Book Description

She came to the Highlands an innocent bride, but one man's love and two nations' enmity would make her a woman....

In her unforgettable novel Kilgannon, Kathleen Givens brought to vivid life the tempestuous romance of Mary Lowell, an English aristocrat, and the Scottish chieftain Alex MacGannon, who claimed her as his bride. Swept into a world of ancient customs, fierce passions, and political treachery, she never expected her life to take root in the Highlands, that she'd become... The Wild Rose of Kilgannon.

Now Mary and Alex's love story continues. As the fires of war engulf Castle Kilgannon, beautiful Mary stands fast, protecting her family and home. But when news comes of the capture of her beloved Alex, Mary vows to rescue her brave husband, who offered his life to save his men. As a defiant Alex is tried in London as a traitor, Mary unleashes her own campaign on London society, determined to win justice on the most dangerous battlefield of all. Even as Alex remains imprisoned in the Tower, she seeks his passionate embrace, forbidden and unforgettable, risking everything to free the rugged freedom fighter who has claimed her, body and soul . . .

Don't miss the first novel in the breathtaking MacGannon Family Saga, Kilgannon, available from Dell.

5 out of 5 stars The Wild Rose of Kilgannon.......2007-08-10

This is another excellent historical adventure written by Kathleen Givens. If you are like me and "love a story", the "Kilgannon Series" should be put on the top of your list.

4 out of 5 stars Drama and Trauma Continue.......2007-07-16

The sequel to Kilgannon, Wild Rose of Kilgannon picks up almost precisely where its predecessor left off. Alex Macgannon, Earl of Kilgannon, has been seized by the English after the failure of the Jacobite uprising, and his wife Mary is left at home trying to hold his family and clan together. Once it is determined that Alex will face trial and probable execution, Mary takes matters into her own hands and follows him, first to Edinburgh and then back to her native London, doing all she can to free him from his captors. Aided in her quest by Alex's loyal kinsmen and clan and her own aristocratic family, Mary must continually face the very real probability that her husband's life will be forfeit and that she will be left alone and destitute with his children.

This is a worthy sequel to the first book, and the action does put one in mind of the Outlander series. There is much trauma involved and Mary and her family are not always infallible. It is easy to believe that events might have played out this way for those Scottish lairds who joined in the uprising. Again, Givens glosses over any sexual scenes, leaving all to our imaginations, which actually creates a deeper emotional bond between the characters.

A few nitpicky things bothered me, however. First, that Mary finds herself pregnant after one night with Alex, and after several previous miscarriages, has little to no difficulty carrying the baby, despite the major stress she is under, did not seem plausible to me. Second, the author chose to continually have the characters cry "I love ye, lass," and "And I you, my love" until I wished they'd find some other way to express themselves. Minor irritations, to be sure, but some tighter editing might have made this good novel into an even better one. A fine entry into the historical romance category and one that will have you staying up to find out just how Mary and Alex are going to find their happily-ever-after.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-03-06

Yes, agreed, read Kilgannon first.
I am mesmorized by this time period and this land, Scotland, that is.
I am interested to see if Givens takes on for #3. She certainly left it open to the possibility.

3 out of 5 stars Much better than the first.......2004-08-24

I was very disappointed after reading Kilgannon and questioned whether or not to even read this book. After completing it I am glad that I did. This second book in the series was much better written than the first and definitely more interesting. I think that Kilgannon and The Wild Rose of Kilgannon should have been made into one book instead of two. I think that people would have been more receptive to the story had it been complete given that Kilgannon was more like an introduction and not an entire story.

5 out of 5 stars As good as KilGannon.......2003-05-28

The love story of Alex and Mary continues...Alex MacGannon prefers not to fight in the upcoming war between the English and his fellow Scotsmen. However, his friends, the MacKinnon and the MacDonald, persuaded Alex into join James Stewart's cause. Alex leaves behind his beloved Mary Rose and his two sons from a previous marriage to fight for Scotland's freedom. However, Alex finds the Scottish leadership lacking in both courage and tactics. He stayed with his fellow Scotsmen even when James Stewart flees to France (Coward!!)and leave them to fret for themselves. Alex refuses to go home in spite of missing his family and his home greatly. He wants to be sure that all his people return home safely and in doing so, he is forced to surrender to the English, who imprison him in the Tower. Though English, Mary risks her own safety by travelling to London to save the man she loves. This is an amazing sequel of the KilGannon and Alex is an amazing hero, who understands loyalty as he insures his men safely return to their homes. And Mary, who gave up everything to go to Scotland with Alex, is more than willing to give up even more for her beloved's freedom. This is a must read for you Scottish Romance readers out there!! But as I finished the last page, it does make me wonder if there will be another book after The Wild Rose of KilGannon.....Wouldn't it be great? ;) I hope so...

