Customer Reviews:
GREAT book for beginners.......2007-10-08
this is a really good book for beginners teaches you how to make your own spell and all of the sorts.in the beginning he gives his own veiws on the dark side and allow anyone who's competent to understand it better...
A Gothic Silver RavenWolf.......2006-11-10
This book is a laugh and not much else. This guy is the uberpale, black-eyeliner-wearing, black-hair-dying version of Silver RavenWolf: cheesy, full of himself and completely useless.
Aside from that, the idea of nocturnal witchcraft is highly impractical. Yes, a lot of us are night people and work better at night. But this guy is practically suggesting a WORSHIP of the night, like some sort of Wiccan vampire or something.
Don't waste your money or time on this book. You have better things to do at night, like REAL witchcraft, or even sleep!
Enlightening.......2006-05-29
Although most people have a misconception of witchcraft, it is only because they hate and fear what they do not understand. This book explains everything very well, and is easy to relate to if you are more of a "night" person that feels more empowered by the night. I related to this book so well because he makes references about his life habits and interests that seemed to be similar to my own.
Pseudo-religionism.......2006-02-11
I knocked this book from someone that ordered it, but got to the store after me :-). I made the mistake to buy the book by the sound of its title. And author. I fell for it this time..... It is not the first Konstantinos text I buy and must say, this one helped me make up my mind. It seems highly obvious that the author is abusing the commercial value of the "black arts" to get to the spectrum of rebellious teenagers that would "sell their soul" just to make a statement at large. Well well, if that aren't following the routes of the christian church we so dire to critisize.... The practical aspects are not well thought through and I suspect, just as unknown to the author as to the guys that made the front page. Practise is either made as difficult as possible, or serves as an example of the inability of the author to explain some basic concepts. It does show that the author is jack of all trades, but master of none. I would advise readers that are seriously interested in the topic to acquire the texts of Frater U.D., which I find much more fascinating, as well as educational. I would therefore advise this text for any pseudo-black-art-wannabe with little interest in the occult.
Quality Work.......2005-08-31
with all the flower and crystal type new age books on the market claiming to "know" the truth about magick it is nice to see a book that takes a realistic look at an often misunderstood faith. now this is not to say that nocturnal magick is more or less than any other legitimate forms of goddess/god worship merely this book is a perfectly written overview of one aspect of the religion. Konstantinos is an excellent writer who manages to get into the history and logistical aspects of night time magick without it reading like a shopping list or sounding like a 101 course. a perfect book for those who wish to learn something not extracted from ignorant 30-second soundbytes on the evening news, a must read and highly recommended.

Book Description
Exploring the mystery, wisdom, and power of the dark phase of the moon's cycle--a lunar-based model for moving through the dark times in our lives with understanding, consciousness, and faith in renewal.
The moon's dark phase has traditionally been a time of fear and superstition, a time associated with death and isolation. The mythical embodiment of these fears is the Dark Goddess. Known around the world by many names--Lilith, Kali, Hecate, and Morgana--the archetypal Dark Goddess represents death, sexuality, and the unconscious--the little understood, often feared aspects of life.
Demetra George combines psychological, mythical, and spiritual perspective on the shadowy, feminine symbolism of the dark moon to reclaim the darkness from oppressive, fear-based images. George offers rites for rebirth and transformation that teach us to tap into the power of our dark times, maximizing the potential for renewal inherent in our inevitable periods of loss, depression, and anger.

Mysteries Of The Dark Moon.......2007-05-13
I was and am very pleased with this book.. It is well written with thouhtful insights. The history of the rise and fall of the Goddess with it reference to the Lunar Cycles really gives insight to where our world is heading today into this next century... Demtra George did a greyt job compacting a lot of information into an easy to read and understand book... It has been very helpful to me and given me much to meditate on... Anyone interested in learning about or Following the path of the Dark Goddess will love this book..

Amazing..........2004-12-11
That such a simple, unpretentious book could be so healing. This book helped me to live through the mysterious, dark cycles of my life and emerge into new life with health and vigor and new love.
