Book Description

This first-ever fully annotated edition of one of the most beloved novels in the world is a sheer delight for Jane Austen fans. Here is the complete text of Pride and Prejudice with more than 2,300 annotations on facing pages, including:

Explanations of historical context
Rules of etiquette, class differences, the position of women, legal and economic realities, leisure activities, and more.

Citations from Austen’s life, letters, and other writings
Parallels between the novel and Austen’s experience are revealed, along with writings that illuminate her beliefs and opinions.

Definitions and clarifications
Archaic words, words still in use whose meanings have changed, and obscure passages are explained.

Literary comments and analyses
Insightful notes highlight Austen’s artistry and point out the subtle ways she develops her characters and themes.

Maps and illustrations
of places and objects mentioned in the novel.

An introduction, a bibliography, and a detailed chronology of events

Of course, one can enjoy the novel without knowing the precise definition of a gentleman, or what it signifies that a character drives a coach rather than a hack chaise, or the rules governing social interaction at a ball, but readers of The Annotated Pride and Prejudice will find that these kinds of details add immeasurably to understanding and enjoying the intricate psychological interplay of Austen’s immortal characters.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable addition to P&P library.......2007-09-08

If you love P&P, as I do, and have the book and the films, this will be an excellent addition to your library. It was fun to read the story, slowly, following the annotations as I went. Mr Shapard brings in all kinds of pertinent information about dress, customs, manners, idioms, locations, methods of travel and distances, psychology, etc. Many of the comments are, of course, the editor's interpretations of behavior or thought but all are reasonable.

I may not reference the book again but I am delighted to have it in my P&P collection. It is a job very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Annotated text opens up your understanding.......2007-09-06

I won't bother to tell you that the text is wonderful, and Jane Austen a keen observer of human nature. You know that. I will say that the annotations in this edition are very helpful for those of us that don't know the differences between a chaise, a phaeton, and a barrouche, that didn't know that morning lasted until dinner, that tea was had between dinner and supper, or that quadrille was a card game, not a dance.

Yes, they are a bit repetitious. I don't see a justification for this, since no one is going to miss the first instance by dipping into the text randomly. And they do contain too many hints about what is about to happen. These notes could just as easily have been placed just after the scene as before it, and still be illuminating to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Pride & Prejudice, you'll love this book.......2007-08-16

It will become a truth universally acknowledged that this book is destined to be a favorite among the lovers of "P&P." The depth of understanding it adds to the novel is wonderful. It defines words and phrases which have changed meaning, untangles the sentences which, at least from a contemporary view, are sometimes difficult to grasp, and clarifies the social niceties of Miss Austen's time. BEWARE, SPOILER ALERT: if you've never read "P&P" you may wish to skip the annotations first time around, since some of them give away plot points.

5 out of 5 stars Great for a first time reader........2007-07-21

This book is the first Jane Austen novel that I have read. I found the annotations to be very helpful in understanding the cultural context of the novel, explaining antiquated customs and character motivations. Austen makes reference to other books of the era, and the editor elaborates on the background and significance of them.

Having the annotations opposite the text on the facing page is very convenient and it's easy to read every one. I did not find the annotations to be overly redundant.

I wish that the editor had more annotated Austen works, but having read this one, I'll have an easier time understanding the other novels.

5 out of 5 stars Annotating Jane Austen.......2007-07-17

Like many, I've read Pride & Prejudice a number of times. This annotated version forced me to slow down, and I noticed things that slipped by me in other readings (P&P is a "page turner" after all; like a good thriller you want to keep reading). Who knew, for example, that there was "cross-dressing" in Jane Austen? (Lydia and Mrs. Forster dressed Chamberlayne up as a woman and he "passed" for a lady until the ladies laughed). My approach was to read the annotations for a chapter before reading the chapter and then browsing through them again as I read the chapter; this helped me to avoid getting too headache-y from shifting between text and annotation. I would take issue with a few of his interpretations, but they are only minor quibbles. And I agree there was a lot of repetition, especially of word meanings. I especially appreciated the extra comments in the concluding chapter from her letters, on the future fates of Kitty and Mary and others. This is well worth reading if you are interested in a slightly deeper look at P&P. Too soon to say, but my hope is that the next time I read P&P (sans notes), I will enjoy it more than ever.

Book Description

The only wide-open space Rance McKettrick wants to see in his future is his hometown in his rearview mirror. The down-to-earth ex-rancher is determined to make a fresh start with his two young daughters—and leave his heartbreaking loss and family's successful corporation far behind.

He sure doesn't need Indian Rock's free-spirited new bookstore owner Echo Wells confusing his choices—and raising memories he'd rather forget. But her straightforward honesty and reluctance to trust is challenging everything Rance thought he knew about himself. And when their irresistible attraction puts their hearts on the line, Rance and Echo must come to grips with who they really are to find a once-in-a-lifetime happiness.

3 out of 5 stars Good, not great........2007-07-16

I picked this book up because every now and then I need to fuel my inner Marlborough Man fantasies, and I love a good contemporary western for that. I had not read the first book in the trilogy, or any of this author's other books. This book stands on its own, and I was not the least bit confused in getting caught up with who was who. Both characters were sympathetic, and there was a nice smattering of extended family members and a surprisingly good subplot involving a dog (and I am NOT an animal lover, but this storyline was actually quite important to illuminating the heroine's journey and character.)

