The Lowdown on GOING DOWN.......2007-10-11
Excellent read, once you get to the techniques. I also liked some of the psyche info. Helps a man understand the woman mind a little better, so we don't get so confused, lol. Anyway, the techniques take a little practice, and the tongue exercises are crucial. Your woman will worship you once you've got "things" perfected!!
Great Advice!.......2007-08-18
I also highly recommend - The Master's Guide to Cunnilingus: How to Perform Successful Oral Sex and Provide the Highest Degree of Pleasure Possible
After reading both books I can proudly say that I've become a better lover!
Useful.......2007-08-02
The book covers similar ground as 'She Comes First', which I also recommend. Michaels writes her book informally and conversationally.
The author's background as speech pathologist gives her a great deal of credibility - particularly when discussing the tongue. That's the strongest point. It's also a quick read. The weak point is that the book is good enough that it does not need the occasional sarcastic quips to support it. Sometimes it seemed that the authors were embarassed by the subject matter and felt the need to lighten it up. Understandable, but sometimes it smacked of too much effort. Drop some sarcasm and the book could be even better than it is. Even as is, it's still 4 stars. Let's see if it merits 5 big Os.
Very good.......2007-06-27
I felt pretty good about my knowledge of this area but I did learn some things I either didn't know or had forgotten we can all use a refresher. Worth the time and the cost would recommended to anyone wanting to increase the pleasure for both paties.
ok for linguists.......2007-05-13
I found this book verging on the ridiculus in as much as the excercises that one is expected to do with the lips, tongue and jaw are similar to an oral marathon.

For a little one who is reluctant to go to bed, sometimes a silly book is just the ticket. And when it comes to silly books, Sandra Boynton is the undisputed queen. In The Going to Bed Book, an ark full of animals watches the sun go down and then prepares for bed. They take a bath ("in one big tub"), find pajamas, brush their teeth, do exercises up on deck (imagine an elephant jumping rope, a moose lifting weights, and a pig doing handstands), and finally say good night.
The moon is high. The sea is deep.
They rock
and rock
and rock
to sleep.
Boynton's inimitable animal characters have graced the pages of scads of picture books over the years. She has an extraordinary knack for knowing what appeals to small children: simple rhymes, goofy animals in goofy settings, and sweet, comforting stories. This book, along with her many other board-book titles (Moo, Baa, La La La!, But Not the Hippopotamus, and others) will surely remain a favorite. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Cute but too short.......2007-10-10
I am forever searching for bedtime books because we rotate them out at night and it is always good to find new ones. I was really excited by reading the reviews of this one as we are big fans of Boynton. It is a cute book, but I think it is too short. Perhaps my daughter just likes to have a little more time reading before going to bed but I really wish it was just a few pages longer like some of her others.
a great book!.......2007-10-02
my daughter loves this book! we used to read a different story each night, but we have been stuck on this book for a couple of months, now. the story is fun and the pictures are bright, cute and great for kids to look at. it is the perfect length and works great for our night time reading ritual.
Delightful!.......2007-09-19
This book is utterly delightful! I bought it 3 years ago for my youngest son and it was hands down his favorite book. We read it so much that we still recite it by heart. Sandra Boynton has a way of writing books that not only delight the child, but it's infectious! (My little 1 year old daughter who is fascinated by belly buttons- also adores The Belly Button Book by the same author.) The Going To Bed Book is an absolute must for snuggly, silly bedtime routines (that actually are looked forward to!) with your little ones. It sits right next to another old favorite of ours...Goodnight Moon. =0)
No more tears at bedtime!.......2007-09-18
Send you child to bed laughing for a change, with this wonderful, fun-filled, silly, bedtime book! Great for baby sitters, too! Author/Illustrator
All Time Favorite Board Book.......2007-09-11
My kids and I love this book. We all have it memorized now after reading it for so many years, now we just quote it together for memory. I love to give this as a baby present.

