Stating The Unspoken.......2007-09-23
Everybody knows the abuse-of-power types that this book outlines. Too often companies/cultures put the onus on victims to adapt, and get-along. What that approach does is allow managers to NOT do their jobs - and that is to confront dysfunctional behaviors clearly and directly.
Dr. Sutton takes a no holds barred approach to defining culture up front. Letting the community know what is and is not acceptable behavior. I wish that he would create a study of companies that are this direct in dealing with behavioral problems, bring the concept along further with specifics of what works and what doesn't.
The "avoidance approach" clearly is not a true solution, but as he states in the book if management will not address the organization's asses, and you want to keep your job, it is the best option sometimes.
A few times in my life I've worked in environments where the assholes have kissed upward so much that they are well connected. And poorly skilled career bureaucrats looking to keep their position, single these emotionally inept people out as stars to be heralded - because heralding a well connected asshole makes you an ally. In each of those situations, I've watched the best people move on, managerial incompetence thrive, motivation deteriorate, and a fairyland scenario of pretending flourish. What a sad state of affairs that leads to.
Bringing the difficult concept of an actual asshole present in the mix, naming what is unspoken, is an essential element in this work. Further development of the idea, refinement of behavioral understanding could only continue to develop greater awareness of truly sly assholes that are skilled to be non-confrontational to those above them and non-approachable to those below.
A meeting with such people present vs. absent is like day and night. Personally experiencing this, I saw groups transformed from demotivated-lackluster-lifeless chair slugs to excited-active-contributors. Such culturally (negatively) controlling individuals cost an organization far more than can ever be measured.
The book is worth the read if only for the stories. But, the principles, the validation, are the real meat and potatoes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and if you can't gift it directly, then throw a few copies into envelopes and drop them in your managements' mailboxes. It's about time the pretending to be nice facade gives way to true comprehension of what civility is, and the complete disregard for it will not be tolerated.

Accurate Potrayal of Many Work Environments.......2007-07-22
I commend Bob Sutton for publishing this book. It is apparent many jobs expect you to tolerate a coworker or superior whose behavior is off the chart yet protected and sometimes endorsed by management. The cost to a business is high and Bob did a great job of quantifying it. I highly recommend this book if you work in a toxic environment. Bob outlines some great strategies for succeeding in such an environment and discusses how to create policies to prevent one person's inflated ego from sinking the ship.

Each one of these books absorbed my attention like no other book has ever done in my life. Yes, it was an easy read. I have read the whole series and never spent more than a few hours reading it. Still, the plot made it irresistable. That being said, the "Left Behind" promoters have left no stone unturned and parlayed this into an industry unto itself, like "40 Days of Purpose" or TBN - buy the audio tapes, buy the tee shirts, join the club - and, hey, don't forget to buy a nice Christian coffee mug and bumper sticker while you're at it! My husband calls all the little extras "Christian crap"-- and I tend to agree.
If you want a good, fast-paced, easy-to-read story, with some theology thrown in to boot, read the book, enjoy it, and bypass the cofee mugs and tee shirts! If you just HAVE to spend money, send a donation to the Gideons so they can put a Bible in someone's hands, or send it to Operation Christmas Child or some other worthy cause :)

If you are already a fan of Ann Rule, "No Regrets" will not disappoint! The book contains several stories of true crime written in Ann's typical style. It's hard to put down the book until you find out what really happened and "whodunit". I love how Ann digs deeply into the past lives of the people in the stories, and how she puts all the pieces together. It's like a literary puzzle which solves itself as you read on. I've been a huge fan of Ann Rule, former Seattle police woman-turned true crime author, for many years and I've already pre-ordered her next book from Amazon which is due out in November 2007.

