Absolutely the Best!.......2007-07-06
I found this book in the attic of our old apartment, before I could even read English. I fell in love with the book then, because I guided myself through the book's gorgeous illustrations. When I finally did learn to read in English, it was even more magical. I carried this book (torn pages and all) for 13 years everywhere I moved until one day, I spotted the bookcover's color out of the corner of my eye at a bookstore---I was ecstatic! It was still in print! Since then, I've purchased well over 100 copies to give away to every child or baby I know. If you ever buy a book for a child--boy or girl---this is the one they should have. It's not only utterly beautiful, but it's story is powerful!
A Heartwarming Tale of Courage and Compassion!.......2007-05-17
I've loved this book for nearly 50 years.... my children loved it, too. It's the story of a little "country bunny" who has high aspirations - to be the next Easter Bunny. Despite all odds, and with the help of her little (?!) family, she braves gigantic obstacles to prove that she has what it takes: she's courageous, swift, and kind. It's beautifully written, and the illustrations capture the tenderness of the story. Reading it will affirm that goodness and compassion can provide the strength to achieve what may seem impossible!
The Counntry Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes.......2007-05-13
This was the first book I checked out at the library as a first grader.
I wanted my grannybabies to know a little about Grannymaw; when she was little....
Fabulous!.......2007-04-10
I read this book in the early 70's for the first time and now give it away as gifts. It's a wonderful Easter story that encourages little girls to dream big dreams! The drawings are artful, the colors are memorable and the story is very sweet. I enjoy giving it to others as much as I loved having it read to me as a child.
A True Working Mother.......2007-04-03
A Classic. This book was written prior to the Women's Lib movement but wow, does it ever celebrate women, especially mothers. How refreshing to read and what an unusual perspective on the hard-working
Easter Bunny

Book Description
Pinkerton Pig always has to be first -- first to eat, first off the bus -- until, running to be first for a sandwich, he finds himself in trouble with the Sand Witch.
Customer Reviews:
A parent favorite.......2006-11-26
A cleverly written book with a great moral, but probably too old for my 3-year old to completely appreciate. But it's my favorite and I'll continue reading it until my kids are old enough to appreciate the lesson and the clever writing.
Great Moral.......2006-11-22
This is a great book for kids of all ages. I read it to my fourth graders the first day of every school year, and this year I bought copies for all of the other fourth grade teachers. Pinkerton always has to be first, until his greed teaches him a lesson that allows him to happily take the last seat on the bus.
I Would Care For a Sand Witch!.......2006-06-30
Many years ago, my school librarian read this book to my kindergarden class. I cannot speak for my peers, but I, for one, loved this story. I liked that it had a dynamic protagonist who clearly learns from his mistake to improve upon his greedy mannerisms. I was so afraid of the evil Sand Witch at first and I was worried the pig would never escape! But then I realized she was actually generously teaching him a lesson that would make him a better person... err, pig. Furthermore, this book was my first encounter with a good pun, and I have been developing a healthy appreciation for them ever since. So get out your credit card and have this charming tale shipped to your sty right away!
Pretty cute.......2006-03-10
Cute book, a bit too much pushiness and not enough lesson, but cute.
A moral and fun word play.......2005-11-13
This is a cute little book, and Pinkerton the pig is a good character. The moral of the story can't be argued with. The word play of "sandwich" and "Sandwitch" is clever. I like the idea of the pig learning what it means to care for someone, too. My child got tired of it quickly; however, it's an inexpensive book. Fine for preschoolers and beginning readers.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource.......2007-06-25
My grandma originally owned a copy of this book and regularly noted sightings of interesting/rare species. I bought my own copy several years ago and it has proved quite useful. The most interesting example was a Java Sparrow sighted in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I couldn't find out what it was from searching around online, but looking in the back of this field guide, under foreign/introduced species, there it was.
