Book Description
Everything is going great for Suze. Her new life in California is a whirlwind of parties and excellent hair days. Tad Beaumont, the hottest boy in town, has even asked Suze out on her very first date. Suze is so excited that she's willing to ignore her misgivings about Tad... particularly the fact that he's not Jesse, whose ghostly status—not to mention apparent disinterest in her—make him unattainable.
What Suze can't ignore, however, is the ghost of a murdered woman whose death seems directly connected to dark secrets hidden in none other than Tad Beaumont's past.

"There's no such thing as ghosts". At least, that's what the scientific community believes. High school sophomore Susannah Simon wishes she could agree. She's only lived in sunny California for two weeks, and already her life's a whirlwind of pool parties, excellent hair days, and new friends. Oh, yeah ... and her stepbrothers. But otherwise, things are going fab. Until the ghost of a dead woman shows up at her bedside, screaming and begging Suze to find "Red" and tell him that he isn't responsible for her death. Tracking down a murderer isn't exactly easy, especially when the clues that Suze pieces together lead straight to the father of Tad Beaumont, the cutest and richest boy in school ... and the first boy who's ever asked Suze out. Oops.

A Good Sequel.......2007-08-07
Book #2 in the Mediator series by Meg Cabot opens about a week after the first book ended. Suze, mediator at large, is suddenly visited in the middle of the night by a screaming ghost begging her to tell "Red" that she knows he didn't kill her. With a cryptic message like that, Suze checks around to find out who might be called Red, leading her to a prominent businessman and his hunky son, Tad. Delivering her message is easier said than done, and Suze becomes uneasy when she's rushed out of the strange home of Red Beaumont (even though she's definitely attracted to Tad). Imagine her surprise when the ghost reappears, accusing her of not delivering the message at all, and she runs into a second ghost who tells her Beaumont is responsible for HER death. What's going on? Does Suze have the right person? Is Red Beaumont a cold-blooded murderer? Is he a vampire? What about Jesse, the hot ghost living in her bedroom? Will Tad ask her out?
This is a very good sequel to the first book in this series. Suze is finding an ally in Father Dominic, a fellow mediator, and her circle of friends is growing in her new home. We also meet her father, a ghost who has traveled across the country to give his daughter advice. This story, while of course focusing on the mediator aspect, also brings Suze into a more complex mystery and shows us her survival skills outside of her ghostly talents. There's a pretty good twist towards the end, and the tension between Suze and Jesse is intensifying. This is a fun series, not meant to be taken too seriously, and I look forward to reading more. Surprisingly well done, if you enjoy paranormal romance and suspense, you'll definitely like this one.
Not very good, in my opinion.......2007-08-04
I really enjoyed the first book in the series, ( Shadowland (The Mediator, Book 1) ) it seemed unique enough. But this one... well first I'd like to point out that in this book Meg Cabot repeats a lot of things she said in the first book. I mean yes I suppose it's nice to make the books so you really dont have to start at the beginning of the series to understand what is going on, but there is a fine line between that, and repeating an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH WORD FOR WORD from the first book ( which Cabot DID do ). During most of this book it seemed to me that Meg Cabot just did not know what to write. It all seems like she just improvised, and, most of it is repeated stuff from Shadowland ( if not word for word, than the basic idea of it ). Thankfully, in the later books this doesnt happen so often, so if you can bare through this one, than the series is over all pretty interesting.
Also, it gets very annoying how obsessed Suze is with getting a boyfriend; like its the only thing that matters, ever. And how being a Mediator " Is so horrible Oh i just wish I was normal " ( This continues on throughout the series ).

After moving from her New York home to Carmel, California, Suze's life is finally looking up!
Her days are filled by parties and good hair days - what every teenage girl can relate to wanting. The only thing that Suze wants to change about herself is the fact that she can see ghosts who want to pass messages along to friends or family. She is a mediator.
Even though everything seems to be going her way, Suze has a ghost that seems to be connected to Tad Beaumont, the hottest guy in town, who also happens to have asked her out. Suze just can't understand what Tad and this ghost have to do with each other.
And then she meets Tad's father.
NINTH KEY is the second book in THE MEDIATOR series, following Shadowland (The Mediator, Book 1), and is a fun addition to your bookshelf. There is a good mix of ghosts, romance, and creepy characters! Another fun Meg Cabot book!

This is another great book by Cabot! I can't really say much except that it had a bunch of twists and turns. First all evidence says this guy was a killer, but WAIT no its this guy, WAIT it could be either...the whole book was like that. Exciting, different, and exactly what book lovers want. I LOVED it! I definately reccomend it!
a good book.......2006-06-28
This book is good a little scattered in places , and the plot is kinda all over the place but it still is a really good book.

