Book Description
Can a fan's love go too far?
Christina is thrilled by Wonder's Star's recent wins on the track, but with Star's success comes some very strange –– and very creepy –– activity around the farm. First, someone breaks into the Whitebrook barn. Though physically unharmed, a jittery Star compels Christina to fly home abruptly from New York. Luckily, Christina's new friend Jessie is there to support her.
For safety's sake, Christina is forced to move her renowned horse after the break–in. But when trouble follows Star to Whisperwood and then to Tall Oaks, she begins to fear for Star's well–being . . . and for her own. Christina may be left with only one option: to move Star to Townsend Acres, where the security is excellent, but where her nemesis, Brad Townsend, is surely up to no good. . .

Star has a STALKER.......2007-03-30
I liked this book, but it was not my favorite. I think Christina was a little too protective of Star. I mean I would be worried too if it was my horse. But, why did she move Star to Townsend Acres? Well, it has great safety, but will Brad have something up his sleeve? But I liked how it added the mystery! It overall was a good book!
Great.......2005-08-26
This book was neat. I liked how the aythor kept u in suspense. It's also neat to see Christina go to Brad for help. I'm not bying Brad as a nice guy though. One thing I didn't like was how much it got Christina worked up. I liked the fact that the girl sent little notes and things to Christina. But since she loved Star alot I can understand why she would be alittle upset. A very good book with a mystery.
Great!.......2005-07-07
This is one of the best books in the series! Christina is happy with Wonder's Star's wins on the track. But along with fame comes danger. Someone has been following Star around lately. Star's 'Stalker' has been giving strange visits to him and gifts. Christina starts to worry about Star. She has to move him to different stables everywhere [the stalker follows him to the other stables as well.] Chris gets so scared she has to scratch Star from the Travers. But everything turns out O.K. in the end.
One thing though, why is Star's girth attached to the saddle pad? And why does the saddle have no stirrups? And in the books they say Star is a chestnut. But on the cover he looks more like a bay?
my favorite new generation book.......2005-01-08
okay, so i'm going to preface this by saying that this is the best new generation book i've ever read. better than any jennifer chu book, better than any others. mary anderson really pulled this one off. and no, i'm not just saying it cause i got a dedication it was like...everything that we had been complaining about came together in this book and suddenly was better. there ISN'T anything to complain about here.
so anyway, like i said, this was a great book. chris wasn't a brat, at all. she was a likeable character. we saw an explination of her actions, and what was remarkable, that chris realized she'd been a bit of a brat, and made a marked decision to be more respectful and thankful. there wasn't just some random change. also, there were the heartwarming family scenes, the return of kevin as an important character, and the development of the bond between chris and star. this books makes it easy to believe that once star stops racing, chris will move into vet school. really, this book addressed a lot of complaints we'd made about....well, everything. and turned them around. plus, it didn't seem like overkill. i'm actually excited to read more about this version of chris and star! a very different feeling from the one i got at the end of #62.
the only real mistake was that catwink, who was claimed in #57, was magically back at whitebrook. but other than that...i give this book 4 stars for quality and one for effort, so all together, that's five stars.
recent books indicate the series will continue on this track, and i hope the editors reconsider their decision to end the series.
Sigh........2004-11-21
I must say that the Thoroughbred series is becoming less and less well written. They are getting shorter and more predictable, and like a fellow reviewer mentioned, the cover art just plain sucks. It looks as though it was designed by someone with no knowledge whatsoever of horses. Galloping a horse in a halter. Riding on a saddle pad with no girth. I didn't find this book to be very enjoyable. Just reading the back of the book, it was clear who the stalker would be. There could at least have been some suspects. In fact, the sheer predictabiliy made me disappointed in Christina's intelligence. If I could figure it out, shouldn't she have been able to? Only my faith in the Thoroughbred series let me rate it 3 stars.

Book Description
Journalist Michael Joseph Gross takes us deep into the world of celebrities and the people who love them.
Why are we so obsessed with fame? Even if we don't read People, we all crane our necks to see the stars. As a teenager, Michael Joseph Gross amassed a collection of about four thousand autographs by writing letters to celebrities and world leaders. The collecting fever broke when he grew up, but his fascination with fandom remained.
