Product Description
Deep thinking and sensitive, Jenna feels an urgent need to fix her family and save the world. What unfolds is a ten year search for life's instructions. Guided by her extrasensory perception, intuition and imagination, this quirky school kid takes cues from the universe throughout the whole dramatic decade. See if you can find the subtle instructions on life that unfold all the way to the startling end. Chock-full of suspense, bizarre circumstances and divine directives, Help Is On Its Way only guarantees one thing: You will never think about life the same way again. A True Story. Edited by Emmy Award winner Molly McKitterick. _____ Book Excerpt (age seven) "There's something about the idea of having broken music and a knocked out light in the doorway of my house that says emergency to me. It calls for screaming sirens. I want ten deafening alarms to fill the air of my neighborhood, red lights flashing all the way to my house. A pageant of nurses in white will carry me out on a great big stretcher, shocking my parents into silence. They will finally realize that I am exactly as crushed as the broken lamp, and as silenced as the music lying scattered and sharp on our living room floor." _____ Book Excerpt (age eleven) "'Did you know that some flowers hate to be flowers?' Frank says, pointing to my small bouquet of wild violets, kneeling on one knee to get closer to my level. 'Can ya believe that?' He looks at me with wide eyed disbelief. It makes me laugh. 'Yes! They hate it!' He exclaims with gusto. 'They get impatient. They wanna bloom and they wanna bloom now.' 'Their mistake is,' he says, tapping the flower head, 'that they think they can only bloom when the conditions are just right. So they wait until the sun is high and long in the day. And then they get ta despise the weeds, tryin' ta claim the sun as their own. 'These flowers never bloom because they're wasting their energy waiting for sustenance, competing, hoping, wishing and praying for fertile loam, ya know, moist ground where there ain't none. 'But lemme tell you a secret. Some flowers can bloom without good soil or water or even much sun. They can be all up in a mass of weeds, looking strangled, and they can still bloom big and full and fragrant. Ya know why?' 'Why?' There's nothing in the universe I want to know more. 'Because they believe they can.'" _____ Book Excerpt (age fourteen) 'Mom says we kids have to try harder, do better, be more. And just so we don't forget, she's made some reminders, handwritten messages in blue ink on torn squares of lined paper, scotch taped on select places around the house. 'Do not leave this cupboard door open or George will bump his head' 'This TV remote control is for George only.' 'Do not throw away George's car magazines.' 'Keep porch light on for George.' 'Keep Coke cold in fridge for George.' I read the messages day in and day out, wondering why my Mom and George can't just say out loud what they need to say and then be done with it. And of course I also wonder how my life would be different if my name were on those reminders rather than George's. As the year rolls on, Mom's messages make their way beyond the painted kitchen cupboards, the felt covered furniture, and the aging electronics toward the bathroom tile, and down the hallway wall. The peculiar pieces of paper creep closer and closer to me, Toni and Grandma's bedrooms, telling, telling, telling us, hey you have to keep on top of another one of George's needs. George's needs. George's needs. My room is the only place I can escape the messages, so I spend more and more time here, under the covers, safely sandwiched in my bed. I want to come out of my room, but first I have to feel good about doing it. When I'm alone in my room, I think about how passing time might make you look older on the outside, but it can't guarantee any change on the inside. Just like crossed bridges don't necessarily get you anywhere if they're leading you around on a circular r