Amazing.......2007-06-28
Shadowland by Mag Cabot is one of the best adventure books I have read in a long time. Suze Simon can see and talk to the dead, but only long enough to help resolve their unfinished business. Her mother has just remarried and has forced Suze to move from New York to California. All Suze wants is a chance to start over, away from her freak reputation caused by her ghostly dealings. That is hard to do, however, when she comes across two ghosts within a week; Jesse, the hot, hundred-fifty-year-old haunting her bedroom, and Heather, the teen ghost who is out for revenge, and Suze just happens to be in her way.
Shadowland is a fantastic book full of witty dialogue, action, adventure, suspense, and a hint of romance. The story has enough twists and turns to keep readers guessing until the end. The suspense will keep them reading into the night anticipating what might happen next. Overall, this was a terrific book that will lead readers straight into the second.
The first book..........2007-05-27
The story is about a girl, suze who is a mediator between the living and the dead. She moves from new york to sunny california to live with her mother and new stepfather. At first it looks prosperous and suze thinks she can start anew [ghost free] but soon realizes there are ghosts everywhere. Now this book had both some good and bad qualities to it. Let me start with the good. The story was very in depth and the idea is great. But theres some bad points to this also. The characters seemed a little 2-dimensional and a tad stereotypical. There were the jocks, the geeks, ect. You dont really find out about suze's past that much which leaves some questions. Overall it was a good book but also a forgetful one.

Why not help kids out a little bit?.......2007-01-09
Meg Cabot's books are great... it wasn't my favorite series ever but hey, they were still good. But I'm not writing about the books. I'm writing about the search pages. Yahoo, Amazon, Google, etc. they haven't been giving the list of characters. I have a report due tomorrow, and I read the book months ago... ( the teacher gave us a due date & then changed it til after Christmas)... I can't remember what that girl's ghost's name is... I mean come on... would it kill you to give a list of the main characters!!!! Grrrrrrrrrr! O, & by the way... that isn't my real e-mail address. :-P
One of the BEST series to hook reluctant teen readers!.......2006-12-01
I'm a librarian at a school for kids grades 2-12, and the Mediator series has had an amazing effect on our middle school/high school readers. I love to hook our students on series--that way, they know what they'll be reading next.
Combining action, adventure, the supernatural, a little romance and mystery, and a strong female main character, this series has it all! I've always had a difficult time getting my male students to read books with female main characters, but this series has broken that rule as well. The 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU series by Meg Cabot is a close second to this series and another great series for middle/high school students.

Great Book.......2007-04-09
Such an awsome book the whole series is great everyone who loves romance action all in one should read!
A Ghostly Good Read!!.......2007-03-08
I really enjoyed reading this book. It has lots of great details. When Susannah found out about this murder, she just had to investigate it. With the help of Father Dom and Jesse she finally got the killer but was put into hospital. It would help if you read the first two books or else you will get really confused with all the names and places. This book has lots of twists and turns and will keep you reading. You won't want to put it down!
OMG! what a GREAT book!!!!!.......2007-02-11
whoa!! this book is SO amazing! it's about this girl, suze, and her supposed boyfriend, michael meducci, and he could be a possible killer of the RLS angels! he has had a grudge against them and only for one reason that he could be able to kill them; jealousy! jesse and father dominic have helped out quite a bit but not enough that suze ends up in the hospital! i HIGHLY recommend this book! and i cannot wait to read the next one!!!!
The Mediator 3: Reunion.......2006-12-21
The Mediator 3: Reunion is about Suze Simon, a fifteen-year-old girl with a very special gift, she can speak to those beyond the grave. Awesome, right? Wrong. Ghosts aren't always the most cooperative people. So, when Suze tries to help four teenage ghosts that were in a car accident, they aren't very thankful, unless you'd say that trying to kill her is a proper "thank you". However, Suze will find out some secrets about someone she never thought would keep them from her and that this car accident might not have been an accident at all.
This book teaches readers always to be happy with who they are. Suze has to try to accept that she is a mediator and has to adapt to being haunted every day of her life. She's spunky and her attitude is as unpredictable as the weather but she's also very generous and always willing to help. It really shows people how we take everyday things for granted.
Meg Cabot does an extraordinary job with this book with a perfect balance of mystery, teen troubles, and family issues. It takes you deep into Suze's life and feelings. I couldn't pry my fingers off of it. The Mediator is an amazing series and I've read most of them, but this one was by far my favorite. So, if you like suspense and surprises, you'll love The Mediator 3: Reunion.
okay.......2006-04-21
This book was interesting to me and usually I don't read books like this but it is appealing. I like the characters and the style of writing that meg cabot uses. But I just didn't like the way the ending turned out but I still want to read the rest of the series.

