Book Description

Lance Armstrong's War is the extraordinary story of greatness pushed to its limits, a vivid, behind-the-scenes portrait of Armstrong—perhaps the most accomplished athlete of our time—as he faces his biggest test: a historic sixth straight victory in the Tour de France, the toughest sporting event on the planet.

Made newly vulnerable by age, fate, fame, doping allegations, and an unprecedented army of challengers, Armstrong fights on all fronts to do what he does like no one else: exert his will to win. That will, which has famously lifted him beyond his humble Texas roots, beyond cancer, and to unparalleled heights of success, is revealed by acclaimed journalist Daniel Coyle in new and startling dimensions.

We see how Armstrong rebuilds after his near-loss in the 2003 Tour, discovering new strategies to cope with his aging body. How he fills the holes in his life after his painful divorce from his wife, Kristin, and the ensuing time apart from his three young children. How he manages the exceedingly difficult trick of being Lance Armstrong—a combination of world-class athlete, celebrity, regular guy, and, for many Americans, secular saint.

But a saint's life it's not. To function at his peak, Armstrong requires what his friends artfully call "stimulus"—and if it's lacking, he won't hesitate to create some. We see Armstrong operating at the turbulent center of a fast-orbiting cast of swaggering Belgian tough guys, controversial Italian sports doctors, piranha-toothed lawyers, and jittery corporations, not to mention a certain female rock star. We see the subtle mind games he plays with himself and with rivals Tyler Hamilton, Jan Ullrich, and Iban Mayo. We see him through the eyes of his teammates, competitors, and friends, and explore his powerful relationship with his mother, Linda. We see what happens three weeks before the Tour, when he's faced with a double challenge: a blowout defeat in an important race and the release of a controversial book seeking to link him to performance-enhancing drugs. And finally we see it all culminate in the Tour de France, where Armstrong will rise to new and unexpected levels of domination.

Along the way, Lance Armstrong's War journeys through the little-known landscape of professional bike racing, a Darwinian world of unsurpassed beauty and brutality, a world teeming with underdogs, gurus, groupies, and wholly original characters, where athletes do not so much choose the sport as the sport chooses them.

Over the season, Armstrong and these characters collide in raw and sometimes violent theater. From the first training camps to the triumphal ride into Paris, Lance Armstrong's War provides a hugely insightful look into the often-inspiring, always surprising core of this remarkable man and the world that shapes him.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny and affectionate look at pro cycling.......2007-10-18

Mr. Coyle has given us and his subjects (including the elusive Mr. Armstrong) a great gift. His funny, beautiful prose was in perfect juxaposition with the essence of the sport he covered with much affection. Do sane people ride nearly naked (Lycra!) at 60 mph down twisting, narrow mountain roads (in the rain!)? We can only look on in wonder at their courageous, graceful, crazy, difficult, "cut of coffee short" careers. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading.

5 out of 5 stars After "BIKE" Read "WAR"! See Inside & Out!.......2007-09-25

I had just finished "It's Not About The Bike" when my wife -- a keen cyclist -- turned to me and said, "That's only half the story." She handed me "Lance Armstrong's War." "Here's the other half of the story."

You know a good book when you should be doing other things and... you can't put the book down. Bills don't get paid. E-mails don't get answered. You spend too long in the bathroom. "WAR" is one of those books.

Naturally you need to have some passing fascination with the world of professional cycling. For me it was watching the Tour de France and wanting to know more about how it all worked. Daniel Coyle will lead any interested reader into a fascinating world...

An opera needs to be written about the Tour. The melodrama. The characters. The morality plays. The blood. The guts. The insanity. The money. The doping. The journey. The jeering crowds. The test. The human spirit. Victory and loss. It's all there, a nice thick juicy slice of Life! And a huge bite or two of that slice is in WAR.

On the cover of my copy Sports Illustrated has described WAS as a "literary tour de force." A bit of a snob when it comes to writing I noted to myself, (a) What would Sports Illustrated know about literature? and (b) Daniel Coyle's a SPORTS writer for God's sake!

And... the writing is wonderful. Great character sketches. You'll get all the ins and outs of race strategy, sponsorships, training. You'll see France. You'll get a great glimpse of what Bob (Bobke) Rolls calls Eurotrash. You'll love the wry humor and jaundiced eye. Just wait until you meet the Lance hangers-on, "The Dudes" and "The Bros." Be prepared to LOL.

