Book Description
Ghosts, accidental time travel, a secret clan of immortals, and Maxwell's Demon are all subjects in this complete collection of short stories by Tim Powers. Elusive and evocative, these stories are excursions into strange and dangerous worlds and are as colorful and inventive as Powers's novels. A pioneer of the popular "Steampunk" genre of speculative fiction, his complex and tightly researched "secret histories" blend with compelling fantastical elements to create some of today's most memorable modern science fiction.
Customer Reviews:
A great collection, BUT a reprint........2006-07-31
If you are smart, you would read everything by Tim Powers. He is that good. But this is a reprint of an earlier collection,"Night Moves" from Subterranean Press(2001). The contents are a little differant,
Introduction by James P. Blaylock
"Night Moves"
"The Way Down the Hill"
"Where They Are Hid"
"The Better Boy"
"We Traverse Afar"
"Itinerary"
Story notes by Tim Powers
Ghost Stories for Adults.......2006-04-21
I loved ghost stories as a kid then as I grew up and old my tastes changed, as they should. Tim Powers is one of my favorite writers of both novels and short stories. Broadly, I describe his work as Harry Potter written by Hunter S. Thompson but it is more deeply etched than both. "Strange Itineraries" is a collection of ghost stories for me as a forty-something adult.
A fine blend of supernatural and science fiction.......2006-04-20
Tim Powers' STRANGE ITINERARIES is for any who love a touch of the supernatural in their science fiction and fantasy: here in his world ghosts are volatile powers, Ether Bunnies abound, and priests face the powers of the dead they are seeking to sanctify.
Remarkable & Bizarre.......2006-03-25
Quantum theory, time loops, alternate realities, the supernatural and one special story about a gentle old man whose pants are torn off by the side mirror of a speeding Torina are all included in this remarkable collection of short stories by Tim Powers.
Powers has the writer's skill of placing the utterly unreal into the norms of our day-to-day reality. Another great American writer, Edgar Allen Poe, used this particular skill to great effect with such stories as The Fall of the House of Usher and The Man of the Crowd. The tale begins ordinarily enough and then suddenly jumps, sometime subtly, sometimes not so, and we find ourselves bounding along to alternate realities, witnessing sad spirits in a catholic confessional or attending a strange gathering of immortals. And, incredibly, it all seems quite feasible. This is fascinating reading and extremely entertaining.
What really makes these tales stand out is their credibility, as one can perceive that their contents have been thoroughly researched. The vast majority of these stories' theme is the notion of time itself: where does it begin and does it ever end? Some of his characters are confused at the start but then later, as in the story 50 Cents, the character appears to accept their fate, that they are trapped in time, and this reality will never end, and continue to replay itself like a scratch on a CD.
In the story, Pat Moore, the character begins his day like any other, (except for a chain letter he has received, which if not passed on, could well prove unlucky), a professional gambler, sets out in his beat up Dodge, where he observes a man in a Chevrolet with a sawn-off shotgun, tries to run him off the road. An instant later he sees a woman appear next to him, who claims to be his guarding angel, when the Chevrolet crashes off the road. At first he is shocked, but as the tale unfolds, he puts together the clues, to discover it all has to do with his dead wife. The story becomes more bizarre, yet believable, finally sorting itself out in the end.
The two cleverest stories, Where They are Hid and Night Moves, on face value are outlandish, but are so well constructed, every loose end is tied up nicely, with a hint of irony, that they actually become credible.
This is Tim Powers's only collection of short stories, as he's predominately a novelist. All his novels are award winners and to a certain extent, as other writers have said, he leans towards Phillip K. Dick more than any other America writer. In fact a young Powers met an older PKD where he had nothing but praise for the younger writer.
After reading these exceptionally entertaining short stories, I hope Powers decides to write more short stories, because the one's included in Strange Itineraries are remarkable.
less is more, more or less. I'll take more and... less!.......2006-01-07
This is the first Powers in short form I've read, and I plowed through it quickly. I wanted more. I like the way Tim's mind works.
I found "The Way Down The Hill" especially dark and alluring; The nightmarish image of immortal souls freefalling through oblivion, then taking a new hand hold on life by displacing unborn souls... I loved it. It is an image forever etched into my brain. I think that's worth the price of this book alone.

