Customer Reviews:
Love all of Nora's romance books.......2007-02-25
You can never go wrong with a Nora Roberts romance novel and this is just one more great one in the list.
Tears of the Moon.......2007-02-07
If you love Nora Roberts then, you will not be disappointed
I ride the train to and from work as this is " my time "
It would not be the same without one of her books. :-)
A fine female central figure.......2006-08-20
This is certainly one of Nora Roberts' better novels. As always, she creates a realistic setting, herein the delightful village of Ardmore, County of Waterford Ireland. In fact, Ms. Roberts is about the best writer working today in creating a getaway setting for her plots. For this alone, the book is worth the time to read.
As an aside, the town Ms. Roberts describes actually exists, pretty much as we see it in this trilogy. There is a ruined church dedicated to Ireland's first Christian, St. Declan, and there is a round tower on the hill overlooking Ardmore and the sea on the south coast of Ireland. The population of Ardmore is about 300 people. However, there is no known pub there named Gallaghers. Too bad.
What makes this book stand above the first and third books of the Irish trilogy is the character of Brenna O'Toole, a young woman who works beside her handyman father and dresses like him. Readers have seen far too many frilly, bosomy heroines and young Lochinvar heroes. It's a pleasant departure to find a heroine full of contradictions and with earthy overtones.
The plot is more than somewhat predictable, alas. Anyone who has read one or two of this writer's novels knows exactly what is going to occur. Man and woman are introduced to the reader. They clash, even as they are attracted to one another physically. There will be a sex scene about half way through the book, in this case a far more specific scene than usual. Then there will be at least one or more similar scenes before the inevitable happy ending. The ending here is a bit of a downer, in that Brenna is, to my thinking, humiliated in a very painful way for no good reason. It leaves a rather bitter taste for the reader who has read it all.
But let us not quibble too much. Nora Roberts is a very good writer. Her settings, her characters, her dialogue--all are excellent. One can only wish that she might surprise the reader by not using the same plot formula again and again.
An Awesome Book!.......2006-07-02
This is truly one of Nora Roberts' better efforts. I own around 70 of her books, and Tears of the moon is definately in my top 10 favorites. I found it to be engaging, relaxing, amusing, heart felt and endearing. The charactors are unique, diverse and very believable. Even the Fairie prince and the ghost, Lady Gwen, were believable. I enjoyed the fact that she didn't stereo type her charactors. The entire series was incredible, I would recomend this to any Nora Roberts fan, or to anyone new to Romance novels.
Love it!.......2005-12-09
I love this book so much. The story of the fae helping the humans and the great story line will just suck you into this book. I felt like I was in the book with how wonderful Nora Roberts explains who things are happening. Parts get a bit slow, but then it picks up and you are swept away again. Some sequels leave something to be desired but this sequel doesn't. It fits so well into the first. Well worth the few dollars and the time to read. Definitely a great book!!

The Sword of Truth, Boxed Set I, Books 1-3 Wizard's First Rule, Stone of Tears, and Blood of the FoldThe Sword of Truth, Boxed Set I, Books 1-3 Wizard's First Rule, Stone of Tears, and Blood of the FoldBook 1: Wizards First Rule The masterpiece that started The New York Times bestselling epic Sword of TruthIn the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help . . . and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence. In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them--for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say. In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword--to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed . . . or that their time has run out. This is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.Book 2: Stone of Tears An Epic of Awesome PowerKahlan has at last gained the one goal she had always thought was beyond her grasp .... love. Against all odds, the ancient bonds of secret oaths, and the dark talents of men long dead, Richard has won her heart.Amid sudden and disastrous events, Richard's life is called due to satisfy those treacherous oaths. To save his life, Kahlan must forsake Richard's love and cast him into the chains of slavery, knowing there could be no sin worse than such a betrayal.Richard is determined to unlock the secrets bound in the magic of ancient oaths and to again be free. Kahlan, alone with the terrible truth of what she has done, must set about altering the course of a world thrown into war. But even that may be easier than ever winning back the heart of the only man she will ever love.Book 3: Blood of the Fold An Epic of Two WorldsIn a world as rich and real as our own, Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell stand against the ancient forces which besiege the New World-- forces so terrible that when last they threatened, they could only be withstood by sealing off the Old World from whence they came. Now the barrier has been breached, and the New World is again beset by their evil power.War and treachery plague the world, and only Richard and Kahlan can save it from an armageddon of unimaginable savagery and destruction.Terry Goodkind, author of the brilliant bestsellers Wizard's First Rule and Stone of Tears, has created his most masterful epic yet, a sumptuous feast of magic and excitement replete with the wonders of his unique fantasy vision.
