This books assumes you know nothing about Gaming Operations and goes from there, taking you on an in-depth exploration of the gaming industry, from it's beginnings through modern-day operations. This book was highly beneficial. I also read "The Gaming Industry: Introduction and Perspectives" from the UNLV International Gaming Institute, both of which I would strongly recommend. Well written and dives to the appropriate level of detail.

i found ruby cookbook is a good read for learning ruby, provides good thorough explanations of the topics, and gives great examples as well. if you want a good dummies book to get you going, this is not the book for you. if you want an encyclopedic reference 1000 pages long, look elsewhere. but this is a great happy medium.

A practical Ruby book with concrete examples. This is not an introduction to Ruby, but it is accessible to someone who has learned the basics. It consists of a series of examples, mostly about two pages long including both code and discussion. Its table of contents is organized by solution--so regular expressions are explained in section titled, "Getting the Parts of the String You Want." Thus it is eminently browsable, allowing you to easily find the pages you need right now.

I've had both good and bad experiences with O'Rielly books, but this one is absolutely good. It works as a great reference book for me. I've picked up so much just from looking at how parts of the recopies are done.
I rated it with four stars because this always room to improve, no book is perfect, but this one comes close.
For impatient types.......2007-07-16
As others already said, this book is all about immediate, hands-on learning experience with some real, live and working code, delivered by *you* quickly. This book by itself may not be enough to gain a deeper understanding of Ruby, and its philosophical background, but should be certainly enough to get you going with a new language, and get a "feel" for it: not only it covers the language (more or less), and the standard library, but it also offers you a quick "preview" of some most popular 3rd party libraries. Just keep in mind that there are many others, and sometiems I disagree with author's selections of what to include. (ImageMagic is one, for example)
Personally, for almost everything I learn, I prefer to have two kinds of manuals: a) deep and concise, and b) quick&dirty. This one fits the second role just perfectly, therefore I recommend it.
For more depth, go ang get "Programming Ruby" as well.

If you are a learning-by-doing type of guy then reading this book is probably the best way to boost your Ruby skills.
There are a lot of useful recipes, especially on Web stuff.
Nevertheless, I'll give it only 4 Stars because it's lacking some basic info on Ruby syntax that I had to find on my own searching the internet. For someone who is new to Ruby this certainly is a drawback.

If you are looking to make some sense of this whole subprime market data, this book is for you. This is a great foundation book. This book is ideally for someone who knows a bit about the business already. I would not advise purchasing this book if you are unfamiliar with the business. There is a lot of jargon that may not be understood.
Nevertheless, this book is an excellent resouce. It touches on everything you ever wanted to know about the CDO market and then some.
This book is NOT for the expert on CDO. This is more for the afficionado.

Ms. Goodman's book is a much needed resource on CDOs. If you are just learning about the CDO market, Ms. Goodman clearly defines key terms and explains the structures from beginning to end. Those with extensive Wall Street experience will enjoy having one of the few well-written references available in the market. It is also a good marketing tool to give to potential investors. This is a good comprehensive reference guide.

The reviewer below suggests that Moorad Choudhry has posted a negative review of this book. To him/her I say this: Moorad Choudhry did not write it. I did. Mr Choudhry actually has a very high opinion of this book, and recommended to me I buy it when I attended a Bloomberg seminar he lectured at a few months ago. "Buy the new Goodman/Fabozzi book on CDOs, its excellent" he told me.
Well I did buy it, but I do not share his enthusiasm for it. It is totally US-centric and has no detail on European transactions.
However, the reviewer below, under internet anonymity, and with no proof whatsoever, decides that any negative reviewes must be written by Mr Choudhry. I am sure that were he to know his identity, Mr Choudhry would instruct his lawyers to sue this spineless, gutless idiot for libel and slander.
Get real, whoever you are. I bought the book and I do not like it. You throw around baseless accusations on Amazon, you have no proof, no clue and no idea. Just because you like the book is no reason for someone else to. And Mr Choudhry did not write that 1-star review, I did. So stop making up ridiculous accusations.

It seems oddly convenient that a negative review of the late Marcia Stigum's book, The Money Market, recommends The Repo Handbook by Moorad Choudhry. Ms. Goodman's book has a similar title to a book he has coming out and has been attacked with one star reviews that seem very similar to the attacks on books with similar titles and on Ms. Stigum's book. The envy is easy to understand, since this clearly written book with pleasing type-face is selling well and is a valuable resource.
Don't miss the chance to buy this excellent reference work on collateralized debt obligations.

