Book Description

The summer of 1995 marks Kate Colter's fifteenth year in the small town of Hayden, Wyoming. She is a woman who is generally happy in her marriage and with her now predictable day-to-day life as wife, mother, and part-time breadwinner. Even though she is a New Englander at heart, Kate has reached a point where rodeos, summer heat, sharp light, and the vast, desolate beauty of the West have become almost second nature to her. She loves her husband and daughter, is fond of her neighbors, and enjoys the company of her mother-in-law. Yet, privately, she longs for the conversations and stories of her past, and she can't help but feel disconnected from the people around her.

In walks Tom Baxter, Kate's mother-in-law's new suitor from "back East."

Kate is immediately drawn to Tom—his gentle charm and engaging conversation spark an unusual companionship. Tom seems like the little piece of home that Kate so misses. She's curious about him and about his story, but finds unexplained gaps and inconsistencies that pique her interest to a new level. Then a series of peculiar and seemingly suspicious events leads Kate to a terrifying conclusion—a conclusion that could forever shatter her life and the lives of those she loves.

In this debut novel, Dorie McCullough Lawson vividly captures a familiar American landscape. Filled with unforgettable characters and written in eloquent yet suspenseful prose, Along Comes a Stranger is a darkly humorous novel that examines the depth of identity and family life.

Dorie McCullough Lawson, the daughter of historian David McCullough, has already authored, fittingly enough, a well-received non-fiction volume entitled, POSTERITY: LETTERS OF GREAT AMERICANS TO THEIR CHILDREN. Now her first work of fiction, ALONG COMES A STRANGER, makes a different kind of mark.

STRANGER doesn't take place in Revolutionary War or Civil War or even Cold War America. It's 1995 and the town is Hayden, Wyoming. Protagonist and narrator Kate Colter bookends and occasionally laces her story with present day commentary, but in the main she tells it as if she were living it again day by day. She's the wife of George, a paleontologist who teaches and goes on digs, and the mother of a young, touchingly fragile girl who helps Kate care for the sick or wounded animals they board in their barn. In easy, conversational blobs, Kate tells about the geography near Hayden, of her own childhood back East, how women follow men to hardy states like Wyoming but men don't hardly follow women there, and about the uncurious natures of the folks in Hayden. The uncurious lot includes her mother-in-law, Lorraine, who is the salt of the earth, good at crafts and organizing parties, but hasn't a spit of intellectual curiosity. Kate admits to her own tendency to be scatterbrained and less than tidy, and she knows she causes her mother back in Massachusetts consternation because she isn't a go-getter professionally. Kate is obviously sensitive to her part-time employment status, but not enough to change it. Her aunt and best friend is an unmarried, driven, career woman in Boston. The two relax together on the phone dissecting current and past high profile crimes (like the O.J. trial). Kate laments the American love affair with TV, but tickles her own entertainment bone with speculations about where FBI Most Wanted List toppers might be this very minute. Frankly at loose ends with her life, Kate takes a friendly shine to Lorraine's new boyfriend, just come to town. She is instinctively intrigued (not romantically, she hastens to assure) by the tall, courteous, reserved, sixtyish man called Tom because he shows interest in her husband's fossil-hunting (not, as we've seen, something the locals do) and he is at the Custer Battleground on the day she takes her daughter, Clara. As Tom, Kate, and Clara pace the famous field together, Tom gives a tour-guide sketch of who was where and who killed whom when. But, the more time Kate spends with Tom, the more she wonders whether he, as he says, is really from Ohio. She begins to suspect he isn't who he says he is. Her crime intuitions then color how she acts with Tom too, and, in turn, his guard goes up. Finally, the tension snaps into violence that is oddly a natural conclusion but also unexpectedly dissonant, unnecessary, and sad. It's as though Flannery O'Connor turned her astringent, perverse pen on Wyoming.