Book Description
Saltman and Goodman show how corporate-produced curricula, films, and corporate-promoted books often use depictions of family love, childhood innocence, and compassion in order to sell the public on policies that ironically put the profit of multinational corporations over the well-being of people. In doing so, the authors reveal the extent to which globalization depends upon education and also show how battles over culture, language, and the control of information are matters of life, death, and democracy. Customer Reviews:
A book everyone should read.......2002-04-01
At a time when consumerism has become the primary way in which people relate to the larger social order, Goodman and Saltman have written a rivoting critique of how corporae culture has undermined civic virture, participation, and citizenship. Written in a language that is accessible, clear, and vibrant, this book is a wake up call to educators, parents, and others about the need to resist selling democracy to the highest bidder. Goodman and Saltman examine in a number of studies how corporate culture lacks a language for ethics, justice, and and defending the public good. Read this book and pass it on to your children, friends, and teachers.

WOW!!!.......2001-02-02
Once in a while a book comes along that really holds your attention. I can imagine times when I felt uneasy after I heard a creak in the night or the russle of leaves behind me when hiking. This book makes the hair stand up on the back of you neck, and to think, it was based on true stories. Great work Southerly.
UFOs: Physcial or more "metaphysical?".......2000-06-10
Curt Sutherly's book is an excellent read. He places UFOs into their true context: Are we dealing with a phenomenon that is physical or "metaphysical" as he calls it. In his dandy forward he sets the tone of the book by noting, "....he dismissed the prevailing belief that UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft and began working under the assumption that something far more odd and complex is at work... What some of us failed to take into account was the potential for heightened emotional and psychological stress. For Raymond and a number of others....the stress arising from the unrelenting (and other undisciplined) study of UFOs was worsened by a belief that the phenomenon was more metaphysical than physical." UFOs, black panthers, Big Birds, Bigfoot, and aliens; Curt puts them all into the proper perspective. My own investigations in the Troup-Heard Corridor of westcentral Georgia and eastcentral Alabama have confirmed what Curt writes so well of. An informative page-turner. I recommend it to all.
Strange Encounters.......2000-02-25
Outstanding! This book has great stories and is a must read for anyone. I could not put it down until it was completely read.
Book Description
Who is really in charge of the world economy? Not only governments, argues Susan Strange in The Retreat of the State. Big businesses, drug barons, insurers, accountants and international bureaucrats all encroach on the so-called sovereignty of the state. Professor Strange examines the implications of this rivalry and points to some new directions for research in international relations, international business and economics.
Customer Reviews:
Recent past performance is no indication of future outcomes.......1998-10-26
Susan Strange offers an excellently argued understanding of how the recent emphasis on national and global market forces has ham-strung political actors. However, as recent events in Russia and S.E. Asia have shown, political actors may still have the upper hand. While the book is marvelously presented, its thesis places too much emphasis on the here and now in its efforts to understand the future of political systems. My three star rating belies the great joy that this book must bring to economists who gain an opportunity to see the world as their domain.
Customer Reviews:
fantastic.......2004-08-16
i absolutely love this book. it soooooooo has to be one of the best of l.j. smith's. rob and gabriel sound so gorg. i cant wait to read the next one . if u have read any of l.j. smiths books than read this one amd even if u havent still read it its great!!!!!!!!!!
Good start.......2003-09-16
Kaitlyn Fairchild has always been unnerved by her uncontrollable ability to draw pictures of the future. So she's thrilled when she gets into a special school for psychics. For the first time in her life, Kait is surrounded with people she feels she belongs with and she's especially interested in kindhearted Rob. But she begins to suspect that the owner of the school has an ulterior motive, one that could get Kait and her new friends killed.
The Strange Power is an intriguing but a bit slow start to the Dark Visions Trillogy. I probably should be continuing L. J. Smith's The Vampire Diaries series but I decided to take a break from that. This series was a nice chance of pace. I really enjoyed the characters and am curious to see what happens next. I have no clue why The Vampire Diaries seems to be the favorite of many L. J. Smith fans. This series and all her others are much better.
good book.......2003-01-02
title xplains my opinion
The Strange Power!.......2002-07-16
Kaitlyn Fairchild is a psychic. She sees things before they happen by drawing things. The problem is that her drawings never make sense until the actual event happens. But one day Kait is called out of class and she meets Lydia. Lydia tells her about the Zeetes Institute. A place in California where she can learn to control her psychic abilities. When she arrives she meets the other students: Rob, Gabriel, Anna, and Luis. Soon though they all begin to realize that something isn't quite right and that Mr. Zeetes may have more sinister intentions. Another interesting thing going on is that Gabriel psychiclly linked all of them and now he can't unlink them. So now they can read each other's thoughts.