So if you're at all curious about this fascinating world -- but, like me, are either too old or too wise not to join it (!) -- WAR is Highly Recommended. You're in for a good read.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Side of the Story?.......2007-09-15

I was expecting this to be another story TOLD by Lance, but it was not. I found this to be a more refreshing view on Lance and the Doping Scandles that encircled his Tour De France days.

No matter what my opinion is on Lance and the doping, I found this to be a great read. I learned about some of the "players" in the Cycling media community that are attacking lance's position and character (justified or not), and how the Team operates around the Cycling legend.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Sports writing!.......2007-08-17

This book is one of the finest examples of sports journalism that you're likely to encounter. In some important ways, Lance Armstrong and professional bike racing are almost irrelevant to the reaction this book provokes; the writing is so good that it is almost the "star" of the book.

This is because the author did two things that many-- probably most-- sportswriters don't do: First, he immersed himself in his subject, actually moving his family to the Spanish city where Armstrong and a number of other racers train. While he was there, he became part of the bike racing scene. The result is unprecedented insider access. He interviewed and came to really know dozens of people, not all of whom admire Armstrong. Second, he avoided the two worst afflictions of most modern sports writing, the urge to deify the athletes and the contrary urge to drag them into the gutter.

Bike racing as a sport and many of the bike racers themselves are indeed open to criticism; after all, the current flap over doping at the Tour de France is actually pretty minor compared to the rampant cheating in past races. (My favorite incident of cheating: The Tour's first winner was disqualified the following year for hopping a train to take a shortcut during a stage.) However, Coyle resists the temptation to paint the entire sport and all of the athletes with a black brush. They are humans who do human things, both good and bad, and that's how Coyle sees them.

Of course, some of the things they do seem superhuman. These skinny men consume the caloric equivalent of three complete Thanksgiving dinners every day of the Tour de France. They ride for miles and miles, churning out four or five times the power a typical person could produce. They train in horrible conditions, isolated from their families, for months. They suffer fractures, muscle tears, and horrible road burns, then get back on their bikes for more racing. And the vast majority of them do all of this in near-complete anonymity; stars like Armstrong are very rare.

The book contains a HUGE amount of information about bike racing equipment, strategies, and team organization and financing. It also offers deep insight into many of the sport's stars, particularly Armstrong. There's an "I didn't know that!" moment on nearly every page, and reading it is literally an education in an activity that is wildly popular in Europe, but mysterious to most Americans. However, all of that information is woven into a fast-paced, page-turner of a story.

If you are looking for an expose that demolishes Armstrong or bike racing, this isn't it. If you're looking for a book that promotes the "Saint Lance" legend, this isn't it either. This is careful sports journalism at its finest. And it is superb writing that will fascinate you as you are reading and give you a lot to think about after you are done.

5 out of 5 stars Peek inside the world of our sport's greatest legend.......2007-07-10

What a great book this is. After devouring it as quickly as I could, I'm reading it again to savor each morsel. I feel as though I've actually developed a relationship with the great Lance Armstrong--as though I have been granted access to his greatness at a deeper level. What makes this guy tick? Why is he the greatest cyclist the world has ever known? Read this book and you'll be about as close as you can get to the answer. Unless you're lucky enough to actually know him, this may be the next best thing.

5 out of 5 stars Personality Plus.......2007-09-10

I recently rode my Bike Friday with Lynette and some 40 other "Friday" enthusiasts through the historic towns of Southern Arizona, so I was pleased to find that the personality that exudes from her every pore was clearly revealed in this entertaining, funny, bittersweet, educational account of her biking through Cuba. I can't think of a better way to spend a couple of hours (whether or not you like biking and travel) than to view Cuban everyday life through Lynette's perceptive and objective eyes. The only thing better would be to actually take a bike ride with Lynette.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging travelogue.......2007-08-20

In "The Handsomest Man in Cuba: An Escapade" Lynette Chiang wrote about her adventure biking in Cuba. Originally from Sydney, Lynette travelled light with a bicycle that can be folded, a tent, and a few other necessity items for travelling. It was a great way for Lynette to learn about the culture, food, and people in the country. Even though she was a foreigner with U.S. dollars, Lynette was determined not to travel the way Castro expected tourists to; paying exhorbitant amount of money for hotel or food. Most of the time, she stayed with families or friends that she people she met recommended or just if the rooms were cheap. She was able to learn a lot about Cuban families and their way of life in Cuba.