Quality Through and Through.......2005-10-11
I received this book as a gift and have used it constantly. I keep it on my window sill during the feeding season to identify the visiters to my feeder. The book's size and physical construction are excellent. As someone who is a novice it seems to be very comprehensive on the subject matter.
The birder's bible.......2005-07-19
Even when I lived in the city, I liked to feed and watch the birds (mainly sparrows and pigeons). Now that we live up in the woods, we're in bird paradise. Using this Peterson Field Guide for "Eastern Birds" plus a good pair of binoculars for visual identifications, and the "Birding by Ear Eastern/Central" CDs (Richard K. Walton and Robert W. Lawson) I've identified 42 species of birds in just over a month, as a casual observer for the Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas II project.
I have other bird books, but it is Peterson's Field Guide that I use most frequently. Roger Tory Peterson's 'system' "is based on patternistic drawings with arrows that pinpoint the key field marks." You don't have to have the bird in hand in order to make an identification. In addition to 136 full-color plates of Eastern birds (male, female, and immature, or summer and winter plumage if they differ markedly), there are also 390 three-color maps (first introduced in the 1980 edition).
The maps are absolutely essential for an amateur like me. If I've narrowed down a blurry little gray bird to X and Y, and Y never makes it north of the Mason-Dixon Line, I can be pretty certain that the bird is X. Here's an actual example on the utility of the maps: I was trying to distinguish a trilling song that could either belong to the Swamp Sparrow, the Pine Warbler, or the Northern Junco. We do see Juncos at our feeders in the winter, but this is July and according to Peterson's map, the Juncos spend the summer north of here, mostly in Canada. So I've narrowed the trill down to the Swamp Sparrow or the Pine Warbler (actually I'm positive we've got both as I've made tentative visual identifications. It makes sense since we live in the Pine Barrens which is dotted with numerous swamps).
This book begins with a generalized introduction to identifying birds by shape, distinctive features and behavior. Physically, it is tightly bound and just the right size to slip into a backpack. The pages are glossy and 'relatively' waterproof if you wipe them quickly dry. There is even a 'life list' up front where you can check off the birds you have seen.
Don't go birding without it.
Excellent beginner book for myself and my sister........1999-04-26
The Peterson field Guide to Eastern American Birds turned out to be the best birding book I've ever read. The book was well thought out and had the format that we needed in our suburban environment. The illustrations were concise and made identifying the birds extremely easy. We have a large population of Red-Winged Blackbirds and Mourning Doves, and its great to actually know what in the world we were looking at. It was great!
Excellent guide to identification of birds........1998-05-13
This is the best of the field guides for the amature birder in my opinion. I purchased a guide that had actual photos of birds in their habitats, thinking it would be the best, but it definately was not as good or as easy to use as the Peterson field guide. If you are looking for a good all around field guide to keep near your binoculars, this one is my pick.

The Gothic cathedral is one of humanity's greatest masterpieces--an architectural feast that couldn't help but attract the attention of renowned author-illustrator David Macaulay. Once an architectural student at the Rhode Island School of Design, Macaulay glories in the intricacies and beauty of structure, as evidenced in his masterful pen-and-ink drawings in critically acclaimed children's books such as Castle, Pyramid, and Rome Antics. He begins Cathedral in 1252, when the people of a fictitious French town named Chutreaux decide to build a cathedral after their existing church is struck by lightning. We first meet the craftspeople, then examine the tools, study their cathedral plans, and watch the laying of the foundation. Week by week we witness the construction of this glorious temple to God. Macaulay intuitively hones in on the details about which we are the most curious: How were those enormously high ceilings built and decorated? How were those 60-foot-high windows made and installed in the 13th century? And how did people haul those huge, heavy bells up into the skyscraper-high towers? Thanks to Macaulay's thorough, thoughtful tribute to the Gothic cathedral, not a stone, turret, or pane of stained glass is left unexamined or unexplained. (Ages 9 and older) --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Text and detailed drawings follow the planning and construction of a magnificent Gothic cathedral in the imaginary French town of Chutreaux during the thirteenth century.

