Book Description
In World War II, 59,000 women voluntarily risked their lives for their country as U.S. Army nurses. When the war began, some of them had so little idea of what to expect that they packed party dresses; but the reality of service quickly caught up with them, whether they waded through the water in the historic landings on North African and Normandy beaches, or worked around the clock in hospital tents on the Italian front as bombs fell all around them.
For more than half a century these women’s experiences remained untold, almost without reference in books, historical societies, or military archives. After years of reasearch and hundreds of hours of interviews, Evelyn M. Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee have created a dramatic narrative that at last brings to light the critical role that women played throughout the war. From the North African and Italian Campaigns to the Liberation of France and the Conquest of Germany, U.S. Army nurses rose to the demands of war on the frontlines with grit, humor, and great heroism. A long overdue work of history,
And If I Perish is also a powerful tribute to these women and their inspiring legacy.

And If I Perish.......2007-08-18
And If I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II Wow! This is, hands down, one of the best books I have read about World War II. Not only did it give the true story of the nurses on the front lines, but wove the chronology of the war, starting in North Africa, up to the end of the war. You don't have to be a nurse to be fascinated by this outstanding history of the the war.
courageous unsung heroines.......2007-01-15
"And If I Perish" is a wonderful book! I was enthralled by the courage of these unsung heroines and had to put the book down several times when my eyes misted over & my throat became choked up.
I was surprised to read that Army Nurses jumped in the water & went ashore alongside the troops during the North Africa landings. They were under fire & died at Anzio as the field hospital was within range of German guns. Clearly-marked hospital ships were bombed in the Mediterranean and nurses survived, not one, but two such sinkings. I was shocked that the story of these front-line nurses was suppressed for so long because the government feared a "backlash" from the public.
For too long the sacrifices of this generation of brave women have been unpublished. Of the dozens of books I have read on World War II, there has been hardly a mention of the role women played except on the home front.
This book should be placed in every school library -- not only to keep the memory of the actions of these Army Nurses alive, but to provide role models for the future.
Attention! women directors & producers: There needs to be a movie about these nurses.
Should be required reading.......2007-01-13
My mother was a nurse in the 95th Evacuation Hospital, one of the units featured in this book. Though she was not interviewed, she's the nurse on the left in the photo of two nurses and a doctor in the OR. They're wearing scrubs and she's got a mask on, but it's her! I thought I knew all of her stories inside and out, but reading this book I realized how humble she was in the telling. When I read about the hospital ship being bombed and the constant shelling at Anzio, the fact that she survived amazed me. I cried when I read about the 95th's tour of duty at Dachau Concentration Camp because I couldn't -- and still can't imagine -- what it must have been like. In recent years, the focus on WWII nurses' experiences has sharpened. My mother has been interviewed for newspaper articles and the archives in D.C. I don't think women have been given nearly enough credit for service in our nations' wars, but it's about time. This book could have been called Band of Sisters. To this day, my mother is uncomfortable with the label "hero," but she's mine. To "Smitty," "VJ," "Slem," and "Wells," I salute you.
Reporting WW II nurses' sacrifice, bravery, and contributions.......2007-01-08
Mankind has insufficient understanding of what womankind has brought to the table.
Unfortunately, American culture has too often not given women the credit and reward they deserve. Monahan and Neidel-Greenlee have created an expansive chronicle of nurse (primarily women) contributions throughout the WW II fields of combat. While I do have some criticisms of the writing style and the authors' focus priorities and interpretations, my critiques are immaterial compared to the importance of more people understanding the outlines and frameworks of the massive, intelligent, and sacrificial efforts these women freely gave.
My Mom Was a WWII Nurse.......2007-01-03
My Mom was in the Army Nurse Corps in the EAME Theatre and received 4 Bronze Service Stars and 5 O/S Service bars during her military service. I was always interested to know what experiences she had, however she was reluctant to speak of those memories. After reading this book, I can understand why. "And If I Perish" is a great read to help one understand the dedication of the women of World War II and what they had to endure.

