Book Description

This beautiful book focuses on Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. Beginning in 1902, Tiffany (1848–1933) designed every aspect of the immense home, which had eighty-four rooms and eight levels, and extensive grounds into which the house was carefully integrated. Tiffany’s residential masterpiece was also a quasi-museum, for he filled it with his own works—windows, glassware, pottery, enamels, lamps, oil paintings, and watercolors—as well as with objects from his collections of Islamic, Asian, and Native American art.
Laurelton Hall burned down in 1957, but about ten years earlier most of its contents had been removed and sold. Every aspect of the estate is examined and re-created in this volume: its terraced gardens with fountains and pools; the many outbuildings; and Tiffany’s life there. The interior decoration of Laurelton Hall, a particular focus of the book, is represented by both numerous period photographs and newly commissioned color photography of surviving artworks and salvaged architectural components from the estate. For all who admire Tiffany and his work, this book presents a unique portrait of his remarkable home.

This is an excellent and scholarly book filled with incredible photos and descriptions of LCT's home, Laurelton Hall. The author has written a series of fine chapters that look at all aspects of this magnificent residence. What the fire at Laurelton destroyed, this book restores with words and photos. For all of you who love Tiffany's artistry, this book is not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars It is very basic, but easy to understand.......2007-08-06

I got the information that I needed to get started on stain glass creation, it is a very basic book. It is easy to understand and has step by step instructions for both copper foil and lead techniques and supply lists for both!

5 out of 5 stars Basic Stained Glass Making.......2007-07-07

This is an excellent tutorial book. A very good option for the beginners that need "how to" in making stained glass projects. Excellent pictures by Alan Wycheck.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have For Stained Glass Beginners.......2007-06-19

This book comes ring bound with a sturdy cover which makes it easy to keep open while working or just reading easily. It is very detailed and has great pictures showing each step. It explains very well from enviroment, tools, glass, techniques and a few example projects. It is overall a high quality book and is extremely organized and informative. A must have for anyone wanting to get off to a good start in stained glass.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book that will teach me how to make stained glass!!.......2007-05-21

I have bought at least 10 books on how to do Stained Galss. Sure wish I had bought this one first!! It is by far the very best how-to book I have found for this subject. It is well written and the photographs are clear and well done. It has this awesome binding that covers the spiral binding. I for one think All craft books should be bound this way. It lies flat on the table with out you having to find a stand to put it in so you can have it open while you work. It takes you step by step through the projects with lots of photographs to help you along. Being a visual learner this is perfect for me. There is also another book by the same author called Beyond Basic Stained Glass Making and I'm on my way to buy that book also, as soon as I finish writting thie review. The only problem with this, and many others, is that it doesn't tell you how to resize a pattern. But if you have a Kinko's or Office Max near you this is not a problem. They can enlarge your patterns for you. For me I have to find a differant solution because I don't have anything like that near me. I did find a program that will do it for you and will tile the pages so you can tape them together, but haven't tried that out yet so I can't say how it works. Ok, now I'm done and I'm off to buy the second book for myself. I hope everyone has a Great Day!!

Book Description

Finely rendered line drawings, based on photographs of authentic Victorian and Edwardian era designs, depict lovely floral and foliate motifs, a remarkable array of geometrics, transitional designs showing Art Nouveau influence, and much more
— all in a wide range of sizes and shapes.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Jeff's review.......2007-04-03

The cover gives 14 color examples. The 78 pages are packed with
an average of 8 black and white outlines to a page.
This is a lot of ideas but would be challenging to enlarge for
pattern making. A limited range of symetric styles are divided
into four groups.

4 out of 5 stars Design by eras/styles.......2007-01-10

This book is not my cup of tea, but it's great for someone who's looking for a design from a certain era. The book is broken down by the different eras or styles: Victorian Geometric, Art Nouveau, Victorian Floral, Edwardian, and 1920's. All the designs have a lot of horizontal and vertical lines in them. Also, it's all in black and white so you have to use your imagination to color it. The back of the front cover and back cover has examples in color.

5 out of 5 stars Stained Glass Designs from Dover.......2006-08-08

This is an excellent resource book for stained glass artisans. It has a variety of styles and eras in easy to duplicate drawings. Projects range from easy to intricate, designs (in some instances) can be mixed and matched.

Dover has a good selection of stained glass books which provide wonderful references to many and varied types of stained glass design.