What I really didn't like was the COUNTLESS references to this author's earlier books.... She seems to have included a reference to at least 6 or 8 earlier couples.... people who had lived hundreds of years ago. Every time the current hero & heroine pass a school house, we get a reference to "that was where my great-great granddaddy built his bride a school" Or shop. Or house. Or swimming hole. It went on and on and on. I actually found it a little sad. I don't like to think of H&H's being long-dead, although the author solved this problem by suggesting that they were all ghosts and had been seen riding on the range or laughing in the bedrooms. Puleease. Maybe I would not have minded if I'd read all those books, but the references interferred with my ability to enjoy this story and seemed very contrived.

Aside from that, it was a nice, average story...more about lust than love. The author did a terrific job exploring the hero's torment about his dead-wife and the emotional grappling he had to do to emerge from it. I especially liked the way the hero freely admits his initial attraction to Echo was just lust. The problem was that I never really saw any reason for that to evolve into love. At one point, the hero simply decides he loves her.... but I never really sensed any chemistry between them other than hot sex.

4 out of 5 stars great one!.......2007-05-31

this story is better than mckettrick's luck. really enjoyed this story, can't wait to read the next one. am on the fence with linda lael miller. most of the stories i love, but i think the sex is a little raunchy. i tend to glaze over those parts. she is definitely one of the smut-ier romance writers i read. if you like linda lael i do suggest jodi thomas and lorraine heath, they're two of my fav's.

4 out of 5 stars McKettrick's Pride.......2007-05-22

Good book- enjoyed the references to the McKettrick cowboys, the sons of Angus, and their descendants who are very similar in character. The modern MCkettrick men are just as lovable!

5 out of 5 stars Unputdownable!.......2007-05-19

It's really a toss up for me which of the McKettrick stories I liked the best. I loved them all. Rance McKettrick is a widower with two small girls and a meddling mother-in-law. He's all business in his three piece suits, no fun, no sense of humor and travels all over the world leaving his daughters behind, troubled by how his marriage was less than perfect when his wife died. Then Echo Wells, a hippy from Chicago whizzes into town in her little pink bug and nearly runs him down. Completely mismatched, it's both compelling and touching how Miller brings these two together. You won't want to miss any of these books. They're all so good they're hard to put down. I loved the dialogue, the humor, the witty way these stories were put together. Excellent reads!

5 out of 5 stars Book #2 in this Trilogy Set.......2007-05-07

WOW! What a wonderful romance. Loved it! Well written and moves right along. I think a good romance book has to include a female main character that I could be friends with and a male main character that could win my heart (figuratively). Well, this book has both of those. Love how this author weaves animals into her stories. I'm an animal lover who also lives on a ranch! I read this book in one day and went right on to book #3, but that's a different review. p.s. steamy!

Elizabeth Bennet is the perfect Austen heroine: intelligent, generous, sensible, incapable of jealousy or any other major sin. That makes her sound like an insufferable goody-goody, but the truth is she's a completely hip character, who if provoked is not above skewering her antagonist with a piece of her exceptionally sharp -- but always polite -- 18th century wit. The point is, you spend the whole book absolutely fixated on the critical question: will Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy hook up?

Book Description

For over 150 years, Pride And Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen herself called this brilliant work her "own darling child." Pride And Prejudice, the story of Mrs. Bennet's attempts to marry off her five daughters is one of the best-loved and most enduring classics in English literature. Excitement fizzes through the Bennet household at Longbourn in Hertfordshire when young, eligible Mr. Charles Bingley rents the fine house nearby. He may have sisters, but he also has male friends, and one of these -- the haughty, and even wealthier, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy -- irks the vivacious Elizabeth Bennet, the second of the Bennet girls. She annoys him. Which is how we know they must one day marry. The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and Darcy is a splendid rendition of civilized sparring. As the characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, Jane Austen's radiantly caustic wit and keen observation sparkle.

Download Description

Jane Austen's perfect comedy of manners--one of the most popular novels of all time--features splendidly civilized sparring between the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth Bennet as they play out their spirited courtship in a series of eighteenth-century drawing-room intrigues. "Pride and Prejudice seems as vital today as ever," writes Anna Quindlen in her introduction to this Modern Library edition. "It is a pure joy to read." Eudora Welty agrees: "The gaiety is unextinguished, the irony has kept its bite, the reasoning is still sweet, the sparkle undiminished. [It is] irresistible and as nearly flawless as any fiction could be."

5 out of 5 stars One of the GREAT ROMANCE CLASSICS of all time !!!.......2007-10-07

I really don't need to say much about this, do I ? Most women can relate to Elizabeth Bennett, and most women love Mr. Darcy....This is my favorite of all of Jane Austen's work, and one of my favorite romances ever.

4 out of 5 stars Pride and Prejudice.......2007-09-10

Not as good a quality of book as I had expected, but it is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing novel.......2007-08-20

I decided to go to the library and take out the book after seeing the movie a few weeks ago. The movie was good but the book is so much better. It was well written, funny and everything you can expect from a good novel. Definitely a must read even if it is not required for class.

5 out of 5 stars Great seller!.......2007-08-12

I ordered from them after another seller failed to send the books I wanted. They had my order to my mailbox before the other seller even replied about their mistake. Efficient, accurate, fast & great prices.

4 out of 5 stars A good classic.......2007-08-10

This is probably my favorite classics. I don't devote too much time to reading classics but I've read some good ones before. They are not really my style but I do like the ones I have read. The different style is refreshing.
The book is written much differently than books are written these days. I was reading the begining of the book while I was tiered. I realized that I hadn't understood anything I'd read. I had to go and read again when I was completely awake.
It was enjoyable. I loved the characters; they were smarter than so many characters in other books and were very well spoken. That may, however, been how most people were in the 19th century.
It was fun to watch Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy go on with their love hate relationship. Until the end it was a lot of hate.
I thought it was a good classic but having not read many classics I'm not sure how it compares. Better than Wuthering Heights and not as good or as good as Great Expectations.