5 out of 5 stars She's outdone herself!!!! What a tale!!!!.......2004-07-06

Lori Wick has done it again with her deep and romantic tale of Jackie Fontaine and Clay Taggart. Jackie took a little getting used to, but who couldn't but instantly fall in love with Clay? This book also helped me learn a great lesson: if you have faith, the Lord will provide for you. And if you have faith, you will find eternal happiness and love with someone wonderful. Huzzah for Lori Wick and her amazing characters!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Blind love.......2003-12-16

this is one of the best books I've read. Clayton Taggart was such a romantic guy, never giving up on the one he loves. Jackie Fontaine was one tough girl. she alomost gave up but love kept her going. this is a really great book and really suggest it if you are into romance and the love of God.

1 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book!.......2003-05-21

One of the best books that I have ever read! A definite page turner. There was so much that happened and so many suprises. One of Lori Wick's best! I recommend this to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Great Christian Romance!.......2002-12-03

This is my first book, but definitely not my last, of Lori Wick's that I have read. How adorable and beautiful this novel is. A valuable lesson in this is to be learned and that is that we can make it through any struggle we have with the Lord's help and ONLY with the Lord's help. How beautiful and marvelous this novel is. I gave it 4-stars because I had a difficult time staying awake at several points throughout the book. But, great read overall.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Read (Almost 4 Stars).......2002-05-31

This book is definitely one of my favorite Lori Wick books. It seems to be "deeper" than the rest. It is the story of the Fontaine family and Clayton Taggart, set in the 1870's in Colorado. "Where The Wild Rose Blooms" focuses on the romance between Clayton and Jackie, one of the Fontaine girls. I particularly liked the characters in this book. They were certainly not perfect (especially Jackie) and seemed much more believable in their flaws than some of Lori's other characters. Because of the "believability" and development of her characters, we really enjoyed the romance a lot more and felt very rewarded when it happened-even though we knew it was coming. This is a nice, fun, and sometimes thought-provoking read that you'll enjoy.

Christians who have longed for a more readable literal Bible translation will find much to praise in the English Standard Version. The ESV's translation team of over 100 members has admirably attempted to preserve the stylistic variety of biblical authorship and ease of reading (at the eighth-grade level) despite the word-for-word translation, which historically has resulted in a choppier text flow. Bible study aficionados will appreciate the short introductions to each book, an extensive center column cross-reference system, full-color maps, and a 14,500-entry concordance. The hardcover edition includes the basic Bible frills: a presentation page, as well as marriage, birth, and death registries. There are some luxurious touches as well. The free, prepackaged CD-ROM has the ESV text, KJV Bible for comparative study and use with Strong's Concordance, Nave's Topical Bible, the Crossway Classic Bible Commentary, and others. These extra bonuses are a good incentive to take the English Standard Version for a test drive. --Cindy Crosby

5 out of 5 stars Great Bible if you need a small one........2007-10-06

I used this to read a verse at a wedding in France. I, of course, did not want to carry a large Bible from the USA to France. It was the perfect size. Although, a little small in print but I knew that going in. It worked perfectly and everyone was pleased. I then gave it to the bride and groom as part of their wedding present.

4 out of 5 stars A nice handy ESV bible.......2007-10-05

As for the translation, it's the best in accuracy and readability better than NIV and NASB. I bought this so that I can carry it around in my pocket. It's the perfect size to take it with you for a walk and devotion. The letters are quite small so it's not for long studies. A handsome little Bible for...highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, concise Bible!.......2007-09-28

I purchased this ESV Bible because I wanted something small and portable, as well as a good, practical, readable translation. This print is excellent, the font is clear and not too small. The leather cover being soft gives the book an elasticity while not being too floppy. I have truly enjoyed my first few weeks of using this Bible and recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars ESV Weathered Metal Bible.......2007-09-07

This is a handy bible to toss in my bag that I carry to work, the library, etc. Being in the Army National Guard, I appreciate the rugged, durable cover and the look of it. It's a decent translation, basically a conservative evangelical modernization of the revised standard version. I would recommend this bible to friends.