This is an EXCELLENT trilogy. My god I love Gabriel. Geez he sounds sooo FINE!
well, if you like psychic stuff..........2002-01-09
I guess this was a good book. It sort of reminded me of Lois Duncan's The Third Eye and maybe this one was based off it. Who knows? Well, I would if I were psychic like the people in this book... Anywho, this book starts a trilogy that is your basic teens get sucked into a situation seemingly above their heads until they grow and rise to it and blah blah blah... BUT there is no denying that it's extremely easy to read, not at all boring, and that the characters are cool. Sure you have the bad boy turned good by good girl cliche but here it's pulled together with as little cheese-iness as possible ^_^ All in all it's worth a read. This is a pretty good start to a pretty good trilogy

Dark Visions.......2007-02-20
I have read this book so many time and it still doesn't get old.
Great!.......2007-01-09
I have always been an avid fan of LJ Smith, so I was not surprised that this series was awesome. Her descriptions are always so clear (and so strange) that you can almost envision the people and things in front of you (unlike everyone else though I loved Rob more than Gabriel). As an adult now, I still read her books (although I have yet to find the last book of the Nightworld Series). A great read for anyone!!!!!!!
I didn't know God himself wrote books!.......2004-07-10
This book is by FAR my favorite book of all time. Kaitlyn Fairchild is my new favorite female character. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings... Yeah, they don't hold a candle to L.J. Smith's Dark Visions Collector's Edition.
Personally, I am AMAZED that this book doesn't get more recognition than it currently does. I would enjoy it more than life itself if this book became a movie. I'm actually telling all my friends about it.
I am not much of a reader... at all... But this book... This book made me cry, made me laugh, made me think hard on certain subjects... everything. I loaned my copy to a friend in hopes of getting her hooked on it too.
I have read and re-read this book, time and time again, for years. It never gets old. Smith's vivid descriptions of surroundings and characteristics give me a good mental image of all her characters.
I am seriously thinking about getting her other books. In fact, I will.
Read this book. If you think you knew what a good book is... you haven't read anything until you read this.
Good but not great.......2004-01-07
Whilst LJ Smith's books are a good read, I do get narked with the characters sometimes. Most of the lead characters are too nice and any 'bad' characters are always gothy and into heavy metal. Goodie is sickly sweet and oh so nice blonde, baddie is hot but very nasty brunette (see how easy it is to follow the plot read the secret circle if you don't believe me) But back to this, this had a great starting point, but lost the plot slighty. LJS seemed to be really hitting us on the head with how 'bad' Gabriel was and how nice everyone else was, and of course the main female is so understanding and desired by all. Liked it but not as much as the Forbidden Game.
Dark Visions: The Strange Power, the Possessed, the Passion.......2003-12-11
I had read several of L.J.Smith's Nightworld series when I read Dark Visions, and I was immediately spellbound. The characters were all well-developed and very appealing - you cared what happened to them. Of course, Gabriel was my favorite. There's something so appealing about a bad boy in need of salvation. I read the whole thing through in one sitting and then sat down and read it through again. I would recommend it for anyone interested in the unknown, in coming-of-age books, or just interested in a good read.

Customer Reviews:
Lytton At his Best: Reading for Dark Stormy Nights.......2005-02-01
Bulwer Lytton was a celebrated writer of Victorian England yet today unlike Dickens (for example) he has faded to less prominance. I think this is due to books like "The last Days of Pompeii" which were well regarded in their day but currently are inaccessible to the modern reader due to verbose language descriptions that obscure the plot. However Lytton wasn't always writing in this style and for the post-modern reader "A Strange Story" is a great and epic book that is full of fantasy and romance. It is filled with the captivating gothic style that one might expect from an occult novel yet doesn't insult the intelligence of the reader like many hooror/occult books tend to do.
The story starts out when a young doctor moves to an unamed town in England and he aquanting himself with society. Simultaneous of this a strange vivacious man also has arrived to the area. The whole town is "abuzz" about this man who seems downright other-worldly and the doctor soon befriends him yet is very mistrustful of him... The plot thickens and of course there is a woman that gets in between the two. You will have to read on...
So buy this book and wait for that dark and stormy night... If you are fan of Harry Potter, a fan of English Literature or just looking for something different this book has a lot to offer and isnt too difficult to read. Enjoy this one
