reference, user friendly.......2007-05-17
One of the first spinning books I purchased, easy to use, indexed well, spiral bound and small enough to take along in my knitting/ spinning supplies.
A reference book I am always picking up to read; pest controls, hand carding, different spinning methods, washing yarn. Also a good bibliography for further reading.
Indispensable!.......2006-09-07
I'm a brand new spinner, and this book has helped me immensely. It has helped me to better understand the parts of the wheel and what they do, how to draft, how to troubleshoot problems such as the yarn not winding onto the bobbin or overtwisting. It has a wealth of information about all aspects of spinning, from start to finish, in a concise and useful format. The way the book is constructed so you can stand it up and refer to it while spinning is also a big plus. Highly recommended!
Right On.......2006-02-25
Great little book to chuck in with the traveling wheel/spindle gives the pertinent information with reasonable pictures easy to use, easy to pack has become a constant companion. Coil bound with heavy card pages lays flat even outdoors.
a good book for those just starting their library.......2002-03-01
If you've just learned to spin, this book will enhance your library. It is very clear and complete. It explains all those terms that get thrown around.... Grist, twist, ratio... This book will help you keep it all straight.
Don't Spin Without It.......2001-12-11
I had enough money to buy one book and picked this one over the Amos Big Book of Handspinning. Its compact size is perfect for keeping in my workbasket, it is also a perfect size for "going on the road." The information is clearly presented and valuable. And...it lacks the demeaning comments of the Amos book, for those spinners that use double tredle.

Easy read with many useful hints.......2007-08-15
If you're into spinner fishing, this book has many helpful suggestions and is an easy read.
Jed Davis's book is well organized and follows a logical pattern that makes his suggestion easy to understand and follow.
Best of all, I think Jed's book improved my fishing.
Great Book!.......2007-06-01
This book was everything I expected and more. Not only did it offer specific tips every season of steelheading, but offered valuable tips on making your own spinners as well. I'd highly recommend this book to anybody wanting advanced knowledge of fishing and spinners.
An outstanding description of a highly effective method.......1998-11-13
If you thought you understood steelhead fishing before reading this book, you are in for a big surprise. Davis not only explains the theory of how and why steelhead act the way they do, but he clearly and efficiently puts it to practical use by showing anglers exactly what spinners to fish in all conditions and how to fish them. As he points out in the opening chapter, nothing is left out or glossed over. He goes into excruciating detail on everything. But don't, for a minute, think this will bore you. You will be on the edge of your seat as he tears apart conventional beliefs and introduces you to whole new way of looking at things. For example, most trout and salmon anglers think that steelhead become lethargic in cold water and must be angled for with tiny baits. Well, here comes Jed Davis with a silver-plated #5 spinner in 32 degree water. I must say that I laughed my head off at first. Like how did this thing ever get published? Surely, this man had to be a lunatic. But I tried the technique in upstate New York and at my parents house near Bellingham, Washington. I hate to say this but his system works. Most guys keep this type of thing a secret. Not Davis. This is more like true confessions of an expert steelheader. Regardless of the method you fish, this book will give you tremendous practical insight. Definitely one of the best fishing books I ever read.
Excellent all around guide for fishing steelhead, esp in NW.......1997-10-05
More than just a book on lure selection and presentation, Jed Davis describes how optimal lure size and color differs according to water temp, sunlight and water color. Viewing spinners as 'attractors' makes spinner fishermen much closer to fly fishermen than they might otherwise think.
Davis' love of fishing -- bordering on the obsessional -- permeates the book and makes it more entertaining to read than most how-to books are. (It also raises the question "What does this guy do for a living?" He fishes only weekdays, and you have to sell a lot of spinners to pay the rent.)
As a new steelhead fisherman, I read and re-read the book to good effect. It took a couple of readings before I gleaned two key points. First, this technique works best on smaller rivers and streams. Second, being the first angler of the day to present an 'attractor' (i.e. spinner) in a size which almost (but not quite) spooks the fish is the best way to catch steelhead. There are a certain percentage of 'aggressive' (read 'dumb') fish in the river on any given day and Jed Davis' goal is to present his spinner to as many of these fish as possible. Using the author's techniques works, particularly if you sight fish and are prepared to cover a lot of water. Reminds me (somewhat) of the Teeny method of fly fishing for steelies: put it in front of their noses and slam'em!

Book Description
Every night, Shahrazad begins a story. And every morning, the Sultan lets her live another day -- providing the story is interesting enough to capture his attention. After almost one thousand nights, Shahrazad is running out of tales. And that is how Marjan's story begins....
It falls to Marjan to help Shahrazad find new stories -- ones the Sultan has never heard before. To do that, the girl is forced to undertake a dangerous and forbidden mission: sneak from the harem and travel the city, pulling tales from strangers and bringing them back to Shahrazad. But as she searches the city, a wonderful thing happens. From a quiet spinner of tales, Marjan suddenly becomes the center of a more surprising story than she ever could have imagined.