Dangerous Words, Beware!.......2007-05-25
Chapter 8, titled: Is This Normal? States, "it is not unusual for a boy to watch another boy masturbate or to masturbate with a group of boys. Nor is it unusual for two boys to masturbate each other." My 13 year old son was accused of sexual assault by an 11 year old boy (a friend) after the 11 year old suggested they masturbated together, they did so on three occasions. The charge came a year later, social services and the police visited our home. Our younger son was almost removed from our home. Our 14 year old was questioned by police, charged, fingerprinted and we had to hire a lawyer. This book states that boys masturbating together or each other is not unusual. Maybe so, but it is a crime, and your child could be charged with sexual assault. Especially when the other child, out of guilt, fear, or revenge perhaps, tells his parents that he wasn't a willing participate once he realizes his "young, boyish curiosity" was a crime. BEWARE!
Very Insightful.......2007-05-15
I bought this book for my 12 year old son and he finds it to be very interesting. It has opened up discussions on things he would normally not discuss with me which has helped us have great conversations. I recommned this book for anybody with young boys going through puberty whom are normally not used to talking about what's going on with them.
For boys who want to know the facts, this book has the answers!.......2007-04-10
What's going on down there? A general question, perhaps, but one that boys between the ages of ten and fourteen ask regularly about the changes their bodies undergo during puberty. In Karen Gravelle's book, What's Going on Down There: Answers to Questions Boys Find Hard to Ask, she describes the physical and emotional changes that occur in boys (and, to a lesser extent, in girls) during puberty. In addition, Gravelle discusses sexual activity, homosexuality, AIDS, and other related topics. Gravelle had help with the book; 11- and 13-year-old brothers, Nick and Chava Castro, served as advisors, asking questions and working with Gravelle to make the book's language easy to read and to understand.
I bought this book for my older son when he was ten years old. I liked the funny and informative cartoons, and my cursory reading before giving it to him left me believing it might help him navigate the storms of puberty.
I had not read the book cover-to-cover, but I did so recently in connection with an assignment for my master's degree in library science. I am glad I did. Reading the book carefully served to confirm that I made a wise purchase five years ago, something I suspected when I noticed that my older son had handed down the book to his younger brother a few years ago.
Although the book has a few weird and wonderful moments (like stating that many women don't find childbirth to be particularly painful!), I found it to be an excellent source of practical, no-nonsense information. Some parents might be uncomfortable with the book's approach. The author includes frank discussions of orgasms, masturbation, and abortion, and the illustrator has a drawing of an orchidometer so boys can measure their testicles to see how far along they are in the puberty process. For parents who want their sons to know the facts about their bodies, though, and for boys who need to know those facts, this book is the one book on the subject I would recommend first.
so very informative.......2007-03-06
This book is packed full of useful information, easy to read, and helpful drawings. A must-read for any boy going through puberty.
Great Information!.......2007-02-08
I mailed a copy of this book to my 10 year old step son, because he was asking his father questions about the process of becoming a man. I read the book thoroughly. I believe the book is excellent. There are a few points in the book that will make a parent uncomfortable, but it is information a young boy needs to know, and deals with situations he has likely seen on television or in movies. My step son's mother did not let him read the book because she felt he did not need to be exposed to the small section on homosexuality and masturbation. I ordered a copy for him to read at our house, and he told his father he was glad to have the opportunity to read the book. He stated that the book addressed questions he would never have asked his mother, and that the book also helped him determine where his friends had given him misleading or incorrect information about what to expect during puberty. Overall, this is an excellent book, and I hope that parents won't let their fears override an otherwise excellent method of providing a young man with the information he desparately needs to know.

great food.......2007-10-07
Another great book full of the tastiest simplistic recipes I have grown to expect from Rachael Ray.
Horrible & too much Pork .......2007-10-01
This book is horrible especially if you are someone that doesn't like or prefers not to eat PORK since half the Book requires PORK PRODUCTS. The meals are short but unless you start preparing the items you need - no meal is 30 minutes. Some of the items are Quick but not 1/2 & I am a Great cook that was not satisfied with this book. Sorry :(
Disappointed!.......2007-08-29
I was extremely disappointed with the recipes. Most of the ingredients call for unusual cooking items and most recipes call for salt. They just weren't appealing and I probably won't use anything from the book.
Racheal Ray's 30-minute Get Real Meals: Eat Healthy Without Goimg to Extremes.......2007-07-11
I was excited by the reviews I read on this cookbook and the fact that the receipes were not time consuming. How I was very dissappointed. There are many receipes for cooking pork and beef, both of which I eat in very limited portions. Also some spices I am unfamiliar with and would hvae liked to know what part of the grocery store to find them, without having to spend a lot of time searching.