In Starstruck, Gross travels from Hollywood to Dollywood, from Neverland to Middle Earth; he crashes a Kid Rock concert with a sixty-six-year-old fan, sprints after Mick Jagger with a professional autograph collector, gets the inside scoop from Mary Hart on covering Hollywood for Entertainment Tonight, visits the world's largest comic book convention with the hobbits from The Lord of the Rings, and discovers what fans look like from the perspective of celebrities-who, paradoxically, often seem to be among the most starstruck of us all. Sympathetic, funny, and endlessly curious about stars and fans alike, Gross gives us a winning portrait of how our dreams of fame shape our everyday lives.
Customer Reviews:
Honest, funny and brave.......2006-01-06
Gross doesn't just write about pop culture and the sometimes bizarre interactions between fans and stars, but he also has the guts to talk openly about his own experiences as a fan in an intelligent, honest and self-deprecating way.
I was especially struck by his account of how Gross planned to tell Dolly Parton a sad story about his mother and one of Parton's songs, and how it took him some time to recognize that his initial angry reaction to the cancellation of the interview was because of the loss of the chance to achieve some brief, false intimacy with a star via this story. I just wish all fans and writers could be that self-aware.
A thoughtful and entertaining mix of sociology, gossip, and memoir.......2005-09-06
Expecting to read an earnest, sober treatise on the nature of celebrity and individuality, I was surprised by the depth of my emotional reaction to Starstruck. Gross introduces elements of his own life into the narrative almost from the beginning of the book -- at first tangentially, then deftly weaving his story with those of the fans and stars whom he interviews. The climactic "scene" works on so many levels, I found myself wishing for a movie studio to option the book. Even as pure gossip Starstruck is a juicy read: I'll never look at Katie Couric quite the same way again. While I would have appreciated more on the history and sociology of our culture's fascination with celebrities, the book serves as a powerful, resonant, and personal meditation on what it means to be a fan.
A fascinating, personal probe of what makes fandom.......2005-09-04
What happens when a fan becomes obsessed with obtaining autographs of famous personalities? As a teen, author Michael Gross collected thousands of autographs by writing fan letters to politicians, actresses, and more. As an adult, he probes the world of celebrity admiration with a more researched eye in Starstruck: When A Fan Gets Close To Fame, examining everything from concerts and tabloid reporting to chasing stars for autographs. And Gross should know: he's one of the crowd. A fascinating, personal probe of what makes fandom.
Challenging, Important and FUN.......2005-04-19
Michael Gross' book Starstruck is an extraordinary compendium of not only his own experiences as a fan, but serves as a unique and important analysis of the world of celebrity. At a time when we are saturated with entertainment culture, Gross manages to lift back the veil on this unique late 20th century phenomenon to explore both the personal and the political consequences of our collective obsession with fame. From poignant and hilarious stories of his own crazy desire to be near the famous - his boyhood letters to Ronald Reagan are priceless - to his adult understanding of those who have dedicated their lives to famous people - Dolly Parton fans in particular - Gross's authorial voice is both critical and sympathetic at the same time. This book is original, engaging, and utterly compelling. A great read for those of us who flip through grocery market tabloids and those of us interested in a more serious look at cultural politics. Five stars!

"Lifestyles of the famous...and the dead.".......2002-12-27
When 17-year-old Miranda Peterson wins a magazine contest--along with two other girls: Kelly McCormick and Jo Brown--she's absolutely ecstatic. This is her big chance to meet Byron Slater, a popular actor who's allowing three young women to reside at his California estate for one week; and one lucky contest winner gets a part in his upcoming movie. However, when several near-death "accidents" befall Miranda and Byron--such as being poisoned, almost drowned, and nearly driven off a cliff--Miranda begins to have her doubts about staying with Byron, even though he's been incredibly attentive towards her, and even discloses an awful secret--that someone has been threatening him, possibly an obsessed fan.
There are a few parts in "Starstruck" that are a bit far-fetched; for example: Byron's immediate attraction to Miranda. I'm not saying Miranda couldn't attract someone like him, but it was very unlikely; and, besides, Miranda is a minor--something Byron should have kept in mind if he were so worried about bad press. I also didn't understand why Byron would invite her to stay in his house instead of the guesthouse with the other two girls--as well as why he would confide his fears to her about a dangerous stalker--when Miranda could possibly have been that person? Obviously she's not since she's the protagonist, but Byron's decision-making skills--among other things--seemed a little off to begin with. I won't give too much away, but at least one good thing about "Starstruck" is that Miranda hooks up with the guy I thought she should have done so with at the beginning of the book.