What I like most about the book is that the author was candid about her observation of Cuba, of the poverty and at the same time of the friendliness of the people. Unlike some foreigners, she did not romanticize Cuba. It was most fascinating to read about the characters she met along her journey, which I thought was definitely the highlight of her travelogue. However, I wish that the author shared more about her personal life, and what brought her to Central America in the first place. This would have made the book even more engaging than it already is. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Cuba and the Cuban people. A fantastic summer read.

5 out of 5 stars You can almost taste the food........2007-06-20

Lynette Chiang descriptive prose could make a trip to the supermarket feel like an event. From the moment Chiang enters Cuba with her little 21-speed folder, a Bike Friday, you'll be on a whirlwind tour of the country. You'll meet the people she meets. You'll learn about the economy and how people survive. You'll experience her less than luxurious accommodations. You'll admire her energy and tenacity. And you'll feel her panting as she pedals up a steep hill. By the time you finish you'll know Chiang and you'll be conversant on life in Cuba. One can only hope the author has more trips and experiences in her fertile mind that she eventually shares them with us.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read and a fresh perspective!.......2007-04-19

This is not your typical travel book, from the seat of her Bike Friday, Lynette Chiang (deemed a "Rugged Individual" by Forbes magazine) takes the reader on a journey of discovery and in the process provides Western readers with a whole new perspective on Cuba. Chock full of grand adventures that include wonderful and warm people and great food to misadventures on a high order complete with questionably sane flashers and colorful muchachos...

And Lynette goes a little further than the average writer from a personal perspective, she gives us a big glimpse of the real Lynette with candid thoughts about her broken heart and graphic descriptions of the joys and sorrows of being a nomad world rambler. This book is definitely fresh and new...

Viva La China!

4 out of 5 stars The Handsomest Man in Cuba: An Escapade.......2007-02-12

Lynette allowed me to vicariously enjoy Cuba and the Cuban people. I felt she gave a real life look at the people more so than another tourist brochure and glossy airconditioning tour company promotions. But hey, that is what bike touring is about, Bravo Lynette

Book Description

Twelve-year-old Carissa lives with her widowed mother, Lorena, in rural Georgia. There aren't many ways for a black woman in the South in 1927 to make a living. Lorena does laundry for white ladies, but she wants Carissa to have the opportunities that come with education. Both of them yearn to move up north, where Carissa was born. Into their lives rides an elderly man on a shiny blue bicycle. Bailey is a wanderer, a storyteller, a thinker, a kind and sociable man who can repair and tighten up and fix just about anything. Soon he's part of Carissa's life, almost like the grandfather she never had. He teaches her how to ride his bicycle, and how to find her balance in other ways as well, and Bailey's time with Carissa and her mother helps him decide how to continue his own journey. A vividly rendered setting, strong, memorable characters, and a narrative rich in humorous and poignant moments make this first novel a compelling and distinctive coming-of-age story.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all ages.......2006-01-02

I want to let readers know this is a truly must read for all ages. Pre-teens, teens, young adults and adults alike will gain truth and insight into themselves; reminding them that freedom is not free. Having not heard of this author before, I can honestly say this writer has heart and wants to reach his readers on many levels. I cannot say enough good things and what a wonderful feeling I walked away with after reading it. My hope is this is not a one-hit wonder. If you like the work of Nicholas Sparks or Nicholas Evans, you'll enjoy the likes of David Dudley even more!

5 out of 5 stars A touching story of loss and hope..........2005-11-16

An excellent read from start to finish. It is wonderful to see an author who takes the time to develop characters and drive the plot without offering two-bit explanations and inch-deep resolutions to conflict. Dudley does not try to solve all of Carissa's problems, and presents good lessons on life's hardships and the need to know what is worth fighting for. A solid work for all ages, especially for young people developing their sense of moral character and integrity. Highly reccommended.

5 out of 5 stars A very moving book.......2005-11-09

Having moved to a small rural community when I was young from a larger city, I was really able to identify with Carissa and her difficulties fitting in and making friends. A wonderful example of when to stand up for yourself and also when to move on and not let people drag you down to their level. I enjoyed the interactions of the characters and the glimpse into hardships of the time period. I'm looking forward to other books by the author!

4 out of 5 stars Bicycles Bring World Peace.......2007-04-01

Here's another Reading Rainbow book for ya. While Levar Burton used this particular title as a springboard for discussing the history of the wheel, I'm going to use it to illustrate a simple recipe for world peace.