It's Real Alright!.......2007-06-24
This is a must have book for busy parents who need to feed their munchkins quick and healthy meals. Recipes from this book keep baby smiling all the time. And they help keep dad from being mistaken for a grounded blimp. The meals are savory and delicious. Now if I could only have Mrs. Ray over to cook one for us some night---that would be a great treat!
Book Description
Even if you've never attended a wedding in the South, you'll find laughter in the pages of this deliciously entertaining slice of Southern life and love, complete with recipes, advice, and a huge dose of that famous charm"In the Mississippi Delta, funerals bring out the best in people, while weddings, which are supposed to be happy occasions, bring out the worst." So say Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays, authors of the bestseller Being Dead Is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies' Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral, who turn their keen eyes and sharp wit from the end of the life cycle to the all-important midpoint. For anyone planning, participating in, or attending a wedding (Southern or not), this book will amuse, entertain, and provide advice for marital bliss, including:--It's OK to peek at an etiquette book, but if you rely too heavily on it, people will think that you are not fully acquainted with what is right and wrong. --Anything that was not done in the past doesn't need to be done now -- consider this before ordering a groom's cake, especially one featuring a fishing-tackle or golfing theme.
Customer Reviews:
Not your typical wedding book . . ........2007-10-01
I love this book! It captures the frantic activities of all involved with such
humor that you hope one of your over-age daughters will soon be headed for the altar! It definitely lives up to the title.
Truth Can Be So Funny.......2007-05-31
Wonderfully witty - way too tame a term! - but oh, so realistic book about weddings, interspersed with recipes and tales of weddings past. I loved it and am recommending it to all my southern and not so southern friends and relatives.
The Wedding Book.......2007-05-17
It was very good but not quite as good as their first book.
good book & recipes- 'being dead' much funnier.......2007-05-16
I am from the South and the funeral book had me laughing so hard i - liketa died crying. this one is good and funny but not nearly as hilarious as the first one. I have childhood memories full of the green punch so that is a great addition. The recipes look good and there seems to be extra ones including alcohol, which is probably more appropriate.
I loved how they added the author's pictures in the back. The one lady-Gayden definitely looks like she is a woman from the South. However, the other, Charlotte, definitely looks as though she has left the South, as well as forgeting her cosmetic case behind. Like myself, when you leave and live somewhere else for awhile (in the north), the pressure is off to keep yourself looking well groomed and with at least SOME makeup. Bare-faced does not look good on anyone and at least makeup protects the skin from wrinkles because of the sun's damage. If still living in the South, her friends would ask her, 'Are you OK!?' knowing she must be sick or depressed in order to be seen with no makeup and her hair looking like that. Maybe that should be their next book; the pressure of appearance, shaving your legs, and makeup in the South. I'd be happy to help them out.
I was excited to see they had another book, but it is not nearly as hilarious as the first. It seems more tamed, or influenced by someone else's editing, a humorless northerner perhaps. Still a good book with good to have recipes on hand. rms
I keep it in my Kitchen :).......2007-05-12
There are some wonderful recipes in these books...I have this one and the one about the funerals. They are kept with my cookbooks because that is pretty much what they are. Reminds me of Justin Wilsons' cookbooks.
Book Description
It's Sunday morning. Where are all the men? Golfing? Playing softball? Watching the tube? Mowing the lawn? Sleeping? One place you won't find them is in church. Less than 40 percent of adults in most churches are men, and 20 to 25 percent of married churchgoing women attend without their husbands. And why are the men who do go to church so bored? Why won't they let God change their hearts?
David Murrow's groundbreaking new book reveals why men are the world's largest unreached people group. With eye-opening research and a persuasive grasp on the facts, Murrow explains the problem and offers hope and encouragement to women, pastors, and men.
Why Men Hate Going to Church does not call men back to the church-it calls the church back to men.
Customer Reviews:
Undusting the church to make it more attractive to men.......2007-09-01
I just finished the book trying to find the reason why there are so few men in church today. More over, why there are so few men my age group (single and around 30).
