Book Description
South Beach in the late 1990s is a town of blink-and-you'll-miss-'em nightclubs populated by celebrities, models, mobsters, heiresses, drug dealers, drag queens, and fun seekers of all stripes. It's a place where the famous come to party like locals, the locals party like rock stars behind velvet ropes, and the press is savvy enough to know what not to report.
Rachel Baum is a sheltered, career-oriented everygirl when she moves to South Beach from her quiet Miami suburb, searching for a life less ordinary. Quickly making friends among SoBe's most exclusive scenesters, she spends her days building a career and her nights building a reputation. But in a town where friends become enemies faster than highs become hangovers, the life less ordinary turns into more than Rachel bargained for. As she pursues the endless party in penthouses, dive bars, after-hours clubs, and cocaine speakeasies, Rachel struggles to balance her goals and ambitions with the decadence and excess -- especially her drug-fueled, on-again off-again relationship with Yale-graduate-turned-addict John Hood -- that threaten to destroy everything she's always worked for.
With tremendous wit and razor-sharp insight, Diary of a South Beach Party Girl portrays the innermost sanctums of South Beach's privileged Beautiful People through the eyes of a no longer innocent heroine.
Customer Reviews:
A Shocked Reader.......2007-09-13
I bought this book because a magazine suggested it and said it was supposed to be a great, easy read. It really was an easy read and it wasn't that bad. Although the book isn't great, and has no real substance to it, Gwen Cooper's writing makes you not want to put the book down (after page 100 or so!). Her writing keeps you up intil 2 am trying to figure out of her main character Amy reaches social heights or falls flat on her face. The life that her main character lives is what drew me to this book, and in it, if you know the right people, wear the right outfit and get into the part fashionably late and past all of the crowds (with having to pay no cover fee to boot!) then you're instantly "in" in South Beach. A good read for those of you who don't take yourself, or life, too seriouslly.
What happens when a good girl tries life on the edge . . ........2007-08-30
Our recent fascination with South Beach stems from it's hype with the MTV crowd, PDiddy, JLo, Paris and other party people but this party girl's story comes from a different era altogether. It was a time of partying and debauchery that seemed to go on under the radar. One thing is clear: if you weren't there then you know nothing, making Gwen Cooper's perspective undeniable unique and invaluable in understanding this remarkable era. Perhaps not all will find it that remarkable, considering that things like excessive nightlife, drug use, flamboyant fashion and sexual openness seems to find havens in different cities as one dissolves into another. The curious part about this book is seeing it all happen to a well adjusted, middle class, heterosexual, American woman, and for all intensive purposes a Republican. Her journey weaving in and out of different social strata and climbing the to the top of South Beach's party scene is amazing, yet somehow begins to feel redundant and at the same time we feel unfulfilled, so does she.
The characters are interesting and intense. The story is as pulsating as the nightlife itself. You relate to the morally questionable choices she makes because of how tantalizing they sound. Unfortunately I found the ending a bit scant and too peachy for the tone of the rest of the book. It's still worth reading everything before the Epilogue.
Ah, the dark side of the rich and famous.......2007-08-30
The flash and glamour of South Beach is renowned the world over. Known for the "Beautiful People," the South Beach of the nineties epitomized the penultimate party lifestyle, a way of life that is in reality no more than a flash-in-a-pan. Reputations, fortunes, and fashions are made and broken at stellar speed, crashing as fast as they are created. Living life in the fast lane, celebrities, drag queens, drug dealers, models, mobsters and local cruisers partied hard and without abandon.
Diary of a South Beach Party Girl leads the reader on a wild ride of historical social proportions, seducing the reader into the fantasy lifestyle led by Rachel Baum and her cohorts. Cooper is a fourth-generation Miami Beach native. She moved to South Beach in 1997 to chase a more spectacular lifestyle and rose to South Beach celebrity status at the speed of light. The story parallels Cooper's "career girl by day, party girl by night" lifestyle. The story's lead, Rachel Baum, recounts the experiences living the life of excess and depravity within a social structure that embraces the popular and banishes the socially exiled.
Written with humor and angst, Cooper captures the idiosyncratic spirit and distinctive culture of South Beach in the glossiest years in the town's history. Class and social position dictate the protocol of social activity. Though all walks of life are exposed in Diary, the most explored relationships are those that Rachel and her closest friends maintain. Rachel is the straight foil to her gay friends, winning allegiance from the gay community to the darker relationships Rachel develops along the way.
The pace of the story is non-stop and filled with accounts of a fantasy lifestyle and the not-so fantastic consequences of excessive living.
Armchair Interviews says: A great summer (or anytime) read!
SO GREAT!.......2007-06-27
I was absolutely GLUED to this book and could not get enough of it! It's so smart and so much fun, and the writing is spectacular. Most of all it was a story I could completely relate to, even though Rachel Baum's adventures in South Beach couldn't be further from my own everyday life. I fell in love with the characters and all their ups and downs, and I laughed and cried right along with them.
I can't even imagine how anybody could describe this book as "boring." I can't remember the last time I read something this outstanding. I highly recommend this book!
I can't wait for the next one.......2007-06-24
My first review, even though I've been reading reviews on here and buying books for years. I just finished this book and I thought it was amazing. The character of John Hood is so unique and interesting, I would love to read a sequel told by him, up to the point where Diary ends..and beyond it too of course!