My daughter got me hooked on this series and I was surprised at the great writing.
the best of the series ... so far.......2006-07-12
I love this book , and I love the character Jesse. This book is nothing but nonstop action and thrills , and some parts are so sad , and how Suze does to get Jesse back is certainly is unexpected. Although the new character Paul is very intriguing and I like his character , I can't wait to read the next book to find out about him.And I love the ending . Meg cabot really undone herself this time!
The Mediator .......2006-04-24
The fourth book of the series The Mediator did not fail to deliver a great and wonderful thrill. Susannah is still trying to live a normal teenage life without any ghosts interfering, besides Jesse her ghost friend that haunts her room. Susannah soon finds out its going to be harder than she thought, when she discovers a young boy who is a mediator just like herself. Things also get worse when she discovers that the young kid's brother Paul has a crush on Susannah.
While she is trying to deal with all this stuff, her stepbrothers accidentally dig up Jesse's dead body in their backyard. Since Jesse's body was discovered Jesse has no reason to stick around in the real world and gets sent to the ghost world. Now Susannah wants to bring Jesse back to the real world, but when Susannah finds out that Jesse was killed by his girlfriend many years ago, Jesse's girlfriend comes back from the dead to try to stop Susannah from finding out anything else. How is Susannah going to get Jesse back and deal with everything that's going on at the same time? Read the book to find out
I loved this book this was the best book of the series so far, because it added new enemies that Susannah has to worry about. I liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes mystery and action books. I would also tell them to read the whole series first because they are all good books.

This is a very good book full of information, and stories, I most captivated by the illustrations. A wonderful book to add to your collection.
Beautifully illustrated mythology.......2004-12-09
This book is one in Time Life Books' The Enchanted World series. Each of these books covers a different aspect of folklore and mythology, and they are an excellent set. They tell stories in a similar format and complement each other well without repeating the content. Each is about 140 pages.
This is a beautifully illustrated well printed volume. Artists include Matt Mahurin, John Collier, John Jude Palencar, Marshall Arisman, John Howe, Kunio Hagio, Michael Paraskevas, Brian McCall, Gary Kelly, Willi Glasauer, Yvonne Gilbert and Sam Bayer. Older depictions of night creatures are mixed in, including Henry Fuseli's Nightmare.
Stories are retold in a style that makes for a good read. These stories come from all over the world. Often there will be smaller illustrations and captions in the margins to the main story. These tell variations of the story and related stories from other cultures.
This is a beautifully bound and printed book. The binding is just cloth to collectors, but it is printed to look like a wizard's book. The cover shows a dragon holding a picture of a spooky night creature (I think its a vampire). I think it was the cover that got me reading this when I was child (this would be for older children because of the spooky nature).
Chapters include:
Perilous Paths through the Dark: A reckoning with Fianna's ancient bane
Visitations from the Realm of the Shadow: Charting the kingdom of dreams
Blood Feasts of the Da__ed: Nightstalker of Croglin Grange
The Way of the Werebeast: The fox maiden
This is a well researched nicely produced series. For me one book in the series (I think it was Fairies) had me hooked. If you are interested in mythology and all things magic then it is definitely worth trying out the series. High school and middle school libraries should consider the series. Some books might cause issues since they are about the occult, but some like The Legend of Camelot book will be completely Kosher.
Great way of knowing what people used to think of the night........2002-11-09
Excellent book, with beautiful pictures representing the stories. This book describes everyones hidden fears of what goes bump in the night all the way back to the beginning of recorded history.

"
Suze has gotten used to ghosts. They wake her up in the middle of the night. They haunt her locker at school. She's even spotted a few down at Carmel Beach. Suze is a mediator, after all, and communicating with the dead is all in a day's work for her. The last thing she ever expected was to fall in love with one: Jesse, a nineteenth-century hottie.
But when she and Paul Slater, himself a mediator of undeniable power (and dubious intent), discover that the powers they share aren't limited to helping ghosts resolve their earthly woes, but can also be used to determine whether or not they become ghosts in the first place, Suze can't help but freak. Not because she suddenly knows how to alter the course of history, but because Paul can, too. And Paul would like nothing better than to prevent Jesse's murder, keeping him from becoming a ghost and allowing him to live a natural life at last ... but in the nineteenth century. Meaning Jesse and Suze would never meet.
Suddenly, Suze is faced with the most important decision of her life: allow the only guy she's ever loved to have the life he's always longed for ... or keep him anchored forever in half-life at her side. Will Jesse choose to live without her, or die to love her?

