There was a time in America (the dark ages of the 1960s and early 1970s) when fondue was synonymous with cubes of white bread dipped in melted Velveeta. After a brief craze, fondue went the way of lava lamps, shag carpeting, and leisure suits, its pot and skewers retired to the back of a high kitchen cupboard where they're forgotten until the next garage sale. Now, however, fondue is making a comeback, and--like Barbie--it's gotten a whole new look. In Fondue, Rick Rodgers takes the three basic fondues--cheese, chocolate, and fried--and mixes in the flavors of the '90s--everything from sun-dried tomatoes to espresso. He even adds a fourth category, Asian fondue, for those fat- and calorie-conscious cooks who prefer their food simmered in broth. Swordfish Fondue with Tapenade Mayonnaise; Gingered Curry and Cheddar Fondue; Vietnamese Beef Fondue with Rice Vinegar Stock and Anchovy-Pineapple Sauce--the '60s were never like this! In Fondue, Rick Rodgers proves that, once again, it's hip to dip.
Book Description
Fondue is back, bigger and better than ever, popping up in kitchens everywhere! Rick Rodgers presents more than fifty sensational recipes that combine the newest tastes with traditional favorites, creating versatile and mouth-watering fondues that will thrill fondue lovers.
Rediscover the pleasure of cooking food at the table with your friends and family as contemporary flavors and ingredients -- roast garlic, fresh ginger, sun-dried tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, and espresso-are stirred into today's fondue pot. This is great food that is simple to make and perfect for entertaining.
If you love the classic cheese version, try dipping cooked shrimp or artichoke hearts into Italian Fontina and Porcini Fondue; or vegetables and apples into Gorgonzola, Port, and Walnut Fondue. Dunk focaccia or Italian salami into Sun-Dried Tomato Pizza Fondue, bite-sized cubes of bread or even chicken breast into Classic Swiss Fondue, made with three cheeses for a deliciously authentic masterpiece.
Meat lovers will go for Fondue Bourguignonne, where chunks of table-fried meats (or poultry or fish) are dipped into a variety of quick-to-make sauces. Serve boneless leg of lamb with Balsamic Vinegar-Mint Sauce or turkey breast with Cranberry-Lime Mayonnaise.
Many Asian cuisines have their own versions of fondue that are popular choices for communal meals. Known as hot pots, they're an exotic mix of ingredients in a special savory stock. Try the famous Japanese version, Shabu-Shabu, with paper-thin slices of beef and a sesame dipping sauce, or the Classic Chrysan themum Hot Pot, composed of a variety of meats and fish to be dipped in a soy-sherry sauce.
For the confirmed dessert fanatic, nothing will please the palate more than sweet and rich tastes from your fondue pot. The choices are intoxicating-fresh strawberries, pineapples, and cherries, and chunks of pound cake can be swirled into Classic Chocolate Fondue. A sinful concoction of peanut butter and milk chocolate is made to be savored with bananas or brownies. And who can resist dipping a cookie or two in Venetian Espresso Fondue?
Intense in taste and flavors, innovative in form and preparation, fondue is the way we want to eat today.