If you are familiar with "The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night", you may not enjoy this book..........2006-09-19
"Shadow Spinner" by Susan Fletcher is a touching tale of courageous women, a sultan, his sins, and his reign. When the Sultan's first wife betrays him, he vows to kill each and every woman in the kingdom. So, on a dangerous killing spree, the Sultan marries a woman one day, and kills the bride the next. What are the women going to do? Some leave the kingdom in fear with the help of an outlaw name Abu Muslem... but one brave woman, Shahrazad, steps up to the plate and comes up with a clever plan. On the night after marrying the Sultan, Shahrazad tells a story to her little sister, Dunyazad, as the Sultan listens in. She stopped at a cliffhanger, and the Sultan, wanting to listen to the rest of the exciting tale, lets her live another day. By doing this every night, she saves the women of the kingdom and soon she becomes an inspiration to not only the country, but also a crippled young woman named Marjan. One time, while Marjan was with her Aunt to sell some jewelry to the women of the castle, she told a story to a group of children. When Dunyazad overhears, she brings Marjan to Shahrazad, so Marjan can help her find new stories. But when Marjan can only remember the beginning of an old tale, she must do something strictly forbidden- go outside the castle to see if she can find the old storyteller she heard tell the tale long ago. Will she succeed or will she fail Shahrazad and the women of the kingdom?
My favorite character was Marjan- she really spoke to me. The message she had to share was wonderful and everyone needs to take it to heart. Although I cannot share it here without giving away ending, I would recommend this beautifully written tale of overcoming obstacles in life- but only to a few people. Even though the author creates a wide range of characters and kept me wrapped up in its blanket of words until the last sentence of the Author's Note, I feel either you would love or hate this book. It requires an open mind, a love for stories, and knowledge of Indian customs. Having an Indian friend, I do have knowledge of some basic traditions so I could keep up... but after reading some other reviews, I realized that some people didn't and had a harder time with reading it. Others either Indian born or had a better knowledge of the stories this book was based on ("The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night") hated it for its bad representation of it. Really, this is for a few select people in a group all to their own. I, being one of them, enjoyed this book, but you may not. Approach this with caution. I would recommend it for seventh graders up.
Great read!.......2006-05-04
This book was both spell-binding and educational. I read it to my 11 and 12 year old daughters. They could read it themselves, but I enjoyed it too. It has a mature theme, but it is handled well. It also has a subtle wisdom that is neither preachy nor heavy handed. Love is the greatest of virtues. Mercy is near the top, and hatred should be overcome.
Above Average.......2006-04-03
This book was okay. It kept my interest most of the time, but I didn't like the ending too much. It was exciting at times, and it was interesting how Shahrazad loved the sultan. Kind of weird though.
what the heck????.......2006-02-19
Don't waste your time on this book, there are more valuable ones out there. First of all, what has she DONE to the fabulous story of Shahrazad? Practically torn it apart and sewed it back together with very rough stitches. I read this book trying to get away from the stereotype some writers have of typical "weak" women (I am partial to strong heroines with wit) and therefore thought another retelling of Shahrazad would be just the thing.
Well, it turned out I was wrong and this book just had the stereotype I was looking to get away from.
If you want a strong heroine, if you've been disappointed by this book and how it portrays Shahrazad, go read Cameron Dokey's version (called "The Storyteller's Daughter). In all, that is a much more satisfying read.
Marjan.......2005-06-19
The story is good, a young crippled girl sneaking out of the harem to help Shaharazad, a brave queen telling tales to keep her and many other women alive. The characters are good, Marjan is a brave girl willing to risk her life for the hero that she admires, the queen that tells tales. The language is good. The words are written fluently and the reader is able to read it once without going over one sentence over and over again. The book is good! It is able to capture your attention with the very first few lines of her Auntie Chava's constant nagging. From reading the first sentence, I couldn't put it down. I stayed up late wanting to find out what happened to the crippled girl that helped the queen.
Susan Fletcher paints the settings with her words and is accurate to the last detail about women during Marjan's time and how they lived their lives. This book is perhaps one of the few GOOD fiction books written in this world.
Book Description
Learn how to cast, retrieve, and how to strike, play, and land trout on spinning equipment. The excitement comes across as Deitrich describes "watching any fish follow the spinner from the deep water of his hole, twenty-five feet away, all the way to your feet, where he takes the spinner just before it leaves the water." THE how-to book on fishing for trout with spinners shows you how to find and take trout in all four seasons and all weather conditions and what to look for and how much to spend on rods, reels, spinners, and line.
Customer Reviews:
Rank beginners only.......2005-12-13
This book is for rank beginners. The techniques discussed are not innovative and precious little is explained as to what size, weights, and blade shapes are most productive for particular stream structures and depths. I've seen too many beginning fishermen using an inappropriate spinner type and get frustrated easily. More types should be illustrated.
The equipment section is not very helpful, specific rod and reel models would be more appropriate even for beginners. Too many times, beginners buy junk tackle and expect it to handle decent sized trout, it won't. The fish of a lifetime could strike your spinner on the next cast, be prepared for it and don't be disappointed.
Spin Casting Brilliantly is better written and much more helpful.
Are You A Beginning Fisherman (fisherperson)?.......2005-01-14
I have been fishing since I was a young'un but never for trout. Since I recently moved to the mountains, I bought this book along with a fly fishing book to get some insight on trout fishing. For my purposes, I was disappointed in "Spin Fishing for Trout". I think this would be a good book for someone just starting out fishing but if you have been fishing for any time at all, I would use the money to buy a few spinners instead.
A Spinner Fisherman.......2004-07-25
I'm a spinner fisherman, too. This book is right on. I use a lot of the techniques described in the book and I know they work. I catch several hundred trout every spring using nothing but spinners.
Repeated posts.......2004-07-11
Some guy Wrote 3 phony reviews so i am making 3 bad reviews to counter act it. I have this book. Dont get it.
Unbelievable!!!.......2004-01-08
I didn't know the half of what I was missing until I read this book! You have to believe me! You think you know how to catch trout? Yea, so did I, until I read this book! It was extremely eye opening!
I can't wait until I am able to unleash the full power of this technique even more this spring. I expect my yearly total to at least double if not triple!
I never endorse these types of things. I never use feedback, comments, etc... I just had to this time for my fellow fisherman. Guys, you got to trust me. I fish all over the conutry, and haven't seen anything like this.
See for yourself! Good luck, and great fishing! See you in the stream!