Charming Slice of Late 1970s baseball.......2001-07-20
This really is a charming book, even if you're not a Tigers fan (and I'm not). Great reading for a business trip because it's a bunch of short chapters that can be read one or several at a sitting. It's well-written, funny, and full of baseball insights that have been borne out in the 20 years since the book was written. It's not one of the 10 greatest baseball books ever, but it's solidly in the next class.
A classic book of baseball memiors from a lifelong fan.......1999-09-21
Art Hill's book is great reading for any fan of the game of baseball. Though focusing on one season of the Detroit Tigers, Mr. Hill shares memories of past seasons, favorite ballplayers, and some of the history of the game which he happened to witness from the unique perspective of the baseball fan. An easy and enjoyable read, Mr. Hill takes us on a trip through his lifelong love affair with the game. Though Mr. Hill spends a great deal of time writing about the Detroit Tigers, he does so without apology, because as he says, "They're my team. That's baseball";a feeling all fans of the game can understand. I highly recommend this book for any baseball fan.

Want to know what your sullen teenager is really thinking? Nancy Rubin has been teaching Social Living classes at a large, urban public high school for over 17 years. This book is based on her students' in-class journals. Sex, drugs, AIDS, racial identity, self-image--the students pull no punches, and neither does Rubin. Many of the journal entries are in letter form--to a parent, a body part, drugs, a romantic interest, a dead friend. This is an uncensored and consistently moving look at life in contemporary America from the teen perspective. And the news is not all bad.

Gritty and Real, Not for the Faint of Heart.......1999-12-15
As a teen worker I found this be a useful guide into the minds of teens. It didn't surprise me as much as it confirmed or validated my experiences working with teens. Be warned, if you are not ready to hear the truth in graphic detail, then this book is not for you. But, if you have an open mind, a caring heart and a willingness to really understand teens then this book is a must!
A gift with an impact.......1999-12-06
With the Christmas season upon us, the search for meaningful gifts for our teens can be as frustrating as grasping for ways to communicate with and guide our children through the treacherous waters of adolescence. ASK ME IF I CARE may be the perfect solution. Written by Nancy Rubin, a Social Living teacher of 17 years, it is a riveting collection of letters written by teens about the issues facing them today. Problems that we as parents never had to deal with in our day. The short first person entries by their own peers will gain and hold the attention of even the most reluctant reader. It's one engaging short story after another, all true, all relevant, all brutally honest. Your teen cannot help but identify and learn from the very identifiable experiences of people trying to navigate through the same waters with the same emotional tools as themselves. This is the gift that can change, even save lives.
An authentic, powerful collection of adolescent voices.......1999-11-03
I have used Ask Me If I Care for four years in my classes in teacher education and adolescent development. My students, who are finishing college and about to enter the teaching credential program or are currently completing their teaching credential, have consistently said they "cannot put the book down". Inevitably, students finish the book in days, completely absorbed in the powerful, sometimes painfully honest words of the adolescents in Nancy Rubin's book. Ask Me If I Care gives my students what they cannot get from a textbook on adolescent development; namely, the truth, the range of experiences and feelings and thoughts and opinions and needs and so much that this age group has to tell us. As a professor of secondary education, I am very grateful for this book.

