Surely among the most lovable of all Dr. Seuss creations, Horton the Elephant represents kindness, trustworthiness, and perseverance--all wrapped up, thank goodness, in a comical and even absurd package. Horton hears a cry for help from a speck of dust, and spends much of the book trying to protect the infinitesimal creatures who live on it from the derision and trickery of other animals, who think their elephant friend has gone quite nutty. But worse is in store: an eagle carries away the clover in which Horton has placed the life-bearing speck, and "let that small clover drop somewhere inside / of a great patch of clovers a hundred miles wide!" Horton wins in the end, after persuading the "Who's" to make as much noise as possible and prove their existence. This classic is not only fun, but a great way to introduce thoughtful children to essentially philosophical questions. How, after all, are we so sure there aren't invisible civilizations floating by on every mote? (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr

I love the way Seuss takes the daily problems puts them to poetry and sends them on their way. It is great

5 out of 5 stars I love Horton!.......2007-06-28

This is a great book - one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books! Besides the fabulous rhymes and rhythm, the story is a great one about loyalty. Great for kids or adults of any age!

5 out of 5 stars We all need this one!.......2007-06-14

More than ever, our culture needs the wisdom of Dr. Seuss. Every child and adult needs to read this story. Perhaps when politicians and journalists are so casual about killing human embryos for spare parts, we'll remember that "a person's a person, no matter how small."

5 out of 5 stars All Life Has Significance.......2007-04-11

Horton, you did it again. This is a wonderful book that illustrates how even the smallest (Who) can make a difference for his whole world and all the lives in it. It gives children and parents alike the encouragement they need to stand up and make a difference even if they are small and considered not to exist. Every voice counts in Who-ville.
As a grandmother, our kids loved the story, recognized the values and were able to verbalize them.
Dr. Seuss so artistically demonstrated how it takes ears to hear, and if those ears are dull then the whole world of little-ones need to call out together - "YOPP!" Please YOPP the distruction of life. May we all have ears to hear the voices of those who need our protection.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC.......2007-04-07

THE ONLY THING THAT I CAN SAY IS THAT YOU CAN'T BEAT THE PRICES ON THESE BOOKS FROM AMAZON. THEY WERE MY FAVORITES AS A KID AND NOW I GET TO ENJOY THEM ALL OVER AGAIN WITH MY OWN CHILDREN.

Take the heat and sizzle from an episode of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, mix it in with the mystery from MURDER, SHE WROTE, then stir it together with a dash of the exotic from SIX FEET UNDER and what you have is Jill Shalvis's romantic-mystery-comedy, GET A CLUE. The current installment in the "Wicked" Women Whodunit series, this book is sure to make you laugh, pant, and cheer-all at the same time.

Breanne Mooreland is having a really bad day. Left standing at the altar, she decides there's only one way to get over the embarrassment of being jilted-go on her honeymoon and rack up as many expensive charges as she can on Dean "the lying rat monkey's" credit card. But the day that started out bad is about to get a lot worse, when she's forced to endure the airplane flight from hell, loses her luggage somewhere over Timbuktu, and arrives at the mountain lodge only to be snowed in by the mother of all blizzards. Then, finally entering her expensive and all-ready-paid- for-by-Dean-and-filled-with-erotic-gift-baskets honeymoon suite, she finds a naked man standing in the shower. Her shower. A man who, for all intents and purposes, has absolutely no intention of vacating the suite-with or without Breanne's permission, and whether or not she decides to stay in the suite with him.

Now the phone is dead, the electricity is out, there's only the one house for the two of them, and there's a dead body in the attic. There's also a man who looks like a member of a motorcycle gang claiming to be the butler, a missing manager, a sexy maid, and a handful of other nefarious characters running around the house-and no one seems to know what to do or how to do it.

Now naked guy, aka San Francisco Detective Cooper Scott, is feeling desperate. Not only is he unbelievably attracted to Breanne, his houseguest, but now there's a dead body to attend to, a missing manager to find, and suspects to question. Breanne's honeymoon-all ready minus the groom-isn't shaping up to be much of a vacation, and Cooper's determined to keep her safe. And it doesn't have anything to do with the pink vibrator in their suite-really.

