Rise Above is Gwen Shamblin's follow-up to her million-selling, spiritually based weight loss book, The Weigh Down Diet. Expanding the principles of that book, Rise Above promises to deliver readers from what Shamblin calls the "bondage" of food. Rather than offering a simple diet plan, Shamblin addresses the spiritual root causes of overeating and admonishes her readers to serious introspection. "We are not lacking for information now," Shamblin explains, "we are hurting for motivation and heart-changing cultivation." Shamblin helps readers find motivation to master their cravings for food by reminding them of God's desire to control every aspect of life. "You may eat anything," she writes, "but you are not to be mastered by anything, for 'you are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body' (1 Cor. 6:19b-20)." Shamblin, a registered dietician, conveys her nutritional expertise and her spiritual conviction in every chapter of this straightforward, commonsensical, Bible-based book.

1 out of 5 stars It's Not About Weight Loss.......2007-06-12

I have this book and read the first three chapters before I put it down. Mrs. Shamblin's doctrinal beliefs do not mirror mainstream Christian thinking. She has an agenda she is pushing, but it's not about weight loss. I encourage readers to check out Christian reviews about her weight loss program and her church. It is really scary stuff. If your goal is to lose weight and to experience a closer walk with God, The Dieter's Prayer Book by Heather Harpham Kopp can be used with any healthy-eating weight loss program.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag of Truth and Error.......2007-05-28

First I will say that Gwen Shamblin is giving us the truth about how to lose weight and win our battle with food. She has correctly diagnosed that food has become a God-substitute in our culture. She tells us truly that we are a greedy and self-indulgent people. If you follow her guidance about tuning in to your God-given hunger and fullness mechanism, and obeying God's signals for eating, you will lose weight. You will overcome temptation as you trust God more and consciously think about what you are doing in the realm of God's will concerning over indulgence.

However, if you are an 'orthodox' Christian, you will be challenged by some of Gwen's teachings, and will find them disturbing. If you believe that God is triune, and that Jesus is the Son of God and God the Son, prepare to be challenged. Gwen takes Scripture out of context, or uses only her very narrow interpretation of certain 'proof texts' for her agenda. Her understanding of Church history is limited at best, and is sometimes very wrong. She can come across as judgmental and mean.

If you are a very strong in your faith, you may be annoyed at some teachings, but you can still benefit from this program. Keep your focus on the Exodus metaphor, and Gwen's teachings about God's design for your hunger mechanism and how to cooperate with it. Stay attuned to learning more about how God works in your life, especially in the things you never thought about before (like your relationship to food). You will lose weight, and can gain a closer relationship with God. You may have to ignore a lot of bad theology, but Gwen's teaching on overindulgence as idolatry is very good.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Source.......2006-06-27

I am appalled at some of the negative comments this book has received since it is indeed a life changing source of information. Her book was written with poise and a deep love for our Lord and Savior. Not only will you learn how to break free from strongholds, but you will learn how to have an awesome love affair with the 1 true GOD. So please rescue yourself from the clutches of the enemy and begin to live anew. Thankyou Mrs. Shamblin for your wonderful insight.

1 out of 5 stars this woman is NOT A PROPHETESS as she claims.......2006-01-04

do not waste your money...gwen shamblin is a leader of a CULT!!! i know people who belong to her remnant fellowship-they have completely abandoned their family members who are not part of the "chosen few" who know the real "truth"...do not support this woman or her leaders. eat less and excersize more, the weight will come off. ask GOD to help you and strengthen your resolve...but don't look to Gwen...she is the devil's friend.

1 out of 5 stars Graceless Message in all of Gwen's books.......2005-12-21

Started to attend the new Change series one month ago and felt something was definately missing in her message about how God viewed me about my sin of over eating.I had bought her books the Weighdown diet and Rise Above. Many scriptures to back all her claims but where is the scriptures on Grace? Aren't we saved by Grace through faith,it's a gift from God,not of works so no one can boast? Well that's all she does boast how only her Remnant Fellowship and like minded people will be saved from God's wrath. My bible tells me God has not appoint us to wrath! That's why Christ came in the first place. Why does she looks at the speck in her brothers eye when all along she has a log in her eye?I know if I were to die today even overweight I would go to heaven because I am In Christ. And don't tell me it's cheap Grace.Grace isn't cheap Christ paid the price so we can be saved. These books are full to the brim of Pharisee legalism just Beware.Believe me I sent alot of money on the series and the Holy Spirit is the one who showed me the error in these teachings along with other ex-Remnamt members and Weighdown members (you can find out that this teaching is a cult on the internet),who were either kicked out and never spoken to again or made to be ridiculed in front of the whole Remnant church.I threw away ALL of my books related to Gwen Shamblin. Some claim that there's fruit in people lives and it's changed them.Well there's fruit in other cults too and some day they will be tested by fire (holy spirit) and I believe all her works will be burned up as chaff!

