Book Description
Even though one fourth of total flight time must be flown at night, for most Tactical Naval Aviators when the sun goes down its time to shed their speed slacks, splash on a little cologne and head for the O'Club bar. Undoubtedly, there would be a bevy of beauties adorning the barstools this Friday evening at the Jack Black Memorial Officer's Club. After all, it was the day before a huge Drill Weekend for the air station with Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Air Guard units all scheduled to be in town for their last drill of 1991. Indeed, the Jackson's ($20 bills) would be flying across the bar tonight. Without question many of the single, and not so single, women in Southeastern Louisiana were aware of this fact and would be out in search of a pilot for a little rest and relaxation before the hectic pace of the holiday season took its annual toll. It wasn't close to the spectacle that occurs each Wednesday evening at the Officer's Club at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego. It couldn't even compare to Thursday nights at the Spin Drifter Tavern in Jacksonville. But for Belle Chasse, Louisiana, it was the only game in town on a Drill Weekend.

The River Rattlers Cowboy Up.......2007-07-23
It's time for the River Rattlers to cowboy up. Pistols? Nope, try high-bypass fan blades, the kind that revved the work horse turbine engine of the Navy's A-7 Corsair jets. Like the bucking broncos they fly, the rough-riding pilots of this elite attack squadron (VA-204) are hard-training, hard-playing and tender loving Kerosene Cowboys. A cowboy's Stetson? Nope, picture instead the flight helmets of those Kerosene Cowboys lassoed to face masks with 100% pure oxygen flowing freely. Daring to fly high in the 8-G's arena of endurance, first-time author Randy Arrington ropes the reader in with strong characterizations that mimic his pilots' call signs (much like Toby Keith's "Big Dog Daddy"), well-developed plot intricacies and settings perfectly described as only locals can. Written by one who has survived the high-risk adventures of keeping Americans safe from harm, Top Gun Arrington's soaring literary success will undoubtedly land him a fly-by on the big screen. Grab this page-turner and soar through the highly entertaining can't-put-it-down "faction" novel today. (I'm on my third reading and still can't put it down!)
High-Quality Entertainment in this Novel.......2007-05-16
SLUFS, fliers and nostalgia combine to make a great read in Randy Arrington's foray into capturing the lives and lifestyles of the members of the VA-204 "River Rattlers" - quasi-fictional reservists called up in the early 1990s, for story's sake, to represent the A-7 community during the Corsair's final cruise. Arrington calls on his experience as a tactical aviator from the start, infusing personalities and quirks into the Rattler ready room to develop a cross section of characters running the spectrum from choir boys (very few) to stereotypical jet jocks (quite a few) that typically inhabit a squadron while offering a detailed image of life in a reserve unit. Stress and concerns associated with the activation are mitigated by the excitement of getting back on the ship and heading to far-off locales. Details of the workup period draw the reader into the world of tactical Navy flying, the depth of preparation for missions and the rewards of these efforts in a job well done. Arrington's portrayal of the lifestyle of early 90s aviators will bring smiles of knowing appreciation to the indoctrinated, and envy to all others. Extended All Officers Meetings (and this in the days before PowerPoint), trips to watering holes across the country familiar to all, terrifically engineered pranks (one reflected a certain XO's asbestos "scare" on the Connie a few years back), golf games with dignitaries and volumes of (rather non-P.C.) banter between comrades take the reader right back to that life of minor stress and terrific excitement. The tale follows Brad "Teen Angel" Ackerman - who supplements his day job as a Hollywood stunt pilot with monthly trips to New Orleans to stay sharp in the cockpit, pursue local belles and maintain ties to the life he left behind for the civilian world - through the first stage of workups. Married members of the squadron do their best to deal with the surprise of this good deal and the pressure placed on families that never saw it coming. All work together to build cohesion in order to prove the viability and efficacy of a reserve squadron already viewed derisively by a skeptical Air Group Commander. Kerosene Cowboys brings all of the fun and misery of preparing for cruise right back to the fore. Any flier - Navy or otherwise - will enjoy reading their way back into planning, briefing, flying and debriefing the rides required to gain certification for sea. Arrington never strays far from total immersion, and keeps the social aspect of Naval Aviation in sharp, entertaining focus. His book is a fun, intriguing tale for aviators, aspirants, fans and general readers whose biggest concern will be trying to figure out how long it will be before they can finally put to sea with the Rattlers in Arrington's next Kerosene Cowboys novel.

