Nicole Krauss's The History of Love is a hauntingly beautiful novel about two characters whose lives are woven together in such complex ways that even after the last page is turned, the reader is left to wonder what really happened. In the hands of a less gifted writer, unraveling this tangled web could easily give way to complete chaos. However, under Krauss's watchful eye, these twists and turns only strengthen the impact of this enchanting book.
The History of Love spans of period of over 60 years and takes readers from Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe to present day Brighton Beach. At the center of each main character's psyche is the issue of loneliness, and the need to fill a void left empty by lost love. Leo Gursky is a retired locksmith who immigrates to New York after escaping SS officers in his native Poland, only to spend the last stage of his life terrified that no one will notice when he dies. ("I try to make a point of being seen. Sometimes when I'm out, I'll buy a juice even though I'm not thirsty.") Fourteen-year-old Alma Singer vacillates between wanting to memorialize her dead father and finding a way to lift her mother's veil of depression. At the same time, she's trying to save her brother Bird, who is convinced he may be the Messiah, from becoming a 10-year-old social pariah. As the connection between Leo and Alma is slowly unmasked, the desperation, along with the potential for salvation, of this unique pair is also revealed.
The poetry of her prose, along with an uncanny ability to embody two completely original characters, is what makes Krauss an expert at her craft. But in the end, it's the absolute belief in the uninteruption of love that makes this novel a pleasure, and a wonder to behold. --Gisele Toueg
Book Description
The illuminating national bestseller: "Vertiginously exciting
vibrantly imagined
.[Krauss is] a prodigious talent."Janet Maslin, New York Times
A long-lost book reappears, mysteriously connecting an old man searching for his son and a girl seeking a cure for her widowed mother's loneliness.
Leo Gursky is just about surviving, tapping his radiator each evening to let his upstairs neighbor know he's still alive. But life wasn't always like this: sixty years ago, in the Polish village where he was born, Leo fell in love and wrote a book. And though Leo doesn't know it, that book survived, inspiring fabulous circumstances, even love. Fourteen-year-old Alma was named after a character in that very book. And although she has her hands fullkeeping track of her brother, Bird (who thinks he might be the Messiah), and taking copious notes on How to Survive in the Wildshe undertakes an adventure to find her namesake and save her family. With consummate, spellbinding skill, Nicole Krauss gradually draws together their stories.
This extraordinary book was inspired by the author's four grandparents and by a pantheon of authors whose work is haunted by lossBruno Schulz, Franz Kafka, Isaac Babel, and more. It is truly a history of love: a tale brimming with laughter, irony, passion, and soaring imaginative power.

A very creative undertaking...........2007-10-12
I won't rehash the plot of this novel which has been done here over and over. I'll merely say that it's not written in a conventional way but that's what is so special about it. The book can be confusing and challenging to read but at the end, you'll be glad you did because it's a work of art in the best sense. It's different, creative and thought-provoking. So what if it's not easy to read? You will find yourself, like I did, flipping the pages quickly at the end to find out what happens. It's a love story with a great ending. Make up your own mind.
When will it end? Where will it end?.......2007-09-29
This book was so well reviewed by the majority of readers that I feel I have to weigh in since my thoughts on the book are not as appeciative. Krauss can turn a phrase deftly and beautifully at times and there were some passages in the book worth writing down and saving but the story, essentially one of plagiarism, ill-fated love and missed opportunities becomes a slog. In fact, whenever the narration leaves Leo's first person and switches to Alma, or Bird near the end (why Bird!?), it loses strength. The story, convoluted as it is, doesn't sustain itself and in the end you just want it all to get wrapped up. It does but in a sketchy kind of way that still leaves lots of questions (but not in an interesting literary kind of way; more a "Oh please get on with it" kind of way). I started not to care about any of the characters except Leo who I just wanted to win one at last. Even his second book is-- unwittingly-- plagiarized by being pubished under his dead son's name. The fixation on Alma is obviously an Alma of the past because the Alma Leo meets once he arrives in America basically sends him on his way. Leo's story is the most compelling and the whole book, as far as I'm concerned, could have been about him and then might have been a great book. The book suffers from the hype of being fashionable but I don't think will stand the test of time.
