VERY BAD LANGUAGE.......2007-10-02
I was very disappointed in the language in this book. Within the first 15 pages it had taken God's name in vain and had lots of other curse words. I was ashamed to know schools would have such books available for our children to read. The story line is very good, but had foul language that my children are not exposed to. I was upset to say the least. Unless you are used to bad language and taking God's name in vain, then I would not recommend this book.
Travel Team of the Year.......2007-06-08
Danny Walker has looked forward to his seventh grade season on the travel team, the same grade his father was in when he became a miracle, but he did not make the Vikings because of his height and no his father is starting a rag-tag team of his own. Danny was a very small kid for the age of twelve. He was only fifty-five inches tall and had to launch the ball off his shoulder to even shoot, but he was the best point guard in Middletown because he could pass the ball crisply to anyone who could catch. When it came time for try-outs, though, he didn't make the cut because the Vikings' coach, Mr. Ross, was always in Danny's father's shadow and was trying to get back at him. After Danny's father, Richie Walker, talked to Mr. Ross and saw what a jerk he was about the people who did not make the cut, and so he decided to start his own team of boys that did not make that travel team. When the new team, coached by Richie, started practicing they were horrible and eventually let a girl on he team named Colby Danes and she was the best person for Danny to pass to, but through the season they only won three games and came in at seventh place where they would be playing against the second seed the Middletown Vikings. Before they got that far after the first game that the Warriors won Richie was in a crash accident and was in a hospital bed for the rest of the season unable to coach. In the game against the Vikings the Warriors actually won as Danny made a final shot at the buzzer. This was one of the best books I've read in a while because there is extensive detail and drama in the novel.
In every game the author would go into detail about the score, what the players were thinking, and how they were acting. In their first game against Hanesburo the team was so excited that they might be able to win the game, but when Danny took the last shot he missed and he felt awful afterwards like he let the whole team down. Another game was the Seekonk game, the Warriors first win, and the whole team was ecstatic after the game and they all went to a restaurant and had pizza. Then there was the Warriors vs. Vikings game and I could feel the excitement rising in every quarter when the Warriors pulled through a fourteen-point deficit.
The relationship between Danny and his dad was very interesting to follow through the story. Danny's parents had been divorced for a while, but Danny always looked up to his father who was once one of the greatest basketball players until he had an accident because he was drunk. Also Danny and his dad did not talk very much until Richie decided to start the team and stay around Middletown for a while. Then after Richie is hurt in another accident he places the team in Danny's hands because they had actually learned to trust each other. Also by the end of the book Danny's mother started to warm up to the idea of having Richie around.
Another thing that enjoyed in this story was the variety of characters. There was Ty Ross, whose dad was the Vikings' coach, and he was friends with Danny and in the end Ty ended up joining the Warriors instead of sticking with Vikings. Another person was Will Stoddard who was Danny's best friend and he would not stop talking and he was always trying to be the funniest person in the room. Finally there was Tess and she was always there for Danny no matter what and they hung out a lot together over the entire story.
This book was was full of vibrant detail and explanations during the different games and different characters like the twins, Will, and Colby made for an interesting story. Colby was an interesting character because she was the only girl on the team and was also one of the best players. Over the book Will and Richie gained trust and respect in each other that they would be able to keep for a lifetime. Also the detail of the different games was amazing, for example there was the game against Seekonk.

The Underdogs

"He knew he was small. He just didn't think he was small. Big difference." Danny Walker is 12 years old. The twelve year old main character in Mike Lupica's, Travel Team is short, but he is very talented.
Danny's life is hard. His parents are divorced and he mainly lives with his mom. His dad will come to his house to visit once and a while. In this book, his dad visits, and stays. After not making Mr. Ross's travel basketball team, Danny doesn't give up. Him and his dad have a new great idea. They could make their own team!
The way this worked was they took a few kids that also didn't make Mr. Ross's team. And Danny brainstormed. Maybe he could ask his other friend if they wanted to play for his father's travel team, The "Warriors". Finally they gathered enough kids to start. But they had to practice. When the season's start came around, they joined the same league as Mr. Ross's team. Without his start player Ty Ross, who knows what could happen in this season.
I would recommend this book to kids that are around 10-13 years old and that are interested in sports, and want to read a fun and interesting book. I liked the book because it had a lot of action and it felt as if I were in the book.
AWESOME!.......2007-03-30
This book, after i found it randomly in my school library, soon became my favorite book. I can make many connections with this book to my life. I love how Lupica describes the characters so vividly that i can picture them in my head perfectly. I highly suggest that if you like this book as much as i do, then i reccomend reading Heat, also by Mike Lupica. All in all, this was a great book, so enjoy reading!
Cornwall, New York 6th Grader.......2007-03-07
I am a sixth grader from Cornwall, New York. The book I read was Travel Team by Mike Lupica. Danny Walker is a kid who doesnt make the local travel team called the Middletown Vikings just because of his size. Dannys dad,Richie Walker,he led the vikings to win in the finals. Richie goes on to be a pro but stops because of a brutal car accident causing him to lose his marrige and not able to play anymore.
Dannys dad heard about how danny got cut from the basketball team so his dad made a team of people that didnt make the team. There team name was the Middletown Warriors. The warriors beat the vikings in the playoffs. If you are a sports fan you will love this book. The lesson you learn from this book is that you should never give up and work towards your goals. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports.

