as fresh as a palm tree in spring.......2006-01-08
This is a great collection of books, light, fresh and funny enough, and the writing is cheerful and simple. 5 stars is not enough, plus, it feeds the love for one's country and values.
The world's most non-stop pleasant novel series.......2005-10-23
Need to calm down, cheer up, chill out or get happy? You can't go wrong with any of the books in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. They are reliably interesting, likable and uplifting. These are the stories of Precious Ramotswe, a substantial lady of extreme common sense and compassion who makes other people's problems are her own. I highly recommend these books; can't imagine anybody who wouldn't like them!
An Outstanding Series!.......2005-08-30
Anyone wanting to read a fascinating book about life in Africa with "homespun" wisdom that is extremely relaxing and enjoyable to read will love this series about Precious Ramotswe and her life in Botswana. She is a delightful character, experiencing life's sorrows, troubles, and joys while maintaining a deep reverence and gratitude for life. After reading this set, I could hardly wait to read the next three - "The Kalahari Typing School for Men," "The Full Cupboard of Life," and "In The Company of Cheerful Ladies." I now can only hope that Alexander McCall Smith will write more books in this delightful series!

Fantastic Object.......2007-06-11
As a die hard lover of Mark Ryden's work, this is truly a gem. While it is tiny, and thusly the images are tiny, it is a wonderful object to have. It does contain many high quality images of Mark rydens most iconic blood covered children, which are amazingly beautiful and moving. It is also bound in red leather. Not only does it contain Mark Ryden's art, it becomes an art objects in and of itself. Lovely!
Book Description
At first there was no reason to link the killings. The first one, months earlier, seemed totally random: a lump of concrete pushed off an overpass onto a passing car. By contrast, the gruesome bludgeoning death of Amber Marshalson, returning home late from a night out clubbing with friends, was obviously calculated. The killer had been seen waiting for the girl in a nearby wood. But when Chief Inspector Wexford discovers that Amber had been the driver right behind the crushed car—and that she’d been driving a silver Honda, while the car in front of her was a gray Honda—he knows that someone wanted the teenager dead badly enough to kill twice to get the job done. And as it turns out, this murderer’s plans are only just getting underway. Can Wexford unravel the complex knots that connect these murders in time to save future victims? Or is he, as he begins to fear, losing his touch and fast becoming a relic of another time?
Long beloved by readers for her deft weaving of wonderfully meticulous characterization, dark humor, and trenchant social commentary into gripping and fast-paced plots, Ruth Rendell is in top form with End in Tears. Taking off from the first page with back-to-back murders and ending with one of Wexford’s own officers in mortal danger, End in Tears touches on issues of class, race, parenthood, aging, and gender roles as it brings the traditional British whodunit into the twenty-first century.
Also available as a Random House AudioBook, Large Print edition, and eBook
Customer Reviews:
A disappointing installment.......2007-10-05
The Wexford novels really seem to have gone downhill over the past few years. This one has a perfunctory feel to it: the nonrecurring characters are thinly drawn and the resolution to the mystery is less than satisfying. I wanted more Wexford and less supporting characters.
Uninspiring and unimaginative.......2007-09-19
Maybe I've read too many mysteries and I'm simply jaded about the genre. But although I generally love Ruth Rendell/ Barbara Vine's novels, I just couldn't get excited about End In Tears.
Inspector Wexford, who we've seen a few times before, is called in to investigate the murder of a young girl and single mother whose body is found near her home. Soon, another young woman, of a different economic background, is found murdered. They're obviously connected, but how?
I thought it was quite ridiculous that nobody thought to suspect the girls' immediate relatives. Wexford and his team could have saved themselves a lot of trouble. Also, I thought the story lines involving the inspectors' personal lines detracted from the main plot itself. Also, I wasn't fond of the way that certain groups were generalized about: alternately, her characters were racist, ageist, and sexist. Its clear that Rendell has no idea how people under the age of, say, sixty think or act. This was a very derivative novel with an ending that made you think, "Huh? Where did that come from?" I think that if a murder mystery is really going to grab you, there should be something new and original in it. In this case, there was no such thing.