Macaulay's books.......2007-01-20
This book lives up to my expectations of David Macaulay's books in that it's very well drawn, has an abundant amount of useful information and is presented in a clear, exciting manner!
Another Macaulay Masterpiece.......2006-11-23
Second only to his magnum opus, Castle, this 1981 book continues David Macaulay's tradition of creating intricate (but welcoming and friendly) illustrations as an accompaniment to the telling of his informative tales. Taking its place in a grand series that has included Pyramid, Mill, Castle, Unbuilding, and others, Cathedral details the design and creation of one of the great Gothic churches that came to exist across western Europe during the Age of Faith. The setting here is France during the intellectually-towering High Middle Ages, and in careful steps we come to understand firstly what motivated people to undertake a construction project on such a scale, secondly how the construction was carried out, and finally how a Gothic cathedral, truly a structure that seems to soar untethered to earth, is able to stand so proudly close to a millennium after its dedication. Most marvelously of all, unlike virtually every other Medieval building, the great worship places are still largely in use today, fulfilling their original purposes and continuing on as a tribute to and testimony of the genius of those who erected them. David Macaulay is a master and a treasure, and a book like his teaches without effort. Like all great things, his books are joys to re-visit over the course of a lifetime.
An excellent masterpiece!.......2006-02-01
Words are useless to describe this masterpiece created by David Macaulay.
I have visited France (more specifically Paris, Rheims, Chartres, Chambord, Versailles, Chenonceau) and went on a "cathedral pilgrimage" to see all the greatest French gothic cathedrals.
After picking up this book in my local library, I was spellbound by the beauty of Macaulay's drawings. Macaulay is able to recreate the majesticness and grandeur of the cathedrals and draws you into the cathedral. You can almost hear the cathedral choir singing in the backround and the quite chanting of the people.
Macaulay's drawings are first rate (no wonder this masterpiece won the Caldacot Medal!)
This book should be read by everyone to show what people can achieve through determination and having a united goal.
This just occurred to me.... why do man's most significant and most beautiful works of art and architecture result from their religion?
David Macaulay's book is pure gold! BUY THIS BOOK, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!
spellbinding for children and adults alike.......2005-08-12
Like all of Macaulay's architectural books, CATHEDRAL is ripe with vivid illustrations that are both enthralling and educational to behold. The drawings not only illustrate the cathedral's method of construction, but convey the presence and majesty of the space as well. One feels the dizzying height of the tower and the formidable strength of the foundation stones. I was always amazed at the ingenuity of the laborers in completing tasks that I would have otherwise felt impossible to attemp without power tools.
While it is hard to predict whether today's children will find the book as captivating as I did in the pre-internet era, I feel that David Macaulay's books make excellent gifts to children. Not only do they stimulate the imagination, but they educate children on architecture, history and culture, and show that magnificent works can be accomplished through cooperation, creativity, planning and hard work. Not bad for a few bucks! I recommend you splurge on the hardback, because this is a book you'll enjoy literally for decades.
A wonderful introduction to architecture and the Middle Ages.......2004-01-10
Having just finished a great book called "Great Cathedrals", filled with 400 pages of jaw-dropping photographs, I kept wondering how in the world they could have built such marvelous edifices with rudimentary implements over 800 years ago. David Macaulay's "Cathedral" is a book ostensibly written for children but which will fascinate readers of all ages. In scarcely 80 pages, Macaulay takes us back in time to the year 1252 in the fictional French village of Chutreaux where the people decide to build the "longest, widest, highest and most beautiful cathedral in all of France" for the glory of God. Macaulay's text is minimal, but his exquisite black and white line drawings say it all: the step-by-step stages in the building's construction, the craftsmen and the tools they used, and the dedication that kept this project going for 80 years until its completion. We feel a sense of awe at the dedication of the original architects and craftsmen and builders who knew that they would be long dead before the cathedral was finally finished. Macaulay's glossary at the end of the book helps us to understand the major elements of the Gothic cathedral, and his cross-sections and diagrams provide clear illustration of just how the cathedral rose from its foundations. At the end of this volume, we share the awe and pride the townspeople felt at having shared a goal for over 80 years and making it a reality. Macaulay's "Cathedral" is a marvelous creation in more ways than one.

