Customer Reviews:
Good tips, but not enough depth in each category.......2007-09-29
I'm sure Linda Wells knows a lot about beauty, but this book tries to cover way too many topics and ends up not being helpful enough in each. For example, in 'eyes', she says there is a complimentry brown shade for everyone...ok...what other colors?? There is a complimentary color for each eye color, but brown eyes could wear any color that's not exactly the same as the eye color...No Pictures, No color charts, not enough info. What about hair color or skin color?? No buying guide I'm not sure whom this book is aimed at. The beginner won't have enough info, the semi-informed won't get a lot of new stuff...
I can understand the reasoning behind the low ratings.......2007-07-16
I agree with those who are disappointed -- there aren't very many novel ideas or secrets to be found within this book. I certainly can understand the frustration expressed by readers who purchased this. As a subscriber to Allure magazine, I often find their articles very helpful and interesting, but I must also admit that this book wasn't that helpful or interesting. Sorry.
great buy!.......2007-06-27
this book is wonderful i love it! it has all sorts of tips! there wasn't a page i didn't find useful! the price is well worth the goods! i love this book it can help u with every single beauty problem that u could ever imagin lol this book was also wonderfully organized and very great. linda wells has several letters intoducing the next sections and it's such a nice way to do so it's like getting advice about beauty from a firend. the tips are soo wonderful!
Great Book!.......2007-03-31
I'm not someone who reads Allure on a regular basis, in fact, I rarely read it. So this was a great book for me. I'm a 30 year old who doesn't spend a whole lot of time on myself so this was a great book to give me basic information about most every part of the body. My only complaint is that I wish it had more instructional information on applying makeup.
I really recommend this book!
Great Book.......2007-03-21
I had been searching for this book since Christmas and I hadn't been able to find it in book stores anywhere. So I finally ordered it from Amazon.com and was very pleased. The book was everything I expected and I didn't want it to end. I limited myself to only one chapter every other day because this is the type of book that you start and don't want to stop. I highly recommend this to anyone that loves how-to beauty books.

Book Description
If sex sells, what better come-on for merchants of the repressed decades of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s than the come-hither wink of a coquettish countertop mannequin? In Counter Culture, Steven Heller and Louise Fili take us on a colorful peep show of these sexy, sometimes erotic, but always fetishistic, plaster bodies and body parts. Theirs is a surreal look at how mannequins play on consumers' desires, acting as agents of seduction, beckoning us toward that ultimate act--the consumption of goods. In this entertaining book, Heller and Fili unearth the fault line between sex and shopping--between voyeurism and "just looking"--that underlies much of modern commerce.

The small-statured Counter Culture by Steven Heller and Louise Fili may too easily be missed on laden shelves, but is packed with a colorful survey of commercial culture examining how mini-mannequins and other counter displays both created art and appealed to consumer interests. Color photos of these mannequins pack the pages.

A guy's view........2007-09-13
Beautifully written, poetic and thought provoking. Though it is geared toward a woman's perspective, I connected with Jan's message and found myself longing for more of God.
This book will lead you to keep your heart open.......2004-05-17
A must read for women in their 20's, 30's or 40's. Jan calls us to keep our hearts open in the deepest diappointment. Book studies on this book are popping up in all sorts of place, at my church, within christian ministries etc...A book that finally speaks to the true heart of a woman..
touching and inspiring.......2004-01-08
I found this book rather randomly one day while I was shopping for a gift. I searched for John Elderidge's book, Wild At Heart, and bought it for a growing Christian friend. Under recommended titles, I saw The Allure of Hope by Jan Meyers. Having read Wild at Heart, I had been wanting something similar that addressed the issues faced in a woman's life rather than a man's. John Elderidge actually wrote the introduction to this book and recommended it highly. So, respecting him as an author, I bought a copy.
I absolutely loved it and I have since given away copies to friends and family alike. I felt like it was relevant to events in my life and helped me to work through some problems that I have encountered as a developing Christian. Many Christian books that address lifestyles and relationships with God seem "preachy" to me, and I have a difficult time getting into them. I also feel like they dwell too heavily on discipline and abstinance, neglecting the source of discontent that leads people astray. Jan Meyers, however, does an excellent job by speaking to the reader as a peer. Her voice sounds like that of a friend and it conveys a sense of pain that she is experiencing and working through, much like her audience. Her writing, while it may lack the eloquence and development of John Elderidge, is powerful nonetheless because of its honesty, tenderness, and warmth.