Customer Reviews:
wizard set.......2007-09-12
great to get a set like this. When you finish the 1st book 2nd one is right there.
Great style, substance and themes........2007-09-11
Goodkind's writing seems to mature with each book, adding nuance and layer to his seemingly simple themes and characters, leaving the reader to wonder to themselves about what "good and evil" really are.
The stories come alive with great characters, plenty of action, and the wonderment that magical concepts add to the stories. All the fun of being a kid again, but with the adult themes that will keep you reading far into the night.
Have fun!
Sword of Truth.......2007-09-01
Very fast transaction and accurate description of the item, so I would recommend this Seller.
Fantasy at its best!.......2007-08-16
I recommend the first 3-4 volumes of this serie to every fan of good fantasy-literature.
Very creative story, fascinating characters, a lot of suspense, a lot original ideas!
It`s too bad that after "Temple of winds" the whole story started to lose its grip, logic and tended to repeat itself.
Nevertheless, as said before, the first 3-4 volumes are excellent!
Don't Buy This Set.......2007-08-05
Unless you've already read the series and just want to replace your copies, don't buy this set. I made the enormous error of purchasing this set without reading any of Goodkind's novels first. I forced my way through Wizard's First Rule and realized that I wasted my money. I have no intention of ever reading Blood of the Fold or Stone of Tears.
I have very, very few positive things to say about the Wizard's First Rule. So I'll just get the positives out of the way now. Zedd is a very likable character. Not very original, certainly, but he's kooky and funny and hard not to like. The character Giller, too, is likable after a fashion.
Well, that's about all I can say thats positive about the novel. So lets get to the negatives.
1. It's poorly written. The narrative is clumsy, the dialog is repetitive and unrealistic. Not only is the language poor, but Goodkind is unable to logically construct even a simple paragraph, let alone an entire chapter. He has a habit of meandering in his paragraphs so that the first sentence of the paragraph has absolutely nothing to do with the last sentence. This would be understandable were he writing in stream of consciousness, but, alas, he is not. He also has the annoying habit of changing the perspective of the narrator from paragraph to paragraph without informing the reader, making it difficult to sort out who thinks what.
2. The characters are detestable. As I already said, Zedd and Giller are good characters. But they are minor characters. The hero, Richard, is one of the most immediately dislikable protagonists I've ever seen. He's arrogant, whiny, awkward, stupid and completely intolerant of other people and their cultures. Which leads me to my third major criticism.
3. Inconsistent character development. Goodkind frequently changes the personality of his characters to suit the chapter. In one chapter, Richard throws a tantrum because he cannot use his right hand to do something because it is against the culture of a tribe he is visiting. A chapter or two later, he willingly eats the flesh of another person because the culture dictates he must. In addition, Richard (and the other characters) range from mind-bogglingly stupid to brilliant and back something within a couple paragraphs. Goodkind makes his characters smart when he needs to in order to advance the plot, then makes them stupid when he needs to. Richard, Kahlan, Zedd, etc., all do enormously stupid things, and then are brilliant the next chapter. And its not just one character, every character is in turns brilliant and stupid. And it seems that there is always one brilliant character and several stupid characters at any given time so there is always enough intelligence to advance the plot. What's the point of having 800 pages of character development if you just throw it away to advance the plot?
4. And speaking of the plot, the story of the Wizard's First Rule is pretty poorly devised and highly predictable. There are two major secrets in the novel, the first being the identity of the Wizard (which is readily apparent within the first 15 pages of the text) and the identity of the Traitor (which is apparent as soon as it is learned that Richard was betrayed). And despite how painfully obvious who these characters are, Goodkind painstakingly devotes hundreds of pages to discovering their identities. It's terribly painful clawing your way through this book when you already know how all the big secrets and how the book is going to end within the first few chapters.