Book Description

March 2003: The United States invades Iraq.

October 2006: The world finds out why.

What was really behind the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq? As George W. Bush steered the nation to war, who spoke the truth and who tried to hide it? Hubris takes us behind the scenes at the Bush White House, the CIA, the Pentagon, the State Department, and Congress to answer all the vital questions about how the Bush administration came to invade Iraq.

Filled with new revelations, Hubris is a gripping narrative of intrigue that connects the dots between George W. Bush’s expletive-laden outbursts at Saddam Hussein, the bitter battles between the CIA and the White House, the fights within the intelligence community over Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction, the startling influence of an obscure academic on top government officials, the real reason Valerie Plame was outed, and a top reporter’s ties to wily Iraqi exiles trying to start a war. Written by veteran reporters Michael Isikoff and David Corn, this is the inside story of how President Bush took the nation to war using faulty and fraudulent intelligence. It is a news-making account of conspiracy, backstabbing, bureaucratic ineptitude, journalistic malfeasance, and, especially, arrogance.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The disastrous results of self-assuredness and deficient critical thinking.......2007-10-03

Michael Isikoff and David Cron have put together a compelling, detailed report of the faulty case for going to war with Iraq. If you want to know the story behind the various pieces of faulty intelligence that the Bush administration used to sell the war, this is the book for you.

This is a great case study for what happens when arrogant self-assuredness is married to deficient critical thinking.

It may very well have turned out that we would have eventually had to go to war with Iraq. But there was no compelling reason to do it at the time we did, and the reasons the Bush administration cited for going to war were all faulty and the information to suggest it was faulty was available all along, just ignored.

2 out of 5 stars A news story rehash.......2007-09-11

Unless you haven't read the newspapers for the last 4 years or so, this book is not worth the effort. A rehash of their and others work.

2 out of 5 stars Bloated book with nothing new to offer.......2007-09-06

This title presents the reader with a basic rehash of public reported on stories regarding the administrations rush to war. After reading it, there was hardly anything new, rather there was a summary of all the events that took place regarding the WMD case and the subsequent investigations.

I have to say that the book made no compelling characters stand out, nor did it make anyone, aside from perhaps Karl Rove seem the bad guy. In fact it's annoying habit of making everyone seem equally guilty serves to cut hard edge out of the book. All in all I kept on reading expecting something new to come up or some succinct revelation to appear yet in the end all we saw was a rebroadcast of old news.

2 out of 5 stars Important Stuff Missing.......2007-08-22

I see this is a best-selling book by two prominent journalists. It is shocking, then, that there is no mention in the book of either the "Downing Street Memo" from July 2002 which documents the fact that Bush, at least as far back is middle of 2002 (and many contend even earlier - when the Bushies came into office in January 2001 - wanting war with Iraq), had decided to go to war with the small details like the "cause" or "justification" for the war to be left up to the spin-meisters and Karl Rove.

Neither is the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) mentioned in the book. The PNAC is the Neo-Con, war-mongering think-tank which had advocated war with Iraq as far back as 1997-98.

It is sad that the Mainstream Media and the journalistic establishment has almost completely ignored the Downing Street Memo and the Project for a New American Century in their coverage and analysis of the Iraq war and the Bush administration. An even better book in this regard is Armed Madhouse: From Baghdad to New Orleans--Sordid Secrets and Strange Tales of a White House Gone Wild

1 out of 5 stars Atlas Shrugged.......2007-08-15

Whatever you think of Mike Isikoff's ultimate contentions & analysis regarding the adventures of Team Bush in the Middle East, you gotta admit the title is just killer.

Isn't it? HUBRIS. Wow. Just---wow.

No, stay with me on this: think of your worst, most hated Enemy (no silly, I admire your partisanship you Kos-Sack you, but it can't be Bush---at least not for *this* little mind-exercise).

Now imagine that Enemy getting you fired at work, sneaking into your house & introducing the sneaky snake to your wife (or the Great Oscillating Cavern of Tempation to your hubby), then killing your cat, burning your house down, & dancing up and down on the ashes.

Got that in mind? Good: now consider the word you would come up with to describe your Enemy's actions. Got that word in mind? Yes? Now: honestly, would it be 'Hubris'?

Yes? Great! Keep reading.

Isikoff has cobbled together an unsurprising critique of Bush war policy, which centers in on the primary flaw of BUSHIDO: the Bush guys, unlike the Clinton guys, did something against Saddam Hussein and Islamic terrorists. Doing something in America these days---whatever it is---is dangerous. Risky.

This isn't really a nation of big tough he-men risking it all to make the world safe for big-D Democracy anymore: it's more like a bunch of trousered knats spending lotsa time flaunting their Lance Armstrong 'livestrong' love bracelets, cycling around in their girly-girly little tightpants, and jogging.

So as you can see, in the New America(tm), the old-fashioned BUSHIDO was doomed from the start. Isikoff's book is lovingly, brutally detailed, & pretty much supports the contention that Bush should have done absolutely nothing. Maybe lobbed a cruise missile or two 'over there', but that's about it. It's also boring.

