5 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2005-03-11

It's about time someone with some real sense wrote a book that celebrates people with flesh on their bones. I am trully disgusted by images of overly thin bodies that look like they came from a concentration camp. Women, such as Marilyn Monroe - the epitome of beauty and sensuality, would be considered obese in today's environment. Women and men shouldn't go around trying to staple their stomachs or whatever in order to look unnaturally thin. Thanks to Cheri Erdman for writing this book so that people who live in large bodies feel like they have the right to take up space in the world...A lotta space.

2 out of 5 stars Superficial and repetitive.......2002-11-27

A complex topic (fatness and size acceptance) is presented with a one-sided perspective, and worse, the book is boring. While some of these "facts" might be new to a few readers, mostly this is a rehashing of old data combined with her qualitative research and personal experiences. Every chapter ends with tips, and they all sound very similar. The chapter on the spiral of acceptance sounds very similar to the Stages of Change presented in the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change, but her suggestions for how to go through the processes are, again, very simplistic.

The idea that some weight loss for health can be appropriate is an anathema in this book.

Maybe an o.k. introduction, but if you are the least bit familiar with size acceptance, read elsewhere. (The best part of the book is it's cover.)

5 out of 5 stars This book was a revelation to me........2002-05-16

I read this book very slowly over the course of a year. I'd put it down from time to time because the ideas it contained were so radical that it took me a long time to absorb them. This book has had a major and lasting impact on my life and on my relationship with my body. It started me on my own spiral of acceptance and introduced me to a whole new way of thinking about my body, about food, about exercise, about my place in the world. I highly recommend this book to any woman who has ever hated her body. The ideas in this book will bring peace, enlightenment, and healing. I wish you a joyful journey.
--Mary Ray Worley

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best of its kind.......2002-01-14

In a culture that daily screams the message to us that thin is in and fat is out, any book that challenges the prevailing cultural attitudes towards size and discrimination deserves praise. A book such as this requires both author and reader to put themselves out there, open their minds and prepare to be challenged, and I have the utmost respect for Cheri Erdman and the trials she has endured throughout her life which have enabled her to write this book. I fundamentally agree with everything she says: that we should stop dieting and regarding food as an enemy; that we should exercise for pleasure, not for the purpose of weight loss; that everyone, regardless of their size or shape, deserves love and respect; and that we shouldn't wait to be thin before we start enjoying life.

Having said that, I give this book only three stars for two reasons. Firstly, I found it to be a bit repetitive, especially towards the end. A couple of times it was if she had made all the points she wanted to and had run out of things to say, so she said it all again, in almost exactly the same way. It loses a second star for the fact that, as brave as her story is, I feel I have read most of what she says before. There are now many books that deal with the topic of fat-acceptance and body image, several of them far more accessible and entertaining to read than this one. Writers such as Marilyn Wann (FAT!SO?), Kaz Cooke (Real Gorgeous) and Camryn Manheim (Wake Up, I'm Fat!) bring more personality to their work, and I would recommend them above this one. Nonetheless, if neither of my objections seem important to you, this is still a well-written, well-researched, informative and necessary book.

5 out of 5 stars Positive, helpful, and sane.......1998-09-15

It's a sad commentary on American women that, at a time when a new diet book is published practically every day, and that sloppy exercise in anti-fat bias "The Fat of the Land" is a best-seller, this book has gone out of print!
As someone who spent much of her adult life fighting a "weight problem" that didn't exist in the first place, I only wish this book had been around when *I* was a teenager. Erdman's recommendations are right on, and I won through to those same attitudes only after many years of self-hatred, self-punitive behavior, and "conditional living" ("When I lose 30 lbs, I'll take yoga ... buy some really good-looking clothes ... find a better job ... "). I heartily recommend the book to any woman who thinks her weight precludes her from doing what she really wants in life -- and to her significant other who doesn't understand what she's going through.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing to Lose.......2007-06-16

This was a really great book.

