4 out of 5 stars Better writing than Left Behind--Too many dated references.......2005-03-14

Jeffrey's plot and pacing match that of the Left Behind series. Where he shines is characterization. I could relate to Daniel, the guy-next-door hero, who stumbles upon eternal truths in through realistic, uncontrived, yet fascinating events. Likewise, the President's assistant is a compelling modern woman, who manages to be "normal", feminine, and yet a true heroine. We grow to like these people, care for them, and thus become engrossed in the story.

An odd factor in Jeffrey's writing--and this shows up in the follow-up novel, Dawn's Early Light, is how romance plays into the story. The love angle builds suspense, takes up a fair amount of pages, and yet ultimately ends up seeming like a factor the author through in because it is supposed to be there.

The key distraction for this story--seven years after the initial publication--is that too much of the material is dated. Basing a novel on Y2K proved a death nail for many novels (check out the reviews of Bob Bridges an Apocalyptic Fable for an example of the merciless ratings such books can receive). Beyond the Y2K element, several world leaders were mentioned, along with reasonable but ultimately erroneous guesses as to how they might play out historically. The story is still compelling, but the danger of a plot heavily based on a current news phenomenon is that once the issue passes, the writing loses its ability to attract.

Bottom-line: Read Dawn's Early Light first. It's written by the same authors and is less dated. If the writing proves compelling, this story is worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars The characters were so realistic, I dreamed about them!.......2001-04-07

I, too, have read the LEFT BEHIND series, and thought none other could be so all consuming. But I was transported from the first page and became totally involved with the characters. One night, when I awoke from a dream about the book events,I found that I was praying for the safety of the characters! I would say that WAS involvement. I have watched for additional books. When?

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but far from great.......2001-01-24

Flee The Darkness is not a bad novel, but that's about as far as it goes. If, like me, you have a taste for Christian Endtime fiction, you'll probably enjoy this novel. There's nothing wrong with it but, like many other novels in this genre, there's nothing standout about it either. If you're interested in reading a truly exceptional novel about Revelations, I would suggest We All Fall Down by Brian Caldwell. Caldwell uses Revelations, not just to imagine what it might be like, but to truly explore the nature of God an mankind. I read the novel three months ago, and I'm still thinking about it, God and myself. Flee is a good novel, it just doesn't come anywhere close to We All Fall Down.

3 out of 5 stars Simply splendid, refreshing, vibrant, electric, & supersonic.......2000-03-13

Only 2 words can describe this book - A triumph of nouns with a graceful multitude of adjectives, verbs, and the occasional splattering of gerunds.

5 out of 5 stars Flee the Darkness.......2000-02-07

Having read all the "Left Behind" series up to the most recent one ("Assassins"), I did not expect to find another book that would challenge the amount of enjoyment and encouragement that I received from that series. Much to my delight and pleasure, this book far surpassed that series. It is extremely well written and much more entertaining than any of the "Left Behind" series. I am presently reading the sequel, "By Dawn's Early Light" and find that, it too, is an excellent book. These books are definitely written for believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and who are eagerly awaiting his return. If you enjoyed LaHaye and Jenkins books, you will most certainly enjoy this book.

Ex-CIA operative Lacey Montgomery is a liar, a murderer, and a fugitive--or is she? Former Green Beret Jim Micah must either prove her innocence or bring her to justice. Too bad his heart won't stay out of the way. With a little girl's life and national secrets hanging in the balance, Jim and Lacey must trust God to help them flee the secrets of the night.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars You'll LOVE this book!.......2007-04-06

sigh... - one of my absolute favorite fiction heroes! Jim Micah has been crazy about Lacey for as long as he can remember! Right up until the moment that she married his best friend, and beyond. Now, he must choose whether or not to believe the woman who has been accused of killing her husband. Will he follow his heart?

Lacey's been waiting forever for Micah to make a move! That's how she ended up married to his best friend. But now, her daughter has been kidnapped and she is running to the only man she ever really trusted. Will he help? Or has she made a terrible mistake?

And while you're waiting for your copy to arrive, check out Susan May Warren's website for a link to the online novel "Waiting For Dawn" - the prequel to "Flee The Night".

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-07-06

I really wasn't sure about this book, but it was simply wonderful! The plot is gripping and the characters are simply wonderful to dive into. Definitely a must read in Christian suspense!