This book is an excellent read for any woman searching for a closer and purer relationship with God. I plan on using it in a Bible study I am leading later this year.
A must read for all women!.......2003-04-08
I have read many books on Christian women's issues, and this is by far the best! In contrast to most Christian books for women on the market, it's not about how much harder we women need to try, or what we're doing wrong, but it's about how much God loves us and desires intimacy with us and how important our hearts are on this journey toward Him. Her writing is visionary and mystical while remaining firmly grounded in the Christian faith. This book has awakened my heart in a powerful way. It has given me vision and helped me to relax in God's love for me. If you liked any of the John Eldredge books, this one is a must!
Finally.......2002-12-21
Finally, a book for women that doesn't pressure or cheerlead us, but speaks the language of the real woman. This book is not just for people who have gone through tragedy - it speaks to the ache in every woman. I highly recommend this book.

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder.......2007-06-22
This story is a must read for all. It proves that beauty is only skin deep and beauty and love does tame the most savage beast. I read this book in one afternoon because I couldn't put it down. Great love story with a lot of intrigue to boot. A must read for all!
Awesome Modern Day Fairy Tale.......2007-05-28
This is the first novel I've read by Mrs. King-Bey and I must admit when I first read the books description, I thought who wants to read about a guy who suffers with a bipolar disorder and a woman that's been horribly disfigured, however, I must also admit I am definitely impressed, this novel was beautifully written. In BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Deatri King-Bey brings to light a story about finding the true beauty within. This novel was so realistic and thought provoking. It had me crying and LOL at some of Bruce and Nefertiti's antics. The emotion and love that was portrayed throughout this novel between Bruce and Nefertiti was just overwhelming. Despite the 'flaws' Bruce and Nefertiti suffered, be it physical or emotional, they were able to see pass all that and open their hearts to one another to a deep and unconditional love. This novel raised awareness about the bipolar disorder, it had mystery, action, humor and definitely some HOT and steamy love scenes. A real page turner that I couldn't put down until I was finished. Definitely a novel for the hopeless romantic and those that believe in fairy tales. Thanks for a real eye-opener, Mrs. King-Bey!
My Favorite Fairytale!.......2007-05-06
I just bought this book on Tuesday and I finished it in 3 days! Nefertiti was brutally attacked and left with scars on the outside and the inside. Bruce was abandoned by his mother who called him a "devil child". Because of his "blue moods", people who knew him called him a beast. Bruce loves his beauty unconditionally and Nefertiti loves Bruce despite his problems with controlling his rage. This story was interesting because these characters had to deal with mental illness and traumatic stress.....but that just made it more interesting!!! I couldn't put down.
Kudos to the author on a book well written...
LOVE IS UNCONDITONAL.......2007-05-04
MUCH WORDS DOES NOT NEED TO BE USED TO DESCRIBE HOW GREAT BEAUTY AND THE BEAST WAS. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. IT'S A MUST READ
Not Your Classic Cast.......2007-02-21
In Deatri King-Bey's, Beauty and the Beast, we meet Bruce Maxwell and his childhood friend, Nerfertiti. Bruce suffers from bipolar disorder. Sometimes he is able to function in the world and sometimes he is not. Nefertiti, once a lively, free-spirit, becomes a recluse after a brutal attack that leaves her scarred for life. When Bruce's aunt brings Nerfertiti to Maxwell Manor to recuperate, Bruce embarks on a mission to make the only woman he has ever loved his wife. Self-doubt and fits of rage reign as Nerfertiti learns self-acceptance and Bruce tries to control the rage that presses him to seek revenge against Nerfertiti's attackers.
In this classic tale of beauty and the beast, the reader meets two not so classic characters. Although Bruce and Nefertiti are seriously flawed, their acceptance of each other is a life's lesson in love. Ms. King-Bey weaves a wonderful tale of unconditional love and forces the reader to remember that beauty is not skin deep but contained deep within the skin.