Jill Shalvis has penned another winner, an exciting mix of action-adventure, police procedural, wickedly funny whodunit, and steamy romance. You can't go wrong picking up a copy of GET A CLUE-but don't blame me if you're disappointed when the story is over.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-16

I was so looking forward to this book but it did not meet my expectations, I was even speed reading over the "racy" scenes. I am currently on page 281 and struggling to finish it.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, this was good! .......2006-09-16

Nothing like a honeymoon without a groom! But, having been left at the altar, Breanne decides to go on her honeymoon by herself. Hey, it's paid for. Unfortunately, she has a terrible flight and her luggage is lost. Then she ends up snowed in, at a mountain lodge, with no power and a burnt-out cop who says he gets the only available room, the honeymoon suite, because he was there first! Things go from bad to worse when Breanne stumbles over a dead body who seems to be one of the wacky staff!

This book was so funny! I didn't see the end coming at all. It was very unique. Breanne's journal entries were so great I copied a lot of them for future reference. EX: "My life would be much more amusing if it was only happening to someone else." My only question is, if there was no power how were they constantly taking hot showers? Even if they were gas hot water heaters you have to have power to pump the water. Same thing with the toilets, you have to have power to pump the water.

But, I guess that's why they call it fiction!

1 out of 5 stars Save your money and buy a good book!.......2006-06-13

I thought I was getting a read in the Mary Kay Andrews fashion! This book is horrible! He calls her Princess and she keeps accidently running into his hunky body. That's pretty much it Folks. What a waste of money....I got through about one third of it and sent it to the trash. One star is tooo many.

5 out of 5 stars A FUN Read!.......2006-01-01

Breanne Mooreland has been dumped at the alter and since the scum sucking groom has already paid for the honeymoon, Breanne decides to go to get away from the embarrassment the whole situation has caused. When she arrives at the mountain resort home in the middle of a blizzard, she's introduced to a naked showering guy who's already staked a claim to the honeymoon suite. Cooper Scott needed to get away for awhile and what better place than a secluded mountain?

Not long after their arrival, a dead body is found. Now Bree and Cooper are in a house surrounded by 4 other people -- and one of them must be the murderer!

This story had me laughing almost constantly, but in true JS form, a scene here and there would make me have that 'emotional tug' that just made me sigh. Cooper and Bree are like oil and water -- at least at first -- and watching them dance around each other was fun. I was rooting for all the couples in the house and the closer I came to the ending, the more I didn't want there to be a resolution! But -- I loved it! I'm putting it on my 'this is what I aspire to' shelf, because really, I just love the way JS writes!

Magenta has to get glasses, and she's very nervous! Will the eye doctor's office be scary? What will the eye exam be like? Come along and find out!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Book without name calling.......2007-05-10

Finally, a book without the negative name-calling i have seen in multiple other books! It just states that Magenta see's blurry, goes for an exam and tells of how she discovers all of the things she couldnt see before like the bird in the tree. It also emphasizes that she can pick out her own pair of frames for her glasses making her seem "cool." I highly recommend it for the preschooler-Kindergartner who is going to get glasses or just did. My 4 year old liked it and his teacher read it to the class.

5 out of 5 stars "I Was Scared They Were The Only Pair".......2006-11-11

"But now I have lots of friends who see like me / My glasses are so cool!"

That's from the television episode. It's not in this book, but that doesn't stop this book from being an excellent adaptation of the television story.

In this book, the readers follow from Magenta's perspective as she goes to get glasses. We get to "hear" Magenta's thoughts basically, as she worries the glasses will be too heavy and then later realizes how much the glasses are helping her. Magenta wanted to see a butterfly and with her new glasses, she finally can.

Anyone who's ever needed to get glasses will be able to identify with what happens in this story.

5 out of 5 stars So sweet and so helpful!.......2005-09-29

In this book, Magenta gets glasses. This involves a trip to the eye doctor. Of course, Steve and Blue go along for moral support. Magenta gets to tell the doctor which items are bigger, more in focus, and so on. Then she gets to pick out her own frames (purple of course!) and have the glasses fitted.

This book parallels the Blue's Clues TV episode of the same name. In the TV episode, Sherry Stringer (of ER fame - Susan) does the voice for the eye doctor.

Both the episode and the book adequately prepare a child for the experience of getting glasses. My two year old was so excited about this book (she hadn't seen the episode, although she will, via Tivo). It's precious and helpful in a stressful situation. My daughter picked out purple frames, in order to be like Magenta.

