1 out of 5 stars Dating Inc:.......2007-07-14

I found this to be a laborious read compared to other dating books on the the marketand wouldn't recommend it,as it was too business focused and serious. Dating is DATING and should be a fun and entertaining read !!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous and fun. Tons of great dating wisdom you don't want to miss!.......2007-06-12

Jeff and Carol's Dating Inc. is perfect for any woman who's passionate about winning in business and in love. As a fellow author Make Every Man Want You (or Make Yours Want You More): How To Be So Damn Irresistible You'll Barely Keep From Dating Yourself!, I love seeing what else is out there so I can make solid recommendations and support people in having the life and relationships of their dreams.

What I like about Dating, Inc. is that it's based in respect, honesty and fun. They're completely against manipulation and game playing (which never works long-term in business or love) and encourage women to bring authentic compassion and straight-forward common sense to both the boardroom and the bedroom. This book also gives women permission to take an enthusiastic go-getter attitude when it comes to dating and relationships, just like we do in business. Great work Jeff and Carol!

5 out of 5 stars Smart and Practical!.......2007-05-31

Dating, Inc. was an easy read with smart and practical advice that I could put into use right away. Instead of feeling hopeless in the dating world, I feel like I have a fresh outlook that I know will help me find the 'one'. I love the 'cut to the chase' and 'can do' attitude in the Corporate Memo's - they are both realistic and inspiring and I find myself going back to them time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Clever.......2007-05-29

This book is unlike anything out there that I'm aware of. Think of how hard we all work at our jobs, and how our best results at the workplace come from smart planning, prioritizing, organization, and effort. Why not use the same approach in our love lives? This is the essence of Dating, Inc., and it is done in an organized but FUN way. The authors (male and female) help you think through what matters to you in a potential relationship, and they do it largely in the form of written exercises and very clever concepts & catchphrases. Who would have thought developing an action plan could be so much fun? The book is so smart and should definitely help anyone out there find who they're looking for.

5 out of 5 stars A fun yet practical dating book!.......2007-05-28

If you are in a dating rut, I highly recommend this book! I love that it's written by a married couple so you get both a man's and a woman's perspective. And the written exercises throughout the book are both fun and thought provoking. They forced me to answer some tough questions and focus on what is really important to me. Overall a helpful and creative guide to dating!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good but a bit unbelievable.......2006-07-21

First of all I am a kid but I read many an adult book. (mainly espionage). It's a good read if you don't read very much, need summer reading but havn't read alex rider books by Anthony horowitz. I wish the author would have talked a bit less like a teenager instead of using words like [...] Also, if James were real he would have been dead before the book even started because of the rediculous amount of bullying. Of course, I have never seen anyone bullied at my school so this seemed like a bit of a foreign topic. Robert Muchamore seems to know more about video games than he should. For example the only games that were on a jet were old n64 games. Plus, if your queezy dont read this book. James, at one point must kill a chicken. He does and blood and well, chicken waste sprays everywhere. There is a bit of romance but nothing to extreme. I was very surprised to see cherub agents which are all kids smoking and drinking whenever they please. Of course james gets terribly drunk and becomes nearly unconscience. There doesnt seem o be any real danger after every trap is either inefective or easily avoided. Further There is onl a very vague villian and the book goes without a true espionage ending. However this book was still very enjoyable

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant .......2006-01-08

I saw this book tucked away in a bookshelf in a small old bookshop in london. I read the back and it sounded different and quite cool so I bought it. I started reading it and just couldn't stop. This book was funny, exciting, and so well written. Take it from me a twelve year old who reads almost nothing but fantasy actually enjoying a book that was somewhat realistic. Now thats a big for me! You should definitley get this book you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting thriller!.......2005-12-10

The Recruit is about a kid called James who is violent but he doesn't mean to be. His parents didn't like each other so he lived with his obese mother, Gwen, who is the head of a shoplifting empire, and his sister, Lauren. His mother died so James went to a orphanage/boarding school. There he got into a lot of trouble so he had to go to jail. He was drugged and when he woke up he was in a facility called CHERUB with no idea how he got there. It turns out that this is a kid spy training facility. From there on his life is never the same, from impossible training to exhilarating missions. I recommend this book to young adults.

