5 out of 5 stars A "Universal" treat!.......2007-05-05

I think Douglas Florian's new book, 'comets, stars, the moon and mars' is his most expressive yet.

Beginning with the poem "skywatch," two children look at the sky. The next poem is "the universe."

Die cut "planet" holes move the reader deeper and further through space. From "mercury" to "venus" to "the earth" to "the moon" the poems continue in order according to their distance from the Sun. Comets, black holes and the mystery of what lies beyond are also addressed. Florian's ability to weave facts and fun are on full display here.

The bright color palette echoes the amazing views from the Hubble space telescope. This generation of kids has grown up looking at Seymour Simon's books about the solar system and the Universe. They have seen the colors that are out there.

Check out the Harcourt page about the book and download Florian's Poetry Kit. The "Practical Poetry Pointers" are some of the most best tips for writing poetry with kids that I have ever seen.

You have Gotta-Have-It.

5 out of 5 stars Recaptured me. .......2007-01-18

I first started reading Mars when it was published in the shoujo manga magazine Smile, it stuck out to me but when Smile stopped printing in July 02' I didn't pick up on any of the series they put out there. Then about four years later I looked back on them with my best friend and Mars was the one that recaptured my interest. Since I own the first two books from Smile, I picked the third copy at Borders and I have continued to collect them (up to volume six now). Considering that it had been almost half a decade until I reread this series, it's saying something that I would still enjoy it so much (even more so now).

This particular volume starts going more in depth with Rei's twin brother Sei who had committed suicide when they were in Junior High. Oddly, Kira seems to share some very eerie similarities with him which raises some more serious questions. It also takes place as Rei is motorcycle racing in Suzuka and Kira is completing her painting of him. One of my favorites quotes is from Rei's friend Kyoko (a fellow motorcycle racer) when she says "Watching Rei's riding makes you realize that racing was made for men. Of course there's the physical strength aspect but our minds are structured differently. The instict to fight is purely male."

Mars is a manga worth picking up because although it may seem like a simple "good girl bad boy" love story, they're many powerful observations about life that transcend the romance itself, and great characters that keep the romance interesting. Awesome read.

5 out of 5 stars A good manga book!.......2004-03-12

Just getting hooked off Maralade Boy, I thought that was the greatest book in the world, then I saw an advertisement on Mars.I thought it was quite interesting , so I said I wanted to get it. As lucky as it might sound , I was in the library when I saw Mars 1& 2 .Well I might have taken both of them but I knew my friend wanted one. After I read 1 & 2 , I was hooked but not as much as my friend .She ordered numbers 3,4,5,and 6. Right now she's waiting for 7,8,9,10,and 11.So do think someone would buy the whole series if it wasn't good? Well think again it's a great manga , perhaps the best.If you like romance and relationships I think you'll like it it even has action too. Also if you LOVE motorcycles there will be alot of it because Rei likes motorcycles.

5 out of 5 stars Wasn't popular in Japan for nothing........2004-02-29

Great! Emotional and moving. You really do fall in love with Rei and Kira. They're very real and the artwork is great.

5 out of 5 stars Mars is a wonderful series........2003-07-06

Mars is a beautiful story of a bad boy and a good girl who alter eachother's lives. The two main characters are recovering from tragedies in their past, and sharing those haunting memories with eachother, they begin to escape the ghosts that shadow them and begin with a fresh start that they share together. I've never read a better series of graphic novels. This is one that I think anyone could enjoy. The characters are wonderfully created, and the art unique. It is a story that I will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars Mars. Love it........2003-03-26

WOW!!!

What can I say about Mars that isn't already said. Mars is wonderful. It's in a class of it's own.

The artwork is realistic, fresh, crisp and enjoyable to look at and read. Attention to details. It's just wonderful.

The story is well thought out. It's good girl meets bad boy love story with ups and downs, secrets to be revealed and love triangles. The plot is well formed and enjoyable. The art is realistic. It doesn't give you a toothache from being too sugary sweet like alot of mangas out there.

There is alot of more mature scenes further ahead. There is some swear words. If you don't want to handle some physical violent scenes, swear words, or sexual scenes, than look else where.