5. Plot-lifting. In a lot of ways, Wizard's First Rule is a dumbed down version of Robert Jordan's the Wheel of Time. Richard is essentially Rand Al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, though he is purely a good character and destined only to help the world. Kahlan Amnell and the Confessors are utterly identical in every way to Jordan's Aes Sedai. The torture and training Richard endures is identical (and often down to the very wording) to the training Egwene Al'Vere endures. Darken Rahl is a very poor rip off of Shai'Tan, the Dark One (and, for that matter Darth Vader of Star Wars fame). There is very, very little of Goodkind's original thought in the Wizard's First Rule, and what original thought there is is very poor.
6. Convenient Writing. Goodkind is the King of making crap up as he goes. Due to his inability to write his way out of a wet paper bag, Goodkind is constantly having to make up new powers or abilities to get his characters out of a seemingly impossible situation. The best example for this is one scene in which Kahlan, Zedd and Chase are ambushed by Darken Rahl's minions. For whatever reason, Zedd and Chase are incapacitated and Kahlan, for some other stupid reason, can't use her powers and is being raped. Suddenly, Kahlan develops a new ability that 1. has never been mentioned before, 2. she admits that she had never been able to do before, 3. must be taught by an expert, as stipulation Kahlan never met. Yet somehow, Kahlan is able to use this power and miraculously defeats the enemy. Goodkind's writing in these situations is so bad that he flat out admits what the character just did is impossible, but goes with it anyway.
In truth, I could list another dozen or so criticisms of this book. But I doubt anyone is going to read that much. My advice: If you've never read Terry Goodkind before, read him before you blow the extra money on this set. If you're an intelligent, well-read reader, you will likely hate the series and regret spending the money, as I did. You are more likely to enjoy this book if you are a child, say 10-12 years old, or you have never read a fantasy book before. If you fit into either of these categories, the cliches will not seem so bad, and the new world of fantasy will blind you to the very poor writing and storytelling. But in either of those circumstances, I would still advise against buying the set. Make sure you like Goodkind before you drop the money for three of his books. Go to the library and read a chapter or two first. There's a very good chance that you will despise this novel like most other experienced readers.
I gave this set two stars, by the way, for the reasons listed in the previous paragraph. If you're an inexperienced reader or are new to the fantasy world, this series will work well for you. In addition, Mr. Goodkind CAN write, and can write well. The Wizard's First Rule features one or two chapters that are marvelously written. But this is an extreme exception to the rule. Perhaps the later books are better, but after Book I, I will work very hard to ensure that I never read another word of Goodkind's writing.

Tear Soup helps teach kids that it is OK to grieve.......2007-10-06
Tear Soup has been a great instrument in helping our family deal with the death of my sister. It reaches to all levels from the kids to the parents. Some parts might be a little over the heads of younger children, but in all it has helped each one of us in the grieving process. The author even touches on the differences in how each of us grieves. I have recently sent a copy to my nephews after their father passed away suddenly. I feel it is one of the best books on grief that I have seen.
Excellent.......2007-10-03
At 1st I decided not to leave a review b/c already there are so many, but PRAISE is always due for this book. I will quote an earlier reviewer that so far, this bk is "...the best, truest book on grief I have ever read..."
I also highly recommend it for times of sudden & tragic losses. It was here on Amazon(over a yr ago) that I 1st learned of the bk, yet since then I read & given it as a gift and have seen this book referred to others by "word of mouth" many times over. I hope this bk provides the support & guidance you all are seeking. Peace & Strength.
Very helpful in teaching my son how to deal with his grief........2007-10-03
This book was very helpful in teaching my son how to deal with his grief over the loss of his grandpa. There were a few parts that I thought were a little too mature for him (he's 9 years old), but for the most part it was a great book.
A comfort book & for dealing with loss.......2007-09-28
Practical guidance for dealing with loss presented in an illustrated story form as though it were a children's book. Charming and helpful with comforting words and advice that helps well past the point when your acquaintances may begin to tire of your grief and mourning. This book gives you permission to grieve and also give you permission and guidance in going on with your life. This is a book for all ages.