5 out of 5 stars Glad this made it to the USA!.......2005-09-17

Bought this book on a whim and am really glad I did. My son and I both read this book in a single sitting. My daughter is next to read it.
If a young person (or like me, not so young) is into Alias or other secret agent type stories and movies they will love The Cherub books by Muchamore (how do pronounce that anyway?).
The thing I found most remarkable about the books is there great ability to suspend disbelief. I found myself having to recall whether the books were based on fact or not.
One caution however, the author has done an excellent job of dealing with rough and tumble situations (such as drug use, criminal behavior and violence) but these are not candy coated and thus may not be appropriate for all children. That said, try one!

4 out of 5 stars Adolescent Agents.......2005-09-07

James Choke isn't a typical 11-year old. His mom is probably the fattest mom he's ever seen, and she's a top-flight black market dealer to boot. Sure, he can get anybody in school anything they want for half off, but he can't escape his mom's looming shadow. In the space of one day, though, his luck turns incredibly sour: he's kicked out of school for fighting a girl, gets his butt kicked by the girl's brother, has to deal with his sister's dad who's around for another handout, and his mother dies from drinking while on medication. While in a depressing children's home, he's recruited for a spy agency that's so secret no one even knows what the initials stand for. After getting a hold on his life, choosing to go the way of the spy, and undergoing a grueling 100-day course, he's sent off to infiltrate a hippie community that's planning a violent demonstration. In the middle of that, he meets the girl of his dreams whose father is a cop that doesn't like him.

Robert Muchamore is, according to the author information, a private investigator working in London. The CHERUB series, four books so far, are making their way from Great Britain to the United States.

James Choke is a great character whose appeal fluctuates between being a colassal screw-up with out-of-control emotions and a kid just trying to survive who cares deeply about his little sister. He's just clever enough to get himself out of life-threatening situations, but then to get himself constantly in hot water with the authority figures at the spy school. Young readers will root for him and empathize with his problems because, spy work aside, they're not so very far from those of most adolescents.

There is a small warning with this book. The language may be more explicit than some parents are comfortable with, pushing the book definitely into the teen arena, but featuring a 12-year old hero (he has a birthday during the course of the novel). Also, his reasoning seems to be on par with a fifteen or sixteen-year old.

THE RECRUIT sets up the series nicely. Lots of action, lots of character, and plenty of spy background. A timeline dossier is also included, showing the author has thought about the special MI-5 department he's developed. Fans of Alex Rider will probably enjoy these books. There's more dialogue, but the situations are a little more edgy and adult.

He also instructs on how to navigate the political organization by building networks, developing mentors, understanding the political maneuverings of the work environment.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for a new graduate.......2007-04-24

Great book. I found this book is much more practical than many other related books. It contains countless specific tips and steps you can take. And as a previous review notes, there are plenty of books on how to land a job, but this is the rare one that tells you how to excel once you have the job. Very readable, valuable, practical and even humorous at times. The last thing I'll mention is that I like the way the author drew on interviews from a number of sources. I'm suspicious of books that tout the approach of just one successful individual. I might not be like that individual. I find the interview approach much better because it identifies common themes and approaches that have worked for a range of people.

4 out of 5 stars Accuracy of the book reflected in the cover image........2007-02-16

The content of the book is accurate and new. But, most of all it is practical.

The major focus is on attitude and doing good work. Between these two focuses you will do great. The book explains how to maintain and brand yourself with an attitude, while also providing the tricks of the trade in doing good work. The book is simple and straight forward. There is very little B.S.

I am at the beginning my career and have seen great results so far. After reading the book, I have given to a colleague and to a friend. Both have enjoyed it and wish they had read it earlier in their careers.