This book has so much creative inspiration in it! I did traditional quilting for 8 years and while I still love it there was something in me that would long to do something with all those fabrics that had printed animals and trees and bright flowers on them. Something non traditional. This book along with "Beautifully Embellished Lanscapes" by Joyce R Becker made my creative muse completely take off! Even if you don't like fish the techniques and inspirations in this book are sure to inspire you to make something that does capture your fancy. Sometimes there is something about seeing what other people have done that makes the wheels starting turning in your mind and helps you to come up with your methods. If you are even considering this book I would recommend you buy it and give it a try.
For Glue and FISH LOVERS.......2006-03-11
The title of this book is very misleading. First and foremost the ONLY technique recommended (or explored) by the author is cutting and GLUING fabric (yes, "GLUE"). The technique is developed from a combination of foundation and applique quilt methods; hence, the 'free-style' method, is to substitute glue for any and all other peicing methods. In addition, "No Rules" is not a 'play-on-words'; her techniques require extensive drafting/drawing, piece numbering etc. . Therefore, exact guides, measured 'seam allowances' (glue overlap allowances) etc., are imperative to her method.
Ms. Carlson is a huge fish lover. I, unfortunately, am not. 95% of the examples and 100% of the 'exercises' are of FISH. I had hoped for a wider range of subject matter; or that the book description had included this very relevant fact.
All of this being said, the book is very well organized, with lots of color photographs, well written, and true 'hands-on' step by step approach to the author's method.
However, unless you want to glue fabric and depict a lot of fish, I would recommend giving this title a pass.
Opens Up a Whole New World of Quilting Possibilities.......2005-04-14
I'm very new to quilting...having just completed my first quilt and I was looking for what to do next when I spotted Susan Carlson's Free-Style Quilts A "No Rules" Approach. The idea behind this book (and the title) intrigued me. The artist's work, and those of her students are very inspiring. I couldn't wait to start, so armed with the book I went to my local fabric store (okay truthfully I went to all the stores that carry fabric in a 30 mile radius). It changed the way I look at textiles. Picking out fabric, always so much fun now has a new dimension to it. Fabric I might have overlooked in the past holds so much promise/potential. Now I look at the patterns or textures thinking, could this become a fin? Oh, this would be perfect for a butterfly's wing! It's like creating a painting with fabric. Her free-style approach is very freeing. You can use an enlarged photocopy of the picture as a template to cut, but that's more of a springboard. Thanks Susan, I'm hooked. I've posted a picture of my first free-style project (it's still in progress). My mind is brimming with ideas from photos I took in Hawai'i, from flower shows, maybe this summer I'll even attempt a portrait!

I'm shaking. Literally! I have books for Africa on quilting and not one of them has made such an impression as this book. Susan Carlson is simply an artistic genius. Her quilts are nothing short of amazing, the beauty and the realism surpasses belief! Her techniques are simple, clearly explained and shared with enthusiastic joy. I started my own fan-fish, before I'd even finished the book! You're an inspiration Susan, thank you for such a marvelous, delicious book-it's certainly wet my artistic appetite and if I didn't live so far away (New Zealand), I'd be signed up for your next class!

This book by Susan Carlson was THE first book that captured my attention, involving a different approach to quilting. I picked up her book at my local library, but I have since purchased my own copy. The traditional quilt patterns have been copied and rehashed so many times, and because they are now being mass produced and sold in department stores--I feel that traditional quilting has suffered somewhat. I was looking for something that I could create that was different and more individual. I like this book because Susan has been very generous in the information that she shares, and although many quilting books claim to do the same, many fall short of the mark. (If you will read the reviews of other "notable" quilting books-you will see what I mean.) Anyone who is looking for a new approach-buy this book and you will not be disappointed at all. The other books that I could recommend, would be the Gee's Bend books, and Piecing: Expanding the Basics by Ruth B. McDowell.

This more I think about this book, the more thought provoking it becomes. First, I find it amazing that anyone could take a belief that's widely known (practically a cliche), add nothing of substance to it, and actually write a book about it. Second, I find it even more amazing that it took 134 pages to make the Golden Rule applicable to business. Third, and perhaps the most amazing of all, is the fact that I actually spent my own hard earned money on this book. What amazing insights did I think would be uncovered?
I'll save you $9.72 (+s/h) and the 45 minutes it'll take you to read this. Here goes... Unless you were raised by wolves, it's pretty likely you've heard of the Golden Rule. Ok, now think about how this rule can be applied to all of your business dealings. That's it - you got it!
Whew! Now that you have an extra $9.72 in your pocket and 45 minutes of free time, go practice that Golden Rule by treating your kids/grandkids/neighbors to some ice cream.