Silent Hunter set the bar by which all other submarine sims are measured. You command a WW2 US navy sub in the south Pacific, chasing freighters, oilers, transports, warships, and conducting espionage and raids on port cities. The manual that comes with the game is fantastic, so there's nothing really much left to tell in this game guide other than how to beat the missions and how to use the thermal layers to hide from the destroyers. As a guide, its a good reference but you'll still need the manual.

Book Description

Minerva Clark is a typical thirteen-year-old girl: she hates her hair, she hates her legs (which somehow manage to look both too fat and too skinny at the same time), and don’t get her started on her gigantor bootie. On top of all this puberty, she’s being raised by three older brothers, none of whom really get her. But when a fateful encounter with a lightning storm rewires her sense of self, Minerva Clark becomes anything but a typical teen. With a brazen new attitude and a nose for trouble, Minerva soon finds herself drawn inexplicably to the scene of a murder and determined to track down the killer. If only all the clues weren’t pointing so close to someone she knows…

5 out of 5 stars A fun-filled novel that combines sibling relationships and teen self-consciousess with mystery and adventure.......2005-11-02

Minerva Clark, formerly a typical 13-year-old girl, has a jolting experience that changes her forever. She transforms from a highly self-conscious girl to one who is almost "unself-conscious."

We meet Minerva on the worst day of her life. First, her older brother Quills, a 22-year-old musician/Kinko's employee/college student, drags her to the mall arcade, Tilt, to hang out with his creepy friend and band mate, Toc. Even though Minerva would rather stay at home and play with her pet ferret, Jupiter, and write rebuses in her notebook, she is afraid of what would happen if people found out what she really thought. She thinks: "Anyway, if word got out that I secretly thought Tilt was stupid and boring, then people would say Double Freak Show Loser doesn't even begin to describe Minerva Clark, because how could I be bulimic and still have fat legs?"

Minerva's friend Reggie joins them at Tilt and talks Minerva into playing Dance Dance Revolution. Bad idea. Minerva winds up embarrassing herself in front of the mean girls from school, Julia and the two Chelseas. She flees the mall and ends up getting a ride home with her favorite cousin, Jordan Parrish. Jordan is both a Rose Festival Princess and a soon-to-be recipient of the Hightower Scholarship that is awarded to "a Fine Young Woman who got straight A's and excelled in a sport." So Minerva knows something fishy is going on when Jordan gets pulled over by the cops, and then arrested.

Minerva is forced to call her youngest brother Morgan --- a 20-year-old philosophy student, "Junk Food Vegetarian" and Buddhist --- for a ride home after her cousin is hauled off to the police station. Morgan takes Minerva home and we meet the third (and oldest) Clark brother, Mark, who is often the BIC (Brother in Charge). Minerva's father is away on business and her mother had moved to the other side of the country after the divorce. So when nerdy Mark Clark asks Minerva, who is already in trouble for running off at Tilt, to help him with a project, she has no choice but to say yes. Little does Minerva know that this project will change her forever.

Mark Clark makes fractals --- computer-generated images created from brainwaves --- and that night, Minerva is his guinea pig. So on the worst day of Minerva Clark's life, she has an accident. She gets electrocuted. And this is just the beginning! Minerva takes it upon herself to solve two crimes: a murder involving the town bookstore clerk and the unjust arrest of her cousin Jordan. Minerva's electrocution zaps her with a new personality and a double dose of self-confidence that makes her an excellent detective.

Although its premise is somewhat unbelievable, what make this book spark are its wonderful characters. The voice of Minerva is humorous, engaging and entertaining. The supporting characters of the Clark brothers, Jordan Parrish and Reggie are also lively, unique and truly colorful. MINERVA CLARK GETS A CLUE, Karen Karbo's first book for young readers, is a fun-filled novel that combines sibling relationships and teenage self-consciousness with mystery and adventure.