But never mind that: if you don't groove on the title, you'll really be down with the cover art. Yeah, buy it for Reservoir Dogs-esque cover art. Dig it. Quentin Tarnantino couldn't have crafted a better shot of the BUSHIDO team ambling down a stretch of Dark Territory into the next big gunfight. You can just about hear the strains of "Little Green Bag" as Condi, W., Rummy, & 'Shotgun Dick' Cheney stride down the Road to pull off that one last Job, or to face down that Bad, Bad Man.

HUBRIS! The old Greek tragic flaw that brought down great heroes, like Oedipus, or Agisthus, or Agamemnon, or Jimmy the Greek.

HUBRIS! Fortunately Curious George's case of hubris isn't quite as nasty as, say, Oedipus, whose version of the old greek disease impelled him to whack Dad, nail Mom, and gouge his eyeballs out.

HUBRIS! But it's bad, evidently, really bad, because now we're mired in the much and quicksand and blood and sludge of Iraq, and the world really hates us, a stark turnaround from the morning of 9/11, when the Nasty Cowboy hadn't invaded anybody and the world loved us all.

Why not just say what you want to say, Isikoff? Why not just call your book "Axxholes"? Why 'Hubris'? Why weaken the whiskey? Why not just come out and say what you think, guys? How about "Dumbaxxes"? Or better still, "Lying Nazi Pigs"? Or better still, "Big Ugly Poopyheads"?

Isikoff brings the same eye for detail found in his book "Uncovering Clinton", back in the day when Isikoff was famous for rooting around in Bill Clinton's underwear drawer and saving fluid samples.

Fortunately, we don't get any stained blue dresses here, but we do get the usual whack-a-Bush talking points: basically 1) the Bush administration either manufactured evidence claiming Saddam had a WMD program; 2) All the Kings Men were either too sycophantic or too incompetent to investigate such claims and 3) consequently, we now find ourselves embroiled in the GREATEST MILITARY DISASTER OF ALL TIME! Yeah.

Anyhoo, though, there are a few mysteries raised by all of this Sturm Und Drang, signifying NICHT. Among them:

1)Alright, Isikoff skirts the line of calling Bush a liar, but only barely: the whole point of "Hubris" is that the Administration knew better---so if it wasn't mendacity they were guilty of, it was close to it. So Bush lied, fine.

But if you accept that---that Bush positively *knew* there were no WMDs in Iraq, and pushed for invasion anyway---then didn't he know the later revelation that Saddam didn't have a WMD program would make him look silly, or mendacious, or both? I mean, if he's gonna lie about the WMD program to begin with, why not have a couple of trusty guys in the black helicopters plant a few nukes on the scene, after the fact?

2)If the yardstick by which our success is measured is largely temporal---that is, our troops are still *there* dangit---then why are we still in Europe, Japan, & Korea? God knows Europe is a total basket-case, Japan is cranking out manga---have you seen that stuff, especially with the tentacles?---and they have Video-gamers Anonymous in Korea, so let's bring AlL the boys home, now!

3)Isn't it a bit of a stretch to contend that Saddam was a WMD virgin, given all the NOOK-lear proms in the region he'd gone too?

I guess that's one mystery too many for me. Poor planning, sure. But Greek Tragedy? I don't think so. I'm for readability, credibility, a touch of nerdability, and truth in advertising: a wonkish analysis would have been just fine in my book.

But from its stupid title, to its mind-bendingly dull writing, to its even duller thesis, to its complete lack of strategic imagination, "Hubris" gets a big fat "F". Or better yet, in the Greek spirit, "P." For Polymachus, Python, or Prometheus, you ask?

None of the above. For "Poop".

Book Description

This sexy, epic, hilarious, poignant and romantic sequel to Pride and Prejudice goes far beyond being a Jane Austen sequel. It's Tom Jones meets Jane Austen meets Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, with essence of Scarlett O'Hara and the Wife of Bath thrown in.

Every woman wants to be Elizabeth Bennet Darcy-beautiful, gracious, universally admired, strong, daring and outspoken-a thoroughly modern woman in crinolines. And every woman will fall madly in love with Mr. Darcy-tall, dark and handsome, a nobleman and a heartthrob whose virility is matched only by his utter devotion to his wife.

Their passion is consuming and idyllic-essentially, they can't keep their hands off each other-through a sweeping tale of adventure and misadventure, human folly and numerous mysteries of parentage.

The book was self-published in 1999, with more than 10,000 copies sold. Here is what some readers are saying about Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife: "Pure pleasure...this book is so much fun I recommend it heartily." "Wow, Darcy! I could not put it down." "Tremendous-I didn't want it to end!"

1 out of 5 stars Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife.......2007-10-16

My husband bought this book for my birthday last year, knowing that I love Jane Austen and this might be a fun read. Now, 11 months later, I have finally, laboriously, finished it. Good Lord-I really had to force myself to finish it, Ms. Berdoll must have been paid by the word. A lot of them don't need to be there. I have noticed that Jane Austen fans don't like this work, and people who do love it say that if Jane Austen were alive today, she would write something just like this. Howbeit, (sorry, I couldn't resisit) I think she would use current literary terms and not prose that was way harder to slog through than Austen's. The one thing that I gasped at (yes, I really did make some noise) was the fact that Darcy's mother's name was changed. It is Lady Anne Darcy in P&P, and it is Elinor in this book-did Berdoll's copy editor not notice that little faux pas? The main arguments about character changes have been made, and I won't retread that ground, but I didn't think much of the changes. I've read my share of bodice-rippers, and this book couldn't seem to make up its mind about whether or not it wanted to be of that genre, or be taken as serious literature (yikes!). I finished it just to tell my husband that I had read it. I really liked "1776" by David McCullough-an historical retelling more than I did this book.