Summer Party is a Blast!.......2003-10-29
The book Summer Party is by Cynthia Rylant. A quick summary of Summer Party is that three girls named Tess, Rosie, and Lily live in their Aunt Lucy's attic for the summer. At the end of the summer, the three girls plan a party for their family. They're at the party with Japanese Lanterns, entertainment, and fortunes. After the party, Michael, Aunt Lucy's boyfriend asks, "Aunt Lucy will you marry me?" I would give this book to my friend Renee because she loves the summer.

"We used to sit on the playground and plan our weddings, tracing long flowing white gowns in the sand with sticks. Then, in sixth grade--I can't remember the day it happened--a stone rolled in front of our futures. We dropped the sticks and our dreams and started planning our funerals instead." This sad, resigned voice, wise beyond her teen years, is that of Kata, a girl who has just lost her best friend, Ana, to gang violence. Ana and Kata, inseparable since fourth grade, are on their way home from winning another underground dance competition, when Ana reveals she is pregnant. Although Ana is worried about her mother's reaction, both girls know this is good news--now she can finally "face out" and escape the gang life in which the two have become hopelessly entangled. Moments later, Ana is killed in a drive-by shooting, and Kata must cope with the loss of her other half ("it took two of us to make one person"), as well as her helpless, alcoholic mother, her murderous hunger for revenge against Ana's killers, and her desire to leave gang life forever.
Lynne Ewing, author of Drive-By, an ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers, spins a harrowing, captivating tale with Party Girl, which paints a clear picture of gang life with lovely, mesmerizing prose. Ewing's sense of drama is exquisite, and the realism is enhanced by her incorporation of Spanish, Quechua, and gang lingo into the dialogue. As readers live through Ana's struggles, they may be inspired to think more deeply about what lies beneath the tough exteriors of hardened gang members. For example, consider Ana's haunting recollection: "Sometimes when I was a little girl, I would play with my mother's hand, pretending her hand was a doll. She'd let me hold the hand, kiss the fingers, cuddle the arm while she drank her beers and smoked with her free hand and talked to dark men." While the ending may feel a bit too tidy for cynics, the final message of hope is a welcome relief after this grim, eye-opening walk on the wild side. (Ages 12-16) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
The room smells of sweat, smoke, beer, and longing.
The music pulses, the lights flash, and Kata and Ana dance. For a moment the raucous crowd is tamed, and together the two girls soar above their lives. but then the deafening applause sends the dancers crashing down to earth, back to the gang wars, the gunfire, and the only way of life they know.
In a neighborhood consumed by violence, every day may be a gang member's last. And sometimes the only life you can hope to save is your own.