3 out of 5 stars The Only Flaw is the Tiny Print.......2007-09-06

It's good to see the ESV gaining traction in the market. This is a beautifully bound compact Bible, with excellent reference notes and a remarkably complete concordance. Small enough to fit into a typical ladies purse, it's a convenient size to take on the train or bus. But the print is extremely small and takes some getting used to. It's a shame the publisher didn't make the Bible even slightly larger; I think it would have been a runaway best seller. As it stands, I can only give it 3 stars...the print is just too small.

Book Description

Forget the myth of the sweet Irish colleen. Real Irish women were no cream-puff debs. From the ancient warrior queens Marrigan, Macha, and Badbh to the labor-movement maven Mother Jones, Irish women have backbones of steel. Wild Irish Roses is a fascinating look at wild Irish women throughout history; serious information imparted in Trina Robbins' trademark style, with verve and humor.

The women in Wild Irish Roses are not always nice girls or even good girls, but they are women who know how to get things done, whether on the battlefield or in the bedroom. These are women who preserved and handed down the old stories. They are women who fought in revolutions with either gun or pen, wrote books, starred in books others wrote, and stormed heaven itself.

Author Trina Robbins is an impeccable researcher whose knack for telling stories and embellishing them with engaging illustrations and photos, brings each of these wild Irish roses to life, including:

• Maeve and six other warrior queens

• Grania and Deirdre, who ran away from kings for the love of younger men

• Five women who turned themselves into birds to get the job done right

• Saint Brigit and the saintly Kathleen O'Shea

• Cultural revivalist Maude Gonne and friends

• Irish-American beauty roses, including Scarlett O'Hara

• And warriors in their own right, such as Mother Jones and company

Wild Irish Roses is a celebration of tough, independent, beautiful Irish women from myth to modernity. It's a book that is sure to entertain, inform, and inspire readers of every background to find the Irish rose in themselves—to discover what they want and have the courage to go out and get it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The power of Irish women.......2006-12-17

I read this book after having loved Ms. Robbins's 'Eternally Bad: Goddesses with Attitude,' and was not disappointed. She's now one of my favorite feminist writers, and has such a fresh hip writing style, combining the academic side of things with modern language making these tales relevant for the modern reader. As she makes clear many times throughout the book, Irish women have never exactly been shrinking violets. They knew what they want and they took it, even if it meant starting a colossal war, double-crossing a relative, selling one's soul, having to go to prison, or disfiguring oneself. According to legend, the first people to land on Irish soil were a queen and her 50 female subjects. It didn't stop there, what with plenty of feisty empowered (and not always very nice or "ladylike") goddesses, such as Maeve and the Morrigan. Women were so revered by the ancient Irish, in fact, that when Claudius Caesar came to Ireland, the people thought that Empress Agrippina was the real ruler and paid no attention to Claudius at first. Irish women also fought alongside the men, until the British outlawed female fighters in the year 697. The status of women and these legendary goddesses was so strong, in fact, that many of them were turned into saints when the Christian missionaries were converting the Emerald Isle. (I was delighted to find out that my own favorite saint, Dymphna [a real historical person and not a goddess], is also Ms. Robbins's favorite Irish saint!) And to top it all off, Irish women were among the original Lucy Stoners, keeping their names after marriage until sometime in the 19th century. You wouldn't find any women identified as Mrs. Husband's Full Name in Irish history, that's for sure!

The book goes forward in chronological order, starting with the Irish goddesses such as Maeve, Macha, and Aoife (EE-fa), and other women of ancient mythology and legend, such as Deirdre, Fand, and Grania. (I was a bit disappointed by how my own favorite Irish goddesses, Flidais and Nemetona, were left out.) It then moves onto Brigit, the most prominent example of a beloved goddess transmogrified into a saint by the early Church, and revered folk figures such as Countess Kathleen O'Shea and Biddy Early, the Witch of Clare. (It really speaks volumes about just how revered Irish women still were by how only about four women were burnt at the stake in Ireland during the Burning Times, as opposed to the hysterical fear of "witchcraft" and the women suspected of being "witches" back in Continental Europe. Most of Ireland would have been excommunicated or burnt at the stake by the Continental Church's standards!) Then we get the tales of legendary pirate queens and the bawdy entertainer Lola Montez, and finally more modern women, some of whom led the reawakening in Irish culture and nationalism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fighting for freedom from the oppressive British rule, and some who fought the good fight in America. This final section includes women such as Margaret Sanger, Mother Jones (the classic "I'm not a feminist, but..."), Maud Gonne, Countess Markievicz, Lady Wilde, aka Speranza (mother of Oscar Wilde), and the fictional character Scarlett O'Hara. All in all, the stories of these truly amazing women should make anyone feel deep pride in being Irish, and make those of us who aren't Irish wish we were, or at least partly Irish. A lot of people seem to wish they were Irish already, or to take great pride in being even .0000000001% Irish on their four-greats-grandmother's side, but Irish pride and national literacy should be about knowing these ancient myths and the stories of these inspiring modern-day heroes, not drinking green beer on St. Patrick's Day or naming one's child some ridiculous pseudo-Irish name like Azzlyn (for real). (And speaking of names, I really would have appreciated some sort of pronunciation guide, even though Ms. Robbins said she used the most simplified spellings wherever possible. Let's be honest--most non-Irish folks have no idea how to pronounce names like Badb, Aedh, Cimbaoth, Skathach, or Bodb without pronunciation instructions.)