A Must Have.......2002-03-28
Very "real world", comprehensive guide to experiencing and leading a short-term mission team. My experience with it came from two trips to Bolivia. The first as a team member, and the second as a team leader. Both times I found it to be an invaluable resource for preparing myself and others as we ventured into a totally foreign culture.
VWAP ... training made easy!!!.......2002-03-27
Easy, we thought. Our church wanted to do a short-term mission trip. We had eager participants, all ready and willing to "go". We just didn't know what to do... or even where to go ... we'd never done this before!! Yikes!! To the rescue ... Vacations with a Purpose!!! The VWAP leaders manual provided insight from people who had lead teams before, practical training ideas and a checklist to get us started.
I recommend this book for those just getting started with short-term missions, as well as to those who want to learn how to do better teams.

Excellent map of the Continent........2007-08-04
Folds out to be about 3 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall, with maps printed on both sides. The large orange box in the middle of the greater-Europe side (which shows the area printed on the opposite side of the map) is a bit annoying, but that seems to be the worst of it. The map's heavier-duty cover is built to not mutilate the paper map inside when folding and unfolding, and the legends are clear and helpful. The largest map goes from the northernmost part of Great Britain to the top of North Africa, and from the outskirts of Moscow, Russia, to the outskirts of Ankara, Turkey. Aside from the orange box, there is nothing obscuring the continent. Scandinavia is chopped off the top of the map and moved into a greater-detailed box out in the Atlantic; I fully agree with this choice and prefer it over other maps I have owned where showing Scandinavia in its correct spot means either a lesser-detailed map, or moving Italy to another side of the map. The detailed side of the map showing central Europe only runs from Dover, UK, to Paris to Avignon, France, and Warsaw, Poland, to Belgrade, Serbia. It shows the rail relationships between these European cities and most stops in-between: Dover, UK; Paris; Turin; Milan; Munich; Brussels; Cologne; Berlin; Vienna; Budapest; Warsaw; and Prague. The detailed map covers the heartland of where most American travelers go in Europe, and shows definitively how to travel to other popular destinations, such as Madrid, Rome, Athens, London, Moscow, and Copenhagen. Either side of the map is great for posting on a wall, and the well-marked scenic rail routes make it easy to plan a train ride. Also simply excellent as a general-purpose map of Europe, and superior in this respect to road maps of the Continent.

Concise, To The Point.......2006-08-31
You'll find all the toipcs in this book in any big reference book on mountaineering. However, adding this book to your library won't do any harm.
The book starts off with a lesson on physical geography. Then, the various techniques on routefinding, team travel and anchors are covered. Unlike many of the bigger books on mountaineering, this book covers the essentials and does not confuse the novice. For instance, the knots and ropework are all pretty simplified. I have tried them out on the field and they all work fine.
My only complaint is that the illustrations look a bit sketchy on some pages.
The Bible of Glacier Travel.......2000-11-20
Crevasses are one of those things that many of us who climb wish we didn't have to deal with. Unfortunately many people go out and climb while totally unprepared. Indeed they choose to not deal with it, and take enormous risks.
In this book Andy will give you the scoop on everything you ever wanted to know related to glacier travel. He starts by explaining what glaciers are, then he gets more into detail on how to routefind, traveling as a group, and of course how to perform crevasse rescue.
My honest opinion is that this book is not, by itself, going to make you an expert on the subject. I really don't think any book can. You need to get some training, be it with an experienced friend or established school but this book will show you all the techniques that you'll learn. Plus if you already know it can help you brush up and possibly show you new techniques. Great book, very typical high quality stuff from The Mountaineers.
A first-hand teacher.......2000-04-18
As someone who is fairly new to mouutainering and glacier travel, I found the wonderfully helpfulmin explaining important technequies, that are crucial to any body finding their adventures leading them to the mountains. I found it extermly helpful when I actually set foot on the ice.

