Book Description
In 1951, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were tried for and convicted of conspiring to steal atomic secrets. In 1953, their execution tore American apart. Fifty years later, the acrimonious debate over the Rosenbergs' guilt, and the raw emotions unleashed by a case that fueled McCarthyism and the cold war, still reverberate.
One man doomed the Rosenbergs: David Greenglass, Ethel Rosenberg's brother, the young army sergeant who spied for the Soviets at Los Alamos during World War II and whose testimony later sealed his sister and brother-in-law's fate. After serving ten years in prison, he was released in 1960 and vanished.
But Sam Roberts, a New York Times editor, found David Greenglass and, after fourteen years, finally persuaded him to talk. Drawn from the first unrestricted-access interviews ever granted by Greenglass and supplemented by revelations from dozens of other key players in the case--including the Russian agent who controlled Julius Rosenberg; by newly declassified American and Soviet government documents; and by personal letters never before publishes, among them on from Albert Einstein;
The Brother is the mesmerizing inside story of misplaced idealism, love and betrayal behind the atomic-espionage case that J. Edgar Hoover condemned as the Crime of the Century.
In more than fifty hours of tape-recorded conversations with the author, Greenglass intimately detailed his recruitment into espionage on Manhattan's Lower East Side, how he spied for the Russians at American's most secret military installation, and how the plot unraveled and led to the arrests of David, Julius, and Ethel.
But even beyond that, this book reveals how Greenglass perjured himself during his riveting courtroom testimony--testimony that virtually strapped his sister and brother-in-law into Sing Sing's electric chair.
Delivering a narrative punch on every page,
The Brother is the story of a family. It is a story of atomic espionage. It is the story of the trial that turned a nation upside down and that even now divides the American left. Convincingly and with authority, The Brother tells a tale driven by secrets, suspense, and intense human intrigue.

The End of the Affair.......2003-05-27
Sam Roberts found David Greenglass and persuaded him to talk for this very readable 500 page book. It tells of their family histories. How did David Greenglass get assigned to Los Alamos (p.70)? Perhaps due to his talents? He was cleared by Army and FBI investigators (p.71). Soviet atom bomb development began in 1939, they deduced American research in 1940 (p.80). Julius Rosenberg became involved with Soviet espionage, and a recruiter of people who could provide "technical information". The crime is committed when the message is relayed (p.92). Life in Oak Ridge or Los Alamos is likened to a socialist paradise where the government provides for everyone; but not all enjoy Army life (pp.100-1). None suspected that DG's insatiable curiosity was to gather information for a foreign government (p.104). Winston Churchill's scientists asked for dynamite lenses (p.107). How to steal a proximity fuse? Get a defective reject then replace the broken parts with working parts (p.109).
With the war over, DG was no longer interested in helping the Soviets (p.147). The Soviet atomic research resumed in 1943 (p.182), their first atomic test occurred in 1949. This affected the political outlook in Washington (p.183). When they deciphered a message on gaseous diffusion in refining uranium, this led to its author and prime suspect - Klaus Fuchs (p.188). Another deciphered message said a spy at Los Alamos went on vacation in Jan 1945 (p.197); 100 suspects were turned up. The two prime suspects were Luis Alvarez and Edward Teller - the best friend of Klaus Fuchs.
DG's confession is on page 242. He hired O. John Rogge and cooperated with the FBI; he could not testify against his wife (p.261). Greenglass and Gold were interviewed together to harmonize their stories (p.278). The Government wanted Julius Rosenberg to confess and identify other members of the spy ring (p.282); the death penalty was the threat (p.287). David was trained as a draftsman and had surprising neat handwriting (p.297). Page 317 says his handwriting needed to be typed, and this implicated Ethel in the crime. The trial found them all guilty. The Rosenbergs got death, but they insisted on their innocence and never cracked. They were convicted on the word of the Greenglasses alone, there was no independent corroborative evidence given at their trial. I think the failure to show spending or money from their spying was a failure in the Government's case. The rule is that spies get paid for their information ("The Double-Cross System").
Some questioned the scientific value of Greenglass' atom bomb sketch. It was "valuable information" to corroborate the information given by Klaus Fuchs (p.408). The 1946 Smyth Report gave much more information on atomic energy research than given by Klaus Fuchs (p.410)! Page 425 lists the information that Julius could give to delay their execution; nothing was asked of Ethel. President Eisenhower denied clemency because they "increased the chance of atomic war and may have condemned tens of millions of innocent people to death" (p.430).
Chapter 36 has Greenglass' "final confession". He thought the worse thing he did was working on the atomic bomb because it killed a hundred thousand people (p.469). He didn't regret his spying if it prevented another war (p.479). David and Ruth now said they didn't remember Ethel typing the notes, but "that's the way it would have been done" (p.483). Without this, Ethel might not have been convicted. Why didn't Julius and Ethel save themselves? Because it would mean putting other people in their hot seat (p.493). DG's verdict: they were guilty, but they didn't deserve to die (p.496). This disproportionate punishment may explain Pope Pius XII's call for clemency. The Prosecution team never again won distinction in their careers.
rehash and one interview.......2003-01-26
The book is an extremely readable book . My major complaint seems to be that it is a rehash of previous boks such as the Rosenberg File by Ron Radosh and Implosion Conspiracy by Nizor. The only original research is at the end of the book in which Roberts is granted an interview with david Greenglass. There were many questions that could have been asked. Greenglass seems to be in current money difficulties and may be twisting events of long ago to suit his current needs. Greenglass appears to be operating under the assumption that Roberts will give him a favorable portrayal. Roberts shows the negative side of what Greenglss did. If true that the government had David make aallegations about Ethel it is a sobering display of prosecutorial misconduct. Robert does not comment on the implication od this and this should be a cental component (if true) on the historical commentary of this case.
A Triumph.......2002-07-31
The Brother by Sam Roberts is a masterpiece, capturing the crime of the century that has been troubling the nation for decades.
Author should have shown, not told.......2002-06-18
Author Sam Roberts has done a thorough job of telling the story of David Greenglass, so one is mystified at why he felt compelled to demonize his subject. Readers are fully capable of drawing their own conclusions about Greenglass, brother of Ethel Rosenberg. Roberts has given us more than enough material to sift through, his narrative skills are impressive. Actually one shouldn't be surprised at Roberts' bias, his contempt for Greenglass is obvious in the book's subtitle. Editorializing about Greenglass (who sold atomic bomb information to the Russians in 1945 while serving in the military at Los Alamos) should have been reserved for an afterword. This, along with sometimes excessive detail, are rather large blemishes on an otherwise exemplary work. Roberts provides a rich account of growing up a poor Jewish immigrant in 1930's New York, the U.S. during World War II and the homefront during the Cold War. But I'd have appreciated developing my own distaste for Greenglass, had that been my choice. Indeed it's possible to feel some sympathy for Greenglass and his plight.
This is, nonetheless an important work on the Rosenbergs, American Communist ideals and the curious business of spying.
A significant addition to Rosenberg case literature.......2002-05-31
In this unique book, which is based upon interviews with David Greenglass, light is shed on the complex family relationships that led to a brother testifying against his sister. The most significant new information offered by the book is the role played by Mrs. Greenglass, a willing member of the espionage ring, and her husband's desire to shield her from prosecution at the expense of his sister. Other pertinent reading on this case includes The Rosenberg File by Radosh and Milton, and the recent book by Aleksandr Feklisov.