An unbelievably close look at a child's feelings.......2007-06-23
In this book, Jenna Forrest has really captured a child's view of life in a way that brings us, as adults, back to our own childhood feelings and memories with a clarity most of us have likely lost.
As a parent, it is refreshing to realize how our own children may perceive things that to adults may seem ordinary or important. I hope to take this perspective into my daily interactions with understanding my own children.
A true story, Forrest bravely bares her soul in a memoir that is sure to touch every reader. There were many inspirational messages throughout the book, discovered by Forrest as she matured. My favorite being one that we all can and should bring to our own adult lives... "Being closer to people. I think that's what freedom really is... Realizing with relief that you are at last ready to show people your eyes instead of your back." I think it takes great courage to do this and I know I strive each day to live in just that way.
A fantastic read. Great front cover, but I don't think the description on the back cover does justice to the depth of the story.
Get it. Read it. It was great.
Powerful words.......2007-06-06
This commanding true narrative leaves you hanging onto every word. The author's writing style creates powerful images for the reader, as if you are struggling right along side this young girl.
An excellent read!!.......2007-06-06
I thought this was a great book. So many times, it's so easy to remember childhood as an easy time when all anyone had to do was play and had no responsibilities. Often we forget that childhood is actually a
very tough, confusing time for anyone, especially a deeply emotional and sensitive kid like Jenna. In the book, Jenna Forrest vividly explores the fears, love, anxiety, and wonder of childhood not through the filter of an adult looking back, but through the wide-open eyes of a child. And she nails it. The sights and smells of the world of a child are so real and tangible you feel like you're really living in Jenna's skin. I recommend this book for anyone who was ever a child (and to anyone who ever wants to be a parent.) There are an amazing number of life lessons here, but the tone is never pandering or didactic. She just let's the world unfold and allows us an intimate peek into a time of life that most of us have boxed up and long forgotten.
Book Description
On a rainy day in May 1988, a lowland gorilla named Willie B. stepped outdoors for the first time in twenty-seven years, into a new landscape immersion exhibit. Born in Africa, Willie B. had been captured by an animal collector and sold to a zoo. During the decades he spent in a cage, zoos stopped collecting animals from the wild and Americans changed the ways they wished to view animals in the zoo. Zoos developed new displays to simulate landscapes like the Amazon River basin and African forests. Exhibits similar to animals' natural habitats began to replace old-fashioned animal houses.
But such displays are only the most recent effort of zoos to present their audiences with an authentic experience of nature. Since the first zoological park opened in the United States in Philadelphia in 1874, zoos have promised their visitors a journey into the natural world. And for more than a century they have been popular places for education and recreation: every year more than 130 million Americans go to zoos to look at the animals and enjoy a day outdoors.
The first book-length history of American zoos, Animal Attractions examines the meaning of nature in the city by looking at the ways zoos have assembled and displayed their animal collections. Situated literally and culturally in the American middle landscape, zoos are concrete expressions of longstanding tensions between wildness and civilization, science and popular culture, education and entertainment. In their efforts to promote nature appreciation, they reveal much about how our culture envisions the natural world and the human place in it and how these ideas have changed.

