Here's a book that's as warm and melty as a grilled Swiss on seven-grain bread, and just as wholesome and substantial. Ever since the boss promoted her from bus girl two and a half years ago when she was 14, Hope has been a waitress--and a darn good one, too. She takes pride in making people happy with good food, as does her aunt Addie, a diner cook extraordinaire. The two of them have been a pair ever since Hope's waitress mother abandoned her as a baby, and now they have come to rural Wisconsin to run the Welcome Stairways café for G.T. Stoop, who is dying of leukemia. But he's not dead yet, as the kindly and greathearted restaurant owner demonstrates when he decides to run for mayor against the wicked and corrupt Eli Millstone.
As old-fashioned goodness lines up against the bad guys, the campaign leads Hope in exciting new directions: a boyfriend who is a great grill man, a new sense of herself and her mission as a waitress, and--when Addie and G.T. finally realize that they are meant for each other--the father she has always wanted. And all of it backed up with stuffed pork tenderloin, butterscotch cream pie, and the rhythm of the short-order dance.
Joan Bauer, who won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Rules of the Road, has served up a delicious novel in Hope Was Here, full of delectable characters, tasty wit, and deep-dish truth. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Hope's used to thinking on her feet-she hasn't become a terrific waitress by accident. But when she and her aunt Addie move from New York City to a small town in Wisconsin to run the Welcome Stairways Diner, she isn't sure she'll fit in. Luckily, she doesn't have much time to dwell on it, what with life at the diner and her new home's upcoming election. G.T., the owner of Welcome Stairways, has decided to run for mayor, and no one in town knows what to think. After all, G.T. has leukemia. And his opponent is the current mayor, who hasn't lost an election yet. Some think G.T. is crazy, but Hope sees the goodness and power in him. Will everyone else see it too?