The fact that I remember the lessons so many years later is quite a testament.
Innacurate mythology, revisionist history.......2003-11-10
While Ms. George does have some useful things to say about dark moon mysteries, it would be more interesting and engaging (and less likely to have readers throwing the book against the wall) if she did not use revisionist history and inaccurate mythology to support her conclusions. I can think of better books on the subject.
This Book is a Great Resource........2003-02-07
I bought this book 7 years ago, and have referred to it time and time again. I teach Intuition classes. Part of what I teach includes understanding natural life cycles. I use Demetra George's book to show my students all the aspects of a moon cycle and to remind them that all parts of the cycle, including the time of the Void (Dark Moon) are important in life. This book also provides excellent information about the Goddess Hecate, the old wise women who helps us in the night. George's book is very empowering for women and attaches the female spirit to ancient women's knowledge before it was changed and distorted by conflicting religions and societal influences. I recommend this book.
term paper.......2003-01-30
I bought this book after reading all the glowing reviews. It read like a term paper to me. It describes a number of myths in a more or less engaging style, and incorporates a very interesting section on the overlap of astrological, historical, and cosmic lunar cycles, but the author fails to get past description to insight and meaning. She cycles around to the same two or three conclusions about the three part goddess and patriarchy, again and again, without ever saying anything I haven't heard elsewhere. There is, however, an extensive biography of her sources, which should make a good reading list.

Book Description
Take a thrilling walk on the dark side with Konstantinos! The author of Nocturnal Witchcraft presents a collection of magickal techniques for working with dark forces. Developed and tested by Konstantinos, these rites and rituals have proven to be quite powerful in harnessing nocturnal energies-even helping the author overcome a serious medical condition in a miraculous recovery that shocked doctors!
Drawn from diverse sources-ceremonial magick, folk magick, ancient Greek ritual, and divination-these techniques enable magicians and novices to conjure and control primal energies, thoughtforms, Lovecraftian entities, egregores, sigils, and other forces. Those attracted to the dark mysteries will relish Konstantinos' bold exploration of sex magick, death magick, altered states, dream grimoires, and forbidden tomes.
Customer Reviews:
Good on the darker aspects of conventional imagination.......2007-07-22
This book is good on the darker aspects of conventional imagination - what most people think the occult to be - but it misses the point.
Sure, drugs can be a shortcut behind the veil, but the experience isn't lasting, and is quite dangerous for a good percentage of the population, especially when undertaken alone.
This book is a lot of things - if you want to imagine occultism as being easy - like it is in the movies - ok, but this book in not for a serious occultist. They will find it laughable.
Fun Transgressive Magic You Can Do At Home.......2007-06-28
Konstantinos certainly seems to have decided that goth atmosphere is more potent for him, personally, than the trappings of traditional magick. He makes some remarkable claims in this little personal grimoire, including powerful personal healing resulting from the techniques he suggests. I see no theoretical reason why this might not have happened, and big results often lead magicians to publish the strange stuff that they did to get there. That's what this seems to be, if Konstantinos is telling the truth.
The book consists of a series of exercises that draw on classic motifs of dangerous or evil occultism - drugs, demons, sex with corpses, etc. In each case we are taught how to imitate some of the atmosphere of those experiences in ways that are, relatively, safe and sane. Of course, the author takes pains to explain why these things are just edgy, not evil - and the instructions are careful to avoid harm.
An effort is made to present entirely new framing rituals, openings and closings that replace 'circle castings' or other temple openings. I think the author sacrifices the baby with the bathwater here, presenting things that are simply not as cool or useful as traditional rites.
Personally, I'm too much of a Lovecraft fan to take Necronomicon occultism at all seriously, though the author explores the idea of the Dream Grimoire nicely. Some time is spent in a simple overview of early 20th century german occultism, and a fairly cool electro-occult rite is offered.
If you dig the notion of the Black Arts, and already have a solid ritual system that you can work in, you might find some inspiration in the Nocturnicon.