A quick look at the cover might lead a reader to peg ALONG COMES A STRANGER as a typical summer read about some mysterious interloper who floats into an isolated town, seduces with a vengeance, turns out to be a heel, and you know the rest. But STRANGER isn't a flat-footed, brainless read. It meanders -- though never boringly -- at times, and its mystery quotient might have been higher, but this novel has sinew and muscle. The characters act in complex and unpredictable ways, sometimes popping out unguessed strengths, sometimes inclining toward brotherly love one moment and then twisting wretchedly into shamefulness the next. Kate is an opinionated narrator, but she doesn't deny her weaknesses. In the end she says, "Human nature is curious and should overcome complacency and apathy and avoid the seduction of lazy entertainment. But you can live with someone day in and day out and miss what's important....[I]n this life, you just never know." When Kate makes this statement, she has learned, from experience, to question her assumptions about human nature and behavior. The reader of ALONG COMES A STRANGER may well do the same. Definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an Authentic Modern Western Novel!.......2007-06-03

There are a couple of things this book is not. It is not a cookie-cutter suspense/mystery written according to a "paint-by-numbers" formula (if mixed metaphors are permissible). It is also not written by someone who grew up "back East" now in search (in vain) of her inner "cowboy voice" (two or three summers on a dude ranch does not a Louis L'Amour make).

Instead, Ms. Lawson offers a richly detailed glimpse of modern western, small-town life from an authentic perspective. Her main character/narrator captures things as they are, relaying her observations with a dry, often humorous editorial, all against the backdrop of a mystery that unfolds in the absence of a crime. The conventional "action" of the story comes only at the end, after a long, suspenseful build-up that is a joy to read.

If you are looking for a typical western/mystery, with the principal action/crime on page 13, followed by pages of scintillating dialog involving the words "yep", "nope", "ma'am" and descriptions of chewing tobacco, all concluding with plot twist (gasp) / large-caliber firearm / dead villain, you should continue to the checkout aisle. If you are looking for something authentic, that is both witty and new, this is your book.

1 out of 5 stars I'm sorry to have to say..........2007-05-31

this book was boring and disappointing. As always, I felt stuck reading it to the very end, literally I was stuck in the car on a rode trip. I hated every other chapter, they were mundane. Yes, I can see some purpose in them all, to build up to an ending but, the actual plot was scarce. The author, Ms. Lawson, disappointed me when she insisted on including a description of each womans' weight when introducing characters. She had a horrible way of making woman who were larger, dumb or unfriendly and I was furious by this! It was shockingly insensitive on her part.

1 out of 5 stars a big disappointment.......2005-12-01

I really enjoyed Homecoming, Dicey's song, and A Solitary Blue, so I was expecting to enjoy the story of one of my favorite characters. Boy was i disappointed. It started out with hope, but after she was kicked out of the dance camp i found her prejudiced, quick to judge, and paranoyed.
Just because one person of a type is awful does not mean that everyone is. That is the definition of prejudice, judging everyone of a group from one person. I have had bad experiences with people from all sorts of nationalities. Just because one of them might have been Irish, or hispanic, or african american doesn't mean that everyone else in that group is like that. That's like judging someone by whether they have pierced ears, or like that.
I found Mina in this book the opposite from the Dicey point of view books. Instead of being warm, confident, funny, and intelligent, I found her being foolish in her judging of people by their race, and paranoyed that everyone was prejudiced against her, when actually she was the only one thinking of race.
I think that Mina was embodying the exact thing she was so in hatred of. Prejudice against people because of their race, except she was prejudiced against caucasians. It was a very irritating premise, and I worry that it might have ruined the others in the Tillerman cycle. Please think twice before reading this book, if you too had the same idea of Mina as I used to. Come A Stranger is sure to ruin it.

4 out of 5 stars Come a Stranger___Report by Larissa.......2005-11-29

The book I read is called Come a Stranger. It is about an African American girl named Mina. Mina loves to do ballet and she even gets a scholarship to go to a really good dance academy over the summer. Mina has a blast and can't wait to go back next summer. In fact she can't stop thinking about it and her friends are getting mad, because they think she's bragging quite a bit. Next summer she goes there and seems to have trouble doing easy things. Later the instructor takes her aside and tells her she is growing up uncoordinated and must leave now. A man named Tamer Shipp, the summer minister, comes to pick her up and they soon become good friends. Tamer tells Mina of a man called Bullet Tillerman and how prejudice Bullet was. Next year at school a girl named Dicey Tillerman is there and Mina tries and later succeeds to be her friend. Mina also takes up tennis and they must advance her because she's so good. That is my summery of Come a Stranger.