5 out of 5 stars A 'bible' every new hire needs to make the most of a new position........2007-02-09

Numerous guides cover how to land a job - but few focus on how to succeed as a new hire. From New Recruit to High Flyer covers everything from project and people management to understanding office structure and relationships, providing real-life examples from those who have succeeded as new hires. Common pitfalls and how to overcome them are included in a 'bible' every new hire needs to make the most of a new position.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice for anybody with ambition and will to grow.......2006-11-24

This book has been great and it is helping me a lot. Even though I have started my career some years ago I am still missing some key points. The fact that the author is not only giving his own advice, but he is using the best bits and pieces from people that went to Harvard. I guess that quite a few of these are really intelligent and ambitious guys.

Topics that are covered are how to get the right attitude every day at work, how to be systematic in your approach to your career, how to develop the right tools for doing research, how to write and speak effectively, and how to communicate in different situations, and other three important topics that are hard to address when you are just starting in the business world: networking, mentoring, and politics.

If you don't think you know it all get this book it will have a possitive return on investment!

      Book Description

It's America's boot camp, 88 days of drills, inspections, rifle practices, war games, grueling physical exercise and a regimen that separates the men from the boys...

Boot is an insider's account, told by a former Marine and veteran journalist who went back to Parris Island to see if today's grunt measures up to the crack troops he served with in the South Pacific. He follows the recruits of Platoon 1036 from Day One through every step of the rugged training that transforms raw recruits into a fighting elite. His searingly honest, you-are-there coverage brings these unforgettable weeks to life...and lets anyone who's been there judge for himself if today's brand of "tough" is tough enough for a real Leatherneck, a man proud to be a Marine.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A "sanitized" view of USMC bootcamp.......2007-10-07

I went thru USMC boot training from Aug-Nov 1985, and this book followed a platoon about 6 months after. Its chronology of bootcamp for this era is correct, except we went thru 12 weeks of training instead of the 11 week cycle shown here. We also trained with the M16A2 service rifles in 1985. The "insider's view" that Cruz portrays is still VERY "censored" and provides a somewhat cynical view of supposedly "watered down" and "low stress" training for this and future generations of Marine recruits. NOTHING could be further from the truth! The "rules" that he quotes from the training SOP are misquotes, intentionally implying inferior quality of Marines that graduate from both MCRD's in comparison to prior generations. Yes, physical abuse is banned from toay's training regiment... just as it ALWAYS has been! Yes, there is more oversight involved in the training in comparison to the prior decade. But the Marines from the 1980's and forward have MORE than proven their mettle in combat and in training and leadership roles. Of all of the services, the US Marine Corps is the least politicized, socialized and desensatized! This book would leave the reader with a totally different opinion of the true grit and strength of our beloved Corps. For those of us who endured it, we beg to differ...

4 out of 5 stars Big hit with pre-teen boys!.......2007-09-20

I purchased this as a gift for a pre-teen with aspirations to have a career in the military. His reaction to this gift was just over-the-top excitement.

According to him, this volume had everything that he was looking for.

I suspect that if he was a little older, and actually nearing a decision to inlist, a more sophisticated and updated source of information would be necessary. For its intended audience, this was perfect.

      3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-07-30

I thought that this book follows some recruits thru boot camp. When I read this book they mention some recruits and their problems going thru boot camp. This book however presented in considerable detail the process of becoming a Marine and associated information about such things as the process to become a drill instructor. As a civilian, this was sometimes a little too much detail. Overall , I still would recommend this book if you are a military buff or just interested in the Marines.

2 out of 5 stars OUTDATED! HIDDEN AGENDA!.......2007-06-13

I went through boot camp at MCRD San Diego (Oct '74-Jan '75) so I know something about the subject matter.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this book is badly outdated (written in 1987, twenty years ago). The "Crucible," the defining modern USMC boot camp experience, isn't described in this since it was introduced afterwards. And one reviewer assured us that in 2002, when he was in boot camp, swearing at the recruits was very much in vogue among Drill Instructors - so that's another divergence between real life and this book.

"Boot" is only partially about USMC boot camp. It's really about the idiocy of the SOP the D.I.'s must adhere to. Or used to adhere to back in 1987. Or partially adhered to. Whatever. At any rate, this book is not really about what it claims to be about. And reading it is a bummer.