Shoveling the old B.S........2007-03-09
If rites, ritual, prayers, incantations, and suchlike actually had any power to"alter reality",everyone-and I do mean everyone-would have everything he/she wanted...The world would be filled with people whose health was great, whose cares were zero, and whose lives were wish fulfilment personified...
Take a look around you now,and with your eyes open...Where do you see such a world, populated by such people?YOU DON'T!
This book, and all of the others like it,are written so that the authors might profit,as well as the publishing houses...And if one is interested in "gothic"styled fiction(and that is fiction with a capital F)then "Nocturnicon"or any of the hundreds of other bogus grimories that are published yearly will suffice...if,on the other hand, you are looking for some sort of an UNREALISTIC panacea, something that will involve a few chants, some sweet smoke, and ,presto!,you have regained your health,or have won the lottery,or have found your"soul mate",then keep dreaming...
"Nocturnicon"presumes that you are weak-headed enough to believe that because you want something enough, and you have a strong imagination, and are willing to follow the directions in this book, you can actually "change"reality or bend it to your will...Now I will be the first to admit that changing reality is easy,in the commonsense aspect..Everyday we make choices, and these choices ,those made and those not made, constitute our reality...Certain things, however, will not be changed just because we want it so,or think that our will is strong enough to make it so...This book, and all of the others like it,tap into that audience out there who will not accept reality as it is,and instead presumes that he/she can change it to his/her will and design,if ONLY the proper spells are cast,if only the right "spirit"is called upon,if only the right incantations are uttered...If this is you, then buy this book..if,on the other hand, you understand that, despite what we may want,or even need, there are limitations to what we can do,and that many aspects of this world are just not amendable to the sort of changes we might wish...if this is you don't bother with this book...
Life Changing.......2006-10-06
To anyone out there book bashing: feel free to ef off. This book is REAL magic, and REAL scary. You will get results if you use the methods in this book with an open mind. If you walk away from the ritual with "I knew it wouldn't work," then you don't yet qualify for having an open mind, FYI. This book has made me afraid of the dark again. Life will never be the same now that I know what is actually out there. This is not Luciferian worship, it's non secular magic that uses dark forces opposed to other types available.
Either grab this book and conquer the night, or turn away without words, because you know not what you speak of. If you'd like to remain in the world of normalcy and live without fear and the 6th sense that this tomb will awaken, don't touch this; it will damage you.
Sweet, sweet reading for all us nocturnal creatures .......2006-01-28
New York-based occult author Konstantinos (and yes, that is his real name) is a famous name within the darker aspects of the occult. Over the years he's published a total of six books with Llewellyn - books that are all aimed at and written for Nightkind; that is, creatures of the night, people with a somewhat darker (but not necessary evil) view of magickal workings and who prefer the darkness of the night to the light of the day. He's also written numerous articles and appeared on many different TV-shows. In other words, he knows what he's talking about.
And in Nocturnicon he talks about magick being done at night. As with other books of the same category (not necessarily about darker aspects of the occult, but definitely about magick), this is not a book written in an attempt to convince skeptics that magick does indeed work. And it's not some sort of summary about the history of magick and the occult, even though historical references does pop up from time to time. No, this is instead a manual for the believer, a tool that you can use to summon the dark forces that are hidden somewhere in the dark and the infinite universe that surrounds this planet of ours.
Many books about magick contain rituals that are very difficult to do, demands years and years of practice, and include accessories that aren't always very easy to find. Nocturnicon is, however, nothing like that. The rituals and exercises described here are easy to do, don't require any bizarre and impossible demands of preparation, and if you do them correct you'll see the results in no time. Konstantinos is an honest author. He discusses how the use of absinthe (not the legal stuff but rather the old, traditional version) can affect the imagination in great ways, he doesn't deny that illegal substances that help in opening up new aspects of your consciousness, and sex magick isn't too taboo to write about.
Still, please note that it's NOT a "pro-drugs book" or kinky anthology about sleazy sex. Far from it.
If you're a diehard skeptic who doesn't believe in anything that has to do with the occult and magick, then Nocturnicon is probably one of the worst books you'll ever buy. However, if you're open to new possibilities and perhaps even feel instinctively that the darkness of the night affects you in a very special way, then there's really no reason for why you shouldn't run as fast as you can to your nearest bookstore and get a copy of Konstantino's latest work.