Twelve years ago in Nazareth, New Mexico a family was brutally slain. The only survivor was one son, Deke Call. And at the same time Deke's mother went missing.
The man that was arrested for the murder was a drifter and he killed hisself in his cell.
After 12 years, Deke Call comes home to find answers to the murders and what happened to his Mother.
Also there is a new woman in town, Anna Sandoval. She is writing a book about the call murders.
Anna and Deke are attracted to each other, but they both have secrets from their past that could distroy and kind of relationship.
Someone is shooting and messing with Deke's Uncles's ranch. And someone is trying to kill or scare Anna off.
Then the unspeakable happens again in the house that Deke grew up on. The Father and son of the family are killed and the wife is missing.
Coincidence? Or is the real killer back?

This book was so fast paced that it was hard to put it down. Even though I figured out the killer early in the book, the ending was still good.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic Suspense.......2006-08-14

Anna Sandoval has come to the small town of Nazareth, New Mexico with her own agenda. She is a reporter from D C but she has a secret tie to this town. Feeling safe in her ananimoity she is investigateing the death, of the Call family. A triple murder that happened twelve years ago. At least a double murder, the mother was never found. A suspect was arrested and he committed suicide in the local jail. However, Anna knows more than she is telling and she knows that he was not the murder.

Deacon Call is a bad boy cop with burn out. HE is also the only surivor of the CAll family, he was not at home when the murders happened. Deke has returned home to try to find his way out of the misery and pain from his last undercover operation. He must find his way out of the bottle and back into a life he isnt sure he wants. When he finds out Anna is questioning others about the murder he is incensed. Then another murder exactly like the one that took his family happens in the same house.

Maybe he doesn't want to live anymore but he can't go until he has resolved the freak murders, in case they are connected to his family. Anna and Deke are finally forced by the deep attraction between them to join forces. Deke's Uncle is being attacked in the dark of night and now he has been shot. What is going on?

Absolutely great, had me from the first page and took me on a long ride. I hated for it to end. Wish there were more authors out there who can give me such a great treat. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2006-11-05

This book is wonderfully expressed. It tells about the challenges of abusive relationships and their effects on their family members. Even though it is based on a true story, don't be deceived. This book has tons of drama, action, and some romance. I think it is a must read book!

5 out of 5 stars What choices do any of us really have?.......2006-07-02

Nothing to Lose is an incredibly heart-wrenching book because of the very strong story and believable protagonist, but also because of the all-too-true story of abuse that could have been ripped from the headlines of any newspaper across the world. Michael Daye has been on the run for a year, traveling with a carnival, but now he's back in his hometown of Miami, hoping not to be recognized for who he really is: the son of Lisa Monroe, currently on trial for the murder of her husband.

Walker, Michael's now-dead stepfather, was a horribly abusive man. As the book unfolds and every other chapter takes you back a year to when the trouble first really started (though I suppose you could argue it really started when Lisa first began dating Walker), you see that Michael did everything within his power to get his mother to leave. But, like many abused women, she didn't feel capable of it and stayed.

For the first time, he felt like he had an option other than just watching his mother get beaten by Walker. Kirstie, a carny, makes him realize that sometimes there really is nothing you can do. People have to want to help themselves. Michael finally gave up completely after `outing' Walker to an Emergency Room nurse and having his mother once again deny the abuse. He decided to leave everything behind and create a new life with Kirstie and the carnies.

But what really happened the night Walker died? Can Michael help his mother now? Will she accept his help or will her guilt hold her back? There are many questions and Alex Flinn masterfully twines everything together to come up with an effective and engrossing ending (though some may guess the truth early on, it is so well done you won't mind at all).

I recommend this book for readers aged 12 and up. There are some sexual situations (none graphic and none gratuitous) and some painful abuse/fighting scenes, so do keep that in mind. What I'd really like to do is recommend this to women suffering under domestic violence. This book very clearly shows how abuse challenges and changes every member of the household.

If you or someone you love is in such a situation - don't hesitate. Get help. Your local phone book will have listings for local organizations and the Internet also offers help. Just search for "domestic violence" or similar terms.