I love the mediator books so much and I want them to go to book seven maybe even ten. I've gotten addicted to them and I don't want them to end at 6.
Mediator # 6 Twilight.......2007-07-13
The story line continues and this book is just as exciting and exhiliarating as the rest in this series. I would highly recommend this book and the previous in this series. Excellent read!!!!
Good, but not the best in the series........2007-06-13
This series is a lot of fun to read, but I did feel that the ending was a little too perfect. Everything tied up in a perfect bow. Throughout the book, I felt that the story was lacking a good central plot to work around. From the beginning, we knew Paul was up to something, and shortly after, we knew what it was, but for some reason, Suze couldn't figure out the obvious. Suze was just confused and unsure and shallow most of this book which is very unlike her character. However, the ending was just what the reader would wnat and I am very glad I read the book. I liked the series so much I had to read all of it in one week. Read it, but it isn't the best in the series, but you'll be happy with the ending. I am left wanting to understand Paul better, but maybe that is for another series. :)
V.Z........2007-01-25
I thought the sixth and final book in the mediator books was an awesome book. It solved all the questions I had about what was going to happen in the end, and it answered them in a very unexpected and extremely pleasing way. I totally recommend this book, but I recommend reading the first five Mediator books before reading this one so you have a better idea of what is going on.
Great Book!!!!.......2006-11-07
This is one of my all-time favorite books! I LOVE Meg Cabot and ALL of her books! I highly recommend reading this! But make sure you read the 5 before this one or it'll be ruined! Really read this book! It's great!

Book Description
Hannah thinks tonight's Passover Seder will be the same as always. Little does she know that this year she will be mysteriously transported into the past where only she knows the horrors that await.
Customer Reviews:
The Devil's Arithmetic.......2007-09-02
Hannah is a young woman, thirteen years old and a fairly normal sounding teenager. She has no true understanding of her family's culture, or of the memories that are in her blood, ones shares and must not forget. Hannah is reborn into Chaya, as she is taken from a normal, rural life in 1942, into one of the Nazi death camps. We watch as the daily struggles for life transform this teenagers understanding of her world, what it has become and what it was. The glimpses of her true time period, the 1980's, are seen as madness in the camps, but she speaks truth. And she remembers the most important gift of all. Chaya gives up her life for Hannah's ancestor, Rivka, so she may escape to live her life. I enjoyed the family future and past connections; it made the book at that more personal since the readers become so close to her extended family, all in both versions of time. The deep emotions this book brings to the surface would take a careful working, well versed teacher. But this book is told in a way that is an accurate, as well as age appropriate way of explaining, in first person, some of the atrocities that humans can do to one another. On page 163, where Hannah is back in her own time and explains to Aunt Eva what the numbers on her arm mean, I almost started crying. What a powerful way to end the book. "J18202. J is for Jew. And 1 because you were alone, alone of the 8 who had been in your family, though 2 was the actual number of them alive..."
Not Enough Depth.......2007-08-26
This was a good book, but it wasn't as informative as I had hoped it would be.
Great book...made me cry.......2007-03-21
I read this in 7th grade some years ago and I couldn't help but cry in class and hope in the future this doesn't happen again. At that time, I knew about the holocaust pretty well and seeing a movie called Paperclips the previous year I say I knew enough, but this book showed it in a simpler way. It was in a view of a girl around my age then or so and it was so very emotional and powerful. This is a great book to read or lend to a friend to show them a part of a history. You learn that Jews are people aswell like any others and they can be a spanish jew, english jew, american jew and so on. It isn't an ethnic/race, it's a religion. Killing Jews then is like killing Catholics right now or any other religion. Jews did nothing wrong, but even today I know some people that hate them, but for no reason, only because they were taught to or what their family believed. After I lended this book to some friends, they understood more.
Overall, this is a great book, which can not only be enjoyed by teenagers, preteens and such, but for adults aswell. You understand it more than by just reading history books, this gives you a story to go along with it and it stays in your mind and doesn't go away like when you study for a one time exam and it is no use to you after you ace the test. This is a really must read.
The Devil's Arithmetic.......2007-03-13
The more that are added the more that are subtracted...
"The devil's arithmetic," that was what Gitl called it. Everyday, more and more Zungangi arrive at the camps. Everyday more Jews are chosen. The more in the camps the less in the world. Adding and subtracting. The children think the work is hard, but the Jews hated it because they subtracted lives and added Jews to the horror.
It all started when Hannah, a young Jewish girl, resented going to her family's traditions. She symbolically opened the door to the prophet Elijah after she drank too much wine at her family's Passover Seder. She is transported back in time to 1942, just before the Holocaust. The Nazis came and took the Jews away. Hannah tried to warn people about the concentration camps but nobody believed her. Hannah learned why all of her relatives were so upset about the numbers on their left arms.
The Devil's Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen, was very descriptive and touching, especially when Chaya makes a sacrifice -a big one- for family, friends, and religion. This was a fabulous insight on what really happened in the Holocaust. This book made you feel like you were really in the concentration camps and you could almost hear the harsh voices and smell the horrible smells of blood and sweat.
We highly recommend this book for readers of all ages. It gives you a whole other opinion on the Holocaust and lets you really know how horrible it was and how many people died long, slow, painful deaths. It makes you cry, laugh, smile, and opens up a whole new point of view.
Sucked Into the Past a review by James, Taylor, Jonahthan, Sebastianne, Rebecca, and Danilo.......2007-03-13
Picture this, you are a thirteen year old girl who hates going to her family Seder. You're forced to go anyway, and you open the door for the prophet Elijah. In the award winning (National Jewish Book Award) novel the Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen, weird things start to happen. Jane Yolen captivates the heart and soul in each and every reader, ensuring that readers will be delighted to the fullest.
The Devil's Arithmetic is about a girl named Hannah at her Passover Seder she opens the door to the prophet Elijah and ends up in a small village in 1942. It's during the second World War, before this Hannah lives in New Rochelle with her father, mother, and little brother. But after that fateful night, when she was hurled into the past she became different. People keep confusing her with someone else, a girl named Chaya. They talk about her parents, dead from Cholera and a place called Lublin. But her parents are fine aren't they? At a wedding,Hannah, the bride, groom, and everyone else are captured by the Nazi's and taken to concentration camps. Once there, Hannah doesn't know past from present. In this book Hannah goes from being selfish to fighting for the Jews, being strong although people have lost all hope, and being brave even though she knows only fate lie ahead. Jane Yolen brings the past into the present with this dynamic book that draws you into the setting. It makes you want to cry, and in the end sigh with relief. This book tells you to never give up and to be grateful for what you have. It is a lesson on how cruel people can really be.
Everyone will enjoy this captivating book about survival. I would recommend this book to kids age 11 and up. People who enjoy history and survival books will appreciate this astounding story about the Holocaust by the wonderful author Jane Yolen.