Amazing............2002-10-15
When Miranda gets the call from "On The Edge" magazine telling her that she's won a contest to stay at movie star Byron Slater's California house and get the chance to star in his next movie, she's thrilled. Byron Slater is the hottest topic of teen action-romances, and to be able to spend the week in his house is unbelievable! As soon as she arrives, she senses that Byron has taking a liking to her and he starts confiding in her. He tells her that he thinks that someone might be stalking him and he feels in danger. Then, the sickening "accidents" start. Or are they accidents at all?.....
I thought this book was great! Richie Tankersley Cusick weaved suspense and romance throughout the book just right. I'll probably end up agreeing with the other reviewers in saying that this wasn't the author's best. This was the first book I read by her, and, standing alone, it seems terrific. But, compared to her other books, it might not seem as good. I'll admit, though, that while the book was suspenseful, it was a little predictable and the killer was, too. Other than that, I loved it! Can't wait to read more by her!.....
Okay...I suppose.......2002-07-24
While I am forever a fan of Cusick's books, this one was a disappointment...
I had really hoped that this book would be good when I had bought it because I was under the impression that all, or most of her books, were outstanding. I had read Silent Stalker, Vampire, Fatal Secrets, and a few others before I picked up this book. These books were by far a few of her best, in my opinion and I was very anxious when I did bought this book. I couldn't wait to start it, but as I finished the book in a few hours, I wasn't completely satisfied...
Although the book in general was fine, the ending took me by complete surprise. Not because it was shocking and well thought out, but because it was so blatantly obvious and predictable -_-; I had suspected this character from the beginning and I was hoping that there would be some sort of twist because it seemed so obvious from the start of the events. I tried to convince myself that the ending would turn out as good as the rest of her books, but I was disappointed that everything that I had predicted actually happened.
Anyway, this is an okay book if you're reading one of Richie Tankersley Cusick's books for the first time, BUT if you're a devoted fan of her books, then you should avoid this book if you don't want to be disappointed. Although this book isn't her best, don't think that all of her books aren't good because many of her other books, such as Teacher's Pet, Vampire, Silent Stalker, Fatal Secrets, and The Mall are wonderful and have great plots and twist endings! ^_^
Staratruck.......2002-04-16
I read this book in the middle of a traveling basketball season...It's not the greatest idea when I have to play in 5 minutes and I just can't set the book down. I loved how it always kept me on my toes. The end was an awesome surprise. I loved it!
Starstruck.......2001-02-22
Starstruck was a good book. It was a little boring at times but other then that i liked how she made the killer someone that you would never expect. It was suspenceful and a bit misleading. which is a good thing for a mystery book. I can hardly wait to read more books by this author.

"Starstruck unexpectedly celebrates the beauty of the amateur-one whose vocation is not driven by a hunger for money, but by love. The book is a breath of fresh air."-Warren Beatty
"â¦wildly entertainingâ¦An obligatory purchase for all pop culture collections."-Library Journal
This pop culture classic unearths candid photos of the most famous superstars of the 60s and 70s alongside forgotten and cult personalities, captured through the lens of a monumentally obsessed fan. Gary Boas' tales of his interactions with the stars add to this fascinating document of a bygone era.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Collection of a Fan's Candid Photography .......2004-09-22
This book is one of the most touching things I have ever read about what it's like to be a show business fan. Gary Lee Boas has taken thousands of snapshots of celebrities from Ronald Reagan to Tina Turner, Lynn Fontanne to Loretta Lynn - most of the time taking just one or two pictures at a time!! This is an amazing story about his hobby that anybody who ever had a crush on a movie star or made a celebrity scrapbook, collected memorabilia or even just had a favorite actor will probably see a bit of themselves. As pointed out in the foreward, this was an innocent era, the 60's and 70's (and a few from the early 80's), when stars were much more approachable although it could be argued since most of those pictured here were a bit past their glory days they were perhaps more within reach than had they been box office superstars at the time (although a few here were really big at the time of the photos). From porn stars to Miss Americas, Hollywood icons to commercial pitchmen, Boas discriminated not a bit and took pictures of them all. There are also some moving stories of some of the encounters along the way; Richard Nixon seemingly eager for the company, Hedy Lamarr startled that anyone would recognize her, Elizabeth Montgomery stumbling upon her father's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and asking Gary to take a picture of her with it and send it to her. It does seem though that the publishers deliberately went for the "amateur photo" look and chose many pictures somewhat out of focus, red eyes, and/or wind-blown hair. The dozens of mini pix unidentified on the front and back end pages suggest he had a better average at taking good pictures than the bigger shots in the book would have you believe. It's a one of a kind collection and thanks to Gary the world can see it now.