Jessica/Jeremy/Jade love triangle.......2005-04-01
When Jade Wu starts working at House of Java,She starts to fall in love with Jeremy Aames, and starts to date him, too. Connor is starting to hit the bottle, while his mother is a recovering alchoholic.Jade gets a belly ring. I always wanted one,but Kim Possible doesn't have one. Stripperella does.
Book 18 in SVH Senior Year Series.......2003-05-13
For the past couple books ("Three Girls and a Guy" and "Backstabber"), Tia Ramirez and Conner McDermott have been more than just friends. Conner's been getting a little help from his mother's hidden scotch supply, though. That's an odd switch, considering his mother is a "recovering" alcoholic and he, apparently, is turning into one.
Liz Wakefield is still completely clueless about Tia and Conner's latest make-out session (in "Backstabber"), though, so she's still talking to both of them. In my opinion, she's forgiven them way too easily.
The three J's--Jade, Jeremy, and Jessica--are spotlighted a little more in this book, with Jeremy Aames going out with Jade Wu (She gets a navel piercing on their date. Surprisingly, I got a little queasy reading it, even though I've pierced that area myself.), which makes Jessica Wakefield more jealous. So, in turn, Jess tries to make him jealous by flirting with random guys, with some success.
"As If I Care" is an ok addition to this series, primarily revolving around the Jade/Jeremy/Jess love triangle. Nobody knows about Andy Marsden being gay yet (well, that changes, though, in the last few pages. To be continued in "It's My Life", I guess.), but at least he's looking into support groups. There are also some good notes, journal entries, instant messages, e-mails, as well as a suitable, if depressing, haiku by Conner on page 139.
A couple of triangles.......2001-06-03
OK, I love the SHV series. One of my friends got me hooked and now I can't stop. In this book, there are a lot of triangles of different sorts. First, the most obvious, Jessica, Jeremy, and Jade. Hello! Talk about a mystery there. Jessica still likes Jeremy, but only because he likes Jade. Jade knows that Jeremy and Jessica had a thing, but she went for him anyways. Now Jessica is jealous, Jeremy is confused, and Jade is just Jade. Second, the Ken, Ken's Dad, and Ken's dad's romance life. What a confusion this is. Ken had to lie to Asha because of his dad's mistake. Not good. He should have told her something else, something like, THE TRUTH!!! He shouldn'r have lied. I mean, yeah he knew he would have hurt her more, but still. Another triangle is Conner, Tia, and Liz. Now I know that you might say, oh, it's done, but I don't think it is. Even though Conner told Tia off, I don't think it was for good. Liz, on the other hand, is way too gulable for diaster. She just sets herself up for things. I don't know, maybe it's just me, or was this book one of the most unusual, yet most interesting yet??
This book is really good........2000-09-11
I really like Jeremy. I really enjoyed reading this book. The Jeremy/Jade/Jess drama was really good. Jade sure wasn't who she seemed to be. I thought before I read it that it was good that he had a girlfriend but now I"m glad he doesn't. What she did to him she deserves to be alone. I know now that Jess and Jeremy are gonna get back together I can't wait to read that. They are 2 of my favorite character. Last series I didn't like Jess but this series she's better and I even like her better then Liz who used to be my favorite charater. Poor Jeremy what happened to him was bad but I'm glad he found out what kind of girl Jade really is. I don't like her any more for what she did. At first I did bud din't know what kind of girl she really was. This book is really good. I really enjoyed it and i know you will to. I suggest you read it if you haven't its pretty good. I can't wait to read when Jess and Jeremy get back together they so like each other. At least Jess doesn't go around and cheat on her boyfriend like Jade did. I know she dumped him for WIll but she waited intil after they broke up and started kissing Will but Jade didn't. Even though she dumped Jeremy for that loser Will I know she deserves a great guy like Jeremy and vise versa for Jess. This is just a good book.
not one of the best.......2000-07-27
This book was not one of the best.I have read every sweet valley kids, twins, unicorns, high, senior year, and university and there was been some bad ones but this one was the worst. The whole book was about nothing, i mean nothing realy happened. You could skip this book and read the one after it and you wouldn't even know the diffrence.