Book Description
Buffy thought she'd finished the Master when she dusted him. But in Sunnydale things have a way of coming back. . . . The Master may be dead, but he is not forgotten. One of the vampire lord's devotees sets out to alter the past so that he can resurrect the Master without Buffy's meddling. When he conjures up a portal to transport his minions through time, the vampires
are poised to murder the most powerful slayers in history!
It is up to the Scoobies to stop the Master's followers before they break the chain of slayers. Giles, Xander, Willow, and Buffy pursue the vamps back in time through the portal to save the slayers of the past. They must track the bloodsuckers from the French Revolution to the American Civil War without getting detected -- or worse!
But you can't change the past without changing the present. . . .
Customer Reviews:
The Best Buffy Ever!.......2007-09-12
This is an awesome book. I really enjoyed the Civil War scenes. It was a fast-paced page-turner. The main character, Buffy, traveled through time saving historical slayers from time traveling assassins. Each time period was well written with a suspenseful, thought-provoking ending. This is well worth picking up.
not the best Buffy novel.......2007-08-31
I thought that the plot jumped around a lot; nothing seemed to conclude. The characters were moving through time; I would have preferred a series of novels, one dealing with each time period, to one book that tried to cover so much.
When History and the Sunnydale Slayer Collide, Duck and Cover!.......2007-03-21
Those of us who are still mourning the end of our favorite show ever, a loss which ocurred in 2003, can take solace in the fact that the novelizations based on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" continue well past the show's end -- and they're still good!
"Portal Through Time" takes Buffy and Scoobies on a wild adventure through history. After Buffy defeated the Master and ground his bones to ash, she thought that was the end of it -- but she was mistaken. A few loyal followers of the Master have discovered a way to rip a hole in the fabric of time, and travel back in the past to try to change the outcome of the Master's demise. After killing Buffy herself at a point in time before she became the Slayer didn't have the desired effect, they discovered that in order to stop her from destroying their Master they need to go farther back in time and kill past Slayers in order to create a chain of events that would change history forever! Buffy and company must follow these rogue vampires back in time and stop them from succeeding!
Like the recent Buffy novel "Bad Bargain", this book is actually set during Season 2, just prior to Angel's shift to evil. However, unlike "Bad Bargain", this book also doesn't have the added fun of alluding to future events from the show. Instead, it likes to throw a few references to things and events that took place before this novel, in reference to it's place on the season 2 timeline (which, by my estimate, must be just after the episode "Bad Eggs", but before "Innocence"). Even though it would have been nice to see the extra effort of adding those little winks and hints to the story, I can also see how it would have been quite difficult to do while taking on this gargantuine storyline.
The book itself is very entertaining, and I tend to be a little critical of my Buffy novels. It also helps if you're a bit of a history buff, like myself, because the majority of the book deals with certain people, places, and events that are important to our history -- such as the Roman invasion of the British Isles, the ancient Sumerian city of Uruk and it's most famous king, Gilgamesh, and even the American civil war and the bloody battle of Shiloh. These historical aspects are all beautifully incorporated into the novel, but are also kept light enough so as not to alienate readers who don't have a partcular likeing for history (I'm an anti-math girl myself). With the elements of time travel, this novel is a lot of fun!
At times the dialogue seems to regress into a sort of clipped, amateur version found mostly in Buffy fanfiction, but I think most of that is due to the efforts of the author trying to re-create the Season 2 atmosphere. When it comes to writing a book based on such a popular TV show, I imagine it's quite difficult for an author to write a novel where they needed to, for the most part, completely ignore all the character development that takes place *after* the setting of their novel. If you think about it, the dialogue of the characters in season 2 is *quite* different than the dialogue in season 7.
Forgiving the occasional mistep with the flow of the dialogue, I think this was a great Buffy novel, and fellow fans will enjoy it!
LOVE THE CONCEPT BUT..........2007-01-20
If you don't like SPOILERS, don't read on... Near the end of the story, when Buffy actually gets to battle Angelus and Darla (which was a genius twist, btw!), the Scoobies were wondering how to save Angelus from getting killed so as not to alter the future. The solution Henderson gave was for Buffy to write a letter to him which says that he shouldn't go with Darla to a fight in the alley if he values his life. It was signed, a friend. And yes, Angelus chose not to go with Darla. If Henderson wanted to remain true to Angelus' character, she would know that he just won't back away from any fight, most especially that "an unknown friend" wrote it. Angelus should have been suspicious and knowing his arrogance and particularly since he was supposed to bag 2 slayers, he wouldn't give up that easily. He should have at the very least tried to see who wrote the letter... Well, the book was off to a good start but the ending wasn't done masterfully. Still, since I love collecting Buffy books, this is still worth a read. I would've given it 3.5 stars... due to the ending. The time portal concept is a good one but if you look throughout the book, there are still some inconsistencies with regard to the "rules" of time travel. For one, the author said that no matter what time they followed the vamps, it wouldn't matter coz they would arrive at almost the same time as the vamps. But when you think about it, it should matter because if the vamps already did something to alter the future, then it goes to show that the present that they are now in would have changed. So that means that the sooner the gang followed the vamps, the better to not alter the future. But, if you really don't get too technical about it, the storyline is still good.
Time Well Spent.......2006-12-27
The first few seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer have always been my favorite, so I'm particularly interested in books set during those early years. Henderson fixes this tale during Buffy's junior year at Sunnydale High, which means we get plenty of Giles, Xander, Willow and Angel along with the Slayer (the only disappointment is that Oz has not entered into the Scooby Gang picture yet).
This is a rousing, rollicking tale that takes the gang back into the past to save four of Buffy's Slayer predecessors from time traveling assassins. But although this is technically a Young Adult book, author Henderson pulls no punches with a lot of the violence, which is entirely appropriate, as Buffy finds herself at various points in the middle of a Roman invasion of a Druid stronghold, the French Revolution, and the American Civil War, and there's no sugarcoating the inhumane butchery that real life battle inflicts. It's a stark parallel to Buffy's usual 'dust the vampires' comic book-style look at death, and it adds an added depth to the story.
But what makes the book really work for me is that Alice Henderson has found the "voices" of Buffy and her friends, and it's a delight just to read the dialog between them. This is a terrific story, very deftly crafted by a very talented author.