We already knew Joe McGinniss could chill our blood (Fatal Vision) and arouse both our pity and distaste for the Kennedys (The Last Brother), but who knew he could be so funny? (Well, maybe readers who remember The Selling of the President back in 1968.) Even those who have no interest in soccer--the majority of Americans, he ruefully admits--will relish the author's vivid account of a team from Castel di Sangro, a tiny town in Italy's poorest region, that against all expectations made it to the national competition. Whether he's chronicling his ordeal at possibly the least-inviting hotel in Italy (the heat doesn't come on until October, no matter the temperature; he is assigned to a room up four flights of stairs though there are no other guests), or sketching a colorful cast of characters that includes the team's sinister owner and an utterly unflappable translator, McGinniss prompts roars of laughter as he reveals an Italy tourists never see. He also saddens readers with a shocking final scene in which he confronts the nation's casual corruption, which taints men he's come to respect and even love. Although not a conventional memoir, this stirring book reveals as much about the author's passionate character as about the nation and the players who win his heart, then break it. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Castel Di Sangro is a tiny town in the Abruzzo region of Italy, whose soccer team became an international sensation by winning promotion to the highest levels of national competition. For the team from this tiny village to be playing against the teams of Genoa and Venice was more than a dream come true, it was inconceivable. But the truth can be stranger than dreams, as Joe McGinniss discovered when he arrived in Castel Di Sangro. A recent convert to soccer, he wanted to experience life in a town turned upside down by the game. What he found was a cavalcade of euphoria, betrayal, grief, and euphoria again, an entire town living in an emotional frenzy unlike anything since the local battles of World War II. McGinniss lost himself totally to the team, a boisterous collection of characters whom readers will grow to love, and found a story whose depth and power enthralled him. Like Field of Dreams, Hoosiers, and The Secret of Santa Vittoria, this is a masterpiece of storytelling that transcends sports to embrace universal emotions.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2007-10-05
Even though it is written for the football novice and can be facile at times - A WONDERFUL BOOK!
An All-Time Great Sports Book.......2007-05-31
It's fitting that even after hearing about this book because of soccer, I ended up stumbing across it in the travel section. Soccer may be the glue of the book, but it's a travelogue at heart. McGinness starts with his newfound madness for soccer bringing him to Italy, yet quickly lets the game recede into the muddle of everyday life. The writing quickly becomes part Simon Kuper and part Bruce Chatwin. The book thankfully takes in as much lush description and hilarious anecdotes as it does tactical decisions and game descriptions. Instead of just an Italian version of a John Feinstein book, we get a truly unique story that evokes real and lasting emotion rather than the passing interest of locker room voyuerism.
Much of criticism here seems to miss the point. It's true that McGinniss makes himself the main character, but it's not a weakness (some arrogance, maybe, but not mere narcissism). The book, after all, is mainly about the shock of the outsider looking in: on soccer, on the village, on Italian society as a whole, and especially the repulsive compromises between love of the game and its seedier elements. If McGinniss doesn't quite succeed at making some grand assessment of Italy or a master's analysis of soccer, who cares? The story he tells is fascinating, emotive, and tragic nontheless. It reaches far beyond the world of the game and its fans, and should be a must-read for anyone.
The Sopranos and even better in Castel di Sangro.......2007-05-20
During the sixties Joe Mc Ginniss wrote about presidential campaigns and the selling of the president. He made a marvellous and unexpected comeback in 1999 with his The Miracle of Castel di Sangro. You will never regret buying this wonderful book about soccer in an isolated moutain region in Italy. Joe Mc Ginniss spends the season with this astonishing soccer team. In fact he depicts soccer as one of the pillars of communal life in this very peculiar village- like setting. But it is not an innocent setting. Innocence is definitely lost in this part of the continent and Mc Ginniss produces remarkable characters. The owner, Signor Rezza, straight out of the Sopranos, the coach Osvaldo Jaconi, "to argue with him is like throwing pebbles at a bulldozer" and the name of the team's principal sponsor, Soviet Jeans. Multiple plotlines develop in the story. The most exciting one is in the end when Castel di Sangro Calcio ultimately secures its position in the B series. The last needless game there is a smell of corruption when Castel di Sangro Calcio is defeated by 3 to 1 by Bari that thereby gains promotion. This stinking smell of corruption delivers an unhappy ending for Joe Mc Ginniss but the story is wonderful.
Nice story.......2006-08-10
This book was especillay enjoyable to read this summer after Italy's win in the World Cup. Regardless, I found the book a delight to read. If you enjoy Soccer or Italy, you would likely enjoy this book.
Is this worthy of a book?.......2006-07-28
By the time "Grande Joe" steps off the plane in Italy and his book begins, the Miracle of Castel Di Sangro has already taken place. What we are left with is the much less exciting and much more common story of a team playing to avoid relegation. Is it just me or did McGinniss arrive a season too late? There simply isn't any story left. The football commentary and insight are of the armchair variety and even if it wasn't, the football just isn't that good (by the author's own admission).
The strongest material comes from the author's interactions with an Italian culture he doesn't even attempt to assimilate with. So much for "do as the romans do". In many ways Joe is the ugliest of ugly americans even as he insists he isn't. Giving McGinniss the benefit of the doubt, I would say he is encouraging us to laugh at him. Although I was so embarrassed for him when reading about his "polemics" that it was more uncomfortable than funny. It was also sad to see the author burn all his bridges so clumsily at the end.
All the usual travel schtick is on display here, complete with language blunders and crappy hotels. Anyone who has travelled has a million stories like this. Most of the author's aren't particularly exciting, and when they are they smack of embellishment.
Really slick prose, some funny moments, a goofy American in Italy, that's the book. It seems to me that Joe went to Italy looking for drama and didn't find any. After giving up a million dollars to write a book about O.J. Simson (as he is constantly reminding us) I guess he had to justify the 9 months he spent in Italy.

