Book Description

Your total guide to putting a powerful management tool to work in your organization

Why strategic planning? Because a well wrought strategic plan helps you set priorities and acquire and allocate the resources needed to achieve your goals. It provides a framework for analyzing and quickly adapting to future challenges. And it helps all board and staff members focus more clearly on your organization's priorities, while building commitment and promoting cooperation and innovation.

But to be effective, your plan will need to address the special needs of the nonprofit sector. And for more than a decade, Strategic Planning for Nonprofit Organizations has been the number-one source of guidance on all facets of strategic planning for managers at nonprofits of every size and budget.

This thoroughly revised, updated, and expanded edition arms you with the expert knowledge and tools you need to develop and implement surefire strategic plans, including tested-in-the-trenches worksheets, checklists, and tables—in print and on the companion CD-ROM—along with a book-length case study that lets you observe strategic planning in action. 5 out of 5 stars My Board loved the charts.......2007-06-08

The Planning Committee of the Board of Directors at my nonprofit wants to get the full Board engaged in strategic planning within a year. The chart in this book that shows the steps in the process was just what they wanted. It was worth the purchase price...and we haven't started to use it yet!

4 out of 5 stars Strategic leaders at NPOs should read this book.......2006-04-23

The authors of this book do a nice job of condensing the content of their book into a diagram at page 15 that they entitle: "The Strategic Planning Process." Then they explain the diagram chapter by chapter. The chapters are full of good information and lots of exhibits, worksheets, and real-life examples. Job well done! I recommend to anybody interested in preparing a business plan for a for-profit or a nonprofit to read this book. And I also recommend all strategic leaders (i.e. executive directors, board chairs, and CEOs) read this book. It should be helpful to them in performing their job duties.

The book basically points out the following series of questions and/or tasks a strategic leader much consider when doing his or her job:

1. What is the organization doing now?
2. What are its strengths?
3. What are its weaknesses?
4. Are we heading in the direction we want?
5. What must we change to get back on track?
6. Prepare a written plan for change.
7. Implement the plan for change.
8. Monitor the implementation.
9. Reevaluate the plan for change.

I would have liked the book better if the authors had more accurately described what a business plan is, and what it is used for. The authors seem to think that a business plan is something that a for-profit entity creates in order to get loans from lenders or capital from investors. While it is true this is one of the reasons for writing a business plan, the more important reason a plan is written is that it acts as a roadmap for the leader and management of the business to follow towards success. Most businesses that do not have a written business plan are doomed for failure. NPOs without a business plan will probably not be successful either.

Another shortcoming I found in the book was that the authors do not point out that NPOs need a "business plan" just as much as does a for-profit. NPOs also need a roadmap to follow. Whether the authors want to admit it or not, a business plan for an NPO is pretty much the same document as a business plan for an organization seeking profits. The difference between the two plans exists in the marketing section - and that is the only difference. NPOs need to market to their customers/clients and to philanthropists that have a connection and commitment to their cause, whereas for-profit businesses need only market to their customers/clients.

Any NPO should have a business plan starting on the day it comes into existence. The strategic planning process described in this book can be used to create that written business plan. Therefore, this book is for NPO founders. After the business plan exists and it is being used as a roadmap to success, then the effectiveness of the plan must be monitored regularly. When it appears the plan is not proving effective, then the strategic planning process described in this book should be used again to implement change to get the NPO back on track to success.

Strategic leadership is a critical role that any leader must play, and if he or she can't, then she has no business assuming a leadership role. A "leader" who does not know how to perform strategic leadership is merely a manager, not a leader. I think it is a sad state of affaires that so many executive directors and board chairs are clueless when it comes to strategic planning - thus they are just managers. The authors, by writing this book, have created a resource for wanta-be leaders to use to learn how to do an important and critical part of their job - lead strategically.

4 out of 5 stars good basic introduction.......2006-03-17

Book provides a good basic introduction to strategic planning from the non-profit perspective. Although I already knew strategic planning from the corporate side, this book showed how it differs when applied to the non-profit arena. The review of the SWOT process was a bit simplistic, but I found the checklist for evaluating projects helpful. The disc and the worksheets were definitely worth the price of the book

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Non-profit Boardmembers.......2005-09-30

This book is a step by step guide with suggested modifications to fit the needs of any group. The worksheets, included on an accompanying CD, are very useful. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in strategic planning for any organization - public, private or non-profit.

5 out of 5 stars For those serious about strategic planning!.......2005-09-12

A great book that does what many non-profit management books don't -- talks about dollars and cents as well as need and impact. CD is underutilized (compared with, say, the CD included with "Non-Profit Kit for Dummies"), but the worksheet concept is good. Their "do either this OR this" might be confusing for novices. Not too far of a stretch to connect this with a "balanced scorecard" evaluation. CompassPoint's Dual Bottom-Line Matrix (p. 188), while complicated-sounding, actually should clarify decision-making for many non-profit managers.

5 out of 5 stars rudy against the empire.......2007-09-30

i know myself that i'm almost finished w/ the novel but haven't read it through... but it's very good, i can't wait what will happen to ferus olin and see ben kenobi along w/ him. i love the front and back cover of the book
over in Coruscant. I will hoping to read all through 10 novels of TLOTJ series.

