an absolute necessity.......2005-03-20
This is one of those books that you get and wonder how you ever lived without it. I struggle in my walk with Christ, but this book is something that I am continually coming back to for wisdom and insight. My copy is about 5 years old and has notes scrawled all over the margins, yet I'm constantly gaining new ideas each time I reread a section. With every read, whether it's the first or the 40th, you experience something fresh. One of the best things about this book is the spectrum of topics covered--no matter your age or experience as a Christ follower, this is a book you really need to read.
And while you're at it, check out Seeking Peace: Thoughts and Conversations Along the Way. It was written by J. Heinrich Arnold's grandson, Johann Christoph Arnold. Mind blowing writing seems to run in the family...
It changed the life of Cassie Bernall.......2000-04-05
Friends of mine from Littleton Colorado told me that this book helped change the life of Columbine martyr Cassie Bernall. It is specifically mentioned in her life story "She Said Yes". This would have brought great joy to the author, Heinrich Arnold, who died in the same year that Cassie was born. A book like this is an amazing thing. The spirit that is captured in its pages waits quietly until discovered by a future generation who is then frees it for a blessing on their life.
Challenging and Inspiring - A great resource.......1997-06-16
I bought this book based solely on the publisher's reviews. I was looking for a book on Discipleship that would challenge my Christian walk, and also give solid answers to theological questions. In a personal, sharp way, Arnold does this. This book is a compilation of letters and notes that were put together by his community after his death. This makes the book great because there is no filler - it's packed with to-the-point insights. I recommend it to anyone. The only reason I give it a 9 instead of 10 is because only the Bible gets a 10! :
Book Description
Though burlesque has survived in the back of our cultural consciousness after being pushed aside by modern stripping in the '50s, the revival that began in the early '90s has finally brought burlesque back to the forefront of popular culture.
Evolving from an underground movement to a nearly mainstream fetish, neo-burlesque embraces a wide variety of modern interpretations all based on the classic bump and grind and "taking it off" with a wink and a smile. From classic tributes to punk rock revisionists, women of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds are rediscovering burlesque and reinventing it. A sense of heightened imagination, empowerment and energy are being delivered to the stage, perhaps even more so than during the historic heyday, the Golden Age of Burlesque.
Slipping behind the scene, Burlesque and the New Bump-n-Grind undresses the issues of feminism, modern popularity, and what exactly draws the unique and varied audience members to the shows. The women-and men!-of burlesque also receive their fleshed-out dues by a categorized peek into the various troupe styles including classical, re-creationists, revivalists, modern, circus, performance art, political, queer, bawdy singers and comics.
Peppered throughout the book are full-color and black-and-white photographs that fully instill the picturesque dance into the reader's mind.
Founder of one of the first neo-burlesque troupes, author Michelle Baldwin (a.k.a, Vivienne Va-Voom) has helped to bring the lost art of burlesque back to the forefront of pop culture. Baldwin has served as the creative director, choreographer, music director, costumer, financial head, and performer for her troupe, "Burlesque As It Was." Her deep immersion into this art form has provided her with a rare view into the growth and evolution of the revival.
Customer Reviews:
New Burlesque Represents!.......2006-06-07
I may be biased, since I appear in this book, but if I weren't proud to be a part of it I wouldn't recommend it!
Michelle does a wonderful job of describing the energy and glamour of the New Burlesque scene, with tons of color photographs to emphasize the passion this rediscovered art inspires. While striptease, even retro striptease, is nothing new, the current New Burlesque scene brings it into a fresh environment where the performances take on a new meaning and a new sense of pure joy. Whether you're a fan of girls who make you wriggle or girls who make you giggle, you'll love the performances of the ladies in this book--and the gentlemen, too!