I think the theme of this book is not to be prejudice. Mina is always thinking about how people must hate her, because she's black. She often feels she's limited and that is very sad. Prejudice is a strong theme in this book and is a wonderful one too.

This is a great book, because the author uses a lot of figurative language, like she looked as graceful as a swan as she danced. This book has very interesting details that really help you picture her dance teacher's garage converted into a studio. The way Cynthia uses the details really brings life to the book. One thing Cynthia Voigt could have done was included a little more exposition at the beginning of the book. Maybe she could have told about Mina's family, life, school, friends, and house more.

The genre of this book is Realistic Contemporary Fiction. I know this, because this could happen, but it didn't. I would rate this book a 9 out of 10, because it was good, but needed a better expository. Also it took me a while to truly get "hooked."

5 out of 5 stars strong heroine, good book.......2005-10-10

Mina Smiths is a young African American girl who hopes to become a dancer. Although talented, when she begins puberty, she finds the once-easy moves difficult, and she is sent home from an all-white summer ballet camp for this reason. Through her friendship with a black neighbor and his family, she begins to grapple with issues of racism as well as coming of age. In school, she befriends a white girl, whose family has ties to her neighbor's past. Mina is a strong, assertive heroine whose triumphs and struggles are interesting and endearing.

4 out of 5 stars J from humber.......2004-10-26

the book was really intersting and i really liked how Mina (themain character) deals with social issues and problems through out her life. I think that meeting Diecy was a good start for her and i think that by the end of the book she feels more self-confident and really proud of what she has achieved, but one thing i didnt like from the book was the part near the ending whn she meets the boy. I think it was cheezy but the last pargraph was really meaningful and well written

When pirates overrun his paddleboat and his new bride Lierin is tossed into the dangerous river, Ashton Wingate is sure he has lost her forever. Three years later, Ashton's carriage collides with a rider, and he is certain that the unconscious beauty is his lost wife. But when the woman revives, she remembers nothing but faint memories of a dark and murderous night, and feels only trepidation in the arms of her so-called husband.

Willing to remain with him until she recovers, Lierin soon finds generous comfort in Ashton's care. Though her memories remain elusive, she and Ashton forge a relationship of deep passion and love. Then Malcolm Sinclair arrives and claims that Lierin is actually his wife Lenore, Lierin's twin sister. Lierin must admit that she has memories of Malcolm, though Ashton vows to never lose her again. Tensions flare between the men, and the growing danger seems frighteningly familiar to her. Will Lierin and Ashton be able to uncover the secrets of the past in time to secure a future together?

First published in 1983, Come Love a Stranger has remained a favorite among Woodiwiss fans for good reasons. Set in the South in the 1830s and dappled with well-formed characters, this book is fresh and entertaining on every page. Touches such as a burning madhouse, a melodramatic ex-girlfriend, and a deliciously malevolent villain make for a great read. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars but there's more to the story...........2006-11-18

I really enjoyed aspects of this book, as I do all of Kathleen Woodiwiss (at least ones I have read thus far and that is about 6 of them) but I felt there were some missed opportunities here to make a good book a great book. Believe me, I am a big KW fan, but this book seemed rushed and slow at the same time if that is possible! The resolution at the end was a little too neat and sort of confused me. And, what annoys me about KW at times is that lots and LOTS of peripheral characters are introduced and flutter in and out of the story like hummingbirds. Why bother? Bitchy Marelda could have been a GREAT villainess but she is painfully underused and frankly was the only interesting character in the beginning which moves too slow. Then she leaves and comes back intermittently and that is too bad. I wish KW would write a book about Marelda! What fun that would be! The hero and heroine here are, as always, incredibly beautiful and we have to hear about that constantly, but I felt like their chemistry was like walking into a movie that had already started at times. KW can create an atmosphere full of suspense and adventure that I love and once you get into this book, you won't be able to put it down Not disappointing by any means but this could have been much sharper than as it stands.