Disabled in a motor vehicle accident at age 19, author Cale Kenney survived one of the most radical female amputations performed. Writing from the perspective of amputee "peer visits," Cale answers the question, "What happened to you?" and exchanges stories at bedsides of those who have lost, or are about to lose a limb. Describing the accident's initially grim impact and her recovery process to individuals facing the trauma of limb loss, the storytelling also heals this veteran amputee.
Throughout "Have Crutch Will Travel," Cale testifies in graphic honesty about confronting deep loss, investigates women's issues of beauty and body image, and illustrates with humor her misadventures on crutches. Whether she is chasing a potbellied pig, "one crutch to walk, one to whack," or losing a crutch in the Atlantic Ocean or the Colorado River, she transforms the silly into the sublime.
Celebrating the mountain experiences she discovered through skiinga spiritual journey to a peak experienceCale's memoir is a testament to the strides made by disabled athletes prior to the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Inspiring readers who may be having doubts in their lives, Cale's descriptive prose quickly mesmerizes her audience and invigorates those without hope, while offering an inviting look into the life of an active, modern day Calamity Jane.

Such a neat book, with great stories about the Cubs on the island and other interesting tidbits about Catalina Island. I could not put it down.

Charlie and even found an awesome pic of him that resembled my dad oh so much!! anyway the whole book was so interesting and great for nostalgic Cubby Fans...so full of history. Makes me want to go back to Catalina and see the old ball field and other points of interest I missed the first time. Kathy Brewer Muenz
Baseball Enthusiast.......2004-05-18
Being a baseball enthusiast most of my life I found The Cubs on Catalina to be a wonderful book. It's filled with many pictures and interesting comments by the old players during the time they trained on the island off of California. When purchasing this book for myself I also bought an additional copy for a family member. We both loved the book and would highly recommend it to any devoted Cub fan, but also to anyone who loves the game of baseball. Living in So California for many years and visiting the Old Wrigley Field many times, I was familiar with some of the players mentioned in the book
Tons of information about the Cubs!.......2003-11-23
The Cubs on Catalina is filled with great pictures of the Chicago Cubs, not to mention the treasure trove of stories the old baseball players tell. I can't find any other book, or even a documentary, where there is so much engaging information about these three exciting decades of the Cubs' history. I recommend this book to all Cub fans.

GREAT, great story!.......2005-10-03
This is a great book that will inspire you to be a stronger, more adventursome person than you might otherwise be. I like the way the author incorporates diary entries from her expedition, and also the text inserts including helpful background information that might otherwise have bogged down the flow of the story. I bought both this (the version for adults or teens) and the companion book, Big Enough Anna, which tells the same story in a manner appropriate for young children. Both are fantastic, and I plan to give copies to friends as gifts. Way to go, Pam Flowers!!!
Hard to put down.......2005-03-03
I needed something to read during the benchmarks, so I ran to the library during passing time and grabbed the first book I could find on mushing (I'm an addicted musher). I had a hard time putting it down. The pictures were wonderful, and the story was great. It was a pretty fast read, I finished it that day, but I enjoyed it. I've reread it twice since I bought my own copy.
I LOVE THE STORIES OF YOUR ADVENTURES!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-01-18