The book gives a thouroughly researched based study going far down to the bottom of the matter to understand, illustrate and also give advice how to reach the Church-shy Male of today. It's gotta real healthy dose of humour and christian self criticism that would make even a "stout" Christian crack up and recognize the truth behind the comments.
For me it's an inspiration and an eye opener to understand my own male church goer needs (and at times the lack of fullfillment) and what I can do to bring my unchurched buddies to God without having to make them sit through a sermons that really does not reach them and an environment that could make them feel uncomfortable.
My quest goes on to reach my masculine spiritual needs and the wish to reach my circle of friends, work, social, but also church buddies to discover the adventure of being an upright christian and becoming "Sons of God".
Thanks to this book and the inspiration it has given me, I hope that I can start influencing my own church, country (Switzerland) and beyond. Would be great if this book was translated to German ASAP because the market in Europe is huge and the (male) church attendance (as the book illustrates) devastating!
Have a go at this book and see what the reasons are for the malre absence and what can be done already, with small adjustments in your life and/or Church and see how the men start coming back!
Some good points, but it missed the mark........2007-08-20
I have mixed feelings about this book. In part, it is because I agreed with the author when I read the book, but after I had some time to think about it, I concluded that he missed the mark. Murrow has a writing style that is easy to read, so I had no trouble reading the book from cover to cover. What is missing from Murrow's book is the proof. His basic premise is that men do not like church because it is not manly enough. Where is the proof that churches are not manly enough? Is it enough to say that there are elements that are better suited for women? I do not think so.
Part of the reason that I initially agreed with Murrow was that I can look at my own church and see some of the things that he suggests favors women. There are people within our church who take special care to see that the building looks attractive. On any given Sunday, a person can hear discussion of the Christian romance novels that grace several shelves of the church library. There are plenty of social gathering activities that are primarily handled by women. It is easy to look at these things and conclude that since we have these things, that is the reason that men are not coming to church, but there is a problem with this.
The problem that I see with the premise is that I can look at our church and I see men who are attending church. I see men who are actively involved in church. I have neither counted, nor do I intend to, but it would not surprise me if we found that there are more men then women who are actively involved in church activities. The actual numbers would probably fairly close, but we have many men who are involved in many different tasks. Some of these tasks fit within those that Murrow seems to think are not manly enough, while others may be.
Murrow's book may be a good way to start the discussion of why some men do not like church, but it should not be taken to be the definitive guide. I believe there is more work that needs to be done before we draw any firm conclusions. There may be some need to revamp some of the programs in churches, but I cannot help but think that if more men were involved the programs would automatically take on a more manly flavor rather than revamped programs being what is needed to draw men back to church.
I finally get it!.......2007-08-20
After years of not understanding why the masculine men in my life can have strong faith and yet hate going to church, I finally get it. Church is geared toward women. Simple? Yes. But it took this book to explain it to me. This book offered concrete examples of feminine practices I see in every church I attend but never recognized as reasons why my men avoid church. Read it; think about it; use it.
A bit narrow.......2007-08-13
The book has some good principles at the end about the needs of men. But, it is terrible in application and simplifies things so much so. I think it could cause another worship war. The publishers are probably glad for the "shockjock" type tone. I am not. What about hispanic or other cultures? The author really did not think too well about how diverse our nation is and did not acknowledge that he sees beyond a white-middle class culture.
Besides the negative, I do think he brings out a very important discussion. I just wish he was more culturally aware since he most likely is preaching to a choir that already hates anything that is too creative and is looking for validation.
This book is SPOT ON!.......2007-06-21
I am posting this under my wife's account, but I swear I am a man! :)
Murrow has definitely nailed men's ministry and he understands men and their needs. If you lead a church or are involved with ministering to men, this is a MUST read. I bought his DVD and his book, the dvd was great, agreed with 99% of it, and I am currently half way through the book. I am underlining probably 30-50 words per page. 5/5 STARS!!!