Absolutely Delicious.......2004-09-14
Not only does this book serve as delicious eye candy, but the author does an amazing job interlacing facts with true experiences capturing the crazed phenomenon of burlesque revival. I really admire the energy that comes across in Baldwin's writing it makes me want to go out and try it! I would recommend this to all of you feminists out there who also like showing a little leg.
a worthy topic, but not the comprehensive guide it could be.......2004-09-03
As a costuming student, amateur burlesque researcher, and preformer, I was excited to see someone devote a book exclusively to new burlesque. The book has some cute pictures and a few quotes from some of the rising stars of the scene, but unfortunately, the overall content is shallow and the structure is jumbled. The format of the text is too jumpy to really provide a reader with a timeline and often repeats itself. Some rigorous cutting-and-pasting would have helped immesely on that front, but the more suble deficiency is the lack of academic analysis or critical commentary. It reads like a high school book report, merely stating facts and names, but not tying them together. Almost anyone could have researched and written this book by simply looking at a few burlesque troupes' websites. In fact, I wonder if that is what happened.
Until a more thorough text is published, get your history lessons from reviews in journals and magazines; the recent media blitz has got you covered. As for images, almost all the new burlesques soloists and troupes have lovely websites with gorgeous studio portraits and fun live snapshots.

Burlesque
Sexy, hot and very feminine!
This book could have been written by a history professor but it has a certain panache that can only say Michelle Baldwin has felt what burlesque was and IS!
Glamor! Showwomanship! Laughter! Burlesque is entertainment, glitz and glamor!
The greatest showwomen of the 20s - the 70s - knew how to use it and really get people interested and excited.
Burlesque- intelligent, sexy, rowdy & fun!
Want to connect with herstory and what's going on now? Glamor! Fashion! art! comedy! glitz! what a wondeful world!
and catch Michelle in person (I did at the Tattered Cover LODO in Denver - the Professor of everything wonderful! She's smart, she's educated! and she can really make you want to enjoy all that is Burlesque~ ) Wow! Incredible! What a total turn-on! A joy for every Girl & Boy!
Neo-Burlesque - all that is Sexy, Women and FUN!

shocking, tantalizing and conquering ...........2004-07-02
Reviewed by: John A. Mangarella for Small Spiral Notebook
When author Michelle Baldwin found her way into Denver's Mercury Café to see her first burlesque show, a career was not only born but the first lines of this delightful study of burlesque took shape. The is not just a book, it's the best type of book, a time machine back to the last century when English actress Lydia Thompson toured the U.S.A., shocking, tantalizing and conquering the American stage.
Baldwin's meticulous research, her obvious affection for burlesque, both legendary and contemporary, compels every page of this book to dance before the reader's eyes with a history of women who were not only ahead of their time but stole the heart of America at every whistle-stop. From the crowds that mobbed the Chicago World's Fair ogling the notorious Little Egypt through the advent of Mae West as she descends on Broadway with her first show, provocatively entitled "SEX". This book packs a lot of fast facts that peel away with the ease of silk clothing dropping to the stage floor.
She presents the burlesque of comedy and song, of variety acts and supple curves. From the hootchy kootchy dancers of the 1890's through Sam Scribner's Columbia Wheel, the sexually censored main circuit of burlesque houses that competed with the wild ride of the Minsky Brothers who founded stock burlesque troops and rented inexpensive theaters in poor neighborhoods that boasted cheap tickets and expensive sizzle. Eventually, Minsky's rise caused the powerful but restrictive Scribner to stop censoring his shows by allowing nudity and blue humor.
Ms. Baldwin's anecdotal choices are fascinating. Who invented the modern striptease? Was it Mae Dix in 1917 who accidentally removed her collars and cuffs to ignite the audience into pure wildness? Or was it Hinda Wassau who was pushed onto the stage half dressed by a stage manager? Or was it... read it for yourself-where the clothing falls is tantalizing. You can almost hear the brassy music rising from the orchestra pit as mentions of Gypsy Rose Lee, Sally Rand, Ann Corio and Georgia Sothern form their own girl shows and take them on the road. Even though they danced in Middle America, in small theaters and carnivals, they filled every seat and brought cosmopolitan glamour to venues that were way, way, way, way off Broadway. The author covers burlesque's high popularity as well as its low periods when threatened by repressive times as well as a new breed of strippers that are somewhat hardcore. Even though burlesque overcame censorship its toughest battle was with an era that was much more permissive. This is where Ms. Baldwin's book separates as provocatively as Sally Rand's fans. A major portion of "Burlesque" is devoted to "The New Bump-N-Grind" and all those suggestively creative performers that have successfully picked up the mantle of Gypsy Rose Lee, Ann Corio and other legends to show us what IS burlesque today.