Overall, this book is a fun read and hard to put down, and highly recommended for all those interested in Irish history in general and Irish women in particular.

3 out of 5 stars A bit simplistic.......2006-05-18

While I loved the tales that were told in this book, I wasn't crazy about the way the author told them. Her language is a bit simplistic and in today's vernacular. Comes across as a bit odd when telling ancient legends. But good to maybe read to kids to tell them about their heritage.

4 out of 5 stars Ireland's most famous mothers, sisters & daughters.......2005-07-14

Long before the Equal Rights Amendment was even a twinkle in anyone's eye, Irish women were asserting their place in the world -- sometimes with a well-placed word, and sometimes with a well-aimed sword.

Trina Robbins provides a delightful, educational look at some of Ireland's most famous mothers, sisters and daughters in "Wild Irish Roses." Subtitled "Tales of Brigits, Kathleens & Warrior Queens," the book is packed with stories about women dating back to the far reaches of legend and as fresh as the early 20th century. Whether lusty or greedy, passionate or political, scholarly or savage, these are women with a positive, independent outlook on the world around them.

Robbins saves the tales from being dry biographies and historical anecdotes by injecting a modern woman's perspective into the prose. The dialogue she employs in her stories sounds modern, not ancient; for instance, when the goddess Macha implores her husband, Crunden, not to go to the Ulster fair, he whines, "All the other guys are going. If I don't go, they'll say I'm henpecked." (He goes anyway; bad things happen.)

Other featured characters of legend include Queen Maeve, whose desire for a powerful bull led Connaught into bloody conflict with Ulster; Skathach of Skye, the mighty warrior who trained the hero Cuchulain in the arts of war and love; Deirdre, who defied the high king of Ulster, Conor Mac Nessa, and ran off with the studly fighter Naoise; Grania, who similarly fled the wedding bed of aging warrior Finn Mac Cool with young lover Dermot; and many more.

Although the Christian church took a dim view of uppity women in later years, the coming of Christianity to Ireland didn't diminish the Irish women's strength and independence, as later chapters show. Take for example Kathleen O'Shea, who reportedly sold her soul to the devil to save the people under her care, or the Meath princess Dervorgilla, whose preference for one man over another led to England's invasion of Ireland. (OK, that turned out badly for the Irish.) The Clare witch Biddy Early defied church laws to help people as a mystical healer and seer, while Grania O'Malley, who made her home on Clare Island, grew to be Ireland's fiercest pirate queen.

There's also the goddess Brigit, whom the church made into a saint to help with its conversions, and Eliza Gilbert, who fooled the world into believing she was the Spanish beauty Lola Montez. By the 19th century, Lady Jane Wilde (Oscar's mom) was writing columns fomenting rebellion, and Lady Isabella Gregory was resurrecting Ireland's mythic past and Maud Gonne was inspiring Yeats to greater literary heights (while thrice spurning his more familiar urges). In 1916, Countess Constance Markievicz, who grew up in Sligo and married a Polish count, fought in the Easter Rising, while across the ocean, Irish Americans like Mother Jones, Elizabeth Flynn and Margaret Sanger redefined the boundaries of equal rights.

And there are more. Robbins has compiled an enoyable collection of Irish history, lore and mini-biographies to delight those with an interest in Ireland's past as well as the bold strides women have made to seize their place in the world.

5 out of 5 stars A Legend of Its Own.......2005-02-08

The title "Wild Irish Roses" is an exquisite way of
saying"Read Me" and this book doesn't stop there.