The thinking's not fuzzy in these board books, but the animals certainly are. Sandra Boynton's familiar furry creatures introduce simple concepts in this bright collection of four books, replete with clever line drawings. In Horns and Toes and In Between, three horned monsters teach the parts of the body in rhyme: "...and we have a fuzzy TUMMY that we all like to pat / and a little BELLY BUTTON in the middle of that." The Going to Bed Book gets a Noah's Ark of animals organized for bed: "They hang their towels on the wall / and find pajamas, big and small." Opposites is just that: cute animals "high and low / fast and slow / heavy and light / day and night." In the rhyming reader But Not the Hippopotamus, a hippo finds himself on the outs as "a cat and two rats are trying on hats. / But not the hippopotamus. / A moose and a goose together have juice. / But not the hippopotamus." Rest assured the hippo finds love at the end. (Baby to preschool) --Claire Dederer

Boyton Rocks!.......2007-09-24
Sandra Boyton books are always a big hit at our house-she writes some terrific children's books that all kids seem to love!
4 great books.......2007-09-03
The Going to Bed book is my son's favorite of all time and all of the books' clever sing-song rhymes make even adult readers smile- like when they all go up to exercise after they've bathed and brushed their teeth.
Pick and Choose your Boyntons.......2007-09-03
Sadly, not only our toddler (18 mos) but we parents, as readers, were disappointed in this Boynton collection, Although the title of "Greatest Hits" implied that these books were among children's favorites. We have found this not to be true. While reading the books aloud they do not have the lyrical magic of other Boynton's like "Hippos Go Berserk," "Snuggle Puppy," "Barnyard Dance, " or "Moo, Baa, La La La!." Sandra Boynton has the gift of creating language and drawings that touch children's imaginations. These books aren't the best examples of that talent. Buy Boynton, but buy other books instead of her Greatest Hits, Vol. II.
Boynton's Books.......2007-07-16
I bought these books and a 'horned'stuffed animal for a baby shower gift. I like to give books for little ones. They don't out grow them right away. Always been a fan of this author. Very funny and cute pictures.
Love this set!.......2007-03-29
I purchased this set for my 10 month old daughter. They are sturdy board books, beautifully illustrated with fun, rhythmic text. The hippo book is our absolute favorite. Highly recommended!!

100 Days of Weight Loss: The Secret to Being Successful on ANY Diet Plan

Book Description
Eat, Drink, and Weigh Less offers a medically sound, extremely effective program that shows people how they can lose weight by adding delicious food to their diet and making simple changes in what they eat throughout the day. Its flexible and adaptableand it really works. It features a powerful way to chart your progress called the Body Score. The more you raise your Body Score, the more you will lower your weight! A quiz at the beginning of the book helps readers determine their Body Score; the chapters that follow explain easy dietary and behavioral steps readers can take to improve their scores. While the concept is simple, the science behind it is not. It represents years of top research conducted by Dr. Walter C. Willett, the head of Harvard School of Public Healths Department of Nutrition, including the famous Nurses Health Study. This study scored each of its over 84,000 participants on food choices, exercise schedule, and body massresulting in a number that accurately determined the nurses risk of heart disease. Now, for the first time, Dr. Willett has teamed up with mega-bestselling cookbook author Mollie Katzen to adapt a similar, much easier scoring system to create a user-friendly diet plan with fail-safe results. If you can raise your score, you will lower your weightall while eating delicious, easy-to-prepare foods.

excellent information, easy to use.......2007-08-27
I am a psychologist and a work with people with eating disorders, and I use this book as a reference for my clients all the time. The information is clear, straight-forward, and the "system" they have created for losing weight includes not only food choices, but how you eat, when you eat, and the importance of exercise. About half of this book is dedicated to food recipies and very practical information like what to look for on labels at the grocery store. There is nothing "extreme" or dogmatic about this program - it is about being healthy and how to make good choices. There is a two page questionaire that you fill out every day to see how many "points" you get - the more points, the better towards your goal of losing weight - this is nice, because it forces you to look at your behavior every day and set specific goals towards change. I highly recommend this book!
An outstanding reference book........2007-08-23
This book and its' predecessor are all anyone needs to find his way to a healthy lifestyle.
A healthy combination .......2007-07-18
Walter Willet is the head of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard and author of 'Eat, Drink , and Be Healthy'. He opens the book with a personal preface explaining his family connection with good food, and farming. He then tells about his professional career and his participation in Dr. Frank Speizer's 'Nurses Health Study' enabled him to better understand the principles of proper nutrition.