Thuro's Victorian Lighting .......2007-07-30
This is the third book by Catherine Thuro on the subject of kerosene oil lighting and lamps. This book is as informative and useful as were her other two books. As an avid collector of whale oil and Kerosene oil antique lamps and lighting, I feel her books are one of the best reference sources available. I highly recommend this book to anyone who embraces the passion of collecting antique lighting!

A great study of Oil Lamps and will be looking forward to other publications and updates from Catherine Thuro. A wonderful display of illustrations and photos.
Oil Lamps: The Kerosene Era in North America by Catherine Thuro.......2006-07-25
This is an updated printing of the original book. I have the older one and it was nice to review the new updated information. This is a great book for any oil lamp collector, and it has a very reasonable discounted price. Betty Lonsdale, Florida
Excellent History and Details.......2005-07-10
One book can't possibly cover every manufacturer, even the big names. However Thuro has provided history, research and extraordinary detail to offer well over 300 pages of pictures, descriptions, old advertising and assorted information that educates the individual on oil and kerosene lamps from North America.
Of particular interest the author delves into specific new patents such as adding handles or modest change in designs to demonstrate how improvements were made over the years. Thuro covers railroad lighting, ships lamps, whale oil lamps and provides an excellent chronological history of lighting as it progessed through the years.
In addition to dozens of color and black/white photographs, the author provides drawings and old advertisements to give the reader detailed information on dates and lamp design. Values are updated to 2004 but with the changing markets these become fluid rapidly. For education, collecting and identification this book will serve most collectors and dealers well.
Oil Lamps: The Kerosene Era in North America.......2004-07-09
This book was a big disappointment. I have several Bradley & Hubbard kerosene lamps, and there is not one word about them in this book. Bradley & Hubbard were one of the largest manufacturers of kerosene lamps during the 19th century, and are very popular with collectors today. The Smithsonian has a collection, with a curator and a web site, of B & H lamps and other items made by them. Strangely, there is one brief mention (with a photo) of a Rayo lamp, and the author fails to mention Rayo lamps were made by Bradley & Hubbard for the Standard Oil Co. I was considering buying Oil Lamps II by the same author, but I'm afraid it would be a disappointment also.
If you only own one book on oil lamps, this should be it!.......2001-06-01
Oil Lamps I has become the standard reference book on kerosene lamps. It is by far the most comprehensive and definitive book to cover the kerosene era. More than 1,000 kerosene lamps and accessories are shown in over 900 studio photographs. For the historian, student and collector, there awaits a carefully researched and organized visual record. First published in 1979, this newly released 1998 reprint is complete with an updated price guide. Often the first reference I choose.
Book Description
The Smell of Kerosene tells the dramatic story of a NASA research pilot who logged over 11,000 flight hours in more than 125 types of aircraft. Donald Mallick gives the reader fascinating first- hand descriptions of his early naval flight training, carrier operations, and his research flying career with NASA and its predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).
Mallick joined the NACA as a research pilot at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory at Hampton, Virginia, where he flew modified helicopters and jets, and witnessed the NACA's evolution into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
After transferring to the NASA Flight Research Center (now NASA Dryden Flight Research Center) at Edwards, California, he became involved with projects that further pushed the boundaries of aerospace technology. These included the giant delta-winged XB-70 supersonic research airplane, the wingless M2-F1 lifting body vehicle, and the triple-sonic YF-12 Blackbird. Mallick also test flew the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV) and helped develop techniques used in training astronauts to land on the Moon.
This book puts the reader in the pilot's seat for a "day at the office" unlike any other.
Donald L. Mallick joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics as a research pilot in 1957. He retired in 1987 as Deputy Chief of the Aircraft Operations Division at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. During his distinguished career, Mallick logged over 11,000 flight hours in more than 125 different types of aircraft. He is a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.
Peter W. Merlin has worked as an archivist in the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center History Office since June 1997. He has published Mach 3+: NASA/USAF YF-12 Flight Research, 1969-1979 (NASA SP-2001-4525) as well as many articles on aerospace history.