A Unique Read.......2007-09-24
This book about the history of a book called the History of Love was a joy to read. Intelligently written, unique characters, and out and out funny at times. Wish there were more of these out there.
Read it twice to love it.......2007-09-23
This is a book you will love or hate. It takes time and rereading to understand it. If you put in the love and the time, just as in life, it will bring you understanding.
Lovely book.......2007-09-08
"History of Love" is compelling story, told in a non-linear fashion, so the experience of reading the book resembles the experience of being in love. This author is quite wise for someone her age -- she depicts an old man, young teenage girl, and other characters with depth and interest.

Not the only pocket book........2006-09-25
This book is ubiquitous. Everyone has it. Not everyone needs it. Students don't need it. Sub I's don't need it. So don't buy it. Interns need it-Hit the milk man/lady up for a copy. It's a great reference, but not the only one. Schwartz' clinical pediatrics is better for students and sub-I's. Plus i think Schwartz has a bit more info on diseases and differentials that Harriet. They serve different purposes though. Hospital for sick children has a great book too. The Harriet formulary is helpful, but not always the best source for doses or side effects. I like the skyscape version best. Palm better than pocket PC.
I recommend that you take this book to kinko's, have them split the book in half-i divided mine into the disease section and formulary section. Have them spiral bind it and place plastic covers. It will last longer and you can carry around whichever half you need or put one in each pocket to even out the weight.
This a great book for interns.
The Harriet Lane Handbook: A Manual for Peduatric House Officers, 17th edition.......2006-08-30
This book is a must for anyone who cares for children in their practice.
Best Peds Reference.......2006-07-31
This book is all you need in your pocket during Pediatric Rotations. Great quick references, every drug dosing.
Great little book!.......2006-03-12
Contains a huge amount of information about pediatrics. Extremely helpful when studying for tests or when making rounds and seeing patients in the clinic.
significantly improved edition, required book for peds residents.......2006-01-13
Harriet is Harriet. If you're going into pediatrics, this is your handbook or white coat book of choice. It is NOT adequate for everything-you-need to know, and there's plenty that's not in here, but it's still the handbook I go to multiple times a day as a resident. The new edition is significantly improved--there is now a rheumatology section, the medications are updated, and the fluids chapter has been rewritten (the earlier version was downright byzantine). Of course, the spine does not seem changed to be stronger, and I'm afraid that pages will start falling out in about a year or so. I think it's worth having the new edition personally, but I can't absolutely recommend it if you have the previous edition (it depends on how often you use it, and what 50 bucks means to you).
Book Description
She was the most outlandish, outrageous, in-your-face symbol of the age - and suddenly, shockingly, she was gone. In life her antics, adventures and behavior kept a nation riveted; in death she stunned a world gripped by the surprise and swiftness of her unexpected passing. The woman was, of course, Anna Nicole Smith. This is the story of the little girl from west of nowhere, born into a broken, dysfunctional, dirt-poor family, told by the one woman who knew her best - her sister. Her fierce resolve, pluck, luck and determination allowed her to claw her way to celebrity status, becoming a tabloid staple, and to reach the potential of unimaginable wealth. And then, in a moment, she was gone, not yet 40 years old. A Horatio Alger story with a bitter ending, TRAIN WRECK- The Life and Death of Anna Nicole Smith, is the definitive story of the rise and swift fall of one of the most compelling characters to blaze across the American sky.
Customer Reviews:
Uhhh what?.......2007-09-28
Luckily I didn't spend money on this book because it gave me a headache just trying to get through the first chapter. The writing is SO BAD. I can't believe she collaborated with someone and this is the best they could do. It jumps around so much and alot of the book has nothing to do with Anna at all. I figure the reason for that is Donna's writing what she knows and she DOESN'T KNOW ANNA. It's all old news and assumptions. I could have written all the "secrets" that are in this book. Most of the photos are of Donna's family which sure they're partially related, but these people don't know Anna.
If you *have* to read this book, do what I did, and go to the library.
grave-robbing at its best... .......2007-09-22
one word: trash. i bought this book because i felt, well, that no one could probably tell us the personality of this strong woman (and anyone who has gone through what anna nicole smith went through is definitely strong). i figured her sister would clue me in about the culture that brought this young woman to a tragic end. i must say, it is not there. this book would probably amount to "gossip" and nothing else. if you want to read everything you have already heard in the media, it is an okay read. if you are curious about anna nicole's life, this book won't offer you much.