Truth be told, Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's picture book The Wolves in the Walls is terrifying. Sure, the story is fairytale-like and presented in a jaunty, casually nonsensical way, but it is absolutely the stuff of nightmares. Lucy hears wolves hustling, bustling, crinkling, and crackling in the walls of the old house where her family lives, but no one believes her. Her mother says it's mice, her brother says bats, and her father says what everyone seems to say, "If the wolves come out of the walls, it's all over." Lucy remains convinced, as is her beloved pig-puppet, and her worst fears are confirmed when the wolves actually do come out of the walls.
Up to this point, McKean's illustrations are spectacular, sinister collages awash in golden sepia tones evocative of the creepy beauty in The City of Lost Children. The wolves explode into the story in scratchy pen-and-ink, all jaws and eyes. The family flees to the cold, moonlit garden, where they ponder their future. (Her brother suggests, for example, that they escape to outer space where there's "nothing but foozles and squossucks for billions of miles.") Lucy wants to live in her own house...and she wants the pig-puppet she left behind.
Eventually she talks her family into moving back into the once-wolfish walls, where they peek out at the wolves who are watching their television and spilling popcorn on slices of toast and jam, dashing up the stairs, and wearing their clothes. When the family can't stand it anymore, they burst forth from the walls, scaring the wolves, who shout, "And when the people come out of the walls, it's all over!" The wolves flee and everything goes back to normal...until the tidy ending when Lucy hears "a noise that sounded exactly like an elephant trying not to sneeze." Adult fans of this talented pair will revel in the quirky story and its darkly gorgeous, deliciously shadowy trappings, but the young or faint of heart, beware! (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson

A delight for all ages.......2007-05-05
I don't think I really fell in love with this book until I started reading it aloud to my daughter. I remember reading it to myself first and thinking it was clever and witty and had beautiful illustrations, but when I read it for her for the first time I found myself taking on the different voices of the characters and making sounds effects and really letting the story take us both elsewhere for a while.
It's a simple story: young Lucy hears noises in the walls of her house, and she is convinced that there are wolves living there. None of her family believes her and dismiss her concerns, but she maintains her belief. When the wolves (of course they really are there!) come out of the walls, they do what any wolves would do -- chase the family away and take over the house, wearing the family's clothes and playing video games and eating toast and jam in front of the television with the volume as loud as it would go. The family, with nowhere else to go but led by clever Lucy, has to take their turn inside the walls of their house.
It is as smart, funny, and canny of a book as we might expect from Gaiman (who is often at his best when writing in the short form like this) and is accompanied perfectly by McKean's unique style of illustration, well suited to the story.
But as good as it is, believe me when I say it gets ten times better when you read it aloud for someone. Watching a child's eyes as they get engrossed in the story, as they get excited in the parts where the wolves finally appear, as they sparkle with laughter when they see what the wolves are doing, is its own brand of magic. Once they learn the story (which does not take long, Gaiman makes it easy for them), you'll find them reading parts of it with you, like the repeated statement about what happens when the wolves come out of the walls: "It's All Over!"
My youngest daughter now requests that I read 'The Wolves in the Walls' to her nightly, and if that doesn't tell you this is a great book for kids, nothing else will. And, because I love it too and I love reading it to her, I do.
This is a very, very special book to us.
Things that go bump in the night.......2007-02-04
The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Dave McKean is great. What a wonderful little book! The Wolves in the Walls is about what may be behind those things that go bump in the night. It's the story of a young girl named Lucy who hears wolves in the walls. Of course, her parents don't believe her until the wolves come out, and then all hell breaks loose. This is a great book for children who are afraid of night time noises. It shows that the source of the noises may be just as scared of you as you are of them. It's beautifull illustrated by Dave McKean. Like The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish, The Wolves in the Walls can easily be mistaken for an art book. I don't think there's a better Writer/Artist duo than Gaiman and McKean. If you haven't already read this one, do yourself a favor and give it a read. There was a play put on not too long ago that was based on this book and unfortunately I didn't get to see it as it didn't come anywhere near New Orleans. I would've really enjoyed that.
Pictures that talk.......2007-01-12
Gaiman-McKean, superb combination as usual.
Honestly, I don't read picture books, but I bought this cute book
to my girlfriend, (as a present for a New Year) because she is also an illustrator and she makes that kind of stuff. (She liked it).
But let's get back to the book.
Mr. McKean's artwork is fascinating as always.
Nice mix of photos, paintings and drawings.
Storyline is crazy, like some short trip into dreamworld.
I won't describe it ofcourse, you can get it from the net.
I liked the balance between the light and the dark part of book.
The light part is when everything was still allright, (before the wolves came), and the dark part is afterwards.
McKean gives us a nice light colours in the beginning, and later, takes us to the night and chills of this interesting short story.
I didn't read much stuff by Mr. Gaiman, (I prefer King, Barker etc) except those Sandman series, and other comix and graphic novels, that I liked also, but never his books and his picture books.
This is first pic book I saw, and I must say that it's great, really.
As an graphic novels author and comics teacher I prefer that kind of stuff, but I'll say to you, give it a try, it's OK for the collection,if you like the work of Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman.
But remember, it's for children!
Oh the horror - TV watching, jam eating, video game playing wolves!.......2006-09-10
This book is so comical I don't see how anyone could really find it disturbing. Sure, the wolves come out of the walls and the family decides to leave but what silly party animals these wolves are. And of course we find that the wolves are actually terrified of the humans as in "when the humans come out of the walls it is all over" The family gets their home back with just some humorous "losses" (a wolf has beat brother's high score on his video game) and a bit of cleaning up to do. The ending has been done again and again and I took it more as a satire of typical children's picture books rather than Mr. Gaiman and Mr. McKean wanting to start an "in the walls" franchise. I think this book would be perfect to use with fifth grade/middle school kids to teach some storywriting techniques and I mourn that picture books are not more often with older students. The illustrations are clever and unique. Yes, in one scene the wolves have red jam on their mouths that could be blood but the text makes it very clear this is all in fun and the red stuff is JAM! This is a fun book and not to be taken seriously.
Inventive, Witty, Exciting, Perfect for ALL Ages........2006-09-10
Lucy believes that there are wolves in her house's walls. She tells her mother, and she says it must be mice. She informs her father of her worry, and he says it must be rats. She goes to her brother, and he says it is bats. Still, Lucy is not assured. ''When the wolves come out of the walls", they tell her ''it will all be over''.
Of course, the wolves DO come out of the walls, and the family is forced to move outside. Any imaginative child will get the humor of the story and will not be scared. The worst things the wolves do are play the tuba and spill jam on the floor. Dave McKean's scratchy illustrations are combined with real photographs to create a beautiful affect. Great fun for readers of all ages.