Ms. Baldwin relates the resurgence of burlesque with even more passion because she's living it, thus endowing the second part of the book with a "You Are There" style that really does allow the reader to tour with all the contemporary performers. Jennie Lee, known as "The Bazoom Girl" in her heyday began assembling her massive collection of burlesque memorabilia on a goat farm in the California desert. Following Miss Lee's death, Dixie Evans, a fellow dancer who is a stunning Marilyn Monroe look-alike, began transforming the memorabilia into a museum. Dixie Evans also started the Miss Exotic World Competition which has drawn larger crowds each successive year. She also wrote the forward to this book.
"Burlesque And The New Bump-N-Grind" stems from the past and blossoms in the present and future. Ms. Baldwin's chore at describing the world of burlesque as it is today encompasses hundreds of entertainers and dozens of festivals and shows. Make no mistake about it, as this amply photographed book demonstrates, today's burlesque is every bit as sexy, funny, risque, respectable, wicked and addictive as the movements of Gypsy Rose Lee or Ann Corio or any of the great acts from decades gone by. The sumptuous photographs indicate that these new women of burlesque have taken some of their inspiration from the past. There are exquisite costumes reminiscent of the Ziegfield Follies, something to remind us of Weimar Berlin and Marlene Dietrich's The Blue Angel. There are costumes from the Silent Era and later Hollywood as well as some from the Old West. Ms. Baldwin covers all the ground, touching off on some of the men performing baggy pants comedy as well the bands that put some blood pressure into the music as the women bump-n-grind.
In quoting a paragraph from the book about contemporary burlesque's allure: "Modern glamour is the sleek, sexy aesthetic of technology. Everything from the ultrathin models featured on magazine covers to the tiniest cell phone to the most unobtrusive stereo speaker sets the pace of modern life. Burlesque glamour, on the other hand, is larger than life, filled with innuendo, and coated with glitter. Burlesque offers something different than the standard mass-produced culture. In burlesque, girls can have curves, often big curves. They can be loud and funny and still be sex symbols. The basic elements of burlesque are things that are missing from contemporary life."
"Burlesque And The New Bump-N-Grind" teases and pleases. On a historic level, Michelle Baldwin's book should be a welcome addition to any writer's research library because of the many different areas of burlesque she covers. As for just pure fun, a bit of skin that reveals a heart much more naked, "Burlesque And The New Bump-N-Grind" is a very pleasurable read. Buy the book, and then check out the listing of websites advertising shows all across the country. Then buy yourself a ticket and go have some fun.
Book Description
Girls! Girls! Girls! The carnivals, the girls, and the scams-a journey back through time to the glory years of traveling adult entertainment. Many of these photos have never been seen before, and no one has published a book exclusively devoted to the women (and men) who performed in girl shows. Included are 200 photos from 1900 onwards in A. W. Stencell's book about this cultural phenomenon. Covered are girl shows' European origins, their American developments, their heyday after World War II, and their ultimate demise in the face of men's magazines, strip clubs, and x-rated videos.
Customer Reviews:
A Favorite! Totally Titillating!.......2006-06-07
I teach burlesque dance and lecture on burlesque and striptease, and this is one of the books I always recommend--I consider it absolutely essential for students of the genre. It's a fabulous history of girl shows, and it's fun and informative for anyone with any kind of interest in the subject. It goes beyond stagnant discussions of the place of striptease in society, and gives the reader an opportunity to understand that there is too much variety in the field to ever settle for one definition of what constitutes real burlesque. The text is a pleasure to read, with plenty of detail that is bound to be news to both scholars of the leisure arts and folks seeking a little breezy entertainment. It includes descriptions of other people involved in the Girl Shows, including the producers, the patrons, the variety artists, and more. And the pictures are amazing--what a collection Stencell has!