Miracle cure stories abound when it comes to natural healing. A super nutrient reverses cancer after chemotherapy has failed. A Chinese herb lowers high blood pressure in a patient with heart disease after being dismissed as quackery by doctors. Jordan S. Rubin's account of returning from the medical abyss, however, includes an original twist. After several years of battling Crohn's Disease, which included a small fortune spent on both conventional and alternative treatments, as well as trips abroad in search of help, Rubin weighed only 111 pounds and, at just age 21, thought his life was over. At the urging of his father, a naturopath, he contacted an obscure nutritionist in California promoting a diet based on the teachings of the Bible. Yes, we're talking what Jesus ate: kefir, lamb, sprouted breads, eggs and meat from free-range chickens, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Rubin also started to pray and added a new powder supplement containing homeostatic soil organisms (HSOs) to his diet. Four months later he weighed 170 lbs and was on the road back to his former athletic and healthy self. Inspired by his experience, and now with advanced degrees in nutrition and naturopathic medicine, Rubin has crafted The Maker's Diet. While the faithful will surely find the book of interest, Rubin's command of the scientific issues underpinning his recommendations may also appeal to those more accustomed to studying food labels in search of what to eat than ancient religious texts. --Patrick Jennings

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good read for IBD.......2007-09-02

I certainly don't ascribe to every single detail of this book, or Mr. Rubin's beliefs (although, there are many that I do) but this is a definite read if you have IBD, IBS, or any other GI problems. Since I have Crohn's, I can speak from experience. I am using his philosophy, in conjunction with the SCD and have had good results. I believe using diet as a means for therapy is great, but it won't deliver results overnight. You have to be willing to give it a chance.
To most of you who gave 1* or 2*'s, I offer you 4 remarks. You either a) have never suffered from a disease yourself, b) you aren't a Christian (or you just can't stand the thought that the Bible MAY have something to offer!), c) you didn't even bother to read the book, or d) you didn't follow the diet. Don't be so blatantly obvious! Oh, and reality check, don't take life so literally....think outside the box!
I have had IBD for almost 8 years. If you think that doesn't qualify as someone who has some knowledge of the GI system, you are wrong. It doesn't always take a MD or some "righteous" degree/credentials to write a book and share knowledge. In fact, all my MD's want to do is shove pills down my throat or open me up with a scalpel.
4 stars for this book. Just another way to avoid taking so many drugs. I do wish, however, that Mr. Rubin offered more for less. As in less money. You have to pay to be a member on his website (not gonna happen!) But, in the same breath, I've paid enormous amounts of money in pharmaceuticals and doctor's visits. I don't mind buying a book or two if it might offer even an ounce of help! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Mr. Rubin!

2 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2007-08-09

The problem with this book is it assumes everyone has the same problems as the author. I gained weight because of all the dairy fat and wound up with gall bladder problems. Mercola's book is better since it addresses people like myself who are a carbohydrate type.

5 out of 5 stars Read this to get a perspective on diet options.......2007-07-25

I was given a copy of this book while shopping at a health store. There are some great nuggets of information in here. I am not even going to go into the religious talk on this. Get what practical information that you can from this book. There are great ideas that the average person can learn from, while searching for a better, healthier way of living. This is a good starting point.