4 out of 5 stars "The worst day of my life began at the video arcade.".......2005-10-08

Crime lurks beneath the surface of this modern day teen-aged heroine's novel. A Nancy Drew of the new millennium, thirteen-year old Minerva Clark is a "self-conscious, self-loathing, freak show freak", forever under the supervision of whatever BIC (Brother-In-Charge) is left to watch the younger sister. Dressed in her favorite too big khaki pants and hooded Van's sweatshirt, the unsuspecting Minerva visits a local bookstore, Under the Covers, with her cousin, Jordan. On the way home, Jordan is arrested and Minerva has no idea what is going on. Not much later, lending herself as part of a science project, Minerva is all wired up, when, out of nowhere, lightening strikes and she is electrocuted. Strangely enough, this shock turns Minerva's life around, her shy self-awareness a thing of the past. Infused with confidence, the new Minerva is fearless, no longer a shadow of her three older brothers who serve as surrogates since their parents' divorce.

Minerva wastes no time sleuthing the cause of Jordan's arrest, diving into a mystery that involves identity theft, a complicated money scam and a death. This empowered seventh-grader throws aside the usual teen angst and chronic self-evaluation, tapping into her inner Superwoman. The worst day of her life becomes a catalyst for change that is more than surface, the quirky teen taking some hard knocks but coming back with a healthy attitude. Speaking in the easy jargon of today's young teens, laced with cyber-speak, Minerva is an innovative and interesting character, her usual wise-cracking apropos and reflective of the electronic age. Teen-aged girls can readily identify with this spunky teen as she steps up to be counted, peer pressure and self doubts a thing of the past. Move over, Nancy Drew. There's a new girl in town. Luan Gaines/ 2005.

5 out of 5 stars She is Just Like me!.......2005-09-27

When I read Minerva Clark Gets A Clue I just couldnt believe it, she was just like me before her accident!!!! I love a book I can relate to and this one is definitly a good book for girls! Minerva is witty and hilarious. She also likes alot of cool things like rebuses. She's just plain cool in general.

5 out of 5 stars Self-Conscious Girl Turned Detective.......2005-09-21

Thirteen-year-old Minerva Clark is dissatisfied with everything about her life. Her hair is a huge frizzball, her legs are too fat and too skinny at the same exact time, and her [...] is huge. As if all that weren't bad enough, her two childhood friends - Hannah and Julia - have turned into the gruesome twosome overnight; and she's forced to live under the supervision of three deranged brothers, while her father, Charlie, gallivants all over the world as a high-profile lawyer. But Minerva's entire life gets flipped upside down the night she's electrocuted. Suddenly, Minerva thinks that she's perfect in every way, and is no longer self-conscious about...anything. Which is why she's now spending the time she used to waste evaluating her looks, solving a mystery. One that involves her favorite cousin, Jordan, the death of a bookstore worker, and an identity theft ring.

When I saw the cover of MINERVA CLARK GETS A CLUE, I knew that it was perfect for me seeing as how: a) I wear Converse hightops in various different colors ALL the time, and b) I love ferrets, and all other animals. As if that weren't cause for the purchase alone, I adore mysteries, and thought that this one was right up my alley. I was right. Karen Karbo has created a marvelous amateur-sleuth, who-done-it, starring a self-conscious-girl-turned-detective, and her shiny-object-loving ferret, Jupiter. Minerva could very well be the younger sister of Meg Cabot's Mia Thermopolis character (of THE PRINCESS DIARIES), what with the many criticisms of her body and hair - at least at the beginning of the story. The many fun characters readers meet throughout the story, will keep everyone turning the pages until they finally discover who the culprit is, and fans - myself included -will find themselves hungrily awaiting the next installment in Minerva's life. A must-read!

5 out of 5 stars Get A Clue! This is Awesome!.......2005-09-01

"Get a Clue" is really enjoyable and something that Lizzie McGuire fans would definitely love. In this book, sticky notes are left everywhere to lots of people, saying things like, "I know what you did last week..." and many more. And guess what---Lizzie's name is signed on each one but she didn't write them! So who could've written them? Lizzie McGuire is definitely on the case! AWESOME book to read if you like Lizzie McGuire or not. Amazing!

    Lizzie's List of Suspects

? Kate Sanders, Queen of Mean: She's treated everyone like dirt ever since she was granted her cheerleader superpowers. (Ugh.)

? Carole Shelton, Classmate: She's taken an awfully suspicious interest in this dilemma. (Hmmmmm....)

? Ms. Young, Guidance counselor: She's acting really weird--spying on students and talking to herself! (Yikes!)

5 out of 5 stars So good it could be a "lost" episode........2004-06-23

Excellence! Everything one expects from a prose "Lizzie" story and more. The plot is solid. The dialogue is spot on. And the author obviously did research on the subject. The characters' mannerisms, their expressions, even the reference of previous events that happened on the television show; everything hits on all cylinders.