SOMETHING UPSTAIRS
The house is very, very old-built in 1789. In the kitchen there's a door that opens to a narrow flight of stairs that corkscrew up to a tiny bedroom. If you're curious, you may want to find this place and sleep there some night-even if you know that strange noises may awaken you. But that's not all. In the dark of night, you'll see a white glow, almost shiny, and two hands will rise from a dark stain on the floor...followed by two arms...a head...then a neck. The humanlike shape, radiating a soft, pale, pulsing light, will reach out to you...beckoning. DO NOT FOLLOW...or you may be trapped forever in the unknown horror of this haunted room!

Mind Boggling.......2007-09-20
Something Upstairs by Avi is a frightening, suspenseful, and heart-pounding story about a boy that moves from California to Providence, Rhode Island, changing his life forever.
Kenny spends most of his days at the Library, interested in finding more about his new house, which dates back to the 1800s. When Kenny asks the librarian which way to the history section, he takes a wrong turn and enters a room with a very pale man by the name of Pardon Willinghast sitting in his office chair. Kenny soon finds out that Pardon Willinghast is not just a historian, as they meet again in another place and time.
Meanwhile, at home sleeping one night, Kenny hears a noise coming from the room next door. He slowly creeps into the miniature room and peers inside. Kenny sees a ghost-like figure rise from the blood stain on the floor. The ghost needs Kenny's help to set him free. The quest to help save the ghost from being murdered one night, by going back in time to the 1800s, is just one of Kenny's problems. Kenny also doesn't know that the enemy is closer than he thinks.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I think it was very good and a lot of people will like it. I think the book made your mind boggle and made you wonder what's going to happen next.

Avi's writing made me feel like I was Kenny, in a time not my own trying to help some ghost that just appears in my room one night. This book just sucks you in and you will find yourself turning page by page to find out what happens next!

I enjoyed the book very much. It was a very detailed and clear page turner, and every chapter left you wanting to read more. It is one of my favorite books, and I will definitely recommend this book to anyone.

Moving to a nice peaceful house, maybe not. Kenny was a 13 year old boy who had just moved from a big city to a small historical town. When Kenny was exploring his room he saw two small rooms. In one of the rooms there was a stain on the floor and what kenny didn't know was at night a ghost (Caylob) comes out of the stain and haunts the the small room. That very night Kenny heard a noise in one of the rooms Kenny checked the bigger room... nothing then he checked the small room, to his surprise there was a boy about the same age crawling out of the glowing stain it was Caylob. As Caylob look's for a way out of the room Kenny talks about finding Caylob's killer and Caylob wants Kenny to help. Will Kenny regret ever trying to help Caylob or will Kenny succeed on his journey? The theme of Something Upstairs is ghost, horror or adventure. The author of my book is Avi, Avi may have written this book to tell about when he moved into a a big haunted house and there was a ghost upstairs. Many people claim they have seen the ghost! "Thes's something Upstairs." This quote is significant because it starts out the hole book and say's the title. I recommend this book to someone who likes adventure and ghost stories and maybe someone who likes to learn about black history and slaves. Something Upstairs is a great book!
Something Upstairs.......2007-02-28
I think that this was a good book although there was some scenes that I didn't get and wern't very exciting either but I did like the parts that had a choice to make or a part where something happened to a character. One of the choices was kill a friend or become a ghost and I really liked those of course you could always guess what would happen but it is how they turn out like it is always solved but in a complex way and so I enjoyed this book.
Something Upstairs.......2007-02-22
The book I read was a fiction book written by AVI that is called Something Upstairs. The book is about a boy named Kenny that just moved to Providence, Rhode Island. His room is in the attic and in the attic is two small rooms where the slaves must have slept in, and in one of the rooms was a blood stain on the floor. Once he moved to his new house he would go to the library to find information about it. When he was looking for information he had to have permission so he asked Mr. Willinghast. At night in the small room a ghost would come out of the blood stain and Kenny asked his name and the ghost said Caleb, Caleb was a slave. Caleb told Kenny that he was murdered and Kenny asked if he could help and Caleb replied by saying help me find me murderer. Kenny room was like a portal to the past and one night Kenny took Caleb to through the portal. Before this Kenny had already gone to the past without Caleb. While both of them were there Kenny spotted Willinghast and Willinghast told Kenny all about Caleb and how every time somebody moved into that house they met Caleb and how they all tried to help him. Willinghast told them that the only way that they could leave was to kill Caleb so Willinghast told Kenny that he had to kill Caleb.