Disappointed.......2005-06-12
I was disappointed in the book. I expected it to be an exciting documentation of the things that go right and things that go wrong during flight testing, along with detailed "ride in the right seat" descriptions of how he came through the tense moments. Instead it seemed like it was mostly a litany of people he worked with and the designations of plane that they had experience flying. Even the tense moments that were documented failed to evoke emotion in me. They were mostly fairly sterile descriptions of what happened - which is certainly best for the scientific test flight reports, but adds nothing to the desire of the reader to "be there." It is probably this trait that made Mr. Mallick an exceptional test pilot, but, unfortunately, not an exciting author.

Only one week after purchasing this book I spotted an Oil Lamp in an antique shop in Bournemouth, England and I bought it at a bargain price knowing from reading this book that it was a 1904 German "Bismark" Lamp!

One of My Favorites.......2007-04-24
This is one of my favorite books. Chris Wooding definetley has some talent. He describes the characters in great detail. You become so drawn to the main character Cal, who feels left out and anti-social, you'll even start feeling the same emotions as him. Once you pick it up, it'll be hard to put back down, that's how great it is.
MORGAN"S REVIEW.......2006-05-18
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! It was one of the best ones i ever read. the way the author displays how the boy is being over come by the need to burn things and how it causees him to actually decide to burn himself by sitting inthe middle of the gym, pure genius. this book had my on edge for hours, i couldnt put it down. If you are a pyro you really have to read this book, even if you arent a pyro you should read it.
Great Read!.......2006-05-05
This was a fantastic book, I recommend for people ages 13+. This book deals with many of the things goin on in schools today. Being that I am not a very social being, I can relate to Cal. His shyness is a bit severe in comparison to mine, but none the less, I can relate to him. An amazing book that was very realistic, and am very glad to have picked this up. I would advise YOU to do so too.
Martin's Review About "Kerosene" The Book .......2005-05-27
This is for 14 and up. The is about a kid upsest woth five. Cal has a good friend named Joel. At first he does'nt trust anyone but later on the book he starts trusting more. So basically its about is all about how to gain trust and not to give it out ramdomly. But later on the book Cal burns down the school. This explain how to give trust and how it works. In the book Cal (the main character) ends up giving Abby's his trust, so she earns Cal trust. I liked this book because it shows what teenagers go trough. It shows we are not the only ones who go trough "Thuis also shows how real friends are; in one of the themes Cal and Joel are being chased by some people and have to cross the trsin traks and Joel ends up saving Cal. When Cal was crossing he was looking sraight at the train. Like evrything all the memories went right pass him and Joel had to pull him away to save him. I do recomend this book to people because it get your attention.
Wont go into the depths of history but is still brilliant.........2004-06-24
Sure this book will not go into the depths of history, it might not even last twenty years but despite all of that it is an amazing read. It takes you into the mind of those anti-social people in our society (which I could relate to being anti-social myself). They are often labled freaks but that is unfair. It is a true picture of what we as humans often due to those anti-social people with low self esteem. We pick on them and make them do crazy things like Cal in Kerosene. Cal starts setting fires because he can find no other way out. Everyone has abused him and he feels alone and unworthy of living until Abby comes along. Abby is one of the first people to truely take an intrest into Cal and to tell him he is worth something. Of course Cal thinks that she is using him for various reasons, this also often happens in real life to those anti-social people. The book is pretty realistic. Sure setting fires everywhere might be a little extreme but besides that this is pretty much what anti-social people are like. If you want an amazing real-life read then read this book. Once you get past the drugs, alcohol and fire you will see a true portarit of what "anti-social" people are like and the true brutality of life.
Book Description
Some shows just get better with age. As The Andy Griffith Show turns forty, the authors of the complete fan guide to the show have updated the book with new information gained from access to the complete shooting scripts of the original episodes.