1 out of 5 stars gibberish.......2007-07-17

according to a reputable scientific site:
"Garden of Life, Inc., of West Palm Beach, Florida, and its founder and owner, Jordan S. Rubin, have been ordered to stop claiming that their dietary supplements are effective against a long list of ailments, ranging from colds to cancer. In 2004, the FDA ordered Garden of Life to stop making unsubstantiated claims for "Q-Zyme,""Primal Defense," "Virgin Coconut Oil," "Fungal Defense," "FYI (For Your Inflammation)," "RM-10," "Revivall Classic," or other products [1] In 2006, the FTC filed a complaint and consent agreement involving unsubstantiated claims that:
Primal Defense treats intractable immune disorders, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, lupus, colds, flu, and Crohn's disease, and reduces users' blood cholesterol levels;
RM-10 treats cancer, helps lower users' blood cholesterol levels, prevents and treats cardiovascular disease, and treats immune system disorders;
Living Multi reduces the risk factor for diabetes and prevents diabetes-related syndromes, reduces the risk of obesity, and reduces inflammation; and
FYI (For Your Inflammation) treats and prevents inflammation, including inflammation caused by arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, sports injuries, asthma, allergies, fibromyalgia, lupus, scleroderma, and other inflammatory conditions.

Under the settlement, Rubin and the company:
Must pay $225,000 in consumer redress. If it is found they misrepresented their financial status, they will be responsible for more than $47 million--the total gross sales of the four dietary supplements.
Are barred from making unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits, performance, efficacy, safety, or side effects of any food, drug, or dietary supplement, or any program that includes such a product.
Are prohibited from misrepresenting the results of any test or study when marketing such products and programs [2]"

3 out of 5 stars Hallelujah Diet & Lifestyle Rip Off.......2007-07-15

I will begin by saying that if you are currently eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) this book has information that will help you TRANSITION to a much healthier way of eating and living. However, if you are seriously ill and need healing quickly, you would be better off with George Malkmus' 'The Hallelujah Diet'. Brother George wrote his predecessor books to that one long before Rubin came out with this book, which appears to steal much of Malkmus' material. The big problem is that Rubin throws expensive organic, free range meat and dairy into the mix. If you read Rubin's first book about his healing, you will find that it didn't include fiberless, acid ash forming meat and mucus laden/forming dairy. These foods have been shown conclusively to contribute to disease by 'The China Study' and many other highly reliable sources. But, having them in this diet makes it much more palatable to people on SAD, hence it's current popularity. I also have an issue with Rubin's high priced supplements which he requires as part of his regimen. While Malkmus has a reasonably priced line of supplements available for the Hallelujah Diet and Lifestyle, they are not 'required' for maximum benefit from his regimen.
Biblical Scripture does include this 'Noahic' diet, however I believe the Maker's Diet would be more correctly described by Genesis 1:29, which Rubin does quote, and which describes YHVH's Original Diet in the Garden, as well as the Hallelujah Diet. It just makes logical sense that this would be the ideal as it was given in the ideal state of man, created specifically for his body's needs. Noah appears to have been given permission to eat meat based upon need, as most vegetation had been destroyed in the flood. Just because we have permission does not indicate that it is YHVH's ideal for us.
I am a Certified Health Minister with a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering and a work background as a Certified Environmental Trainer specializing in Health & Safety and Hazardous Materials who has studied several of Rubin's books carefully and find them seriously lacking in comparison to the much more effective and practical Hallelujah Diet and Lifestyle materials.

This is an eye opening book. It is not only well written, but it hits home on a topic that many people today need to reevaluate.
I loved it and recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone desiring to mature as a Christian.......2007-07-23

Before I read the book I heard Brother Bevere preaching. I then bought a set that included this book, the CD's for "Affabel" as well as video presentation and one of his novels. I was impacted by his message from the beggining.
The whole subject of this book is that our present life is nothing when compared with eternity. Based on this premised, we must do our best on this life to first, to be save, and second, to ensure that we secure the rewards that God has for us in his Kingdom.
These rewards are not just "spiritual" but real they are promised in the Scripture. Bevere starts his book by presenting the allegory of the Kingdom of Affabel, which he uses as an allegory of this life and the coming Kingdom of Christ. The characters of the story represent various forms on which people approach the Christian faith, both voirtous and others fallacious as they do not adhere to the Scripture. At the en of the allegory the chareacters face King Jalyl, and receive what they deserve for how they lived their lifes.
Bevere goes on and makes a case for how most of Christians -and obviously those who are not- waste most of their lives building and working on things that are not of etenrnal significance. By using the Affabel allegory and using the holy Bible to support his teachings, Brother Bevere demonstrates what the Bible says about eternity, how people are actually living it, and how really we should see it. He also tell us what God expect from us and the benefits of us following His Will and Plan.