In a recent newspaper, in one day ... Enron chief pleads not guilty, Adelphia execs found guilty, no retrial in stock scandal ... and this was just the front page of the business section. On that same page, I noted the use of the phrase, "ethically amoral." Have we finally reached a point where we can construct such phrases? Corruption, moral relativism, the meaning of "is," have you had enough?
If you are looking for some insights into the problem and perhaps an alternative approach, here's your book, There's No Such Thing as "Business" Ethics. Maxwell writes, "...There's only ethics." Maxwell is right, and through interesting stories and common sense he argues for the adoption of the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
I read this book in hopes to validate my own research for my book, Swapping Lies! I felt that perhaps my call for a return of honor to the workplace was a bit too much, too naive. I was surprised to read that I am not the only one who feels this way. Maxwell is calling for the Golden Rule! Many will consider the Golden Rule a bit naïve in today's world, yet it is principle that successfully guides us in our business endeavors. A principled and focused leader is not naïve. In fact they are a constant source of strength and confidence to all. Spend just an hour to read this book. It may change you and your company.

This is a motivating, short, and easy to read book that tries to persuade the reader to adopt and apply the Golden Rule to their life as the ethical standard. Although the title of this book could mislead and create the wrong impression that it is intended to be read by businesspersons, this book can be used by anyone, since the general purpose is to apply the Golden Rule not only to the business environment but also to the personal life of the readers.
The book will generate great results and deep impact in the life of those persons, whom regardless of their social status or occupation, find themselves lost or disoriented regarding to their ethics standards. Throughout examples and real life stories in several aspects, the author illustrates his points and creates consciousness among the readers. At the end of each of the seven chapters, readers will find four to six straightforward questions that will help them look inside themselves and reflect what they have just read.
The author starts the book by citing ethical issues that have been creating concern in our society. Afterward, he focuses in the benefits and the importance of the Golden Rule. Subsequently, readers will find valuable tips of how to start thinking and applying this concept, which give introduction to other concept known as character. In chapter 5, the book encloses five factors that are considered to be the deceivers for people to follow an appropriate ethic path. Later, in the following chapter, the Dr. John C. Maxwell persuades readers to follow eight of his suggestions of how people can develop strong character in order to pursue golden opportunities. The Golden Rule works, This Book Falls Short.......2004-03-02
The application of the Golden Rule to our everyday lives is something that we can all agree is good. John Maxwell does a good job or defining the golden rule, its worldwide acceptance, and how we can apply it to our everyday. It was more like a walk down memory lane; to a time when a teacher or mentor first explained the concept to us. However I do have a few concerns with Mr. Maxwell's book. First there might need to be a better job at researching Fletcher thoughts on Relativism...in his book he labels Fletcher as the father of mordern day Realativism...quoting (or rather misquoting) Fletcher's statement that love can justify anything. I am in not postition to defend Fletcher, for I am not that familiar with his work, however he does not just use the term love. Rather he uses the term Agape Love, coming from the ancient Greek...the highest and purest form of love...one that God would have for us, a term any minister or pastor of the Christian Faith would know very well. Second after page 86 the book get repediative and seems to get off track. This links to my last issue with the book and why it gets a bit off track, as it turns into an advertisement for Mr. Maxwell's corporation, the last several pages are nothing but adverstisements asking you to visit their web site for free character quiz and then taking you down a road of Buy...buy...buy our products. Not what I expected and was somewhat disappointed. In short taking some know concepts, putting a somewhat of a new spin on them and then publishing to add another book to the list of those authored. Part of the disappointment is that I know this book could be better.