Some of the recipes just don't seem too appetizing.......liked "The 125 Best Fondue Recipes" better!!!
Great Fondue for Grownups!.......2005-02-09
This book is chock full of excellent recipes that would be a hit with any grown-up dinner party. If you are going to have a get-together with friends and are looking for recipes that not only look and taste good but will also be impressive, this is the book for you. I really just wanted a fondue book with tried and true recipes that would appeal to my family. There are a few simple recipes in the book, but most of them have names like Italian Fontina and Porcini Fondue, Welsh Cheddar and Bacon Rabbit Fondue, Lobster Newburg Fondue, Smoked Salmon, Capers and Triple Creme Fondue, you see the trend. So if you are having an adult dinner party with friends and want to have something that sounds trendy or exotic, then this book is the one for you. If you want some simple family-type recipes, I would suggest looking for something different.
Excellent food history lesson and delicious recipes.......2004-12-28
This is my first exposure to Rick Rodgers' writing and I am already looking to buy more of his cookbooks. He is thorough in his explanations of what equipment, chocolate, cheese, etc. to buy without being wordy or condescending. Each recipe comes with a paragraph lesson of its origin (e.g. Swiss, French, Italian) and/or American fondue versions and/or to whom the recipe would appeal. This book has such a variety of recipes that both the more and less adventurous eaters in your dinner party will be gastronomically satisfied. For a real Swiss experience, I recommend the Classic Swiss Three-Cheese Fondue and the Classic Chocolate Fondue. Recipes I'll be trying at my next fondue party are: Italian Fontina and Porcini Fondue, French Gruyere and Onion Fondue, and the Original Toblerone Fondue. This book offers years of interesting entertaining. Rick Rodgers' recipes and dipping suggestions can be trusted to provide a superior dining experience.
No photos needed!!!.......2004-03-25
Since when are photos needed when the book is clear and as well written as this one? In my mind never.
This was my first book for fondue and frankly ALL the others books I either bought or looked at may have had photos but were so lacking in details, originality and interesting recipes I haven't used the two others I bought and haven't bought anymore. This book is simply the best fondue book you can buy, not only does it have good recipes it has clear instructions on how to use a fondue pot the differnt kinds of fondue pots as well as a comprehensive list of cheeses, breads, meats and other ingrediants good for fondue.
Anyone with a fundimental skill in cooking doesn't need a photo to know how to grate cheese or cut bread into cubes.
Dip It Fun Food Cookbook.......2003-12-29
Rodgers is a prolific cookbook writer of all types and sorts, including his Christmas and Thanksgiving 101 books, as well as the more serious and magnificent cookbook on Vienna, et al Bakery.
This is focused on a comeback entry, fondue. Many of us from sixties and seventies went through the rage for this and had not thought of it for awhile. Now this resurrgence, and Rodgers provides us with a quality work to explore this new appetizer, main course and dessert entry.
He provides equipment section, that although brief is usuable and reliable info. Would have been nice to have photos and source info, but these aren't really that vital to this food venue.
His creativity in collected these recipes is what makes this book valuable: feast your fondue spear on such as: Sun Dried Tomato Pizza Fondue; Caribbean Edam and Habanero Chile Fondue; Rosemary Ragna Cauda with Vegetables; White Chocolate and Raspberry Swirl Fondue; and Double-Berry and Riesling Fondue.
Each is helped by a "What To Dip" box with many times dozen and more items suggested.

I use this in my classroom to teach my students to rhyme.......2006-11-07
I'm a teacher of pre-k children in a public school. Rhyming is one skill the children are required to know before entering kindergarten. Not only do the children love this book, but they also feel like they are "reading" because they memorize it after a dozen readings. I read it every day for about a month (we have school 3 days a week) and every child has learned to rhyme and I really do credit this book as the foundation of how I teach rhyme. (Of course, I use rhyme in other ways. However this book is a large part) Excellent book!
For the younger reader.......2005-10-26
This is a cute, colorful story but is definitely intended for a young audience. It was a little more simplistic than I had anticipated so I would recommend it for children under the age of 5 or for the emerging reader, since it has simple, rhyming text.