Train Wreck.......2007-09-12
I thought this book was very interesting. I have never been a fan of Anna but found this book to be a good read.I now understand Anna a little better and see that she really had a very sad life. If you are a fan or not this is a good book.
Love you Anna!!!!.......2007-09-09
Good book, I ordered it the second it came out. Very nice cover and image, beautiful packaging. Donna Hogan is a decent writer. I think she might have been false on a few things but over all it was good and worthwhile for Die-hard Anna fans like myself. I LOVE ANNA NICOLE!!!!!!! Been her biggest fan since she came out. She is the most beautiful creature to have ever graced this planet and it is a shame she is gone. Rest is Peace Beautiful and keep the books comin!!!!!
"User-Loser".......2007-09-08
Donna Hogan is just exactly what Anna said she was a "user-loser". She is trying to get her 15 minutes by trashing her half sister who she obviously really knows nothing about. Everything she claims to know comes from the media. She is the epitome of "trailer trash" and too ignorant to realize it. She thinks that her own sleeping with married men and whoever else will have her makes her worldly and sofisticated and that her use of Anna's name to further her causes is ok, yet she trashes her half sister who doesn't appear to have done anything worse than she herself has done. I wish I hadn't purchased this book because I hate to think of her succeeding in making money from trashing her dead sister. She is disgusting.

Finally an accurate ANNA NICOLE SMITH biography.......2007-10-18
I found this book GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL DOLL: THE ANNA NICOLE SMITH STORY to be the most accurate and informative biography out on the market today about this beautiful blonde. I also found it to be an easy read and very to the POINT. I was pleased with learning the facts....AND JUST THE FACTS! Sad to see that ANNA is gone from our lives now....but at least not forgotten.
Shocking.......2007-10-06
Shocking. Absolutely shocking book. That gal would do anything. I just pray that Dannielynn never reads this book.
can i say gold digger?!!.......2007-10-01
thought the book was very well written. it makes me wonder who can really be a fan of anna nicole. she absolutely seem to be out of control her whole life and used people(yes male and female) for what she could get out of them and step on them on her way to the next. poor daniel didnt have a chance. she exposed this young man to things he should have never seen or known about from a very young age. this story covers her life from about junior high until her death. exposes her lifestyle and the spend spend ways she lived her life.if someone gave her 100,000 she spent 1,000.000. out of control! it is a wonder she lived as long as she did, since she drank and took drugs from 16 till the end. reveals to what lengths she would go to get her hands on money....married men, single men, good men,bad men without ONE BIT OF GUILT!! shocking what depths she would go to. very good read....to bad it is a true story!!!
Great Big Beautiful Doll: The Anna Nicole Smith Story.......2007-06-27
I thought this book was well written but thought there were parts that didn't need to be in the book. I didn't think the nude pictures needed to be in the book to sell it.
The book gave a good sense of how Anna Nicole lived and what a weak person she was. She let herself be lead around by people just because she wasn't educated and she loved money and fame. It is worth reading if you were a Anna Nicole fan.
A 'must' acquisition for any general lending library.......2007-06-17
GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL DOLL: THE ANNA NICOLE SMITH STORY couldn't be more timely: it's released in a newly updated edition to provide a biography of Smith's rise to fame and her glitzy, bright life. The authors aren't outsiders to her life, either: Redding is the photographer who helped launch her career with his Polaroid's; his life was Smith's hairstylist. Their personal relationship with Smith spices her biography and the inclusion of many rare photos makes for a 'must' acquisition for any general lending library; especially those where biographies of celebrities are in demand.

Making nutritious, homemade baby food has never been so easy!
Baby food doesn't have to come in jars, and making your own at home is not difficult. Baby food is strained, puréed or mashed adult food - just a different version of the food you prepare for yourself.
Here are three good reasons to make baby food at home:
- Knowing what's in it, therefore ensuring healthy and wholesome meals.
- Tailoring the texture to your baby's preferences.
- Shaping baby's tastes and helping him/her learn what fresh foods taste like.