I see a number of young reviewers here... if you are considering the Marines (good for you) and are naturally curious about boot camp, don't settle for outdated scuttlebutt! Go to marines.com and get the latest information. (All the more so since, right now, Marines are getting involved in real combat in Iraq.)

I'd give this book one star, but what the heck? It's about the Marines.

      Semper Fi!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellence!.......2005-07-06

Personally, I love this book! It may be a bit factual for some readers, but for "nitty-gritty detail" persons like myself it is a wonderful read. Has a lot of inside info on the day-to-day routine of bootcamp. Also has alot of history and background information about Parris Island and the Corps. I think it has helped prepare me for the rigors of basic training.

      4 out of 5 stars unsolved problems.......2007-05-07

The authors try to understand how people are recruited into Al Qaeda. Not just to be suicide bombers in Iraq or Afghanistan. But also in Britain or the US. The problem is that it is very hard to profile the average recruit. They vary tremendously by age, occupation and education.

Another problem might also be more relevant to developed countries. To try to predict who, amongst non-Muslims, would tend to be converted to Islam and, specifically, to become terrorists. Here, also, the authors have found it difficult to predict the psychological makeup of such converts. These people pose an especially acute danger, because they can more easily blend into the general population. There is nothing obviously and outwardly "different" about them. No surprise that these converts are highly valued by Al Qaeda.

These problems will not go away, sadly. The book gives us an appreciation of why more work is needed.

      Book Description

A collectors item from the anti-colonial struggles of the seventies. This text details how the US military and CIA colluded with Solider of Fortune magazine and others to send white mercenaries to fight for the Ian Smith regime in Rhodesia. While the nitty gritty details are mainly of historical significance, given the heavy reliance on "contractors" in Iraq and elsewhere, the broad outlines of this work remain relevant today. Originally published in the 1970s, ths new introduction has an introduction written in 2005. From the introduction by Jon Dough: "Although the CIA's mercenary operation for Zimbabwe had failed in the end, the machinery remains as a covert weapon that can be restarted and put to use in new imperialist interventions and wars in the Global South. That's why this investigative report still has useful knowledge for everyone tracking the bloody footprints of the u.s. empire."

1 out of 5 stars Fictional Nonsense about the Bush War.......2007-08-12

As a former soldier in the Rhodesian security forces (army), Soldier of Fortune personnel were the last people that one wanted to be seen with. These armchair commandos generally created an air of mistrust and were not seen accompanying the troops but seen swilling drinks at one of the many hotel bars and talking trash. Nothing in this book makes any sense. The last thing the CIA would do is use Soldier of Fortune magazine (SOF) to recruit any mercenaries. In fact, one could count the 'mercenaries' on one hand and those who would be called mercenaries were actually farm hands that were armed. The Rhodesian government had a dim view of killings outside of the military or police. This book is filled with false statements and is very fictious in every detail. It is laughable at times.

      1 out of 5 stars Good God!!!.......2007-05-23

I threw my copy away! Liberals are worse than cancer, and have wreaked this nation. The book, although having some historical value is a crusade for the liberals of the world. Throw away your guns. We can all live in peace. Yeah right. Dont waste your money.

      4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-05-12

Pretty interesting piece of information. It comes off as propaganda and it is but alot of it is factual and worth a read.

3 out of 5 stars Liberals and Rhodesia.......2006-07-22

This re-print is interesting only to demonstrate the liberal basis of its authors, as well as their complete ignorance (or complicity with the Soviet Union) regarding knowledge of the "Rhodesian event." It more or less blames Bob Brown and Soldier of Fortune magazine ( as well as the U.S. Reserve military) for keeping the Rhodesian government viable against "freedom fighters", trained and supplied by the Soviet Union, China and North Korea. History, as usual, has shown that Rhodesia was one of numerous losses to the "Cold War", aided by the direct actions of then President Carter and Andrew Young. It has now become a non-existentant entity, and embarrassment to all of Africa. Purchase it with the understanding that it was complied as propaganda for college campuses and the liberal media and should be retained as evidence of "liberal thought process.