Book Description
When Helen Finney feeds alphabet soup to her dog, Martha, it goes straight up to her brain, and Martha begins to speak! But having a talking dog isn't always as much fun as it seems.
Customer Reviews:
Gently humorous.......2006-09-28
Downing a bowl of alphabet soup the family dog comes up wordy in Susan Meddaugh's gently funny picture book. Friendly illustrations will soon have sympathetic kids relating their own version as Martha wears out her wonder with incessant chatter.
Very Funny for Dog Lovers.......2006-07-28
I bought this book as a gift for a 5 year old, but found the humor to be a bit more sophisticated. My 9 year old son (& dog lover) found it to be hilarious. It will become a favorite gift of mine to give children in the 7-9 age bracket.
a talking dog!.......2004-08-30
Kids love the idea of a talking dog, and Martha's story is amusing, as she develops the ability to speak after eating alphabet soup and then drives her family mad with her nonstop talking (except during her own televisioin shows, of course). It's unfortunate that the family eventually collectively yell at Martha to "SHUT UP!" but we just talk about the inappropriateness of the family's response, even when they're frustrated. Eventually they resolve the situation when Martha proves to be brave, intelligent and lucky during an encounter with a burglar. A bit loopy but kids love it/
Good book for kids.......2004-08-29
At first I thought this was a good book, and was going to give it five stars, but then there was a big SHUT UP which wasn't really appropriate. And then there was a burglar which might be scary for kids, but it also taught you to dial 911 if something bad like the burgler happens, and it showed that Martha felt bad after her family yelled SHUT UP to her, so it kind of taught you not to yell SHUT UP, so I put it back up to 5 stars.
Speak, girl!.......2004-05-07
Warning: By reading this book to your children you may be inadvertently encouraging them to force-feed their puppies alphabet soup. Creating a book that is as much comic strip as it is enjoyable picture book, Susan Meddaugh's enjoyable 1992 creation follows the adventures and misadventures of Martha the talking pup. After being fed a bowl of delicious alphabet soup, Martha, the family pet, begins talking in complete grammatically correct sentences. For the family, this new occurrence is initially a boon. Martha is able to explain all kinds of doggish mysteries, hitherto unexplained to humans. She answers the door to the pizza delivery girl, much to family's amusement. She amazes both family and friends. Unfortunately, there are downsides to owning a talking dog. Martha, once she learns how to dial the phone, is prone to ordering large quantities of barbecue beef. She doesn't understand such social niceties as not commenting on someone's appearance loudly in pubic (especially if that someone is fat). And she talks constantly about nothing at all. When the family finally proclaims that Martha's talking is too much, the humbled doggie falls into a deep depression and refuses to devour anymore alphabet soup. Fortunately the appearance of a nasty burglar in the home gives Martha the opportunity to save the day and reinstate herself as the family's favorite talking dog.
The book's an original, no question. Martha's constant chatter appears as speech balloons over her head. If you get this edition in hardback, I highly recommend that you flip to the author's photo on the back inside cover to see a picture of a dog that looks very much as if it might have been the inspiration for Martha's cuddly form. The illustrations are sweet and inticing and Martha says everything you'd expect a dog to say (if neutered). The double page spread of her blowing away the family with an incredibly long speech is particularly impressive. I suspect that if you were to read this book to your little one they would insist that you read every single word that pops out of Martha's mouth. All things considered, this might take some time so prepare to set aside some 20 minutes for a full and unabridged reading of the delightful "Martha Speaks". As for the use of the term, "shut up", (which the family yells at Martha when they canst takes it no more) this is left entirely up to the reader's discretion. If you live in a home where the phrase is considered impolite, you may wish to read it aloud from the book in a silly way, or simply disguise it as the less controversial "Be Quiet" (which I do not, personally, endorse). If this phrase is not considered impolite in your home, let rip and let go.