1 out of 5 stars A tree died for this?.......2007-10-15

I think I will try to find the poor grove of trees that were destroyed in order to create the paper on which this miserable tome was printed. And then I'll have to find out if charges can be filed for violating every known cliche and euphemism for romance writing.

Berdoll has written a wretched piece of fiction which is little more than soft porn posing as historic fiction. It's not that the subject matter is so offending; rather, it is that it is written so dreadfully! I should think that a writer who attempts to continue a piece originally written in the Regency period wouldn't be using language usually associated with hackneyed Victorian romances. Perhaps she was attempting to write erotica -- I'm not sure because even the love scenes were plodding enumerations of function rather than feeling.

Do not purchase this book unless you really enjoy tedious and trashy pulp fiction, in which case I wish you all happiness.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable !!!!.......2007-10-14

I love this book!! Once I started reading it, I could not put it down. I love the mystery and danger and romance .... it is the continuing story that you want all those who are supposed to have happy endings to have. I love the characters and their relationships. The story is mesmerizing and compels you to keep turning pages long after you have to call it a night. This is one of my new all time favorite books!!!

1 out of 5 stars Jane Austen it is not.......2007-10-10

I picked this book up at a Border's Jane Austen display, and I was stunned that it had found a publisher. To have a sequel to P&P start with Elizabeth refusing to sit on a pillow because of a night of endless sex is really unforgiveable. The prose is turgid making each sentence a long hard slog. There are numerous historical inaccuracies and the language is stilted, and in some cases, made up or misused (as in the use of late 19th century 'libido'). This is a desecration.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Darcy Takes A Wife.......2007-10-03

I thought it was wonderful and entertaining. I can't wait for the next one, the one after that, and so on. I loved it so much, I hope the series doesn't end!

5 out of 5 stars Darcy and Elizabeth.......2007-10-18

This was fantastic - I waited and waited for her to publish this...her first book was the best i have read and this one was wonderful as well. The best books on the continuation of P&P on the market. She continues the story for all of the characters with wonderful detail and makes it all end up happily.

1 out of 5 stars Sadly not Pride & predudice.......2007-10-15

My favourite Classic book Pride & Predudice and the BBC addaption from the book a masterpiece. Linda Berdoll sequels totaly misses the characters and loses all the subtle passions of Jane Austen's masterpiece.
Read Mr Darcy takes a wife and Darcy & Elizabeth, but only if you don't mind a sexual romp that debases these lovely characters. These books are OK in their own right and a good read but not lizzy & Darcy.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife.......2007-09-26

A wonderful and inspired sequel to Pride and Prejudice. The devlopment of Austen's characters and creation of new ones, along with adventure, intrigue, love and romance, makes this a marvelous read. I have read it three times already, and look forward to reading it again and again.

1 out of 5 stars Sorely disappointed.......2007-09-10

I recently purchased this book, and, for the first time, actually returned a book to the bookstore. After struggling to read more that half of the book, I had to return it.

Usually, I enjoy even the smuttiest of romances, yet this one only degrades two of the most beloved characters in the English language. The text jumped all over the place. Perhaps it ended well, but after 42 chapters, I had enough.

4 out of 5 stars Darcy and elizabeth, Days and Nights at Pemberley.......2007-09-01

I found this to be well written, but somewhat labored in the presentation. I enjoyed the basic story lines and salute anyone willing to take on the task of following Ms. Austin. An enjoyable if rather over long story.

“The Yankees always said they valued players who could handle the white-hot spotlight, could handle life in the Yankee Fishbowl.”
--from The Pride and the Pressure

What’s it really like to wear the pinstripes? This riveting account from New York Post writer Michael Morrissey takes readers inside the clubhouse of the 2006 New York Yankees and reveals what really goes on behind the hype, the media glare, and the roar of the fans surrounding the most fabled organization in the world of professional sports.

The New York Yankees began the 2006 season with baseball’s highest payroll and sky-high expectations—and more challenges than other any Yankee team in history. From owner George Steinbrenner right on down, the team took an urgent, almost militaristic, approach toward winning their twenty-seventh world championship. Morrissey had full access, chronicling the ups-and-downs on the field and the public and private skirmishes that defined their season:

·Why manager Joe Torre and general manager Brian Cashman chose to stay on for another season, despite chafing under Steinbrenner in 2005
·The saga of Alex Rodriguez: his peculiar relationship with the fans and the media and the crushing scrutiny that shaped 2006
·How Johnny Damon, the fun-loving, former Red Sox superstar, assimilated into the Yankee line-up and clubhouse
·How Jason Giambi quietly overcame a steroid scandal and became a reliable, formidable power once again
·How the acquisition of Bobby Abreu at the trade deadline redefined the Yankees, attempting to overcome serious injuries to Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui that nearly derailed the team’s prospects
·An unexpected role for Bernie Williams, a huge fan favorite whose Yankee career seemed to be over until team injuries drew the aging star back into the line-up
·Why the Yankee pitching rotation never felt bulletproof – from inconsistencies by Randy Johnson to the embarrassing injury streak suffered by Carl Pavano
·How Yankee superstar and captain Derek Jeter handled relentless expectations to win the World Series, guided the team through disastrous injuries, and faced stinging accusations of not supporting teammate Alex Rodriguez

Nothing in sports compares to the prestige and weight of wearing the pinstripes. THE PRIDE AND THE PRESSURE takes Yankees fans behind the scenes and brings it all to life.