The introductory illustrations by the late Nell Brinkley
grace the book as if it were an extension of Trina
Robbins's book:" Nell Brinkley and the Early 20th
Century Woman."

Simultaneously,"Wild Irish Roses" has a stunning and
exciting similarity to Trina Robbins's book
"Eternally Bad : Goddesses With Bad Attitudes" almost
like another extension ,however, set in Ireland.

This book,no matter what similarities may grace it with
with their uniqueness,is more than capable of standing
on its own with its' uniquess and quality.

Through legends, myths, history, and folklore there is
never a dull moment.In fact,there's never a moment when
you willingly want to put the down!

It is so intricately put together with obvious research
and gifted writing I became a part of the book.

I would give it more than 5 stars if I could!

5 out of 5 stars Good for older modern roses.......2006-11-05

This is an excellent book for those gardeners wanting information on many of the older hybrid teas and floribundas plus climbers that are carried by only specialized rose nurseries. This book also tells it like it is and so you get the negative aspects of some roses. Yes the book is VERY large but perfect to raise a small child to the table.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Rose Book.......2005-10-10

This is such a lovely book, it's worth owning just to look at the beautiful photographs of roses. However, it offers much more. There are full descriptions of each rose, including origin, developer, growth, fragrance, etc. I needed to find a rose developed in Germany. Using this book I created quite a long list of potential roses. When I located a grower of the rose I wanted, it was interesting to see this book prominently displayed among his reference works. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Best Coffee Table Rose Book.......2004-09-19

This is the first Rose Book in my collection; it is responsible for my interest in roses. It is the biggest book of my rose book collection; in height, thickness or weight. Its production qualities are high and more than a decade after purchasing it, it is a book I still hold dear.

Over 1500 roses are presented, and for each there is a photo. The writing is clear and concise. And more than any other reference, we hear the writer's voice. When Macoboy particularly likes a rose, we know it. If he were writing a scientific reference, this may not be quite appropriate, but this personal voice brings us a step closer to viewing the roses as he does. And this draws us in.

A few bits of crucial information are listed in tabular form, the rose's breeder, its class, and how fragrant the rose is. Entries are listed alphabetically in three main sections: Species Roses, Miniature Roses, All other roses.

The book was published just after the commercial success of Austin's first remontant English roses and a handful of these roses are included.

But almost twenty years after its first release (the edition I write about was printed in the late 1980's), the book is beginning to look and feel dated. There has been a huge amount of work in the area of minis and this section seems quite dated. A significant portion of the Hybrid Tea roses and floribundas are not in commerce - not even at specialty nurseries. And many of the most popular of these classes do not appear. To make matters worse, a noticable portion of the roses Macoboy treasures were distributed only in Australia, so European and American gardeners never would have had a crack at them.

The photos are a mixed bag. On one hand almost every rose about which he writes is photographed. This is a monumental achievement. Few rose books come so close to complete photographic coverage as this one, and any that acheive full photographic coverage are less encyclopedic in scope and/ or present smaller photos. This may be the most photographically generous rose book in print.

Most of the rose photos are pretty good. Many are excellent. And some of the excellent ones fill a whole large page. The layout is large and the feeling it creates is lush and luxurious. But a few of the photos are seriously flawed. One photo, for instance, is of a rose that is waving back and forth madly in the wind and all we can see about the rose is that the flower is reddish - the whole photo is a big smudge. And there are a few cases in which we have serious questions about color reproduction.

So who should buy such a book? Well, if you are a rose-lover and wish to draw someone else into the field, this may be the best book to do it. The lavish illustration and infectious writing will do the trick better than just about any other book. And if you are a rose-lover and you want a coffee table book on roses, this may be the best choice. Or, if you know someone who is a little interested in gardening but knows nothing of roses and is afraid to take the plunge, this would be a good introductory gift.

If you just want a reference, get Botanica's Roses it is more up-to-date and it presents more roses. And visit RoseFile.com for other info on roses and to get help finding more books about roses at Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars detailed, classic book.......2003-06-06

I love this book. I have been wanting to buy it for 2 years now and finally found it on amazon.com for much cheaper. At some stores this book goes for $100!

I love it because it is HISTORIC and GOOD FOR GARDENERS! I like how the author talks about the rose in a mythical and realistic point of view. He gives history and information for scientists.