There is a list of resources in the back for those dealing with different kinds of loss. Though they do not have a resource specifically for people who have lost someone in War they do have a large range of support groups etc.
A Grieving Mother.......2007-09-22
My daughter died suddenly 6 weeks ago and a friend, who lost her son last year, sent this book saying that it would help me understand the unknown and confusing physical, emotional and spiritual things that were happening to me and our family as we come to terms with the new, now much less perfect, world we inhabit. Many friends have given many books, but this is the only one that I will pass on. The book is perfect in every way from the illustrations to the end-notes and advice for friends and family of the soup cooks. It is touching, profound, funny and affirming in just the right combination.

excellent work.......2007-08-23
Bruce Webber is the best photographer there is. Each picture makes you want to take the time to apriciate his work.
Master of his art.......2006-12-23
Bruce is the master of two dimensional space. As always, interesting and provocative.
A Coffee table book of mammoth magnitude..........2006-11-10
An amazing Bruce Weber portfolio and everything a good coffee table book should be. It's size is amazing pound for pound and filled to the brim with Bruce's ad campaigns for Versace, Abercrombie & Fitch, endless fashionista mags as well as a plethora of portraits. Quite a treat for the eyes for no one takes a picture like Bruce Weber. Never have I seen a photographer who can capture the ultimate essence of beautiful youth like this man. Indulge yourself with this one...
positively excellent.......2006-11-10
Probably the best photo book I have ever seen. Excellent quality and one to keep for life. In the Netherlands it would cost be 150. Bij Amazon just a little over 80.
BEYOND WACK.......2006-01-03
You have got to be kidding me. This stuff was tacky when it ran in magazines... so now a book of it? Whatev... not to mention the horribly CHEAPO paper and way crummy binding. What was the guy thinking? Filthy lucre, I suppose. Three to six months until it hits the remainder table. A better subtitle might have been, "How I Stopped Worrying About What a Decent Book Should Be". Save yourself the bread.
Book Description
The Columbine tragedy in April 1999 pierced the heart of our country. In December 1999, we learned that the teenage killers specifically targeted Rachel Scott and mocked her Christian faith on their chilling, homemade videotapes. Rachel Scott died for her faith. Now her parents talk about Rachel's life and how they have found meaning in their daughter's martyrdom in the aftermath of the school shooting. Rachel's Tears comes from a heartfelt need to celebrate this young girl's life, to work through the grief and the questions of a nation, and to comfort those who have been touched by violence in our schools today. Using excerpts and drawings from Rachel's own journals, her parents offer a spiritual perspective on the Columbine tragedy and provide a vision of hope for preventing youth violence across the nation.
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully done book.......2007-05-19
This young lady was a beautiful soul. It is a sad story but one of hope as well.
Her parents did a wonderful job describing the tragic story.
Anyone interested in the Columbine event should read this.
Excellent.
blessed.......2007-05-04
i was so blessed by the words of faith that your little girl has shared. Its very rare to see such faith in anyone.Thank You for sharing her story. It has really blessed me.
Rachel is weeping for her children.......2007-03-26
This is an awesome book. I wept more than once while reading it. For those of you unfamiliar, this book is about the story of Rachel Joy Scott, a young girl, deeply committed to Christ who was martyred in the infamous Columbine High School massacre. I learned a lot about this horrible event, and the wonderful life of this girl who knew, as evidenced by her journals, that she would die young. After reading this book, I became convinced, as Darrell Scott was the morning of the killings, that this was a spiritual event. It is interesting to note that prior to the killings of April 20, Klebold and Harris had turned a school project detailing their dark fantasies, and no on seemed to have picked up on this. I gave this book five stars not based on quality of writing, which could have used some thorough editing, but on the story, which blew me away. I think everyone who has children should read this book.
People who claim that the demonic music,tv,video games have no impact on their children should definitely read this book. I also agree with Darrell Scott's opinion that is clear these children(the murderers) opened themselves up to spirtitual influence that were beyond their control.Klebold and Harris deliberately targeted Christians on that day, and they had made tapes prior to the event that illustrate their intense hate and dislike of Christians. I ######### this book, but don't be suprised if this book changes your outlook on things!