Whether choosing to make all baby's food at home, or just some of it, the blender is a great way to offer new flavors in a baby-friendly texture. Once a child begins to eat table food, there is always an occasion for a fruit smoothie or a nutritious blended dip.
Here's a sampling of the deliciously easy recipes:
-
Six Months and Older: Peach and Pear Bananarama, Melon Madness, Zucchini and Nectarines, Roasted Vegetable Purée
-
Eight Months and Older: Vegetable Paella, Humus for Beginners, Chicken with Red Peppers and Corn, Beefy Broccoli
-
Nine Months and Older: Lemon Raspberry Yogurt, Over the Top Applesauce, Spinach and Tomatoes with Ricotta, Fisherman's Pie
-
Twelve Months and Older: Orange Banana Smoothie, Very Berry Pears, Broccoli and Cauliflower Melt, Veggie Cream Sauce
All the recipes in
Blender Baby Food are accompanied by suggested age guidelines. Also included are lots of great tips for making baby food, storage and freezing guidelines as well as the appropriate way to thaw and reheat food. Plus, none of the recipes calls for any of the salt, sugar, starches or fillers found in many commercially prepared baby foods.
Blender Baby Food helps parents give their baby the best nutritional advantage.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to use~.......2007-10-11
I am a first time mom and a first born. I want details and instructions to work from!
While some might find the details in this book common sense, I love to have exact measurements and formulas. Once you are comfortable with the process you can mix and match your own recipes...the possibilities are endless.
For those of you who may think making food takes too much time, just incorporate this into your normal cooking times. For example, if I am boiling or baking for dinner, then I can easily peel a couple of sweet potatoes and throw them on the stove to boil at the same time.
The book has helped our family save money on baby food from the store (I do buy a couple of jars for eating on the go). AND because it's so much more affordable to make baby food I feel like I can splurge on organic veggies for my little man.
You can do it and this book is a great resource!
Tons of great recipes.......2007-08-28
I have two other baby food cookbooks, and this one has the best selection of healthy, simple food combinations. When your baby is too old for blender food, there are tons of suggestions on how to serve the recipes for older kids and even adults. They also have sample meal plans if you are starting from no knowledge of what to feed a baby. They use lots of different ingredients too, like celery root and beets but mixing them with other foods that make it taste good for kids. The recipes are easy and healthy which is what baby food should be.
Wonderful!!.......2007-08-23
This book is absolutely wonderful. I have been using it often, making a variety of foods straight from our friends and families gardens! It's great to know exactly what is going in my childs food. The chapters are very clear to understand, simple recipes too, with food that we eat on a daily basis. I have already purchased 2 more of this book for gifts and so far they love it too!
Perfect Starter Book.......2007-08-14
This book is simple, and told me exactly what I wanted to know to get started. How long to boil/steam, about how much water to add, etc. I would recommend reading the intro chapters as that is where you get the tips on nitrates, what food you can store (she makes notes on the recipes that don't freeze well), etc. As a first time mom making baby food, it was worth it.
Looks like a pretty good book.......2007-07-27
I haven't tried this cookbook but did read through it. The recipes look rather simple and still flavorful, but there are no pictures, nor does it tell you if each prepared meal can be frozen (like other books I have). I think it's going to be a great reference but probably won't be as popular for me to use as Annabel Karmel's "Top 100 Baby Purees." I look forward to giving it a try and think the recipes will probably be tasty.

Explicit.......2007-08-23
This book has very explicit information for women whom really want to get the body they've dreamed!!
it's easy to following the instructions...
easy exercise.......2007-08-18
i found this book very easy to follow and especially liked the routine. each day was alittle different and took about 20 minutes to complete.
Disappointing if you already own the previous edition.......2007-07-24
Conflicting information on the same page. On the left column it states that the best time to work out is as soon as you wake up in the morning. But a box in the right column says to avoid weight training right after you wake up and that it may be dangerous to do so. Uh, aren't these workouts 50% weight training?
The nutrition information can best be described as "confusing." It seems to be in no particular order. There are 700-800 calorie protein shake recipes listed right after the guidelines outlining 4-5 small meals per day totaling 1200-1500 calories. One serving of soy per day is recommended for women, but no soy products are mentioned on the food choice lists. Diets for fat loss and muscle gain are provided, but absolutely NO information about maintenance. Worst of all, the authors seem to encourage us to eliminate all fruit from our diets unless we "can't live without them."