I have never loved a book as much as I love this one. I treasure it. I am never going to let go of it. I especially love the front cover. The roses are all huddled together in different colors, and they almost appear as if they are people. The photography is magic!

Simply said, if you love romantic style books with also some useful information about gardening this the one for you.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best book available!.......2002-07-03

I'm sorry but this book just didn't do it for me! It is too large and heavy, not to mention expensive. The photgraphs aren't as clear as other books (namely Botanica's Roses)and it doesn't included many of the most popular roses.

Yes, it does describe each rose, if fragrant, how often it blooms and any known diseases, but then so do other books!

My advice is to buy Botanica's Roses. It is paperback, much smaller and lightweight (ideal for taking to the nursery).
So save the [price] and get the better book!

This Bible and font size of the print was very small. It would have helped to have a better desription. The cover was very nice-- a pink leather with design!

4 out of 5 stars The color is deceiving.........2006-11-07

I am very happy with the quality and convienance of this Bible, but a fair warning about "Wild Rose"--- this equals HOT PINK. I was under the impression it would be more of a red color, but it is very pink. For some people that's great, just not my cup of tea. Otherwise, I would definetly recommend this Bible!!

4 out of 5 stars Compact and savvy.......2006-06-30

I think that this bible is great, it's compact, and savvy. It's nicely finished with a ribbon place-mark, has the words of Christ in red typing, and is small enough to carry in your handbag, though the font is quite small.

Book Description

A town scorned them both. Could faith and love bring them together?

All her life, Geneva Patterson had known what it was to be an outcast in Haven's End, a little town on the harsh Maine seacoast. Plain, awkward, thought to be unmarriageable, she endured the cruel taunts of the townspeople in solitude. But then she encountered a man who made her dream that there could be something more for her. . .

Caleb Phelps, too, was an outcast. Once a respected sea captain, he'd been accused of a shameful crime. He still held his head high, but pain shone in his eyes. And Geneva, believing in his innocence, longed to help this proud, unyielding man find redemption in the town's view--and in his own--through God's grace and a woman's love. . .

5 out of 5 stars A Review of Wild Rose.......2007-07-28

Ruth Axtell Morren has written a tender Cinderella story - Wild Rose. In this historical, Geneva Patterson is scorned by the members of her small fishing village, Haven's End, rather than the members of her family. What family? She has none.

After the death of her father, Geneva is left alone to fend for herself. Her mother had passed away years before, and there are no siblings. Geneva lives her life as she sees fit, doing the best she can and ignoring the loneliness.

Only one bright light appears on Geneva's horizon, Captain Caleb Phelps. He comes to her rescue when a group of village boys pick on her as she is tying to sell her fruits and vegetables. His kindness touches her and is branded in her memory.

Almost a year later, Captain Phelps returns to Haven's End to live. He has fled from Boston where his name is running through the gossip mill. Even his father has succumbed to the rumors.

In a rough sort of way, Geneva and Caleb form a friendship. She offers advice and assistance in growing his garden, and he returns her help by loaning his muscles for her heavy work and treating her as an equal.

As you read, Wild Rose, you will be drawn into the story and the characters. You'll cheer Geneva and Caleb along their journeys to freedom, joy, spiritual enlightenment, and love.

5 out of 5 stars Hard-to-put-down historical romance.......2007-07-17

Morren is an excellent storyteller. Wild Rose will keep you turning pages until the satisfying end.

Geneva Patterson--"Salt Fish Ginny" to the townspeople of Haven's End--has only herself and her faithful dog Jake to rely on. Ever since her father's death, she has taken care of herself by selling vegetables from her garden and fishing. Dressed like a man in overalls and hat, she hopes to avoid those who would compromise her.

A careless prank by some youngsters while on the pier, throws Geneva in the path of Captain Caleb Phelps, heir to the Phelps shipping empire headquartered in Boston. Caleb is enamored by his fiance, Arabella Harding, and barely notices Geneva, though he offers her kindness by helping her when no one else would.

After Caleb is suspected of a crime against his father's company, Arabella leaves him for another. He returns to Haven's End, hoping to hide out until the scandal blows over and he's more sure of his future. Little does he know that there is just as much gossip in Haven's End as he left behind in Boston--or that his nearest neighbor is the girl he rescued on the pier so long ago.

A friendship is born when Geneva helps Caleb with his garden. It grows into something more when Caleb discovers the delicate wild rose hiding beneath men's overalls. But will his past overshadow the tentative hope for a future with Geneva? Will Geneva's social standing and rough upbringing keep her from a relationship with Caleb? Can she learn to trust the God that Caleb and his friend Mrs. Bradford have told her about?