5 out of 5 stars Another Yankee Odyssey .......2007-09-03

For once, we are not talking about the Yankees of days gone by. We are dealing in the current events of their often lopsided universe, and this book presents all of the players and all of the king's men in a very honest, current spotlight(or glare, if necessary). We are treated to a better understanding of some of the people you don't normally hear enough about. Mike Mussina, Godzilla, Robinson Cano and others are given the attention normally reserved for Jeter or Rodriguez. Even George Steinbrenner is updated to the reality of who he is right now, and not the volatile, cartoonish owner of the past. There is still plenty of ink devoted to the superstars but even they are shown to be every bit as human as the rest of us. Fans who live in the Yankee past will probably not enjoy this book as much, since they tend to continually want to compare every year and every line-up with a time that is long gone by. That's too bad. But for those of us who follow the Yankees right now, today - this book is really a terrific find. The Yankees will always be the gold-standard of class, excellence and profitability, but atleast this book will show you just how hard it is to get where they are and even harder to hold on. Forget curses, spells and other mumbo-jumbo. Success and heart - that is the true Yankee credo.

1 out of 5 stars shoddy.......2007-05-30

Baseball has always been the most literary of pastimes and has without doubt produced more great books than any other sport. Unfortunately, Michael Morrissey's new release, "The Pride and the Pressure" is not an addition to that canon. Subtitled "A Season Inside the New York Yankee Fishbowl," the book chronicles the Yanks' 2006 dramatic season, ending with their abrupt defeat against the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the playoffs.

Billed as an insider's look into the Yankees season, the book lacks a strong narrative and offers virtually no detail on the games themselves. Instead Morrissey focuses a chapter at a time on specific players, ("Jeter," "Giambi," "Mussina") causing the book to feel scattered and lacking focus. He often steps outside of his journalist role and editorializes needlessly, calling players "jerks" and other names. The clichéd analogies and badly structured sentences seem to indicate that Morrissey was a journalist struggling under deadline - never conducive to great literature.

If you want to read a great baseball book this summer you may have to pick up "The Boys of Summer," (Roger Kahn) "Summer of '49," (David Halberstam) or another classic. This one isn't much more than an extra long research paper.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview of 2006.......2007-05-07

Morrissey's book is a terrific synopsis of this disappointing season. It may be quote- heavy, but that is exactly what makes it interesting. He did not try to go through the season day-by-day or month-by-month simply recapping the box scores. He let the players and key personnel describe in their own words what happened, and gave everyone a chance to get their viewpoint across while adding valuable insight of his own. This makes for a much more enjoyable read. Perhaps fans who have already read every one of the daily newspaper stories during the season will not get as much from this. Readers who love (or even those who hate) the Yankees who do not have access to the daily reporting will really love this book.

2 out of 5 stars Decent as a research paper, poor as a book.......2007-04-25

I remember when I used to write papers in school and in college -- if I had trouble filling the page demands, I would stretch the material as far as I possibly could, fluff up the quotes, throw in some extra notes I had edited out before, and so on. It seems Michael Morrissey approached "The Pride and the Pressure" the same way, taking what is essentially an extremely long magazine feature piece and padding it until it became a 250+ page book. It's probably my least favorite baseball book of all time.

I'll admit, I didn't have high hopes for this book going in. I'm a die-hard Yankee fan, but there are two things -- I felt -- that worked against this book right from the start. 1) Despite what Morrissey and some reviewers contend, the 2006 Yankees weren't all that interesting. They had some injuries, some clubhouse tension, high hopes that fell short -- but there wasn't much so extraordinary that it was worthy of a book. 2) Only five months separated the end of the '06 season and the day the book hit the stores -- as a result, there is nothing but quotes, quotes, and more quotes. Any anecdotes on the team or players that were new or interesting were very infrequent. There is probably a reason why some of the best books that recap a season or consecutive seasons (Summer of '49, October 1964, October Men, The Last Good Season, Boys of Summer, to name a few) come out years or decades later, giving the material time to grow and the people that were involved time to reflect back and share their thoughts in a different (more interesting and less inhibited) way.

As others have noted, the major flaw in this book is the use of quotes. I don't ever recall seeing a book so heavily padded with unnecessary quotes as this effort by Morrissey. Quotes go on for paragraphs at a time, and often, they make no sense. With the apparent lack of editing, some do nothing but confuse the reader who is forced to read someone's spoken rant verbatim.

To compare, "Birth of a Dynasty," another recent book written by a NY Post sports reporter, had me hooked within the first three chapters, and it was a breeze to finish. "Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty" was very good. "The Pride and the Pressure," unfortunately, does not come close to either one. It simply did nothing for me and was frustrating to read.

Like I said earlier, it basically reads like Morrissey was told to write a 250-page paper on the Yankees as a final project, but he stalled at about 150.

1 out of 5 stars awful.......2007-04-24

This was like reading a year's worth of newspapers at once. There is absolutely nothing worthwhile that even the most casual Yankee fan doesn't know. (Jeter and A-Rod don't get along? you're kidding!) This was clearly slapped together and put out to coincide with the start of the baseball season. I read a lot of baseball books and this is waaaayyyyy at the bottom.

2 out of 5 stars Lame... very lame.......2005-02-01

This book sucks. It makes the basic principles of marketing more confusing by bombarding the reader with various terms and phrases with an excessive amount of overlap between them. There is no clear-cut distinction between the glossary items, making studying for bi-weekly exams a chore.