A story about a girl, in all it's glory.......2007-10-08
Hope Was Here is one of the most refreshing and genuine books I've read in a long time. The story carries so many of the themes that interest and captivate today's teen culture, love, family, abandonment, loneliness, as well as an acknowledgment life's general unfairness. Bauer does something miraculous however; she incorporates these elements but she does not make the story center around them. The story is about Hope plain and simple. It is not a treatise on why mothers shouldn't leave their daughters, or a You've Got Mail brand love story, or a girl's search for her father, though a lesser author would have made the story about one, or, if they were particularly bad, all. It is nothing more or less than a peak into the life of one of the most interesting girls I know. (And I do know her after reading this book!)Hope Was Here is a spectacular piece of young adult literature.
hope was good.......2007-08-27
Now, I don't understand why everybody seems to hate"Hope Was Here" so much. Was it because they were uneducated, it involved a mother who abandoned her, that it involved a nice man who died of cancer, or they just didn't like that there was a little bit of kissing in it? The only thing I didn't like about it was that it jumped around from subject to subject a bit, but not to much. Most kids who wrote the review for it seemed like they were quite a bit younger than me, like, 7 or 8, and maybe some of them were even boys, it is not a boy book, it is more of a girl book, if you know what I mean. AND this book is a young adult book, so now wonder they didn't like it. I would say that it is a great book for pre-teens, like me, and teens, girls. I think overall it was a GREAT book, it had some sad moments, but it was a good kind of sad. I loved it, and I highly recommend it for any girl 10-18.
Waitressing and Politics.......2007-04-26
Hope is a teenager living with her aunt. Her mother left her when she was just a baby, to continue her own life of waitressing and dating. Hope has never known her father, although she keeps hoping and believing that he will someday show up again in her life.
Hope's aunt Addie is an amazing cook who has traveled around the country with Hope, working at different diners and turning them into wonderful places to eat. Hope has become a proficient waitress and always manages to find a job working with her aunt.
At the last place they worked in New York City, the owner was a crook who ended up gaining their trust and then taking all of their money and disappearing. Hope and Addie are discouraged and have to find another place to work. This time they end up in a small town in Wisconsin. Hope isn't sure about this place--it seems too small, too unsophisticated for a person who has been living in New York. But the people seem nice and the diner is a good place to work.
The the owner of the diner, G.T. Stoop, decides to enter the town's race for mayor. The current mayor is corrupt and not doing anything to help the town. G.T. is respectable and honest and will do all that he can for the town's citizens. Unfortunately, he has leukemia and is losing strength. Will he be able to win, despite his illness, or will the corrupt mayor retain his hold on the town?
Hope and Addie were both admirable characters. They were very strong and determined and had learned how to be a family of two without being lonely. I liked the descriptions of being a waitress, too, They got across some of the good parts of working in a restaurant.
I thought that things in this story were resolved a bit too quickly, though. It was far too easy to fix all of this town's problems. The tactics of Millstone's committee were also over the top.
Endless Hope.......2007-03-29
I would definitely recommend this book because, every night I would look forward to reading it. One night, I stayed up to ten o'clock reading because I kept turning the pages. In the story I connected to Hope the main character because, sometimes she thought that time would never pass. When she was waitressing, and she was in weeds (little help with a lot of hungry customers) she hopes that time will fly by. From this story, I learned that you could never know when your last moment will be, so enjoy your life to the fullest extent possible everyday.
Uh, dad...mom?.......2007-02-23
This is a book about a girl who is rejected by her mother, raised by her aunt and in search of her father. The yearning of every teen who wishes to be loved, held and wanted is in the heart of Hope. Her exterior tuffness is played out well in a diner environment where a thick skin is a job requirement.
Some of the objections posted here I find unfounded. Hope's entire motivation in life is to seek out the love she misses from her MIA Dad while trying to accept her AWOL mother's attitude. She finds comfort in her imaginations about a loving father and ekes out bits of value from her mother's advice about waiting on tables. These two merge as a force that drives her forward in the book. Her head is motivated by her desire to be the best server and her heart by drawing near to a father. It's all there and justifies all her actions.
Oh, there's one other motivation that fills any open gaps, her devotion to her aunt. I found that everything she does is propelled by these.
I too felt a flaw in the book is the simplification of politics. The Mayor character is too flat, the Cheese company is Vadar like. But unlike one reviewer I saw the politics the other way around. Wisconsin can be a very blue state and small local politics is often devoid of real national issues. So I saw these as liberal people grasping for control, using corporations badly. Despite the usual corporate metaphors and our national rhetoric, we all know that dirty machine politics is the sole domain of no one party. Heck, the Dems wrote the book on corporate, government and local domination at Tammany Hall.
But after a momentary bit of labeling, I discarded the cliches. The story transcended party politics. Its about struggle, finding a cause that's worthy and keeping hope alive.
Integrity, love and hope are universal. This book weves these three qualities into a dramatic stroy that touched my family.
Can't wait for the movie version.

Hope Was Here.......2007-05-01
This modern placed story tells of a young girl named Tulip born into a mother too irresponsible to care for her. So Tulip is taken under custody of her Aunt Addie. While living with Addie, Tulip thinks her name is ridiculous so decides to change her name to Hope.
Hope has to stay strong and deal with the fact that she doesn't know who her father is. Throughout the book she tries to patch up the empty space where her father was in her life.
Hope is a strong, faithful, friendly and lively 16-year-old girl. She is raised as a waitress with Addie, a cook. The two live a great life except for one thing; every time they feel comfortable and settled into a town, the diner they work for shuts down, and they have to start all over somewhere else. This time the diner they work for in Brooklyn, New York shuts down so they journey to Mulhoney, a small rural town in Wisconsin. Mulhoney holds one of the greatest diners; The Welcome Stairways where Hope and will Addie will work.
G.T Stoop is the owner of The Welcome Stairways who is suffering from leukemia. G.T can whip up a good meal and run a good restaurant. But what people don't know about G.T. is that he intends on running against the awful Eli Millstone for mayor of Mulhoney, despite his illness.
Hope Was Here gives off the message of having hope, strength and aspiration and never giving up on yourself or others even in times of despair. Although I enjoyed the message the author tried to make, this book was a bit slow paced for my taste. While reading I couldn't really visualize the town of Mulhoney or many of the characters in it, so I'd say that this book is lacking in the descriptive area. This book is for readers around the age group of 12-18 years old in terms of the dense, sad and heavy material. Hope Was Here was not a very memorable book in my mind, but it might appeal to you, so my suggestion is to try it if you like touching, slow-paced books. But don't give it a go if you want something fast-paced and a little less somber.