I found this book life changing. I recommend this book to anybody and everybody, whether you are a believer or not. If you are a believer, you will shape up and start to put something in your "account" with God, otherwise all your hard work will be gone when tested by God's purifying fire. If you are not a Christian, well, you need to "open" an account, becasue otherwise everything there will be nothing left for you, other than eternal punishment.

3 out of 5 stars Very impressive - with one MAJOR flaw.......2007-07-21

There is a lot to recommend in this book. Bevere makes a compelling case for filtering all of one's thoughts, words and actions through the light of eternity. Good stuff! And he writes better than most. Why just three stars, then? For a major doctrinal flaw. Bevere devotes one entire chapter to his conviction that it is possible to lose one's salvation by one's actions. His "proof" of this contention is utterly unconvincing, as any teaching outside Christian orothodoxy would be. I was flabbergasted - if he's wrong about this, what else is in error? It's difficult to recommend for this reason alone. The book with the offending chapter excised would be worth five stars, easily.

Book Description

Get Rich, Don’t Bitch

“I don’t have time to deal with my money.”

“Managing money and investing is too intimidating.”

“I’m not a numbers person.”

“My husband takes care of our finances.”

“I’m just not good with money.”

Jean Chatzky has heard all the excuses for why women don’t deal with their finances. She used to make them herself. For the first time, Jean tells you how she made every financial mistake in the book—not paying her bills, going into credit card debt, letting her 401(k) lapse—before finally making the decision to take control of her money and her future.

Whether you’ve made these mistakes or you want to avoid them, if you’re ready to take charge of your financial life then this is the book for you. In it, Jean shares these valuables lessons:

• Where to start

• How to decode financial jargon (it’s easier than you think)

• How to get over your “I’m not smart enough to deal with money” feelings

• Why being a “good-enough investor” will make you more money in the long-term (while trying to be a “great investor” will drive you crazy)

• Why you might think you are bad at math, and why that doesn’t have to be true

• How (and where) to save your money

• Why women make better investors—and higher returns—than men

Jean is famous for her ability to explain money and investing. In a clear and accessible way, she breaks down all the scariest parts of dealing with money—from investing in stocks to saving for your retirement—to make them doable, easy, and yes, even enjoyable. She also includes throughout a “Map to a Million,” great tips on easy and quick financial changes you can make immediately . . . that really add up!

Are You Ready to Be Rich?

If you want to get rich, if you want to be wealthier than you are today, you really need to do only four things. That’s right, just four things.

• You need to make a decent living

• You need to spend less than you make

• You need to invest the money you don’t spend so that it can work as hard for you as you’re working for yourself

• And you need to protect yourself and this financial world you’ve built so that a disaster—big or small—doesn’t take it all away from you

Everything else is just window-dressing. The fees—and how to avoid them. The advisors—and how to hire them. The deals. The scams. The ins. The outs. They are all interesting. Some of them are even quite important. But until you have conquered the heart of the matter, they are all minutia.

The four cornerstones, by contrast, are the meat and potatoes of your financial life. If you do those things today, you’ll start getting rich tomorrow. And once you feel set financially, you’ll be able to start focusing on the truly important things in life. — from the Introduction

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A crowd pleaser.......2007-08-30

I see why Jean Chatzky is so popular, she really can break things down so that anyone at any level can understand them. At times I was hoping for something more but felt that I learned a lot nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Practical insights -- not fluff (a "good" thing).......2007-05-30

I think Suzy Orman gave this industry (financial self-help) a bad name. Jean has restored its lustre.

Jean provides a thorough overview of the process of optimizing ones financial affairs. I'm in the investment management business (with Ivy degrees -- whatever that is worth) and am generally skeptical of this stuff, but Jean gives tangible, actionable insights, and writes with great skill. A clever book that is also useful -- rare.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Women.......2007-05-19

I felt this book is great for those women who don't know enough about their finances, but would like to start. I am a single mom and do all my own, but still learned a few things to start saving for the future.