I am a martial arts instructor who is wanting to incorporate some basic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into my curriculum for self-defense purposes. After reading all of the glowing reviews about this book and DVD being "straight and to the point" and how Simco just shows the street-effective techniques I thought this would be the right resource to utilize.
I was wrong.
I am very disappointed in the skimpy material in this book, all of which is designed for use by a very strong fighter in an MMA competition, not a normal sized individual on the street. Also, the DVD is nothing more than an advertisement for his other DVD sets. Seriously, there are only 3 techniques on the DVD (about 10 minutes worth) and the rest is previews without instruction for his other products.
The techniques he does show are good if you are an MMA fighter, though there are not a lot of them. If you are looking for a self-defense book, I suggest buying something else.

This is THE book for self defense and street fighting basics. Simco tells it like it is, focusing on techniques that work not "religion and theory". Simco has a gift for explaining the techniques he uses in an easy to follow manner. I'm looking forward to purchasing more material from this author.
Complete but not extraordinary.......2006-08-24
It's a good book. It gives coverage to basic and practical techniques. For the motivated beginner, it will give as much information they can hope to obtain outside of sparing and practice. I think the DVD could have been more informative and less a sales vehicle for a set of DVDs by the author. I couldn't give this product 5 stars, because I had hoped to see more photos with descriptive narrative on the reason for changing levels and what counters to avoid if one attempts any technique. But these shortcoming are overcome by prctical advice throughout.

Overall, this book is exactly what it says it is and shows the techniques of Brazilian Jujitsu that are best used in MMA and Self Defense.
There are the normal forwards and introductions that set the stage for the reader. The Forward done by a military special operations MSG who endorses the use of BJJ in general for hand to hand combat (most military personel have adopted the practice of BJJ) and talks a bit about how they use Simco's products.
Simco then gives an introduction as to how to use the book and his philosophy of training and organization, explaining that its basically better to learn 20 moves at 100% than 100 at 20%. He explains the overall philosophy of Jiu-jitsu and how this is a book of how BJJ techniques fit into a Street or MMA situation, not a book about how to change BJJ into something its not. He stays pretty true to BJJ throughout the book and doesn't add anything that isn't Jujitsu for the sake of making it more `street', instead shows how Jujitsu can solve all the Self Defense problems the reader might have. He explains how the practice of MMA is great for self defense because it is the closest you can get to reality without hurting your partner or yourself. His philosophy of training in general is to be better than the opponent both technically and morally otherwise, "we are no better than those who attack us". `Jiu-jitsu' does mean `Gentle Art'.
Before he gets into the techniques, he gives a history, which was pretty interesting, then follows with the philosophy of positions and the scientific side of physical attributes.
The Techniques:
Before he gets into anything technique-wise, he does something I appreciated as a martial artist by explaining the differences between a real fight and mixed martial arts competition. There are differences and Simco both identifies and acknowledges them.
Unlike many other books, Simco's are very well organized by position and within position, sequencing the techniques so that they link together. This makes them easy to learn, easy to reference and better yet, it makes them work.
He starts from the standing position and talks a bit about striking and how to learn the basics of it so that you understand exactly what is being thrown at you.
He then discusses how to achieve the clinch position in a street fight and some self defense tips. The pictures are clear and go over the details of several takedowns for street and MMA step by step with pretty good instructions. He shows a few variations of moves and the differences of how they might be applied differently with clothing and in MMA with shorts, like the "biana" takedown (basically the brazilian double leg), which he shows a couple of times, addressing how to do it with a penetration step (taking a knee), then without for a hard surface, then a variation, making use of the pants.
The book follows a step by step photo and description approach through all the BJJ positions for the bulk of the book, covering guard passing, the use of the guard, top attacks and escapes, and back mount attacks. All pretty much linked together.
The other nice reference feature is that small thumbnail pictures are displayed down the left side of each page so that after reading the book through (once you've go the basic idea) you can flip through and get a quick refresher or visually find the technique you are looking for. This is especially great for the beginner who isn't familiar with all the jargon and terminology, its easier to look at the picture of what you want to work on.
The last part explains briefly a bit more about simplifying BJJ techniques for self defense even further in his Self Defense Made Easy dvds and works as an introduction to the DVD that comes with the book. After reading the book and checking out the dvd, I purchased the full No Rules set, which was even better than the book and more expansive being that it is a four dvd package. I also purchased the Self Defense dvds and found it to be a useful guide to what I should show my wife whom I want to know some self defense but won't come to class.
For the Beginner, this book adjusts the basics and shows how they can be performed in a non-sportive fight.
For a Martial Artist from another style who wants to add BJJ without going through the belt ranks again, this book is probably the best out there. It's just what you need to know without all the filler and fluff.
For the Intermediate BJJ student, this book will show you how to adjust positions for better self defense or act as a great reference guide if you are training for mixed martial arts competition.
Don't Be Caught Off 'Guard' Without It!.......2005-09-21
Much has already been said about this book, so I'll keep it simple and add my $.02.
Many people practicing BJJ these days do so only for sport and some think that they know what it takes to defend themselves. Maybe they can against someone with no skills, but not against a trained fighter. This book is very with the times as it fills in the gap for people who train mostly with the gi and would like to know how to adjust their moves for a no rules or less rules situation. For someone who isn't interested in 'pajama-grappling' as I like to call it, this book teaches you the BJJ that you really need to know without all the silly flexible monkey moves that'll probably get you killed anyway. The DVD that came with it makes it a real bargain too!