Women wanting children.......2007-09-11
The plot is interesting overall, dealing with a contemporary issue, but the murder cases being investigated by Wexford are intermixed with his home life and relationships within the office. The case is complex, maybe too much so. Various people are drawn in as accessories and end up in trouble with the police, and not everyone tells the whole truth when questioned. The problem is establishing a motive for the murders. The novel finally winds down to that in the last pages, put then the motive seems to appear with a wave of the hand, i.e., it was not clear how Wexford arrived at his conclusion. Did someone rat someone out, or what? People are arrested, but the final wrap-up seemed a bit hurried after all the long drawn out investigation. Also, having a police officer get into trouble, and then police dashing to the rescue, seems a little off; and the villains seem not overly bright as they could have just shown the police the door.
Less Than Great.......2007-08-26
Not one of Rendell's best.
Certain twists I saw coming a mile away.
I also found the Hannah's subplot rather poorly written. Rendell usually has such a keen understanding of people, but the writing from Hannah's point of view seemed oddly stilted and forced. She's a stereotype, and not a very interesting one.
The Title Says It All.......2007-08-08
With my "I love Ruth Rendell" credentials intact, I have to say this one was a real disappointment. Wexford's charm didn't wane, but the plot was a far cry from her usual intricate puzzles. One of the great things about Rendell as a writer is that all the convoluted pieces fall into place and the reader is left with that satisfying "Ah!!" In order for that experience to happen, it has to make sense. This one didn't...
Hope the Water is Lovely is better!

Book Description
Beckon the sea,
I'll come to thee....
Shed seven tears,
perchance seven years....
At the age of ten, Gwen Cooke had a strange encounter with a boy with dark, slightly tilted eyes. He came to her on the beach, whispered strange words in her ear, and then disappeared. Shortly thereafter, her family moved away from their seaside home and Gwen never saw the boy again.
Now seventeen, Gwen is returning to her childhood home. Her nana asked her to come. But Gwen knows it's time to go back for another reason: She yearns for the sea. Perhaps the sea itself is calling to her. Perhaps the memory of the boy and his haunting words are drawing her back to the place they met. Perhaps it's time for her to face her destiny.

Wonderful Book.......2007-07-11
I just finished Seven Tears Into The Sea and had to let others know how wonderful this novel is. It is an enchanting story that has left me wanting a sequel. It can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. If you want to lose yourself in a book about the ocean, magic and love, this is worth reading.
One of the best books i have EVER read! .......2007-06-06
This was a really, really, really good book! i am a lover of horse books, so i usually dont read a book unless it has something to do with horses, but when i first saw the cover of this wonderful book, i knew it had something special about it. but if you're a fan of Terri Farley's PHANTOM STALLION books, you may/may not like this book. if you are a die-hard lover of books about horses, you probably wont like this book since it has NOTHING to do with horses at all. but if you like a bit of fantasy, romance and myth, you'll just love this book. Both ways, you should really get it. The reason i gave it four out of five stars, though, is becouse it is a bit predictable, like other people said. but you probably wont guess the beautiful ending, though. All in all, it's a great book and you should read it.
Lovely.......2007-02-05
I've never read the 'Phantom Stallions' series, but after reading this, I *definitely* think Farley should end it and start writing more things like *this*. Seven Tears was a lovely description of what happens when reality coincides with myth, and I found it to be much more than just an 'enjoyable read'.
It touched my heart.......2006-08-03
It was so beautifully writtent that I will never look at the sea the same ever agian. It makes you question your own heart and what you would do if you were in Gwen's position. I couldn't put it down since I read the first page.
Love conquers all.......2006-05-20
Seven Tears into the Sea was fantasy and real life mixed together.Gwen Cooke comes to stay with her grandmother over the summer but learns much more than she expected. Mirage Point, where she's staying, is where a mysterious past awaits her arrival. Her fears are replaced with love when she meets a boy from her past who sweeps her off her feet. Who is He? Why has he come back to this place? Seven tears in the sea will tell.It was beautifully written and I hope she writes many more.

Comme ci, comme ca.......2006-05-29
This book is good. Though I have read a Jacqueline Wilson book called, The Diamond Girls and it is better than this book. It had all kinds of different problems. In this book Eleanor Allard has problems that are non stop and are all the same problems. But I have also read another Jacqueline Wilson book called, Double Act, it was not very good. It had no boys or cosmetics. So this is my reason for giving Girls in tears four stars. This book was not the best book I have read, but not the worst.
Girls in Tears, Love the Series!!!!!.......2006-03-31
I enjoyed this book a lot! I like this book, and the other books in the series, because they have real life situations in them but they all have a little bit of a twist, which makes them more interesting!