3 out of 5 stars Guide to financial security for women........2007-04-08

The author wrote this book to be directed to women. If you enjoy shopping and hate dealing with finances, then this book is for you. Jean Chatzky will gently guide you with a little prodding to quit whining and get your finances in order.
She believes if you want to get rich, if you want to be wealthier than you are today, you really need to do only four things.
1)You need to make a decent living.
2)You need to spend less than you make.
3)You need to invest the money you don't spend so that it can work as hard for you as you are working for yourself.
4)And you need to protect yourself and this financial world you've built so that a disaster-big or small-doesn't take it all away from you.
This is outstanding advice and I completely agree with her, these have been the keys to building my personal 6 figure net worth.
She also has sprinkled through out "Map to a Million" which shows you what saving and investing a certain amount of money will grow to in 20 or 30 years. Some of the amounts are really shocking. For example start investing 10% of a $35,000 income at 30 years old and you will have $457,254 at retirement, if the employer gives a 5% match it will be $685,881 at 65 years old.(This does not even include raises, and the money gets about 8% a year in stock index funds).
If you are a beginner in personal finance reade this book, it will be a tremendous help. Also read Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey for a book from a male perspective.

5 out of 5 stars A book every woman needs!.......2007-03-18

The conceit - a conversation between Robin (more my speed, and mother of twins) and Melissa (the more disciplined one) - elevates what could have been a lecture or a screed into an engaging back and forth on individual choices and preferences. The format and the layout make it easy to breeze through in hours - the "takeaway" section at the end of each chapter reinforces the key points. What I appreciate most, though, are the tips and techniques that make veggies more appealing. I know I'm supposed to eat more - I just can't stand the taste of crudites without dip, and I don't always have the time to puree them into my sauces. Melissa's foodie techniques like drizzling olive oil and sea salt over even orange slices work better. Their idea of building a meal around what you're really craving, or eating each item on the plate in direct proportion to how much you really want them make eating a delectable opportunity for decision-making. The Skinny also incorporates ideas from other recent bestsellers - the idea of the balance beam recalls French Women Don't Get Fat. I also like how realistic they are: they identify three types of overeating, and merely say try not to get to the most serious stage more than twice a year. There's no guilt - only the grown up acceptance that sometimes we mess up, and so we try again the next meal.

4 out of 5 stars Practical and a joy to read!.......2007-09-28

The author does not try to teach you their diet plan. Rather, it gives you tips to tweak your own lifestyle. Good insight to work with your habits and not go cold turkey on your favourite foods. Thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring~~.......2007-09-10

I read this book from cover to cover in just a couple hours. It is by far the best diet book I have ever read! (and believe me, I have read many!!) The advice is practical and inspiring. The book is fun and easy to read. Can't wait to read it again!

5 out of 5 stars A real woman's guide to dieting.......2007-08-15

Living in New York City with yummy restaurants, coffee houses and bakeries on every corner, it's hard to resist the temptation of a chocolate croissant or triple latte with extra foam. That's why I'm so glad my friend recommended The Skinny-- the tips in each chapter have helped me get through everything from my cappuccino choices to packing healthy lunches for the office and even the occasional cocktail party! I can tell the authors have been there and they get it! This is definitely a diet book for the real world. The food is fun, recipes--like the Whole Wheat Cherry Scones and London Broil with Caramelized Pineapple--are delicious, and the guidelines are easy to stick to. "Eat what you want. Don't eat what you don't want." If this city girl can fit into her little black dress, so can you!

5 out of 5 stars Great book even if you're already skinny.......2007-08-13

I was somewhat offended when I received The Skinny from my boyfriend as a birthday present. (He insisted that I didn't need it, but I couldn't help being a little angry.) He thought the recipes looked good and told me I should give it a chance. I went ahead and read it through, and I've since come to love it!

The Skinny is witty, smart, and concise - a true pleasure to read. The recipes are fabulous and fresh, bursting with flavor while being almost deceptively healthy. Each one strikes just the right balance between being nutritious and indulgent, which is essentially what the book is all about. I do have a big sweet tooth, and even though the book (rightfully) doesn't pay much attention the sweets, the recipes the authors do have are very satisfying (I am particularly a fan of the ginger-stewed rhubarb.) (I also love, love, love the Moroccan carrot salad and the broccoli and tofu salad with garlic and cumin - both are quick and interesting weeknight dinners.)

Even though losing weight is really not my priority, many of the recipes in The Skinny have become part of my permanent repertoire - I love eating them and feel better after doing so. My diet has also become more varied, and I eat way more vegetables and whole grains than I used to. What's there to lose?