If you are a romance fan, Beauty and the Beast will surely not disappoint.

Book Description
On the 100th birthday of Horn & Hardart, a look back at one of America’s most beloved institutions
A coin-operated glass-and-chrome wonder, Horn & Hardart’s Automats revolutionized the way Americans ate when they opened up in Philadelphia and New York in the early twentieth century. In a country where the industrial revolution had just taken hold, eating at a restaurant with self-serving vending machines rather than waitresses and Art Deco architecture instead of stuffy dining rooms was an unforgettable experience. The Automat served freshly made food for the price of a few coins, and no one made a better cup of coffee. By the peak of its popularity—from the Great Depression to the post-war years—the Automat was more than an inexpensive place to buy a good meal; it was a culinary treasure, a technical marvel, and an emblem of the times.
The Automat will take readers back to the days of Charles Lindbergh and Babe Ruth, Walter Winchell and Jack Benny, the Brooklyn Dodgers and shows at Radio City. Through beautiful archival photography, candid interviews, delicious recipes, and wonderfully evocative memorabilia, Lorraine Diehl and Marianne Hardart bring to life a time when a handful of nickels and the twist of a wrist bought a good square meal—Macaroni and Cheese, Boston Baked Beans, Chicken Pot Pie, Rice Pudding, and all the other favorites whose recipes are in these pages.
The Automat was a true American treasure, and here is its tribute.
“I have always thought that the Automat in New York has the best scrambled eggs in the world.” —Gregory Peck
“To have your own stack of nickels placed in your tiny hands; to be able to choose your own food, richly on display like museum pieces; to make quick and final decisions at the age of eight; this was a lesson in financial dealings that not even two years at the Wharton School could buy today.” —Neil Simon
“Oh, be still my heart! I used to shine shoes when I was fourteen years old. And when I was a little ahead, I would stop at Horn & Hardart.” —Tony Curtis
“I lived at the Automat. They had the greatest chocolate milk. When I moved to Philadelphia, I apportioned less than two dollars a day to eat on, and the Automat was the only place I could do it.” —Dick Clark
“I went to the Automat all the time. I grew up going to the Automat. The food was delicious. And it was wonderful.” —Woody Allen
“The first time I came to New York, I had a meal at the Automat. I had heard about the Automat, and I had to go see what it was all about.” —Leonard Nimoy
“I had the same lunch every day: three vegetables, a roll, and cocoa. All for twenty-five cents.” —Jerome Robbins
Customer Reviews:
I consider it a cook book.......2007-04-16
Even if you have no interest in the history of the automat whatsoever, the recipes for American comfort food classics contained within are mostly great, and those that aren't are easily modified to taste. Everything is easy to prepare in large batches and it all keeps extremely well in the fridge, so you can cook yourself silly on the weekend and have leftovers throughout the week. Cheaper, better tasting, and healthier than any fast food you're likely to find. It's a darn shame these places went the way of the dodo, but if the economy keeps on crumbling maybe we'll get them back.
Wonderful History of Memories.......2007-04-02
Lots of good memories of the Automats that I visited during my youth. Detailed history with lots of pictures.. Well worth being featured on the coffee table!
Nice book.......2006-09-01
Just what I was looking for. A new Automat opened up in NYC about two weeks after I received the book. Will have to try it out.
The Automat.......2006-03-02
It is easy to be happy with this book. It brings memories of my life in Philadelphia. Especially knowing I was stationed at the firehouse at 10th and Cheery Sts, We were first in to the bakery and warehouse of Horn and Hardart. We went there several times a year for sprinkler alarms. While reading I could taste my favorite Hot Apple Pie with Vanilla sauce. Yum Yum
The Automat: The History, Recipes, and Allure of Horn & Hardart's Masterpiece.......2005-09-12
I have only the fondest memories of Saturday lunches with my Mom at the Automat; Marianne Hardart brought these memories back to life for me. Her book is a wonderful testimonial to two men whose concept on how to feed and treat their customers is worthy of "rebirth" today. It is a "must read." An added bonus is getting the recipes for some of my childhood favorites.