This is altogether a fine book and an amusing story. This is an excellent choice for those children interested in the intricacies of canine yabbering.

If you have a quirky kid..............2007-08-22
My son from an early age marched to a beat of a different drummer. We discovered this book when he was 5, and it was a great thing in his life. I was recently asked to name the most influential non-religious book in our lives and believe it or not this was it. Tacky helped our son believed that there was a place in the world for both the straight-laced run-of-the-mill kids and the more creative types. He is leaving to college today, his third year , and I just had to write this review in thanks. Our son has a lot of self-esteem and this book helped him find it. If you have a quirky kid, this book is a must. If you have a 'normal' kid, but they have a quirky friend this is a good book too, because it doesn't put down either sets of people, or penguins as the case may be. We of course have the whole book memorized and can make any of us smile by starting any of the phases in the book. If we save one of the children's books in our library, Tacky would be by FAR it.
Makes a GREAT Play!.......2007-06-07
My little sister was "Tacky" in a school play in about 4th(?) grade. (they put it on for the little kids) Now we're grown and have kids of our own and NEED this book because it's ingrained in our heads... Gotta love TACKY!
Tacky the Penguin.......2007-05-30
I adore Tacky the Penguin! It has a wonderful message about just being yourself: unique and different is OK! Even Hawaiian shirts are OK on the right bird. I especially love how he marches -- a very funny rhythm. There are many other subthemes about friendship, bravery, courage, acceptance, etc. Of course the hunters/trappers are the bad guys, but they are goofy, and not scary for very young children.
He's one Tacky penguin........2007-03-20
Do you adore penguins, especially funny ones? Well, Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester is the book for you! Tacky the Penguin is a book about a penguin that's nothing like the others, but in the end he saves everyone. I bet that even adults would laugh at this wonderful book.
This book is filled with the best illustrations ever. Well, at least from my point of view, just the pictures would make you laugh! I really like the way the book ended. It proves no one has to follow the pack. That's what makes me feel so nicely about the book. I recommended the book for even senior citizens!
Something else unique about this book is that it basically says that even if you're a pest, you're a good person to have around. But really, the book could have been longer. It's just so short not many events happen. Of course it showed the right amount, but I really would want to see Tacky having fun with other penguins.
From sad to mad, this book still makes emotional kids have a good laugh and a good reading time. Even I can't stop reading Tacky the Penguin over and over. Nothing is really wrong with the book. I mean of course it had some errors. Of course it could've been longer. Beside that, it's a great book. I love this book!
In the end, Tacky doesn't try to fit in with the other penguins to be loved. His humor does that for him. I would recommend this book for ages one to ninety nine! Anybody would love the book Tacky the Penguin. It's a perfect mix of humor and a good moral!

In the end, Tacky doesn't try to fit in with the other penguins to be loved. His humor does that for him. I would recommend this book for ages one to ninety nine! Anybody would love the book Tacky the Penguin. It's a perfect mix of humor and a good moral!

Sheep on a Ship.......2007-08-11
Great series for early childhood. Good basic rhyming vocabulary clearly illustrated with humorous characters. Good to read to now and read alone later.
sheep book.......2007-03-29
Wish you knew the "fail safe classics"? The sheep books are IT!
Love it!.......2004-01-20
I have loved the book Sheep Out Eat by Nancy Shaw since I was little and my Mom read it to me, so a few years ago when I found this book in a store I was very exicited. This book is cute and funny and even though I am 14 I still love to read it!
Sheep on a ship.......2003-09-26
The book "Sheep on a ship" is about some sheep that try to sail. The book shows you what happens when sheep try to sail. The sheep have a rough ride but in the end everything looks up for them. The story really doesn't have a lesson except that you shouldn't let your sheep try to sail. I don't think everybody could read this story; it should be read to kids the age of one to two.