Laugh Out Loud Funny at Times, Seriously Romantic Throughout.......2007-07-19
This book was great! I found myself seriously laughing out loud, having people look at me weird. But it's understandable when you read something like this. Jane goes through some funny stuff. She has to deal with all the problems of high school. The evil witch who used to be your best friend, the case of the crush, and more. Poor Jane. She's got to deal with all that ... in a beaver suit. Really funny and romantic! At first, you might wish for a different ending. But once you think about it, everything ended perfectly. Loved this book.
YA fans will certainly find themselves attracted to Ponti's debut.......2007-06-01
Seventeen-year-old Jane Quincy is convinced that her life is nothing more than one huge Conspiracy. Unfortunately, that Conspiracy doesn't run in her favor. Instead, it chooses to play against her, plotting to keep her from experiencing any happiness or joy within the course of her lifetime. Thus far, romance has evaded her clutches like a kindergartner evades naptime. But Jane is finally putting her foot down. Now, during the summer between junior and senior years; her last chance to taste freedom before entrenching herself in schoolwork, and bracing herself for the long road of college that lies ahead, Jane has decided to switch it up a bit. After hearing the song "Summer of Love" by the B-52's, Jane - a big-believer in Radio Karma - decides that there's only one thing to do...become Bikini Jane. With the help of her best friends, Mel and Becca, Jane concocts an alter-ego known simply as Bikini Jane, who is flirty, fun, and totally hot. Now, whenever Jane finds herself tongue-tied, or nervous about...anything, she simply has to ask herself What Would Bikini Jane Do? Luckily, Jane has snagged the job of a lifetime at Magic Waters - Tragic Waters to the locals. For once, luck is shining a bright light upon her, giving Jane the opportunity to be one of the ultra-hot, boy-enticing mermaids in the Mermaid Show. Jane can't believe her luck. Usually only girls who are surgically enhanced land a job in the Mermaid Show, and since Jane is the complete opposite, she's thrilled. Sadly, her happiness is short-lived, when she learns that, if she wants to land a swimming scholarship to USC, she'll have to kiss her fins goodbye. Now Jane is left starstruck. Craving to be a mermaid, but forced to spend her afternoons dancing around Tragic Waters dressed as Eager Beaver. It doesn't sound terrible, but it certainly is. As Eager Beaver, Jane is forced to wear a heavy, furry, beaver costume all day long that makes it nearly impossible to breathe or to see. This was supposed to be Jane's summer of flirting with countless guys as she spent her days swimming circles in a glistening pool. But the only guy Jane is able to do much flirting with is Grayson, her new pal who has played Platypus Rex for the last three years. Grayson is a fun new acquaintance, whom Jane is quickly drawn to. As a friend, of course. But she's looking for something more - with someone else. Luckily, that something more appears in the form of seventeen-year-old Alex Walker. While working her second job as a swim instructor at the YMCA, Jane is introduced to Alex, a Washington-native staying with his father and hip-talking - and totally lame - stepmother. Alex is terrified of the water since a near-drowning experience he had when he was a kid, but is determined to conquer his fear. Jane is convinced that she can work her magic touch on Alex. But the more time she spends with him, the more she begins to see him as a potential boyfriend. Someone she would certainly enjoy spending a little more one-on-one time with. But to snag him, she'll have to reinvent herself, and embrace her confident side. After all, that's what Bikini Jane would do.
As odd as it sounds, I have always dreamed of spending a summer working as either Chip or Dale at Disneyland. To me, that sounds like a bizarre, off-beat, yet totally fun way to spend your summer vacation. So when I spotted the cover of Jamie Ponti's ANIMAL ATTRACTION, depicting a teenage girl wearing a furry beaver costume at an amusement park, I couldn't resist giving it a whirl. I am happy to say, it doesn't disappoint. Jane is an enchanting character, whose determination to not only pay off a debt to her parents, but snag a great guy all in one summer shows how dedicated she is to getting what she wants; while, at the same time, displaying her loyalty, and ability to be true to her word. Her thoughts regarding Radio Karma are quite humorous, and actually plant the Radio Karma bug in the reader's mind, making it seem like the perfect way to start the day. Jane's two closest friends - Mel and Becca - add a little diversity to the tale. Becca, a bombshell with a bee tattooed on her behind, is flirty and fun, and confident in everything she does; while Mel, on the other hand, brings intelligence and logic to the table, making them an ideal threesome. While it's great to see the three girls share fun times with one another, the one thing that can make you feel slightly uncomfortable is how downright nasty they can be when they get together. Some of the comments they make about their classmates - the uber-popular Crystal Gentry, in particular - along with random girls are just downright mean, and make you view the trio in a different light. However, the fact that Ponti makes their gossip-fests more of a side-story, makes it easier to tolerate. Alex is a handsome character, who seems like the charming, dashing prince. And, while he's a smooth character, I actually found myself partial to Grayson. Grayson seems like a fun person, much like a guy you'd want to know in real-life. The fact that he's not embarrassed by his position as Platypus Rex is a great trait, and actually makes him more endearing as the book goes on. It doesn't hurt much that he has a fabulous sense of humor, and knows what he wants in life. Ponti has made it easy to love each and every character; while her ability to describe life as a walking stuffed animal seems eerily accurate and knowledgeable, making you wonder whether she has ever held a position such as Jane or Grayson's. YA fans will certainly find themselves attracted to Ponti's debut.