The backstory is interesting and is added in throughout the book as Lacey and Micah come to grips with their pasts and what they know about each other.

5 out of 5 stars Susan Warren does it again!.......2006-03-28

Ex cia operative Lacey Montgomery and former green beret Jim Micah have a past. She married his best friend instead of him and then killed her husband and betrayed her country.
Now on the run...her daughter Emily is missing...who else can she turn to? Can Jim find it in his heart to extend mercy to a former friend? Can he help her without losing his heart or betraying his country? What would God have him do?

Susan writes a thought provoking novel introding Team Hope. A Search and Rescue Team who rely on God's guidance.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't buy the premise, didn't buy the story.......2006-01-14

I'm afraid I have to be devil's advocate here about Flee The Night. I didn't finish it for a number of reasons, not the least of which was I couldn't buy the hero and heroine's relationship from day one. Micah HATES this woman, yet when she calls, he drops everything and comes; there are times he asks himself, "Why am I doing this?"--which the reader is also asking!--yet he never gives us a plausible answer. After awhile, a character who keeps acting against his/her own gut instincts, history, and inherent nature, without good reason, just comes across as not knowing what he or she really wants. Someone like that, I won't root for.

And as for the heroine? I couldn't feel anything for her. Maybe it was because the book was so poorly paced that I kept paging backward, then forward again, trying to figure out what--if anything--was really happening from scene to scene. (A lot of times, nothing was.) Maybe it was because the author gives us little slices of angst here and there, but nothing I could latch onto and really feel for.

But most of all, I ended up giving up on this book when the plot went from mildly implausible to plain silly. The most glaring example of this is a scene where heroine is on the run--has to HIDE, mind you--but she needs clothing and shoes. So what does she do? Ask Micah to run somewhere and get her a few things to wear? Tell him her size, lock the door and keep the shades drawn? That's what any normal woman being pursued would do. What does this one do?

She goes shopping. Not at a little hole in the wall store where no one is likely to see her, but at Wal-Mart...where she walks into the store barefoot and they let her in anyway (like that's going to happen?)...and then this odd couple starts playing little flirting games while she's trying on clothes.

To which I can only say, "Huh?"

Sorry, folks. I can't jump on the bandwagon here. Maybe a plot goof that large doesn't bother some people, but to me it's a fatal flaw. I put the book down, and it's not getting picked up again. While some of the images Ms. Warren uses are wonderful, and some of her writing is beautiful, the book as a whole fails.

    Janny

    5 out of 5 stars More than 5 stars.......2005-11-05

Several good reviews of the book have been given so I will just say that I would give this more than 5 stars if I could. What a really good story. If you go to her website you will be linked with a free read called "Waiting for Dawn" and it gives the prequel to Flee the Night. Trust me, you won't be disappointed with this book. When you get it be sure to get Escape to Morning, it will save you an extra trip to the bookstore. Susan May Warren does exceptional work!

      Book Description

Author Peter W. Van Arsdale presents first-hand fieldwork conducted over a 30-year span in six refugee homelands ranging from Sudan to Bosnia. This expert research bridges the emergent refugee and human rights regimes, while addressing theories of obligation, justice, and structural violence.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 6 case studies of refugees.......2006-10-15

Arsdale reports on 6 refugee situations scattered throughout the world, across 30 years. The settings vary from Papua (also once known as West Irian) to Ethiopia under Mengistu and to Bosnia during the Yugoslav wars. Several are mostly resolved by now, including the latter 2 examples. But his narrative shows a common thread of systemic and often unnecessary displacements, killings and sufferings.

There is not a romanticising of some of the combatant sides. In Bosnia, we see how all 3 forces, Slav, Croat and Muslim, had their human rights violators, who took full advantage of oppressing others.

The biggest unresolved case in the book is Sudan. The events there are unfolding daily, in a slow motion conflict sprawled across a vast underdeveloped land. Where many areas are cut off from the international press and scrutiny, leading to well founded fears of horrific behaviour.

Not all the refugee situations in recent years is covered by the book. The biggest omission is Congo. But within the author's ability, he has done a good job of reporting and analysis.