OK.......2003-07-21
I guess I like the "Sheep in a Jeep" and "Sheep Out to Eat" books a little better than this one. Maybe I've just grown a little tired of them? I wish I could have given it 3.5 stars. I would give the others in the series a 4.

Absolutely Fantabulous.......2007-10-08
I read this book when I was a child and LOVED it. I remember the thrill of seeing that HUGE loaf of bread and the jam. Sent my imagination soaring. Then there was the satisfying end to the bees (I was terrified of bees as a child so you can imagine how thrilled I was at the end. =D) I think it was my most favorite childhood book.
I found this book in the library some years ago and shared it with my son (now 12). I've just bought it to share with my younger son...and my older one is THRILLED. =D We both can't wait for it to arrive.
My favorite children's book.......2007-07-08
This was my favorite book when I was a kid, and now my son asks for "Sandwich" as well. I started reading it to him when he was 6 weeks old. We had to take a break to board books when he was in his eat books and turn their pages roughly phase, but now he appreciates having this book read to him. I and my parents, and one day my kids, all know the words by heart. You won't get sick of reading it either. Since I have the words memorized, I can look at the pictures, and even after reading it so many times, I keep finding new details in the pictures!
The Giant Jam Sandwich.......2007-03-12
This is a wonderful rhyming book fun to read and kids love it. This is the second one I have given away.
Nothing better than a jam sandwich!.......2007-03-08
I got this book at our local library book sale. It quickly became a bedtime favorite due to its rhythm and rhyme. A truly small-town problem with a truly small-town solution. What a delight! The best 25 cents I ever spent!
I loved this book when I was a child, now my little girl loves it too!.......2007-02-11
What can I say? This is an enchanting, beautifully rhymed book with fabulous pictures. I know it off by heart and my little girl wants me to read it to her over and over again.

Book Description
Derek really liked me -- at least, he acted that way. I liked him too at first, but it lasted only a few weeks before he was getting on my nerves. And once I break it off with a guy, I don't even want to see him anymore. For a while I feel like I don't want to see any guys anymore, but that doesn't last long either.
Sandpiper Hollow Ragsdale has a bad reputation. At first she just wanted a boyfriend, but now she's had a dozen and doesn't know what she saw in any of them. When one of Sandy's exes, Derek, starts harassing her, a mysterious boy called the Walker comes to her aid. Walker spends his days wandering through town. When Sandy begins to walk with him, he evades her questions, unwilling to reveal anything about himself. She's interested but wary -- why is Walker so secretive? As Derek's aggressions turn dangerous, Sandy and Walker are forced to confront the pain of their pasts, which each of them would rather forget.
Ellen Wittlinger's powerful story of two people struggling to overcome personal demons exemplifies why School Library Journal said that her writing "conveys a fundamental truth" and that she "evokes caring in readers and gives them plenty to think about."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent novel for teens who have just reached puberty.......2007-10-14
I disagree with people who think that younger teens should not read this book. They are the ones who should read it - both girls and boys.
If you search online for "percentage teens sex," you will learn that about 1 in 3 or 4 teens have had oral sex by the time they leave middle school, often casually, like playing spin the bottle.
Sandpiper shows, in a powerful and nonjudgmental way, all the dangers of casual sex. It also shows how a true friendship can develop between a girl and a boy.