5 out of 5 stars Goosebumps Rules!!!!!!.......2007-06-09

I just LOVED this book!! Starting with an innocent
easter egg hunt, you end up biting all of your fingernails off!!

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever made........2006-12-27

This was such a great book. It had these little aliens who were kind of scary. I thought they were cute, and when the main kid is captured, they spring into action and save the day!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best Goosebumps book.......2005-07-27

Egg Monsters From Mars was a really good book. When I started reading it, I couldn't put it down and I read it in two hours flat! It has mystery, although it's not too scary and the egg monsters from mars turn out to be friendly. It's good but not my favorite goosebumps book. 4 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Egg Monsters from Mars.......2005-03-02

Egg Monsters from Mars was a pretty good book. The main character in this novel was a boy named Dana Johnson. Something crazy happend to him in this story. I liked some parts of the book and disliked other parts. Now here are some of my likes nd dislikes from reading this book.

The first thing I liked was at the very beginning of the book
when Dana's sister Brandy had an egg hunt at her party that turned into an egg war between the party guests. i also liked the fact that Dana had a very adventerous time in this sory like the time Dr. Gray tried to kidnap him. Dr. Gray was a bad guy who told Mr. Johnson a lie that he had never seen Dana before when Mr. Johnson asked him this question at Dr. Gray's lab.

i disliked that the author went a little too oveboard on the details about the egg monsters. i also disliked the book's ending left you hanging because dana brought his parents to the lband the egg monsters and Dr. Gray had disappeared and no reason was given.

Overall I thought it was a good book. I would give it three out of five stars. L would recmmend this book for fourth graders going into fifth grade. You should read this book because if you do, you will probably like it, and you will want to read the rest of the books in the series of Goosebump stories by R.L. Stine.

5 out of 5 stars Egg Monsters From Mars:.......2001-11-26

Now this book is just as interesting as the title is!!! Its more sci-fci then horror. Its not scary, but is VERRRRRY interesting!!!

Dana Johnson is a normal 12yr boy with a totally bratty sister who get's whatever she wants whenever she wants. She demands an egg hunt for her birthday party... And so of course she get's one!!!

Now Dana to his suprize finds an egg the size of a softball in his yard with purple viens, and it throbs... He keeps the egg in his sock droor to keep it from his little sister. Soon one day he finds it hatched in his sock droor. But its nothing that normally fromes from an egg... Its a small yellow, gooey, slimy creature with beedy black eyes. Dana is shocked, but he wants to know what it is and he takes it to the science lab in his town to have them check it out.

And that's just where the fun begins!!!

To find out the rest read this interesting book it has and interesting ending as well!!!

God Bless ~Amy

Book Description

In Freddy and the Men From Mars, the trouble starts when a newspaper reports that six little creatures, believed to be the only Martians ever to have visited Earth, have been captured single-handedly by Mr. Herbert Garble. This news wouldn't have disturbed Freddy and the other barn animals had not the paper further stated that their friend Mr. Boomschmidt had invited Mr. G. and his men from Mars to join Boomschmidt's Stupendous and Unexcelled Circus. Freddy, ever ready to maintain his reputation as a detective, immediately suspects a hoax, and quickly sets out to expose it. How he manages to do so, with the help of Jinx, the Horrible Ten, and several other familiar allies-and a band of real Martians who turn up just in the nick of time-makes for one of the most hilarious of all the Freddy tales, a story that is simply out of this world!

"Freddy is simply one of the greatest characters in children's literature!" (School Library Journal)

5 out of 5 stars Pig 200, Rats 0.......2002-11-29

Freddy the Pig and his friends from the Bean farm have come a long way from their first trip to Florida in 1928. Now they have a Farm Animals Republic, a bank, a newspaper, an atomic powered car and even a rocket ship. But, despite the prestige and renown of being Bean farm animals, their basic nature had remains the same - they are honest, forthright, and darned funny.

Things bode ill for the Boomschmidt Circus when Herbert Garble (who has never had an honest day in his life) joins them with six strange looking men from Mars - each a foot high, in red pajamas and wearing red fluffy whiskers. Freddy is sure there is some fraud involved, but the Circus is making a ton of money and the last thing the farm animals want to do is hurt Mr. Boomschmidt. Freddy, Jinx the Cat, Uncle Ben and Mrs. Peppercorn head out to investigate.