loved it.......2007-04-13
this book is perfect for girls my age. it is completely true to voice as well. i found myself saying "i would do that" many times throughout the book.
HILARIOUS!!.......2006-07-12
"Look at that," Mom says. "Janey's actually smiling at breakfast. That's unusual."
"That is unusual," Dad says. "Janey, why are you smiling?"
I roll my eyes. "Because I just love my Honeycombs."
Dad nods. "That must be her pet name for him-Honeycombs."
Okay so we know the story. Girl meets boy. Girl likes boy. Girl embarrasses herself to get boy. So when girl gets boy, why does this other boy so attractive?
I've been reading this book since I woke up this morning and I cant stop laughing. I love how Jane is just like me. She's not like the Gossip Girls who are all concerned with money and the best clothes. She just wants to have fun.
Awesome novel!.......2006-06-30
Wow there are no words to describe how much I loved this book. It was awesome. For one: I loved Jane (the main character). I hate the whiny, annoying, self-involved brats that seem to pop up in teen literature so much these days so Jane was a refreshing change. Jane was very real and yet very sweet and cute. I would love to have a friend like her.
The romance - or should I say romances? - was fun and really believable. I liked both guys Jane was attracted to and she didn't come off being wishy-washy. I recommened this book to all young women. Enjoy!

Pretty good only if you have time.......2001-02-19
Well I read the book and in it there are a lot of interesting facts and different ways to identify animals and plants. But the only downside is that it is not good for quick identification because you need to first find the page for your specific animal group then find out exactly which species it is.
Good Book, but only good if you have a lot of time.......2001-02-01
This book is a very good book. However, the only drawback is that in the field when you go camping or whereever you are trying to identify something you need to thumb through pages until the pages match your observations of the specimen then identify by pictures. Now everything gets identified, but it just takes a little longer to do then other field guides.

A funny read and strangely incisive..........2005-09-09
Caveat: My opinion of this book is buoyed by the fact that the results pegged me for a Lion or Tiger. How great is that!?!
In any event, it's a fun book that you can easily get other people interested in, with humorous results. On a side note, I do wish the author could explain why most people taking this survey came out as Otters--an Otter Epidemic.
It is also very interesting how the results really reflect one's sense of self.
Anyway, good stuff...buy it cheapskate!
Accurate and amazing!.......2005-03-12
I just took the test featured as: http://www.animalinyou.com/survey.asp based on this book...and amazingly came up as Otter...my totem animal! I even have a beautiful Otter rising from a lotus surrounded with blue chinese flames tatoo on my shoulder and back of this lovely creature, so i am very serious about this. My daughter Kelly who just turned me on to the site is also an otter! Mother and daughter otters! How wonderful to connect with our brothers and sisters of nature. We all need to remember our deepest links to life!
Excellent Book!!!.......2002-08-17
I bought it two months ago and I've done the test to everyone who comes nearby. I love them and I enjoy reading both of them! I think the author (Roy Feinson) ahould keep on writing such excellent books... and such funny books!

Fun and interesting.......1999-10-26
A few friends and I sat around and read this book. It's really fun. You take this small survey and the answers match you to certain animals. You read the description of the animals and choose which one you relate with the most. It was pretty accurate and lots of fun. We got to figure out how we saw ourselves AND how others analyzed us. It's a great and fun read with friends.

Intriguing, stimulating, amazing book!.......2005-07-10
While studying for cynology certification, I read this book for class. Written by a veterinarian and cynologist, I've never read a book that encouraged me quite this much to delve deeper into the subject and to cross reference so many other books. The appendix contains an overwhelming amount of books to further my studies. The book is worth reading just to find out the latest research into the origin of man, where he moved on land, and how he developed with the dog by his side beginning about 100,000 years ago.
Never a "yawner," this book kept me up until 3am many nights because I just couldn't put it down. The way the author explains theories and development of the domesticated canine is really a mind jolt. Thanks so much for such a great piece of work!
The author's references to other works on the subject is exhaustive and intriguing. I learned so much about so many things concerning the behavior, development, and the canine adaptation and domestication in this book. I could not even begin to tell you all the things I learned about dogs and cats that I never knew.