An EXCEPTIONAL Read.......2007-06-30
Every single day I turn on the news, there's some new piece about steroids in sports. People are dying, children are crying, all that. But I always wondered why the news NEVER talked about the studies proving all of these nasty things really happen... after reading this book, I FINALLY understand. Because the media is full of crap! I really enjoyed this book and learned a ton from it. It is a bit outdated in that the IOC is now 4:1 and not 6:1 in T/E, but the points are all still valid. Highly recommended!
Nice and smooth... like a shot of steroids!.......2006-06-27
I thought it was a pretty good read... pretty honest. The guy below who said it's smug I think is a little off. Shouldn't it be smug? The book is right. The book uses science, when the media folk use opinion. I think it SHOULD be smug and should scream "I AM RIGHT!" but that's just me. I've used steroids. I'm not dead. I won't die from steroids. This book is a breathe of fresh air. And I think the reason why steroids are killing athletics is because of how kids are looking at the games now. that's bad for the athletic organizations and the games.
I gave it four stars because I think the doctor with a sales pitch is annoying. Otherwise it's pretty good.
How Are Steroids Killing American Athletics?.......2006-06-27
Nathan Jendrick takes the reader on a wide range of issues surrounding the use of steroids in sports and by the general public.
While his chapters seem just a bit smug - almost saying, "I am right because I am the one who has the real information" - the book has highs and lows based on who is being interviewed. And just for future reference, the spelling of the late Curt Hennig's name was not correct.
The top sections belong to Olympic champion Gary Hall - who feels that there should be a zero tolerance policy when athletes test positive for illegal drugs - to the final chapter on the potential of gene therapy as a means to take the "game" to the next scientific level.
A doctor who discusses a new psychological approach for athletes seemingly has a promotional pitch to explore and purchase his product.
The bodybuilder - featured in a recent cable special on steroids - wants to settle grudges he has against the industry. Who cares if some male bodybuilders earn extra cash by allegedly posing at parties for gay men. What does that issue have to do with the topic?
An attorney questions why professional athletes have seemingly avoided prosecution in steroid cases, while members of the general public have felt the wrath from the judicial system. But it is naive to assume that the power of the various leagues and organizations in this country will not do everything in its power to prevent their athletes being front-page fodder, being led away in handcuffs due to alleged drug transgressions.
The athletes outlined who feel remorse for their steroid use is laughable. If they weren't caught cheating I am sure they wouldn't have such tearful confessions.
While there is information that rarely is covered in major media sources, Jendrick never gets around to telling the reader, "How Steroids are Killing American Athletics."
Rather, it seems as if Jendrick leans to making the use of steroids legal for those age 21 and over, but reserving the right for governing athletic bodies to continue to make such usage illegal by its competitors.
An Informative and Easy Read..........2006-05-20
I really enjoyed reading Dunks Doubles & Doping - it provided an objective insight into the effects of steroids on Olympic and professional sports. Jendrick's perspective is not flatly really pro-steroids, but rather pro-legalization for the mass market (cosmetic use by adults), while still keeping them illegal for competition in sports, which he goes on to explain and justify rather nicely. There are many points in the book where you find yourself saying "Hmm, I didn't know that!" For me, perhaps the most disappointing thing I learned was confirmation from various sources that all or nearly all professional bodybuilders use steroids and/or HGH.
The Interview with Gregg Valentino (and his enormous arms) was definitely a fun read. I also found the Doping sections in Chapters 13/14 quite interesting. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about steroids, their effect on athletes, and on sports in general.
Like a boulder rolling down a hill..........2006-05-04
... this book nails the haters in the sack. Like a slam dunk or a quarterback sack, this book hits hard. Figured the hype was overated but its actually good stuff. Probably 4 1/2 stars is most accurate because I would have liked to see more stuff on the pro wrestlers, but for what its after it accomplishes. Definitely was educated by reading this.
Book Description
Earl "The Goat" Manigault had what it takes to become a superstar: incredible leaping ability, great timing, and unstoppable moves. He set a New York City junior high school record by scoring 52 points in one game. In high school and on the playgrounds of Harlem, he astonished opponents with his acrobatic shots, including the patented double dunk.
Although seventy-two colleges offered him scholarships, lack of discipline and bad breaks sent Manigault stumbling into a world of heroin addiction and petty crimes for three years. He succumbed to the fast lane life that sapped the lives of so many of his friends in the 1960s.
The Goat kicked the habit, however, and then returned to Harlem to start his own summer basketball league for black youth.
This inspiring story of how one man rebuilt his life is told with vivid, no-holds-barred descriptions of the harshness, humor and love in today's inner city.

well written tale aimed at elementary school children.......2005-01-11
Twins Marcus and Mia as well as other students at their school look forward to meeting superstar basketball player Jason Carter just before a pro game. Both enjoy playing the game and Marcus, who is a math whiz, hopes to be as good as his hero Jason. His sister wants to be a reporter and is writing an article on the visit with Jason. The kids have good time while Jason encourages them to understand that there is more to life than sports as he was a chemistry major in college.
THE REAL SLAM DUNK is a well written tale aimed at elementary school children. Young readers will appreciate Marcus as he worries that Mia is taller than him and how to behave when he meets his hero. The story line makes no apologies in that it emphasizes education is more important of a dream although it is okay to want to be a famous wealthy basketball player. This reviewer kept thinking of Mrs. Reagan's unrealistic "Just say no" campaign as Jason preached having dreams outside the hardwood floor.