Thus says the LORD,
"A voice is heard in Ramah,
Lamentation and bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
She refuses to be comforted for her children,
Because they are no more
True story.......2007-03-23
This is a very emotional book, especially since it is a true story. I think this is a really good way to make teens aware of what kind of society we live in. It gives them the opportunity to look for some of the signs before something can go terrilby wrong. Make your children aware of their surroundings, educate them.
Amazing story.......2007-02-25
This is the most inspirational book I have read in years. I highly reccommend it to everyone. A sad but beautiful story of a very brave young woman.

Customer Reviews:
Tears of a Tiger.......2007-08-01
This book is a must read for teenagers. It is insightful and thought provoking...the story line is something that many can and unfortunately, may relate to as they go through high school.
Drinking Causes Death.......2007-06-21
Andy is a high-school student and a good basketball player. His best friend Robbie is the star of the basketball team, and the two of them hang out with two other close friends, Tyrone and B.J. One night after a good game, they get into Andy's car. All except B.J. are drinking. On their way home, they get into a car accident and Robbie is killed, while the other three are barely injured. Andy isn't even charged with much of anything; he goes back to school like things are normal.
Inside, though, things are far from normal. Andy feels distant from everyone, and he is wracked with guilt. He continues to lean on his girlfriend, Keisha, and shares all of his depression with her. His parents have never been very close to him, and they aren't there for him now that he needs their support. None of his classmates or his teachers seem to be able to understand what he is going through. Andy often feels like he is drowning in sorrow and he can't let go of the accident.
I liked the idea of following a student through such a tragedy to see how he was affected by it. I also liked the different points of view in this story; they helped me to get a more well-rounded idea of what everyone in the story was thinking.
I thought that some of the parts of this story were very unrealistic. These were pretty savvy high school kids, yet they had old-fashioned ideas about sex and they never used swear words. I'm sure that was done to prevent the book from being censored out of high school libraries, but it made the characters seem less real. I also found it hard to believe tht teachers would be as prejudiced as the teachers in this school were.
great book.......2007-06-14
Tears of a Tiger is a very exiting book that you can't stop reading. This is my all time favorite book. Teas of a Tiger is a book about a teenage kid named Andy who blames himself for the death of his best friend who died in a car accident caused by him. After watching his best friend burn to death he is tormented by reality and constantly has bad reams about his death. The only comfort that he has is with his girlfriend Kiesha and when he is talking to his little brother Monty. But because of the way that he is acting and trying to bring attention to him his girlfriend leaves him. After finding no one to talk to for a while he is overwhelmed with depression and shoots himself in the head. After when his brother gets home from school he notices blood dropping from the ceiling and a puddle of blood leading from the second story. When his mother goes upstairs she finds him with a shot gun in his hand and his head blown to pieces.
This book is written all in dialogue by the author Sharon M. Draper so I think it is better because you can find out more about the charters life and what they feel and think. Reading this book made me think about what I would do if one of my closest friends died and it made me think about the people that kill themselves because of depression and how depressed they have to be to just solve the problem by ending there lives. This author has written many more books about people like this, and has a collection of books called the Hazelwood high. I am planning on reading more books by this author to see how they compare to this best seller.
AMAZING.......2007-04-08
I read Tears of A Tiger in one day!! I love this book so much. This is a really sad book and it basically made me cry. Its about Andy,a guy who lost his best friend in an accident and took the blame for it. He felt really depressed for months until something bad happened to him(sorry won't say...to good to say...gotta read it to find out). But this is one of my favorites.. and I would read it all over again...I'll never forget this book for as long as I live.
Daughter loved the book.......2007-03-09
My daughter loved this book. Anything that can get her to read is alright with me.

Amazing!.......2007-09-11
EZ's writing is exquisite, entertaining, an easy to understand. I love how you are actually thinking about what you are doing when working with her, not just following a laid out pattern. My knitting and the way I look at it is on another level after reading this book and putting it's suggestions into practice.