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Anyone Who's Ever Asked TheQuestion.......2007-10-07

If you have ever wondered why you're single, this is the book for you. It surpassed my expectations and is something I'll be recommending to friends. The book deals with the complexities in personal relationships and causes you to analyze your own behavior and confront some of your issues. It is LESS about men and their behavior and more about you: Which is the way to find healthy love by having happiness begin with you. Some great topics it covers are: examining your hidden ambivalence, how to say no when you're in the wrong relationship, how to detect and avoid men who aren't going to commit, and the best part: how to identify and say no to "BTN's", which are better than nothing relationships. A pivatol point in the book was when she discussed how you can be with a really great guy, but there might be one thing missing. And if it's something big then you have to walk away rather than settle for someone who is "almost" Mr. Right. I think many people settle and this book will show you how not to.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting and useable helpful hints.......2007-09-27

Very interesting hints and points how to meet people who match with your intrests and needs.

3 out of 5 stars Step one, find a huge group of availble partners .......2007-07-05

If you really don't know how to attract a mate, are subconsciously avoiding finding one, or tend to make poor choices....this book is for you. On the other hand, if you would love to find the perfect life partner but are limited by the number of available people of the same sexual orientation, age, attractiveness or social class, this book will not help you. It depends heavily on your having a reasonably large dating pool. She makes it sound like everyone has enough people in their social circle to create an endless reject list if necessary.

4 out of 5 stars Non-sentimental, good advice.......2007-05-18

It will probably make you want to break up with the person you are dating...which may be why you are reading the book. I thought the first half of the book was the best part and had some very good points and was insightful. The second half of the book--less interesting. But I did buy it for a few girlfriends who needed to read it.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!.......2007-01-30

I bought this book in 1990 and still have my copy with multi-layers of highlighting. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I learned so much and, to this day, I still use the term "psuedo intimacy" in discussions about relationships. (I also refer to "psuedo love" which SP does not use in her book but which is clearly inspired by her and inferred.)

From Chapter 6: "Understanding the distinction between pseudo-intimate games and real intimacy is the best defense against getting deeply involved with a person who cannot open up to you, become vulnerable, and share closely in the way a lifetime of living together demands." "...now, a relationship can move from formal to friendly to sexual in the course of one evening. ... The (Closeness Game) game looks and feels like genuine intimacy but leaves you feeling empty in the end."

From Chapter 10: "...if you are still single because of a lack of self-awareness and self-acceptance, then all the strategies and techniques in the world won't be very useful to you. A good relationship with yourself is a prerequisite for a successful relationship with the person you love. If you don't love yourself, you will place an unfair and impossible burden on your partner: you will try to get him or her to make you feel good about yourself. ...self awareness is an ongoing, ever expanding process."

That and much, much more is contained within the pages of this book. Highly, highly, highly recommended. Life-changing (for the better).

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For Overeaters.......2006-09-08

At last! A book written for people who are addicted to food and who are sick to death of diets, support groups, meetings and excuses. This book teaches you how to recognize the addictive voice inside of you and become master over it. AVRT, or Addictive Voice Recognition Technique, truly gives the power and control back to YOU. This recognition, as well as applying, what the Trimpey's refer to as T.A.P.S. is all you'll ever need again to lose all your excess weight. TAPS stands for Time - Amount - Place - Stuff. Setting rules about the time you eat, the amount you eat, where you eat (never in the car or in front of the TV, etc.), and of course, the "stuff" you eat, all in conjunction with making the "Big Plan" (i.e., I Will Always Eat Correctly) really, really works. I read this book, applied the AVRT to my life, and the weight has just melted off. The best part? I did not diet nor will I ever again. Now that I can recognize the addictive voice which screams for more food, especially when I don't need it, I know that I will never have to struggle with fatness again. I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars A different point of view on the concept of "Food Addiction".......2002-01-21

This book turns the 12 step recovery movement as applied to overeaters on it's head. The Trimpey's are most known for their opposition to Alcoholics Anonymous and similar 12 step programs; Overeater's Anonymous is the same program used in AA, only applied to "food addiction". The first step of Overeater's Anonymous is to admit that one is "powerless" over his/her compulsion to overeat; that overeating is a lifelong "disease" that will never be cured. Only by working the 12 step program and attending meetings for life can anyone begin to approach "recovery". The Trimpey's argue that this belief system is irrational and ultimately unhelpful to the overeater. The book outlines some key "Philosophy of Fatness" (irrational beliefs) that helps to keep us overeaters fat. Some of these beliefs are the following:

1. I am powerless over the urges to eat, and therefore not in control of what I put into my mouth.
2. To feel like a worthwhile person, I must be "presentable" to others; so that no one will see me as fat or unattractive or even plain.
3. To build self-esteem or respect myself, I must lose weight.
4. My painful emotions and cravings are often intolerable, and they must be controlled by eating food.
5. It is a dire necessity for adults to be loved, accepted, and approved of.