Great Book.......2006-09-18
This is a great book. It gives you a look at how gang life really is, and how hard it is to escape the life. I really enjoyed reading it, but i didn't like the ending, you'll see why when or if you read it. Out of all these types of books i still recomind Go Ask Alice....
Party Girl by Lynne Ewing.......2006-03-13
Party Girl was a story about two very young girls named Kata and Ana. Kata and Ana came from two different families. Kata lived with her mother who was always drunk messing around with different men. Ana lived with an over protective family very
different from Kata's. Kata and Ana went to the same school and lived in the same violent dangerous "ghetto".
Kata and Ana went to the parties every night. These young girls were well known because they danced on stage to get everyone's attention. Dancing was the only thing that would get their minds out of the hood they lived in. The girls only learned to live this type of life and eventually had to learn to deal with nasty comments from other people such as "you got no future. No future on your face. None at all." They didn't pay any mind to those comments, they just enjoyed every night like it was their last. Unfortunately, Kata's happiness ends the day that Ana confesses that she is pregnant. This also is the night in which Kata loses Ana and learns to face life and the damages of her neighborhood without her best friend.
Personally, I can relate to kata because I live in a neighborhood filled with violence and drugs. In life I've also lost very close friends and families members. i can also relate to Ana not only because of the type of neighborhood i live in, but also because i have parents that protect me a lot like hers.
I really recommend this book. If you're a teenager who would like to know how hard it is to live in a dangerous area with no choice other then to either hope yo stay alive or just die, then this book is for you. I would also recommend this book to parents so they can get a better idea of what teenagers go through everyday and the choice they will have to make in life.
Party Girl.......2006-01-18
Being a mom of three children i read many books like this one. Although most of them are true stories and journals. I have to say that this is a good read, i read the whole book in one day, it was one that i didn't want to put down. This is a story about two girls that grow up together and are jumped into a gang and how it changes their lives.

!Best Book Ever!.......2005-10-25
Party Girl was one of the best books that I have read. I read this book when I was a junior in high school. This book is a very exiting book it has a lot of action. The book is about two gangster girls who have really messed up lives. Kata and Ana are best friends and they are both in the same gang. Ana lives with her mom and her sisters. Her family is a very attached family who always has financial problems. Ana's Mom is really exited because Ana is going to turn fifteen and her mom wants to make her a little party. What Ana's family doesn't know is that she is in a gang. Ana Feels very lonely and wants to die because she doesn't feel loved no matter that her family is so attached with each other. She even bought a dress that she wants to get berried in, but her mom thinks that it's a dress for prom. Ana gets pregnant from a guy from the opposite gang. Kata lives with her mom. Her mom is a lady who has a drinking problem. Every day when Kata gets home from school her mom has a different guy. Sometimes the guys would even try and take advantage of her so she would go with go with her gangster friends and kick it.
To escape away from all there problems Ana and Kata would dance. They would both go to parties where they both battled with other girls. One day after a party when they were walking back home Ana got shot at from a drive by shooting. Kata promised to get revenge over Ana'a death. Ana's mom never found out about Ana's other side nor that she was pregnant. People should really think about reading this book because it is a very very good book.

Thoughtful.......2007-09-13
This is the only book I've read that gives advice on how to prepare for your parties. Lighting, Music, Conversation, party favors, prepping the bathroom & where to get items for your party. (some of the links seem to be broken.) How to write invitations. Preparing a pantry of emergency items. A few Food items that can be frozen & revived quickly. She then goes on to give you situations like Cocktail parties, Elegant Dinner parties, buffets & gives menu suggestions based on how much time you have to prepare: Emergency, 2 hours, over the top & cheap.
I've looked as several other famous peoples party books & they don't cover quite a few of the details Erika covers. It's not a lengthy book. But just pointing out things to take care of like: put a candle in the bathroom & bathroom spray that's not out of a can reminds me, "Oh yeh, I gotta put that on my list!" Instead of realizing I forgot something after the party's started.
It is written like a 20 something. But that's part of the fun of it. Read it with humor. She tells some entertaining stories on herself.
Party on!.......2007-01-19
I ordered this for my daughter, who's in charge of sorority sisterhood events. She loves this book and it's helped her greatly in organizing things, knowing what to buy, cook, prepare and it's been of great use to her. It's a great book for any sort of gathering, whether it be college, work or just plain get togethers.
fabulosity at it's most fabulous.......2006-12-23
this little missive is a wonderful way to spice up your next party! filled with lots of good advice and ideas - everything you need to make your next bash a sweet sweet success!
Very Entertaining & Good recipes.......2005-10-31
I bought this book because my husband invited some work people over for dinner. I didn't realize that this is so entertaining (funny), and the recipes are just so delicious. Needless to say, my husband was very impressed with what I put together that night so we have now invited about 20 people over for Thanksgiving. I use the book all the time, and our children loves the appetizers. I also gave it to my single friend who is now engaged. Highly recommended for people who loves entertaining.
Great Ideas.......2005-10-12
I enjoyed the way the author added humor to the book. Overall, great book, but the recipes are not really something that can be prepared "Last Minute". Would have like to have seen more recipes that did not require so much prep. But, great tips on invites and decorations.

