Book Description
In this sequel to the beloved Rules of the Road, Jenna Boller is dripping with newfound maturity after her life-altering summer on the road. She has a job she loves at Gladstone Shoes, a best friend who makes her laugh, and a dysfunctional family she's learning how to handle. Jenna feels ready for anythinguntil Tanner Cobb, a guy with a past, a police record, and dangerously good looks, walks into her life. Suddenly Jenna's surrounded by crises, including a shoe empire on the verge of crumbling. Tanner's street smarts seem to be what Jenna needs, but can she trust him enough when the going gets tough?

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-07-17
She did it again! Joan Bauer hooked me on yet another novel about selling shoes!
I had previously read Rules of the Road, where we were introduced to Jenna Boller. In BEST FOOT FORWARD we again root for Jenna of Gladstone Shoes. I even *ahem* took this book to church to read between Sunday School and the church service. It was that good.
Mrs. Gladstone puts Jenna in charge of Tanner, a boy Jenna's age, after he tries to steal some shoes from them. Jenna's not sure letting him work for the company is the best idea Mrs. Gladstone has had; even so, Jenna's confidence grows as she encourages Tanner to be his best.
Changes are coming fast since the merger of Gladstone Shoes and Shoe Warehouse Corporation. Advertising strategies become distasteful. The quality of the product is suffering. Jenna and Mrs. Gladstone's questions aren't being answered.
When the higher-ups in the company begin making unethical business decisions, Mrs. Gladstone entrusts Jenna with the investigation. When Jenna finds out that Mrs. Gladstone's son is involved, she has to confide in somebody. Jenna chooses Tanner and is astounded at the things he's noticed. She prepares Mrs. Gladstone for the bad news and shares an understanding of being disappointed by someone you love.
BEST FOOT FORWARD is remarkable in its premise of teens doing the right thing only because it's the right thing to do. This is a common theme throughout Ms. Bauer's books, and, once again, she has made me grateful that I'm lucky enough to spend time with teens and that I have the privilege of making an impression upon them - as they do on me.
This is another Joan Bauer must read!

Feels Unfinished.......2007-01-09
I'm not sure if Joan Bauer is planning another book about Jenna, but it seemed to me from the end of this one that she needs to write one in order to clean things up. Although I loved "Rules of the Road," I didn't find this book nearly as compelling. Jenna was still her strong and determined self, but the supporting characters were a bit bland.
Mrs. Gladstone didn't have as much of a presence in this book as she did in the first one. Jenna's love interest was only barely described, as was Tanner, the good-hearted theif who I kept feeling Bauer really wanted to make into Jenna's love interest.
This book felt like only half a story, which would make sense if there is a sequel intended, but it is a bit weak as a stand-alone book.
Best Foot Forward.......2007-01-08
This book was sort of like a kid's look into the world... where there are thieves and people who try to do illegal things to gain a profit. Some people learn, some people don't, and some people witness these things and know that's not who they want to be.
That's what Jenna Boller does. She watches everything around her, and she learns from it. And when the time comes when she has to deal with it she knows she's not alone. This is such a good book.
Best Book Forward.......2006-03-09
Have you ever been a great influence to your little brother or sister and then did something horrible right in front of them? Probably not, but in Best Foot Forward , by Joan Bauer, Tanner taught his little brother Webster how to read, write, and count. But then Tanner stole a pair of shoes from a shoe store right in front of Webster. He starts to work at the store he stole from to make up for what he has done. Maybe he just became his father for a little while, like the Incredible Hulk or Dr. Jekle and Mr. Hide, or maybe he is a real thief? (another thing to think about.) Jenna ,a girl who also works at the shoe store, helps him realize what's going on. Will he steal again, or will he become the best brother ever again. Do you think he will put his best foot forward? Read the book to find out.
good, but...........2005-12-14
j is back in a good way and in a bad way. again, the dialog is snappy, the main character is fun and witty and likeable. however, the issues are huge and therin lies the problem. bauer tries to tackle an alcohalic parent, a (maybe) annorexic sibling, a grandmother with alzheimer's disease, a thieving co-worker, the issue of unethical overseas labor tactics and the maturing of her main character all at the same time. the book treads on all of these issues but fails to tackle them realistically. the theiving co-worker for instance does not feel like a real teenager. in fact, he comes accross almost as an idiot...i could have pulled off a better scam than that guy:) anyway, it IS still a fun read, just don't look for any realness in it.