Sandpiper.......2007-10-01
Ellen Wittlinger is one of the greatest YA authors, in my opinion. I read Hard Love (which is excellent) and now I've read Sandpiper. It definitely wasn't as good as Hard Love, but there's just something about the way that Piper's life is portrayed that really draws me in. It seems realistic, and I'm so intrigued by the way her mind works. She's different from me, but she's still the type of character I look for in a book. I can be sympathetic to how she feels, but at the same time I disagree with her opinions
Okay Read.......2007-02-06

Learning to live with the past.......2006-11-20
Sandpiper, by Ellen Wittlinger is a story about a girl named Sandpiper who is notorious for her short term, unattached relationships and for her need to get the attention of boys to feel valued and important. After one of her ex-boyfriend becomes violent, Sandpiper decides to change her lifestyle and to forget about her past. In her struggle to do this, she accidentally meets a boy named Walker, who, because of a mysterious past, lives without a family or home. As their friendship grows, Sandpiper discovers his hidden guilt over the accidental death of a young girl and the reason for his isolation. She realizes that Walker's inability to accept his past is what made him alone and through this knowledge, Sandpiper is able to live with her own past and help Walker come to terms with his.
I liked how it was a cautionary tale about teen sex without being too preachy........2005-11-20
I enjoyed this story. I liked how it was a cautionary tale about teen sex without being too preachy. I identified with the characters and liked how dimensional they were especially the ones I least expected like Daisy, Rachel and Edie. I wanted to know more about Derek's craziness he was a little too dimensional. One of my favorite aspects of this book was Piper's use of poetry and how she mimicked famous styles. I liked that Piper wrote poetry. One problem with this book though, it felt like too much was going on, with Aidan, the wedding, the issues with friends, parents, Piper's own sexuality, Rachel's, Daisy's, there was a lot going on in such a small book. It felt at times over dramatized and then in key moments not dramatic enough. I like this book but.....

cute culture marriage and comparison.......2007-04-20
very cute story about differences in American and japanese food etiquette, utensils, etc and overcoming differences to end in a marriage of cultures...a little questionable about the age of the girl who is dating an American sailor...but otherwise a cute story..(back then, not uncommon to get married young....)
charming.......2007-03-27
my daughter has dozens, hundreds......SO many books......and yet she asks for me to read this one over and over again.....there is some simple sweet charm about it......and tonight, she read it to me.......i think part of the sweetness of it is the child's perspective of the parents' relationship.......i can't think of another book where a child tells about the parents falling in love.....it is unique and charming.....
Great Book.......2007-01-14
This story is sweet and a great way to teach children about culture. No matter what culture you are you can learn to get along.
Beware the Overt Generalities.......2006-03-02
It's helpful that this story is from a child's point of view, but it does not excuse the generalizations. Use it as a reference - as social authentication - of multi-ethnic relationships, but it is a dated work that carries the overt stereotypes of the time. Dress, behaviors, and erroneous beliefs mark the story.
an appreciation for both japanese and american culture.......2005-12-02
In How My Parents Learned to Eat, the author takes us on a journey to Japan in which an American sailor meets a Japanese high school girl. The narrator of the story is their daughter and she starts off saying, "In our house, some days we eat with chopsticks and some days we eat with knives and forks. For me, it's natural." The book illustrates the cultural differences and similarities of Japanese and Americans. John, the American sailor desperately wants to invite Aiko, the Japanese schoolgirl to dinner. However he is afraid since he does not know how to use chopsticks. Aiko, thinks that John is ashamed of asking her to dinner since she does not know how to use a fork and knife. Both secretly learn how to eat in each other's ways.
This book presents a very good view of life and culture in Japan (and some of America) while also introducing young children into basic table manners. We learn in the book the precise way to eat with spoons, knives, and forks, and we also learn the basics for using chopsticks. The culture of Japan is fully shown as well from all the signs being written in traditional Japanese characters to the mentioning of traditional clothes (the kimono). We are also introduced into how Asians drink soup-they drink from the bowl, which here in the United States would be considered inappropriate. Pictures of Japanese food and what they are called are also introduced to young children. The differences in how Americans and Japanese greet people are also touched upon as well. However what I liked most was the illustrations of the first and last pages of the book. The first page depicts their daughter in traditional Japanese clothing eating Japanese food with chopsticks, and with a rice cooker behind her. The last page of the book shows her in Western clothing eating steak and mashed potatoes with a toaster behind her. By this the book demonstrates an appreciation for both cultures.