4 out of 5 stars Excitement + Suspense Collide In 'Flee'.......2005-10-13

Gaia knows how the old saying goes. "Old habits die hard." Which is why she's following in her father's footsteps, and abandoning all those around her. Everyone who loves her, included. After all, things with her and Sam are totally screwed up. He's acting like a crazy maniac, and always looks as if he hasn't slept in weeks. And now that Ed is up walking - or, rather, hobbling - around, there are new feelings coming into play. Feelings that didn't exist for Gaia until now. And while Gaia feels that her father has abandoned her for the umpteenth time, she's having reservations about moving in with her Uncle Oliver (Loki), even though he seems like he only wants what's best for her. But Mrs. Moss wants to protect her too. Now Gaia must make the ultimate decision, live in a home with Mrs. Moss where she is showered with gifts, and has a mother-type figure to watch out for her; or move in with Uncle Oliver, someone who holds the title as a real relative to her, but whom she hardly knows.

When I first began reading the FEARLESS series, I felt that the storylines were repetitive in each installment. However, as I got farther and farther into the series, I could see the excitement and suspense building up, and that is exactly what shined through in FLEE. As always, Gaia's kick-behind attitude was in gear and ready to roll. However, it didn't come out as much as in previous books. FLEE deals more with the relationships evolving between Sam and Gaia; Gaia and Mrs. Moss; Ed and Gaia; and Gaia and Uncle Oliver (Loki). It also goes into great depth following Gaia's father, Tom, as he traipses all over Europe, trying to uncover Loki's newest secret, one that will shock all readers. Filled with exciting chase scenes - on foot, of course - as well as interesting gunfights, and technological warfare, FLEE is an amazing addition to the series, and sets the pace for the next book in the series, LOVE.

3 out of 5 stars I fled from some storylines in this book but others weregrea.......2003-03-26

I'm on book #26 right now (which is great!) but I skipped some of the books in the teens because the storylines seemed slow moving as mud. This book I bought a few days ago because I was desperate for any book in the series to read until Shock comes out. I am not so glad I did. I ended up skipping the Sam and Tom parts because I really didn't think they were that interesting and instead read the Heather, Ed, and Gaia parts (my three favorite characters. T. is added to that list when she appears in later books). So there I was reading an exciting Gaia part then BAM! it would be sniveling Sam being bullied by Mr. Psycho Josh and torturing himself again and again and again that he can't tell Gaia that he's a pawn used by Loki and his gang. Yawn. Still, the 100 or so pages I did read were great with Ed getting closer to mustering his courage and telling Gaia his true feelings. Let me say, the books after this get better and better, imo.

ok, i have not actually READ this book yet, so to speak. but i am OBSESSED with the fearless series, and my friend has pretty much told me everything that happens in this book...lol. neway, it sounds really awesome and i can't wait to buy it. also, the end is VERY interesting. it has A LOT to do with Sam, and when i heard wat happened i started laffing, becuz i dont like him very much (Ed is better lol). i now need this book very badly becuz i want to read wat happens to him!lol. neways, i just have to say HAHA about Sam. im goig to stop now, since im acting like an insane person! ok, well, i wrote this cuz i was bored, um BYE!

4 out of 5 stars one of the best so far.......2002-10-30

this series had started to get real boring. pascal proves in this
book why most of us are so hooked to this series and most of us are not even teenagers. this book deals with gaia trying to sort
out the truth between her father and her uncle, which both are saying they have her best interest at heart and that the other
twin is the evil loki. the book ends with lots of love and sacrifice and it is extremely well written. if you are coming late to the series as i am, pick up the next couple of numbers
because there is nothing more irritating than finishing a book
at 2 in the morning and having to wait until 10am the next day
to go to the bookstore and get the next issue.

The same review printed twice is not two customer reviews. That said, this is a terrifically entertaining book, written with love for its subject (think PSYCHOTRONIC as opposed to GOLDEN TURKEY AWARDS) and even, or especially, fun for somebody who might have been "too old" to read JIMMY OLSEN, etc. the first time around. Other people's nostalgia is a gas!!!

5 out of 5 stars Heaven is Hilarious.......2003-07-30

This is a deftly presented overview of some of the quirkier artifacts of our popular culture. I can remember quite clearly when I was a kid, reading under the covers, way after my bedtime, the tale of how Superman's pal, Jimmy Olsen, was transformed into a giant turtle. When I got done with it, I tilted my head in newfound bemusement. Yeah, it's something of an epiphany when you realize that you really CAN waste your time even when you're eight years old. This slim volume (nowhere near long enough) also shows that it doesn't matter, comics are still fun.