Honestly, this book made me realize there are others like me that can't stop thinking about boats and the ocean! It feeds the fire burning in your soul and loads you up with all kinds of facts, concepts, and the author's experience to send you off to the drawing board, the boat show, or maybe West Marine. Great writing and a flow of information that will make you not want to let it down until you've committed to memory. While you're at it, get "Elements of Boat Strength" also. Highly recommended!

Great book for all the same reasons listed by all the other reviews. However I have one to add. At a party, try reading the section titles out loud in a somewhat suggestive tone. It will astound you how almost every single section title can be read literally or perverted. Whether or not the author meant this to be the case he accomplished it quite well as there are many- many sections.
Are you nautically obsessed?.......2002-11-04
Subtitled Insights and Esoterica for the Nautically Obsessed, this book is a direct hit on its intended audience. Read it once through quickly, then enjoy it over and over again like a favorite song, and you will learn an amazing amount about every sort of boat an individual is likely to own or dream about. Gerr covers design and construction, sails and motors, and boats from homemade paddleboat to liveaboard oceangoing cruiser either motor and/or sail, and everything in between. He covers more about boats than you could imagine he would, and writes wonderfully.
It is difficult to say in a few words how useful, or how enjoyable, this book is. I love it.

Love the book. It is full of "Rules of Thumb" that can save tons of time when trying to design a boat or solve a problem. The techniques shown are great for practical application. The author has an uncanny ability to teach complex subjects in a down to earth easy to understand manner. Highly recommended for boatman, yacht designers, marine engineers and naval architects.
Fun Reading for Boat Nuts.......2002-01-31
While not as technical (unfortunately) as the author's The Elements of Boat Strength it does contain a wealth of information for the curious. The book is a collection of magazine articles but Mr. Gerr must have done a lot of editing-they flow together nicely. Quite readable.