His collaborator Molly Katzen author of the 'Moosewood Cook Book' is a specialist in preparing and providing healthy vegetable rich meals. Her job in the book is to provide the recipes which will be in tune with the principles Dr. Willett elaborates.
These principles they label nine turning points. 1) Eat Lots of Vegetables and Fruits 2) Say Yes to Good Fats 3) Upgrade your carbohydrates 4) Choose healthy proteins 5)Stay hydrated 6) Drink Alcohol in moderation (optional) 7)Take a multavitamin every day 8)Move more 9) Eat mindfully all day long.
They also provide a method for assessing your 'body-score' of keeping tabs on how you are doing, and improving it. They also provide three different food regimens, each for a different purpose. A warm-up plan to get people going into proper eating, a twenty- one day more rapid weight- loss diet, and a long- term maintenance plan.
Part three of the book contains the recipes, and Part Four is what they call a Tool Kit, a shopping guide, and a guide on how to eat well through life's ups and downs.
It is hard for me to believe that most readers would know all the information and insight provided in this book. i.e. I think there must be something valuable for all ' conscious eaters' even if the very knowledgeable.
I am not a big maven on this subject but I have taken an interest in it for years. Nonetheless I learned many things from this book. Why of all vegetables one of my great favorites 'potatoes' is not recommended for a diet. Why the whole wheat grains and rices are truly preferable to the white- stuff as they slow down digestion and absorption. Why cooked tomatoes are a valuable ingredient in the diet. Why the best diet is not a fat- free but rather one which makes use of the 'healthy kind of fat'. Why tuna, salmon, mackerel, herring providing Omega -3 are so important for our health. Why and how conscious eating can make for a truly improved feeling about oneself and one's life.
This is a very good book and I highly recommend it.
Creative yet simple plan for vegetarians and carnivores.......2007-06-01
I thought I knew all I needed to know about nutrition--omega-3s and brocolli are good, cheeseburgers are bad--but my frame of reference has shifted as a result of this book. The USDA-sponsored food pyramid, for instance, is helpfully critiqued. Also, this book accommodates vegetarians, flexitarians, and omnivores alike. Most of all, I appreciate the emphasis on taking good care of oneself and enjoying food--very unusual for a "diet book." I am grateful for Dr. Willet's and Mollie Katzen's efforts to address poor nutrition and obesity in the land of plenty.
Great background material, recipes not so much.......2007-05-15
This book is great for outlining a better, healthier way to live. The breakdown is easy to follow, explanations are clear (are make sense) and the shopping guidelines are great. As with Katzen's other cookbooks, the recipies are still a little too out there for my family (i.e. my meat-eater and 8 year old son). I have made a few of the recipes and I've used the others as a template for my own meals. I would still recommend this book to anyone who wants a model to follow for how to create a healthy, lasting relationship with food.

sounded good.......2007-07-28
It just wasn't. the book is for single people who like to party and sleep around... I'm not any of these things. It sounded like a mature book but turned out to be a bunch of stuff I already know about life.
When Am I Going to be happy?.......2006-01-31
Very helpful book. Think everyone should take a look that needs direction in ur life.
Easy to read, to the point.......2005-09-10
This book is very easy to read and gets right to the point. The author is very insightful and really helps you to recognize your emotional bad habits and gives practical, almost simple (in a good way), suggestions to overcome them. It's easy to flip back to the reviews at the end of the sections for the main points to remember. I ordered a 2nd book for a close friend who is now reading it.
Amazing little book.......2004-06-20
This is without doubt one of the best self help books I've ever read, I have been reading self help books for three years now trying to break free from the oughts and shoulds of life.
Its helping me find the authentic me and giving me a spine of self confidence to live life as I believe I'm meant to.
I thoroughly reccommend this book.