Money Talks.......2001-10-09
The answer to the question posed by the title of the centerpiece essay of this collection of 19, and indeed by the book itself, is most emphatically "yes." As the author relates:
"A hospital administrator at a large transplant center once permitted me to listen in on one end of a phone call between him and a high-ranking oficial in the State Department. The government official wanted the resident of an important Middle Eastern nation admitted for a kidney transplant because he was a relative of one of the leaders of that nation. The State Department official said it was in our national interest to give this man priority for a transplant. And he was given top priority for an operation that otherwise would not have been available to him."
This fundemental unfairness in the distribution of human organs for transplants, Caplan argues, is the reason for the lack of success in luring new donors. Caplan concludes that those who play a role in the process of allocation of organs for transplant must make equity their top priority to convince the public both to support the procurement of organs on a voluntary, altruistic basis and to continue the commitment of public and private funds to pay for transplants.
The essays, issued also in paperback, are divided into six groups: (1) the nature of applied ethics; (2) ethical issues in animal and human experimantation; (3) advances in reprodection and genetics; (4) transplants and other unatural acts; (5) aging, chronic illnes, and rehabilitation: and (6) money, medicine, and morality. In addition to the transplant section, in which the title essay falls, two sections are of particular interest.
Caplan's balanced view of the controversy surrounding animal experimentation is well worth reading by any scientist engaged in animal or human experimentation.
Finally, in the section on the advances in reproduction and genetics, Caplan dicusses the impact of patents on the Human Genome Project and invokes a key concept in understanding the importance of this work. In an interview with the 'Philadelphia Inquirer' published May 1, 1994, Caplan said, "the big breakthrough was to relize that there was such a thing, even for the nazis, as ethics, ...[t]hat's a real threat to my field, because if you can justify mass murder and torture by ethics, then can't you justify anything if you think about it long enough?"
There is a time for thought, there is a time for talk, and a time for action.
Book Description
Most books on terminal illness focus on death and dying. This book is about neither. It doesn't deal with statistics or the medical aspects of a crippling disease, and it isn't written by a celebrity about their amazing recovery. This book is about a real person and a true hero. Bob Horn, an authority on the Soviet Union and foreign policy in the Third World, a successful author and teacher, an involved husband and father of three in his mid-forties, awoke one day to find his entire world upside down. Diagnosed in 1988 with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), better known as Lou Gerhig's disease, Bob had to deal with the reality that his situation was terminal. How Bob and his family coped and continue to cope or "battle" as Bob prefers to call it with disability and terminal illness is an amazing story that you will find inspiring, heartwarming, humorous, upsetting, and a celebration of the triumph of life. Having already beaten the odds that say he should have died years ago, Bob accomplished the most unbelievable feat he wrote this book. It was discovered that Bob had a pulse in his right foot that could be felt and manipulated. By hooking his foot up to a computer, Bob found he could maneuver the cursor and produce documents. He has written articles for the Los Angeles Times, sermons for his church, correspondence, and most impressive of all this book. Not bad for a man who is completely paralyzed and hasn't moved in six years!
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read!.......2006-01-12
This is an excelent book! Very inspiring and humbling. I was first introduced to this book while teaching in Japan. The author's daughter was a previous teacher at my school, so the book found it's way to me. Once I began reading it, I was hooked! Another father of a good friend of mine also has the same condition, so it really gave me a greater understanding. It is seriously one of my favorite books!
Life Changing.......1998-09-16
This book is life changing. I first met Bob through his son, my schoolmate Chris, in Malaysia, and thought he was Just another friend's dad(don't take it personally Bob, you were all like that:). After more than ten years, I arranged to visit Bob, his wife Judy, and my old school mate Chris. I was advised by Chris to read the book as a precursor to meeting Bob, so as not to "shock" me when I met him again. HOW WRONG COULD CHRIS BE!!! Bob's vitality, energy, and will to live life to it's fullest, regardless of the obstacles, should be a lesson to all so called able-bodied-people. I used to think that being put in a wheelchair would destroy my life. I now know I was wrong. Bob, you are a hero to me.
An inspirational, heartwarming book for everyone........1997-08-08
This book was impossible to put down. Mr. Horn's determination, will to live, outlook on life, and his achievements are something we all could take a lesson from. He seems so happy and vibrant you almost forget that he typed the whole book with his foot! His descriptions of his family and friends support is enough to make the happiest person in the world jealous. This book is a tribute to the human spirit and to Mr. Horn and his family
Superb book detailing what it's like to have ALS.......1997-07-25
As a person with the same disease, I found myself saying "ME too!" to all of the stories and feelings.
This book is uplifting and presents ALS as a condition that happens to our bodies but never to our minds and souls.
Final piece of advice:
Ignore the title. It's the worst part of the book.
A must read for all whose lives are touched by disability.......1997-07-21
A funny, touching and inspirational story about living one's life with a severe physical disability.Anyone whose life has been touched by either their own disability or that of a loved one will find solace and inspiration in Bob Horn's story.A mentor and friend to many, Bob Horn inspires us to push forward against the odds by his example

One of the best Young Adult Novels available.......1999-06-25
I read this book many years ago when it was first published. It still remains one of my favorite books even as an adult. Jenny truly shows the allure of how many adolescents get involved in drugs and then turns around and shows you what it can do to people. At first it seems to glorify the drug use, until Jenny soon realizes how her drug use almost destroys all that she cares about in her life! A must read!
Ask Me If I Care is a must-read for everyone.......1999-04-02
Ask Me If I Care, by H.B. Gilmour is a must-read by anyone who has ever had any experience in any way around drugs. It tells exactly what it's like being a teenager and being faced with all the dillemas that go along with it. I enjoyed it very much and give it a 5 star rating just because it is the best book I've read in a long time. Anyone who has been in those situations or knows someone personally that has been will be able to relate very well to the perfectly written feelings that Gilmour has relayed to us.