5 out of 5 stars A lesson learned.......2006-01-27

"At some point, when you give up everything, there is nothing left to worry about."
Most carny's lives model this quote, as does Kristie's, one of the main characters who has been in this carnival tour for years. They have nothing to lose. As for Michael, also a main character, who ran away from his troubled homelife to join Kristie in the tour, he's already lost. He's hiding from a secret past only to see it resurface to face him head-on with the world now watching.
This is a great book with even better morals. I reccommend reading Nothing To Lose for adventure, mystery, romance, and a twist ending. It leaves you asking questions throughout the entire book; and thereon after.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing to lose.......2005-11-19

Nothing to lose is a great book. This book is about a family that's dad left them when the boy (Michael) was young. Michaels mom re maired later to a man named walker. It turns out to be abusive. Michael could not stand walker abusing his mom. Walker was killed and Michael ran away with the curious. One year later Michael came back. He wanted to help his mom out in the murder trial...
Michael and his friend when to the carnival and Michael meat Kristy the "the whack amole girl", they became very good friends. Another one of my favorite parts is when Michael gets to talk to Kristy after a very long time. Kristy helps Michael through a hard decision. Last but not least Michaels was a great football player. But when he ran away he had to quit it. Then when all this was over he went back to school and made the team.
I loved this book; it was a great murder mystery. I think that most people would love it to. I can't think of anything that I did not like this book. But I just gave you three reasons why I did. But there are so many more reasons to love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from Alex Flinn.......2005-09-02

This story is structured well, told in alternating passages from the present time and from the events of a year ago in narrator Michael's life. The two time periods converge beautifully at the end, as we learn the whole story about the night that Michael's abuse stepfather was murdered in his house. The end is slightly predictable, but the journey is still enjoyable, as Michael deals with anger, guilt, choices between right and wrong, and a basic struggle to survive.

This book has a good male protagonist, and it should appeal to teen readers of both genders. Michael is a tough guy, a football player, who realizes he has no true friends to confide in about the hell that his homelife is. He makes an unlikely friend throughout the course of the book, and there's a good lesson about finding your true friends in here.

Breathing Underwater is an earlier, and even better, YA novel from Flinn that comes highly recommended.

White-hot firefighter romantic suspense from an award-winning author.

Three years after the World Trade Center attacks left him paralyzed from the waist down, firefighter Ian Woodward fights to forge a future with someone from his past--a woman who needs him more than ever.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-03-22

I thought this book was geat! It was set in a school setting with issues that face teachers and kids everyday. The characters were also well developed. I really enjoyed this book.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing More To Lose.......2005-03-05

Inwardly and externally, Ian Woodward bears deep wounds. Though he feels useless, others disagree, and on the strength of their faith, this paraplegic young man who no longer can fight fires agrees to teach others how to be what he still is, the best. Then, the wounds on his heart are reopened when Lisel Loring returns to town. The young actress ostensibly is coming home to recover from an illness, but truthfully, she is fleeing a stalker. That's where Rick Ruscio comes in; seeking to remake his life after blackmail forced him to be a traitor, the ex cop hopes to find a measure of redemption or at least pay the bills by protecting Lisel. Yet just as much as Lisel believes in Ian, Faith McPherson believes in Rick.

*** These four lives intertwine and draw strength from one another across the pages of another moving novel from an author who is a sure bet for a good read at least 99 percent of the time. However, danger lurks just outside their circle, waiting for a chance to break them apart. ***

5 out of 5 stars The best yet.......2005-02-09

Once in awhile a book grabs you so much that you can't think of anything else. You want to finish it because it's so good, yet if you do the characters will be out of your life. This book is an amazing story for anyone who has been touched by the 9/11 tragedy and how life is too precious to waste. Ian and Lisel's story draws you in while the sub-plot with Rick and Faith makes you believe in both love and second chances. Characters from Shay's last books make an appearance and it's like bringing back family for a reunion. The book can stand on it's own, but read all three in order. This one, however, is the most amazing and heart-warming.

5 out of 5 stars superb romantic suspense thriller.......2005-01-26

Firefighter Ian Woodward was a first responder to the Twin Towers tragedy. While many of his brothers and sisters died on 9/11, he lived but lost the use of his legs and had to learn activities for daily living. Two years later, the wheelchair bound Ian visited his sister in Hidden Cove, New York; he met and formed a friendship with actress Lisel Loring, but when she wanted to take it to a more loving level he withdrew feeling inadequate to be her lover.