Book Description
For millennia, the culture and philosophy of the ancient Egyptians have fascinated artists, historians, and spiritual seekers throughout the world. Now, with this deluxe edition, the legendary 3,500-year-old Papyrus of Ani—the most beautiful of the ornately illustrated Egyptian funerary scrolls ever discovered—has been restored in its original sequences of text and artwork, using the latest advances in computer-imaging technology. Four exquisitely illustrated gatefold spreads and an acclaimed translation by two noted Egyptologists showcase the Papyrus's elaborately bordered images and convey its intended sense of motion and meaning in a way that other books on the subject cannot begin to match. For both lay readers and scholars interested in a wide range of topics—from mysticism and philosophy to anthropology and astronomy—this sumptuous and accessible new volume will be an essential acquisition.??

Modern Translation With Some Lacking Overstanding and Obscure Structuring.......2007-09-13
Revised review: This book is even more difficult to rate than The Tibetan Book of the Dead: First Complete Translation (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) and The Ethiopian Book of Life (aka An Ethiopian Book of the Dead). As it isn't only the ancient book and the modern revised translation to be considered. Because the so-called Ani Papyrus is ancient, yes, yet a faulty, abridged and erratically composed pre-manufactured work. For example, it had been forgotten twice to include the name of the customer, this papyrus had been purchased for, into the blank space provided for this purpose. Even in the unabridged and correctly structured version of the "(The Chapters of) Going Forth by Day and Night... to the Place he Might Desire to Be", as the complete real title translates as, the author of the edition, James Wasserman, writes about: "Much of the book is frankly incromprehensible, even for experts. No amount of exegesis can explain many passages. Images and allusians follow one another with bewildering force and frequency, lacking thematic and logical connection." In this "Ani Papyrus" (Ani being the Western version of the name of the deceased this papyrus had been purchased for) the vignettes and/or chapter titles do not necessarily match the text beneath them.
This "Book of the Dead" isn't really the/a full theology of ancient Egypt, but PRESUPPOSING full knowledge about it. Which is simply not obtainable to the modern reader by merely enjoying this text as a supposedly funerary object. In reality it isn't, but an INITIATION ritual of the new/renewed pharao. For a mystical approaches read Shamanic Wisdom in the Pyramid Texts: The Mystical Tradition of Ancient Egypt and Egyptian Yoga Vol. 1:: The Philosophy of Enlightenment.
As for the modern publication: The facsimile of the vignettes had been published originally in 1890 under the supervision of E. A. Wallis Budge and quality enhanced for this new edition. The translation is based on the 1972 version of Raymond Faulkner, and additional corrections have been included by other translators after that. The book was published first in 1994 and was then revised in 1998. The presentation of the papyrus is well done. However, the structure of the entire modern book leaves much to be desired. As I read from cover to cover as usual, afterwards, I wished I hadn't. I would have gotten more out of the book in a different approach: Glossary (at the very end of book), foreword-preface-introduction, commentary p.137-154, then in combination the individual Ani Papyrus plates + English translation with the explanations of those individual plates in the commentary p. 154-170, with the abridged chapters of the "Theben recension" p. 99-135 in between. It should be noted that the translation directly beneath the "Ani Papyrus" isn't a 100% match to the papyrus presented above, as some sections have been included or changed according to the "Theben recension". Sounds complicated? Exactly. And the book isn't really that easy to handle, for oversize also means overweight. What is missing is vignettes and most certainly comments of the "Theben recension". Be upwised that the "Ani Papyrus" is a mere fraction of the entire "Theben recension". In other words, to read the entire so-called (Egyptian) Book of the Dead, the "Ani Papyrus" qualifies as a trailer and this edition of the modern book makes for a major obstacle reading - which you find out only, after having read this book unsuspectingly for the first time.
Also considered has to be the content of the commentaries and introductions. Honestly, I wouldn't do without, no question. However, James Wasserman and his colleagues are orthodox egyptologists. For one thing, they are still working with the traditional Imes (time) frame for ancient Egypt, which is explainable in having worked on this book in the early 1990s. Sin-ce then, the Imes fakings of an early Berlin egyptologist have been exposed, who attempted to make the ancient Egyptian civilization appear to be much younger in order for less embarrassment for Europe in relation to that. The further you go back, the more additional Imes get accumulated. By the Imes of this specific Ani Papyrus, this is a bit more than a century of difference only, earlier it is about millennia. (Read more in When We Ruled: The Ancient and Medieval History of Black Civilisations.)