Werewolves - a new look?.......2007-09-08
Oh, Boy! What a superb collection starting with LA Banks' Heat right through to Natalie Dunbar's Out of the Dark. I just had to order this book, being a dedicated reader and addicted fan of LA Banks' Vampire Huntress books, and after hearing a lot of good reports from other readers. I was not disappointed in any way and the fact that the individual stories were connected (through both characters and the central location) added rather than detracted from my reading enjoyment. This does not feel as if you are reading four short stories by four different authors, yes you will notice a change in the writing but the continuity is there and you feel as if you are reading a single work of fiction. An excellent read that I would be happy to recommend to anyone who likes supernatural/romance reading material.
Enlightening Anthology.......2007-01-02
I am a HUGE L.A. Banks fan (VHL Series) & selected the book based on the premise that it was going to be enjoyable. It did not disappoint. The four stories although they stood alone did have recurring characters that first appeared in L.A.'s story, which is the first story. The only story that seemed to need more information was the last one. I would love to see a book series based on all of these characters..perhaps each one discussing the lives of the main characters within the author's stories.
3 out of 4 ain't bad.......2006-11-11
As a huge fan of L.A. Banks' VHL series, and having enjoyed her werewolf story from Dark Dreams II, I was looking forward to her story. And I have enjoyed the J.M. Jeffries stories I've read before. However I don't think I've ever read anything by Seressia Glass or Natalie Dunbar before. As for the stories, I liked them all, but had some reservations about the last one. They all took place revolving around the hotel and the Temple wolf clan, but the 4th story involved a cousin or something and just seemed a little off from the other stories. The way they are connected, I guess I expected the last story to be about Malcolm, the future clan leader of the Temple clan. In L.A. Banks' story, it seems she alluded to Malcolm having a mate, but the others made it seem like he didn't. That was a little confusing. But I loved the premise and the set up has the potential for a continuing series given the size of the clans. They just have to work on the consistancies more. Overall, an enjoyable group of stories. And quite a few steamy parts. Without a doubt L.A. Bank's story would be my favorite, but I admit to being biased. I would recomend reading the book. Give it a try.
Werewolves on the Strip.......2006-11-10
The next time you take a stroll along the Vegas Strip, you might want to look closely at who passes you by. If they seem extra hairy, have extra long canine teeth or send shivers through you, you might be looking at a werewolf. By day, they are as normal as you and I, but on a full moon night or in the midst of a brawl they can shift into a dangerous and scary creature. The four female authors of this anthology provide a story surrounding the French Quarter Hotel and Casino big poker tournament in this novel, Vegas Bites.
L.A. Banks, known for her vampire series mixes werewolves and vampires in her story, Heat. Bounty hunter, Butch Maverick, returns to Vegas to investigate rumblings that someone was out to rob the hotel and steal the tournament booty. Butch has to solicit the help of Laurel, the hotel's security boss. Butch and Laurel have a past they thought they were over, but with a full moon and her being in heat, they can not resist the temptation to mate again and perhaps rekindle their relationship. Together they fight off a rogue werewolf band to save the hotel's fortune.
J.M. Jeffries picks up the story as she introduces more members of the Warwick family in her story, The Hunger Within. An Omega werewolf, Solange Warwick is contemplating leaving the family when her parents retire and move from Vegas to Alaska. With her omega status, she needs the protection of her parents. The another rogue werewolf is after the Warwick family fortune and Special Agent Jarred Maitland is on hand to stave off the burglary. In the midst of his work, he falls hard for the beautiful Solange, and helps her move up in the ranks of the Warwick family.
Seressia Glass wrote my favorite story in the anthology, Double Down. Simone is the entertainer director of the French Quarter Hotel and Casino. She has booked magician Kadim for the hotel and now the Mystery Channel wants to do an expose on him. But, Kadim is not cooperating. He is a private person and refuses to be shown on film. Simone decides to take matters in her own hands and heads to his hideaway home; what she does not know is that it is all for her. Kadim is full of secrets. He can shift into a werewolf, but is not a werewolf. He is in love with Simone and his biggest secrets can keeps him enslaved to an unwanted master. Can Kadim and Simone find love?