1 out of 5 stars I didn't like this book.......2006-01-23

This is the second Kathleen Woodiwess I've read that I didn't like because I couldn't get into the story. The whole amnesia confused identity thing dragged on far too long as far as I was concerned by the end I didn't care if she was Lierin or Lenore.I just wanted her to remember so they could move on with their lives. The story was way too long.I liked all her other books except Ashes in the wind. This one was not well written.

4 out of 5 stars The ending needs rewriting.......2005-06-15

Ashton Wingate is a wealthy plantation owner in Mississippi. With his good looks and fortune, he had his choice of women but none was able to capture his heart like Lierin. He knew that he had met the woman of his dreams and so married her after a very brief courtship. On their honeymoon aboard one of Ashton's boats, the River Witch, with the ink on their marriage papers barely dry, they were attacked by river pirates and his wife of merely a few days was thrown overboard never to be seen again, leaving Ashton a widower.

Fast forward to three years and we see Ashton in a carriage on his way home to Belle Chene. Deep in thoughts, he is startled by the sound of a woman's scream. Thrown off her horse, Ashton immediately jumps out to her rescue and takes the unconscious woman to the safety of his home. But when moonlight frames her face, he is shocked for right in his very arms is the face of the woman who has haunted his dreams for the last three years - his beloved wife Lierin. Unfortunately, the woman wakes up with no memory whatsoever of her past or identity. But in his heart, Ashton knows that she is Lierin. And when fate once again threatens to tear them apart when Malcolm Sinclair turns up and claim her as his abducted wife Lenore, Ashton vows to fight for her no matter what.

What follows is a series of confusion and heartbreak for Ashton and Lierin. Although Ashton's heart tells him that the woman is his dear wife, mounting evidence seem to prove that the woman is indeed Lenore, Lierin's twin sister. For her, as much as it pains her to leave the kind and gentle stranger who has managed to convince her that she is Lierin and whom she has fallen in love with, she knows that she must uncover the truth about herself and whom she's really married to. Sadly, things seem to favor Malcolm's side of the story, especially when the man who claims to be her own father refutes Ashton's claims.

COME LOVE A STRANGER is an exciting story filled with deceit and mystery. As usual, Kathleen Woodiwiss shows her flare for storytelling with her vivid descriptions of each scenes and portrayal of her characters. I absolutely loved Ashton! His tenderness towards Lierin, his patience and undying devotion is simply adorable. I enjoyed their playfulness toward each other and those scenes made me smile. And when Lierin was taken away from him again, I really felt his grief and couldn't wait for the truth to come out. But personally, if I were the heroine, I would have gone back to Ashton immediately after seeing him come out of the sea wearing nothing but that loincloth!

What's good about this is the mystery. It is well-plotted and I actually found myself confused and unable to figure out whether the woman is actually Lierin or Lenore, adding further to the suspense. My biggest gripe though is the ending. I closed the book rather dissatisfied, feeling as if the author has reached her word count and therefore decided to rush the ending. Overall, I thought that this book was good.

3 out of 5 stars There's something missing.......2004-11-09

I typically enjoy Woodiwiss novels but this one left me with a big question mark in my mind. The beginning of the book dragged on while the end came up so quickly that I felt like I must have missed something.

And there was some logic missing in the plot. She has no memory of who she is, yet she goes with two complete strangers, leaving behind the man she has come to love and "trust" over recent weeks. She claims she's trying to find out who she is, but willingly takes up residence with those two strangers, and assumes the name of her sister.

This story isn't one of Kathleen Woodiwiss' best.

4 out of 5 stars Very slow beginning but well worth it..........2004-06-30

At first I didn't think I would ever get into the book but after a long, slow wait I finally did & then I couldn't put the book down. To be honest it was about 150 pages before I was so into it that I hated to shut the book. The beginning was just very slow & kinda boring but I'm glad I didn't give up on it. I was truly confused as to who the woman was & I usually solve things pretty quickly but not the case with this book. The author gave just the right amount of clues to keep you guessing until the very end. I felt so giddy for her & Ashton when they found times to be together. It seemed to me that they were young lovers who were trying to be held apart by just about everybody but they weren't going to let anything or anybody stand in their way. It was so much fun for me to see their playful love for one another & to watch her find her identity. You just gotta love this book.