4 out of 5 stars Great book and great ideas.......2006-07-06

This book is great for traditional patterns, specially for the ones from Great Bretain. It shows different types of patterns depending on the period of influence, like Edwardian, Art Deco and others. I wished the patterns showed some color!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2007-08-01

The Paperblanks line is great. A couple of things about this one - the spine is exposed on the outside which is how it is supposed to be but you can't see that in the picture. Also, it doesn't really look like stained glass, it's painted with some type of raised paint. Still, I challenge you to find a journal more beautiful. I give it four stars not because of its own merits, but only because the pictures on Amazon aren't quite accurate. On its own I would definitely give it a five.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect...they are all...Perfect.......2007-06-14

First off, in response to L. Lindsey's original comment (the reason, above all, I chose to comment on this in the first place), is that this is also suitable for a male, such as myself. :) just thought I'd point that out. ;)

On to the product itself, well, as the title suggests, it's an amazing journal, should you choose to use it that way. For myself I use it as as an all-in-one memory keeper. A pensive, if you will indulge a little mysticism. I also ordered Varsity fountain pens to use while writing in this thing, and let me say, it's amazing. By the time I'm done writing, I have ink all over my fingers. >. < It makes me feel almost like an old-fashioned writer. The pages aren't thick, but they aren't thin enough to where the ink from my pen will bleed through the other side and garble whatever I was writing previously. I also use a straight razor to slit the paper on some pages where I want to keep Polaroid pictures of things seen, done, experienced, etc.

This baby works extremely well for me. Not to mention the cover, which is worth almost five stars in and of itself. I'm extremely pleased that I was able to find this, because I know already that it has become part of me, it represents a stage in life where I'm trying to figure things out, and it does marvelously at filling in where my permanent memory fails sometimes.

Happy hunting.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutelly gorgeous!.......2007-03-08

This journal was even more beautiful when I actually had it than when I was purchasing it. I highly recommend this product to any female.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully-Made Journal.......2007-01-28

Bought this as a gift so I didn't get to spend too much time with it, however I couldn't help notice how beautiful the cover was and the high quality of the pages and binding. The cover has an embossed design and the colors are wonderful. This makes a great gift, almost too beautiful to use! (Although one caveat for gift-giving; mine arrived with a 1-inch indentation in the cover, presumably from the shipping or packaging.)

one of the most thorough books i bought on the subject of staining interior concrete floors! a must-have!

4 out of 5 stars A book for contractors.......2007-03-10

A very good book - for its type. It covers, somewhat briefly, every aspect of what it takes to set up a concrete floor decorating business. What is missing is what one can only learn from experiment and experience. It addresses the actual process of floor coloring about as thoroughly as a basic oil painting book covers what it takes to paint like Vermeer (or name your favorite painter). You can take classes, offered by many around the country including, I believe, Bob Harris; you can start with the information here and some slabs and teach yourself the trade; you can work with someone else who already knows the trade; but I have yet to see a book on the market that will teach you "All You Need to Know".

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2006-09-12

You will get practical tips, helpful hints and step-by-step instruction for staining concrete floors including specialty methods for applying stains, such as using concrete dyes, sandblasting or creating faux finishes, the tools needed and where to get them, how to maintain concrete floors, and creating intriguing effects with torn paper, cheesecloth, fertilizer, sawdust or kitty litter. In addition, Bob Harris' Guide to Stained Concrete Interior Floors will show you concrete design options, how to estimate costs of different techniques, how to prepare samples, how to write a contract for floor staining, surface preparation, sealing floors and more.

1 out of 5 stars An overview from 100,000 feet.......2006-07-26

Full of general information and totally lacking in specifics, this overpriced book (100 pages, $50.00) is something for the contractor looking to sell clients on acid-stained concrete floors and their possibilities. Anyone looking for information about actually doing these floors will have to look elsewhere, probably by taking overpriced training from Mr. Harris' company.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative and helpful book.......2005-10-03

I cannot understand how the previous reviewer did not like this book.

It was very helpfull and loaded with tips and instruction.

Learn how to turn concrete slabs into works of art your customers will cherish, and in return, reward you with a lifetime of repeat business. This new book shows you concrete design options available today, how to estimate costs of different techniques and compare those costs to other floor covering options such as carpet, wood floors, tile, or marble. Find out how to sell your services, write a contract for floor staining, then keep notes and records so you can repeat your performance. Large color photos show how to correct problem floors, test your stain before beginning, apply dyes, grouts and sealers, and specialty techniques. Full of charts, helpful hints and step-by-step instructions.