HOPE WAS HERE is a brilliant book by an equally brilliant author, Joan Bauer. When I read this book for the first time (my copy is worn; I've read it so often!), I was an instant fan of the author. HOPE WAS HERE is worth your time, worth your money, and worth anything else that you have to do to get your hands on this book.
Hope is a sixteen-year-old waitress who has lived all across America with her Aunt Addie. Hope's mother (who, upon seeing her tiny baby for the first time, named her Marigold, of all things. Addie's twelfth birthday present to her niece was a name change.) has long been out of the picture, visiting only occasionally with tidbits of advice.
Waitressing at the diner in Brooklyn was great for Hope, but, like all good things, it comes to an end. The owner stole all of the money and ran off, leaving Addie and Hope with nothing. The two of them boarded up the windows, and, just before driving off, Hope left her mark: Hope Was Here, in blue ballpoint pen at the edge of one of the boards.
Addie and Hope are off to a small town in Wisconsin. When they get there, they meet G.T., the owner of the local diner where Addie will be cooking and Hope will be waitressing. G.T is a man the town loves, and he's going to run for mayor and change things. The current mayor, a scheming, dishonest typical politician, isn't standing for that, though. He's got to bring up how G.T. has leukemia, and is dying. How, he says, can a man who is dying take care of an entire town? He might not be alive in a few months.
G.T. isn't alone, though. Hope, Addie, and countless others are trying to get him elected, so that he can do some good for the town. Even though things are hard, they've still got to have hope.
This novel is amazing. HOPE WAS HERE is a book that you will not read only once, but over and over. It sticks with you. Part of this is due to the well thought-out characters, especially Hope. She is a strong character, but also a strong person. She's been through a lot, and she's still around, serving up food to hungry customers.
Her waitressing jobs have a lot to do with who Hope is. Maybe to some people (you know the type--not good enough unless you've got a diploma from Harvard), waitressing seems like a dead-end job, but this book shows different sides of it.
HOPE WAS HERE is a page-turner that will keep you riveted from the first word (which happens to be "somehow"), to the last ("had"), and when it's over, you'll want more. Luckily for us, Joan Bauer has written several other books for young adults, including Backwater (r/i), Rules of the Road, and Squashed (r/i). They're just as good as HOPE WAS HERE, too, and that's saying something!

"Hope Was Here" is an awesome book!.......2006-06-26
"Hope Was Here" is a great book for anyone looking for an easier summer read. I have read it twice for pleasure, once for a book report, and once for a newspaper review, and I'm still not bored! It accurately portrays how a teenager must adapt to change and new ways of life nearly everyday. The reactions of the main character, Hope, are very realistic. There's a fair amount of characters, but not so much that who's who is forgotten. The book is also aestheically pleasing, with easy to read print, and the cover is eye catching. Hope is trying to live up to her name and see the light in otherwise pure darkness. The clear message of the story is knowing that you can do anything if you try, regardless of your age or status. Though it is more feminine, it's a great read for any teen out there! :-)