Cotton Candy and Peanuts anyone?.......2005-11-22
D'you ever wonder where all the stars of Burlesque went during the hot summer months before air conditioned theaters? Well, they went on the road in carnival shows, and this is the story of that world. This is a lovely, delightful, very informative book!I was enthralled by the stories of these plucky men and women who travelled across the country bumpin and grindin. This is a great book to read after watching "The Greatest Show On Earth". I especially enjoyed the sections on Burlesque performers, and the chapter on "Hooch" dancers was interesting too (kinda gives you some insight on why Vera Ellen was so horrified to be discovered as a hooch dancer by Gene Kelly in "On the Town"!) This book is an absolute must buy/must read!!!
Fan Dances and Fantasy.......2001-09-07
For anyone who is old enough to have seen a "Girl Show" on the midway of a traveling carnival, this book is a great piece of nostalgia. For those who have never seen or heard of these titilating venues, this book is a look at a forgotton age. The profuse illustrations and photographs are priceless glimpses of our societies changing moral compass, and the interviews and transcripts of early ballyhoos are a hoot.

Grinding It Out.......2006-03-15
When I decided to learn street skateboarding I was in a dilemma many skaters will identify with, I wanted to start at the top with some spectacular flip tricks and rail tricks that would have my friends jaws a-drop. But soon enough I realized that skating is an art of slow, small steps, and you have to give yourself room to reverse, always an escape hatch. Evan Goodfellow's introduction to flat world curb tricks was just what the doctor ordered.
I've never seen Goodfellow in person, but the clips I saw convinced me he knew what he was talking about. I started on page one and never really looked back. Funny to think of pro Evan posing for the photo set where he just ollies up a curb over and over again, must be like child's play to him. Soon enough he's onto switch stances and the "half cab noseslide," one of the most surprising of the curb tricks he outlines. On the wax debate, Goodfellow places himself firmly on the pro-wax team, even going so far as to suggest we abolish skate parks in favor of imitation city curbs and lots and call them our parks.
You have to hand it to the photographer too. They certainly don't skimp on photos unlike some of the other so called intros to skateboarding. The photographer, Tadashi Yamaoda, prints his slides in a clever greyscale system so that the deep background of each picture, the city skyline and so on, appears only in a fog of light gray, and the important details of the foreground are rendered in sharp black clarity. Very useful. A disclaimer at the beginning of the book says to wear safety equipment while skateboarding, but neither Evan nor any of his fellow models doing the tricks in the book look like they're wearing any gear, maybe a jockstrap possibly? Oh well, we get the picture, it's a sport that takes balls and talent.
Outstanding.......2005-10-08
I've seen the guy skate before, both in California and up in Canada, and have been blown away by the stuff he's been able to pull off. He lays his book out very well, showing the beginner, and the want-to-be-pro alike, exactly how to pull the best tricks off for themselves. Most instructional skating books are useless, but this one is actually very valuable, which is the first one like it that I've seen anywhere. You won't be disappointed in getting this book.
Great! .......2005-09-21
This book is the best I've read. The trick photos are cool and show me exactly how to do them. I wish he wrote books on surfing too.
Super informative.......2005-09-21
This book really gave me some great tips on learning new curb tricks. I found it to be really informative and well put together. I like the fact that the author is a skateboarder himself and can therefore offer valuable instruction from experience. I would recommend this book to any skateboarder looking to take their skating to the next level.
This book is awesome!.......2005-09-21
Finally, someone has written a book about skateboarding that can actually help you learn tricks. The photo sequences and step by step instructions are really helpful and the way the book is organized makes it really easy to learn how to improve your skateboarding. I would recommend this book for any skaters who are looking for some totally useful advice from a guy who has the skills to back up what he is saying. Evan Goodfellow knows skating! Check out the book for yourself and read what a pro skater has to say about the fastest way to learn grinds and slides.