In Natalie Dunbar's story, Out of the Dark, the werewolves are on a rampage in a small town outside of Vegas. They have killed many of the town's residents, but after viciously attacking Kellie Monroe they allow her to live, but the doctor almost kills her when she has a violent reaction to the vaccine to prevent her from becoming a werewolf. Her case intrigues Preternatural Police officer Garen Roy. He has two mysteries to solve. Why was Kellie not killed and if she is not a werewolf, then what is she.
This book offers a little for both the romance and sci-fi reader. For the romance reader, this anthology provides four romantic stories between male and females. For the reader who enjoys sci-fi, they will like the ideal of werewolves working and living as humans until they are attacked. I say if you are looking for a little something different in your usual boy meets girl romance, then this might be the book for you..

(RAW Rating: 4.5) - What you see is not what you get!.......2006-10-29
VEGAS BITES is an eclectic mix of werewolves 'Weres',
vampires 'Vamps', 'Humans', and 'Others'. The action is sequestered
within four separate stories surrounding the French Quarter Hotel
and Casino, in Las Vegas. It is owned by 'Weres' who are hosting a
twenty million dollar tournament.
HEAT by Leslie Esdaile: The owners of the French Quarter are
retiring and a rival 'Were' pack is positioning themselves for a
hostile takeover. Police officer Butch Maverick is in Vegas to
help Laurel, the casino's chief of security, abort the takeover.
Laurel and Butch have a tangled history; she is the only 'Were' to
ever tame the wolf in him, but he messed up. Laurel wants to keep
things between them strictly business. But when Butch steps through
the casino doors, he can smell Laurel's perfume and he feels the
heat.
THE HUNGER WITHIN by J.M. Jeffries: Solange Warwick, the personal
assistant for the casino's owners, was adopted by them after she was
bitten, over a century ago. Because of her unrequited love for
their son she plans to leave the casino. She is further stressed
when she learns that the casino will be robbed, and also when she
meets Jared, an undercover FBI agent working for the enemy. Jared
is 'Human' and therefore off limits. First they must save the casino
and then Solange must decide what a century old werewolf can do with a
thirty something human?
DOUBLE DOWN by Seressia Glass: Simone Masters, daughter to the
casino owners, has the distinction of being born a werewolf and as
such has additional powers. Another 'Were' was killed and Simone
feels responsible, so it has been five years since she has run the
plains as a wolf. As head of entertainment, she tries to compensate
by booking superb acts for the casino. The current act, a human
magician, has been asked to be a guest on The Mystery Channel. This
would bring major publicity to the casino; but he refuses. Simone's
attempts to get to the bottom of his refusal, reveals he is
not 'Human'. The revelation could be the death or quite possilby the
life of her.
OUT OF THE DARK by Natalie Dunbar: Kellie Monroe, home to bury her
grandmother, is attacked and bitten by a 'Were'. Kellie's DNA is
more than human, and an antidote to prevent her from being turned
almost kills her. Attempts to kidnap her puts her in the custody of
Garen Roy, who is working with the Las Vegas Preternatural Police.
Kellie learns her grandmother was not 'Were', 'Vamp', or 'Human'.
But there is an amulet her grandmother left to her, which holds the
key to all of the mystery, gives Kellie a power she could never have
imagined, and offers hope to a smitten Garen Roy.
Hot, tantalizing, out-of-this world describes this collaboration of
nocturnal musings. VEGAS BITES will leave you wondering and watching,
especially the eyes of people you meet. Kudos to the authors for
taking readers to the outer-limits in a well told and highly erotic
way.

Beautiful and informative.......2007-01-09
I bought this book for Cgristmas for my boyfriend who used to be an avid surfer. The photography is gorgeous. This book was passed around all Christmas morning.
More than just eye candy..........2006-07-06
My son, who's been surfing for 20+ years, was glued to this book when I showed him my library copy. He actually went through it cover to cover at one sitting. It explains the physics of waves in a way that non-surfing types can understand and shows the shapes of waves peculiar to certain sites that he instantly recognized -> lots of things for us to talk about. So, now I have my own copy and am getting one for him. The photographs are exquisite and give me ideas for the stained glass I make. I think it's a great book to give a surfer or surfer parent and it's great to put the beauty of waves on the coffee table, too.