Morren's excellent use of internal monologue, dialogue and setting draws the reader straight into Haven's End and doesn't let go until the very end. The conflict between hero and heroine is poignant and well handled. Both characters struggle to overcome their past, and Morren uses these struggles to paint a picture of the God who wants to draw them near.

Armchair Interviews says: If you love historical romance, you won't be able to put this novel down. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A winner.......2007-06-26

Social outcast Geneva Patterson lives a solitary existence...and she likes that just fine. Until, that is, a disgraced Captain Caleb Phelps moves into her small village and turns everything she's ever know inside out. The classic premise of a woman transformed from diamond-in-the-rough to belle of the ball through an unlikely match is made completely new in Morren's novel. You'll fall in love with the book and want to read it a second and third time. I had a hard time letting the characters go at the novel's conclusion. Morren has quickly shot up to the top of my favorite authors list--something that has not happened in a very long time. A must-read!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Well-written. .......2007-02-28

When I'm in the right mood, I enjoy reading Christian romances. I like Contemporary novels, but if I am given the opportunity to combine my love of history with my love of reading, well that's even better. I came across this book in my local public library and thought it sounded interesting from the back cover. I wasn't familiar with this author, but I'm always open to reading new authors. This book pulls you into the story by the end of the first chapter. I like that the heroine is insecure and in hiding at the beginning. I loved watching her blossom and gain self-confidence as the book progressed. This is a thoroughly enjoyable love story and also a believable one. The characters in this story come alive and you find yourself caring about what happens to them. This book deals with some difficult topics with sensitivity and yet in a way that is realistic. That is a very difficult combination to find in Christian books. I would highly recommend this book to others.

I definitely plan to check out other books by this author in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive and uplifting.......2007-02-09

When I first picked up this book, I was unsure of how to accept it, considering this is the author's first novel. After reading a few chapters, my concerns were the writing style not being one that I'm used to, the characters not being your typical Christian romantic leads, and the setting not being one that you read of very often. But I was pleasantly surprised - this book was beautifully and carefully written. The relationship between the hero and heroine is built constantly, but gradually. It's not "love at first sight," it's a growth, which to me is much more realistic and all the more endearing. To add to my high esteem for this book, the Christian conversions for both characters was not rushed or preachy, it was penned perfectly. I even teared up a time or two, and I am not a crier, especially not for books. But this was a beautiful story that I will be buying soon so that I can enjoy it over and over again. Morren's books are hard to come by in my area, but I am looking forward to reading her other books if they are anything like Wild Rose.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide to Edible Plantlife!.......2000-06-27

"The Flavors of Home" is a highly readable and well-illustrated account of the variety and richness of edible plants in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before reading it, I could never have imagined that an urban realm of some 6 million people would house such a rich supply of edibles (and a surprising abundance in our own backyards!)

Ms. Roos-Collins thoughtfully informs you of the types and usages of local plantlife, provides recipes, and warns you where danger lurks. The hand-drawn illustrations by Rose Craig are excellent.

I highly recommend this wonderful resource to anyone wanting to know more about the variety and seasonal availability of edible foliage in the Bay Area.

Book Description

For sheer bravado and style, no woman in the North or South rivaled the Civil War heroine Rose O’Neale Greenhow. Fearless spy for the Confederacy, glittering Washington hostess, legendary beauty and lover, Rose Greenhow risked everything for the cause she valued more than life itself. In this superb portrait, biographer Ann Blackman tells the surprising true story of a unique woman in history.

“I am a Southern woman, born with revolutionary blood in my veins,” Rose once declared–and that fiery spirit would plunge her into the center of power and the thick of adventure. Born into a slave-holding family, Rose moved to Washington, D.C., as a young woman and soon established herself as one of the capital’s most charming and influential socialites, an intimate of John C. Calhoun, James Buchanan, and Dolley Madison.

She married well, bore eight children and buried five, and, at the height of the Gold Rush, accompanied her husband Robert Greenhow to San Francisco. Widowed after Robert died in a tragic accident, Rose became notorious in Washington for her daring–and numerous–love affairs.