Book Description
When she arrived in Iraq in May 2004 as the most junior member of the Washington Post bureau staff, Jackie Spinner entered a war zone where traditional reporting had become impossible. Bombs were a daily occurrence and kidnapping an ever-present threat for American journalists. Yet "the longer I stayed, the more Iraq felt like my home," she writes.
Tell Them I Didn't Cry is Jackie's vivid and intensely personal story of being a journalist in Iraq -- where for nine months she covered the war from its center in Baghdad, Fallujah, Kurdistan, and Abu Ghraib -- and of being transformed, eventually, from a rookie correspondent into a seasoned foreign reporter.
As she grew accustomed to the realities of living and reporting in Iraq, Jackie found that there was as much to love as there was to fear. The frenetic and grueling pace was an exhilarating challenge, and she discovered a powerful sense of purpose in delivering the story of Iraq. Soon, the Iraqi translators, drivers, and bodyguards that the Post staff relied on to be their eyes and ears, and, more important, to keep them safe, became not only her colleagues, but also her close friends and tightly knit family. Still, security rapidly deteriorated and Jackie describes with chilling simplicity narrowly surviving a kidnapping attempt and writing her name and blood type on her flak jacket before covering the battle in Fallujah.
By turns lighthearted, grave, vulnerable, and fiery, Jackie recounts the difficulties of being a woman in a country where women are marginalized and a journalist where the press are no longer safe. She eloquently chronicles what occurred behind her headlines as she struggled to preserve her sanity, and sometimes her life, while also doing the one job in which she had found true meaning.
Jackie's account is punctuated by brief vignettes written by her identical twin sister, Jenny, who watched as Jackie was drawn further and further into a world increasingly fraught with danger. Every morning she looked for Jackie's byline in the Post, knowing only then that her sister had survived another day.
Through it all -- the violence and fear as well as the moments of humor, camaraderie, and warmth -- Jackie Spinner brings home with brilliant intensity and candor what it is like to report on a war under exceptional circumstances.