Exceptionally Lame.......2002-03-07
This book is all over the map. Have you ever read 200 pages and still not known what the main point of the book is? If you enjoy such experiences, this one's for you.
Good...but difficult.......2001-06-06
This book is written for Christians who are dealing with significant issues of betrayal and trust in their family lives. The author has included many good points in her book, as other reviewers have commented on. I do want to warn the potential buyer that this is not a quick or easy read. She writes about many difficult concepts relating to forgiveness which take some real time to think over.
Also, I feel that the title and subtitle of this book really don't fit it's contents. The author spends a great deal of space in the book writing about theological, biblical and somewhat ethereal issues dealing with forgiveness and the roles of men and women in marriage; but there was much less practical, hands-on, day-to-day, "real family life" living advice than I expected.
One part of this book that I greatly appreciated was it's emphasis on the need for we "evangelical" or "fundamentalist" Christians to stop playing a role, a part that we think we should fit into, and rather focus on the true internal character of our hearts. She also differentiates between falsely judging someone (that is God's job, alone) and serving as someone who helps someone else overcome their sin. She points out that, since our churches suffer from as much overt decay as our society (as seen in our divorce rates and porn-use rates), we need to realize that there is something drastically wrong in our church society.
I recommend this book for anyone who has the time to devote to this deep subject of forgiveness. I highly recommend this author's first book, An Affair of the Mind.
A WHOLE NEW WAY OF SEEING FORGIVENESS-a life changing book!.......2001-04-02
God doesn't want you to be a doormat--and forgiveness is MUCH more than just 'sucking it up' or 'forgetting and forgiving'. You may have heard "turn the other cheek" so many times--but as Laurie explains--that scripture is highly misunderstood and had a whole other meaning in Jesus' day. Jesus spoke for forgiveness-but He also spoke of a 'defiance' towards sin and abuse, and 'turning the other cheek' was a way of defying the one who would strike you--and winning back ones' dignity. This book about forgiveness gives a whole new way of looking at real forgiveness, radical forgiveness in a sound, scriptural way. The realities of betrayal and abandonment abused people feel were part of Jesus' pain on the cross- a topic rarely spoken about in the church.
Lauries' experience with her sexually-addicted husband, as well as disappointments and struggles with the Christian advice she often received, have produced a wisdom which is God inspired and gives hope to the hopeless. As the wife of a man addicted to pornography, I know how lies and deception can ruin not only your marriage, but yourself. This book changed my life and gave me back hope-- not a hope based on any certain outcome in my marriage, or my husbands recovery.
I was reminded of the scripture, "Above all else--guard your heart--for it is the wellspring of life." (Proverbs 4:23) I had a wrong idea of what forgiveness is--and I never understood what "tough love" was about.
A good complement to this book is "Boundaries" by Cloud and Townsend--which dispells the many myths of 'loving' people taking responsibility for each others' actions. I don't believe it sexist to say that women (especially Christian-women) are especially prone to this. The spouses of addicts even more so. May the peace of Jesus be with you."The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Ps. 34:18)
Forgiveness isn't for Weanies.......2000-12-05
As one chapter subtitle states, "Forgiveness isn't for weanies." If you've been asked to forgive a horrendous violation of trust or abuse, and been battered by the "just get over it" mentality, this book will show you why you can't, and help you get there from here. You can't forgive a wound that hasn't been validated, you just feel guilt for being angry over a wound that people say you shouldn't feel. Some help! Pornography, adultery, incest, these are the gifts that keep on giving, the pain never ends. Tell me how you can survey the devastation to your family and say it doesn't matter? Check out Joseph in the Old Testament with his brothers, after years, he still wails over his losses. To be asked to forgive in lesser ways, through stuffing or suppressing or glossing over, is a sure route to insanity. The cross of Christ establishes the victims right to just compensation. Yet, repentence is the sweetest vengence, while restored relationships just one possible gift of grace. Joseph shrewdly establishes his brothers repentance, and then forgives. Laurie Hall's incredibly funny, real book undoes all the junk we've had laid on us about forgiveness and restoration. I have read this book several times in order to fill my mind with truths that are both powerful to my own healing, and helpful to the restoration of my family.
Help on Every Page.......2000-03-31
Reading this book was like getting glasses for the first time. Now I can see the fine print and the big picture all at the same time. Laurie Hall makes hard concepts very practical and she's worked out all of her advice in her own life. Besides, she has a great sense of humor and that helps a lot because this is not a pretty subject. If your marriage and family life is less than ideal, it's never too late to read this great book.