Sculpting A Galaxy has some 300 color photos spread over about 200 pages and is a large-format coffee table-size book. For true Star Wars fans, this is an interesting book, not so much a book to read but a book to page through when you've nothing better to do.

For those who have purchased the series of "Art of Star Wars" books, as well as "Star Wars: Sketchbooks" et cetera, this tome is impressive but not novel. Many photos from those earlier books are reused here. The problem is that they have been blown up for this larger format. Consequently, the blown-up recycled photos are slightly blurry. There are some wonderful photos of star destroyer details that have not been seen before...but is that enough to merit this huge new book? That decision is up to you, but I expected heretofore unseen, crisply focused photographs.

The actual content of the book is top notch, with many great shots model shots. I also enjoy the accompanying stories, from behind the scenes. The problem is, the binding was already coming apart when I received it. A beautiful book, marred by a crappy binding.

I have never, e*v*e*r encountered a worse book in any field in my entire life. Ok, so chapter 4 and 9 are cute - but you know what, you really don't need to write a book to publish 30 pages of material that is actually worth reading.
I had a clever teacher who once said: "If you want to pick mushrooms, go to the forest" - well, if you want to learn Math, take the bus and head to the math department. The presentation is completely unclear, there is no motivation and the math is treated in a ridiculusly simplified way.
According to SLP, to prove a theorem, all you need to do is make assumptions - no need to motivate why you make them - that would be overkill, rather leave it to the reder to motivate (as an annoying exercise).
I dream of the day a Mas-Collel of macro economics comes around and writes a comprehensive macro book. Until this day, I am left wiping my behind with chapter 1-3; 5-8; and 10-End. Oh well.

Further, it's an excellent complement of Sargent and Ljungqvist's Recursive Macroeconomic Theory.

This is a really challenging book, worth fighting through. Some of the exercises are impossible without outside help, so for self-study the solutions manual by Irigoyen, et al is *essential*.

As a research economist or graduate student, especially if working in economic theory or dynamic macroeconomics, it is difficult to overstate the value of this book as a handy guide for a set of essential facts (re: theorems) regarding the existence of solutions to dynamic programming problems or markov decision processes, as well as characterizing the properties of the set of solutions.
That being said, this is not the book a budding theorist wants to learn techniques from (For the mathematical prerequisites: measure theory, topology, probability, stochastic processes, hilbert spaces, there are better treatments in the math literature. For dynamic programming in discrete time itself: Bertsekas and Shreve's 1978 text is far superior). Though I am not an expert in macroeconomics, I believe Sargent's sequence of books is a better source for learning the how-to-do, while keeping the economic questions crystal clear: neither of these is a strong point of this book.

Like a lot of these books and courses, you need to do the tasks they suggest to improve. No point reading how and not persisting. This book outlines tasks, explains the progression clearly, and doesn't get trapped with jargon. If you've bothered to look at the book be bothered to do the homework and you'll improve.

The memory techniques taught in this book are tantamount to taking crib notes into an exam. They are, in fact, easier than writing things down. That goes for numbers, dates, events, lists and on and on.
You WILL amaze yourself. You WILL be able to quickly look through a deck of playing cards and immediately name the missing cards, you WILL be able to remember large numbers after hearing or reading them once, you WILL be able to remember lists of large numbers. You WILL be able to recall every scene in a movie or series of events in real life in precise chronological order.
The great thing about this book is that it blows you away with your own abilities. It's a 'self-help' book in the truest sense. You WILL feel better about yourself.

If you need a few tricks in your bag, how to remember things. This is the book. It was recommended by a phych professor who specializes in this subject and also a neuro scientist at a top medical school who also studies the inner workings of our crazy brains. Both can memorize lists of 25 objects after just hearing them once. Its truly amazing. The book has been around forever - check out the suits of these guys on the cover! But its timeless information.

After reading a couple of chapters, I was readily able to remember reasonable lists of items for our shopping trips better than my wife! ;-) However, upon reading more, I realized that the whole book could be summarized in just a few statements: To remember, you need to make the effort to remember. To help in that endeavor, associate each item with something you find easier to remember (example: the name Tony could be remembered as the guy with a toe sticking out of his knee). The book also uses sound associations for numbers in order to remember the specific order of things. With those two techniques applied to every situation, you can remember. But part of the key is - you made an honest attempt to remember it in the first place instead of just glazing over and hoping for the best. Not particularly ground breaking information! However, it did help me to some extent, so I still give it a 3 (as in "okay").