He actually succeeds in being amusing, thorough, controversial, funny, and serious, all at the same time, and if you add the fact that the book itself if extremely pleasing to the eye you'll realize that Nocturnicon - Calling Dark Forces and Powers is a book you cannot afford to miss.
Note to the reader of this review: I usually don't give 5 stars to a book, since most books have at least a few flaws that lowers the grade, but occasionally it does happen. This time it did, but rest assure that Konstantinos' latest is worth every single one of the five stars.
I give you my reviewer's word on it.

Book Description
Morgan inherited a talent for witchcraft from her parents, and now she is the holder of her mother's Wiccan tools: a green silk robe, an ivory-handled knife, silver bowls, a cauldron, and a long carved wand. The tools are awesome in their power, and Morgan's boyfriend Cal wants to see them, perhaps to seize power for himself. "We are muirn beatha dans, and we will always be together," he reminds Morgan, and she wonders if this is really true. Loyalty to Cal has led her to use her powers in ways that feel wrong. Is Cal the one she is destined to be with? Does she have a choice? Hunter, a member of the Wiccan High Council, says she does. But what is Hunter after? Who should Morgan believe?
Customer Reviews:
Riviting.......2007-05-15
Morgan is amazing in this book. I must say this book was my favorite so far. I havent read the fifth yet but this was actioned pack. I finished this book in one day.
Recommended to Parents who canýt get their daughters to read.......2004-06-15
I purchased the Sweep series for my 13 year old daughter in the hopes that maybe she would read. "She hated to read." Well I was amazed, and could not get her to go to sleep, as she would spend the whole night, with a night-light on reading these books. She enjoyed them so much, and could not stop talking first about Cal and then Hunter, that I had to see what all the fuss was about.
Well after two weeks, a book a day, for a girl who hated to read, it sparked my curiosity, so I started reading, and was surprised to find out how enjoyable a Teen book about Teen Witches could be. I am not really into Wicca, but these books are really enjoyable. I am on my fifth book, and my daughter read each twice, and is know on the Circle of Three Series. I have to highly recommend these books to those parents who can not get their daughters to read. These are excellent stories, full of fantasy, horror, and fun.
This is TOTALLY one of my fav's!.......2004-02-22
Oh, my god. I liked Cal so much and he turns out evil. Such a dissapointment. The book itself wasn't though. I don't want to give too much away. But pretty much what happens is Cal and Selene turn out evil, Hunter turns out good.
I am so confused(sarcastic). Its a real page turner. Anyone who loves to read, read it.
And agian this is one of my Favs!
Exciting!!.......2003-11-17
This book is awesome just like the other ones.
Morgan is just starting to calm down when her she is haunted by a terrible thing that happened in a pervious book. Cal is acting strange and makes Morgan more nervous. Towards the middle of the book Morgans life is shifted when an unexpected visitor shows up.
This book is great and I couldnt put it down. Cate shows in Dark Magick that something is coming. You pracitcally feel it in the words. Its exciting and shifts the plot for the rest of the books.
Plots are revealed.......2003-08-01
The events at the end of the previous book have Morgan very upset. Is Hunter dead? Did she really kill him? Has anyone found his body? Every day and hour brings agony for her.
Cal becomes more mysterious. He is both closer and more secretive, and strange things are going on with his mother. Morgan becomes confused. But then she finds out Hunter is alive. She is relieved to know she was not responsible for someone's death.
In her confusion she must learn to try and trust Hunter and even his cousin Skye. What she learns makes her more confused.
Final confrontations reveal much about the characters and their plans. It is a good and tense story. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Book Description
Reclaiming the word darkness from its evil associations, this book explores the aspects, imagery, and spirituality of darkness.