Popular among designers and crafters, the circular symmetry of mandala designs also makes them fun to color. This eye-catching collection of "stained glass" illustrations invites coloring book fans to apply their hues to a variety of these intriguing patterns, complete with centerpieces of human faces, florals, mythical creatures, and abstract designs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nice but . . ........2007-09-30

These are nice designs. But like all Dover Coloring Books, the designs are printed back to back. So if you use markers to color, like I mostly do, they bleed through and ruin the back design. If you prefer to use pencils to color, then this is a nice book--as are many of the Dover series.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-01-10

i've truly enjoyed the mandalas stained glass coloring book. It's very calming and soothing which allows you to forget the stresses of everyday. the designs are awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent selection of designs.......2006-07-19

There is a good selection of designs, and the print is on both sides of the page. The mandala will come out in much more vibrant colors if you use fine tip markers and color on both sides. The look beautiful in my windows and my only problem is that they don't perforate the edges of the page, so tearing the finished product out of the book is sort of a pain.

2 out of 5 stars Mandalas Stained Glass Coloring Book.......2006-03-25

I found them kind of hard to color with pencils. The colors were not as vibrant as I had they would be. The designs, however were great.

5 out of 5 stars two uses: coloring book and "stained glass" window decor.......2006-03-12

My 6-year-old daughter and I both enjoy coloring these mandalas and hanging them in the windows.

4 out of 5 stars Something different.......2007-04-10

I enjoy using this book, it is well laid out with materials list for every project, it has easy to follow steps, very clear illustrations and lovely ideas.
Like most books there are some projects I don't particularly like - but other people may like them, even so these projects can lead to new ideas using different types of materials.

It also contains some challenging projects that in time - who knows I may take on

5 out of 5 stars What I was looking for.......2007-01-22

I am a novice in stained glass...I know the fundamentals of cutting, soldering, finishing, etc.. What this book provides is some really cool extensions and applications of the basic skills. There are awesome designs that will be great in any garden either as a gift or, if you are an artist looking to produce pieces, works that will sell themselves.

Brilliant Stained Glass Mosaics combines two popular crafts into one exciting new art form. While most traditional opaque mosaics can be attractive and fun, they lack the creativity and excitement provided by the addition of stained glass. Glass-on-glass mosaic projects come to life because they can be illuminated by candlelight, incandescent or natural light.

This book illustrates simple mosaic techniques that can be used to create stunning, sophisticated designs for both home and garden décor. There are 12 glass mosaic projects in all, including windows, vases, candleholders, picture frames, light fixtures and more!

1 out of 5 stars Good Designs but no color guides for clarity.......2006-06-27

The designs are very good. The problem I see with this book is there no finished designs or color guides. If you are new to stained glass it could be difficult to visualize a finished design. But all in all a good design book.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting designs but the title is misleading.......2003-09-15

I found some very interesting nature patterns in this book, but almost a fifth of the book contained designs (at least 12) which I found unrecognizable as anything belonging to nature or anything else. If you are into these abstract designs, then this is an added bonus. I was disappointed and would rather have had traditional nature designs as pictured on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Reference Text on Stained Glass from a Renowned Expert.......2007-05-23

This text provides an outstanding and comprehensive historical review of stained glass from the Romanesque to the present era. Translated from the original French, the text is clear, well composed, and full of important information regarding all aspects of stained glass production, its use as an art form, and the changes undergone in the media over a thousand year period. The author, Catherine Brisac, is the curator of the Musée des Plans et Reliefs de Paris, and is a renowned authority on the subject.

The book contains numerous high-quality oversized (12" by 10") glossy reproductions of a wide variety of stained glass from Europe. This book can serve well as a coffee table volume for perusing, or as a library edition for reference. Of special note are the numerous close-up photos of the glass which depict specific scenes in the larger glass panels. But the ultimate value in the book lays in the author's comprehensive knowledge of the subject and her textual delivery of that content, which delineates the historical progression of the art form across both time and geographical regions. The text is detailed and specific, and is obviously the keynote of the book. The photographic representations are used to beautifully illustrate the text, not the other way around.

The book also contains some interesting and useful documentary material, including some selected textual copies from medieval craftsmen describing techniques in use at the time and depicting how craftsmen viewed their work in terms of its importance and utility. A listing of stained grass collections around the world (including location, museum name, and a brief description of the collections at each), makes a valuable addition for anyone wishing to enjoy these works in person. A chapter entitled "The Techniques of Stained Glass" leads the reader through a diagrammatically illustrated series of steps in the glass making process, and even shows how one may produce stained glass as a craft or hobby undertaking. Finally, a small but helpful glossary contains some key words the author uses in the text. A marvelous addition to any medievalist's library, or to anyone interested in this wondrous art form.