A legend.......2007-09-02
Well, what can you say about Elizabeth Zimmerman? After learning to knit from a friend and then struggling to decode complicated steps with the help of instruction books and the internet, I finally discovered Ms. Zimmerman's no-nonsense and quite experienced advice. And am I ever glad. She takes undecipherable knitting steps and says "Nonsense" and goes about simplifying everything. My husband kindly bought her "Knitting Workshop" DVDs for me, and I watch them over and over and learn to love this new craft even more. I am SO glad I discovered Elizabeth Zimmerman.
Knitting Without Tears book.......2007-08-27
This book was my source for learning to knit; the European method it uses is excellent for knitting quickly. The first garment I made, a tomten, was a simple and cute hooded jacket for my baby daughter. Zimmermann is a great teacher and her quirky writing technique makes for fun reading.
Knitting again.......2007-07-23
This book was mentioned in another knitting book that I checked out of the library as being a book of encouragement. Truly it was. I also found it at the library and thought it so good and inspiring that I bought it here. Mrs. Zimmerman is witty and encouraging and empowers you to knit what you see and want without worrying about goofing. She has given me the courage to change patterns around--successfully I might add! This book is a gem.
Perfect for beginners and for experts!.......2007-05-13
As you can deduce inmediately, english is not my mother tongue. EZ's "Knitting without tears" is THE knitting book for beginners or for experts. I've been knitting for more than 30 years and I learned many tips and hints from Elizabeth Zimmermann's "Knitting without tears". Something really important about this book is that we can enjoy knitting with no stress, we can be creative with no fear, and most of all, from the basics to the most elaborated you can face yarn and needles with confidence because everything is in those pages: how to start, how to solve problems, how to knit for YOU (every body is different), how to finish as a pro...
If I ever have to chose only one book to teach or to learn knitting, "Knitting without tears" is, by far, THE ONE (even for someone that doesn't speak english like me!)
One more thing: once I had this book in my hands, I order all the other books and videos by EZ!!!

What's not to love???.......2007-06-04
Loved it! This author writes with clarity and passion such that I find myself immersed in his work. Truly a don't miss!
A Beautiful Life.......2007-05-31
An enchanting book for all ages, of a good, quiet, content, polite world. No violence, no sex, no sadness. Characters are satisfied with the way they look, and the way they live, and have plenty to give! This book encourages moral, social, and family ties. It promotes the almost-forgotten concept of active involvement in bringing happiness to others, and hence to oneself. In this novel, Africa is forever warm, colorful, friendly, and proud.
Outstanding Stories.......2007-04-06
I have read everyone of Alexander McCall Smith's books of life in Africa and I loved everyone of them. Alexander McCall Smith is a great story teller and his characters come to life. His talent in describing the everyday events in the life of his characters is nothing less than brilliant. Do yourself a favor, read any one of his books and you will be transformed into the life of
people you don't meet everyday.
The Adventures of Mma Ramotswe continue.......2007-03-03
In TEARS OF THE GIRAFFE the wonderful sequel to THE NO.1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY, Mma Ramotswe, the strong, feisty, proud but compassionate lady detective (the only in Botswana, maybe Africa) faces new challenges both in her life and in her work. Upon her engagement to the kind, reliable mechanic, Mr. J.L.B Matekoni, she ponders a possible move, negotiates the purchase of her engagement ring (diamond, of course!) and suddenly finds herself a new mother of two children. She is also called upon by an American mother to resolve the mystery of her son, who disappeared in the desolate Kalahari Plains many years ago, and track the modern, 'wayward' wife of a honest butcher.
Like its predecessor, this book is not your typical "who dun it" detective story- in fact, the detective element figures in this story even less than in the first novel. Mma Ramotswe only solves two cases- actually, she solves only one, as the other is solved by her able, newly promoted Assistant, Mma Makutsi. Rather, the novel focuses on developing solid characters (apart from Mma Ramotswe, we get much more insight in this novel into the characters of Mr. J.L.B Matekoni and Mma Makutsi) and highlights life in Botswana and the views of its proud people.