Customer Reviews:
Short, and definitely to the point!.......2007-03-14
"Out of the Shadows" was an easy read. I finished it in one afternoon. The content did not drag or oversimplified anything. It left the responsibility to the reader of how to use and digest the info within. Some readers will be a little disappointed in the curt statements and explanations about the Gothic culture, the dark religions, etc., but I think the intent was to get the info out into the open with no apologies intended. Definitely a good read for those who are honestly wanting to explore (not dabble) the 'darkness'. It's like a good snack that should not be eaten like junk food day after day.
Darkness.......2007-01-08
An excellent book on Dark Paganism. I finally found what I was looking for. Highly recommended.
Where's the Dark Magick.......2006-01-05
I might have been expecting too much, but I was disappointed with this book. I did not learn anything on Dark Magick per se. The first half of the book is about a variety of subjects like, Goths, Vampires, Lost Souls, the Collective Unconscious, Dark Deities, Satanism and some other stuff. The second half is about Magick, but it sounds more like High Magick to me. Where's the Dark Magick?
I like.........2005-10-12
I like this. It is good and dark and Taylor Ellwood says good stuff that's true about this. Yup..Dark and good..Exploring all dark paths that many books do not do, not just linked to one dark path. This is good, and his column in New Witch is..also good. Take care, Vanes
Excellent exploration of an all too often taboo subject.......2005-09-16
Like the title and introduction of the book says, this is an exploration of dark paganism, magic, and also other darksiders in general. Written by a man whose personal aesthetics have been interwoven into his personal spirituality, he has a unique perspective.
There are numerous topics explored in this book, and the author rightly says in the introduction that each could have filled several chapters or even a whole book! It's an introduction and primer, and highly recommended to all Pagans and Wiccans to gain a deeper and more balanced understanding.
It's best to also keep in mind that while the issue of balance within earth-based pagan paths, especially Wicca, is emphasized; the book is about Dark Paganism. To paraphrase the author, balance does not always mean equal. Such is the case with this book. Beyond challenging us to personalize our paths and to bring back balance, the book's focus is to prime the reader on the darker side.
Personally I found the best parts of this book to be the chapter on the Shadow, the exploring of emanations such as "auras" (free of New Age influence), a pagan/nature-based look at ghosts and a refreshing take on possessions and hauntings. But the best is saved for the second half, the chapters on magic theory. By far the best I've seen, it's both powerful and simple.
Run a search on the author: his website has a preview to the book. Also, if you liked the book and want to go a little further the website has more beyond the pages! Including: essays by several authors, a list of recommended books (very excellent if a bit short in this reviewers not-too-humble opinion), and links to other resources.
I hope that this review has helped those it can, and I wish all you seekers a pleasant day.

Nice if you can get it.......2002-03-30
The book itself I could take or leave but it is a nice tool if you are new game master type. The important stuff was the just after the fact information on what happened to the Mage world directly after the Ascension Warrior trilogy and how to work that into your game -- Stuff that should have been in the Revised ed of Mage but was not. If you don't need tips on how to organize a game or need to know the deeper details of the background fabric, you don't need this book. If you care about that stuff... it's nice if you can get it.
A good solid book that seems to leaves something desired.......2000-03-08
This book is an excellent resource for storytellers of all stripes. It gives clear and concise examples of what could be done with a game like Mage. My only compliant is that, like so many of White Wolf's books, it gets you intrested but then doesn't follow through. I know one of the precepts of the Storyteller System is that you should let your creativity run free. However for the inexpeirenced storyteller (myself included) the book doesn't give you everything you might want to feel comfortable starting a chronicle. For a game like Mage that is big piecce missing from the puzzle!
Essential for the novice or experienced storyteller.......1999-01-26
This book details aspects of storytelling in the dark adventure genre. It gives an assortment of ideas for the storyteller to use in his games. Details of how to create rich settings and characters to fill them are primary assets of this book. There are beginnings of several story ideas that can be customized for play. Even for experienced storytellers, there may be useful items that may have been forgotten or never thought of.
The book is useful not only for the Mage setting (although it is primarily geared that way) but for the other White Wolf settings as well. All of the information included in this book is part of what should have been included in the Storyteller's guide.
The only drawback is that this book only covers the dark adventure. Hopefully, more books of this quality and content will be released for different types of stories.