Book Description
An exploration of mankind's fascination with worlds beyond our ownby the bestselling author of The Physics of Star Trek
Lawrence Krauss an international leader in physics and cosmologyexamines our long and ardent romance with parallel universes, veiled dimensions, and regions of being that may extend tantalizingly beyond the limits of our perception. Krauss examines popular culture's current embrace (and frequent misunderstanding) of such topics as black holes, life in other dimensions, strings, and some of the more extraordinary new theories that propose the existence of vast extra dimensions alongside our own. BACKCOVER: An astonishing and brilliantly written work of popular science.
Science a GoGo
A brilliant, thrilling book . . . You'll have so much fun reading that you'll hardly notice you're getting a primer on contemporary physics and cosmology.

The prehistory of and rise -- and perhaps fall -- of string theory.......2007-04-23
According to Ed Witten of Princeton's Advanced Institute (former home to BOTH Albert Einstein AND Kurt Godel), modern string theory is a piece of 21st century science that fell early into the 20th century.
According to string apologist Brian Greene, sring theory succeeds where Einstein himself failed...in uniting nature's fundamental forces to form a complete explanation of reality itself...our "Elegant Universe."
According, however, to a growing cadre of notable physicists however string theory is not even wrong by virtue of its untestability but fails to explain some astrological phenomenon and in fact retards the actions of those who would.
Krauss has been rightly praised for this book which attempts to put the modern fascination with string theory into a proper historical context. The idea that explanation of scientific phenomenon can made by recourse to higher dimensions is not new. Perched at the beginning of western thought in the Greek philosophy of Socrates/Plato, Krauss recounts "Socrates" story of the cave.
In the story of the cave, "Socrates" as related by Plato wonders what would happen to prisoners in a cave, illuminated from behind, whose only contact with each other was through their shadows. The speculation was that they would come to regard their shadows as their essences. The further speculation was that maybe we -- in looking at our manifestations of each other -- perhaps do much the same thing.
More contemporarily, Krauss talks about the nineteenth century fascination with the 4th dimension. As explained in the H.G. Wells book "Time Machine" the fouth dimension would be a means by which individuals could enter and exit seemingly locked rooms.
As recounted by Krauss, the religous considered it the purview of God. And some scientists considered it the purview of a possible explanation of reality. As fads come and go in popular culture, however, Krauss tells how this science fad fell under the excitement of new discovery.
In discussing the spectre of contemporary string theory, Krauss suggests that we may see yet the same phenomenon occur yet again. In so doing, Krauss' point is well taken.
It is perhaps the most characterizing element of science that its theories rely upon testably provable phenomenon.
Masterful Explanation of a Complex Subject to General Readers.......2007-02-20
Lawrence M. Krauss has steered a course perfectly between the Scylla of scaring the general reader off with massive amounts of math and the Charybdis of dumbing down his subject. It's not an easy book to read, but then it's not exactly an easy subject. He has a good time, but not to excess, with some of the sillier New Age and PoMo attempts at appropriating physics for one or another version of the newer superstition, but the main thrust of the book is his attempt to convey to us general readers what's going on in particle physics, insofar as this is accessible to those of us who stopped struggling somewhere in the neighborhood of differential equations.
This is, of course, a quixotic project, rather like trying to explain serious music to the profoundly deaf. It can be done, to some extent, but it's not easy to do. It's not even easy to try. I can't imagine that the tangible rewards are at all commensurate with the effort required, and Viking Press didn't really hold up their end, in my opinion. The book appears to have been neither copy edited nor proofread. VP, like not a few other publishers, has figured out that few readers demand their money back just because the book is riddled with errors. Apparently their professional ethic is simply "They can't kiss us on the mouth."
Krauss deserves better with this book, but then so do all the writers who publish books intended to inform and even, in the best sense, educate the public. Krauss knows he can't make me understand the math, but he's done the best job I can imagine of getting the ideas across without it. At every stage of the exposition, his honesty and integrity shine through; he gets it across without ever kidding (or flattering) the reader.
I intend to look up everything else of his that might be accessible. If you are interested in what's going on in modern physics but aren't an expert, check out this book. You'll be glad you did.
a guide through the pitfalls of science careers..........2006-12-30
If you pay close attention, then you can hear Lawrence Krauss cautioning you to beware of taking science as a religion. Krauss explains his own immunity to falling victim to this affliction by way of having been caught in the crossfire between the two insititutions of science and religion.