Cornell Duncan. The guys call him Dunk, but he couldn't dunk from a six-foot ladder. He's flat-footed and slow and jumps about two inches. But put him at the foul line and he doesn't miss. That's a big part of the reason he makes the YMCA's all-star basketball team going to the state tournament.Three days at the New Jersey shoreif the team keeps winning, that is. Dunk would like nothing better. But it takes a few disastrous minutes off the bench for him to realize that it'll take more than free throws to make him a real all-star.

Book Description
To the Bozo, the clown who sits inside the cage above the dunk tank, everyone is a "mark." Once he has zeroed in on his victim, the Bozo comes up with the perfect wisecracksomething funny enough to make people stop and listen, and cruel enough to hook the mark. Now the mark is bent on revenge, and he'll buy however many balls he needs to hit the target and see the Bozo plunge into the water. It's a game that fascinates Chad, who lives on the Jersey shore, where the boardwalk turns into an amusement park every summer. He wishes he could shout at the world from the safety of a cagehis dad ran out on him and his mom, and now everyone seems convinced that Chad will wind up a loser, too. He's determined to get a job playing the Bozo, something he knows he'd be good at. Suddenly, Chad finds himself thrown into a strange and twisted world, where humor has far more power than he ever imagined. With a crackling plot and smart, funny dialogue, Dunk pulls readers along on a journey that exposes a universal truth: We all need to laugh.

Gavin's Reveiw.......2007-01-24
Ah, it is summer again, a time and place when the best things can happen to you. No school, no teachers and best of all, a time to do what you want. The best? Not for quiet, witty, and friendly Chad. His life seems like it is deep under water in David Lubar's Dunk. Do not be fooled by the name or the blurb of the story because once you get into Dunk, It will feel as if the book was almost super glued to the hands your reading with. Chad's sarcasm and plain old wit will make you laugh so hard you will start to have pains in your sides. Most humorous books do not have much of a true message. This book has a much better message than other thoughtful tales.
Chad's life is all washed up in the story when Malcolm, the man who has the job he wants, moves into his house. One of Chad's closest and only friends, Jason, has a terrible disease that is killing him. To top it off the love of his life, Gwen, who he finally had the guts to ask out is dating a drug dealer. Dunk is an emotional roller coaster you do not want to miss.
Dunk's sense of what life is about is what makes this book so incredible. It really tells the reader know how life is definitely not a walk in the park. There are similar qualities between Dunk and Be more chill. Both books explore the real thoughts of a teen and how the things that happen can get the best of us. If you thought Be more chill was amazing, then you will be drenched with on going thoughts while enjoying Dunk. Dunk's message is, no matter how cruddy or bad your life is, appreciate the things you have, and remember only you can change it. It's really all in your own hands.
With laughs, love and a meaning of life, Dunk will flood you with loving thoughts.

Book Review
Dunk is about Chad who is a kid that wants to be the bozo in the dunk tank on the Boardwalk. The real bozo is a guy named Malcolm who helps Chad threw out the book even though Chad hates him. Towards the end of the book Malcolm and Chad become good friends, and Chad gets to be the bozo.
My favorite part of the book is when Chad becomes the bozo. He finally gets his chance to get in the tank and let loose at all of the people. When he gets into the tank he freezes and doesn't say anything. Then Malcolm tells him to be bozo and not his self. Then he starts to be a good bozo and attracts a lot of people and he has a lot of fun.
I recommend this book for many reasons. This is more of a guy book. I would also recommend it to people who like suspense. Also I would recommend this to people who like comedy. Overall Dunk was a very good book for the most part. In some parts of this book it started to boring, but keep reading because it just gets better.