Well dark is one way to say it........2003-06-09
This book was a very organized. That is one of the few things it had going for it. The problem I found was the added zodiac, and the fact that it had no real place. There wasn't even enough information to tell you about what time of year it was. And where did the information about this New zodiac "Arachne" come from. There was good information on the Dark aspects of the moon, But is still can't grasp Arachne and when exactly this happens. My advice is to take it with a grain of salt and enjoy some tidbits
Something a little different........2003-05-25
It's easy to get lost in the ready connotations of words like "dark", "left-hand path", and even something as simple as "worship". So it'd be easy to misunderstand the reasons behind this book at first glance if one were unknowledgable about such things.
Gail Wood tries to explore mysteries that are deeply feminine and sometimes mistaken for "satanist" rantings. I found it to be very interesting in its ideas, if not always in it applications. I always enjoyed reading the sections about the Dark Moon in the different zodiac houses, though sometimes I would skim through her rituals, as her poetry never really spoke to me. (Which is not necessarily a bad thing...her path is not my path.)
Not necessarily a Wicca 101 primer, nor a quintisential source for stufy, I did find that this book did give me some new insights into human behavior, and put some things that I've always thought about into "plain english".
For people studying philosophy in general or the Craft, I would recomend it.
A Serious Look at the Other Side.......2002-03-22
For what it is, this book is excellent. It offers simple,
no-fancy-equipment-necessary exercises to get in touch with
the sometimes scary "off" periods of nature. I like that
it doesn't promise great mystical insights and tremendous
power. It's a real workbook for people serious about paying
attention to all aspects of the world.
The Dark: Less scary than you might think........2001-10-15
*Sisters of the Dark Moon* is a lovingly and beautifully written book that can add something to almost any witch's ritual "repertoire". (It's very Wiccan-oriented, so if you're not into Wicca, you might not like the way the rituals are set up.) Gail Wood's love of the Dark Goddess and the Dark Moon is evident throughout the book; you can tell this is a path she herself has explored, found rewarding, and now wants to share with others. The book focuses on ritual and meditation; the rituals are simple enough that anyone can do them. You don't need any props except your mind and soul. Even if you just read your first Wicca book last week, there won't be anything to confuse you. And no matter how long you've been on the path, there will be something here for you. There are many resources in print and online with ritual outlines for the various Full Moons of the year; *Sisters* is especially welcome because the Dark Moon is often overlooked. Each ritual is based on the zodiac sign in which the Dark Moon falls, and is self-exploratory and uplifting. Wood compares the Dark to the attic where we keep things we don't think we need or value; these rituals help us find those hidden beauties within ourselves. In the end, Wood helps us with that difficult task, "Know thyself". All in all, a gentle and beautiful book, with something for everyone. The only thing that could have improved it would be a chart of the Dark Moons for the next several years, and the signs they fall into. For the dates of the Dark Moons, try any almanac or witches' calendar; to determine the astrological signs, I recommend Daniel Pharr's *Moon Wise*, a book about lunar astrology in general, and including a lunar ephemeris.
A wonderful journey into the dark...........2001-10-11
Gail Wood's ritual/meditation approach for each of these dark journeys is unique and inspiring. The dark can be a scary place to explore, but the insights I derived from this well constructed, supportive and nuturing work were truly "enlightening". I look forward to more works from this wonderful author who obviously has a positive connection to the dark.

Book Description
Author and expert on metaphysical subjects Francis Melville asserts that psychic attack, the practice of the dark arts, is more common than many of us would like to believe. Often taking the form of nightmares, illness, and accidents, it is practiced on unwary subjects by personal enemies who have turned bitter as a result of envy, hatred, resentment, or spite. He divides his latest book into two parts. Part One explains the basic principles behind all forms of destructive magic, and Part Two discusses ways in which readers can protect themselves against negative influences, whether deliberate or unconscious. Several destructive magic arts are described in detail, including Satanism, Black Lodges, Voudou, and Demonic Possession, among others. Recommended protections described by the author include specific physical exercises, the making of amulets and talismans, angelic invocation, recital of mantras and meditations, and exorcism. This fascinating study is printed in two colors and supplemented with more than 250 illustrations.