5 out of 5 stars hey jude great job!.......2007-08-14

i disagree with that other reviewer who said timothy zahn is the best with jude watson.i hate the timothy zahn books.and that was when us star wars fans were starving for something new to read about star wars and heir to the empire came out,i bought it like many others wanting something new to read.and i was greatly dissapointed and his 2nd and 3rd book of that trilogy didnt get any better so i stopped buying his books.i guess i been spoiled by the star wars books i read growing up by writers like the great brian daley may he rest in peace, and the great alan dean foster.and i have been dissapointed by most of the new books and the different new authors to star wars books that have come out.finally a writer that is worthy of star wars has come along.a great writer and im happy that jude gets to write more books for star wars.i also enjoyed jude's first book star wars journal princess leia's diary of episode 4.captive to evil.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars.......2007-08-07

Ferus is still working as a double agent struggling the thin line of going along with Palpatine to keep from being killed and trying to he's position to help out his resistance friends. This becomes very difficult in this book when the Empire wants Ferus to return to his homeplanet as a poster boy for former resistance leader turned Empire. The Empire taking control of the factories which looks as if their helping the planet by providing jobs. This naturally will make it appear to the resistance that Ferus is completely with the Empire. Naturally the Empire's plans are not that nice with Vader on his tail Ferus finds it even more difficult to contact his friends to convince them their still on his side and attempting to undo the Empire's plan without Vader or the Empire finding out. The way this turns out was surprises as was then when Palpatine has yet another offer for Ferus. With Palpatine...its so hard to say no.

5 out of 5 stars Cliff Hangers as usual, mild spoilers possible.......2007-06-14

One always questions the validity and entertainment value in a spin-off of a spin-off series, but The Last of the Jedi is shaping up to be exciting. Ferus Olin's in full blown double agent mode and that's got him and his friends worried. Friendship and loyalty are certainly tested when it comes down to the question of "who do you serve?" or "How much hurt can one inflict while doing something necessary?"

Jude Watson's got a nice narrative style and a good sense for where to stick in humor. I can't wait until the next one comes out. (Yes, I'm an adult; yes, I know this is a kid's book; yes, this book is totally worth the $6.00)

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best!!.......2007-04-03

I've been a reader from day one and by far this is the most intense part of the series. I loved that there was a list of characters. I almost forgot some of the ones from the beginning and it was good to get familiar with them again. As I was reading, I felt the momentum of the story pick up towards the middle and then it just sky rocketed!! So much so, I left imprints of my fingers on the front and back cover! I don't want to give any of the storyline away but, I'll just say that I had to read some parts over again because of their emotional intensity and depth (I know, I know....I take these stories too seriously) It's such a great story. You'll definitely love it.

Without saying too much here's a little outline....

Ferus is still with the Empire working as a double agent. He gets sent on a mission back to his homeworld of Bellassa to "help" settle any resistance from the people. He is seen by his people as a traitor but his closest friends of course know the truth. Vader keeps Ferus out of "the know" and it's hard for him to find out the real reasons for the Empire's stay on his home planet. As soon as Ferus gets close to the truth, Vader tears into his soul with hatred from the dark side. In the end, Ferus's will to go on is waning and he finds an offer from Emperor Palpatine extremely appealing.

Ok, now go and buy the book! :)

5 out of 5 stars not just for teens...story telling is amazing.......2007-05-06

i had just finished Darth Bane a while back and was sad that i don't have anything else as exciting. Reading through some of the reviews i took a look at this small series which is intended for younger reader. I really want to point out that this series is amazing and keeps you wanting more. Jude is amazing at telling the story which e are all familiar with. There are even some of the small quarks that u instantly picture the movie in front of u as u read deeper and deeper into the story.

If u r a fan, u will love this.

5 out of 5 stars The Desperate Mission (Star Wars: The Last of the Jedi, Book 1).......2007-02-19

This book is great donot be fooled this book great for all ages 12 and up. The only thing juvenile is the length of about 160 pages. I am hooked will read the whole series.

3 out of 5 stars Good story, vocabulary too advanced for kids.......2006-03-23

My boys, ages 7&3, were looking foward to having mommy read them a chapter a night. It took twice as long as usual because I had to stop and give definition to almost every other word in the story. This factor was distracting and led to the otherwise Star Wars crazed children to become bored and ask me to put them to bed. I, on the other hand, loved it. Good story, wait for Jr. High.

3 out of 5 stars good book for its intended audience.......2006-03-10

If I were in Junior high I guess I would have liked it better... but I didn't have a bad time reading it.

5 out of 5 stars more adventure.......2006-02-27

Quick read. Lots of adventure and further insight into the Star Wars legend. Looking forward to reading the next episode.

I had to read this for a class and found it easy to read, but really out of date. Although revised in December of 2001, there is so much it left out in terms of changes in technology and 911 (and yes, these things do apply to Economics!) that I wonder how thoroughly it was updated.

If you're buying it, most probably you have to. Ask your professor to find a more current edition, but one that's as interesting and easy a read as this one, and you'll do fine in your Eco class!