What they find is pretty fishy, or rather, pretty ratty. Mean old Simon the rat and his family are up to their necks in trouble making, and Garble's Martians are just the start. If the rats have their way the Beans will be forced off their farm and Uncle Ben will lose his rocket ship. Drastic times call for drastic measures as the animals prepare to go to war.

If things are strange with fake Martians, they get stranger when a flying saucer full of real Martians shows up to investigate. Soon there are rats pretending they are Martians, rabbits pretending they are rats pretending they are Martians, and real Martians stirring the pot. As Freddy nearly is sent to Montana to become pork chops and bacon, everything hangs in the balance.

As always Walter Brooks' tales combine humor and suspense with a natural sense of values that apply equally to animal and man. If the science in this book is a bit silly it is still engaging enough for its intended readership. And the simple lessons of friendship and doing what is right never grow old.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Bean Sci-Fi.......2002-07-15

I was prejudiced against Bean's fifties incursion into space after the tedium of "Freddy and the Space Ship," but "Men from Mars" proved to be a surprisingly strong title. My six year old son laughed a lot and was thrilled when one of his favorite villains showed up. A good one!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it,but a couple mistakes.......2005-10-20

Awesome pictures, good descriptions. You WILL want to keep reading it.There are also a LOT of grammar mistakes, but that does not actually mess up the book.If you like sailor mars,I recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars Meet Sailor Mars: Fire.......2005-10-16

This book is mostly pictures with writing next to them about the picture. It is all about Rei (I hate it when they use the American names). It tells you about her transformation, powers, best episodes, and there is a section where they ask her questions in the back.
In some parts you can tell the information is about the Japanese show instead of the American show, which is a lot different. (I think the Japanese show is probably better, but I only have two of the uncut videos, and they are a lot better than the others, actually.)
This book isn't perfect. There are several mistakes. In one picture it shows a mark on Rei's forehead, but it says it is on her cheek. There are several other mistakes like this, too.
Also, people who really like Sailor Moon already know all of the info in this book from the show and the manga.
My only complaint is that this book is mostly narrated by Usagi instead of Rei. The other books are narrated by the girl they are about, but not this one. And there is nothing about SuperS or Stars in this book except about three pictures from SuperS.
If you have just become a fan of Sailor Moon, then you should read these books. But if you have watched a lot of the show and read the manga, like me, then you'll already know evrything in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Sailor Mars Data.......2005-01-17

I gave it a 4/5 because it mainly concentrates on the lame North American dub version, I just liked the pics!

4 out of 5 stars Behind The Scenes With Sailor Mars.......2004-10-23

Yet another easy-read Scout Guide with bits of info, and cool pictures. The most interesting parts of this book for me, were Sailor Mars' transformation and attacks, although they weren't in very good order, the pages showing Raye's different clothes and favorite fashions, and the 50 Secrets Of Sailor Mars section. I noticed that unlike the other books, the index in this book was in the back, and instead of pictures of the other Scout Guides in the back, it just showed the names in the front. But those two minor things should not affect your decision on whether or not to buy this book in any way, because they are simply differences, not cons.

I noticed, too, that Sailor Mars/Raye seems to change in every picture. In some pictures, her face is thin and mature, in others, it's plump and her eyes are big, and some pictures look more like someone who would be Raye's almost-identical older sister. They're still great pictures, though. Especially the exclusive ones, which are, in my opinion, prettier then the ones taken from the TV series and from the movies.

I would recommend this book if you are new to Sailor Moon, and are wanting to learn more about Sailor Mars, or if you are a Sailor Mars or Sailor Moon fan in search of an easy and entertaining read. I would NOT recommend this book to die-hard Sailor Moon fans looking for information they don't already know, because this book, like I said, is basically just stuff taken from the TV series.

CAUTION: This book contains very mature content, and should not be freely read by children under twelve or thirteen.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing...T_T.......2004-08-22

The Sailor Mars Scout guide is devasting! When I ordered this book, I was expecting a guide filled with wonderful information. I got the complete oppostie of 'Wonderful Information'. A lot of the information in this book is either wrong or not very detailed. There's also lots of spelling mistakes and grammer mistakes. The only good thing in this book is the pictures. I highly recommand that you get another scout guide. The other scout guides are much better!