Baltimore Sun writer Randi Henderson teamed up with author Richard Marek to offer Here Is My Hope, an outstanding collection of true stories of healing and faith based on the patients of Johns Hopkins Hospital. The writers focus their stories around the 10-foot statue of Christ in the main rotunda of the hospital. With its reassuring eyes and outstretched arms, the statue seems to exude the compassion that the ill and their loved ones yearn for when they enter the unknown territory of a hospital. Rather than being a religious icon, though, it has served to represent a place for people of all faiths and backgrounds to lay their hopes and prayers for healing.
In the first chapter we meet Grayson Gilbert, a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a usually fatal disease. With grace and eloquence, the authors tell of Grayson's unusual lethargy that led to the discovery of a cancerous mass in his abdomen and a rushed admission into Johns Hopkins. While he was hospitalized he befriended some of the small children in his ward. Still uncertain of his recovery, he left this note beside the statue, "Dear Jesus, This is Grayson. If you could just heal the other kids, please. Thank you very much." Ultimately Grayson did survive, as do many others who leave their hopes at the feet of this benefactor. Even with all the impressive scientific research that's been recently published on the link between faith and healing, this collection of stories stands as one of the most exquisite and convincing testaments. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
The link between faith and medicine comes to life in a collection of true stories about ordinary people.
For ten consecutive years, the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore has been named the country's number one medical facility in U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings. It is another tradition, however, that inspired Here Is My Hope. In the center of the hospital's rotunda is a magnificent statue of Christ. Over the years, the statue has become a spiritual beacon for people of different religions and ethnic backgrounds. Every year, thousands of prayers written by patients, their families, doctors, nurses, and clergy are left at the marble figure.
Here Is My Hope tells the stories behind some of those prayers; stories of faith and medicine working together in the healing process. A collection that expresses the real feelings of real people facing real problems, it includes stories of courage, of thanks, and of loss. It does not promise miracles, but its message of hope and consolation will be a source of strength and inspiration for people everywhere whose lives are touched by illness, whether they are ill themselves or trying to cope with the illness of someone they love.
Customer Reviews:
A moving account.......2001-07-08
This book is a moving and knowledgeable report from the outside of medicine looking in -- from the patients' point of view. We learn what goes through the minds of people experiencing terrible illness, in themselves or in family members. This is not television, where heroic doctors do their best and everyone lives happily ever after. While there's some demystification of hospital protocals and procedures (comforting for anyone facing a traumatic situation), the heart and soul of the book is about the mystic relationship between faith and healing, between hope and prayer. Ms. Henderson lived these people's stories, and it shows in the carefully detailed, deeply personal accounts. The sentiment is real, never maudlin, and the heroes here are the people who persevere in the face of a terrible enemy with only the simplest of weapons -- a belief that God exists, and will hear their heartfelt prayers.

Wonderful book.......2001-03-31
Wonderfully written and researched, Here is My Hope takes you into the lives of several families who have been forced to deal with the reality of a loved one with a serious illness. This widely diverse group of people all had one thing in common--they found comfort and hope in the striking Jesus statue in the rotunda of the hospital.
Henderson does an outstanding job of taking you inside the lives and minds of the people in her stories. She takes you right along with them on their emotional journies through the hospital. This book will have you laughing and crying through the pages. Once you get started, you cannot put it down.
here is my hope.......2001-03-30
If you've never seen the statue of the risen Christ this book may not touch you as deeply as it does someone who has stood before its majesty. These few stories are just a small part of the hope, courage, and prayers written in the prayer request book that flank the statue. This book isn't "all's well" and nothing bad happens. It looks at the many sides of Hopkins. The story of the 12 year old gun shot victim is both sad and hopeful. His mother clung to the hope of a miracle for her son. They're not the well dressed, highly educated families. Yet they were treated with dignity and respect. Through pain to hope this book inspires and moves us to recognize the hope found there, at the foot of Christ.

Hope not optimism.......1999-08-11
Dr Snyder differentiates will power and way power in hope. That makes sense. He shows the correlations of hope with many positive factors. I agree with him that hope is more than optimism, which sounds like blaming others. Hope looks forward. Teaching hope is difficult. I like some ideas dr. Snyder presents, but some are bit too easy. A well-eritten book on difficult topic.

Book Description
Dancing Spirits brings together our spiritual beliefs accepted by faith and shows how the latest Quantum Physics research unites our faith with fact. It makes subatomic research understandable even to the scientific novice and shows how science now reveals in the laboratory what the religions of the world have asked us to accept by faith since before recorded history.
In doing so, Dancing Spirits enhances and reinforces our spiritual faith and guides us in making contact with the everlasting Spirit within us. It encourages and helps our own inner Spirit, which is truly our invisible Soul, to literally dance in hope and joy now and look forward without fear or doubt to the heaven hereafter with those we've loved and lost.

Spanish New Testament.......2000-06-18
This was the Spanish New Testament of the Bible that I used to pass out to many hispanic communities in and around El Paso, TX on a recent mission trip. It's the bible so it has to be great, but besides that, I think it's a great version for those who speak spanish. If you don't know the bible, I certainly suggest you do.