4 out of 5 stars Concept of Marketing.......2001-02-25

I used this textbook last semester in my first marketing class. I didn't know much about marketing. This book explains very clearly what marketing is, and gave examples of companies that are using the marketing concept, and how it affects customers.

The Book also presents ways that you, the consumer can tell weather or not a company is using the marketing concept in order to satisy your needs.

Book Description

From one of America's most acclaimed comics writers a startlingly original look at life on the streets of Baghdad during the Iraq War inspired by true events. In the spring of 2003, a pride of lions escaped from the Baghdad Zoo during an American bombing raid. Lost and confused, hungry but finally free, the four lions roamed the decimated streets of Baghdad in a desperate struggle for their lives. In documenting the plight of the lions, Pride of Baghdad raises questions about the true meaning of liberation - can it be given, or is it earned only through self-determination and sacrifice? And in the end, is it truly better to die free than to live life in captivity? Based on a true story, Vaughan and Henrichon have created a unique and heartbreaking window into the nature of life during wartime, illuminating this struggle as only the graphic novel can.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten victims of the Iraqi war get their due.......2007-10-17

This is not a child's comic book. It is a poignient and troubling account of what happened to the animals of Iraq when the zoo was bombed - by us. Yes, the animals talk, but it is no less heartfelt and somber for that. It is also richly ilustrated and a beautiful and sad tale.

3 out of 5 stars It's good, but needed to be much longer........2007-10-05

This is a good book, but mostly it feels like a wasted opportunity. It was a great idea and the art is awesome, but there is no emotional impact. The characters and story are rushed. It would have been better if it was a series or a much longer graphic novel. It would probably make a very good animated movie, but the characters still need development.

4 out of 5 stars Pride of Baghdad.......2007-09-19

When I heard about this title coming out I was immediately interested; apart from it being by the great writer and creator of the award winning Y The Last Man comic book series, the story sounded provocative, and being based on a true story made even more so.

The true story is a quick and simple one to tell: with the invasion of Baghdad in 2003, one of the first places abandoned was the zoo and when the bombs and destruction hit, a lot of cages and pens were broken open. A pride of lions escaped and began walking around Baghdad until they were found by US soldiers who were so shocked they just opened fire before the lions could do anything. With the mind and pen of Brian K. Vaughn and the beautiful and detailed artwork of Niko Henrichon, this is the lions' fictional story.

The pride is composed of an aging male, his mother, his mate, and his single cub. In this world the animals can talk to each other and Vaughn does a great job of capturing attitudes and characters with the different animals. The pride leave the zoo, after rescuing the cub from a hoard of baboons who were about to tear him apart, and travel the streets of Baghdad, looking in houses and palaces, searching for food. In one great palace they find a mighty statue of a lion and take spiritual comfort from it magnitude and the respect that humans give it. In this palace they also find a chained old lion who was a pet, presumably one of Hussein's sons or family members. There is also a mighty bear, another pet, who has broken free and there is a great fight between the bear and the lions. As the inevitable demise of the pride approaches, their last view is of a beautiful sunset on the city of Baghdad and before the cub dies, he gets to see his one and only horizon.

A very sad story, and yet moving in the way the writing and art adds such emotion and feeling to these animals that one can't help but feel they deserved so much better than their horrible end.

5 out of 5 stars Pride of Baghdad.......2007-09-02

This incredible and intense comic book is based on a true story. When the United States invaded Iraq, we bombed everything in the city, including the Baghdad Zoo. This fictional story gives us an idea of what the Lions might have been thinking during this time. The comic book follows four main characters, one male lion, two lionesses and one cub. Starting out we see their live in the zoo, what day to day existence was like. During the bombing we see what the animals think is happening, how do you explain war to someone who has never seen it? How do you explain weapons like bombs, tanks and airplanes to someone who has never seen them? After leaving the zoo, they talk about living in the wild, who remembers it and what it was like. The readers hear interesting perspectives about life in the wild, the good and the bad. A sage appears in the form of a turtle in the Tigris River where the lions are drinking water. Reading the turtle's explanation about what is happening in the animals' world is fascinating; the turtle remembers the previous Middle East war. When the Pride of lions reaches the city of Baghdad (probably the worst place they could have gone), they have no understanding for what has happened, or why the city is the way it is. They believe it is another Zoo, one for humans. Unique thought, that cities are like zoos for humans! During their travels through the city, the lions find many horrible scenes. In the end, they are shot dead by American soldiers traveling in the city. And finally, they are truly free.

4 out of 5 stars visually stunning.......2007-08-18

This certainly is a beautiful work, making it one of the best animal stories ever done in comics. I say "best" from an artistic point of view.
The dialog and story gets preachy in a "war is bad" way. Certainly no one is going to argue that war is actually good, and with this in mind, the endless bombardment (pun intended) of explosions, tanks, and "man is in the forest" fire (the sky is endlessly red) gets a bit dogmatic after a while.
What is the cost of freedom? Who's to say? If lions escaped from a zoo in the US they would probably have met a similar outcome, even without oil under their feet or turtles nagging and preaching in their ear.

As coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1959 to 1967, Vince Lombardi turned perennial losers into a juggernaut, winning back-to-back NFL titles in 1961 and 1962, and Superbowls I and II in 1966 and 1967. Stern, severe, sentimental, and paternal, he stood revered, reviled, respected, and mocked--a touchstone for the '60s all in one person. Which adds up to the myth we've been left with. But who was the man? That's the question Pulitzer Prize-winner David Maraniss tackles. It begins with Lombardi's looming father, a man as colorful as his son would be conservative. Still, from his father Vince Lombardi learned a sense of presence and authority that could impress itself with just a look. If a moment can sum up and embrace a man's life--and capture the breadth of Maraniss's thoroughness--it is one that takes place off the field when the Packers organization decides to redecorate their offices in advance of the new head coach's arrival: "During an earlier visit," Maraniss reports, "he had examined the quarters--peeling walls, creaky floor, old leather chairs with holes in them, discarded newspapers and magazines piled on chairs and in the corners--and pronounced the setting unworthy of a National Football League club. 'This is a disgrace!' he had remarked." In one moment, one comment, Lombardi announced his intentions, made his vision and professionalism clear, and began to shake up a stale organization. It reveals far more about the man than wins and losses, and is the kind of moment Maraniss uses again and again in this superb resurrection of a figure who so symbolized a sporting era and sensibility. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

More than any other sports figure, Vince Lombardi transformed football into a metaphor of the American experience. The son of an Italian immigrant butcher, Lombardi toiled for twenty frustrating years as a high school coach and then as an assistant at Fordham, West Point, and the New York Giants before his big break came at age forty-six with the chance to coach a struggling team in snowbound Wisconsin. His leadership of the Green Bay Packers to five world championships in nine seasons is the most storied period in NFL history. Lombardi became a living legend, a symbol to many of leadership, discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, and to others of an obsession with winning. In When Pride Still Mattered, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss captures the myth and the man, football, God, and country in a thrilling biography destined to become an American classic.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sports biographies I ever read.......2007-09-20

I couldn't help feeling that I was right there in frozen Green Bay, in the 1960s, at one of the Lombardis' Sunday post-game cocktail parties, and everywhere else Vince Lombardi went in his life, while reading this great book.
It's a great read, very vivid, about a great coach and (as Maraniss illustrates) not the greatest father in the world. In other words, a portrait of a human being who did great things with his work, but who had foibles like everybody else.

5 out of 5 stars A very engrossing read.......2007-06-20

I picked up this book after hearing a strong recommendation. I knew next to nothing about Vince Lombardi, other than that he was an excellent football coach. Very glad I bought the book as this was a particularly engrossing biography.

The author was very thorough in his research and traces Lombardi's life in detail for his full nearly 60 years. He provides a lot of detail on Lombardi's strengths and weaknesses. At times I wanted to slug him and tell him to quit being so intense about football and pay more attention to his family. Other times, I found myself admiring the daylights out of him. It is astonishing to think he could take the most losing team in football and turn them into major winners in just one season.

There's a lot of food for thought in this biography. Is winning really so important that you should sacrifice your family and your health? Is success really success if you never enjoy it? As a recovering perfectionist, I saw many powerful examples from Lombardi's life about why I DON'T want to be a perfectionist! Nothing is ever good enough, and you never, ever get to be happy. That is one lesson in Lombardi's life that really comes blasting out of every story.

If you like biographies, you will really enjoy this one. Glad I decided to pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Biography of a Coach.......2007-04-12

This biography of Vince Lombardi will move you to tears and inspire you to find the best in others. Lombardi was truly a great teacher, coach, and man.

5 out of 5 stars measure of a man.........2007-04-03

maybe the greatness of a man can be determined by his ability to inspire greatness in other men..by that account Vince Lombardi was a giant..maybe his tactics would not work as well with today's pampered athletes but I'm sure he would still find a way to inspire that's what the great teachers do..they not only teach about they're hired to..they teach about life..some of Lombardi's players to this day attribute their success on and off the field to the coach..I thought I knew so much about coach Lombardi but this book by David Maraniss filled me in on so many things I didn't know..Vince had a brother who was gay but he still went to church every day and never ostrasized his brother, he just figured the church got it wrong on this one..I read this book on a journey to Green Bay to visit Lambeau..I carried with me a picture of my dad shaking hands with Vince..but you don't have to be a Packer fan to enjoy and be inspired by this book..it's simply one of the best biographies I've ever read..even a Viking fan would enjoy it..as one of his ex-players recants..'there's not a day that goes by that I don't miss that man'...

5 out of 5 stars A Man's Man. .......2007-02-20

I read Harvey Mansfield's Manliness last spring, and I have to say that Vince Lombardi embodies all of his criteria for the positive expression of masculinity. Coach Lombardi demonstrated the coveted male virtues of valor, devotion, passion, loyalty, and the need for victory. What's so telling about Maraniss's account is the way in which the narrator reveals to us slowly, but consistently, just how much the man meant to the people around him. A couple of the scenes with Starr and Hornung will choke you up--particularly the letter that Bart's dad sent to Lombardi. When Lombardi went to the Redskins, even though he was only with them for a year, he transformed the players completely. He walked up to the podium with a single ring on and restored their hope. Sonny Jurgensen had never possessed a leader's mentality before meeting Lombardi. In a single year's time, he led the team to a winning season and became a man admired for more than talent alone. For all of us who are devoted fans of the NFL, Coach Lombardi will always be remembered and treasured. I say this despite the fact that I have no use for the Green Bay Packers and have hated them since I was a kid. No matter, a man like this is above partisan loyalty. He's better than all that stuff. He could be gruff, angry, and harsh, but everyone around him (almost unanimously) still loved him because they could sense him love and devotion. He returned their love again and again. Vince Lombardi was a teacher, a coach, a tactician, a strategist, and a man's man, RIP.