      Book Description

When Apple introduced the iPod in 2001, CEO Steve Jobs declared, "listening to music will never be the same again." He was right on the money. The iPod grabbed attention right away, and by the end of 2005, more than 41 million of them had sold. iPod is the dominant digital music player on the market, and for the first time, Apple gets to feel like Microsoft.

iPod steadily evolved through five generations since then, and today the dynasty ranges from a screenless 512-megabyte version that can hold plenty of songs for your gym routine to a 60-gigabyte multimedia jukebox that can spin out an entire season of "Desperate Housewives", along with thousands of color photos and all that colorful music.

An iPod is many things to many people, but it can be much more than most people realize. That's where iPod & iTunes: The Missing Manual comes in. Like the device itself, this book is a long-running bestseller, now in its fourth edition. What makes it so popular is the wealth of useful information it brings to anyone who breaks open iPod's distinctive packaging-especially since Apple doesn't supply a manual of its own.

Once again, we've updated this guide to fully explain the ins and outs of iPod, including the nano, the shuffle, and all the latest features and uses, such as:

It's been five years since iPod hit the scene, but, clearly, the evolution has only just begun. iPod & iTunes: The Missing Manual gives you everything you need to evolve with it.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT REFERENCE FOR IPOD OWNERS.......2007-02-09

THIS BOOK TRULY HELPS THE OWNER OF IPODS MANAGE THIS GREAT MP3 PLAYER. IT EXPLAINS THOROUGHLY WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH AN IPOD THAT I NEVER DREAMED OF!!

2 out of 5 stars Too much bla bla!.......2007-01-19

Not of particular use to a new user of ipods. The author attempted to do two books in one by using a dule discription for each procedure (Mac and PC). In addition, too much history of why such and such was included. I felt this time consuming and unnecessary. The index was sadly lacking and many important topics were not to be found.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book to have!!.......2007-01-16

I had my POD just sitting there. This book is what should have been done. In twenty minutes of reading, I was loading,dropping,syncing....Well written, easy to understand. Now to keep all the other IPODers who want to borrow it! Buy it!

3 out of 5 stars iPod&iTunes not bad but could be shortened.......2007-01-16

I llike the Missing Manuals because they complement nicely the usually formal apple help style and dry manual style. But here the authors have exaggerated with "funny" sentences which do not add information - thus the otherwise IK book could be shortened by 20%

      4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-01-10

I found this book essential for the IPOD novice that I was when I bought both my IPOD and this book. Apple doesn't supply (yes I was quite shocked over that, especially since I had there top of the line IPOD)a manual with the IPOD I purchased. So I felt lost in terms of information and purchased this book. I found it to be very helpful and thus far has addressed and/or guided me through any problem or need for information that I have come across. A must for anyone with an IPOD put out by Apple.

      5 out of 5 stars Great on-the-go travel guide.......2007-05-01

My wife and I love the Top 10 series. We always buy a Frommers or Rick Steves book for the trip's planning, but the Top 10 is a must for the trip itself. It'll fit in a pocket (a long one), and will provide quick and easy references to the most important sights, as well as maps and public transportation routes.

5 out of 5 stars Take it with you.......2007-04-20

Another heart-stopping Jedi adventure from bestselling author Jude Watson.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Five Stars.......2007-08-07

Another excellent book in the Last of the Jedi series Ferus is still attempting to be a double agent pretending to work for the Emperor while at the same time still supporting his friends resisting the Empire. Ferus thinks he can handle it working this close to the dark side is a lot hard then he expects especially when Darth Vader wants him out of the picture while Ferus has no idea Vader was once his former rival at the Jedi Temple Anakin Skywalker but is attempting to figure out who Vader is. Their scenes are very exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Good Stepping Stone, though not the series' best.......2007-06-14

      Mild spoilers possible.

I read this book a week ago and can't remember much more than the general sense that I liked it. That's bad. But the story is necessary to set up book 7 of the series, so it's highly recommended you read it if you want to understand the next book (which BTW is great).

The price of freedom for Ferus Olin is collaboration with his personal enemy: the Empire. This necessarily puts a strain on things. Trever's all ready to help, but no one really trusts a kid, so he's taken matters into his own hands...that should be interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The adventure continues..........2007-01-27

I love this series and can't wait for the next installment! The characters are great and have the 'feel' of the SW saga. Excellent premise for the events that happened after Order 66, how the surviving Jedi fared, how early steps of the rebellion began and the evolving of Darth Vader. Excellent!

1 out of 5 stars WARNING = this is a Kids book. Not a normal star wars novel.......2007-01-24

5 out of 5 stars Can Watson go wrong?.......2006-12-26

This is yet another example of Watson's talent as a writer. Return is yet another execellent addition to the best Star Wars novel series of the year. Even though it is written for younger readers it out shines both the Dark Nest trilogy and the Legacy of the Force series now being released for adults by a mile. This book as well as the ones before are compelling and really draw you into the story no matter your age. I really wish Watson would write a full length Star Wars novel after this series is complete. You should buy and read this book as well as the rest of the series if you have not.