At the beginning of this book Ellie, the main character, is getting really excited over a ring her boyfriend, Russel , gave her. Later on in the book she goes to a party with Russel and her best friends, Magda and Nadine, and the party has alcohol and they all start drinking. A while after this Ellie ends up getting sick and goes up to one of the bedrooms to lie down. When she gets up to leave she walks down the stairs, but can't get through because two people are making out at the bottom of the stairs, and the two are her boyfriend and her best friend Magda!!!!! But to find out what happens next READ IT!!!!
Jacqueline Wilson is a great author! I love this series and have read 2 others, Girls Under Pressure and Girls in Love, and am currently reading Girls Out Late!!! I loved them all!!! = )
GOSH!!! TEENAGERS! THERE SO STUPID!!!.......2005-06-11
Wilson, Jacqueline. Girls in Tears. New York: Random House Children's Books, 2002. 169 pgs.
Girls in Tears by Jaqeline Wilson is a great book for someone who is all into the life and drama of being a teenager. Ellie, Nadine, and Magda are the best of friends. They are thicker than peanut butter. Nothing can break them apart....until Ellie starts going out with her new boyfriend, Russel. According to Ellie, Russel is a dream come true. So much of a dream come true that she ditches her friends to be with him. " ' Don't friends come before boys? That's what you're always drumming us into' , says Nadine."(27). After Magda's hamster dies and Nadine has been flirting with a 19 year old on the internet, Ellie begans to wonder what kind of friends she really has. " Magda and Nadine have formed an exclusive twosome behind my back." She also begins to feel alone because her boyfriend enters Ellie's cartoon character, Ellie Elephant, in a contest behind her back. And on top of that Ellie and her step- mom are suspicous of her dad having an affair. After questioning her love for Russel several times, and being excluded from Magda and Nadine, Ellie meets this " Mr. Perfect" at the grocery store. His name is Kevin. Turns out he is gay, but still Ellie finds him very nice. Even though life isn't the best right now Ellie agrees to accompany Russel to a party. At the party Russel is acting like such a jerk!! He is Treating Ellie like some kind of ortament. She is Fed up so she begans to drink. After her friends have put her to sleep she wakes up to find Russel making out with some other chick!! Turns out the chick is Magda!! Ellie leaves immediately, drunk as can be. She wanders off until she is meets up with Kevin who kindly takes her home. Days go bye and she has ignored Russell, Magda, and Nadine. Until one day Magda comes knocking at her door. " ' You know this guy Ellis, the Internet one. Well she's meeting him tonight.' " (142) So trying to avoid the issue at the party, Ellie agrees to go with Magda to spy on Nadine. On the way there, Magda explains what happened at the party, and they make up. After waiting for a while they finally see Nadine and...Ellis? Turns out Ellis is much older. So Magda and Ellie go and scare him off. they comfort Nadine and they all head back home. Before Ellie goes home she stops by her dads office to see what's really going on. Turns out he was only painting and never said anything about it. Later, Ellie recieves a letter from Russell asking her if they can start over at Mcdonald's where they first met. Ellie goes but she is aware that things will be different. I Encourage all people in highschool to read this book because it really deals with some of the issues of being a teenager.
Hmm.. .......2005-05-11
I am not the type of teenager who has had a lot of boyfriends, but I felt that this book was very.. different to the kind of relationships that I know that my friends have had.
Wilson seems to forget that teen girls that are fourteen or turning fourteen often have pretend boyfriends - meaning that they just say that he is their boyfriend - yet never really having a relationship with them.
I understand that snogging (horrible word) etc are now, unfortunately, common for teens of that age. But it was overdone in the book.
Saying that, it was a good read - and I'm glad that Wilson told teens not to meet up with people that you meet online. It was a good point to make.
6/10 - Good But..
I'm in Tears :'(.......2004-10-06
When I finished this lovely book, I was in tears like the name of the book because Ellie's experiences are nearly like my experiences especially friends and family. I could feel as same as Ellie felt. I was happy when she was and I was in sorrow when she cried. This book can present about teenagers' life. I think Jacqueline Wilson has good understanding about teenagers' natures. In addition, she still maintained her attractive style of writing her books. I like the way that she began in each chapter with "Girls cry when..." because it relates with the name of the book. Everyone who likes Jacqueline Wilson's books should not miss `Girls in Tears', so "READ IT!" :)