First, show up uninvited to a foreign school shortly after the conclusion of a major war.

Second, try not to scare the living daylights out of everyone present by asking to ride the school principal's bike. (They ride bikes a lot in Japan).

Third, show off like crazy by doing insane bike stunts.

If you follow those three steps with every single country, we will see total world peace from here on.

Now go and learn some bicycle tricks.

THE BICYCLE MAN
BY Allen Say
Bikes, kids, teachers, parents, 2 army men, how much more can this book have? In Japan today at school there's a race there's a red team and a white team. The youngest kids ran first. The teacher said'' go. Adults, teachers were cheering. It sounded like thunder. The winners went up and got their prizes. After adults raced a 2 legged race. Then a hush cleared the schoolyard we all stopped and looked at the gate we were scared. 2 American army men walked in and asked could they ride the bike. They did tricks on the bike. After they thanked the principal. Then they left. I recommend this book to 7,8,9,and 10 year olds. I liked this book because it tells you a lot about the Japan race. I would buy the Bicycle Man take it to a race and enjoy. by Daniel F

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read-Aloud.......2004-08-22

My daughter and I loved this book. Not only is it a great way to show that different cultures like to do the same things but it is culturally sound. This book is also a "Reading Rainbow" (PBS Series) book. I also read this book to a bunch of Cub Scouts who were ready to take their "Bicycle Saftey" test and they really enjoyed it. What an enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars My son exclaimed "Read it again!!".......2002-08-24

My 7 year old son loved this book! Each page reeled him in more: the sports day fun, the soldiers, the appealing black character, the bike tricks. He did not want the story to stop. It has been a long time since he asked me to re-read a book!!

5 out of 5 stars A charming vignette. . ........2000-01-27

Soon after World War II, in occupied Japan, two American soldiers (we don't learn why they're there or where they're headed) walk onto a Japanese school yard, and one of them delights the assembled students with bicycle-riding tricks. A charming vignette of the personal interaction between a pair of young men and a group of children, strangers with different languages and from different cultures, whose paths cross briefly and will never cross again. Doubly charming to me because my father, a young soldier [though not the man depicted], was there at the time, and could ride the bicycle backwards better than anyone I've ever met.

4 out of 5 stars lovely and old school.......2000-09-25

Found on the free table. This book was written back when books seemed to have a particular seventies flavor to them, in the style of Free to be You and Me. Steve is a guy mildly dissatisfied with his life. It seems mundane, he is not enjoying it, him and his partner do not relate well and his dog dies. He lives in New York City and winds up -- I forget how -- with a ten-speed bicycle that he learns to ride longer and longer distances, while also making the acquaintance of a strange young woman he meets in a museum. His life starts to get a wee bit surreal. The title pretty much explains how it ends. The story is told with respect and poingnancy and it is short and illustrated with beautiful black and white pen and ink drawings. Great for bicycle fans everywhere.

The book "Ugh" written by Arthur Yorinks and illustrated by Richard Egielski was one of the funniest books that I have ever read. It kind of reminded me of "Cinderella" but it had its own sense of pre-historic mystic and plot. I truly hoped that the author will be inspired to tell us a little bit more about "Ugh." Perhaps a sequel would be nice . . . Either way this book is great. I never laughed so hard-- its simply hilarious!

"Ugh" be story of Ugh, cave boy with big ideas. But Ugh not happy. Ugh have mean sisters, mean brothers. Ugh do all the work-- painting the cave walls, rubbing sister's feet-- while the world plays. But things change when Ugh invent bicycle. --For the first time since "Louis the Fish" introduced adult-style fictional minimalism, complex psychology, and maybe even reincarnation [as well as thuggish salamis and hamburger patties] to the American picture book audience, Yorinks and Egielski have created an equally charming fictional world, in which a perfectly modulated narrative voice is wed to perfectly articulated illustrations. "Hey, Al!" may be the Caldecott winner from this duo, but "Ugh" and "Louis the Fish" are the true classics.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Australian rural and social history .......2007-04-03

This is an excellent analysis of Australian bicycling history, written with an Western Australian emphasis, it is a well written, properly reasearched and thoroughly fascinating gem. It covers mainly the heroic exploits but also offers some analysis of the equipment, conditions, and technological issues. Huge amount of marvellous black and white photos. One of the the few books to properly explore the sociological aspects: public servants, shearers transport etc. If you're Australian and own a bike, then this book is a must.