There's only one solution: Mom has to go underground again, and this time, she's bringing Andrew and Evie with her.The twins are used to moving to new places, so at first taking on new identities doesn't seem like that big a deal. It's kind of fun, actually. But soon Andrew and Evie realize they're not just leaving behind another town -- they're leaving behind themselves, their personalities. And there's one more thing, too... Pop.

Exciting fourth book in the Spy X series........2005-08-03
This is the fourth book in the Spy X series, about eleven-year-old twins Andrew and Evie Wall, who become involved in the world of spying and secret codes after their mother's disappearance.
Andrew and Evie have finally been reunited with their mother. But it's not the reunion they have been imagining since she first disappeared, almost a year ago. They can't get back to their own lives -- Mom must remain underground as a member of The Resistance, a group opposing The Company, the spy organization she used to work for until she learned of its unethical goals. But now, she is taking Andrew and Evie to join her in hiding. The danger still remains, and Andrew and Evie are horrified when they learn their father is on the opposite side, as a member of The Company. When Mom gets captured, can Andrew and Evie rescue her?
Kids who enjoyed the previous Spy X books are sure to enjoy this one as well, and I'd recommend the whole series to kids who enjoy mystery and adventure series. Unfortunately, it seems to be the last book for now. I hope there are more books in this series later on, as this one leaves a lot open.