The authors describe how these beliefs harm us and give us rational alternatives to them. There are also many anecdotes of people who have used "rational thinking" to lose weight.

As someone who has participated in Overeater's Anonymous, I found this book to be liberating. I felt more powerful and in control simply by reading it. I was always uncomfortable with the idea of being powerless over my eating, and now I realize this concept won't work for me personally. The Trimpeys are not expressing new ideas here. Indeed, the concept of changing limiting or irrational beliefs about yourself and the world is a psychological concept known as Rational Emotive Therapy or RET. But it is helpful to see it used specifically for problems with overeating.

If the book has one fault it is that the authors say more than once that examining your past and possible emotional reasons for overeating is useless. The size of your hips is due to the food you put into your mouth, not to a dysfuntional childhood. While I agree that my hips don't care about my childhood, I do think that it has been helpful for me to examine my emotional pain and where it comes from. It helps me to see that food was not the cause nor will it be the solution to my problems.

If you've been struggling with compulsive overeating, this book is one you should plan on reading.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Approach for an Age-old problem.......2001-01-28

The Trimpeys aren't going to be popular among all the myriad therapists, treatment centers, fat farms, diet gurus and "experts" like Susan Powter and Richard Simmons who are making fortunes at the expense of desperate dieters. What this book manages to so ably point out is that every person who has successfully lost weight and kept it off permanently did so from a Big Plan - NOT through the "support" of any group such as Weight Watchers, Overeaters Anonymous or the like. It was an INDIVIDUAL CHOICE backed up by individual effort and initiative. The Trimpeys help the reader find that motivation and reinforce the will to recover from binge eating by recognizing and seeing through the Voice of Fatness. While there are no easy answers or magic pills, there IS a rational choice which we can learn to make for ourselves. By debunking the irrational beliefs surrounding compulsive eating, discarding worthless theories about the origins of our problems, and directly confronting that internal voice masquerading as our own mind we can triumph over the whole kit and kaboodle.

5 out of 5 stars A book that makes sense!.......1997-11-30

If you want another diet book that includes what or what not to eat, don't read this book. This book is not your ordinary book full of diet tips and exercise strategies. It's a powerful book concerning addiction and how to rationally overcome the addiction. It gives you a plan of action to conquer that voice that SCREAMS at you when you want to binge. The language is not techniqual and boring but straightforward. If you are a binge eater, this is a must read book.

4 out of 5 stars 100 compelling reasons to keep getting up in the morning.......2007-05-10

Steve Chandler is an insistent, unabashed optimist, in the same vein as Norman Vincent Peale. He covers 100 motivational tips that stretch the imagination, factor in the impact of technology, and challenge you to evaluate your situation from different points of view. The choices you make can either motivate you or hinder you, so he provides a wide array of tips you can embrace, reject, or simply read and digest. You can implement the games and exercises to make working toward your dream goal more fun. Though much of the content is basic and available in other self-help books, we recommend this breezy paperback; you can carry it in your briefcase and open it up randomly if you're feeling low and want to get rejuvenated and motivated.

5 out of 5 stars Motivation.......2007-03-17

This is a great tool to keep you moving. Easy ideas that do work. Steve Chandler makes motivating myself so much more simple than and it is an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Best self-help book in my collection, period........2006-11-28

I was raised to revere books and not mark them up, but every single one of my Steve Chandler books have highlighted passages in them, and the most highlighted and underlined of them all is "100 Ways..."! What distinguishes Chandler from other motivational writers is his extensive familiarity with the British author and philosopher Colin Wilson, and Steve has adapted Wilson's philosophy into readily usable techniques. (Some of the negative reviews I've read here seem to be about the audio version of this book. I haven't heard it, so I can't comment. But I heartily recommend the BOOK version of this book.)

Book Description

Are you a Diet Survivor? Maybe your whole life seems to revolve around diets and weight focus. Perhaps even attempts at non-dieting have failed. This book will help you find your own inner wisdom, and a path to normal eating.