First impressions are always difficult to shake. So why not help influence how others view you in the first place, thereby affecting the way they think of you in the long run? Put Your Best Foot Forward, by Jo-Ellan Dimitrius (who specializes in the meaning of appearance and behavior) and Mark Mazzarella (a trial lawyer), fully lays out a step-by-step program they call Impression Management, designed to do just that. Based on extensive individual interviews, literature reviews, and survey analyses, it begins by examining exactly how and why people make these initial assessments. It then explores the specific "qualities others find most important, and how each of the ways you paint a picture of your personality and values--appearance, body language, voice, communication style, the content of your speech, your actions, and environment--can be honed to project the best possible impression of who you are and how you are likely to think and act." Wisely, the authors never suggest compromising your integrity or surrendering your individuality. They instead recommend crucial but simple behavior such as choosing dark clothing to command authority, increasing "soft but sustained" eye contact, and avoiding "highbrow vocabulary and snobbish words." --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Time-tested advice on projecting a positive image in any situation -- from the Internet to an interview -- drawn from scientific and popular literature about the clues people use to judge others
In Put Your Best Foot Forward, two experts in "people reading" identify the four qualities -- trustworthiness, caring, humility, and capability -- that form the foundation of every great impression. They explain how to convey these vital qualities through personal appearance, body language, voice, and actions, and reveal how particular environments affect the impression one makes. With hands-on tips and advice, they teach readers how to accentuate their positive traits and eliminate negative ones.
The "Impression Management" techniques you will learn in this book have been garnered from over 10,000 interviews and employed successfully by people from every walk of life, ranging from leaders of Fortune 500 companies to lawyers and other professionals and to business people at every rung of the corporate ladder and individuals who want to enhance their personal relationships.
For anyone who wants (or needs) to enhance the way he or she is perceived by others -- from executives to students, nervous suitors to chat room visitors -- Put Your Best Foot Forward is the place to start.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference, plenty of filler.......2005-12-13
I agree with other reviews that there's not much in the book that doesn't seem like common sense. Take a walk through the mall, though, and look at people's appearances and you'll see that maybe common sense isn't so common. Shake a hand and try to hold a conversation and you'll be more convinced. It's been said that people judge you within five seconds of meeting and this book clearly outlines what is being judged. There's a good bit of filler here - how really important is hair color? - but there is good stuff here to remind yourself of. I think. I think Dimitrius is mostly talking to the choir: those interested in the book are likely already practicing most of what she teaches. Those who aren't interested will probably stay that way.
As an aside I found the book to be very 'American.' I like to read books about other cultures, mostly French and German, and I don't think a book on etiquette or nice dress would be needed in either country. Since Americans generally dress like 'sacks of potatoes' (so say the French) I thought it interesting that we need a book telling us how to be presentable.
Becoming a Positive Stereotype.......2004-01-14
Despite the negative connotations of my title, the great insight I found in this book is that people will try to conform you into stereotypes they have. They usually rely on pretty shallow criteria to judge you. If you happen to fit into a negative stereotype, then you will be waging an uphill fight to change other's opinions of you. People look for confirmation not disconfirmation. So if you say, do or wear something that isn't exactly the right thing, then it will probably confirm the negative stereotype others have of you. Conversly, if you have a positive stereotype, then those deviations from the stereotype are often dismissed or excused. I've learned this through hard trial and error. I once held that the best thing is to be yourself and, if others don't except you for who you are then the hell with them. This is fine for one's personal life but disasterous for a competitive work environment. Even though you may be hard-working and conscientious about work product, in a competitive environment people will use perceived negative differences against you. It sucks but people in competitve work environments are often jerks. If you want to succeed in a competitive environment, then you will just have to accept that people are often shallow and jerks. Consequently, cultivating the proper image will definitely be an advantage to you and this book is a good start.
Poorly thrown together book........2003-12-28
I bought this because I've seen the author on Larry King and elsewhere talking about how she reads potential jurors by their body language. She's made a lot of money doing this, and recommending jurors to lawyers. It was all very interesting until I bought this slapped together book. Really all it says is that sloppy posture and messy clothing will not make a good impression in the business world or the dating world. Really, that's all it says!!
Practically useless.......2003-07-07
While I can not think of another book of this type to recommend over this one, there is not really any information in this book that is not simple common sense. Among the 'gems' revealed are the importance of good posture, good grooming and how important it is to refrain from using profanities in public. This book is highly recommended, then, for those who think slouching, bad odour and cursing all make for a good impression on others.

Straight to the gist of the matter.......2007-07-13
Clear, insightful and above all concise. It's definitely a must-to-read for anyone involved in negotiations at international level. Personally, having several years of international sale experience in Asia, I've found it realistic and totally accurate. At the same time this book has given even me a deeper knowledge of that acquired on field.