Very entertaining spy story.......2006-11-13
I've enjoyed all of the Alias books, and this one was one of the most enjoyable. Fun for all ages! It's so great to keep entertained by these books since the series was ended.
Good story with an interesting twist.......2004-10-06
Sister Spy is about Sydney's mission to join the Alpha Kappa Chi sorority at UCLA. At first, this seems to be an interesting and challenging mission for Sydney. She is not the type to hang out with sorority girls and fraternity guys. In fact, she hates the whole college party scene. As part of her mission, she learns of another college student at UCLA who was an undercover agent for SD-6. The girl recently died of natural causes. Sydney feels some sort of bond with the girl which helps her through the mission. It is Sydney's job to join the sorority, find out what happened to the girl and find out who could have possibly killed her. Sydney has do to all this without telling her best friend and roommate, Francie, about her real intentions. Sydney and Francie check out Alpha Kappa Chi together and even go on a trip with the sisters to Hawaii. Sydney focuses her attention on the murderer and attempts to perform a mission while in Hawaii. Just when you think you have the story figured out, there is a big twist.
Alias Fun.......2004-06-22
As a big Alias fan, I thought this was a fun little read, seeing what the unsinkable Sydney was like back before the TV series started. Better writing than I had expected from a novelization.
Cliche Characters.......2004-04-22
while i totally enjoyed reading this short novel (mainly because i love love love sydney!!!), the college sorority characters all seemed to fit into cliche grooves--what you expect to find in a hoity toity sorority is all there. the author seemed to manipulate us and sydney into suspecting the wrong person. however, it is true with sydney's character that she does have a tendency to jump to conclusions and about 40% of the time she is wrong, so i suppose that would fit into her character development. (especially when she jumps to conclusions regarding her father.) and sometimes i wonder what era sydney is living in. i mean, who wears spandex to go running these days? spandex isn't even 90's, it's totally 80's! i know in the tv series they try to keep sydney's wardrobe very classic and timeless, so it would be nice if the authors would try the same. but maybe i am being too critical. i just cannot picture sydney wearing spandex shorts to go running.
this was my least favorite alias book so far, but i still enjoyed it. but mainly because Noah shows up here and there. when he was introduced in the tv series, i loved him. he was smart, hot, confident and cocky. and in response to the girl who wrote how she couldn't wait to see how their relationship ends up, if you paid any attention to the series you know what happens: noah runs away from sydney because he cannot handle doing what he does and being crazy in love with her at the same time. he emails her before he leaves for his new post in europe and and she never reads it because her junk mail gets automatically deleted. she never knows he tried to say goodbye, she thought he just left without a word. and then they hook up again & she finds out he's the Snowman and all heck breaks loose. But even though i know their reltionship is ultimately doomed, i COMPLETELY enjoy reading about how they met and how their romance develops through this and every other alias novel. sydney and noah totally sizzle.
Keep 'em coming........2003-07-28
As a hopelessly devoted "Alias" fan, OF COURSE I'm going to buy all the Alias merch I can get my greedy little hands on. Laura Peyton Roberts is quickly becoming my favorite Prequel author, but I'll reserve further judgement for the Michael Vaughn novels (they feature different authors than Sydney's). I love the situations Roberts puts Sydney in... and gets her out of. It's amazing what kind of situations you can put a secret agent through if you have a big enough imagination and let your pen do the talking. Of course, I screamed when she and Noah finally hooked up. In the show, Noah came off as kind of dry, but through the books, he's starting to grow on me. I can't wait to see how the Syd/Noah thing ends.

From an AP English student.......2007-05-29
After reading books like Heart of Darkness, and Benito Cereno, Shadow Patriots was happily read. I loved the character Lizzie, her strength and personality was humerous. I also enjoyed how this book was fictional, yet didn't stretch the truth very far.
Phenomenal.......2007-05-24
After being able to hear Robson speak at my school, I was overjoyed to be given the opprotunity to read her novel. Not long after reading the book I became enthralled and unable to put the book down. Every second of the book was fascinating. The way Robson wraps the historical figures in with her fictional plot is remarkable. As far as I know the book is historically accurate and has all the great names in American history such as George Washington, Ben Franklin, Alexander Hamiliton, and much much more. The main character Kate Darby is truely unique and sensational. She tears down the stereotype of a damsel in distress and proves that women can do whatever they put their minds do. Incredible Novel and quick read.
An English Student.......2007-05-23
I read this book in my 11th grade English class not too long ago and it was so much more than I expected. The way the historical figures are mixed in with fictional characters makes it so interesting, and the mixing is so well done, you find yourself wondering who is made-up and who is not. On more than one occasion, I found myself unable to put the book down late at night. When I finished reading, I looked into some of the historical figures in the book, and Ms. Robson was very accurate with her information. All in all, this book makes history come alive!
Shadow Patriots.......2007-05-17
This book was absolutely incredible for its detail. I loved reading the description of how life was in the time period. Robson's little tidbits-perfectly placed throughout the story- were so fascinating and knowing they were true added to the story. Robson made me feel as though I were there in the war and knew all the characters. It was not a typical book about the Revolution. It was captivating; I could not put it down. Its plot kept getting better and better with each page, and the ending, although sad, was perfect. The book was suprising and entertaing from the first to the last word.
Kate and Lizzie were characters I adored. Kate's bravery to help her brother, and Lizzie's devotion to Seth were fantastic attributions to each character and helped me identify with them. While reading, I didn't feel as though I was learning about history, which is a perfect way for historical fiction book to be written.
Loved it! .......2007-05-14
If you have interest in revolutionary times in USA this is a must read. The role that Quakers played in the war was very interesting to me. You will not be sorry you bought it.