Unique perspective covering Iraq.......2007-03-23
Jackie Spinner's absorbing account of her Iraq wartime coverage is a courageous story, not just in the obvious sense of exposing herself to danger, but in exposing the vulnerabilities of herself, her family, and friends. The Iraqi staff and Washington Post colleagues became her family, drawing her closer than even her twin sister back in the states. This refreshing honesty is rare in a journalistic account of a war. She avoids the temptation to give canned histories of the region and plunges into the daily grind of finding news on the streets and homes of an ancient country torn apart.
A good look at the war and the people.......2007-01-03
This one is a good read. It was hard to put it down. Spinner does a good job in talking about the people of Iraq, those whom she worked closely with in the Post bureau. It was interesting to see how she grew a relationship, sometimes obviously close.
Iraq Page Turner.......2006-12-31
This is a great read. This gives you the personal view of an American journalist in Iraq - you see the pathos, the terrible results of war, the friendships, the fear, the drive and risks of journalists, the love. And you may lose sleep over this book, since it is very hard to put down - until you have devoured every page!
Great read!.......2006-10-13
"Tell Them I Didn't Cry" is a great book, and well worth the read. Although Jennifer Spinner gets a co-author credit, the vast majority of the book is her twin sister Jackie's story of her 10 months as a foreign correspondent in Iraq.
This is not an in-depth analysis of the Iraq war. Rather, it is a deeply personal account of Jackie's growth from junior reporter for the Washington Post to acting bureau chief in Iraq, while dodging bombs, mortars and kidnappers. Jackie tells an unbiased story, pointing out the good and bad of Iraq, "calling them as she sees them." The book is full of interesting stories, including a poignant account of her Christmas in Baghdad, part of which was spent looking for a church safe enough to attend for mass.
Although I am slightly biased (like Jackie, I am an alumnus of Southern Illinois University) I think this is a great read.
Tell it like it is, girlfriend!.......2006-07-11
When I married my husband, a reporter, I told him I'd follow him anywhere his career took him, as long as he promised never to be the kind of reporter who went into war zones to cover battles. He agreed, and we got married, and thankfully, he's never gone back on that promise. So, it was with some trepidation that I picked up Spinner's book, which had been recommended to me by a friend of mine -- do I really want to read about a reporter doing exactly what I've always worried my husband might want to do someday? But boy, am I glad I did. This is a wonderfully written and extremely personable book, detailing Spinner's ten month experience as a reporter covering the Iraq war for the Washington Post. And I don't know if it's the woman's eye, or what, but more than anything else I've read about Iraq, this is the book that really gave the whole thing some life for me, turning numbers into people, and bringing home some of the enormous problems people on all sides are facing right now in that messed up country.
Highly recommended to anybody who is interested in A) journalism, B) current events, or C) understanding what the hell is going on in Iraq. And then after that, highly recommended to the rest of you. Read this book!

A great source for the one (or two) bunny family!.......1999-01-14
This is a book for those that don't want to have a rabbitry. It is designed for the person who wishes to raise just one rabbit as a pet and as a wool source. Comprehesive and well written, it includes sections on how to grade, harvest and use your fiber.
Excellent resource book for every aspect of angora rabbits........1998-11-23
This book is absolutely outstanding for the serious spinner and for those who raise angora rabbits for their wool. There is much information I was unable to find anywhere else.

I checked this out of the library 5 times before I finally bought it. It's very informative for anyone interested in raising and spinning the four breeds of angora rabbit.

Portuguese Spinner, Is The Best book That I've Ever Read!.......2001-04-04
The Portugues Spinner, was the best book that I've ever read and it took me, only a few days to read it and I've never read this fast before { I just couldn't put the book down ]! My ancestors came from Sao Miquel and Sao Jorge, Acores and lived in New Bedford, Mass. I was born in New Bedford and this book brought back so many memories of living there and I still remember lots of those places. I went to Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church and School! The pictures were Great and it was wonderful reading about your own town like that. I also worked at the factory that was mentioned in the book when I was only 16 yrs.old. I will pass this book along to my children so, they can enjoy it too! Thank you so much! Sincerely, Mrs. Olivia Rosa Silva Strittmatter Tucson, Arizona
A major accomplishment.......1999-07-03
As an immigrant from St. Michael, Azores, who was raised in the south end of New Bedford, Massachusetts, one might think I had little to gain from a book describing my "roots," but quite the opposite was true. Every morning I read a few pages with my coffee and almost every morning I found myself teary-eyed and nostalgic. My emotional reaction to the book came from feelings of compassion, pride and a deep understanding that was stirred by the stories, cases, and historical background so beautifully captured by the writers and editors. The photography is wonderful as well. I've now purchased three copies of this book and expect to still buy more. I want to share it with family and friends and don't want to give up my copy so I'll keep buying them as gifts. My sister, who still lives in Portugal, said that if this book were translated into Portuguese, it would be well-received in Europe and Brazil. I know my parents, who are non-English speakers, would enjoy it thoroughly if it were translated. Meanwhile, I shall treasure it both as a remarkable example of documentation of the immigrant experience and as a personal reminder of my heritage. Non-Portuguese friends of mine have also found it fascinating and a valuable contribution to an often ignored aspect of American history. Many kudos (and much gratitude) to the editors and publishers for a major accomplishment.