Next, the Western rendered names of ancient Egyptian names are used. Though currently, it isn't EXACTLY possible to produce the real pronouncation/Western transcription of names, much better approximations are possible and indeed used in more African centered books. (The Black African nature of the ancient Egyptian culture is attempted to get veiled by orthodox [= Euro centered] egyptologist. For example, there is no mention in the otherwise meticulous commentary of the various - and changing! - skin colors of the characters depicted in the vignettes. As is still the case in religious paintings of today's West Africans, some of the ancestors of the ancient Egyptians, these colors do not always represent the real skin color, but religious meaning according to the respective function of the situation depicted.)
Last not least the book isn't only averring a purely polytheistic religion, but directly denying any mysticism and monotheism of the ancient Egyptians. Thereby, the direct ancestry of the Judo-Christian-Islamic culture is attempted to get severed from (Black) Africa. On first sight, ancient Egypt APPEARS to be polytheistic. Yet, in reality, all the gods were considered to be facets of a single one. Even more: Everything is One, not only the god(s). At the Imes, this book had been written, it may have been quite easy to sweep away any claims of monotheism (or actually pantheism) for ancient Egypt, without even taking the time to go into those claims and attempting to disprove them. Today that approach simply cannot be done anymore. Too many mystics and progressive and African-centered egyptologists have come forward. Read for example Egyptian Divinities: The All Who Are THE ONE or the books by Muata Ashby, such as The Mystical Journey from Jesus to Christ. The difficulty the author of this book experiences is that he doesn't know the mystic level of the Western religion, Christianity. By overstanding e.g. Master Eckhart of the 14th century, he would be capable of not blinding the monotheism of ancient Egypt better. Instead, James Wasserman says that it would sound hubris to us today that after death one becomes (a) god. Yet, mysticism all over the world - ancient or modern alike - knows that we already are, but have forgotten that until we "die". Accordingly, Wasserman blinds "denial of death" and vocabulary such as "passing on" instead of "dying" as euphemisms of supposedly avoided dealings with the inevitable perishing quality of the death concept. That is, because he is caught in the myth and rites level of his branch of religion. Which makes it difficult to REALLY translate and comment ancient Egyptian religious texts, especially this one. The literal words may come closer and closer, but the meaning will remain sphinxed. For example he gives the translations of the "prime" god Atum as "He Who Is Entirety" or "The Undifferentiated One", but can't see that this means that EVERYTHING is meant with that, as God is undifferentiated from anything and within. Which includes ourselves, returning to the state of this knowledge after "death", i.e. "becoming" God/Jah/the universe/etc., (Asar/Osiris in this case).
Besides all of that I find it interesting that this papyrus contains the odd gender bending in the text as well as the vignettes, but does NOT contain any amorist (homophobe) notions. Simply, because I have come across some books averring that. Referred to are the up to 42 "negative confessions" or rather "declarations of innocence" which are often compared to the Christain Ten Commandments. This may have been a result of the previous, faulty and prejudiced translation of E. A. Wallis Budge. I always wondered about that supposed Egyptian amorism, as it didn't really seem to fit either the "androgynous"/non-dualist religion and the Imes, as amorist interpretations of earlier holy texts occurred much later historically for the Egyptians really to have been able to be amorist in the first place. Instead I could find declarations of innocence of not making slaves, not making hungry, not building a dam on flowing water and not hunting animals. But also of not fornicating and at first sight strange appearing ones such as not copulating and not extinguishing fires.
New computer enhanced version of the Book of the Dead.......2007-03-24
The ancient Egyptian bible, everyone who could afford one was buried with one. This is a new version, and has English translations on each page with color images. It is a guidebook for the deceased person to follow to find his way to the afterlife to live on forever. The Egyptians were not obsessed with death but with obtaining the perfect afterlife. Sound familiar?
By the way I do agree with the excellent reviews already here. But, to make it accessable to Western eyes, I think NOT to refer to it as a sort of "Bible" is a bit confusing I think. The ancient Egyptians studied it, tried to memorize it, and took it with them in their sarcophagus if they could afford to, in order to have access to it when they awoke and needed to start their journey to the West (afterlife). It held all they needed to know to get there safely.
This version, I understand, is the best new one ever and most accurate translation. Fascinating just to go through, the art is wonderful.

Very much appreciated.
