art; individual art media (painting, drawing, camera arts, sculpture, architecture, etc.); and the chronological history of art. The book is rich with illustrations drawn from a wide range of artistic cultures and time periods.