But with the outbreak of the Civil War, everything changed. Overnight, Rose Greenhow, fashionable hostess, become Rose Greenhow, intrepid spy. As Blackman reveals, deadly accurate intelligence that Rose supplied to General Pierre G. T. Beauregard written in a fascinating code (the code duplicated in the background on the jacket of this book). Her message to Beauregard turned the tide in the first Battle of Bull Run, and was a brilliant piece of spycraft that eventually led to her arrest by Allan Pinkerton and imprisonment with her young daughter.

Indomitable, Rose regained her freedom and, as the war reached a crisis, journeyed to Europe to plead the Confederate cause at the royal courts of England and France.
Drawing on newly discovered diaries and a rich trove of contemporary accounts, Blackman has fashioned a thrilling, intimate narrative that reads like a novel. Wild Rose is an unforgettable rendering of an astonishing woman, a book that will stand with the finest Civil War biographies.

3 out of 5 stars Sexy, audacious, determined, But a Spy Nonetheless........2005-09-12

Rose O'Neal Greenhow was "the" Civil War spy. This is a true story of her exploits before and during the Civil War.

In 1857, Rose was described by a jealous Northern woman as "she looked fity or seventy." That's me sometimes. She was on trial in San Francisco where her husband, Robert, was a lawyer. She might have passed for thirty-five. She was asked "How old are you?" She answered with dignified finality -- "Of sufficient age to testify." She was the Ethel Rosenberg of the Civil War on the Southern side, of course.

Her Oriental Hotel on Market Street was a noted gathering place for the Southerners. Among the generals she met there were Johnston of Shiloh fame, Sherman, Scott and McDowell. Some of their graves at at Shiloh in southwest Tennessee. There in San Francisco, there were polka cotillions and the Southerners lived akin to the way they did in Washington, D.C. She made trips back and forth, carrying messages, and became known as a Confederate spy.

Seven years later, in 1864, she looked years younger in looks as she sailed on the 'Condor' from England to the Confederate States. Rose had often said she would glady die for the Confederacy, and she was drown in the ship wreck during a storm.

In Washington, she had been the fashionable hostess to the likes of John C. Calhoun, James Buchanan, and Dolley Madison. She and Robert went to California during the height of the Gold Rush. After his death in a tragic accident, she became notorious for her many love affairs in Washington. D.C.

With the Civil War, things changed rapidly for, overnight Rose became an intrepid spy. She supplied accurate intelligence against the Union forces, written in code, to General Beauregard, reportedly one of her lovers. She made the difference in the outcome of Bull Run with her information, but Allan Pinkerton arrested her as a spy. Indomitable Rose journeyed to Europe during the crisis of the war to plead the Confederate 'cause' to the royal courts of England and France.

No woman in the North or South rivaled this Civil War heroine, who risked everything for the cause she valued more than life itself. She declared, "I am a Southern woman, born with revolutionary blood in my veins (she meant Rebel tendencies)."

This biography is about an astonishing woman, a book which will stand with the finest of Civil War true stories. Wild (Rebel) Rose was one to deal with only if you were a Confederate sympathizer. Ann Blackman wrote THE SPY NEXT DOOR: ROBERT PHILIP HANSSEN and SEASONS OF HER LIFE (about Madeleine Albright). She was a news reporter with 'Time' magazine and the Associated Press covering American politics and social policy.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Addition to Civil War Literature.......2005-08-17

This is a delightful book, and in many ways:

1. It describes the life of a wonderfully interesting lady who didn't stay just home and make babies.

2. It gives a picture of Washington D.C. as it existed at the time of the Civil War. This picture is in two parts:
a. the physical aspects, the filth, smell, and how life was lived, and
b. the way Washington worked then (and now) power, money and sex.

3. It is based on new information -- her diary, originally thought to have been written in code, but in fact just very poor penmanship.

The story starts with a message sent to Gen. P.G.T Beauregard to give him an week's notice of when the Union Army would attack Manassas (Bull Run). He used this information to order reinforcements that enabled him to defeat the yankees. Through the course of the war Rose would be caught, imprisoned (without habeas corpus to even know the charges against her). She was exiled to the South, where she was sent by President Davis to France and England to try to get them to assist the South.

This is a fascinating book. All the more so because it is true. Rose was a character born long before her time.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Rose.......2005-08-16

Wild Rose with its great research by the author adds a rarely publized subject to the many civil war books and should go down as one of the most interesting. The research is fabulous and is used to paint a picture of the times thru the eyes of a politically active "idealist" leading to spying, prison, and eventually - her DEATH. For civil war history buffs(such as me) it has great qualilty and for those not into history, it is a story that could be repeated many times in the future.