SAME OLD CONFORMITY.......2007-07-16
I got this as a gift. Lindberg wants it both ways. He gets to live in an affluent suburb while railing against it. And telling us that "gee, these republicans aren't so bad". Being punk has nothing to do with the music. It's a philosophy. His idea of punk rock parenting consists of slam dancing around the house with his kid's to the ramones. Very progressive. I also find his parenting skills dubious if the descriptins of his kids are true. I've got two kids and have never experienced the kind of tantrums and bad behavior his girls exhibit. They don't seem very pleasant. I have no intention of putting my kid's through the same suffocating conformity factories that I attended. Lindberg is lucky he has a wealthy wife who can indulge him in his immaturity. The rest of us aren't that lucky. Nor do I want to be. Being in a punk band and trying to show how cool you are by dropping the names of million bands does'nt make you punk.It is about the choices we make. And Lindberg makes the same status quo affirming ones. Nothing progressive here. I suggest Guerrilla Learning by Grace Llewellyn for new ideas on parenting.
Funny and very honest.......2007-06-09
I bought this book about a month ago, and read it in no time. It was the funniest, most honest book about parenting, growing up (or not wanting to), life in general, etc...i've read in a long time, and also very touching.
From mosh pits, to bottles, breast pumps, diapers, mini van, and Warped tour and PTA meetings...It's got something for everyone.
Jim Lindberg is very good at describing situations, and you can picture him going through all the drama, ups and downs of life and yet feel the inconditional love he has for his family.
All the incertainty of being a So-Cal Punk Rock guy, staying true to your beliefs, while raising 3 daughters...it's all in there.
I hope he writes another book, i truly enjoyed his writing.
A funny read.......2007-06-04
This is a great book for us 30 or 40-somethings who secretly (or not so secretly) rage against fitting into the PTA/suburbia parenting mold but still end up there by accident and happenstance. If you wonder some days what happened to your mohawk and "screw the establishment" values as you scramble around like an idiot looking for your 7-year-olds fluffy, pink hair bows, you will totally get this book. Laugh out loud funny and honest, I would recommend this book to any punker, ex-punker or closet rebel.

A hilarious read full of much truth but lacking specific ..........2001-03-09
directions. Kennedy offers many platitudes regarding most of societies accepted notions about work and success. And generally I agree with the vast majority of his assertions which very adequately debunk the traditional thinking. But I found the book to be most useful (at least to me) in terms of validating many of my own beliefs rather than describing the manner in which to accomplish certain goals. For example, Mr. Kennedy basically states that we just need to take action. I certainly concur insofar as action always beats inaction but then there is no supporting instruction on how to take action. And unfortunately many people have no concept of just how to take action.
Even though Mr. Kennedy offers many great examples of particular actions taken by many self starters I feel that many readers would not be able to apply the general concepts to their own lives or endeavors. For example, I might have suggested that the text include the suggestion to evaluate all of the various actions that could possibly be taken regardless of how simple or improbable they may seem. After having a good list of possible actions then it would be advisable to select the best 3 based upon important criteria which might include level of effort, cost, time required and likelihood to succeed to name only a few. From those three it would then be advisable to proceed with the best one. In my mind that is understandable and practical. It is unrealistic to expect that people who have no history or experience with taking initiative or being entrepreneurial will have any clue about what truly taking action means.
Having said that... the book is truly an inspiration and certainly served to get my juices flowing again. Not to mention the fact that it is an easy and extremely enjoyable read. The story about the guy with the Ivan Boesky connection practically had me fallen out of my chair laughin'.
In short I love Mr. Kennedy's style, agree with his beliefs and his suggested actions but I feel the book is deficient in specific instruction. But I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to take charge of their career and more importantly their life.
WAKE UP AND SMELL REALITY.......2000-07-25
Finally, someone has come and exploded all of those tried and true myths of success. A customer is always right, right? NOT! Just think positive and all good things will come to you. What other good jokes do you know?
In this hilarious book Dan Kennedy forces you to come to grips with reality and examine those micky mouse rules of success that have been ingrained in our minds. He shows the absurdity of them and encourages us to seek alternative avenues of self-fulfillment if we're going to make it in the business world. Nice guys finish last so smarten up.
No Rules is funny, insane and will offend those purists of positive thinking and other ideas of fair play. Come on folk, we live in a cut throat, competitive culture which calls for drastic measures. Get with the program is Dan's battle cry and wake up.
Despite the fact that Dan debunks the rules, he creates his own which are just as bad. He gives you the feeling that honesty is out and that being crude, rude and plain obnoxious is the way to success. Like everything else you must proceed with caution in swallowing his lines. The positive thing that must be said of this book is that it teaches us not to take things at face value. All ideas are open to critique and yes rules need to be broken in order to progress. First off I'd like to say that Dan Kennedy is not for everyone nor does he want to be. Some of what he says goes against what is taught in business as well as what is dictated to us from technology. He puts things bluntly, truthfully and as basic as can be. His books are not for whiners, babies or wimps. With that aside I give this rave reviews. He rights with a statement then example over and over again to write a very good book.
recycled thinking of the classics.......2000-04-23
The message? "Challenge it all" and "don't be intimidated by authority". How? Contradict it all. Shake it up. Dan Kennedy's medium? Use a curiosity generating book title (No rules!) that threatens to debunk and make a mockery of established success formulas, then repeatedly quote from the classics anyway ... but put a spin on the interpretation (...this is what Peal really meant, p4). That seems to be Dan Kennedy's formula. Well done. My advice, however...stick with the classics - Napolean Hill, Clement Stone and Maxwell Maltz. Dan's book simply recycles the classics as it suits him, self promotes his other book and relies on annectdotal evidence (some of it incorrect, eg.p13- Darren Bennett was not an Australian Soccer Player!) Frustrating are the contradictions for which Dan apologizes in the introduction. Dan Kennedy writes in an entertaining, provocative manner. But in the end, it is a "me too" a generic with modern examples but adding little original thinking. If you are serious, get the full story, get the classics.