Unlike its predecessor, this book has more of a focus on ex-pats and development workers, which I found interesting as an ex-pat development worker in Africa. Mma Ramotswe comments that Ex-pats often do not have good manners (ie, would shake with one hand, leaving the other hand free for 'mischievous activities') and do not understand simple, obvious issues such as the fact that the dead are always with us. Ex-pat development workers, although well-meaning, are always coming up with bizarre, idealistic theories and schemes. They are always giving advice, always trying 'to change the world.' But, as Mma Ramotswe says, vegetables just were not meant to be grown in the Kalahari desert! Furthermore, "Africa needs its own solutions."
This novel also focuses on moral issues: Mma Ramotswe and Mr. J.L.B Matekoni both lament the loss of 'the Old Botswana morality' which promotes hard work and a respect for elders. Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi struggle with moral questions such as, does the end justify the means? Ie, is it okay to lie, manipulate and blackmail to get a desired, even just, result? The novel ends on a beautiful note, suggesting that in order to heal after loss, compassion, understanding and reconciliation maybe more important than strict justice.
love the detective agency.......2007-01-24

A Masterpiece - A Must-Read.......2007-09-04
I am a descendant of some Southeastern Native American tribe: Creek, Choctaw, or Cherokee. The record is cloudy, and my exact lineage is hard to pinpoint.
So it is that I commenced learning about the Trail of Tears, and this is the first book that I picked up in that endeavor, (as I was driving through Oklahoma and made a stop at the Cherokee Trading Post).
The story effects me, not as horribly and directly as it did my ancestors - but it's effect on me was as personal and offensive. The Trail of Tears stole my ancestry from me.
The book was hard for me to read for many reasons. It clutches at our assumptions about American history. It gets us into the human side of that ugly chapter in our past, almost as though CNN were there covering it. It fomented within me terrible emotions regarding one of my American heroes: Andrew Jackson. I cannot think of another man I admire, Zachary Taylor, in quite the same way anymore!
Gloria Jahoda's The Trail of Tears started me down my own path, and helped me answer some of my most poignant questions: I think that my ancestors were most likely Creeks, for instance, and this helps. But I also now know how they were living in the early 19th Century - that they were likely settled farmers or craftspeople living at peace with their neighbors. I know that they were likely Christians, practicing the faith in ways the Europeans could only imagine. I know that somewhere there was a Scotch-Irish frontiersman who became my paternal ancestor.
The genealogist seeking answers about Native American roots will not be able to go back very many generations, before running into brick walls. This is sad and frustrating.
The answer is to be found in excellent histories like this.
But I have not said anything yet about the quality of writing, depth of research, and the way she ties many different plots together into one relentless narrative.
And so - I urge all readers to read this book. And even moreso, students of American Indian Policy, and genealogists like myself that are seeking answers about our Native American ancestry.
An Important Chapter in American History.......2007-06-25
Trail of tears works well as a companion to Dee Brown's more famous book Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. It tells much the same story about the eradication of Native American culture, except it deals with an earlier period and with the removal of tribes from the eastern part of the United States. It is a fascinating and disturbing chapter of American history, covered in an accessible style that makes this chapter in history available to all. My only complaint is that the book tends to paint a very black and white picture of a very complex period in history. All white American were not evil and all Native Americans were not noble. However, the overall telling of history is fascinating and not commonly known. It is well worth reading, especially if the reader is aware of the prejudices expounded in the text.
A MUST READ!!.......2007-02-13
If there are only 2 books that you buy that relate to Native American history, they should be Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee and THIS account of the Trail of Tears.
Two summers ago I decided to enter a t-shirt design for the Trail of Tears Commemorative Motorcycle Ride (which I won and I rode in). Before I could create a design for something so important, I decided that I should learn much more than I already knew about this HORRIBLE scar in our countries history.
As I talked to people, this book kept coming up, so I bought it. As soon as I opened it, I was pulled into the story- I couldn't put it down.
The title, while fitting, is a little misleading because the author doesn't just cover the journeys of the 5 nations that became known as the Trail of Tears - And that is definitely a great thing. The book begins well before the removal and covers many of the events that led up to it, thereby giving the reader a much better understanding of the how's and why's. It also covers the Cherokee political struggle in the US capital, trying to stop the removal from happening.
It's a sad story and has no happy ending, but it is something that everyone should read.