I applaud his insistence on taking the physical evidence as evidence of itself only while resisting the allure of the reported enthrallling beauty of the equations and precision in physical theory.
If the lesson comes across that it is possible to be a scientist without out being a secular religionist, then that can be realistic encouragement to future potential scientists.
Well done, sir!
A superficial view of a multi-dimensional world.......2006-10-26
After reading Brian Green's "The Elegant Universe", I wanted to learn more on the possibility of a world made of more than 4 dimensions, time included. L. Krauss seemed to offer the opportunity not only to learn more about these extra dimensions based on scientific knowledge but also to melt it with an insightful adventure into the history of human creativity which has already imagined such world. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. Both the scientific and artistic parts are poor and shallow, a shame when the explanation of a multidimension world is at stake. The rhetoric has nothing of the passion and the doors-opening of Brian Green's book. Too bad.
Krauss is a physicist of many dimensions.......2006-09-01
Lawrence Krauss has a particular knack for taking the reader through a wonderful journey of discovery through science, and Hiding in the Mirror does just that. His scholarly approach is both witty and colloquial, profoundly informative without being preachy. The book begins with a lively introduction to modern-day cosmology, relativity and quantum physics, the quest for the grand unifying theory and a presentation and critique of a potential candidate: string theory. His critique is timely and well presented, and never without the humor and readability which marks Lawrence Krauss as one of the greatest science writers today. This is Krauss' best work, and an absolute joy to read.

It's hard to think of a physical or psychological problem that this book does not address--and from two or three different directions. Whether the solution to a health concern lies in a cup of herbal tea, a dose of traditional Chinese medicine, a massage, a visualization exercise, or a combination of all four, Letha Hadady extends a wise, helpful hand and walks us through her vast store of alternative-medicine knowledge.
Hadady, an herbalist, acupuncturist, and author of Asian Health Secrets, bases her healing treatments on the theory that there's an original and positive you that the right therapies can uncover. She says that the illness, injury, or just lack of joy that's keeping your original self under wraps can be overcome with the use of herbs, homeopathic remedies, Eastern (Chinese, Japanese) medicine, massage, and visualization techniques. Blending different approaches to healing is her strategy--she often combines a dose of homeopathic medicine with herbs and Eastern medicine to forge the most effective cure.
Personal Renewal provides solutions to problems ranging from the mundane to the spiritual. Is carpal tunnel syndrome a problem for you? Try the regimen in chapter 6, "Computer-Related Stress and Pain." Feeling angry and exhausted while going through a tough personal time, like a divorce? Skip to chapter 16, "Heal Your Broken Heart." Class reunion coming up? Treat yourself to an herbal facelift using the recipes and techniques laid out in "Defy the Law of Gravity."
Each chapter opens with a statement of the goals to be met and a list of the materials you will need. (One caveat: certain ingredients in the medicines that Hadady recommends may strike some as over the top--like the silver, gold, or processed coal, i.e., bitumen, supplements.) Recipes, a glossary of herbal terms with pronunciation guidelines (especially helpful for the Chinese terms), and a directory of suppliers for the rarer products round out this clearly written, inspiring handbook to uncovering the original you. --Stefanie Durbin

Wonderful Fabulous.......2002-11-09
I would first recommend that you read her first book Asian Health Secrets. It is a different way of thinking but from my first hand experience - very healing. I also think that you should know that winghopfung.com has a weekly letter by Letha and has alot of the herbal products available that are mentioned in the book.
One of the best!.......2000-12-31
I read Asian Health Secrets, and then couldn't wait for her next book to come out--and I was not disappointed. This book dispells all the myths about the "normal" way to age, and instead, shows you a whole new way of looking at yourself. And if you need proof that these methods work, try it and see how you feel. And then take a look at how great Letha Hadady looks. She looks about 25 years old.
Must have.......2000-06-27

It is true to say that toys reflect their times. Indeed, the development of great warships and ocean liners from the late 19th into the 20th century is shown through Dick Claus's collection of toy ships.