a good read.......2006-07-04
I think this is one of the best beacon street girls books yet. but the thing i like the best is that it tackles the difficult issue of alcohol. the book portrays drinking as a bad, disgusting idea and has several pages in the back that show what really happens to teenagers who drink. plus, the story line is interesting and i couldn't stop reading!

I love the ideas!.......2006-06-23
This book shows wonderful games amd treats for American Girl Parties that you can have at home. It even gives information about why and what kind of parties Felicity, Josefina, Kirsten, Addy, Samantha and Molly had. My sisters said that they both want to have parties about their American Girl.
The American Girls Party Book.......2000-08-01
The American Girls Party book offers 18 different theme party plans that accompany the dolls and books made by the same company. "Since the earliest days of America, American girls have found lots of ways to celebrate--picnics, dances, barn raisings, fairs, teas, and victory shows." The authors teach children how to plan ahead for their special theme party.
This book offers wholesome ideas for celebrations; from home-made party invitations (with patterns) to recipes for special easy to prepare dishes, to timeless party games, musical suggestions, and decorating ideas. The book is replete with elegantly laid out color photos of real American girls and the party fixings, celebrating all the joy life offers. I'm sure your little girls will enjoy this book as much as mine do. It teaches children that they have the ability to create something wonderful and share their creation with others. A feel good book!

They even have a shopping list for each theme-party at the back of the book! If you are having trouble with a birthday-party-planning, then this book is FOR YOU!!!
Fun!.......2005-05-24
I love this book. They have eight themes that have detailed sleepover plans and ideas for more parties. I liked this book because they had ideas for invitations, games, crafts, and food. At the back of the book there was a tear-out doorknob hanger and there were shopping lists for each theme. The lists are just the right size to put in your purse. So if you love sleepovers, get this book!

Customer Reviews:
Buy This Book Before Making A Business Decision, Ladies!.......2006-10-15
****
This is a great introductory book about what an adult sex toy business for women involves. It is strictly for a woman who is interested in distributing sex toys via the party plan method in an extremely tasteful way (as opposed to a sleezy or crude way). It would not be helpful for men who wish to start this type of business, as the book is written strictly for women. It also would not be helpful to a woman who is interested in selling hard-core adult sex products in the ways men have traditionally sold such products to each other (via pornographic sites, adult book stores, etc.) This is for the "new way" of marketing sexual aids to women, via romance, self-empowerment, and selling "sexual fulfillment"---techniques that are unique to this business of woman-to-woman sales.
The book covers MLMs and already established party plans. It also covers starting your own business from scratch. It compares the different costs and benefits of each method of business.
The greatest value of this book is that it covers what it's really, really like to be in the adult sex toy business, things I'd never thought of, like customer returns, liability and local laws, product delivery and privacy, control of guests at parties (yes, they can get rowdy!), the hard work and commitment necessary to be successful, and more. It really opened my eyes, changing my idea of the adult sex toy business as something that seemed like a fun and funky idea to the harsh realities of operating such a business. It is not a discouraging book, just a realistic book. It helps you to evaluate if you are the type of person that would truly enjoy the day-to-day operations of "having a romance business" (a popular euphemism for this business) before you run out and spend several hundred to over a thousand dollars to buy a kit from a company.
It is written by the two women who started Lady Bliss, a popular adult sex toy party plan, and details the often humorous experiences they ran into. As you might imagine, it comes off as being a little biased towards joining a party plan versus starting your own party plan, but just a little; this is a little natural, since this is the author's business. The authors cover several other party plans as well as sharing their own experiences starting their own, so you definitely get enough information to make a good decision and get started in your own research, saving you lots of time and even more money.
This book is a fun read (as you can tell by the cover) even if you don't plan on ever starting a business, but are just curious. If you are thinking of starting a "romance business", you'd be wise to buy this book; I'm certain you won't be sorry.

A Must read for beginners .......2005-08-30