very good .......2006-02-13
This book was very interesting. It at first did not seem like a good book, but it was. I always wanted to find out what would happen to the boy. Maybe it was because the story was so realistic of a teenage boy today. He always had new obstacles to overcome in his summer. Somehow he always got through them in a practical way. Or maybe it was his goal of what he wanted to become, a bozo in a dunk tank, that is not really an average goal for a most teenage boys. He just seemed like somebody that I would hang out with and that I could relate to. It was a fast read but still very interesting.
Book Description
For the woman whose significant other spends hours glued to ESPN comes a fun and irreverent guide to understanding (and enjoying) the male-dominated world of spectator sports
From The Smart Girl's Guide to Sports:
Welcome, ladies. This book will not make you a sports expert. It will not make you put down a great novel to watch football, or stop you from helping your kids with their homework because you have to watch the last five minutes of a basketball game. It will, however, give you a glimpse of why men do these things. And it will allow you to enjoy sportsreally, I swear.
The beautiful thing about sports, unlike, say, neurosurgery, is that a little bit of knowledge is not a dangerous thing. If you're amidst a herd of men and the topic turns to sports, you only need to know a few key points and you're in. If the discussion turns to home runs, for instance, and you say, Yes, but there's never been anything more exciting than when McGwire and Sosa were after Maris's record, you instantly win a new kind of respect from the testosterone crowd.
We don't have the sports gene men have. (We have other, better ones.) Thus, this book aims to give you only the most fundamental, most fun, and most entertaining informationthe tools to enjoy sports, or to participate in the game in whichever way you choose.
The Smart Girl's Guide to Sports covers all the major professional sports: football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, soccer, boxing, and even car racing.
Each chapter includes a Here's How It Works section that explains the basics of the game; profiles of each sport's timeless greats and contemporary cool players; and a funny, readable glossary of key terms.
Customer Reviews:
Great read and resource.......2006-08-21
This book is fabulous! Take it from a woman who doesn't like things being thrown at her and therefore has no knowledge of sports, this book has been extremely useful. I work with teenagers and am amazed at the conversations that I've been able to start with just a little bit of information gathered from the pages! And now that football season has begun, I find myself watching the games with book in hand.
The book is clever and funny (which makes me want to read it because its entertaining) and explains everything in easy to understand details (I've had quite a few "A-ha" moments that I never had when men would try to explain the physics of a fly ball!). Plus, I love the sports related movies and bios on important sportsmen in each field, which helps me to actually care about the sport.
Brilliant!!.......2006-06-06
Witty and insightful look at sports. Great for both the sports enthusiast and novice alike.
Just enough for "water cooler" conversation.......2006-01-15
This book is a great intro to sports for the clueless (or semi-cluess) woman (or man, I suppose.) Musiker covers basketball, baseball, football, hockey, golf, boxing, and car racing. This book truly is basic enough for a total beginner, but myself (not a beginner with four of the sports covered) still found out things that I didn't know, and got clarification of some things I thought I understood.
Musiker gives just enough information to make you understand the game (and be able to have a conversation about it) without getting too in-depth about any aspect. She also gives short biographies on some notable players (past and present - side note - while there will always be discrepencies in these kinds of lists, I found some obvious holes that I think most people would agree with - no Yzerman on the hockey legends list? No Ken Griffey Jr. on the legends-in-training baseball list? But yet, Eli Manning on the football list? Musiker must be from the east..)
Also included are a "just know this" section which sums up the chapter, and a pretty-detailed glossary at the end of each chapter.
Overall, this is a great starter book for those new to sports (or just some of the sports covered) or could be a nice refresher for someone just above a beginner level. It can help you determine if you might have an interest in learning more about any of the sports covered. (If you want to learn more about football, "Get your own damn beer, I'm watching the game" by Holly Robinson Peete is wonderful.)
Great for all Sports Nuts.......2005-12-26
I enjoyed this book very much and found myself laughing at some of the clever quotes. I'm a man, a sports nut, and I still learned new things about a variety of sports from this book. Anybody, whether you're a sports nut or a sports novice will enjoy and learn from Liz's insightful prose.
Finally a book for the sports-challenged woman!.......2005-12-25
Finally a book that explains the mechanics of these games in a way that is entertaining and informative. I had never understood the fascination with boxing or Nascar before reading this book. Not that I'll ever be a fan but can now be a part of these conversations at work instead of on the sidelines. I'm already a reasonably knowledgeable basketball fan and still found new snippets in this book. The style is breezy and fun making the "facts" much more entertaining to learn. A great gift for anyone but especially your girlfriends who are sports-disabled!