Although she and the others are technically free to do as they choose, their former owners are reluctant to do that. So, as long as they remain on the plantation, they all know their lives won't be any different.

With that in mind, the slaves slowly begin to leave -- seeking long-lost relatives, or starting over in a brand-new place. Patsy, who arrived on the plantation with a group of men as a toddler, has no idea who her parents are. With a sick feeling in her heart, she enviously watches other families reunite, knowing that no one will come for her.

Even so, Patsy's too busy to feel sorry for herself long. Now that slavery's ended, she and the others are free to learn, and they're eager to get a school established on the grounds. But problems with securing a teacher force Patsy to reveal her secret -- some time ago, she learned to read and write. Soon, Patsy is enjoying a newfound importance as her fellow ex-slaves depend upon her, affectionately calling her "Little Teacher" -- and helping her gain the confidence to embark on a new life of her own.

This book is an excellent way to get anyone, from children Patsy's age to adulthood, to understand just what freed slaves endured as they struggled to make the huge transition from captivity to independence.

3 out of 5 stars And it did.......2006-03-07

I Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly

In this book Pasty or "little teacher," a slave in South Carolina, learns how to read through two white kids when they play a cruel, sick joke on her. While Annie pretends to be the teacher at a school Pasty and the little boy "pretend" to learn, but Pasty isn't pretending. After receiving a journal from Annie as another cruel joke, she starts writing. As an injured slave no one pays much attention to her until she reveals that she can read. Promised a plantation school and land, the newly freed slaves on Davis Hall Plantation are furious when they don't get either. What will they do? Read and find out!

This book is O.K. but it isn't a book that I would just pick up and start reading. I like historical fiction, but this book just doesn't make me want to read it. Don't let my opinion influence you though, try it and you might like it, I am just a picky reader.

5 out of 5 stars The Effect on People's Life.......2005-12-15

We can never know the life of others unless we have put ourselves in other people's shoes. Life can be so hard these days so we need to get along with each other because we might need some one to do something for us one day.

Pasty is talking about how her life was in 1865 at Mars Bluff, South Carolina, she could not be taught how to read or write, and had to work in fields, all the time. She also got beat when she did not do the right thing, she had to cook for the owner, and I know that is a way no one would want to live, like she had to. It was a hard job to do when she had to be out in the cold doing work.

Pasty's life can make people want to have a new experiment if they were in her shoes. If that was my life I would want to be able to get out of the situation she is in, that is something some of us might would break down in cry sometimes it is hard when you can not see your mother that often her mom came to see her the owner of the slaves made her leave but refused to leave she got arrested for private property and for trespassing.

Everybody's life can change in a spilt second. Have you ever felt that your life has gone through different pathways, some people can be going through things that make you want to get angry around the clock, every body can feel if they have lost control of what they have done in the past, sometimes you just have to give it to God for your wrong doings and the pain you went through once in your lifetime.

I would recommend this book for any person of any age. It is a great book reminding people of how much they have got to be thankful for and, how much freedom you actually have, during the moments of your life when the world has put you through things that make us wonder why life can be so hard.

5 out of 5 stars Where to begin...........2005-03-26

This book is one of the best in the entire series in my opinion. The story takes place just after the Civil War on a plantation, and though the negros on the place expected life to change, it hasn't changed at all.

One of the things that make this story one of the best is Patsy herself. Instead of giving her a perfect life, the author gave her anything but that. Patsy hobbles, one of her legs is shorter than the other, she stutters and stammers, and because of this, everyone presumes that she is stupid. She is anything but. She also longs for a family, but doesn't even know who her parents were.

This is an outstanding story, one of the things that make this story good, once again is the heroine. Patsy is perhaps one of the best characters written. This is one of the best of the "Dear America" series.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2004-12-28

The moment I started reading that book, I couldn't put it down! It was AMAZING! It's about a girl named Patsy living in the Reconstrustion era. As many of the other slaves leave, who are now freed, she wonders about her life and if she should leave her plantation life. She learns a lot about herself and life in general. But I won't give away the ending... :-X I recommend it to all!!!!!!