When I got done with it, I tilted my head in newfound bemusement. Yeah, it's something of an epiphany when you realize that you really CAN waste your time even when you're eight years old. This slim volume (nowhere near long enough) also shows that it doesn't matter, comics are still fun.

        Book Description

Daniel Prentice's technological skill helped save the world from the deadly impact of Y2K in the popular thriller Flee the Darkness. But that victory didn't stop the encroaching evil.

In this gripping sequel, tension mounts in the 21st century as a Russion-Arab invasion of Jerusalem seems imminent. Now Daniel must guide NSA chief Captain Michael Reed in the battle ahead. More than a battle for the land, the offensive could be the fulfillment of Ezekiel's ancient biblical prophecy of Gog and Magog invading Israel. As the world shudders in response, the invaders offer Israel a choice: surrender or be obliterated.

As the State of Israel fortifies itself against the coming onslaught of missiles, biological weapons, and an invasion force attacking from all four borders, Reed and his Israeli counterpart, Sergeant Major Devorah Cohen, exhaust every military resource to prevent a nuclear war. Soon Reed and Cohen realize that the real battle they face is one of spiritual origin-for which no military drill could prepare them. Will Michael and Deborah find faith to confront the enemy?

Never have the forces of evil been stronger, the stakes higher, or the world's possible destruction nearer than By Dawn's Early Light.

4 out of 5 stars More depth than Left Behind but frustrating romance angle.......2005-03-14

Jeffrey's book is primarily an apocalyptic thriller, and on that score earns a 4+. The action and plot are fast-paced, much like the Left Behind series. However, the author's characters have much more depth. Michael and Devorah prove to be compassionate, intelligent, and interesting protaganists. The love-tension creates added suspense for much of the book. On the other side, the evil Russian general and his mistress, Alanna, offer the psychological insights that are masterful. We see inside the mind of grandiose bitterness in the general, and the emotional roller coaster of an amatuer mole with Alanna. Rich, addictive writing here!

My major complaint with Dawn's Early Light is that the last several chapters proved too long of an anti-climax. In fact, I sensed how things would pan out even before they did. Additionally, the tension-building forbidden love between Devorah and Michael proved interesting for awhile, but ultimately became frustrating. Jeffrey had a purpose for this element of the plot, but he overplayed it.

Bottom-line: This is an excellent novel, well worth reading. It's almost cheaper to buy it used than to spend gas going to the library to borrow it.

3 out of 5 stars Good But In Error.......2002-09-27

The writing and story is actually very good, but because I believe that the authors underlying biblical views are in error, that it looses it's relevance.

5 out of 5 stars Novel Surrounding Predicted Future Middle East Scenario........2002-02-10

A gripping and enjoyable account of possible world events surrounding the future invasion of Israel prophesied in the Book Of Ezekiel.

In this account Russian and Arab forces invade Israel amid the spectre of a nuclear holocaust, intent upon the eradication of the Jewish State.

Very timely and appropriate in view of current world events and very readable.

A pre-cursor to the follow-up entitled 'Spear Of Tyranny', which is based around events following the above invasion and the rise of the Anti-Christ and his one-world government/religion.

Both books are very enjoyable and will hold your attention from cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Winner of the 2000 Christy Award for Excellence in Fiction!.......2001-06-15

By Dawn's Early Light is a wonderful read, convincing a panel of judges to award it the 2000 Christy award for excellence in Christian fiction in the end-times category. (BTW, I, for one, am tired of seeing inane reviews where someone who obviously hasn't not read the book trashes it just so he can praise WE ALL FALL DOWN.) By Dawn's Early LIght is a fast-paced, sensitive portrayal of end times--truly a winner! I love prophetic novels, have read several, and this is one of the best!

2 out of 5 stars Not very good.......2001-06-11

I picked up this novel hoping that Jeffrey would offer up something new. New insight into Revelations, new thoughts about what it means to be a Christian, or just a new, exciting endtimes novel. Unfortunately, he accomplished none of that. Cashing in on a trend without the talent to pull it off doesn't strike me as the most Christian of endevours. If you're looking for a quality book about Revelations, try Brian Caldwell's We All Fall Down instead. It's intellegent, compelling, and utterly engrosing. It puts this book to shame.