The Andy Griffith Show remains one of America's most-watched programs, gaining new fans through its widespread syndication (including a major promotional campaign accompanying its joining TV Land's prime-time line-up in 2000), conventions, and upcoming "behind-the-scenes" television specials. America has embraced the characters of Mayberry---Aunt Bee, Barney Fife, Goober, Opie, and Andy himself---as family members. From Miracle Salves to Kerosene Cucumbers, The Andy Griffith Show has left a lasting impression on our culture, a sweet nostalgic taste for a time gone by.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference for the Mayberry Trivia Buff & Fan Fiction Writer.......2005-07-17
Ken Beck and Jim Clark no doubt eat, drink, and breath the Andy Griffith Show as they must have watched every episode several times with pen and paper in hand to create this book filled with almost every bit of trivia you'd want to know about the show, not to mention their many other books on TAGS. This book is not about the actors, writers, behind-the-scenes activities, or the philosophy of the show, it is a book on the characters, places, and happenings in Mayberry. The episodes of the television show is the only source for this book.
Some reviewers do not think a book recapping the events of the television show is valuable, but it is for trivia buffs and for fan fiction writers. Fans who like to write Mayberry-related stories can find all sorts of helpful tidbits in this book. There is even an episode guide in the back with brief synopses. It is very useful for those who have not seen all the episodes or cannot remember certain details about the characters, places, etc. I have referred to this book several times in writing just one fan fiction story. It is very well-organized and usually offers that little detail I'm looking for. I was very surprised how much information is offered in this book.
Every character is profiled (almost all with photos) from the main ones to those who were only on a short time or intermittently like Ellie Walker, the Darlings, Clara Edwards Johnson, Emmett Clark, Sam Jones, and that adorable Warren Ferguson (with a nice photo I have not seen before). For trivia buffs, there are chapters on "Cops and Robbers," "Codes and Cases," "Mayberry Media" (local newspapers, radio stations, tv stations, tv programs enjoyed by Mayberry residents), "Music of Mayberry," "Contradictions," and more. There is also a helpful map of Mayberry with all the important spots like Myer's Lake, the Duck Pond, the Darling's cabin, and Ernest T. Bass' cave, a town directory and yellow pages for both Mayberry and Mt. Pilot. It also has a quiz. There are scores of b&w photos throughout the book. My only complaint is that the episode guide is not divided up into seasons. Recommended for anyone interested in the characters of TAGS.
the ultimate andy griffith show book.......2005-01-01
this is book is wonderful! it is by far the best andy griffith book that is out there.
Miracle Salve and Kerosene Cucumbers.......2003-05-21
Wonderful, just what I anticipated. Thank you for distributing this excellent review of the show, and list of all episodes.
A peek inside Mayberry's secret life.......2003-04-04
This is the second book I have read about The Andy Griffith Show. (The first one was Barney Fife and Other Characters I Have Known, written by Don Knotts with Robert Metz)
This book has very descriptive information about all the favorite characters from the show, based on what is known about them from the episodes of the show. There is NO information about the actors that played these roles, JUST the characters. These facts are put together in an easy-to-read style that will make for pleasant browsing or looking up trivia facts. There are also many nice photos in the book, some in color (fortieth anniversary edition) and there are quizzes, lists, and an episode guide with very brief summaries of the shows.
It is a really nice book and can be enjoyed by fans of the show in any age group, from youth to grownup.
And even though there is no actual show production stories or actor interviews in this book, it does do a good job of profiling the characters and showing their individual personalities in the context of the world they exist in, that of their beloved Mayberry.
Hallelujah, I have died and gone to Mayberry!.......2002-02-07
Everything you ever wanted to know about Mayberry, but didn't know whom to ask. Until now. Painstakingly assembled by two self-proclaimed "Goobers" who have likely forgotten more TAGS tidbits than you or I will ever know, this exhaustive guide is very well-organized and easy on the eye. The first time I read it, during a memorably relaxing trip to the north Georgia mountains, I devoured it in one luxurious sitting, and I still refer to it often. It's that entertaining, addictive and authoritative.
It's important to note, the authors present facts about Mayberry and its denizens as if they were real (and don't try to tell me they aren't!), leaving the task of analyzing the program itself to other scholars. (Such as Richard Michael Kelly, whose own TAGS book is top-shelf.)
The rampant commercialization of all things Mayberry in recent years is more than a little disconcerting. The loving care that went into the making of this book, however, is not in question. For my money, it is the only indispensable reference for those with Mayberry in their blood.