The previous edition was much more clearly written. The DVD would be good for someone who has never seen proper form demonstrated. All in all, save your $$$. If you have the previous edition, you will get more from other books and magazines. Definitely look elsewhere for nutrition advice.
Great book if you are a die hard athlete.......2007-07-18
I ended up sending this book back. I just wanted something to help me tone and tighten, but this is more for someone who wants to be really buff. Instead I bought Buff Brides, and mix that up with Pilates. Seems to be working!
Good for beginners.......2007-06-22
If you're new to weight training this is a good book to start. This book includes nutrtion information, and of course, excercises. There are a lot of excercises on machines, which is nice, but I would have been more impressed if there were more things using free-weights or incorporating bosus or balance balls.

Playboy: Fifty Years : The Photographs
ASIN: 0811856801 |
Book Description
From Marilyn Monroe to Cindy Crawford, Linda Evans to Farrah Fawcett, Playboy has celebrated the sensuality (and even launched a few careers) of celebrities for more than fifty years. Here, in all their glory, are over 150 breathtaking photographs of the magazine's most famous heavenly bodies. Celebrity models such as Naomi Campbell and Stephanie Seymour, Playmates Jenny McCarthy and Pamela Anderson, rockers such as Debbie Harry, and many more reveal all posing for equally renowned photographers such as Herb Ritts and David LaChapelle. With an introduction by Hugh Hefner himself and an afterword by Gary Cole, the magazine's director of photography for the past 30 years, this definitive collection from Playboy is a potent portfolio of celebrity nudes.
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre.......2007-08-09
There isn't a table of contents, though there is an index in the back of the book. Perhaps Playboy knew that its list of celebrities would be largely unimpressive?
Maybe I'm just too young. Maybe the ubiquity of modern websites like SuicideGirls and Mr. Skin (the new go-to place for celebrity nudity) have caused my generation to take Playboy's achievements for granted.
Regardless, the list itself seems unimpressive.
But the photos are nice enough (though it isn't exactly difficult to make a celebrity look good), and Playboy certainly deserves credit for creating such a foolproof franchise.
Well done and worth having.......2007-05-13
If you grew up in the 70's like I did and you were trying to project an image of cool and hip you read Playboy. Besides the great photography there were well written articles on politics and mens lifestyle issues that just weren't available anywhere else. And the special treat of having a glimpse of a favorite celeb partially nude made reading the articles less important for that particular issue and almost guaranteed it would become a collectable item. Many of the photos are mild to say the least by today's standards but still demonstrate the high quality photography that I believe always set Playboy apart from the rest.
This book is full of the same high quality images anyone who has followed the magazine would expect to see and some of us will even remember when some of the models first appeared. I was hoping to see a few more of my favorites, but hey there's always the next volume and as long as Mr. Hefner's name is on the masthead we'll have to trust him to pick the subjects and I'm very comfortable with that. If you ever liked Playboy and/or ever collected any of their compilation volumes this one is surely worth having.
Sadly disappointed.......2007-01-19
The book promised more than it delivered. I am tempted to return for my money back.
nice variety.......2007-01-09
I bought this for an early Christmas gift for my fiance' and we both love it. There's a sampling of all kinds in here - from young to older, earthy to, well, Pamela, and dated to modern.
What there is is very good, but incomplete.......2007-01-09
This is a high quality book with many beautiful images. While there are a number of women here that are most famous for being Playmates, they are also women who legitimately had some celebrity outside of the magazine (movies and/or TV). But as others have said, there are many "A List" celebrities that didn't make it into this volume. We can only hope they'll be a "Volume 2" in the future.

Global perhaps, commentary, not!.......2006-07-12
I bought this book to review as a potential classroom text.
It is a jumble of ways to misuse the Bible to support modern revisionist theology.
According to this book, inclusiveness, cultural relativism and subjective morality are the primary message of the Bible.
Other topics which pass for biblical commentary include Interclass power struggles, feminist identity and the misogynist patriarchal society, liberation theology, etc
My opinion...
Unless you are really interested in far left apologetics, save your money.