SPY-X THE CODE.......2006-12-08
This book is about two twins Andrew and his sister Evie. Their mom disappears on their eleventh birthday. Well, their mom leaves them a note and they find out the note is in code. So now they are on a wild goose chase to find their mom. There are four books in the series and I think you should read them to find out what happens.
Chun,Matthew - Spy X.......2006-03-27
For 12-year-old kids Andrew and Evie moving is a way of life. Their dad in the military and their mom is always gone for her work at a business. They don't know where their mom works and she will never tell them. Most of the time she is never home, but at work. Then one day they move to a new house again and meet their knew neighbor. Mrs. Digitalis. They find out that Mrs. Digitalis knows more about there mom then them, and works for the same company as their mom. They learn more about their mom from her and a few days later they receive a package from an address and find a few normal objects in the box. Then they realize that the stuff in the box were not ordinary but spy tools. They learn things from Mrs. Digitalis and crack some codes to find out where their mom is. In the end they end up moving once again.
I liked this book because it had real codes in it and they weren't easy codes to figure out. Clues lead to more clues that led to more clues that led to the answers in witch you have to use your brain to crack. It also has many cliffhangers so if you read 1 chapter you always want to read another chapter. I also liked this book because it is a mystery book and I usually like mystery books.
My favorite part in the book is when they get the key that opens anything. They get a box full of regular things. Or though they thought but, they realize that everything in the box isn't what it seams and that a key in the box can open any door! Imagine if you had that key you could open anything in the world that had a lock. All the locks would be useless if a bully stole anything you could get it back if it had a key hole!
Misterious ending! best book!.......2006-01-27

Book Description
In The Scarlet Stockings Spy Trinka Hakes Noble has masterfully created a heroine who is as brash and idealistic as her young country. Young Maddy Rose teaches the reader that the role of patriot has nothing to do with age and everything to do with heart.

excellent history lesson for anyone.......2005-09-01
I bought this book to use with my class, 4th graders, when studying the Revolutionary War. It brings it to life in the eyes of a brother and sister. Excellent illustrations and brings history into everyone's heart. A very patriotic book, but yet kids can relate to the story line.
Incredible Book! A gripping way to learn history........2005-08-08
This book is set in Philadelphia and depicts the start of the Revolutionary War from the perspective of a little girl who acts as a spy for Washington's army. She sends messages via her laundry on the clothes line to her brother. The oil painted illustrations are stunning. I couldn't believe the depth of the story line and the integration of historical facts this book communicated to my children and me. This is the best children's book for this time period I've found. It would be great for a homeschool unit study. It's full of information on the timeperiod, challenging vocabulary words, artistic detail, and drama.
Gorgeous illustrations and clever historical fiction!.......2004-11-25
Being a children's illustrator myself, I am often pretty critical of children's book illustrations. But the moment I picked up this book I had to have it. Robert Papp's soft, atmospheric oil paintings beautifully depict life in Philadelphia in 1777 with great detail and emotion. Maddy Rose is a believable character, from her red stockings to her adorable chin. Trinka Hakes Noble does a brilliant job of transporting the reader back in time to the tense climate of the Revolutionary War. There is suspense, joy and sorrow equally depicted in text and in pictures. This book would make a perfect gift for a child who has interest in history, but also for a girl who needs a heroine. This book is the kind that is passed down from generation to generation. Congratulations to the writer and illustrator.

Good historical fiction set in Colonial times........2004-09-26
The American colonies lie on the brink of revolution, and eleven-year-old Kate Milton is torn between the two sides of the approaching conflict. Her parents are firm Loyalists, and her father, a doctor, believes it is his duty as an Englishman to obey the law, even if he disagrees with it. Kate thinks some of what the Loyalists say make sense. But her other relatives, including her cousin, Colin, who is her closest friend, are all Patriots, and some of what they say makes sense to Kate, too. When Kate witnesses the Boston Tea Party in December 1773, it just leaves her more confused. Over the next year and a half, Kate struggles with what role to take in the war that seems certain to come, especially when the British government punishes Boston harshly for the destruction of the tea and British soldiers occupy the city.
Young readers who enjoy stories set in Colonial times will most likely enjoy this book, however it's not a must-read. The characters were likable, but I felt they needed a little more development. I plan to try some other books in this series to see what they are like.