Amazing.......2003-07-24
The breadth of what Boas has done is unmatched, especially in that his quest to photograph stars in the 1970s was earnestly as a fan and not a sa memorabilia dealer. His anecdotes are wonderfully written and occasionally insightful, he should just do a whole book of them.
You're going to love it!.......2002-08-10
Being a star struck fan myself, having taken many photos of my favorites, and having had the good fortune to have my photo taken with many of my favorite stars, many of whom are deceased, I found Gary's book fascinating. It brought back memories and having known Gary personally since 1975, I can vouch for the fact that he is a true, loyal and devoted fan. He and I spent countless hours waiting for favorites including Kate Hepburn when she appeared in Philadelphia theater. Having done so myself, I appreciate all the hours, pleasure and work that Gary put into compiling the photos which grace this book. Celebrity photography can be exciting but also tiring, especially the long hours spent waiting around. Sometimes the bitter winter weather can be a deterrent but even then the fun never goes out of it. So, if you are someone who appreciates the arts and deep down inside harbors dreams of becoming a famous actor, singer, dancer or musician, etc. but the closest you ever came to your dream was meeting the stars, this book is for you. Also, if you are starstruck but never had the time or geographical proximity to see the stars in person, this book is for you, too. Anyway, to all enjoy.
Inspirational!.......2002-01-09
Mr. Boas has taken entertainment history and captured it within the pages of this book. It is truly inspirational for those working towards a career in professional acting as well as the actors themselves. The photos contained within bring back memories for all, I recommend it to all looking to gain an insight into entertainments most viable celebrities, actors, hosts and models!!!

Major Comic Book from the '80s.......2004-07-06
This comic book series was first serialized in "Heavy Metal" magazine, then collected (here) as a Marvel graphic novel -- and then continued forward as a Marvel Epic Comics limited run series and later picked up by Dark Horse comics. It's a far-future story with a large cast, nominally centered around the adventures of ex-Space Marine Brucilla the Muscle and interstellar amazon Galatia-9 (the two together being a kind of space-travelling, feminist Fafhrd and Gray Mouser), but with a large number of intersecting plotlines and additional characters. The tone of the story is deeply ironic, with a huge amount of wit and intelligence keeping its energy-level high. My overall impression is that this comic book represents a *major* culmination of lessons learned from the feminist movement of the 70s and the postmodern pastiche-aesthetic of the 70s and 80s. You won't find a smarter comic book than this.
I was in high school when I first came across chapters of "Starstruck" in "Heavy Metal". I was immediately attracted to the delicate and intricate art nouveau / Moebius style of Michael Kaluta, and the quietly ironic, cryptic, and funny writing of Elaine Lee. When the entire series was anthologized by Marvel and I got to read the whole thing, I fell in love. The story unfolded like a mysterious puzzle putting itself slowly together before my eyes. The story seemed like a weird amalgamation of Thomas Pynchon and the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," or the feminist science fiction of Joanna Russ and Samuel R. Delany. Although the various threads of the storyline in the graphic novel remain diffuse and unresolved (which I had no problem with, as there was too much else going on of interest to worry too much about resolution) it was fun to proceed to the Marvel Epic Comics series, where the plot threads knotted together quite tightly, with most of the major action taking place on Rec Station 97, a kind of interstellar mega-mall.
To this day, "Starstruck" remains a key comic book for me -- the platinum standard by which I measure all other comic book writing and art. I sincerely hope all the various installments of the series are collected some day under one cover. I'll buy ten copies -- two for me and the rest to pass on to friends.
A wonderful, wonderful comic.
Killer.......1999-07-01
This is my favorite book, graphic or otherwise. It's funny, witty, and passes its story under the table with a knowing nod, hinting at its place in a vast universe, not spoon-feeding every detail as if all the players were automated agents of a narrative. This is Shaksper in outer-space (if he survived a bit better) -- a bit of fluff with enlightened commentary on the human condition at its core. Thanks, Elaine.