BTW- I'm not sure what "Eagles Soar" was reviewing...it didn't sound like it was this book though.
Trail of Tears Review.......2007-01-13
A great book. I wish everyone knew how the government treated the Cherokee.
Does not represent the true facts as they really were!.......2007-01-07
This movie was influenced by the writings of the white people. The costuming was not correct, as they Indians progressed down The Trail of Tears, their clothes would have been torn, dirty and tattered. They did not have all the nice blankets that the movie protrayed! Many Indians froze to death because of lack of clothing and warm coverings. If it was really been written by the Indians that were on the Trail of Tears, it would have been protrayed all together different. It would have shown the REAL truth about what happened, like in the book called the "End of the Trail of Tears". This book shows the REAL truth, written by a real Native American, and all the hardships that they had to endure during their forced removal to Oklahoma.
Book Description
The fascinating portrayal of the Cherokee nation, filled with Native American legend, lore, and religion -- a gripping American drama of power, politics, betrayal, and ambition.

Unevenly written but an enjoyable read.......2007-07-24
Ehle's writing style can be entertaining, but is also uneven and at times downright confusing. The strengths are his telling of the Major Ridge story, which is really what this book is about, i.e. The life of Major Ridge and his son, John Ridge, and nephews, Elias Boudinot and Stand Watie. This was the first book I had read about the events leading up to the Trail of Tears, and I came away with the distinct impression that Ridge was a tragic hero who was treacherously murdered by the anti-treaty party of John Ross. Ross is portrayed as basically an inept leader who spends his life on a wild-goose chase to hold on to the Eastern Cherokee lands.
Imagine my surprise when I did some more research and learned that that is not at all how the Cherokee view these two men. On the contrary, Ross is seen as the hero and Ridge as a traitor, and in hindsight I see why that is.
Read this book for some info into the life of Major Ridge, but to find out how the Cherokee see the Trail of Tears, read something else.
Not all shame belongs to the white man.......2007-07-09
No one can doubt that the Native Americans were robbed of their land and wealth in the white mans rapid expansion and desire for land. What this book brings to light are the other culprits in this tragedy. It is difficult to picture a leader of the Cherokee people being a lobbyist in Washington while securing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of contracts for him self, family and friends. This is a story of two migrations of the Cherokee people to the new Indian Territory one with little or no suffering along the way and the other the Trail of Tears.
trail of tears.......2007-06-13
The book was great. It had all the information I needed.
Counterpoint to the whitewash.......2006-10-19
Darwin might suggest that the exodus of the Cherokees from their native land to new territories was an example of a uniquely human ability to decide to survive. To remain in areas near an invading population with superior technology and ever growing numbers could easily result in annihilation. History had already proven this could be the case. What makes the Trail of Tears a segment of history that every American should be aware of is the uniquely inhuman reasons why the Indians were faced with a decision at all.
The book takes a cursory tour of history up to the time of the Trail of Tears then makes a more illustrative turn as it settles into describing the rift created within the Cherokee tribe surrounding their dilemma. John Ross and his followers preferred to stay, while Major Ridge and his son organized to leave.
This rift set in motion a number of well described events that not only tore the tribe apart in waves that echo to this day, it laid waste to many lives and much property along the way. Although the book starts with a plodding pace, it gradually builds into a complex weave of politics and a tragic drama.
The Trail of Tears certainly leaves one to question why are so proud of Andrew Jackson that he must be printed on every $20 bill and why we insist on calling the football team from Washington the "Redskins". We should recognize a derogatory attitude for what it is and have more respect for a civilization that held the original title to this land.
Woefully inomplete and biased.......2006-09-28
The "Rise" of the Cherokee nation is nowhere to be found in this book. In fact the "Fall" is well underway before chapter one, and continues to this day with the publication of tripe like this.
Any fair depiction of a clash of cultures needs to see each culture in it's context. Ehle doesn't seem to attempt this. His descriptions of Cherokee and settler life make no attempt to relate to their specific histories, but merely poke at them with a judgemental 20th century stick.
Two stars are simply because he has thrown out many names that anyone with a serious interest in the subject can use as tools for research.