Suki Schorer studied with the towering George Balanchine, became a principal dancer in his company, the New York City Ballet, and then joined him as a teacher at the school he founded—the School of American Ballet. And she will be the first to confirm that just about everything a young girl needs to know about life can be learned in ballet class. How to be always balanced. How to find the strength to follow your heart. How to turn a mistake into part of the dance. How to put your best foot forward. And how to find the self-esteem, focus, and discipline needed in life.
An inspirational gift book for any girl who ever took dance classes and dreamed of being a ballerina,
The Ballet School of Life is a unique collection of wisdom and illustration, of life lessons set against a backdrop of dramatic full-color photographs of young dancers and whimsical, theatrical watercolors of butterfly wings and fairy-tale castles, tiaras, and stage settings. Written by Suki Schorer with the assistance of the School of American Ballet, the lessons are simple and motivating and reveal that dancers in training learn much more than how to plié or stand on pointe:
Your body is your instrument. Even Sugar Plum Fairies sew their own ribbons. It takes strong wings to fly high. Do something extraordinary just because you can. Never miss a beat. And, to remember always, When storms rage and waters rise, glide like the swan.

perfect gift for a young dancer.......2007-05-14
I bought this book for my daughter who teaches dance in Brisbane Australia. I thought it was a great idea for an encouragement award at the end of the year for one of her young students. No only is it a book on dance but a book on life and the secrets of a happy life. Beautifully presented and illustrated. My daughter loved it and has put it away for the end of the year. Thanks.
Ballet is Life.......2005-12-08
A lovely gift for the young ballerina (8 to 12), this book captures the many ways ballet training can be applied to life's challenges. The young dancers who illustrate the text are beautiful examples of School of American Ballet style. And who better to reflect on the teachings of Balanchine than master ballet teacher Suki Schorer. Her optimistic, life-affirming insights into how to bring the basics of the barre to the center stage of life will be inspiring for young girls who love ballet. I only wish the credits had included the names of the ballet students who posed for these charming photos.

My 2 and 3 year old recieved this as a gift and it has now become a staple in our gift giving for new babies, teachers and high school and college graduation. I found the book inspiring on more than one level. My children love it for all the illustrations and I love it for the deeper meaning. I am writing this review as I am about to purchase my 14th copy to give as a graduation gift.
Put Your Best Foot Forward.......2001-04-26
This is a beatifully written book with wonderful illistations. I was looking for a book to give to 44 fifth grade students just finishing elementary school about to enter middle school. This book tells of simple pleasures in life that have deep life meaning lessons.I particularly liked the page that says "Apples taught me that there is a star within each of us".It is a book for all ages. This book gives exactly the message we were looking for, to believe in yourself, be kind to one another, to look on the bright side and embrace change. I loved this book. Now I just hope the Parent Teacher Organization has the funds to buy 44 copies!

Good information.......2000-04-18
My wife and I read this book and wish we had found it before our two trips to Russia. The book is a quick (75 pages) and easy read; full of useful information without any fluff.
The only odd thing was advertizing, but it is easy to ignore.
The book puts an awkward foot forward.......2000-04-16
Although this book discusses many important aspects of Russian culture, I felt that it focused a bit too much on bussines. Many of us, like myself, would be visiting Russia not for bussines, rather as tourists. However, some of her remarks did offer some excelent advice about greeting people, eating, and Russian manners. Most topics though seemed a bit too glazed over. I wished that the author would have further discussed many points in her book. Overall, it's a good book to start with. Read it and you will find a taste of what Russian manners are like. Although I would strongly recomend doing further research. Try to find a book that is more current. This book was first published in 1995, many aspects of Russian culture have changed since then.

A Wondrous Journey!!!.......2004-07-25
This would have to be one of my all time favourite books. The author Susie Kelly decided to walk from the picturesque South Of France to Lake Geneva in Switzerland because she got tired of the same old views every time she went for a walk around the block!!!It is a testament to her skills as a writer that she could make such a journey so interesting and entertaining to read. Having ditched her portable cooker and fry pan Susie was at the mercy (and merci!!) of the restaurants and French chefs that she encountered along the way.Their vegetarian cooking skills were limited so the author ate a lot of omelettes and is said to remark' An omelette is at best , an omelette'.The book is full of gems like this and I found myself cheering Susie on during her wondrous journey.

A friend raved about this, and she was right!!.......2002-06-22
A friend of mine who raises and shows dogs raved about this book, so I picked it up. It has been very helpful, even though my puppy will not be a show dog, it has helped with my understanding her better.
Outstanding value.......2000-09-12
If you are serious about competition obedience this book should be a required read. It was a great help for me when I started to show my first dog. It points out all the little things that can make the difference between a qualifying and a non-qualifying score. If this book was 5 times more expensive it would still be worth every dime.
A most informative and up-to-date book........1998-02-28
The author does not miss a trick with this book. If you are at all interested in AKC Obedience, whether you already compete or are even considering it, this is THE book to read. Rather than give lengthy training methods for the basics of obedience (any book can do that), Handler specifically covers what and what not to expect from an AKC obedience trial or sanctioned match, and gives wonderful advice on "proofing" your dog for each required excersise. This book is nothing short of a necessity for the AKC obedience competitor.
Good basic book for those new to obedience work.......1997-07-03
I like this book because I am just starting to
get interested in showing my dogs in obedience.
The author covers almost every imaginable topic
including what to wear and what to expect at a
show. I also like that she assumes that the reader is working with a trainer as it encourages the reader to find a good one. The illustrations are very helpful as well.