Book Description
Asked to contribute to Artforum's "Top Ten" column, David Robbins used one of his entries for "Electricity: That we don't annually celebrate Electricity Day is unfathomable." That sense of whimsy, even amid an advanced critical sensibility, makes this collection of essays from the past quarter century a great read. A regular contributor to magazines such as Real Life (in the 1980s), Purple Prose (in the 1990s), and Artforum, Robbins is one of the first artists and critics to investigate the art world's entrance into the culture industry. His work reflects on the spectacle, the transformation of the position of the artist in the visual system, and the future role of the spectator in art. This publication also brings together his key interviews with Richard Prince, Allan McCollum, and Clegg & Gutman; his writings on television, Hollywood, and Warhol; and contributions to his "Institute for Advanced Comedic Behavior."

Better than Porterhouse Blue.......2001-05-10
Although this book is the sequel to Porterhouse Blue, I liked it better. Not as good as Wilt or Blott on the Landscape, but still pretty good. My other favorites are Ancestral Vices and The Great Pursuit.
England's funniest writer strikes again!.......2001-04-01
Unfortunately Tom Sharpe is not the most prolific author, consequently it is exciting whenever he chooses to grace the marketplace with another offering. Grantchester Grind is a sequel to the Porterhouse series, and is yet another wickedly irreverent satire from the master.
Laugh out loud.......2001-02-11
Typical Sharpe fare-but reveals more about Sharpe himself than his usual. A Sharpe fan will find his understanding of the author considerably deepened. Henry Wilt and Commandant Van Heerden could have collaborated on this book. I was grateful for this, but some reviewers seem to be disappointed. Funnier than average. As many uncontrollable laughter moments as Indecent Exposure. Logical development of Porterhouse Blue. I will never forget how to make a Dog's Nose. Sharpe's understanding of American business practice may leave a lot to be desired, but I don't see why this bothers some people so much.
Grindingly boring.......2000-08-11
Sharpe is living on his reputation with this one. I suggest you avoid buying it and read Porterhouse Blue or the Throwback to see Sharpe at his very best.
Sorry Tom, but you need to keep your writing sharp!
Not his best, but still a Sharpe classic!.......1998-12-18
Although not his best, Sharpe still tickles the correct ribs with this, his longest book. Porterhouse Blues was Sharpe's first venture into the academic humor that Kingsley Amiss exploited so well in Lucky Jim, and in Grantchester Grind Sharpe takes the reader deeper into the daffy world of Cambridge. For one who missed Sharpe's 10-year hiatus, Grantchester Grind and his latest book, The Midden, was a welcome return for the reigning king of British humor. Let's just hope he doesn't keep us waiting that long again for his next work.

The battle of the sexes rages on in this smart, witty, and extremely timely new comedy by the phenomenally popular
Jane Heller! This time she poses a provocative question: While it's common for deadbeat husbands to dodge their alimony payments by nefarious means, what happens when a woman plays by the same fast-and-loose rules?
Manhattan financial planner Melanie Banks likes being on top. She's addicted to the money, the power, and the success only hard work and long hours can bring. When she first meets and falls in love with pro football player Dan Swain, she admires his work ethic too. But then they get married and his career comes to a screeching halt, and suddenly she's the one bringing home the bacon -- and falling out of love with him. In the years -- years! -- since he last held a job, he's become a paycheck-devouring, couch-sitting mooch, and he likes it that way. And Melanie decides it's time to lose the loser.
Divorce, however, isn't all it's cracked up to be. For starters, Melanie's forced to share custody of Buster, the couple's adorable dog. And married or not, she still has to support the incomeless Dan in the princely style to which he's become so infuriatingly accustomed. Whether the overpaid lawyers term it ""alimony"" or ""maintenance,"" the bad news is that she has to pay it -- and keep paying it until death do them part.