A year after fleeing from Lisel, Ian wonders what he has to live for although he enjoys teaching at Hidden Cove Academy. Lisel returns to Hidden Cove, but an out of control fan stalks her. She has hired disgraced former police officer Rick Ruscio to protect her. Rick is doing community services at a preschool as part of his conviction. There he meets teacher Faith McPherson, whose lust for life consumes him although he feels inadequate to be worthy of her love. As the danger from the stalker mounts these stubborn dumb males do not yet comprehend the strength of the females who love them.

The Hidden Cove tales continue to provide superb romantic suspense thrillers while paying homage to firefighters. The current tale is terrific as Kathryn Shay employs multiple story lines tied together by Lisle and favorites from previous books return. Readers will cry for Ian, yet Ms. Shay does not paint a tearjerker or provoke pity tears for him. NOTHING MORE TO LOSE is a strong entry in one of the best running collections on the market today.

Book Description

This new book charts the maverick career of one of rock's most exciting stars.

Dave Grohl, frontman for the Foo Fighters, will always be remembered as the drummer for Nirvana—a band that occupied the cultural consciousness in a way that few others ever have. This book looks at Grohl's career to date, placing the singer/guitarist/drummer in the context of his contemporaries and those who have influenced him. It covers all the recordings—from the monumental "Nevermind," which rocketed Nirvana to superstardom, to the Foo Fighters' million-selling album "One by One," and its Grammy-winning single, "All My Life." Finally, he looks at the lawsuit initiated by Kurt Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, and Grohl's emergence as the touring drummer for underground hard-rock outfit Queens of the Stone Age.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Lack of respect for an immensely superior author.......2004-04-26

When I first read the first chapter in this book I felt that the series had potential. It had an interesting story, pretty good characterization, excellent art and a bit of humor. I figured that I would have enjoyed the following chapters just as much, if not more.

I was wrong. I was DREADFULLY wrong.

In the second chapter of this book, Captain Marvel decides to "enlighten" one of the greatest and most multi-dimensional characters to appear in any form of literature: Frank Castle, the Punisher.

The Punisher had been bogged down for years with bad series that offered nothing more than disgusting mischaracterization. For example, the Punisher used ridiculous weapons such as "laser blasters," had a partner called "Microchip," spoke in incessant drivel such as "I must protect the innocent," and entered logs into a "War Journal." All of this changed for the better when Garth Ennis, author of Preacher, -- which is a highly praised series in all of the entertainment industry -- took control of the character in 2000 and turned him from (for lack of better words) lame and stupid to one of the all-time greats in comic book history, which culminated in the best miniseries of 2003: "Born." One would figure that any author who would use the Punisher would pay respect to Ennis' hard work by actually READING what he had written; after all, it wasn't easy turning someone into gold when they were widely considered nothing more than a laughable excuse of a character.

But thus, sadly, is not the case for Peter David. In the second chapter in this Captain Marvel series, David obviously ignored every contribution Ennis made to Frank Castle because everything that made the character stupid -- such as the aforementioned examples in the above paragraph -- were more than present in this pathetic excuse for writing. Shame on Peter David for ignoring the greatness that is Garth Ennis. I wouldn't complain so much if it was not for the fact that Punisher is now considered Garth's character and David did not pay Mr. Ennis and his character the proper respect they deserve.

If I hate this blatant disregard of writing talent, why did I give this book a two-star rating? Well, the answer is simple: The art is very appealing. However, despite the fact that the artist's work is excellent, it is overshadowed by the crap that David whips out with his "writing." (...)

3 out of 5 stars Too light-hearted to be much good..........2004-01-27

I love the original Captain Marvel. Especially the Jim Starlin stories (available in "The Life & Death of Captain Marvel" TPB). There is a sense of the writer taking the stories a little too seriously - they are usually overwritten, overblown, pseudo-Shakespearean, outrageous and quirky... but they work! There is an overall appeal to the 1970s stories that are missing from today's comics.