I'm a primary care physician in Seattle and I have treated hundreds of patients with obesity and obesity-related conditions (primarily metabolic syndrome, type two diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia). I have found fantastic success with low-carb diets for all of the above and in the past have recommended Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power, Sugar Busters, Neandrathin, you name it.....however I find that Dr. Gavin's book is extremely SHORT, EASY TO READ, AND MOST OF ALL, EXTREMELY SUSTAINABLE AS A LONG-TERM SOLUTION.
I really appreciate his book and recommend it highly. For some patients with extreme insulin resistance an even lower-carb approach is necessary, but for most people I think is advice is PERFECT.

Simple is better.......2005-08-24
I like simple plans. Vince Lombardy said football is only blocking and tackling, and not much else. Keep it simple. This book is the same: you need to eat three solid meals a day, with protein at each meal, and stop eating at night, especially carbohydrates. That is a simple plan, and I don't have to carry around a notepad all day to write down what I ate. I love the fact that you can read this book in one sitting. You can begin immediately. It is not one of those "write down your habits for two weeks..." kind of books, that noone in modern America has time for. I also liked the fact that this book is Atkins-like, but also very scientific, and he does say you need exercise. I also like the fact that he doesn't "damn" all alcohol, and gives you the option of whether you want to drink or not. I highly recommend this diet plan.

I travel on business regularly and this is a healthy eating plan with principles and guidelines I can use anywhere.
Dr. Gavin is my cardiologist and I saw this book in his office and decided to check it out. I've tried lots of approaches to changing my eating habits to improve my health and reduce my weight and this is a plan that is simple and easy. I just have to use what I already know about food and nutrition to choose foods I like that follow the simple principles in the book. After only a couple of weeks I am feeling better than I have in a long time.

Sound principles for Weight Loss.......2004-10-05
Dr. Gavin's principles for weight loss are sound and effective. As a previous reviewer stated, yes, Dr. Gavin eats nonfat plain yogurt and string cheese for lunch everyday. Additionally, his recommended diet is healthy. If you research the National Weight Control Registry or simply read Anne Fletcher's Thin for Life, you will discover that weight maintainers know exactly what they are eating. You must control the food, not let the food control you. Weight loss takes works and commitment. You cannot always eat what you want and be slim and healthy. I, myself, eat like this:
Weight Loss
Breakfast - 2 slices of peanut butter toast
Lunch - a lean meat sandwich and 1/2 cup low-fat chili or 8 oz. fruit
Dinner - 1 cup nonfat yogurt
Maintenance
The above plus a Zone or Balance Bar and one glass of red wine per day.
I weight train 3 - 4X week and run 5-6 times a week. I'm 5'4", and even with all of this exercise, I cannot eat much. The truth is, unless you have an abnormally high metabolism, are a hardcore bodybuilder, or do heavy manual labor daily, you probably don't need as many calories as you have been told. Nutrition is a complicated science, full of theories and unproved ideas. You have to find what works. One thing for sure, the USDA Pyramid is a fattening feedlot pyramid.