As we all learned in the episode entitled "Clue-Less", Lizzie (and Gordo) has a knack for solving mysteries, owing to her being a huge fan of Nancy Drew. Well, in this, the first of a series, Lizzie puts those crime-sleuthing skills to the ultimate test.

Blackmail notes are breaking out all over school, and they are all seemingly signed by the same person-Lizzie McGuire! As though getting through Junior High wasn't tough enough, now she has the whole school thinking her a bad person. To salvage her reputation, and avoid punishment, she must crack the case wide open and find out who's out to frame her, in addition to getting her English project done on time!

This book is everything the episode novelizations should be. One can actually see the camera angles one would use were it on television. Even Matt's subplots are handled with grace and panache. And what's more, Animated Lizzie is seamlessly woven into the narrative, allowing the audience the same intimate look inside Lizzie's head that we've grown accustomed to via the television series.

And since the series has ended, these are the only fresh "Lizzie" stories we are going to be graced with, and the format of them being mysteries is nothing short of inspired.

On a continuity note, from the general attitude of characters towards one another, and certain events referenced, one gets the feeling that the story takes place during Season One (Lizzie's 7th grade year). Sometime after the events depicted in "Rated Aargh!" but before Season Two.

All in all a great "Lizzie" product. Highly recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2004-06-15

It was a fun, easy mystery and kids will enjoy it. The series is really wholsome which parents will appreciate. I think its worth the money you'll pay for it.

    Book Description

This practical companion to Reviving Ophelia and Real Boys shares the concerns of preteens in their own words and advises parents how to approach them confidently and effectively. Many parents may not want to know that their eight- to fourteen-year-olds are already facing serious issues and have questions such as: Why do people make fun of me because I am from another country? When will I know when puberty has struck? How do I deal with the feeling that no matter how good I do it's not good enough for my parents? What happens when a friend beats you up?Without support, understanding, and assistance, the anxiety these dilemmas evoke could undermine a child's confidence and self-image as he or she matures. In a reassuring style filled with practical pointers, Ellen Rosenberg, veteran educator of thirty years, tells parents how to open a discussion on the day-to-day questions their preteens have but may be reluctant to share. Handwritten queries from preteens are included in the text, and as they attest, your children do want you to know what's really going on.A communication bible that parents will return to again and again, Get a Clue! is sure to help parents and their children become closer and form a bond of trust that will last through middle school, high school, college, and beyond.

    5 out of 5 stars A sensible, practical book.......2002-04-09

Get A Clue! A Parent's Guide To Understanding And Communicating With Your Preteen by wife, mother, and certified sex educator Ellen Rosenberg is a sensible, practical book for adults on how to relate with one's child about such complex and difficult topics as self-esteem, physical maturation and sexual development, alcohol and other drugs, friendship and popularity, death and suicide, and much more. Get A Clue! is very highly recommended as a solid, "parent friendly" resource filled cover to cover with examples, useful advice, and practical information about teaching young people the facts they need to know to guide their own lives as they grow up.

5 out of 5 stars This book really helped us to help our children........2000-04-16

This is a great book! My wife and I are "older" parents of three children. Sometimes we feel very far removed from the issues they face - especially our youngest. We attended one of Ms. Rosenberg's lectures and were very impressed by the directness with which she was able to address real issues that were very important to the children present - in an intimate fashion, offering the child who was the "source" of the question total privacy, saving any embarrassment which might evolve from a direct one-on-one discussion. You really had to be there to see how the children opened up and participated in discussions they would not address directly with their parents. When we learned of "Get A Clue" we immediately bought it. It is a mirror of the discussion group. The answers are real. The suggestions about how to approach different issues are on target. We use it as a reference and it has been effective for us because it addresses the things on our childrens' minds. The reality of the issues presented and the suggested responses are right on target. It really has worked for us and I certainly suspect it will work for others.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Problem Solving!.......2002-03-06

I am a third grade teacher, and my students love this book! I put a new mystery on the wall outside the classroom door each week. Every schoolday, I have my students trying to problem solve before they ever enter the room. Parents are challenged by these pictures too. At the end of the week, we have a great class discussion on the possibilities to solve these puzzles. I wish there were more than 2 titles to this series!