Disappointing.......2006-09-18
The book is written like a childs book; small paragraphs with little information, most (and more) of which can be found on the internet for free. I was expecting practical guidance, how to, not general (very general) information about different beliefs and magical practices, or parasitic infestation. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is that it listed info on angels, fairies and other levels of entities as a reference and it had some recipes, if you look hard. Other than that, you can find all on the internet, including that about the angels, fairies etc. If you are looking for a "how to protect against" then look elsewhere. This book approachs the subject in such an innocent fashion that it is actually laughable.
Agree so strongly, I couldn't help but write a review.......2005-10-10
The previous review could not be more correct. I, personally, find the occult fascinating. I have studied various aspects of it intensely for the last 8 years. This book, however, is not intended for someone as well read as I on the topic.
I pointed this book out to my girlfriend in a bookstore, as she wanted to develop a basic understanding for Magick and the occult that has become a central fascination in my life. This book is ideal for that purpose: educating the layperson. It is a book written in simple terms that only lightly touches on the topics contained in its pages. It contains purely factual information, although, some of it, particularly those involving Satanism and Satan, take on a Judeo-Christian biased slant. However, as these are RECORDED by the church, they still must be acknowledged as fact, regardless of validity.
This book also functions well as an immediate, concise reference, but by all means, as with any reference, seek more material.
A sane and highly informative introduction to the Dark Arts........2005-09-16
I would encourage all readers to disregard the two negative reviews here. Having read the book myself I find that I cannot agree with any of the criticisms made by 'Dusty', who seems not to have read the book at all. I haven't the time to refute them all in turn, but I'll just try to redress the balance. I've read Melville's books on Alchemy, Angels and Faeries, all of which I can recommend. Melville is a traditionalist with a sound esoteric and metaphysical grounding. He also has a pleasingly light touch and wry, but not inappropriate, sense of humour. What always comes across in his writings is his profound reverence for sacred tradition and the mysteries of life.
In this book his approach is neither dogmatic nor scare-mongering. His chapter on voodoo is concisely informative and shows respect for what he clearly sees as a genuine religion. He pays due respect to other religious traditions, while avoiding bias and dogmatism. Anybody who has read his book on alchemy will have recognised his respect for Islam and Rosicrucianism, while his books on angels and faeries reveal a sensitive and gentle approach to spiritual beings.
This book is about the DARK ARTS, so of course it focuses on the darkest areas of the occult. It only demonises the diabolical, while pointing out, for example, that most Satanists are just in it for the kicks and that the occasional scares over ritual abuse usually have very little basis in fact.
As for self-defence, Melville is at pains to point out that occult attacks are very rare and that most symptoms can be, indeed should be, attributed to other causes where possible. At all times his advice is sane, balanced and trustworthy. He makes it clear that the best defence is one's own well-being and provides useful tips for achieving and maintaining a strong aura.
In conclusion, this book neither exaggerates nor debunks the Dark Arts. It takes its subject seriously, is clearly well-researched (check out the bibliography) and is engagingly written. The approach is straightforward and grounded in a universalist esoteric tradition. I can highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.
Very disappointing.......2005-05-13
The information here is very sketchy and seems directed at readers who have very little knowledge of the occult. If this is an intro why this work is a presented as a manual is beyond me. There a couple of useful tips in this book but nothing that is very practical or useful if you need to stop a magical attack, the author makes some good points about having a strong aura but that's about it, in order to stop a magical attack you have to find out what's going on first, before taking any steps, in this regard the diagnosis chapter is of little use. Furthermore a good witch/sorcerrer will find how to get past your natural defenses, in this area this book offers almost zero help. The way the other exercises are presented is very sloppy IMO and could even be dangerous if you're not well versed in the arts, confused layout, great illustrations, awesome presentation, very little useful info, Ugh ...
psychic self defense by denning/phillips will be of more help, robert bruce has another similar title which is a bit more empirical but still useful
the witch's shield by penczak is another helpful book