But there is one loophole.
If she can dump her ex on some other unsuspecting female for ninety days and get him to violate their cohabitation clause, she's off the hook -- forever.
Sound tricky? Not for Melanie Banks. The first step is to secretly hire Desiree Klein, New York's premier professional matchmaker. It's not long before Desiree supplies Ms. Right (or at least Ms. Right-for-Ninety-Days) and Dan walks straight into the trap. Before Melanie knows it, her lazy ex has a new love, and by the end of the ninety days he'll be out of her life -- and her checkbook. Revenge is going to be so sweet ...
Unless Melanie gets caught in a little loophole of her own creation.
Dan's fresh start has revitalized him. His new sweetheart is miraculously transforming him into a responsible, caring, focused go-getter. In other words, he's becoming precisely the man Melanie always dreamed he could be. And now she wants him back.

pug fart jokes an underwhelming thrill.......2007-08-31
The characters never come to life, it's paint by the numbers; given this uninspiring drivel a plot outline would suffice ....do people really buy this stuff? And the pug "fart" jokes were something one would expect to hear in a mentally challenged grade school. Find something you're good at, Jane.
All you need is love?.......2006-10-05
Melanie Banks is seeing red and his name is Dan Swain-her ex husband.
Melanie and Dan were married for about a decade before a injury on the football field (he was in the NFL) sidlined not just Dan, but Mel as well as their marriage.
Because Mel was the primary breadwinner she is forced to pay Dan allimony and she does not like it. It does not help that Dan is spending the money on expensive things that he does not really need just to make her mad.
Then Mel comes up with a plan with the help of her friend. There is a clause in the divorce decree that says that if Dan lives with a woman for 90 sustansive consective days he forfits the allimoney. The plan that Mel and her friend come up with involves setting up Dan with a women so that he forfits the allimoney.
After a few bad dates Dan meets Leah and they begin to cohabitate shortly afterward. At first Mel is thrilled that her plan works, but then she notices that Dan is starting to chance back into the Dan that she fell in love with. She is guilty about falling back in love with her ex as well as pulling the wool over his eyes-but she trys to do it. Does Mel get to have her cake and eat it too? Read An Ex to Grind
A totally unlikable main character, and a mean spirited story........2005-12-21
I've enjoyed previous books by Jane Heller, but this one was a stinker. Mel, the main character, is a mean-spirited workaholic. Her magic change of character at the end of the book just wasn't believable. I disliked her through the book, and didn't like her better at the end. Why did Ethan like her, anyway? The only thing she seemed to have going for her was good hair and big boobs. Her personality was rotten.
There was also a petty attitude regarding women paying alimony. Why shouldn't they? I was left wondering if Jane Heller got stuck with a nasty divorce settlement.
I won't be rushing out to buy any new books from this author. Try the library for this one.
great book.......2005-10-18
I had to put in my 2 cents here as all the reviews seem very negative. I greatly enjoyed this book. Sure, Melanie is a little unlikable in the beginning, but she becomes much more likeable by the end. The ending is not at all predictable and Heller keeps the plot rolling along with her usual wit. It could have been a bit funnier, I suppose, but I thought it was quite good. If you're a fan of Ms. Heller's it's a must buy/read.
Annoying, self-centered main character .......2005-09-21
Melanie Banks, a Manhattan financial planner had been married to Dan Swain, a former New York Giants football player. He supported Melanie through Business School, and sent many big name players her way as she was getting started. He was injured and that was the end of his career. Melanie would not listen or understand why Dan would not get a job. She left him and moved into a place known as the "Heartbreak Hotel". Melanie becomes obsessed with Dan's spending habits. Determined to stop paying Dan alimony, she concocts with the help of her friends an improbable plan to find Dan a love interest. Dan falls in love with Leah Purcell. Melanie fails to see how much Evan, another resident in her building, is interested in her. Naturally, things turn out for the best, or do they? The ending leaves you hanging. Normally I'm a big fan of Jane Heller, but this was a weak effort.