Here, we have Peter David, fresh off his decade-long stint on the Hulk, attempting to write about the heir to the Captain Marvel legacy - Genis (who is again merged with Rick Jones just like his daddy was). This series is an offshoot from the excellent "Avengers Forever" maxi-series by Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco. I read that first and immediately followed that with this volume. The change in tone is striking! While Busiek tried his best to write in the "classic" Marvel style reminiscent of Steve Englehart and Jim Shooter, Peter David is more a "modern" Marvel writer (though still staying short of the self-important, no-continuity Nu-Marvel or Ultimate-Marvel these days). He throws in pop-references left and right and overwrites the humour in this book. That is the main difference between the humour in the past and the humour today. In the past, you laugh because the concepts are genuinely silly but still takes itself seriously. Today's writers (like Peter David here) points at the silliness and then proceeds to tell you that you are reading something very silly... thus killing much of the appeal of the character and stories.

However, having said all that, I did enjoy this volume quite a lot. And that probably has more to do with my love for the characters Rick Jones and Moondragon than with the quality of the writing. Drax the Destroyer, a grim fighting-machine from the 1970s Starlin stories is shown here as no more than a silly, whiny buffoon - totally out-of-character. The stories are generally light-hearted and easy-reading. I was told that there is more depth in the latter stories following this volume but I wouldn't know because I haven't read them.

The highlight of this volume, however, is the art. Chriscross is a genuinely innovative and expressive artist. And his style blends in very well with Peter David's writing. Then there is the fill-in issue drawn by Ron Lim, the legendary cosmic-artist (Silver Surfer, Infinity Gauntlet, etc.). After having him on the title, you wish he'll stay on forever.

3 out of 5 stars Out of this World... and out of touch with reality.......2003-09-27

When Peter David began writing this story, the word was out that there would be a competition on what character is going to stay for the long haul. You see Captain Marvel's sales were sliding down near the pit of cancellation when Marvel in all its wisdom decided to test the readers' love and loyalty to the character. There would be three Captain Marvel books, having completely differenct charcaters in them with different premises. That would continue for some months and the better series written by the author would continue. The book by Peter David was the one that showcased the original series and characters. That of Captain Marvel, the son of Mar-Vell, and also that of Rick Jones, sidekick supreme.

What you get is a whacky ride that is uninspired fromthe beginning to the end. It would seem that David was out to explain a certain philosophy he had in his head about what would happen to a person when they get the powers and knowledge of a god. Basically, you'd go crazy and that's why we mere mortals are only that, humans. The first series that David spat out was excellent. You had equal time that covered both Captain Marvel or Genis and that of Rick Jones. Now Jones is made to be that helpless little background buzz after a night of binge drinking on Friday night.

The art is Outstanding. Chriscross is amazing with his pencils and knows that he has got to save this book from the annihilation of the plot that it was leaning towards. The book had such high potential and was very much grounded. Now it was all about this certain philosophy that David lives where he seems to be lashing out at the powers that be in Marvel. First he was booted out of the HULK after an unforgettable run. Now, I think Captain Marvel is out the door and Peter David just has nothing to lose. In the end, I think he does get the last laugh!

5 out of 5 stars Comes outta left field and wins the game..............2003-08-25

Here's what this book is about: a superhero named Captain Marvel is granted an ability called "cosmic awareness", and goes insane.

At least, that's what most people would tell you. In my opinion, Captain Marvel does very logical things with his gift, things I would do in his place. But I'm getting off the subject........... suffice to say, this is a really well-written story, with solid, consistent, appropriate art and an awe-inspiring balance between the somewhat sarcastic view of the bystander (the guy sharing Captain Marv's head) and moments and scenes that have genuine emotional impact with the reader. Good stuff!!!!! Read it, comics fan!

5 out of 5 stars About as good as it gets!.......2003-07-02

If you think of a comic book you may think of Superman or Batman, maybe even the X-Men. This story is about a superhero (if you can call him that) who most people have not heard of. That dosent matter at all. This is one of the best comic book stories I've ever read (and I've read quite a few, Watchmen and Sandman series) The art is amazing and tells the story brilliantly. The writing is even better!

For an idea of how the story is, imagine that suddenly you became God, you could see how everything is in the entire universe and then you could see how everything effects everything else, then you could see how those things turned out, but you still had the same mind. Would you go crazy?

Read this book and you will see! Truly an excellent story!