Binge eating, emotional eating, stress eating, and just plain overeating are often made worse by a dieting mentality, not cured by it. External changes just aren't enough. That's why even non-dieting can backfire.

Unlike willpower, the work lies instead in changing how you think about food, stress, and emotions. And happily, you can stay in the present day. No need to delve into childhood memories or deep emotions.

Using principles of cognitive therapy, you will learn to adjust the self-talk that accompanies dysfunctional eating. Self-talk such as "I must drink this diet soda in order to get thin," "my children must not have junk in the house," "my emotional eating will never end," and "I can't tolerate stress," have little basis in reality and lead to failure.

After some work at replacing your beliefs with facts, you will start to find your own food wisdom again. Maybe you haven't had this wisdom since you were a baby, but it's still inside you. And you will learn to think in shades of gray, instead of the black and white thinking that is typical of folks with dysfunctional eating.

Learn how to know when you are hungry and full, and how to be a picky eater, perhaps for the first time in your life. With practice, you will find that small, perfect, delicious portions do satisfy. Just as importantly, learn how you can cope with stress and emotions without running to the refrigerator. Learn to apply your mind to rational thought.

No longer will you feel that your body has betrayed you. You will once again be able to trust your body and mind to lead you to your ideal weight. You will never again have to bow to a diet as if it were some kind of god. Instead, any diet you choose will be your slave, not your master. In fact, as you finally free yourself from your attachment to food and dieting, your body will seek its ideal weight with no formal diet at all.

Regardless of whether or not you are overweight, if you have any kind of food issues such as emotional eating, stress eating, eating in secret, exercise addiction, using food for control, night eating, diet addiction, scale addiction, or binge eating disorder, this book is for you. Eating issues are more hidden than people realize, and are not always evidenced in one's appearance. Indeed, eating issues reside in our hearts and minds, not our stomachs.

This book is a fun, easy read that could change your life. Join the growing club of Diet Survivors.

I liked Linda's book, it is very easy to read and Linda is very down to earth about the whole issue.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it's weight in Gold!.......2007-08-09

I have read many books on the subject of diets and dieting and I have to say this book was by far the best. It is written in an informal and personal yet intelligent way. I believe there isn't a dieter/former dieter out there who couldn't relate to Linda's story and all the thoughts, feelings and emotions behind chronic dieting. If your tired of struggling with food and diets, or if you feel like you just don't know what to do next... then How to Survive Your Diet and Conquer Your Food Issues Forever is a great choice.

5 out of 5 stars Down to earth advice.......2007-08-08

This is one of the most clear and concise presentations of intuitive eating I have come across so far. The author shares her experience and insights with regard to re-establishing a normal relationship with food. It's clear that she understands the whole dieting mindset/lifestyle that many of us have experienced, with multiple cyles of on-again, off-again, self-blame, looking for that magic pill, etc. In this book she offers a way to become free of obsession with food and actually just live a life.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing special here..........2007-06-25

I don't know what exactly I was expecting from this book, but I didn't get it.

I certainly wasn't expecting a magic fix-it, but was hoping for something new. There is nothing new here.

The author's groundbreaking discoveries include:
-The reason people gain weight are from greed eating and stress eating.
-The way to lose weight and keep it off is to learn portion control.

Why this information was life-changing to some people, I'll never understand. The only reason I gave this book 2 stars instead of 1 is that she summarizes and compares many diet plans. So basically, others have done the work for her and she's just compiled it.

I'm happy Mrs. Moran found a way to lose and keep off her weight- a whopping 22 lbs.

Yes, her high weight was 142 at 5'2, and she is now 120. Good for her. Yes, 142 is a bit heavy for a woman of her stature, but I wonder how many women with serious weight problems will buy her book expecting to read about someone who actually had the kind of weight problem they do, only to be told in the last chapter that this is not true. Again, I am happy she is at a healthy weight, I just feel that this book had practically nothing to offer the targeted audience, or anyone else for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars Finally the answer.......2007-03-15

After a huge mistake of buying a currently hyped diet book which turned out to be WORTHLESS, somehow I came on this book and I found in it the answer for the eating problem I have wrestled with near all my life. I cannot even begin to tell you how good this book is and what it has done, and is doing for me. In it is all I need to know and do to be a normal eater. Finally!
